6-mile path from York High School with a shorter one-mile route option available. The walk starts at 11 a.m. with checkin beginning at 10 a.m. Each walker agrees to raise a minimum of $25, but most walkers easily average over $200. Organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter, more than 200,000 walkers participate nationwide in Walk MS each year at more than 600 sites, raising over $30 million. Family and corporate Walk teams and volunteers can register online, www.walkMSgne. org, or by calling 1-800-3444867, and in person the day of the Walk. “Without Walk MS, we wouldn’t have the funds for newly diagnosed education and support,” said Heidi Eastman, Programs Manager. “Without Walk MS, we’d be set back 50 years to a time when there were no approved treatments for MS, and there was very little understanding about how MS works.” Last year, nearly 10,000 walkers participated in Walk MS throughout Maine, Mass., N.H., and Vermont, and raised well over $2.6 million. Eightyfive percent of monies raised by
the Chapter provide vital MS education, support, advocacy, and services in the local community, while funding cutting edge research into prevention, treatment, and cure. Of the many corporate sponsors that make Walk MS possible each year, our most loyal and generous are Spectrum Medical Group, CES, Subway, Dominos, Tim Horton’s, WHSN, and Ride Away. Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between brain and body and can stop people from moving forward in their lives. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, but teenagers and even young children can have the disease. More than twice as many women as men have MS, which affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.1 million worldwide. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society helps each

By 2016, the Tramuto Foundation will have awarded $1 million in grants to individuals and organizations. “Before 2016 when several important milestones will be realized in my life,” Tramuto explained, “I would like to reach my personal goal of empowering organizations that work to improve the lives of the disadvantaged, although I fully intend to continue that mission for many years to come.” As Chairman, CEO and one of the founders of Physicians Interactive, headquartered in Reading, MA and the leading global provider of online and mobile clinical resources for healthcare professionals, Tra-
muto has long believed he had a responsibility to give back to society. “I have been very fortunate in my life,” he explained, “and when one is given much, there must be a conscience decision to give back to those who are facing serious challenges in their life.” In 2011, Tramuto founded Health eVillages, a program of the not-for-profit Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights and Physicians Interactive, which provides stateof-the-art mobile health technology including medical reference and clinical decision support resources to medical professionals in the most challenging clinical environments around the world. Eames’ talk will focus on the development over time of defensive and offensive ways of war on the Maine frontier. “The early French wars were a time when the Maine frontier was vulnerable to attack from native-led and French-led raiding parties,” he said, referring to the fact that settlers were English, and England was then at war with France. “Towns like Berwick had to rely on support from the Massachusetts government and their own citizens to defend themselves. “After a struggling start, over time the problems of logistics and tactics improved until the people on the Maine frontier learned the proper way of war. ~ News ~ Rethinking, Reusing and Recycling in North Berwick NORTH BERWICK – Two grain silos were disassembled on a farm owned by Jane Thornton of Lebanon Road this week. The farm on which she and her family live was, in times past, a full working dairy farm equipped with a large cow barn and two towering grain silos. A plan to convert her property’s current energy needs to solar, sparked Thornton’s interest in finding a new home for the two concrete structures. She insisted that the silos were not to be merely thrown into a landfill during this process. Thornton contacted members of northern Maine’s Amish
community to solicit their help in reusing these structures. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, she drove to Portland’s Greyhound bus station to pick up the men who would be responsible for disassembling the two silos. Two teams of men from Stacyville and Unity, stepped off the large motor coach prepared to do whatever it took to get the job done. Led by Amish community member Uria Gingerich of Stacyville, they came equipped with all the tools needed for the job, including their own food. They stayed in the former dairy barn overnight, and began the process of dismantling the structures at first light.
Wednesday, Sept. 11 was one of the hottest days on record, but the intense heat was no match for the Amish men of the North. The value these men have for manual labor was ap-
parent during the days deconstruction. Armed with rope, they actively engaged bringing down the structures, speaking in Pennsylvania Dutch, and singing with enthusiasm, until the project was complete. If you would like informa-
tion on how you can donate or recycle your unwanted manual farm equipment, please contact Uria Gingerich, 1078 Station Road, Stacyville, ME 04777. This article was contributed by the J&C Correspondence Team. (courtesy photo)

