F inding Great Beer Around T he Lakes Region

by Jim MacMillan Contributing Writer

When the mood strikes to venture out and find a new ‘watering hole’ one might consider making that journey to a tap room of really good craft-made beer. With that thought in mind, and maybe to expand that notion a bit, let’s try to cover the best places to locate great tasting beer in the Lakes Region (and a bit beyond). Of course, we must start at the D.A. Long Tavern hidden within the walls of Funspot on Rt. 3, Weirs Beach. The Tavern boasts of 8 glorious taps of treasured suds from all over the nation. These are not your macro beers (although you can always find at least one Budweiser product on tap per the owner), but beers known for their wonderful taste, bigness or just plain exciting flavor ideas. These taps rotate all the time so visiting them just once would be a beer crime. You can

A rotating selection of unique craft-made beers are on tap at the D. A. Long Tavern located inside the Funspot Family Entertainment Center, situated one mile north of the Weirs Beach sign on Rte 3. check what is available on www. facebook.com/DA-Long-Tavern403235269719408/timeline Just down the road a piece is Meredith, home of Case-n-Keg at 5 Mill Street. The sign outside their building says “Over 2000 Beers In Stock” which seems

to be an understatement. Just about any beer that can be sold in NH is in this place. They have a 20x22’ walk-in cooler which also makes them the largest amount of cold beer in the area. They have a great selection of fine wine as well. And if you are in Laconia,

there a Cas-n-Keg there too. If you are up for their frequent beer tastings, you can follow them at www.facebook.com/Case-n-Keg111618898944226/. Shortly, you will be able to ‘stick your feet in the sand with a drink in your hand’ at the reopening of Town Docks in downtown Meredith. This relaxed atmosphere lends itself to fun, food and cool refreshments including an impressive line-up of good tap beer offerings. Depending on your heading next, you can visit Shackett’s Brewery, which is right along Rt 104 in Bristol. They have 5 taps of deliciously fresh home-made brew in a bunch of different styles so you’ll never know which one you’ll come upon. The owner is also a teacher at a local school so he must be very busy! And growlers are available for take-aways. Keep up with their selections at www. facebook.com/ShackettsBrewingSee beer on 33

THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2015 2016

— OFF THE SHELF/SUMMER READING —

A S ummer V isit W ith T he Cousins

by Debby Montague Book Reviewer

“It is better to travel well than to arrive.” —Buddha Say you want to visit our cousins across the pond this summer. Good for you if you have your plane tickets and itinerary ready to go, but even if you don’t you can travel to the old country any time as long as you have a book handy. Here are four series set in Great Britain that will give you a delightful armchair trip complete with history, mystery, and locals with whom you might enjoy sharing a pint. Christopher Fowler’s Bryant & May Series – Start your visit in London with Arthur Bryant and John May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit. Bryant and May probably should have retired long ago, but we’re glad they haven’t. No one else could possibly solve the mystery of The Water Room or The Victoria Vanishes and then there’s those pesky Seventy-Seven Clocks. There’s plenty to do on a visit to London, but for some obscure history and some enticing mystery you can’t beat

Bryant and May for guides. Bryant and May will take you on a tour of centuries old pubs and some museums, too. You’ll see some seamier sides of London and you might like to take a walking tour along the Thames with Arthur Bryant. He may not be the most gracious tour guide you’ll ever have, but he will probably be the most memorable. Be careful you don’t trip on the dead bodies piling up or Crippen, staff cat. There are fourteen books, so far, in the Bryant and May series, enough to keep you trotting around London and its environs for most of the summer if you choose. Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway Series – If you decide to move outside of London for a look at another part of England, spend some time in Norfolk just a bit northeast of London. If you like visiting coastal areas Ruth Galloway’s stomping ground of King’s Lynn might be an interesting place to visit and for ancient jails that become cathedrals Norwich is worth the look. Ruth is a forensic archeologist and often called on to help the local police, particularly Detective Chief Inspector Harry Nelson, solve crimes involving old bones, See montague on 38

Photographing That Perfect Landscape/Nature Scene

Are you interested in digital photography or have recently purchased a digital camera and looking to improve your skills? Read on as I have some great tips for beginners. Diving into the world of digital photography can be rewarding in many ways, but it takes a lot of know how to get it all right. I’ve taken my experience as a landscape photographer to give you a better understanding of this art form. With the right technique and knowledge, you can take great pictures of beautiful landscapes that you are proud of.

