QUENTIN TARANTINO Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. In January of 1992, first-time writerdirector Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) appeared at the Sundance Film Festival. The film garnered critical acclaim and the director became a legend immediately. Two years later, he followed up Dogs success with Pulp Fiction (1994) which premiered at the Cannes film festival, winning the coveted Palme D’Or Award. At the 1995 Academy Awards, it was nominated for the best picture, best director and best original screenplay. Tarantino and writing partner Roger Avary came away with the award only for best original screenplay. In 1995, Tarantino directed one fourth of the anthology Four Rooms (1995) with friends and fellow auteurs Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Allison Anders. The film opened December 25 in the United States to very weak reviews. Tarantino’s next film was From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), a vampire/crime story which he wrote and co-starred with George Clooney. The film did fairly well theatrically. — IMDb

BRIEF FOR DIRECTORS The reason I’ve chosen Tarantion because of KILL BILL and the first feeling of this movie to me was raw, like a piece of raw meat. Although the movie includes a bit comic style, the aesthetic of violence was another level, quite similar to PULP FICTION. His style was about violent, weird and sometimes funny. Even the visual language of his movies were sometimes not obvious, but as an audience I can understand those movies in a short time. Conceptually I think his movies are about the love of humanity, just like fighting for love and exposed the evil side of a human.
I used to ask myself if I’ve never involed with art and design, what subjects should I pick up and learn? My answers were psychology and philosophy. That’s why I’ve chosen David Finch. I kind of obsessed with schizophrenia/ multiple personality, and in the SE7EN I think it was more about human emotion and behavioral psychology. Also I felt intensed with the reasoning scenes of finding out the killer, it was a big compact of the movie.
The Coen Brothers’ movies are so complex to me, but because of the complex and illegible plots, I extended my imagination and keep watching the second or third time of the movie. In No Country for Old Men, a killer has been molded as a calm, leisurely person but struggling for his dignity in life. I can feel there’s an eager in his mind. The movie style of the Coen Brothers reminds me of Tarantino, also about the aesthetic of violence. Strong concept and story writen, combined with crime scenes and a bit drama, which makes me more into their films.
IMPRESSION OF THE FILMS KILL BILL vol.1: The Bride wakens from a four-year coma. The child she carried in her womb is gone. Now she must wreak vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her - a team she was once part of. KILL BILL vol.2: The Bride continues her quest of vengeance against her former boss and lover Bill, the reclusive bouncer Budd and the treacherous, one-eyed Elle.
When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city.
While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. Also looking for Moss is Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), an aging lawman who reflects on a changing world and a dark secret of his own, as he tries to find and protect Moss.
BEGINNING After I’ve discussed with my instructor, he encouraged me to go with Quentin Tarantino. So I chosed QT as my film festival director.
Tarantino was born on March 27, 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is an American filmmaker and actor. His films are characterized by nonlinear storylines, satirical subject matter, an aestheticization of violence, utilization of ensemble casts, references to pop culture, their soundtracks, and features of neo-noir film. His career began in the late 1980s, when he wrote and directed My Best Friend’s Birthday, the screenplay of which formed the basis for True Romance. In the early 1990s, he began his career as an independent filmmaker with the release of Reservoir Dogs in 1992; regarded as a classic and cult hit, it was called the “Greatest Independent Film of All Time” by Empire. Its popularity was boosted by his second film, Pulp Fiction (1994), a black comedy crime film that was a major success both among critics and audiences. Judged the greatest film from 1983–2008 by Entertainment Weekly, many critics and scholars have named it one of the most significant works of modern cinema. For his next effort, Tarantino paid homage to the blaxploitation films of the 1970s with Jackie Brown (1997), an adaptation of the novel Rum Punch. Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Kill Bill (2003-2004), Inglourious Basterds (2009), Django Unchained (2012), and The Hateful Eight (2015) had the thread to hold a film festival because these films were similarly fullfiled with the aestheticization of violence, and revealing humanity. Those violence scenes happened straightly, plots were compacted, the storylines always pulled back people’s memories of the plots he has been set up, and as always, these films talked too much. Most of Tarantino’s movies were connected because he likes hiding clues, mix the narrative structures, and violence or gun violence.
