The MGWS Chorus opened the assembly with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner”and included a poetry reading of “In Flander’s Fields” by Gabriell LaBarge, a special thanks to VFW Post 5744 by Mal Kenney and a presentation by USS Miami Crew Members. Students also prepared personal essays for veterans and their families to enjoy. After the assembly was over, a breakfast reception was held. It was a time for the students and faculty to personally thank the veterans who came out to join them.

By Kimberly Ford Contributing Writer NORTH BERWICK On Veterans Day, Senator Angus King was joined by Tim Hussey, president and CEO of Hussey Seating, Inc, and Joe D’Entremont, president of Rolling Thunder Massachusetts Chapter 1, in a dedication ceremony to honor POW/MIA soldiers, as well as veterans everywhere. During Monday’s ceremony, a seat was dedicated in the Hussey Seating showroom to remain perpetually empty as a reminder that despite their abMarshwood Middle School’s Veterans Day Celebration was held on Nov. 8. It was the school’s eleventh annual celebration. The school-wide assembly began at 8:30 a.m., with students greeting their honored guests with handshakes and thank yous. As the celebration continued, students, faculty, local police and fire department members, town officials and state representatives joined to pay tribute to veterans through songs, readings and power point presentations. The emotional and touching experience emphasized the importance of understanding the sacrifices veterans have made and continue to make. Both events represent the community’s respect for its veterans.

This day is for you!” Rolling Thunder, a motorcycle club founded to publicize the POW/MIA issue, has been working with Hussey Seating company for almost two years to dedicate “chairs of honor” and place them in venues across Massachusetts. Chairs currently sit in Fenway Park, Gillette Stadium, and TD Bank Garden.

KITTERY Whaleback Lighthouse, a 70-foot granite tower on a waveswept ledge at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, is familiar to many as an historic icon of the New Hampshire Seacoast and Southern Maine. In 2009, stewardship of this maritime jewel was awarded to Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses (FPHL), a

chapter of the nonprofit American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF). FPHL has completed some basic cleanup and weatherproofing of the structure, and plans are being developed to install a dock that will facilitate public access and further restoration. Complete restoration is likely to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars over the next several years.

FPHL and ALF have announced a very special fundraising event for Whaleback Lighthouse. On Dec. 7, Gary Sredzienski of Kittery, Maine, will swim five miles in frigid waters, and FPHL is asking that people honor Sredzienski’s incredible commitment and passion by making a donation to this cause. Sredzienski is a worldrenowned accordionist who is also known as “Creekman” because of his amazing swimming exploits in the waterways around Portsmouth and Kittery. Each winter, Sredzienski chooses a charity to benefit. To date, his six charity swims have raised more than $60,000 in total. Sredzienski will begin his swim at 2 p.m. from the edge of the parking lot at the Kittery Trading Post on Spruce Creek. Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee Helping Students Participate in Extracurriculars OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee is pleased to announce a new fund set up for the use of the Wells Ogunquit CSD. As part of its mission, the Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee helps the dreams of children throughout the state to come true. The Committee, which is coming into its ninth season of providing holiday gifts for children in need, estimates that they have provided over $100,000 worth of gifts to children in the Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine (AFFM) and Frannie Peabody Center programs. “The long-term generosity of our community astounds me,” says committee member, Jimmy Lucibello. “So far this year we have over 100 sponsors signed up, but we need more support,” added Brian Linden. Each year at the culminating holiday party, a raffle is held to cover the costs of supplies, last minute forgotten gifts, and postage. Last year, thanks to the generosity of Frannie Peabody Center case workers who drove last minute gifts to AFFM in Old Town, the committee had money left over. The committee decided to expand its reach and do something for children right here in the community with the excess. After a meeting with the new Superintendent of Schools, Ellen Schneider, it was decided to provide money for a fund to help children who may want to participate in extra-curricular activities, but may not have the money for supplies. “As a committee, we realize

how important these group activities are to raising socially responsible kids, and we want to make sure that no child is turned away for lack of equipment funds,” says committee member Frances

Reed. The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee is donating $500 of their excess funds to the Wells-Ogunquit High School, to be put into a dedicated fund. The

With dedicating a chair in the Hussey Showroom, he is hoping it will spark desire for others to join the movement. As of now, Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, and Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey, have committed. “We’ve got two, but we want a whole lot more,” D’Entremont says. Following D’Entremont’s remarks, Senator King spoke very enthusiastically about his appreciation for veterans everywhere.

“It shouldn’t only be once a year that we remember the people who made the sacrifice,” he said. He recalled his Veterans Day morning beginning with a singing of the national anthem. He brought to everyone’s attention that America is the only country with an anthem that ends with a question. To this he stated, “I believe the answer to that question is contained in itself. The land of the free and the home of the brave. We will only be the land of the free as long as we remain the home of the brave. And that’s what our veteran’s are, above all else, brave.” Senator King reminds us all, although the chair of honor is dedicated to those soldiers who

Members of Rolling Thunder chapters from all over New England showed their support with unwavering presence. Ten year Rolling Thunder Maine Chapter 1 member, Brian Caton, was very passionate about spreading the word of Rolling Thunder’s mission. “We need to keep the names of these POWs in the limelight,” he said, specifically mentioning current POW Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who has been in captivity since 2009. Hussey closed the ceremony with a reading of the actual inscription that is, and will forever be, imprinted on each chair of honor across the nation. The inscription states,”You are not forgotten. Since WWI more than 91,000 soldiers are unaccounted for. This unoccupied seat is dedicated to the memory of those brave men and women, and to the sacrifices each made serving this country.”