thought to yourself how amazingly beautiful those images were. It may have been a colorful sunrise. A snow capped mountain at sunset. A giant wave crashing into the ocean shoreline. The milky way. The northern lights. The images you saw evoked something in your soul that spoke to you. The words you hear in your soul are “Wow, that’s beautiful, how did they do that! I wish I could take a picture like that!” You knew the second you felt those emotions that you had to give it a try. You thought to yourself taking and sharing photos looked like a lot of fun. It’s time to buy a camera and get to shooting pictures just like you saw!

The Wow Factor You’ve marveled at other photos you’ve seen. It might have been in a local business or in a gallery, or maybe you saw it on a website, or during the evening news. You

thing... The Lens, Battery, Memory card, Camera Strap, Camera Bag. They even talked you into a UV filter and a Tripod. Awesome! You are excited! It’s not everyday you hand over a thousand dollars for something that basically records an enormous amount of digital pixels on a memory card. It’s high tech! But these aren’t just any pixels being recorded... Just look at this thing! It looks like something you might see in a sci-fi movie that transforms into a robot. It fits like a glove in your hand. And look at all those buttons and dials. You just know it’s going to take awesome photos. The Photo Shoot It’s time. The day has finally come. You’ve planned it all out. Sunrise time and location. Weather looks good. You’re going to go take that perfect sunrise. You set the alarm for 4am. You scramble around for

your gear and grab a cup of coffee and a granola bar. You drive to the ocean to that perfect spot. There you find 20 other photographers parked right next to you. Everyone jumps out of their cars when first light appears. Five of the photographers have camera phones. Five have lenses on the camera that look more like a missile launcher. Five of the photographers look like they are on a safari. Three are literally in the ocean with waves crashing over them. And two look like they may have rappelled by rope to get down the cliff wall they are hanging from. Everyone is lined up, facing the colorful drama unfolding in the sky in front of you. The Photos You start snapping images. The sunrise is fantastic. It starts out blue-violet-pink, and when the sun gets closer to the horizon evSee clifford on 22

THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2016

This diver is being attacked by the invasive plant milfoil!

by David Packard

Invasion Of T he Waterbody Snatchers

NH Lakes Association

In 1956 the classic science fiction movie titled “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” came out. In it the hero played by Kevin McCarthy discovered that the people around him looked very much the same as they always had but they were gradually being taken over by alien plant invaders. Poor Kevin was helpless in alerting others and vainly attempting to defeat the invaders through his own efforts. He shouts in an emergency room that the plants are taking over the planet: “Doctor, will you tell these fools I’m not crazy? Make them listen to me before it’s too late.” If you haven’t yet heard the alert, New Hampshire’s waterbodies are also under attack from plant invaders: aquatic invasive plants! Invasive plants have found New Hampshire waterbodies very inviting with no natural predators to stop their spread. These plants were brought to our waterbodies from other places by people. The first aquatic plant infestation in New Hampshire

was discovered in Lake Winnipesaukee in 1965. Invasive plants continue to be transported and spread primarily by boaters who simply aren’t aware that they are carrying these terrible hitchhikers with them from waterbody to waterbody. Invasive plants grow and reproduce rapidly, taking over large portions of waterbodies and impairing boating, recreation, and aesthetics, threatening native plant species and fisheries, and causing habitat loss. The most common of the invaders are variable milfoil and Eurasian milfoil and they propagate primarily by fragmentation. Plant fragments can easily become entangled on boats, trailers, fishing equipment, and diving gear. Once transported from one waterbody to another, even the smallest fragment can grow roots and

settle into its new location. Invasive plants are not only found in lakes and ponds, but also in rivers and streams. Thirty years ago, 30 lakes in New Hampshire were infested with invasive plants. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services reports that the number of infested waterbodies has climbed to 82 lakes and 13 river systems. Rivers have been solidly clogged by milfoil plants that readily root in sediments in slow moving water. Milfoil grows readily where sunlight can penetrate shallow water allowing for up to an inch of growth per day. Growing as tall as 20 feet in waterbodies it infests, milfoil makes swimming and boating—even kayaking and canoeing—difficult and dangerous. Aquatic invasive species aren’t just plants. There are invasive

