Corn Chowdah! A Winter Feast by Eric Gibson Contributing Writer

A fresh coat of snow and the mercury dipping ever lower are both testament to the fact that winter is here. With the cold my thoughts always turn to Chowdah. Not chowder, not “chow-dar”, it’s CHOWDAH! No self-respecting New Englander would ever call it anything but CHOWDAH! Corn Chowdah is one of my two favorite Chowdah’s, the other being Clam Chowdah. Along with thick stews, the occasional bisque, and soups packed full of veggies

in a hearty broth, chowdah is an essential part of the New England winter culinary landscape. Long about early November, when the weather starts to chill the nose, put some color on the cheeks, and the leaves are done falling to the ground, thoughts of winter menus begin to percolate in earnest. Holiday treats and feasts are given their due, but with the new year and no festivities to distract us, we can again slow down, breathe a deep sigh, and turn our thoughts toward large kettles filled with… Chowdah! How to Grow Mushrooms To The Editor: Do you know how to grow tasty mushrooms? It’s so easy. A conversation I had with a Staples employee days ago when I was the only customer in the store during the recent snowstorm provides valuable insight. “Sir, you’re not wearing a mask,” she said. “Do you know the purpose of a vaccine?” I respectfully replied. This young woman was wearing a standard paper mask that fit loosely around her beautiful face. “No. But I know lots of people here in town who have gotten COVID after getting vaccinated,” she honestly retorted. “Well, a great vaccine is like a warrior’s shield. It prevents you from getting sick. Do you happen to know the mortality rate of COVID? It’s only 1.6%,” I shared. I further went on to say, “Did you know that over 130 years ago Yellow Fever was killing many workers who built the Panama Canal? The mortality rate of Yellow Fever was a frightful 50%. There was no vaccine for this disease back then. Do you know how the doctors and nurses that treated those sick workers were able to do their work?” “No. I don’t even know what Yellow Fever is.” “Well, the doctors and nurses contracted Yellow Fever. Everyone in Panama was being bitten by the mosquitos that carried the disease. Anyone bitten got

Yellow Fever. The doctors and nurses survived. Mother Nature gives survivors of diseases the best immunity you can get.” I further said, “This past summer I contracted COVID. My doctor didn’t do anything to save me. My wife did. I don’t need to wear a mask nor get jabbed with the useless experimental biological agent because I have far better immunity than what’s in that syringe.” The young woman was flabbergasted. She was speechless. As I walked away from the cash register I added, “Oh, have you bothered to read the information on the mask box?” “No. I’ve not read it,” she replied. “Well, it might be a good idea. Almost all boxes have labeling that says the paper masks are not intended for medical use. Go look for yourself.” I turned around and walked out to the snow-covered parking lot muttering about sheeple. That, my fellow citizens, is how you grow plump, juicy, delicious mushrooms. You keep them in the dark and feed them manure. Tim Carter Meredith, NH

Two Important Bills To the Editor; Hearings for two important bills are coming up and need your attention! These bills affect EVERY town government and everyone’s taxes. 1) Repeal the Housing Appeals Board! (HB 1216) - HB 1216 will

be heard before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, 1/12/2022 at 2:30 PM in the Legislative Office Building. Email the committee to ask them to OTP: HouseJudiciaryCommittee@leg.state.nh.us Read the bill: https:// www.gencourt.state. nh.us/bill_Status/pdf. aspx?id=27643&q=billVersion The HAB is a state-level board comprised of 3 unelected, unaccountable, biased individuals who are allowed to defy ANY of your local boards’ decisions. This means your town meeting vote means nothing. 2) Stop commuter rail taxes (HB 1432) - Some people think NH needs the old bankrupt MBTA to come here. Most do not. Those north of Manchester will be paying sales, income and other taxes to support something they can’t use. Let’s stop the commuter rail boondoggle before it creates a tax burden that NH residents will carry for the rest of their lives. HB 1432 will have a public hearing on 01/13/2022 at 11:00 AM in the LOB 201-203 Read the bill: https://www.gencourt. state.nh.us/bill_Status/pdf. aspx?id=28328&q=billVersion Email the Public Works and Highways Committee and ask them to OTP (recommend) the bill pass: HousePublicWorksandHighways@leg.state.nh.us Save the NH Advantage! I skied all morning at Pats Peak in Henniker today. We were first in line at the chairlift and at 9am and we got the first chair-ride up. The people behind us had it just as good because there were plenty of choices for trails to ski. Pats Peak is 100 percent open, thanks to