~ News ~ WHS’s O’Brien Named Semifinalist in 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program WELLS Wells High School senior Kyle O’Brien of Wells has been named a Semifinalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. He achieved this status by scoring highly on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test or PSAT/NMSQT in his junior year. According to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), approximately 1.5 million high

school juniors from over 22,000 high schools took the PSAT/ NMSQT in 2012. Based upon test results, 16,000 were selected to become Semifinalists. “It’s definitely pretty cool to know that I am the only one in the school,” responded O’Brien when asked what it was like to become a Semifinalist. Landeros said he spoke often about doing something big, and in November of 2011 he decided it was time to put up or shut up. “Either I needed to stop talking about it, or I needed to go through with it,” recalled Landeros. It took Landeros only five months to get things in order for his endeavor. He sold his apartment and much of his clothes and raised the $3,000 he decided he would need to successfully make it from Los Angeles to Portland. He set a target of $100 million to raise for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and admits those aspirations might have been a bit lofty. “Maybe I was a bit naive,”

said Landeros. “I thought all of my friends and family would jump on the bandwagon, but that wasn’t the case. Overall, I was pretty pleased with how it all turned out.” While Landeros’ charity and sacrifice will positively impact children in need, his life was certainly enriched by his journey too. “I have been really surprised by the amount of strangers who have helped me along the way,” said Landeros. “I want to thank the people who welcomed me into their home and allowed me to share a meal with them.” Throughout his adventure, Landeros found himself spending nights in many small towns. One of those small towns was Ogunquit, where he spent a night at the

It was the small towns that made the biggest impression on Landeros. “I have seen a lot of cities, but it is great to see the smaller towns and how the communities come together.” During his year-and-a-half long trip, Landeros would walk close to 35 miles a day and spent most of his time in solitude, but that didn’t seem to bother him. “Some people ask me if I get lonely, and a lot of the time I say no,” said Landeros. “Walking is almost like a meditation in a way. My thoughts are my own entertainment.” Landeros returned home to Los Angeles on Nov. 2, and will now have to resume the life that he put on hold for a year-and-ahalf. He will have to find a new job. He will have to find a place to live. But he will not have to come up with a new plan to raise money for children in need. His experience walking across the country has inspired him to write a book about his travels. He will donate proceeds from the sales to schools and charities nationwide. For a man who has been on the move for quite some time, taking it easy is not an option. “This experience has made me want to do a whole lot more.”

Colonial Maine Indians Remembered at Old Berwick Historical Society Lecture SOUTH BERWICK The Indians whom the Pilgrims befriended in Massachusetts often come to mind at this time of year. But Native Americans living in Northern New England are shrouded in mystery. At an upcoming lecture sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society, Dr. Ellen Cowie will discuss the French in Maine during the 16th through 18th centuries, with a particular emphasis on the Wabanaki village of Norridgewock. The archaeological information from this site has provided rich insight into the history of one Native American community located on the embattled frontier of French, English and Wabanaki colonial America. Entitled, “The French and Wabanaki in Maine: The View from Norridgewock,” Cowie’s talk will be Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 pm at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served by volunteers. The program is the concluding lecture in the historical society’s 2013 series marking the 300th anniversary of Berwick’s formation, when it separated from Kittery in 1713. Monthly historical talks and walks have been presented under grants from Kennebunk Savings and the Maine Humanities Council. Cowie is the president and co-director of the Northeast Archaeology Research Center, located in Farmington, Maine. She started her career in northeastern archaeology in 1983 at Munsungun Lake in northern Maine and Fort Pentagoet in Castine while an undergraduate student at University of Maine. She became the director of the University of Maine at Farmington Archaeology Research Center in 1997. Cowie received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 2002. Her dissertation

research focused on the Contact Period and Norridgewock villages in Maine – when Europeans and Indians encountered each other during 17th century. Her recent research focuses on riverine adaptations with an emphasis on the adoption of maize horticulture by native

Passage of the bond to reconstruct Wells High School would not have been possible were it not for the many individuals who stepped forward to assist in this endeavor. Public comment is the first agenda item for each meeting. Please consider voicing your opinion or serving on a subcommittee. Subcommittee needs will be published frequently. ~ News ~ Christmas Concert to Showcase Contemporary Composers SOUTH BERWICK Although our culture continues to place diminishing value on classical music, most people have little or no difficulty reeling off the names of at least a few illustrious 20th century orchestral composers. But when it comes to choral composers, names do not emerge so quickly, if at all. With its upcoming Christmas concert, “A Boy Was Born,” the Community Chorus at South Berwick, directed by Harry Moon, will do its part to rectify this imbalance.Performances will take place Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fox Run Road, Newington, N.H., and Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Kennedy Performing Arts Center, Marshwood High School, Route 236, South Berwick, Maine. Focusing on the theme of the Nativity, Moon has assembled a program, which, aside from two Renaissance pieces to be sung by the chorus’s Chamber Voices, is made up entirely of 20th and 21st century arrangements of traditional carols and original works. Chances are, audiences will recognize the names of only two of the composers in this latter group: Benjamin Britten and Francis Poulenc, both are known as much for their