animals—including Asian clams and Chinese mystery snails— that are now being found in New Hampshire’s waters. The visual inspection of a boat or trailer is not effective in detecting invasive animals as these species typically hitchhike on boats, trailers, and gear in drops of water when they are in their microscopic larval and juvenile stages. Approximately 20 Asian clam larvae could fit on the head of a pin—it’s not likely you will spot them with the naked eye! The attempt to manage invasive plant and animal invaders is going on in many of the lakes and rivers where infestations have been discovered. The staggering cost of fighting back these invaders is being born by local lake and watershed associations, volunteers, towns, and the State. Our water resources are so very important to us that we are spending more than a million dollars each year to keep from losing the use and enjoyment of these waterbodies by residents and visitors. But the best method of attack is to prevent the spread at the sources. See lakes on 39

Kayak fishing is exploding in popularity. Anglers looking to get on the water without forking out the big bucks for a power boat have been taking to kayaks to pursue species such as large and smallmouth bass, salmon, lake trout, and just about any other species that swims. For the beginner, figuring out which kayak to buy, how to rig it, and how to fish from it can seem like a daunting task. About half of my kayak fishing clients each year are people who want to try kayak fishing before they purchase their own kayak. Luckily there are seminars, websites, professional anglers, and writers dedicated to enhancing the sport of kayak fishing and recruiting new kayak anglers. One of the biggest advantages of kayak fishing is that you can launch a kayak almost anywhere you can walk to the water. Once on the water you can paddle to areas out of reach of shore anglers, and a kayak’s shallow draft allows anglers to paddle into waters too shallow

Outdoor and fishing expert Tim Moore.

for boats. However, kayak fishing isn’t without challenges. You’ll need to get your kayak to and from the water. Fishing kayaks can weigh anywhere from 40 to 90 pounds, sometimes making them difficult to load on a vehicle, or get them from the vehicle to the water. If you plan to transport your kayak on top of your vehicle you may want to purchase a load assist rack to help you load your kayak onto your vehicle. Once you arrive at your fishing destination, a wheeled kayak cart will come in handy for getting your kayak to the water. Kayakers are required to carry a PFD and sound signal at all times, and an all-around white light and visual distress signaling device between sunset and sunrise. You are not required to wear a PFD, but it only works if you wear it. It’s also a good idea to file a float plan prior to heading out. Your float plan can be as simple as a note stating where you are fishing and what time you plan on returning. The most popular kayaks for See moore on 36

Buy Your Hike Safe Card and Get Set for the Summer Hiking Season

CONCORD - As the summer hiking season gets underway, the NH Fish and Game Department reminds outdoor enthusiasts to buy their Hike Safe card before they hit the trails. Voluntary Hike Safe cards are available from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Purchase the card online at www.nhfishandgame.com/HikeSafe. aspx to support Fish and Game search and rescue efforts and be exempt from liability for repaying search and rescue costs in New Hampshire (unless caused by reckless or intentional behavior). All funds raised through sale of Hike Safe cards go to Fish and Game’s Search and Rescue Fund. Hike Safe Cards may be purchased online at www. nhfishandgame.com/ HikeSafe.aspx, at Fish and Game headquarters in Concord, or by using

a print-and-mail application available at www. nhfishandgame.com/safe. The cards are $25 for an individual, or $35 for a family (parents and minor children), and are good through the end of the calendar year. Whatever outdoor activity you enjoy – hiking, biking, paddling, climbing or walking the local nature trails, the Hike Safe Card is your back-up plan for the great outdoors,” said Fish and Game Law Enforcement Colonel Kevin Jordan. “Buying a card is a great way to help support Fish and Game’s search and rescue activities.” Fish and Game conducts an average of about 180 search and rescue missions each year. Learn more about the Hike Safe Card and see Frequently Asked Questions about the card at www.wildnh.com/safe.

Blue sky, white puffy clouds, Mount Avalon and Mount Tom reflection on the placid waters of Saco Lake, Crawford Notch State Park. There are many great sights on short hikes.

S hort Hikes Are Fun Too!!