We went to the Twister Trail first because they were setting up for a middle-school race. I knew once the course was set they’d close the trail to everyone but the racers. The snow was really nice packed powder. We then hit the FIS Race Trail, the

New England College Ski Team banner was up and the coach was setting up a practice slalom course on one side of the trail. We ended up lapping each of these trails twice while there was no one else on these slopes. We then yoyo-ed the ski area, up the lift and down a different trail See PATENAUDE on 22

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

It’s My Party I was contacted by the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records recently to inform me that I just might be included in their by Brendan Smith 2023 edition. Weirs Times Editor It seems that next election day will be my fourteenth consecutive attempt, if I decide to run again, for Governor of New Hampshire for the Flatlander Party and, if I don’t win, I will have officially broken the record for “Most Consecutive Futile Attempts At Running For A Public Office Without A Victory.” I have to admit I was a bit surprised. I certainly didn’t have this goal in mind when I first started on this journey in 1996. (Presently I am tied for the record with Harold Harrington of Ottumwa, Iowa, who ran for Register of Deeds thirteen times in a row with no success. Believe it or not, Hillary Clinton isn’t even in the top ten...yet.) This is certainly not something I am proud of, but if I can’t seem to make it to the big chair in the corner office of the State House next year, then I guess I will just have to be happy with my inclusion in this edition of Guinness. It’s not like I haven’t been trying, as I’m sure readers of this column can attest to. It’s just that certain protocols which are in place have made it virtually impossible for me to get elected. I can’t tell you how many people over the years have written to me or approached me at the deli counter at the local supermarket to tell me that they would like to vote for me for Governor as the Flatlander candidate. (Actually, I can, it has been nine times.) In fact, many, who are disillusioned with what’s been going on lately,

want to be registered members of the Flatlander Party and join the fight, but they can’t. It seems that here in New Hampshire, when you register to vote, you are only allowed to pick from one of three options: Republican, Democrat, or Undeclared. These folks that come and talk to me (usually when I am in a discussion with the deli clerk on exactly how thick I’d like my bologna) are a bit upset that they aren’t allowed to choose Flatlander Party, or any other choice besides those three for that matter, because it’s against the rules. One woman was particularly distraught, not just because her number in the deli line was “78” and they were only up to “52”, but also because she was told at the town offices where she lived that if she didn’t want to register for either Republican or Democrat, she would have to choose Undeclared. “So, I told the clerk, I AM DECLARED, I WANT TO REGISTER AS A MEMBER OF THE FLATLANDER PARTY!” she told me while looking around on the floor to see if she could find a discarded lower number thrown away by someone who just couldn’t wait any longer for a pound of low salt turkey breast. “I know, it is unfair,” I told her. “But you can still make a difference by writing in my name once you are in the voting booth. It’s spelled Brenda with an ‘n’ by the way.” My suggestion went unheeded as she did find that lower number and was now concerned with elbowing her way through the crowd.(Supply chain issues had affected the low salt turkey breast as well and she wasn’t going to be denied.) It is frustrating. People want to join with me on election day and be registered to vote as a Flatlander, but the powers that be have made the rules, and there are only three choices al-