Novelist Macomber Launches Book Tour in Kittery KITTERY – Award-winning novelist Robert N. Macomber will launch his East coast book tour, featuring his newest thriller “Honors Rendered,” on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road in Kittery. The event, sponsored by the Kittery Historical and Naval Society, starts at 7 p.m. with a lecture by Macomber, and booksigning. “Honors Rendered” is the eleventh in Macomber’s series of naval intelligence novels and is taken from the real history of the South Pacific where the clash of Germany and the United States predated World War I by 25 years. The fascinating story of the islands and people of Hawaii, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Soma are all part of the novel. Macomber’s 40-event book tour for “Honors Rendered” begins in Kittery and continues all the way to Key West, Florida. When not traveling the world on research, lecture, or book signing journeys, he lives at The Boat House, an old fisherman’s home on Pine Island off the coast of Florida where he grew up. Local Actor Brings Henry VIII to Life in Cape Neddick
Peter Wolf Live in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT – For the first time, New York Rock Legend, Peter Wolf, will be performing live with his band at Jonathan’s Ogunquit on Friday, Sept. 27. Peter Wolf has a history that dates back over fifty years in the music business. Most New Englander’s will remember his role in fronting the J. Geils Band but he came from a family that was quite involved in the arts and he started at a young age in the industry. His father was a dancer, song plugger, disc jockey, and singer of light opera; his mother, an organizer for the civil rights and labor movements, was a teacher for inner-city children in the Bronx. Wolf’s earliest passion was painting, and he was accepted on a scholarship to the Museum of Modern Art’s Special Studies for Children, and later to the High School of Music and Art, just blocks from the Apollo The-
ater, where the young Wolf would make weekly visits. Seeing performers like Jackie Wilson, Dinah Washington, Otis Redding, and James Brown sparked his early interest in blues and R&B. With a grant to study at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, he became a disc jockey on WBCN-FM, hosting a show called The All-Night House Party. The show touched on many musical bases, and reflected Wolf’s own broad musical interests. After 17 years with the J. Geils Band, the band members parted ways and Wolf went on to release his own solo album, Lights Out. In the late 80’s Wolf performed duets with artists, Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin. His latest album, Midnight Souvenirs, was released in 2010. It won the Album of the Year at the Boston Music Awards. “I have been after this concert for about three years now, “

said Jonathan West, owner of Jonathan’s Ogunquit. “Not only is it a show of personal interest to me, after having followed his career throughout the years... but I know our crowd and I know that being able to bring Peter Wolf into the area will bring out some true Wolf Fans!” Show time is at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online at www. jonathansrestaurant.com or by calling 207-646-4526. Jonathan’s Restaurant is located at 92 Bourne Lane in Ogunquit.
Ogunquit Playhouse Receives Grant from the Maine Arts Commission for West Side Story OGUNQUIT – The Ogunquit Playhouse is the proud recipient of a Great Works grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, in the amount of $5,000 to support its production of West Side Story and an associated student outreach program conducted in partnership with LearningWorks of Portland, Maine. The Ogunquit Playhouse has a superlative heritage of producing the most outstanding theatrical works since 1933 and an ongoing commitment to provide underserved communities the experience of live theatre. Through the Great Works grant program, the Maine Arts Commission offers major support for programs that will have a lasting cultural impact on Maine
audiences. The grant is designed to fund institutions with considerable resources that represent a commitment to excellence. The Great Works grant projects are expected to incorporate a contextual component, such as discussions, programs or classes in partnership with an educational or community institution. West Side Story is an award-winning musical adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The story takes place in New York City with two warring gangs – one white, the other Hispanic – representing the feuding families. Their hatred is juxtaposed against a love story between main characters Tony and Maria. Throughout the show tension escalates, until a tragic and heartbreaking event unites the warring gangs. The power-
Justice Is Mind Announces Maine Premiere OGUNQUIT – Mark Lund, executive producer, director and writer, is pleased to announce that Justice Is Mind will have its Maine premiere at The Leavitt Theatre in Ogunquit on September 28 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $9. The seaside resort town of Ogunquit marks the second stop of Justice Is Mind on its theatrical tour. “Holding the Maine premiere of Justice Is Mind in my favorite resort town of Ogunquit in a theatre that got its start during the silent film era, could not be more exciting,” said Lund. “I look forward to presenting audiences in the Ogunquit region a dramatic court-