instrumental works as for their choral writing. Lack of familiarity with the rest of the composers on the program – Peter Aldins, Chester Alwes, Jackson Berkey, Michael Fink, Derek Healey, Mykola Leontovich, Peter Wilhousky, William Mathias, and Stephen Paulus – should not cast doubt on their contributions to choral music. In addition to their composing and arranging, the members of this group have achieved distinction as choral conductors, performers and music educators. For example, Peter Wilhousky, arranger and writer of the English lyrics for a Ukrainian Christmas melody that became the American standard “Carol of the Bells,” was a master at organizing and training choruses. In 1937 he founded the 260-voice All City High School Chorus of New York. For the next three decades he conducted this group in annual concerts at Carnegie Hall and later at Lincoln Center. Because this was an all-student chorus, Wilhousky had to work with a different set of singers every year, as some graduated and others rotated in. Many former choristers from this group went on to careers at the Metropolitan Opera, New

York City Opera and in Broadway musicals. Their concerts so impressed conductor Arturo Toscanini, that he hired Wilhousky to rehearse the choruses he used in his NBC Symphony broadcasts. Wihousky also served on the faculty at Juilliard, taught master classes in choral conducting and vocal ensemble training, and conducted at music festivals throughout the U.S. Jackson Berkey’s compositional output includes 107

choral pieces. As keyboardist with the classical/light jazz group, Mannheim Steamroller, he has performed on more than 30 recordings, 11 of them Christmas albums. His arrangement of “Silent Night” in the CCSB program offers different rhythm and harmonies from what most listeners are used to hearing. Stephen Paulus, whose “Three Nativity Carols” suite forms the centerpiece of the CCSB program, is an example

of how a composer can be on top of the choral music ladder yet still be relatively unknown to the general population. Tickets are $10 in advance and for seniors and students, $12 at the door; to encourage family attendance, tickets are $5 for ages under 12. Kennebunk High School Presents: “The Children’s Tour

KENNEBUNK Lillian Hellman’s masterpiece, “The Children’s Hour”, will be presented by the Kennebunk High School Visual and Performing Arts Department on Friday and Saturday evenings, Nov. 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m.. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 24. “The Children’s Hour,” daring for the 1930s when it opened, fitting for the 50s when revived, is still powerful and relevant in 2013. It is the story of Karen and Martha, two young teachers whose lives are changed forever by a child’s lie. The drama became famous again in 1962 when Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine, starred in the film version. The KHS production features an outstanding ensemble cast including Linda Line as

Karen, Elizabeth Ayotte as Martha, Victoria Sweet as Mary Tilford, Zanna Spinney as Amelia Tillford, Alexander Vesenka as Dr. Joe Cardin, Caroline Smith as Lily Mortar, Elise Schwebler as Rosalie Wells, along with Jaala Boothby, Maia Mulcahy, Maddy Shmalo, Mary Sachs, Meira Clark, MacKenzie Genest, Ivana Mulcahy, Madison Snyder and Taylor Rossics. Singer-Songwriters Baker and Werth to Appear in South Berwick SOUTH BERWICK Award-winning singersongwriters T.S. Baker and Craig Werth come to South Berwick on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. for the third show in the FPFC Concert Series at First Parish Federated Church. Spotlight Award winner T.S. Baker will return to the stage for her first performance in nearly 10 years. Her hiatus came after the release of her muchanticipated 2003 solo debut, “Through the Shadows.” Dirty Linen called the CD, “A perfect blend of country and folk music with enough of a jolt to send your heart skipping across stars ... [and] enough pop sensibility to rub elbows with Shawn Colvin on Top-40 radio.” From 1993 through 1997, along with her husband Stan Moeller, Baker released three highly touted CDs. The Boston Globe called the duo, “Incredible ... breaking all the musical molds.” But in the late 90s, Baker decided to concentrate more on songwriting and received plenty of notice for her masterful tunes. She was named a finalist in several national contests, including

the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival’s “New Folk Competition” in both 2000 and 2002. Past finalists have included the likes of Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry and South Berwick’s own Slaid Cleaves, to name a few. After three fine, albeit under-the-radar CDs (two solo and one with Guy Capecelatro III), in 2006 Craig Werth garnered the attention of three-time Juno Award winner, David Francey. Werth brought his instrumentation and arranging skills to Francey’s music, helping him to flesh out his songs, which the Toronto Star call, “small and beautifully crafted pieces of work.” Since joining Francey, Werth has toured the world and shared a Juno with him for coproducing “Rites of Passage,” winner in the best traditional and roots album category. Because of Werth’s exposure performing with Francey, his own masterful songwriting and instrumental prowess have helped him find a fan-base of See CONCERT page 18...

