Entrepreneur to Donate Record Amount Through Charitable Foundation OGUNQUIT – The Tramuto Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization founded by businessman and philanthropist Donato Tramuto that provides assistance and mentoring opportunities to young people with special challenges, along with grants to nonprofit organizations that assist communities and individuals, has pledged to provide up to $250,000 in grants over the next three years. This is the largest amount of money to be dispersed by the Tramuto Foundation

since its formation in 2001. This latest round of funding, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 in individual grants, will be distributed to three organizations that demonstrate a need and a tradition of commitment to helping others overcome challenges. The grant recipients will be honored at the Tramuto Foundation Gala to be held October 1, 2016, on the 15th anniversary of the organization that Tramuto created in memory of two friends and their son who died

The walk starts at 11 a.m. with checkin beginning at 10 a.m. Each walker agrees to raise a minimum of $25, but most walkers easily average over $200. Organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater New England Chapter, more than 200,000 walkers participate nationwide in Walk MS each year at more than 600 sites, raising over $30 million. Family and corporate Walk teams and volunteers can register online, www.walkMSgne. org, or by calling 1-800-3444867, and in person the day of the Walk. “Without Walk MS, we wouldn’t have the funds for newly diagnosed education and support,” said Heidi Eastman, Programs Manager. “Without Walk MS, we’d be set back 50 years to a time when there were no approved treatments for MS, and there was very little understanding about how MS works.” Last year, nearly 10,000 walkers participated in Walk MS throughout Maine, Mass., N.H., and Vermont, and raised well over $2.6 million. Eightyfive percent of monies raised by

the Chapter provide vital MS education, support, advocacy, and services in the local community, while funding cutting edge research into prevention, treatment, and cure. Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between brain and body and can stop people from moving forward in their lives. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, but teenagers and even young children can have the disease. Eliot Festival Day Scheduled for Sept. 28 ELIOT – Eliot Festival Day, always the last Saturday in September, comes to downtown Eliot on Saturday, Sept. 28 this year. Eames’ talk will focus on the development over time of defensive and offensive ways of war on the Maine frontier. “The early French wars were a time when the Maine frontier was vulnerable to attack from native-led and French-led raiding parties,” he said, referring to the fact that settlers were English, and England was then at war with France. “Towns like Berwick had to rely on support from the Massachusetts government and their own citizens to defend themselves. “After a struggling start, over time the problems of logistics and tactics improved until the people on the Maine frontier learned the proper way of war. ~ News ~ Rethinking, Reusing and Recycling in North Berwick NORTH BERWICK – Two grain silos were disassembled on a farm owned by Jane Thornton of Lebanon Road this week. The farm on which she and her family live was, in times past, a full working dairy farm equipped with a large cow barn and two towering grain silos. A plan to convert her property’s current energy needs to solar, sparked Thornton’s interest in finding a new home for the two concrete structures. She insisted that the silos were not to be merely thrown into a landfill during this process. Thornton contacted members of northern Maine’s Amish

community to solicit their help in reusing these structures. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, she drove to Portland’s Greyhound bus station to pick up the men who would be responsible for disassembling the two silos. Two teams of men from Stacyville and Unity, stepped off the large motor coach prepared to do whatever it took to get the job done. Led by Amish community member Uria Gingerich of Stacyville, they came equipped with all the tools needed for the job, including their own food. They stayed in the former dairy barn overnight, and began the process of dismantling the structures at first light.

Wednesday, Sept. 11 was one of the hottest days on record, but the intense heat was no match for the Amish men of the North. The value these men have for manual labor was ap-

parent during the days deconstruction. Armed with rope, they actively engaged bringing down the structures, speaking in Pennsylvania Dutch, and singing with enthusiasm, until the project was complete. If you would like informa-

YORK – The Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce and Sunrise Grill Restaurant are sponsoring the “Save The Boon Island Fresnel Lens Raffle” to raise the funds the Kittery Historical & Naval Museum needs to keep the Boon Island Lighthouse Fresnel Lens on display. Local Actor Brings Henry VIII to Life in Cape Neddick