Health & Fitness ...HEALTH from page 15
Keep your local care. If you want to keep your care with your local health care provider, we urge you to read this message. As part of the Affordable Care Act that President Obama signed in 2010, a method for all Americans to find affordable health insurance options goes into effect October 1, 2013 called the Health Insurance Marketplace. Here, individuals and small businesses will be able to compare and shop for health insurance plans. Those in southern York County, Maine need to know some facts before choosing a plan. In Maine, two health insurers have been approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance to sell policies in the marketplace: “Maine Community Health Options” and “Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield”. While both companies offer comparable pricing and coverage structure, only one of them offers coverage for services at York Hospital and with York Hospital physicians: Maine Community Health Options (MCHO). MCHO is a non-profit, Maine based consumer operated and oriented health insurance plan whose products feature a range of benefit plan designs and a comprehensive statewide network of healthcare providers, including York Hospital. If you choose this plan, coverage INCLUDES care at York Hospital and with our network of physicians. The Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield plans on the health insurance marketplace EXCLUDE coverage for services at York Hospital. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield decided to exclude 6 of the 38 hospitals in Maine - York Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital, Rumford Hospital, Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Mercy Hospital - in its new narrow network health insurance marketplace plans. If you choose their plans on the marketplace, you will be forced to go out of the area for your health care needs. Why is York Hospital excluded from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Narrow Network? This was not a decision York Hospital made. We were never approached to join the network by Anthem. We have asked Anthem for an explanation as to why we were excluded and have not received a credible answer.

This goal became the incentive for her family and HomeHealth Visiting Nurses to create an education fund in her name. Event facilities at the North Dam, Biddeford were generously donated for the gala. HomeHealth Visiting Nurses is a not-for-profit home
health care agency providing skilled nursing, rehabilitation, home health aide support, medical social work, parent and child health care, community health clinics, Telehealth and other services in Cumberland and York and southern Oxford Counties. HomeHealth Visiting Nurses is a member of MaineHealth. For more information, call 1-800-660-4867 or visit www.homehealth.org.

Entrepreneurs have numerous responsibilities when starting a new business, and outfitting the business with a top-notch group of employees is high on the priority list for new business owners. In order to attract the right applicants, business owners will have to establish employee pay grades early on, but they may not know how to begin the task of calculating an employee’s worth. Establishing a budget and price tag for employee services can be more difficult than pricing the services and products the business provides. Many decisions come into play when establishing salaries, perhaps none more important than how much
you can afford to pay employees without negatively affecting the bottom line. The following are a few tips to help new business owners establish salaries that will attract top candidates without breaking the bank. Research pay scales for similar positions. Online salary calculators can give new business owners a solid foundation on which to establish employee salaries. Networking with fellow professionals also may shed light on salary standards within a given industry. Clearly define each job when establishing salaries. Comparing responsibilities as well as job titles can help business owners determine fair salaries for their employees. Salaries for specific job titles can vary significantly, so having an established and specific job description enables you to conduct a more thorough salary comparison. Consider cost of living in the
city where the business is located. At the very least, salaries should reflect the cost of living in the city where your employees will live and work. Cost of living may run parallel to your operating expenses. If you are renting a space in an area with lofty real estate fees, then you likely know that cost of living nearby is no doubt just as expensive. Have a clear picture of your own budget, including operating expenses. Operating expenses need to be considered when determining employee salaries, as you want to keep the business running without going in the red. You may not be able to afford the number of employees you had in mind. It could be better to have a few well-paid employees who get the job done rather than several lower-paid but less reliable workers. See SALARIES page 19...

...SALARIES from page 19 Set a salary range with room for growth. You want to be in a position to reward hardworking employees, so you won’t want to stretch your initial budget by offering high salaries at the onset. Determine the lowest and highest salaries you’re willing to pay for each position, and stick to these parameters. This gives you the flexibility to reward good employees and the knowledge that you aren’t overpaying underperforming staff members. Offer additional perks. Money alone may not be enough to attract employees to your company. Employees may be attracted by location, flexible schedules or the opportunity to learn new skills. Make a list of negotiable perks that can be used as incentives to entice potential employees. Such perks can be especially valuable if or when salary becomes a sticking point. The choir, accompanied by a chamber ensemble from the Orchestre Philharmonique Ste Trinité (Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra), will perform at St. George’s on Sunday, September 29, at 7 p.m. The visit to St. George’s