Lovely Gibbs Falls can be reached by a short hike, just 4/10ths of a mile The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center, up the Crawford Path. The Crawford Path was cut in 1819 by Able and his son Ethan Allen Crawford and is the oldest hiking trail in continuous use in the United States. by Amy Patenaude

Weirs Times Outdoor/Ski Columnist

At the top of Crawford Notch there is a little lake, Saco Lake, the headwaters of the Saco River. There is a delightful short trail around the lake that is less than half a mile long. The trail begins at the south end of the Saco Lake at the outlet dam and follows along the east shore until it meets Route 302 at the north end of the lake. Yes it is a short hike but it has a high fun factor. There are many log bridges and about half way around there is a sign that’s reads “AMC Idlewild (View)” at the foot of an impressive rustic stone stairway. The stairs lead upwards to the top of a two-tiered ledge with

the remains of an old iron railing presumably placed there to prevent anyone from going too near the ledge’s edge. I hiked around early in the morning and the lake’s placid waters reflected the splendid vista of Mount Avalon, Mount Tom and the blue sky. I made an attempt to skip a rock but it just made a splash. Even though I was not far from the road this place gave me a happy peaceful faraway feeling. After your hike I suggest visiting the Crawford Notch Train Depot, it’s right across from the lake, built by the Maine Central Railroad in 1891. The station is major stop for the Conway Scenic Railroad’s daily excursions. The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center is located just a little further north of

the train depot. The visitor center and lodge was built in 2007 and has a cafeteria and a small hiking gear store that is open to the public. I have always found the AMC’s staff helpful and willing to answer nearly any questions about the area. The famous Crawford Path begins right across from the Highland Center and ends on the summit of Mount Washington—the Crawford Path is the oldest hiking trail in continuous use in the United States. The Crawford Path from Mount Pierce north is part of the Appalachian Trail. There is a lot to discover in Crawford Notch State Park, water falls, the Elephant Head rock formation and many miles more hiking trails!

We’ve Got You Covered: Art From Motorboating Magazine Covers 1914-1935

The 2016 season at the New Hampshire Boat Museum will be filled with plenty of new and exciting exhibits and activities. Here are some of the highlights. The Museum will host a number of exhibits that explore the world of boating and life on New Hampshire’s many lakes. The featured exhibit, “We’ve Got You Covered: Art From MotorBoating Magazine Covers 1914-1935,” looks back at a time when magazine covers were true works of art. The exhibit is on loan from the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York. Before the advent of digital graphic design, many magazines commissioned artists to create paintings to be used on their magazine covers. Most people are familiar with Norman Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers. MotorBoating magazine also commissioned cover art-

Ice Boating” will look at the lure of ice boats. The exhibit will feature the Boat Museum’s newly restored 1920s ice boat, a vintage skate sail, along with historic photos, video footage, and other ice boating memorabilia. The third exhibit will be on “McDuff Motors: A Local Enterprise.” The exhibit features McDuff motors from the collection of Jeff Fay, as well as the New Hampshire Boat Museum. The exhibit will look at the development of the McDuff Motor Company in Lakeport during the early part of the 1900s. And, of course, the Museum will feature a wide range of glorious vintage boats on display from the Museum’s permanent collection as well as ones on loan from other collectors. One thing the New Hampshire Boat Museum is known for are educa-

ists. The artists’ paintings depicted what was then the latest motor boats driven by beautiful women and men. Today, these covers are not only visually appealing, but are historically interesting because they let us see boats from a bygone age. MotorBoating magazine was founded in 1907 by the Motor Boating Company, Inc. In 1909, the magazine was purchased by the famed newspaper magnate William Randolph Hurst. The magazine had a long history as the foremost publication for the boating industry. The exhibit will display 30 covers spanning 1914-1935. The exhibit also will include many copies of the original magazines from the Boat Museum’s collection. “We’ve Got You Covered” is just one of the Boat Museum’s attractions for this season. These high tech cameras and software have fooled us into thinking we can all take amazing photos. Digital cameras have altered how we take pictures. With enough memory card storage and battery, we can

literally take pictures all day long. The result can be a “spray & pray technique, with hundreds of photos recorded, and only one or two of them being “keepers. It has changed the way we take photos, without focusing on technical de-

tails we’ve also lost focus on subject matter. Film cameras were comparatively very limited, without the sensors or computing data available on todays equipment. Back then, if you knew what you were doing with a film camera and the

along with pretty darn good cameras. What’s The Point? So what’s the point of taking pictures with a big heavy and expensive camera when our phones can take great photos with the push of a few buttons? The big difference is camera phones are very limited with image resolution for enlarging photos, the settings are almost all completely automatic, and the focal length of the lens is very limited. While those features might seem unimportant when all we want is a picture of our baby smiling, they are paramount to the serious hobbyist or professional looking to make some art worth sharing. The Tips Read The Manual It’s pretty simple for this tip. With the extensive features, settings, buttons, dials, and menus on digital cameras & lenses, it may be overwhelming at first. If you are new to DSLR’s or the newer mirrorless cameras on the market, you must read the manual. There is no amount of tips I can See clifford on 27