KENNEBUNK The Tom Luther Quintet (TLQ) will be bringing their unique brand of jazz to River Tree Arts in Kennebunk on Friday, Nov. 15. The music of TLQ is an eclectic mix that balances the harmonic and rhythmic language of jazz, the formal aspects of European classical music, and the colors of ambient music and the avante garde. The style of the music is heavily influenced by the “downtown” scene of New York City, as epitomized by artists like Tom Harrell and John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, as well as by jazz greats Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock. “Herbie Hancock has been a huge influence on me over the last few years” says pianist and composer Tom Luther. “His album of Joni Mitchell’s music has had a profound impact on me and is largely the reason we have these ‘new standards’ mixed in.” Some of the new covers include the music of Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Til Tuesday, and Steve Earle. “This is definitely a trend of late, with bands like the Bad Plus and Brad Mehldau all performing their takes on pop tunes, but really, this is what jazz artists have always done,” comments trumpeter Mike Whitehead. “Miles used quite a few of the pop tunes of the day as vehicles for improvisation, including folks like Cindi Lauper. What we are doing is really no different. We’re just drawing from

tunes of a different generation.” While TLQ clearly has a strong connection to jazz language, Luther incorporates elements from other genres into the music. The tune “Storm” features a harmonic outline that is first played forward, and then backwards. “I pulled that idea from the ‘crab canons’ of JS Bach, and its a cool music geek thing to be able to talk about, but for the listener, it creates this really nice emotional pyramid,” says Luther The title track from the band’s album, “Everything Is Blue”, emphasizes the flexibility of form. Soloists will “call” for a chord change be playing specific melodic material. “This technique creates a firm benchmark for the listener, and gives each solo section definite closure, which in turn gives the next soloist a clean slate and allows the ear to reset.” says Luther. TLQ is comprised of Gideon Forbes (reeds), Mike Whitehead (trumpet/flugelhorn), Tom Luther (piano), Duane Edwards (bass), and Jacob Forbes (drums). The group will be performing these “new standards” music from their first album, “Everything Is Blue”, and music to be included in an upcoming second album, entitled “Approaching Autumn”. Health & Fitness Holiday Menu Planning for First-Time Hosts Novice holiday hosts often have a lot on their plates. Whether hosting family or friends or a combination of both, first-time hosts typically want to impress their guests while ensuring they get enough to eat and have an enjoyable evening. Since dinner is such a big part of holiday gatherings, hosts often place extra emphasis on what to serve, and that can be tricky when this is the first time they are hosting. When planning the menu for your holiday soiree, consider the following tips. Get a head count Though other factors will influence what to serve, the size of your guest list may ultimately dictate what to serve. For example, a small gathering of four to five people will likely rule out turkey, as even a small turkey will prove too much effort and produce too much extra food. On the same note, a small dish like lasagna might not be doable for a larger crowd, as it will force you to prepare multiple entrees, which means more time in the kitchen juggling the various cooking duties and less time with your guests. Once you have confirmed just how many guests you will be hosting, you can then choose a main course that suits the size of your guest list. Decide which type of party you want to host The type of party you want to host also will influence what you serve. A formal gathering should include an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, including both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees. A less formal gathering gives hosts more leeway. For example, whereas a formal gathering may include soup as an appetizer, hosting a less formal gathering allows hosts to put out some snacks or bread for guests to whet their appetites before everyone sits down for the meal. The more formal the gathering, the more formal the menu. Hosts of less formal gatherings may even want to host a holiday pot luck buffet, inviting guests to bring a favorite dish or side dish while the hosts take care of the main course. Health & Fitness Why Adults Must Understand Their Flu Vaccine Options With the 2013-2014 flu season officially here, it’s important to consider the single best way to prevent influenza (commonly known as “the flu”) - the flu vaccine. What many older adults don’t know is that the immune system weakens with age, meaning older adults are at a higher risk for flu and related complications. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized each year from flu-related illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Adults aged 65 and older typically account for more than half (60 percent) of these hospitalizations and almost all (90 percent) of flurelated deaths, the CDC reports. To help spread the word about this serious public health issue, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has launched the second year of Flu + You, an educational program that encourages older adults and their caregivers to learn about the seriousness of the flu, the importance of annual vaccination, and vaccine options for adults 65 and older. Actor Lee Majors, best known for his iconic television role as The Six Million Dollar Man, is joining the campaign this year as a national spokesperson. “According to the CDC, the leading reason older adults do not get the flu vaccine is because they are unaware they need it,” says Majors. “I get the flu shot every year and encourage my peers to do the same. It’s a simple step you can take to help protect yourself from the flu.” The flu can make existing health conditions worse, and it is especially dangerous for people with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and cancer, conditions that commonly affect older adults. Nationwide, 86 percent of adults 65 years of age and older have at least one chronic health condition and approximately 66 percent of Medicare beneficiaries have two or more chronic conditions, according to the CDC. These conditions put them at increased risk of the flu and flu-related complications, which include hospitalization and even death. “The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine as the single best way to protect yourself from the flu, yet a third of

people 65 and older still don’t get vaccinated,” says Dr. Richard Birkel, NCOA senior vice president for Healthy Aging and Director of NCOA’s Self-Management Alliance. “As NCOA continues to educate older adults about the flu and the potential severity of the illness, we hope to encourage more people to help protect themselves and their loved ones by getting an annual flu shot.” There are now many types See FLU page 17...