Stacey is a Recording Artist and Worship Leader. As one of the top five finalists on season six of American Idol, Stacey’s powerful voice caught the attanetion of more than 30 million television viewers each week, and it’s that musical gift combined with his passionate heart for God that fuels everyone of his songs. is part of a month-long tour designed to focus awareness on the rich musical traditions of Haiti and the importance of the Music School in the life of the country. Holy Trinity is the only music school of its kind in Haiti, and its orchestras, choral groups and concert hall are gems of the country. The school, which offers music education to children of all economic classes through two locations in the Port-auPrince area, was destroyed in the devastating earthquake in 2010. The Music School continues its efforts to rebuild after that terrible natural disaster. The choir, founded in 1960, is a select group of singers ranging in age from 8 to 18. The boys audition as young as age seven, and continue through high school. The choir and music school have continually turned out musically gifted young adults and have contributed to the musical life of the country and the education of these fine young people. Les Petits Chanteurs first toured the United States in 1984. On the current tour, the choir will put on more than 30 concerts from Georgia to Maine and on the West Coast. This concert will be their third visit to York. Previous appearances in 2008 and 2010 were met with rave reviews. Through donations at the door, this musical event will

That same morning, “Broadway Comes to Saco,” with Lorraine Masure, brings new Broadway classics to the classroom, and Jane Funkhouser helps participants capture their memories in “Writing Your Memoirs.” In the afternoon, Cynthia Renner focuses on the Renaissance through the 21st century as seen through paintings, photographs and sculpture, in “Portrait Artists and Subjects II.” Rounding out the Saco choices is Friday’s “Conversational French,” a chance for conversation for those who need to brush up on their language or just want a chance to ‘parlez francais’ with Norman Beaupre and friends. For those in the Springvale/Alfred area, The Brothers of Christian Instruction hosts a “Guide to the Enjoyment of Wine,” where on Tuesdays Fred Rice leads a survey of the great wine producing regions of France. On Wednesday morning, Anne Lamb and Gloria Day offer returning favorite “Bring a Book

Those attending the Anderson Learning Center at the Springvale location on Fridays can choose from a variety of offerings. Morning choices include “Open Art Group” with David Moberg, where students can work with watercolors, oil, acrylics, or pencil-charcoal at all skill levels, “Broadway Comes to Springvale,” where Lorraine Masure transplants her “Broadway Comes to Saco” course to the Anderson Learning Center, and “Writing Your Memoirs,” Fleurette Bannon’s always amusing class for anyone who has a memory to share. Rounding out the selections is the DVD-based “The Way They Were,” a historical perspective on the 1890s to 1920s, courtesy of Fred Boyle.

NORTH BERWICK – Blue Bell Meet Blue Bell, a very blue DSH spayed female kitty about one and a half years old. Ms. Bell came into ACAR with two sweet tiny kittens, one has been placed; her little boy is waiting with his mom for the right family to give both or one of them a new loving family. Blue Bell is a little shy at first, (she had some hard times as an abandoned kitty) but she soon warms up to new people. Blue Bell is an indoor/outdoor kitty at her current foster home, a life style she seems to prefer. Blue Bell is current on all necessary vaccinations, has been front lined, wormed, passed her wellness exam, and is so ready to be adopted. Ms. Blue Bell will do well with older children, small