Peter Wolf Live in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT – For the first time, New York Rock Legend, Peter Wolf, will be performing live with his band at Jonathan’s Ogunquit on Friday, Sept. 27. Peter Wolf has a history that dates back over fifty years in the music business. Most New Englander’s will remember his role in fronting the J. Geils Band but he came from a family that was quite involved in the arts and he started at a young age in the industry. His father was a dancer, song plugger, disc jockey, and singer of light opera; his mother, an organizer for the civil rights and labor movements, was a teacher for inner-city children in the Bronx. Wolf’s earliest passion was painting, and he was accepted on a scholarship to the Museum of Modern Art’s Special Studies for Children, and later to the High School of Music and Art, just blocks from the Apollo The-

ater, where the young Wolf would make weekly visits. Seeing performers like Jackie Wilson, Dinah Washington, Otis Redding, and James Brown sparked his early interest in blues and R&B. With a grant to study at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, he became a disc jockey on WBCN-FM, hosting a show called The All-Night House Party. The show touched on many musical bases, and reflected Wolf’s own broad musical interests. After 17 years with the J. Geils Band, the band members parted ways and Wolf went on to release his own solo album, Lights Out. In the late 80’s Wolf performed duets with artists, Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin. His latest album, Midnight Souvenirs, was released in 2010. It won the Album of the Year at the Boston Music Awards. “I have been after this concert for about three years now, “

Ogunquit Playhouse Receives Grant from the Maine Arts Commission for West Side Story OGUNQUIT – The Ogunquit Playhouse is the proud recipient of a Great Works grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, in the amount of $5,000 to support its production of West Side Story and an associated student outreach program conducted in partnership with LearningWorks of Portland, Maine. The Ogunquit Playhouse has a superlative heritage of producing the most outstanding theatrical works since 1933 and an ongoing commitment to provide underserved communities the experience of live theatre. Through the Great Works grant program, the Maine Arts Commission offers major support for programs that will have a lasting cultural impact on Maine

audiences. The grant is designed to fund institutions with considerable resources that represent a commitment to excellence. The Great Works grant projects are expected to incorporate a contextual component, such as discussions, programs or classes in partnership with an educational or community institution. West Side Story is an award-winning musical adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The story takes place in New York City with two warring gangs – one white, the other Hispanic – representing the feuding families. Their hatred is juxtaposed against a love story between main characters Tony and Maria. Throughout the show tension escalates, until a tragic and heartbreaking event unites the warring gangs. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield decided to exclude 6 of the 38 hospitals in Maine - York Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, Bridgton Hospital, Rumford Hospital, Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Mercy Hospital - in its new narrow network health insurance marketplace plans. Author Richard Rubin will discuss his latest book, “The Last of the Doughboys: The Forgotten Generation and Their Forgotten World War” on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the library. Rubin’s newest book is a conversational history of America’s experience in World War I as recalled by its last surviving veterans. In 2003, Rubin located and interviewed one living American veteran of World War I, and eventually found dozens more, all aged 101 to 113. is part of a month-long tour designed to focus awareness on the rich musical traditions of Haiti and the importance of the Music School in the life of the country. Holy Trinity is the only music school of its kind in Haiti, and its orchestras, choral groups and concert hall are gems of the country. The school, which offers music education to children of all economic classes through two locations in the Port-auPrince area, was destroyed in the devastating earthquake in 2010. The Music School continues its efforts to rebuild after that terrible natural disaster. The choir, founded in 1960, is a select group of singers ranging in age from 8 to 18. The boys audition as young as age seven, and continue through high school. The choir and music school have continually turned out musically gifted young adults and have contributed to the musical life of the country and the education of these fine young people. Les Petits Chanteurs first toured the United States in 1984. On the current tour, the choir will put on more than 30 concerts from Georgia to Maine and on the West Coast. This concert will be their third visit to York. Previous appearances in 2008 and 2010 were met with rave reviews. Through donations at the door, this musical event will

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – AWS Humane Action League The Humane Action League is an after school program at the Animal Welfare Society on Holland Road, West Kennebunk. Students spend an hour and a half after school, once a week, for eight weeks with the Humane Educator. The program is designed to give students who love animals an opportunity to learn more about the workings of an animal shelter and an introduction on how to become involved in animal welfare issues. At the start of the program the students will create and sign an agreement with each other about acceptable behaviors, as well as, goals for the eight weeks. Tuesday’s program is held from 2:30-4:00pm for students 12-14 years of age. Thursday’s program is held from 3:00-4:30pm for students 9-11 years of age. B e r wi c k Ac a d e my’s b oys’ soccer team outlasted a game group from the Governor’s Academy to post a 1 – 0 win in its home opener recently. The teams battled through a rainy first half to a scoreless draw before lightning forced an extended intermission. The Bulldogs demonstrated an improved possession game and were more disciplined in the defensive end than they had been earlier in the week. D e x t e r D o u c e t t e , Tr e v o r Schaepe, and Andrew Hawkins were effective in the midfield while Zach Flinkstrom and Colin Gaynor worked the wings. Gaynor also delivered some solid scoring opportunities with his service from the corner. When the teams returned to the field following the storm delay Berwick seemed to have the extra fire. Schaepe joined Emile Lebel, Will Grant, and Seth Wyskiel in the backfield, Stephen Sherbahn moved into the center of the field, and Alex Katz and Stephen Terenzio provided energy and pressure up top as the Bulldogs pressed forward. Sherbahn finally broke through in the 75th minute with a 25-yard drive that knuckled below the Govs’ keeper to give Berwick the winning margin, his third tally of the season. Erik Wisniewski had three saves for the Bulldogs en route to his second shutout. Berwick now stands at 2-0-0 overall. The Governors are 0-1-0. Berwick faces three league opponents next facing Lexington Christian Academy, Bancrof t School and Concord Academy. The Bulldogs earlier outlasted the Highlanders of the Pingree School 2-0 on a day when both squads were battling the heat index as much as the opposing team. Neither side played particularly well in the opening half, and possession was generously handed back and forth, but the Bulldogs did open their scoring account with a pretty goal from Stephen Sherbahn at the 20 minute mark. The quality of play for both teams improved after the intermission, and Pingree sent several deep balls into Berwick’s end only to come up empty. Berwick Academy’s Girls’ Soccer SOUTH BERWICK –