Pink Carpet Event Raises $114,000 for Breast Cancer Patients PORTSMOUTH, N.H. An evening of glitz, glamour, giggles and giving. That description fits last week’s “Pink Carpet: Bags, Baubles and the Best of Everything” dinner and auction at Portsmouth Harbor Events that raised $114,000 for York Hospital’s Breast Cancer Living Well Fund. Through the generosity of hundreds of donors, businesses, attendees, volunteers, and the newly named York Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year - the Pink Pals - many cancer patients at York Hospital will be able to utilize supportive programs and services to soften their breast cancer journey. Over 300 guests attended the soldout event, emceed by Channel 5’s Randy Price and organized by Pals Ellen Baldwin, Cathy Barnhorst, Barbara Conda and Leslie Ware. Celebrities among the crowd included singer-song-

writer and TV personality Kara DioGuardi, who donated two cocktail parties at her Seacoast area home and belted out her lyrics from the Carrie Underwood hit song, “Undo It.” Chef Mary Ann Esposito donated a day on the set of her “Ciao Italia” cooking show. Donations were auctioned by Maureen Boyd of Boyd Auctions as part of a live auction which brought in $25,000 alone. Cancer survivor Dot Bolton moved the crowd with her speech about how the Breast Cancer Living Well fund, and the staff at York Hospital, helped her through her diagnosis and treatment. “Through every test, poking, prodding, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation they encouraged me, sent uplifting cards, explained the process and were just there to listen,” she said. Go Red For Women Event Inspires York County Women to Take Charge of Their Heart Health KENNEBUNKPORT About 150 guests, mostly dressed in red, gathered on Oct. 22 at the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport for the American Heart Association’s (AHA) ninth annual Go Red For Women event. The event raised close to $30,000 in support of awareness, research, and community programs to combat cardiovascular diseases among women. Emceed by WMTW 8 Anchor, Tracy Sabol, the program began with remarks from Lisa Randall, Vice President of Asset and Liability at Kennebunk Savings, who served as the 2013 Event Chairwoman. “I have met many people through the American Heart Association over the years with so many wonderful stories that might have had different endings had they not known and listened to their signs. They insisted on diagnosis and treatment rather than having a catastrophic ending,” said Randall. “I attribute much of this to education, awareness and technology improvements. What I have also learned over the years is that heart issues and heart disease can be silent illnesses that creep up on you if you do not know the signs or symptoms.” Prior to the speaking program and dinner, guests placed their bids on diverse silent auction items with goods and services donated by local businesses. Attendees

also enjoyed wine and chocolate demonstrations, sponsored by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, every 15 minutes hosted by Dr. Samuel DiCapua. York heart disease survivor Dwyer Leahy Vessey shared her story of an unexpected mid-life diagnosis of congestive heart failure and why the Go Red movement’s awareness and education helped save her life. Her message was to encourage guests to pay attention to their hearts and take action if something doesn’t seem right. Randall later presented the AHA’s 2013 Crystal Heart Award to Denise Rubin, owner of On the Marsh Bistro in Kennebunk. This award is presented each year to a local woman who has made a positive impact in her community. Two educational breakout sessions were also offered to guests. Kennebunk Savings Bank sponsored a workshop entitled “Meditation and Mindfulness” presented Kelly McInnes, of Food Heals Maine at the Riverbend Wellness Center in Arundel. A second workshop, sponsored by Atlantic Pest Control, called “Treating/ Preventing Heart Disease Naturally” was presented by Diana Sainte of Family Acupuncture Center of Saco. Goodall Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center held Healthy Heart Screenings which included both cholesterol and blood pressure readings. To add to the fun, local florists created unique floral centerpieces to coincide with

the event’s theme, “Heart and Soul”, using shoes as the decorative base for the arrangements. These arrangements were judged by the Old York Garden Club in a variety of categories. Portland’s Downtown District Hosts Shop for a Cause Day

PORTLAND Portland’s Downtown District is hosting its annual Shop for a Cause Day on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. Shop for a Cause Day is a unique way for businesses to give back to the community, while encouraging shoppers to “buy local” this holiday season. This year, participating stores and galleries will donate a portion of their sales from that day to the Milestone Foundation’s HOME Team. The Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement Team, or HOME Team is collaboration between the City of Portland, The Milestone Foundation and the Portland Downtown District. The HOME Team offers on-the-spot intervention to help guide homeless individuals (many with mental health and chronic substance abuse issues) to appropriate social service agencies. It also plays a proactive role in engaging with individuals on the streets who may be exhibiting disruptive or unsafe behaviors. Their interventions result in significant

~ News & Library News ~ York Public Library Presents: “Finding My Voice with Aphasia” YORK Life stories of triumph over personal tragedies can be a source of inspiration and guidance. This is especially true when someone turns her tragedy and triumph into a formal account. In her newly published memoir, “Finding My Voice with Aphasia: Walking through Aphasia,” educator Carol M. Maloney presents an incredibly inspiring story of tenacity, grace and undeterred resolve. On June 9, 2009, Maloney

experienced a transient ischemic attack in the left hemisphere of her brain. Her mind deteriorated to the point where she could not speak, walk, read or recall her family. “‘You may never speak again’ were the first words I heard after my stroke” recalls Maloney. “As a dedicated veteran teacher I was heartbroken and devastated. Within seconds I became one of my beloved special education and reading disabled students”. What is aphasia? Aphasia is the inability to communicate, along with loss of cognitive, organizational and reading skills which plummeted Carol Maloney from an Adolescent Literacy PhD candidate to a fourth grade level person. “I constantly pointed to my head and then to my mouth indicating I could not express myself”, recounts Maloney. “My rehabilitation journey was hallmarked with hard work and perseverance”. During this time, her speech therapist encouraged