Berwick Academy’s Boys’ Soccer
White drove a corner kick towards the far post, and the lanky Sherbahn elevated above the crowd to knock the header back across the goal mouth and into the opposite top corner. Will Grant played well in the backfield for Berwick, and Andrew Hawkins contributed a solid effort from his holding midfield position. Erik Wisniewski (four saves) opened his senior year with a clean sheet in net.
In the 72nd minute Kat Reid of Dover, N.H., got the final goal of the game.
SOUTH BERWICK –
B e r wi c k Ac a d e my’s b oys’ soccer team outlasted a game group from the Governor’s Academy to post a 1 – 0 win in its home opener recently. The teams battled through a rainy first half to a scoreless draw before lightning forced an extended intermission. The Bulldogs demonstrated an improved possession game and were more disciplined in the defensive end than they had been earlier in the week. D e x t e r D o u c e t t e , Tr e v o r Schaepe, and Andrew Hawkins were effective in the midfield while Zach Flinkstrom and Colin Gaynor worked the wings. Gaynor also delivered some solid scoring opportunities with his service from the corner. When the teams returned to the field following the storm delay Berwick seemed to have the extra fire. Schaepe joined Emile Lebel, Will Grant, and Seth Wyskiel in the backfield, Stephen Sherbahn moved into the center of the field, and Alex Katz and Stephen Terenzio provided energy and pressure up top as the Bulldogs pressed forward. Sherbahn finally broke through in the 75th minute with a 25-yard drive that knuckled below the Govs’ keeper to give Berwick the winning margin, his third tally of the season. Erik Wisniewski had three saves for the Bulldogs en route to his second shutout. Berwick now stands at 2-0-0 overall. The Governors are 0-1-0. Berwick faces three league opponents next facing Lexington Christian Academy, Bancrof t School and Concord Academy. The Bulldogs earlier outlasted the Highlanders of the Pingree School 2-0 on a day when both squads were battling the heat index as much as the opposing team. Neither side played particularly well in the opening half, and possession was generously handed back and forth, but the Bulldogs did open their scoring account with a pretty goal from Stephen Sherbahn at the 20 minute mark. The quality of play for both teams improved after the intermission, and Pingree sent several deep balls into Berwick’s end only to come up empty. With just under 10 minutes remaining Sherbahn struck again, this time through the air. Marshall
Berwick Academy’s Girls’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
The Berwick Academy girls’ soccer team traveled to Groton for its second match of the season against a strong Groton team on a very wide field, dropping a 4-0 decision. Ber wick struggled early to step out of its defensive end and Groton scored on a good shot from outside the 18 yard area in the ninth minute. Just minutes later the host team extended the lead to 2-0 off another good shot and got its third goal at the 20 minutes mark. While the Bulldogs were chasing the ball for most of the remaining time, they worked hard, particularly in the second half as they put Groton under more pressure and good things started to happen. Senior Torieana St.Pierre of Portsmouth, N.H., had 10 saves in net and conceded only one goal in the second half. The Bulldogs are now 1-1. Berwick opened the season with a win at home against Cushing Academy. The Bulldogs’ depth was tested with injuries and temperatures close to or over 100 degrees. The coach subbed regularly and got great play from the whole team. Berwick held a 21-4 advantage on shots and an 11-1 advantage in corners. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 24th minute off a penalty kick by Brooke Downey of Eliot. Cushing struck back in the 48th minute when the ball was crossed from the left flank and a Cushing striker got there just before St. Pierre. In the 55th minute Caroline Hernon of Hampton carried the ball into the 18 and tucked it into the lower right corner to put the Bulldogs up 2-1. Three minutes later the Bulldogs were awarded another penalty kick and Emily Borkowski of Wells scored to make it 3-1.
Marshwood High School Field Hockey SOUTH BERWICK –
The Marshwood High School field hockey team posted three victories recently allowing their Western Maine Class A opponents just a single goal. The victories pushed the Hawks to 4-1 for the season going into a Wednesday game against Bonny Eagle. The Hawks blanked Biddeford 2-0, bested Westbrook 2-1` and shut out Thornton Academy of

SOUTH BERWICK – Matt Russell and Mike Caiazzo took center stage during the Pumpkinman Triathlon Festival last weekend. Russell won the half iron distance race in a course record time of 3:51:53 on Sunday. Caiazzo, the runner up in the 70.3 mile race, won the sprint event in a time of 58:14 on Saturday. The win was the fourth Pumpkinman title of Caiazzo’s career. Connor Jennings finished the sprint in second place for the second consecutive year. He was followed closely by Cameron Piper and Brett Hellstedt, both of whom recently qualified for their licenses as professional tri-
athletes. Professionals Nathan Buttrick, Timothy Tapply, and Marshwood High School teacher, Vinny Johnson, finished third through fifth respectively in the half iron. Jessica Barton edged former champion Catherine Sterling in the women’s sprint event. The finish was one of the closest in the event’s history as only seven seconds separated the two. Nicole Pisani, Andrea Cox, and Robin Sandos all finished in the top five. Amanda Kourtz, 2012 Pumpkinman Half runner See WINNERS page 36... OUTLOOK