lowed. It’s really a psychological thing. Once people are registered in one party or another, they feel an obligation to vote for whoever it is the leaders in that particular party made sure was on the ballot, even if it’s a dish rag, which is often the case. Not letting people feel like they are truly a member of the Flatlander Party by letting them register as one, gives them no reason to feel committed to whatever person happens to be running for governor under the Flatlander Ticket. In this case, me. Of course, people can register as undeclared, taking away the psychological factor, but once they are in the voting booth, all bets are off, no matter how many free doughnuts they ate at one of my rallies. They will most likely pick the Republican or Democrat anyway because they keep hearing (most likely from a registered Republican or Democrat) that voting for a third party candidate is a wasted vote, so they go ahead and choose which one they think isn’t as awful as the other one based on the thousands of negative TV ads they have watched over the last weeks before election day. So, things are looking good for me to be making the Guinness Book Of World Records for next year. Like I said, it isn’t something I’m proud of, I’d much rather be sitting in that big chair at the State House (and using that magnificent rest room), but until they change things up as far as letting people register for any party they want, I don’t feel it happening any time soon. Open Borders = Election Sabotage “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to wreck America’s election integrity.” Yes, my friends, it’s time to change the (in)famous phrase at the base of the Statue of Liberty. Open borders are not just a recipe for replacing native-born workers with cheap foreign labor and trading by Michelle Malkin assimilation for multicultural militancy. They’re about undermining the historic Syndicated Columnist nation through devalued citizenship and sabotage of the precious right to vote. Over the weekend, New York City’s Democrat mayor Eric Adams threw his support to a City Council-approved measure to allow an estimated 800,000 local noncitizens to participate in local elections. The newly minted voters would include green-card holders, temporary visa holders, including H-1B workers mostly from China and India, F-1/Optional Practical Training foreign university students with employment authorization, and potentially unknown masses of illegal alien so-called Dreamers. These new voters will be granted enormous influence over vital local matters pertaining to everything from education to taxes to crime and only need to show they’ve been in the city for a measly 30 days. It doesn’t matter that these noncitizens will largely have no attachment at all to America as their permanent home but instead see it as a temporary rest stop, a cash cow, or, at worst, hostile territory. Adams proclaimed in a statement that while he had “some concerns” about the bill, he now believes “allowing the legislation to be enacted is by far the best choice, and look forward to bringing millions more into the democratic process.” “Democratic process,” of course, is a euphemism for “Democrat Party.” The demographic overwhelming of our elections through both illegal alien amnesty and unfettered legal immigration is straight out of the left-wing playbook. What’s happening in the Big Apple is not new, nor is it a “conspiracy theory.” As I’ve long reported since my early days in newspaper journalism in Southern California, there’s been a steady erosion of voter integrity at the hands of open-borders politicians and operatives for decades. Since 1991, six municipalities in Montgomery County, Maryland, have allowed noncitizens (with no distinction between legal and illegal aliens) See MALKIN on 27

The Great Re-Sorting Is Here This week, the incoming New York City Mayor Eric Adams -the supposed rational corrective to uber-radical outgoing Mayor Bill de Blasio -- announced that he would allow legislation to proceed by Ben Shapiro allowing local voting Syndicated Columnist for 800,000 noncitizens. The same week, the legislature in California took up a bill that would establish single-payer health care in the state, paying for the increase in costs by essentially doubling taxes. Americans have been fleeing the most liberal states in mass numbers. Those numbers are about to increase even more. Between July 2020 and July 2021, approximately 352,198 residents of New York State embarked for warmer climes. Over that same period, the District of Columbia lost 2.9% of its population. California lost 367,299 people via net domestic migration. Illinois, another failing blue state, saw a net domestic outmigration of 122,460 people. Where did all these blue state refugees go? To red states, of course. Texas picked up 170,307 Americans migrating from other areas. Florida picked up 220,890 people. Arizona picked up 93,026. Idaho had the fastest annual population increase in the nation. The only region of the country to gain population was the South, which now holds 38.3% of the total population of the country -- and which picked up 657,682 Americans migrating from different areas. The Northeast is now the least populous region in the United States, and saw a net population decrease of 365,795 residents. All net increase in population in the West was due to births and international migration, not domestic moves. It’s not just individuals -- it’s companies. Facebook’s parent company, Meta,