Bradford M. Dutch, 100 NORTH BERWICK Bradford M. Dutch, current holder of the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen in town, died Nov. 10, 2013 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford, Maine. He was 100 years old. He was born October 20, 1913 in Wells, Maine, son of Chester Floyd and Jessie Deborah (Chase) Dutch. Brad will be remembered as a well respected Dairy and Vegetable Farmer as well as the local butcher from his earlier years. Visiting Hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 15 from 6 p. m.to

8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, Maine, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Earl Lederer officiating. Diane Connell, Ed.D. who provides an endorsement of the book. “The frustration of having the words and sentences formed in her mind but being unable to share them caused frustration and depression”. Now, three years after her stroke, Maloney continues to improve and has become a dedicated advocate in aphasia awareness. Maloney says of herself, “I’m inspired to reach out to other stroke survivors and the aphasia population to offer in-

This year we saw a lot more kids from all over the region. We had families stop in saying they came from Rochester, Somersworth, Milton, Dover, Farmington, Wakefield, Sanford, Acton, Shapleigh, North Berwick, Berwick, South Berwick, Alfred, Waterboro and more. It was a huge success and it went very smoothly.” Over 750 gift bags filled with rescue helmets, rescue coloring books, badges, temporary tattoos, crayons, small toys and candy were handed out to kids. In addition to these 750 gift bags handed out, hundreds of parents who stopped in and were able to meet their local rescue crews. “Belgian Meadow Farms once again donated a lot of pumpkins to be given away to the kids for the event. Steve Collins has

The kids were able to go to a pumpkin patch designed at the station and pick one out and bring it upstairs to decorate it and they really seemed to love that. We do this event each year to offer a safe alternative to families for trick or treating while at the same time meeting some of their local rescue workers. The event was a huge success and I thank everyone involved for making it such a great event for the kids.” Chief Samantha Cole added. This is the 10th annual event for the rescue department. During the past few years, weather has cancelled part of the event. Two years ago, nearly a foot of snow cancelled the first night of the two-day event. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My desktop is a two-yearold HP. I had been leaving it on and just moving the mouse to wake it up. The past two or three months, it won’t wake up. I have to do a “hard” shutdown and restart. I know this is not a good thing to do because it can damage the hard drive. I now shut it down and restart it every time I use it which is a rather slow process! Could it possibly be the monitor? What do I need to do? Love, love, love, your helpful news letter. Suzanne Dear Suzanne, I’ll give you the easy answer first. No, it is not your monitor. It sounds like the power settings are giving you some trouble. This is one of the most common issues I have seen with Windows. It could have been caused by going for long stretches of time without shutting down the computer, or it could just be something is corrupt. I always suggest that you shut down your computer at the end of each day, and start it up

fresh in the morning. Only use the sleep feature during the day. Now that your computer won’t wake up, you will either need to fix the problem, turn off the automatic sleep settings, or continue to shut it down after each use. You can adjust the sleep settings in the Control Panel. Open the “Hardware and Sound” and then, “Power Options” sections. Sometimes changing the settings will fix the problem, or just change all the settings to, “Never” to keep your computer on. If you are still having problems, bring your computer into my shop (or a local shop if you don’t live nearby) and I can help you solve the problem. There are some things that I wish it had (like a start menu) but for the most part, it runs smoothly, and does what I want it to do. However, there are some things that you can do to make Windows 8 look more like older versions of Windows. Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Humane Action League The Humane Action League is an after school program at the Animal Welfare Society on Holland Road, West Kennebunk. Students spend an hour and a half after school, once a week, for eight weeks with the Humane Educator. The program is designed to give students who love animals an opportunity to learn more about the workings of an animal shelter and an introduction on how to become involved in animal welfare issues. At the start of the program the students will create and sign an agreement with each other about acceptable behaviors, as well as, goals for the eight weeks. Tuesday’s program is held from 2:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. for students 12-14 years of age. Thursday’s program is held from 3 p.m. 4:30 p.m. for students 9-11. The next sessions begin on Dec. 3 and 5. SPORTS Two Old Rivals to Meet for Regional Championship By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer KENNEBUNK They’ve been meeting each other on the football field for a lot of years, but few of those games have meant as much as the one they’ll play Saturday, Nov. 17. The teams from Marshwood High of South Berwick and Kennebunk High School will tangle at 12:30 p.m. for the Western Maine Class B championship and a berth in the state final a week later. Marshwood will be seeking to defend its 2012 regional title while Kennebunk strives to maintain its perfect record in its first year in Class B. It will be the second meeting of the teams this season with the host Rams owners of a 21-14 victory over the Hawks. Marshwood, 8-2 for the season thus far, has already gained a measure of revenge for one their regular season losses, besting York in the semifinals, and now looks forward to the chance to avenge the other. Last week Marshwood torched York 45-16 to advance to the regional final, while Kennebunk was sorely tested by Westbrook before recording a 17-15 decision. The winner of the West-