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, My D drive is almost full (99%) Is there a way I can clean just this one drive? I would appreciate your help. Thanks for your email and website. Betty Dear Betty, On almost all computers these days, the D drive is not meant for file storage, but instead contains a recovery partition that can be used to recover your computer back to factory condition if needed. This recovery partition is only large enough to store the files needed for reinstalling Windows on your computer. It is meant to be that way. If you have been storing files on the D drive, you need to move those files to your main, C drive, or some sort of external drive. Please be careful though, if you delete any of the recovery files, it will prevent you from recovering your computer if
needed. Hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Dear Computer Lady, I just needed to know the name of the eye saving program you mentioned you used. I am having problems with my eyes and am spending toooo long on my computer without taking breaks. My eyes get very tired among other things. The acupuncture doctor feels it is probably caused by ten-
sion in my neck and eye strain. That program sounded like something that could help me, any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Donna Dear Donna, The program you are asking about is called, Work Rave and you can find it at: http://www.workrave.org/ Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain

Injury, but it would also be great for your eyes as long as you look away from your computer screen during the rest breaks. The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks, and even allows you to set a daily limit. I have used Workrave on all versions of Windows, including Windows 8 and it works great. I usually stretch my neck during

South Berwick Police Chief Announces Candidacy for Sheriff
Dana P. Lajoie (courtesy photo)
SOUTH BERWICK – South Berwick Police Chief Dana P. Lajoie recently announced his candidacy for the position of Sheriff of York County. Dana Lajoie has been the chief of police for the past 25 years and is a lifelong resident of Berwick. During his four decades of law enforcement service, Lajoie has been selected to participate and lead numerous executive
groups such as the York County Jail Advisory Board, multiple regional dispatch consolidation committees and the Seacoast Emergency Response Consortium. He was chief of police liaison to the Bureau of Highway Safety and, in addition to his South Berwick duties, he served as the interim police chief for the Town of Berwick for a two-year period from 1997-1999.
Pierre assisted Sydney Jackman to put Marshwood on top 3-0 at the break. Noble opened its game against the Hawks with a decided advantage in possession and shots but failed to get anything in the net. St. Pierre scored with one minute left in the first half to give Marshwood the lead and Meagan McLean passed to St. Pierre, who scored again seven minutes into the second half to complete the scoring. Coach Luke Edgar said his team’s bench intensified the play in the second half, keeping the pressure on the Noble defense. Gorham maintained more possession which kept Marshwood chasing after the ball. But the Hawks capitalized on some long balls to get the win. Tanya Thomas and named most valuable player in the Ch-
everus game while Lydia St. Pierre and Hannah Folger won similar honors against Noble. St. Pierre, and Macy Morrison were MVP’s against Gorham.
...REVIEW from page 29 Saco 1-0. Lindsey Poirier and Claudia Folger scored first half goals for Marshwood against Biddeford and Karissa Boesch scored in the second half. Coach Lisa Truesdale noted “great overall play” by Jun Shin, Elaine Bachelder and Erica Connors against the Tigers. The game’s most valuable player award was shared by Suzannah Blass, Emily Kahler. It took overtime for the Hawks to get by Westbrook. An unassisted second half goal by Poirier sent the game into overtime and five minutes into the extra session, Boesch scored the goal on a centering pass from Ashley Tice. There was strong defensive play by Shin and Bachelder. Poirier scored a first half goal against Thornton and the MHS defense made it stand up for the
victory. The defense was sparked by Shin and Suzannah Blass. The defense limited Thornton to only two shots on goal.
Marshwood High Girls’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
Mar shwood High School’s girls’ soccer team racked up a neat hat trick last week downing three Western Class Maine Class A opponents. The Hawks bested Cheverus High School of Portland 5-3, Noble High School of Berwick 1-0, and Gorham High School 3-1. Marshwood took the lead 17 minutes into the Cheverus game when Hannah Folger converted a pass from Lydia St. Pierre. Cour tney Stackpole assisted Hailey Tarr for a 2-0 advantage St.
Marshwood High Boys’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –
It been a tough stretch for the Marshwood High School boys’ soccer team as it has dropped a pair of decisions in Western Maine Class A action. The Hawks traveled to Portland to drop a 5-1decision to Cheverus. Marshwood’s goal was scored by Noah McDaniel. The Hawks also dropped a 4-0 decision to Scarborough on the road. Sam Leathe made 14 saves in the loss.