History & Technolog y S ync Up For Updated NH Historical Highway Markers Map

As spring arrives and people begin planning trips around the Granite State, the N.H. Division of Historical Resources has released a new version of its popular online New Hampshire Historical Highway Markers map. Designed for both mobile and desktop use, the updated historical highway marker website features an overview map of the state that shows t h e l o c ations of each marker. Users can click on any marker to find out its subject and location, learn which number marker it is – there are currently 244 – and see a photo of it. The new website also divides the state into geographic regions; tabs at the top of the page bring users to maps of each region, with images of all markers located there. Clicking on any of the markers brings up a larger image of it. Driving directions using Google maps are also available, as are zoom and pan capabilities on the map itself. New Hampshire’s historical highway markers serve as signposts of the state’s history and the people who made it. Subjects range from Abenaki Native Americans to poets, painters and contemporary sports figures; from meeting houses to stone arch bridges and long-lost villages; and from factories and cemeteries to places where international history was made. The program began in 1958, when the first marker, “Republic of Indian Stream was installed in Pittsburg. The most recently installed marker, “Revolutionary War Drummer William

Diamond, is in Peterborough. “We hope the website will inspire people to go and visit the places where our history happened, said Elizabeth Muzzey, director of the N.H. Division of Historical Resources and state historic preservation officer. “The regional maps make it possible to create

a driving tour or to preview a planned trip. Any municipality, agency, organization or individual wishing to propose a historical highway marker to commemorate significant New Hampshire places, persons or events must submit a petition of support signed by at least 20 New Hampshire residents.

give you that will help you more than understanding all the functions of your new camera. I’ll tackle just a few of the most important subjects here. Shutter speed, Aperture, ISO, Focal Length, RAW mode, Shutter/Focus button are all the main features of the camera that you will need to master. The Three Pillars of photography are the first three mentioned (Shutter, Aperture, ISO). Shutter With landscape photos, you generally want sharp details and a wide focal length. You attain that by adjusting your settings so that the images are in focus, with sharp details. You’ll definitely need a tripod to steady the camera for best sharpness. When the shutter speed slows below about 1/30 of a second, no matter what camera, if you or the subject are moving the scene will blur. The tripod will help tremendously when the shutter speed slows. I like to go one step further and use mirror lock up when photographing landscapes. The mirror actuation can shake the camera when shutter speed falls below about 1/30 of a second. This affects image quality and sharpness. Another great tip that deals with camera shake is to ei-

robert allan clifford Photo

Aperture With lens aperture, a good rule of thumb for sharp details is to set it not too large (f/2.8) or too small (f/22). Camera lens “f-stops” (f stands for focal ratio) range, on average anywhere from f/1.2 all the way up to f/32. Adjusting these f-stop numbers on the lens will affect depth of field focus (focus detail and distance from the closest object in view to the farthest). Depending on the lens you are using, and the See clifford on 28

focal length the lens is set to, it will result in a specific range of sharpness and detail (depth of field). Between f/8-f/13, with a wide angle lens at a focal length between 10mm - 24mm will give you very sharp detail, as long as the camera is stable and the subject is in focus and stationary.

barely any loss of quality. A good standard for ISO setting, with regards to landscape photography, is anywhere from 100-3,200 ISO. The low end ISO is perfect for almost all natural light circumstances, and the high end ISO I mentioned would be good for photographing the milky way.