ern title will take on the Eastern winner, either Brunswick or Cony High of Augusta. Brunswick defeated Skowhegan 42-28 last week and Cony bested Messalonskee of Oakland 41-15. A year ago Marshwood edged York for the Western crown 21-20, but lost a shootout to Mt. Blue of Farmington, 44-42, in the state final. Kennebunk was defeated in the Class A quarterfinals last year by eventual state champion Thornton Academy of Saco, 42-34. Thornton beat Lawrence of Fairfield in the state final. Lawrence gained the state championship game by ousting Cony. York bested Marshwood 28-18 in the regular season finale, spotting the Hawks a two-touchdown lead before roaring back for the victory. In the semifinals Marshwood opened quickly, again, and this time the defense wasn’t about to let the Wildcats back into the game. The Hawks led 18-0 at the break, and when Brett Gerry returned an interception for a touchdown the Hawks were on top 25-0 and the chances of a York rally fell by the wayside. Marshwood’s ability to successfully stymie York’s usually powerful running game was

clearly a major factor in the victory. Things were more exciting in Kennebunk, when a late Ram mistake followed by a Blue Blazer touchdown and two-point conversion gave Westbrook a 15-14 lead and put the Kennebunk winning streak and perfect season in danger. A furious last-minute drive ending with an 18-yard field goal by Jake Larry earned the Rams a spot in the regional final and kept the season’s record perfect. The kick sailed through the uprights with less than six seconds to play. The Rams were up 14-7 and had the ball deep in Westbrook territory but a fumbled snap was picked up by Kyle Heath who dashed 80 yards for the score. Westbrook added the two-point conversion on a run by Collin Joyce setting the stage for the late Rams rally. Kennebunk defeated the Hawks 21-14 at home during the regular season. The Rams built a 21-0 halftime lead and then had to fall back on its stellar defense to hold off the fast closing Hawks. The narrowest margin of victory for Kennebunk until the Class B Western Maine semifinal was the seven-point decision over Marshwood.

Berwick Academy Boys’ Soccer CONCORD, Mass. -

In what proved to be a scrappy game against a very talented and fluid Concord side, Berwick came out the victors 2-1, after skirting a late game onslaught by the determined hosts on Nov. 6. On what was a remarkably beautiful day for early November, Berwick unleashed some positive energy to open the match. It wasn’t long before Stephen Sherbahn broke loose toward the left corner of the penalty area before crossfooting the goalie, sending a low driven shot into the opposite corner, opening up the scoring. The visitors continued to trade possession with the 10-2-2 Concord team, defending their dangerous corners, though neither side created any grade-A opportunities. Happy to see the game 1-0 at the break, BA consolidated its forces, recognizing that the game was anywhere but in the bag. With the hosts enjoying most of the possession, and starting to find some breaks into our penalty area, BA rearranged a few things, bringing Seth Wyskiel onto the field, replacing an injured Trevor Schaepe, stretching the legs of fresh forwards Alex Katz and Stephen Terenzio and moving Gabe Evensen into the midfield. Approaching the mid-point of the second half, Emile Lebel slyly slipped a free kick from the center circle over to Jack McCraven who drove a long diagonal cross into the box. Catching the goalie off-guard,

the ball struck the cross bar and rebounded into a crowd, where feisty left-winger James Ordway bravely rose above the rest and knocked the ball into the side netting, giving BA a 2-0 advantage. Undeterred by this, Concord poured things on for the remaining 18 minutes, scoring once, and nearly twice, if not for two spectacular doorstep stops by Erik Wisniewski. When the final whistle sounded several minutes into extra-time, a very satisfied litter of bulldogs departed the field, recognizing that hope still existed for a possible post-season berth.

Berwick Academy Girls’ Soccer SOUTH HAMILTON, Mass. -

Pingree bested the Berwick Academy ladies 3-2 in overtime at the Nov. 9 EIL Tournament. Siobahn McDermott (North Andover, Mass.) and Emily Borkowski (Wells, Maine) did the scoring for Berwick, while Caroline Hernon (Hampton, N.H.) and Aimee Briand (Barrington, N.H.) added strong performances. Torieana St. Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.) made seven saves and Christina Grassie (Somersworth, N.H.) made five saves, but it wasn’t enough to get past Pingree. In Berwick’s second matchup of the day, Lexington Christian Academy took the victory 3-1. Becca Siegel ( York, Maine) scored off of an assist from Georgia Barlow (South Berwick, Maine) late in the second half to keep Berwick

alive, but Lexington held on to the two-goal lead. The Bulldogs’ record is currently a combined 10-8-1.

Berwick Academy Field Hockey SOUTH HAMILTON, Mass. -

Berwick Field Hockey won two games on Nov. 9 to complete an improbable underdog victory in the top bracket of the Eastern Independent League Championship. Berwick began the day by beating the tournament’s second seed, Pingee, in a 1-0 sudden death overtime victory. Izzy Eldridge scored the clinching goal with less than a minute left in overtime. Berwick then faced Concord Academy in the championship game. The tension surrounding the game reached a fever pitch as Concord had defeated Berwick 4-1 the previous Wednesday. Eager to avenge this loss, Julia Mini and Tatiana Bradley connected on a penalty corner to put Berwick up 1-0 early in the first half. Kristin Jones scored soon after giving Berwick a 2-0 lead going into halftime. The Bulldogs held strong in the second half by dominating possession. Eldridge picked up her second goal of the day with a minute left in the game, sealing Berwick’s 3-0 championship victory. This marked Berwick’s first upper bracket EIL championship since the reintroduction of the field hockey program at the school in 2009.