just signed the largest-ever lease in downtown Austin for floors 34 through 66 of the tallest tower in the city. Elon Musk has relocated his company headquarters to Texas. My own Daily Wire relocated in 2020 from California to Nashville, Tennessee. In other words, red state governance is a magnet; blue state governance is a disaster. Yet blue states cannot change course. They cannot simply jettison their adherence to failed ideas like singlepayer health care or voting for illegal immigrants. To do so would be to acknowledge error. And so instead, they are banking on unearned moral superiority -- virtue signaling -- to fill the gap where good governance should be. Thus, red states are grandma-killing hellholes (where blue state legislators vacation); red states are brutal suppressors of voting rights (where Stacey Abrams wants to run for governor again); red states are filled with vicious dog-eat-dog trickledown capitalists (who must be taxed to pay for national spending programs). None of this is bound to convince Americans to vote Democrat. It’s not designed to do so. Democrats have banked on a consistent electoral strategy since former President Barack Obama’s 2012 victory -- the strategy of driving out a base comprised of minority voters and college-educated women. But that strategy is collapsing -- as Ruy Texiera, once the nation’s leading proponent of that strategy, admitted in November, “if Hispanic voting trends continue to move steadily against the Democrats, the pro-Democratic effect of nonwhite population growth will be blunted, if not cancelled out entirely, and that very influential Democratic theory of the case falls apart.” It’s falling apart in real time. But Democrats can’t pull out of the tailspin. They’re too invested in the lie that their programs are popular to notice how many Americans are calling up U-Haul.

Money for Indoctrination Glenn Youngkin recently was elected Virginia’s governor partly because he promised to ban teaching of CRT. CRT stands for critical race theby John Stossel ory, which argues Syndicated Columnist that every American institution upholds white supremacy. Before Youngkin’s surprise victory, the media mocked him for complaining about CRT. NBC’s Nicolle Wallace said it isn’t even taught in public schools. “That

is like us banning the ghosts!” she laughed. She is wrong. In my new video, journalist Asra Nomani reveals some rather creepy CRT lessons that are taught in many schools. Nomani filed Freedom of Information Act requests that forced school districts to reveal how they pay consultants to spread critical race theory. “We found 300-plus contracts,” says Nomani. “Every day, I’m getting a new contract. For them to deny it is just part of their campaign.” A CNN guest, history teacher Ke-

ziah Ridgeway, admits that CRT influences how some teachers teach. “That’s a good thing, right?” she says. “Because race and racism is literally the building blocks of this country.” Really? The building block? No! America does have a long, nasty history of racism. Some racism persists. But it’s not the “building block.” “They want to look at all of society through issues of race,” complains Nomani. That’s “propaganda that’s claiming our children.” “Claiming the children?” I push back. “That’s exaggeration.”

She pulled out some of the children’s books that are now part of the curriculum at some schools. “Woke Baby” teaches kids to be “a good revolutionary.” “A Is for Activist” reads like a union recruiting manual. “M is for ‘Megaphones Marching.’ ... Hooray! It Must be May Day!” “Not My Idea” calls “whiteness” a deal with the devil. It portrays a white person with a pointy tail and goat hooves and tells children that they sell their souls because “whiteness” gives them “stolen land” and “stolen riches.” The author, Anastasia HigginboSee STOSSEL on 29

Global Economic Growth Faces Pandemic And Inflationary Undertows The global economy is hardly out of the woods yet. The resurgent Corona virus pandemic, coupled with labor shortages and an inflationary by John J. Metzler surge not seen in Syndicated Columnist a generation, have served as an undertow to wider and sustainable economic growth. “The world is now two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, and the end is nowhere in sight. The human, economic and social toll of the pandemic has been devastating,” warns UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The UN’s annual World Economic Economic Situation and Prospects 2022 advises, “Global economic recovery hinges on a delicate balance amid new waves of COVID-19 infections, persistent labour market challenges, lingering supply-chain constraints and rising inflationary pressures.” The report highlights, “After a global contraction of 3.4 per cent in 2020 and following an expansion of 5.5 per cent in 2021, the highest rate of growth in more than four decades, the world economy is projected to grow by 4 per cent in 2022 and 3.5 per cent in 2023.” After the near predictable bounceback after the economic lockdowns and chaos of 2020, the “growth momentum slowed considerably by the