just like a camera phone, but not for landscape photography. RAW Mode RAW mode is a file storing setting on all DSLR’s. Just like shooting in Manual Mode, you will be shooting in RAW mode. Most DSLR’s are set to record image files in compressed JPEG format. These JPEG files are how almost all of the internet and any printers used are able to utilize the image file. The JPEG files are much smaller in file size and contain much less pixel detail than do RAW files. The main advantage of shooting in RAW mode is the ability to post-edit the photo, and render images that are of the highest quality. RAW files store an enormous amount of dynamic range of each image. Color can be edited, as well as white balance, exposure, and contrast. The only thing that cannot

be adjusted with a RAW file is the ISO, as that is different tier of file storage that is attached to the image file. The only drawback to shooting in RAW is you will need to convert the RAW files into a web & print friendly format like TIFF or JPEG files. DSLR cameras do come with software to edit and convert RAW files into JPEG, but we’ll get to that later. Subject Matter Like I said earlier, a landscape photographer has a desire and vision to create something beautiful. But what is that something? What are you going to photograph? A photograph needs subject matter, and ultimately should be able to tell a story or evoke emotion without any words. Words are certainly helpful if you are cataloging, but not necessary. You don’t normally hang a piece of art on a wall with a description unless you are selling it. The photo subject might be a sunrise at the ocean, or it might be of colorful light and sky casting onto a mountain. It might be a waterfall in the woods, or a foggy morning along the shoreline of a lake. As long as there is a clear vision of what you are photographing, and photographing it well composed, you are doing it right. Composition Framing and composition are the rules and order for capturing a photo that is pleasing to the eyes. Musicians compose music in a way that is pleasing to the ears and minds of their fans, and so must photographers do so with photos for the eyes. A well composed landscape photo puts the viewer inside the photo. You will feel like you are there, right next to the photographer. The rule of thirds, subject placement, 50/50 split image, vertical framing, horizontal framing, level horizon, and wide or zoomed framed scenes are all aspects of composition that when done right, naturally look good in whatever aspect ratio they are recorded in. The best tip for composing an image is to visualize what you want and then frame it in your view See clifford on 29

screen. You might need to crop or level the image to the horizon in editing, so get it as close to what you want as best you can. Most cameras now have built in grids and levelers to help with it. The scene should be well balanced with objects placed in the scene.

The main subject, if there is one, can be anywhere in the image, as long as it is pleasing to the eyes and somewhat placed into the rule of thirds. It doesn’t have to be exact. Some subjects look amazing centered, while others look much better off to one side of the scene. A lighthouse is a perfect ex-

The Light This is where a lot of planning comes into play. You have to have good light to make a good photograph. What does that mean? Light is how we can see the world in front of our eyes. To a camera, light is something that is exposing on the camera sensor and recording the waves of it. It’s really one of the most important as-

pects of photography. Light comes in many forms. Look around on a cloudy day... do you see a lot of harsh shadows? Do you see a lot of color? The answer is no, neither are really strong in dim, flat light. Compare that with a bright sunny day... lots of harsh shadows, and bright light, and lots of color. Sunny daylight is what creates a lot of contrast, and can work well if you are creating black & white images of landscapes. Arguably, the best light comes in the morning and evening, especially on a sun-filled day. The hours in the day right before or after sunset See clifford on 30

suited perfectly for landscape photography. It generally has to do with some type of weather condition like fog, mist, rain, or snow, but can also be attributed to capturing a type of light or a special emotional moment that you don’t see normally in everyday life. The light is always soft with these weather conditions. Things might almost look out of focus, or dull. Images with great atmosphere also look good in monochrome, as there is generally not a lot of color associated with foggy scenes. Accessories Photography can take you places you’ve never been to, and it can also take your wallet places it’s never been. There are many little accessories you may want to consider for your camera. L brackets are becoming popular, and allow you to keep your tank of a camera and lens level on top of the tripod when switching from horizontal to vertically framed photos. Polarizing filters, Neutral Density Filters, and Graduated Neutral Density Filters

are all used by professional landscape photographers. Polarizing filters are great for waterfalls and reducing reflections on water and pavement. Neutral Density Filters are great for slowing down your shutter speeds, to allow things like waves and clouds to streak and soften. Graduated Neutral Density Filters are perfect for landscape photos when the land is darker than the sky, balancing the two. Some of these filters require a front element of some sort to safely hold the filters. It can get pricey, but well worth it for creating beautifully dramatic landscape images. Editing I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to edit all my photos. There are other types of editing software out there, but these for most are the best. They are a necessary tool if you are serious about photography. Editing for me is really where I can make my images stand out. It is also absolutely necessary when shooting in RAW mode to adjust for certain See clifford on 31

