Year 2 News Autumn Term 1 Ahoy there! Welcome back! We hope you have all had a wonderful summer! This half term our creative topic will be the history of pirates! In Literacy we will be looking at information texts and fact files. We will also be writing our own pirate adventure stories!
In Numeracy we will be learning the 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x tables. We will also explore number sequences and develop addition and subtraction strategies. In Science we will be exploring the use of everyday materials.
Monteney Primary School
P.E lessons will focus on developing fundamental sport skills such as throwing, catching and reaction skills. We will be learning Spanish as part of our whole school MFL curriculum.

In Art we will be designing our own pirate flags and swords.
Reminder’s… WATER: Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school with fresh water each day.
Creative Challenge! This half term, we would like every child to make a junk model pirate ship for their home learning.
You can use empty cereal boxes, kitchen rolls, empty plastic bottles, tin foil...the list is endless!
House points and special prizes will be given out at the end of the term. Good luck everyone!
READING BOOKS: Please encourage your child to change their reading book every morning and fill in their reading diary every evening.
Non Negotiable Targets This year we will be working towards targets called ‘non–negotiables’ that we would like every child to achieve by the end of Y2. Targets we will be particularly focusing on this term are stated below. Reading To read high frequency words independently. A list will be sent home in due course. Writing To consistently use capital letters and full stops/question marks accurately in sentences. To begin to use commas in lists. Maths To know all number pairs to 100 (e.g. 30 + 70 = 100). To know by heart 2x, 5x and 10x tables.
A new start to the year! Now that your child has started Y2, we would like your support to help them become independent Monteney learners. Please could you encourage your child to hang up their coats and bags on their own pegs. In the mornings, there will be a task on the board for them to complete independently. It would be helpful if you could prompt your child to find out what the activity is and get started. In Y2 we also encourage every child to get changed for PE on their own and to tie their own shoelaces. Please could you practice both of these activities at home with your child.