The Berwick Academy girls’ soccer team traveled to Groton for its second match of the season against a strong Groton team on a very wide field, dropping a 4-0 decision. Ber wick struggled early to step out of its defensive end and Groton scored on a good shot from outside the 18 yard area in the ninth minute. Just minutes later the host team extended the lead to 2-0 off another good shot and got its third goal at the 20 minutes mark. While the Bulldogs were chasing the ball for most of the remaining time, they worked hard, particularly in the second half as they put Groton under more pressure and good things started to happen. Senior Torieana St.Pierre of Portsmouth, N.H., had 10 saves in net and conceded only one goal in the second half. The Bulldogs are now 1-1. Berwick opened the season with a win at home against Cushing Academy. The Bulldogs’ depth was tested with injuries and temperatures close to or over 100 degrees. The coach subbed regularly and got great play from the whole team. Berwick held a 21-4 advantage on shots and an 11-1 advantage in corners. SOUTH BERWICK – Matt Russell and Mike Caiazzo took center stage during the Pumpkinman Triathlon Festival last weekend. Russell won the half iron distance race in a course record time of 3:51:53 on Sunday. Caiazzo, the runner up in the 70.3 mile race, won the sprint event in a time of 58:14 on Saturday. The win was the fourth Pumpkinman title of Caiazzo’s career. Connor Jennings finished the sprint in second place for the second consecutive year. He was followed closely by Cameron Piper and Brett Hellstedt, both of whom recently qualified for their licenses as professional tri-

athletes. Professionals Nathan Buttrick, Timothy Tapply, and Marshwood High School teacher, Vinny Johnson, finished third through fifth respectively in the half iron. Jessica Barton edged former champion Catherine Sterling in the women’s sprint event. The finish was one of the closest in the event’s history as only seven seconds separated the two. Dear Computer Lady, My D drive is almost full (99%) Is there a way I can clean just this one drive? I would appreciate your help. Thanks for your email and website. Betty Dear Betty, On almost all computers these days, the D drive is not meant for file storage, but instead contains a recovery partition that can be used to recover your computer back to factory condition if needed. This recovery partition is only large enough to store the files needed for reinstalling Windows on your computer. It is meant to be that way. If you have been storing files on the D drive, you need to move those files to your main, C drive, or some sort of external drive. Please be careful though, if you delete any of the recovery files, it will prevent you from recovering your computer if

South Berwick was recently named Best Small Town in Maine to Raise a Child by Bloomberg Business Week. Residents cited the school system, a sense of community involvement and the feeling of a safe environment. Lajoie is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Maine Chief of Police Association and is a respected voice in the Southern Maine District One Chiefs of Police. During this time as law enforcement executive he has helped secure hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding. Lajoie earned an associate’s degree in law enforcement and executive certification from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. He is also a graduate of the Babson College Command School. SOUTH BERWICK – South Berwick Police Chief Dana P. Lajoie recently announced his candidacy for the position of Sheriff of York County. Dana Lajoie has been the chief of police for the past 25 years and is a lifelong resident of Berwick. During his four decades of law enforcement service, Lajoie has been selected to participate and lead numerous executive

groups such as the York County Jail Advisory Board, multiple regional dispatch consolidation committees and the Seacoast Emergency Response Consortium. He was chief of police liaison to the Bureau of Highway Safety and, in addition to his South Berwick duties, he served as the interim police chief for the Town of Berwick for a two-year period from 1997-1999.