Seacoast Christian Girls Win MAISAD Championship Meet

AUGUSTA For the second time in three years, Seacoast’s girls’ cross country team has won their championship meet for small independent schools – MAISAD. Competing in Augusta on Nov. 4 were teams from Kent’s Hill, Hyde-Bath, Gould Academy, Hebron Academy, and SCS. For only the second time this season, top runners Anne McKee of Kent’s Hill and Seacoast’s Laken Kerrigan went head to head. Both times McKee was the victor, finishing a minute ahead of Kerrigan. The Seacoast team rallied behind Kerrigan to place five runners in the top 10, compared to Kent’s Hill’s three, helping them to bring the trophy back home. SCS girls won the meet with a score of 28, beating Kent’s Hill’s 32 points and Gould Academy’s 66 points. McKee place first with a time of 18:06, with Kerrigan second at 19:03. Also scoring for SCS were Kristin Wittner (21:22), Julia Lord (21:26), Ashley Esslinger (22:16), Kylene DeSmith (22:18), Shelby South (23:37), and Aryn Akerberg (25:44).

The Seacoast boys’ team also ran well in Augusta to complete their season. Gould Academy’s Henry Smithers strolled across the finish line at 16:00, with Isaac LaCroix in pursuit at 16:03 to place second. Gould won the meet with 42 points. It was a closely fought race between SCS and Hyde, with Hyde outscoring SCS 49 to 52. Caleb LaCroix finished 7th (17:01). Also scoring for SCS were Chad Downs (17:45), David Bujeaud (18:15), Fred Pilkington (18:25), Arik Akerberg (20:53), Asa Johnson (20:56), Tim Yeaton (24:40), and Logan Archer (24:45). Hebron Academy scored 100 points while Kent’s Hill finished with 117 points for the meet. A special note of thanks goes out to new coach Patty DeSmith and assistant Chaz Kerrigan for a job well done and for helping the athletes to have a great season. The entire girls’ team and all but two of the boys’ team plan to be back and even stronger for next season.

Shooting at No. 1, Luc Linemayr scored a 77, earning a threeway tie for overall winner of the tournament. At the No. 2 spot, Garrett MacDonald shot an 88. At No. 3, Sam Zimmerman shot a 96. Brennan Santaniello secured the fourth flight win shooting an 83. Alex Hopkins posted an 84, winning the fifth flight and earned the honor of longest drive. And at No. 6, Brian Horner shot a 99. The final score of the Berwick team was 428, while the second place Pingree shot a 437 and the third place Portsmouth Abbey shot 457. Berwick is proud to bring home its fifth season championship banner. In other EIL news, Luc Linemayr was voted Co-MVP with Alec Shelbourne of Pingree. Sam Zimmerman and Alex Hopkins were named to the All-League team, and Brennan Santaniello and Garrett MacDonald earned Honorable Mentions.

Southern Maine Teams Boast Solid Seasons By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer SO. YORK COUNTY Southern Maine athletic teams turned in some stellar season play during the fall of 2013. York High School’s field hockey team went through its season without a loss, allowing only a single goal. The Wildcats followed that with a Western Maine Class B title, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Nokomis of Newport. York ended the year with a 17-1 record. In football, the Wildcats reached the regional semifinal losing to its neighboring rival Marshwood of South Berwick. The Wildcats finished the year 7-3. After losing the first two games of the season, York reeled off seven straight wins, including a regular season win over Marshwood prior to the regional semifinal loss to those same Hawks. Marshwood defeated York 21-20 in in last year’s Western Maine Class B final. The Hawks meet unbeaten Kennebunk for this year’s regional crown Saturday. Other Marshwood teams playing in Western Maine Class A also had success. The school’s field hockey team and girls’ soccer team finished ranked fifth in the Class A final standings. The field hockey team finished at 13-4, losing in the regional semifinals to Scarborough. The soccer team ended the campaign with an 11-5 mark, losing to Scarborough in the quarter finals. Kennebunk’s football is playing for the regional Class B title and three other Rams teams qualified for post-season play.

The field hockey team finished at 8-5-1 in Class B, losing to Cape Elizabeth in the quarter finals. The boys’ soccer team posted a 6-5-3 mark, earning the ninth seed before losing to South Portland in the A preliminary round. The girls’ soccer team was 3-11-1 and ranked 11th, losing to Deering in the A preliminaries. Noble High School of Berwick’s boys’ soccer team posted a 12-3-1 record and was ranked second in the final standings, hosting a quarterfinal game. The Knights defeated Cheverus before falling to Portland in the regional semifinals. York High School’s soccer teams had at least two things in common; they both lost to Greely High School of Cumberland in the semifinals of the Western Maine Class B playoffs by 1-0 scores, and they both dropped regular season games to Greely by 3-0 scores. The boys finished the season with a 5-5-6 record, ranked third, while the girls were 6-7-3, ranked sixth. The Wells High School team finished its season with a 6-3 record in Western Maine Class C, advancing to the regional semifinals. In that game the Warriors fell to Spruce Mountain of Livermore Falls by a 29-20 score. Traip Academy of Kittery’s girls’ soccer team was seeded 11th in the Western Maine Class C playoffs with a 5-10 record. The Rangers fell to Maranacook High School of Readfield in the playoffs by a 2-1 count. In golf Marshwood finished 11th in Class A with York fifth and Wells ninth in Class B.