tiple exposures blended together, while others are photo stacked to enhance depth of field detail. There is nothing wrong with this, and be what it may, if the resulting image is what you imagined and saw in your mind, by all means do it! Join A Community Another helpful tip includes joining a photo specific community. Join a social network website like Flickr or join a local photography club and enter their competitions. Flickr is an amazing online photography community, that also doubles as a free cloud storage for your images. Many professionals and hobbyists share photos daily there. It’s a great way to compare your work with others, as well as follow the work of photographers that you admire. Looking at others photos will most certainly help you improve in the long run. With clubs, there is no better way to quickly improve your skills as a photographer. The object

things like white balance, exposure, and contrast. RAW files tend to record a visually flat image. A good image doesn’t need much editing, but it is most definitely necessary to create a finished product. I once took a photo of an incredible sunrise over Lake Winnipesaukee. It was spectacular. The best I had ever witnessed. The clouds were absorbing much of the color and light from the sunrise, and reflecting it down onto the lake. It was beautiful. When I edited the image, I adjusted the white balance, as I shoot in auto white balance mode. The auto white balance warmed the image up a little too much, and adjusting it brought it back to what I felt I saw there. I adjusted the color to bring back some of the cooler blue light. Along with a little exposure adjustment, it was perfect after that. When I shared the image online, I received some harsh criticism from a fellow who had seen the same sunrise and was appalled that such “trickery” was used and that what

I called art was actually cheating. Do not be fooled or swayed by anyone that thinks you are cheating or faking landscape photos by editing them. Ansel Adams is the most widely known photographer in the world, and edited all of his images before printing. Many will also confuse and compare the editing of images you see on magazine covers with what a landscape photographer edits. They are not the same. In some drastic cases, a landscape photo might require mul-

Final Thoughts I’d like to point out that I absolutely love what I’m doing as a photographer. Photography for me is not only something I’m very

passionate about, but also a bit like therapy. I was born to do this. I have always enjoyed it since I was a kid. It’s really something I’m passionate about, and

something I find extremely rewarding. But I don’t take myself or my work so seriously that I feel like I need to compete or try to excel to be anywhere near the best in my field. I’m not in this to be famous. Fame has its price tags in life. I’m community oriented. I love the mountains, lake, and ocean. New Hampshire and New England fit perfectly into my passion for taking and making photos. It’s a great place to live and photograph the world. Some of my best and favorite images happened when I least expected it with little time or money invested. Other photos happened with a lot of planning and a lot of time

set aside. While the above information is a lot to absorb all at once, if you can take away one thing from it, find something you do and love in life like I have, and life will reward you with some amazing moments. fishing are sit-on-top (SOT) kayaks. SOT kayaks are generally more stable than sit-in kayaks. SOT kayaks are also self-bailing, so any water that gets inside the kayak simply runs out through scupper holes in the bottom of the kayak. A general rule of thumb when choosing a kayak is longer kayaks are faster, shorter kayaks are more maneuverable, and wider kayaks are more stable. I fish (and guide) in Old Town Predator kayaks because of their comfort, stability, and lifetime warranty. A paddle measuring at least 240cm will be good for most SOT kayaks. ak out and fish in it before they decide where to mount accessories. You may want a crate for tackle and gear storage, a fish finder, and many other optional accessories mounted on your kayak. What to mount and where is different depending on how you fish, what you fish for. Use rods 7’ long or less and you will have an easier time getting your catch close to the kayak for landing. Handle length is also important. Rods with long handles force you to hold your reel further away from your body. This will not only tire you out, but will become quite frustrating over time. A fish gripper is also a recommended tool. It will allow you to hold onto a fish or leave the fish in the water while you get your camera ready. Purchasing a new fishing