...SAFE HAVEN from page 28 turned with medications. She’ll get another x ray next month to see if her bladder stones have dissolved. You’d think that all this discomfort plus a strange new home after six years would make Anastasia cranky. But no! This adorable plump torti shows only gratitude and joy, which has totally won our volunteers’ hearts. She greets you with a purr and kneads the air blissfully before you can even pet her. She’s as playful as a kitten! We’ve rescued yet another kitty that had no hope. She truly had nowhere to go. The shelter would put her on their wait list,
even though she was in terrible pain and needed immediate help. Other rescue groups were all full, too. Seeing the 50+ kitties in our adoption center only strengthens our determination. We will find a way to keep going, despite our building being for sale. The response to our Building Fund video has been very gratifying. We ask everyone to please donate. Help us raise enough to buy our next home. We have many drives, events and requests for funds running right now. Please donate to one or all of them. Visit www. safehavenhumanesociety and watch our kitties’ homemade video. We know thousands of people in our communities love
animals. A few have the means to leave behind a legacy that will ensure animals will forever have a Safe Haven. Our No-Kill organization is offering naming rights to any person or business who wishes to donate property, or the money to purchase one. Your name will be prominently and thankfully displayed as the benefactor who saved the lives of countless homeless animals. Wouldn’t this be a fitting legacy to someone whose mission in life was kindness and mercy? Perhaps you own a home, farm or land you want to leave behind, with the promise that it will always be used for the purpose of demonstrating a reverence for life. If so, please call Joyce at 2298314. Thank you!
...JUSTICE from page 11 Set in the near future where advanced MRI technology can read your memory, Justice Is Mind follows businessman and restaurant owner Henri Miller who has been afflicted with unexplained headaches since childhood. When he has the new FVMRI procedure and it reveals that he has allegedly shot and killed two people, the trial of the century begins in which Miller is faced with his own memory at trial. But all is not as it seems as a dark family secret, held by Henri’s minister
father Joseph, reveals itself in the courtroom. Lund adds, “With President Obama supporting brain research with a $100 million initiative, recent Supreme Court cases regarding landmark DNA and privacy issues along with a July article in The Atlantic magazine titled ‘Could the Government Get a Search Warrant for Your Thoughts’ Justice Is Mind is a well-timed dramatic feature film.” Justice Is Mind, running time 155 minutes, stars Vernon
Aldershoff (Henri Miller), Robin Ann Rapoport (Margaret Miller), Paul Lussier (John Darrow) and Kim Gordon (Constance Smith). Co-starring Richard Sewell (Joseph Miller), Michele Mortensen (Maria Miller), Carlyne Fournier (Dr. Eve Pullman), Dmitri Aldershoff (Gary Miller), Chara Gannett (Nancy Miller), Mary Wexler (Judge Wagner), Jesse Mangan (Brian Kovski) and Steven Scott (Police Detective For more information, visit www.leavittheatre.com.
...GRANT from page 11 dents, as much of the organization’s work focuses on race relations and conflict resolution strategies, with the goal of reducing youth violence and incarceration. The program will explore specific themes in West Side Story with the students, many of whom have had first-hand experience with the subjects addressed in West Side Story, including prejudice and youth violence. The program will also address the impact that exposure to arts and culture can have on the students’ own creativity and
problem-solving abilities. Tickets are on sale now for the all new production of West Side Story on stage through September 28. Single ticket prices range from $39 to $78 per show. For tickets call the Box Office at 207-646-5511 or online at OgunquitPlayhouse.org. Following West Side Story, Buddy, The Buddy Holly Story returns by popular demand to close the season from October 2 to October 20. For a complete list of show times, pricing and more information about the season, visit www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.
...WINNERS from page 29 up, moved up one spot on the podium this year. Kourtz began the 13.1 mile run in second place, but was able to quickly make her way to the front of the race. She finished in a time of 4:32:56. Angela Bancroft, Shaina Damm, Carolyn Pfalzgraf and Nicole Pisani rounded out the top five women finishers. John Young, a paratriathlete from Salem, MA, returned to Pumpkinman half for the second consecutive year. Young, the event’s final finisher, was cheered to the finish line by dozens of Marshwood High School students and stopped the
clock in a time of 8:51:18. Since its inception in 2007, the Pumpkinman Triathlon Festival has awarded and donated over $400,000 back to the schools and communities in Southern Maine. The Festival hosts over 1100 multisport athletes and 2000 spectators each September. Its success is due in part to the participation and volunteerism of over 400 local volunteers, many of whom are Marshwood High School students.