There are many resources, such as YouTube, kayak fishing forums, and kayak fishing groups on Facebook loaded with people who are willing to answer any questions you might have. lost treasures, and dead Nazis. Beware of Druids (yep, they still exist and some, like Ruth’s friend, Cathbad, are quite congenial) and the marshes. You could be lost forever if you lose your footing in those marshes. If Druids and an ancient henge aren’t enough Ruth can tell you about aboriginal remains, grave robbers, and Victorian murder-

esses. It will be an interesting visit, that’s for certain. Meet Ruth in The Crossing Places and keep up with her life and work in the seven books that follow. Archeology and English history can make for an exciting vacation. Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy Series – From Norwich go northwest across the Irish Sea to Belfast, Northern Ireland, a place

not all that welcoming to the tourist during The Troubles, but it’s all good now. Take a wander around Belfast and Carrickfergus and be happy that you aren’t checking your car for mercury bombs every morning or deciding your day’s itinerary by protests and barricades in the city. To forget history is to repeat it, however, and Sean will give you an interesting

guide to the Belfast that was. You’ll become familiar with the difficulties of being a Catholic in a Protestant police force and those of being a cop in city of paramilitaries. You’ll get to know the neighbors in Carrickfergus such as the lovely Mrs. Campbell. Sure, these aren’t the sort of books that Fodor’s might consider good guides to Northern Ireland, but the five books that make up the Sean Duffy series will give you some great reading and a good sense of the recent history of Northern Ireland. Ann Cleeves – The Shetland Series – The final destination of the cousins’ tour is far, far in the north of the United Kingdom. Go north past Inverness and past the Orkney Islands to the Shetland Islands in the North Sea. You should pack some warm socks but if you forget your sweater stop first at Fair Isle and buy a sweater of the same name. Birders love the islands but if you like a little mystery along with birdsong keep a look out for Jimmy Perez, a detective for the Shetlands. He’s a calm and quiet man, but he won’t stop searching for the truth

when troubles come. You can start the series with Raven Black the first book, or, like me, with White Nights which will give you the flavor of the islands in summer when the sun never sets and the long days leave you with a sense of unreality. There are four more books in the series all with suspense and surprises you won’t find if you only visit the islands for the birds and the sweaters. You’ll travel well with these four authors and their characters whether you set out for an authentic visit to the cousins or make the trip from the comfort of your Adirondack chair.

THE WEIRS TIMES BOATING & RECREATION GUIDE — Spring / Summer 2016 lakes from 11

Since 2002, the New Hampshire Lakes Association (NH LAKES) in cooperation with local lake associations and municipalities has operated the Lake Host Program to prevent the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species. Lake Hosts are spreading the word conducting courtesy boat inspections and teaching visiting boaters about aquatic invasive species prevention. Since 2002, Lake Hosts have conducted more than 761,000 courtesy boat inspections and have made more than 1,500 ‘saves’ of invasive plant or animal specimens that were about to enter or had just left a waterbody. Unfortunately, Lake Hosts only cover about 100 boat ramps in New Hampshire, and that coverage is strictly on a seasonal, part-time basis. There are nearly 200 high-use public access ramps in New Hampshire and more than 600 public access boat ramps overall. So, what do we do? How can we prevail against these invaders that are so well suited to take over our treasured waters? The only solution is for all of us to accept the personal challenge to stop the movement of aquatic invasive plants and animals on our boats, trailers, and gear. Whether traveling between New Hampshire waterbodies or to and from out-of-

state locations, boats, trailers, fishing tackle, and any other gear that has been used in any waterbody must be inspected and cleaned of any vegetation and other debris. You don’t need to recognize the differences between native and invasive plants. If it is green, remove it. The boat also needs to be fully drained upon leaving the waterbody. This “Clean & Drain practice, combined with drying the outside and inside of boats and gear, has proven to be effective in preventing plants and animals from spreading between waterbodies. The goal is to keep the invaders isolated. Don’t allow them to travel with you to your next point of recreation. At the end of the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers Kevin McCarthy had not stopped the invasion, but he finally got everyone’s attention to the problem. Now YOU know about the aquatic invasive species problem and that your boat, trailer, and gear always arriving at the next waterbody “Cleaned, Drained, and Dry is the solution. Please stop the spread of these invasives. They can’t get to the next waterbody if you don’t give them a ride! Jump into NH LAKES! If you live in or visit New Hampshire, chances are there’s a lake that you

love. The New Hampshire Lakes Association (NH LAKES), a member supported, nonprofit organization, is here to help individuals, groups, and businesses enjoy and protect all of the state’s 1,000 lakes from problems like invasive species and polluted runoff, and so much more. Jump in and join NH LAKES in helping keep our lakes health and safe for future generations. To learn more, visit www.nhlakes.org, email info@nhlakes.org, or call 603.226.0299.