end of 2021 including in big economies like China, the European Union and the United States of America, as the effects of fiscal and monetary stimuli dissipated and major supplychain disruptions emerged.” “In the United States, robust growth in 2021, estimated at 5.5 per cent, is forecast to decelerate to 3.5 per cent in 2022,” the Report cautions and forecasts, “Recovery has largely depended on domestic demand; external demand has been weak.” Moreover, inflationary pressures, the largest in over forty years, are expected to persist well into 2022. Concerning China the Report underscores, “China’s economy expanded an estimated 7.8 per cent

in 2021, with growth projected to moderate to 5.2 per cent in 2022. Rapid recovery in the first half of 2021, driven by strong exports due to the reopening of developed countries and robust investment, has lost momentum.” Elsewhere in East Asia the robust regional growth of 6.7 percent in 2021 rebounded after only 1 percent growth in 2020; expansion is forecast to moderate to 4.9 per cent in 2022. Japan for example saw a negative growth rate of 4.6 percent in 2020, a tepid rebound of 2.2 percent in 2021, but is expected to grow 3.3 percent this year. South Korea’s See METZLER on 27

It’s been said that many who voted for Joe Biden were really voting against President Trump and I’m sure that’s correct. But now knowing the mess President Biden created on his own as Commander-in-Chief, such as on day one shutting down the Keystone Pipeline which sent chaos throughout the energy industry and drove gas prices to increase by 58%, (remember it was $1.90 per gallon on Oct. 30, 2020) along with major increases in heating oil and propane for both homeowners and businesses across New England. It didn’t stop there. In the first few weeks Biden undid most of Trump’s Executive Orders and by doing so dismantled many of President Trump’s accomplishments and a roaring “Trump Economy.” When Joe Biden became President our southern border was as secure as it has been in years and building of the wall was on a fast track to be completed with steel purchased and contractors

locked in to completing the wall. But our new Commander-in-Chief stopped all construction and sent the message that our southern border was wide open for all illegals if they can walk across it, and nearly two million did within the first year. We all know about Covid-19 and yes I’ve had both shots and recently received my booster and would encourage others to do the same, but I understand that decision should be a personal one. What should concern everyone is what the Biden Administration is doing; first they are trying to force everyone to get vaccinated, and if you don’t in some cases you will be fired from your job, such as a nurse, doctor, first responder or military members to name a few. However, back on the southern border where 2 million illegals are pouring through, as they enter, none of them are being checked for Covid-19 or any other diseases, which they are bringing with them. Today, you can’t get on a plane without wearing a mask or in some states go to a restaurant without proving you have been vaccinated first, yet Biden is OK with illegals coming into the US without any testing at all and then loading them on buses or planes and shipping them into your state in the middle of night without first telling the state governors. I remember Joe Biden

taking the Presidential Oath a year ago with his hand on the Bible swearing to uphold the U.S. Constitution and to protect the safety of all American citizens. I believe that President Biden has failed us once again. I don’t think any American can forget the unmistakable mess President Biden created with his disastrous withdrawal of Afghanistan; 13 dead soldiers and Americans left behind, along with leaving billions of dollars worth of our military equipment for the Taliban terrorists and giving up the valuable strategic Kabul Air Base. My guess is that many who voted for Joe Biden now see the results of his failed decisions and how they have crippled our economy along with putting our national security in jeopardy would gladly change their vote, if they could! We need to remember, elections have consequences and the average hard-working Americans are seeing and feeling it every day and it’s going to get worse before getting better. “The Biden Inflation” today is at a 40 year high at 7% and climbing. It impacts us with everyday expenses, when we fill up our tank to get to work, purchase groceries, pay for a delivery of heating oil or propane to heat our home, or think about purchasing a new or even a used vehicles or the increase

in our rent, all due to Biden’s decisions this past year. Former Defense Secretary Roberts Gates, who worked in the Obama administration said it best in his recent book: “Joe Biden has been wrong on every major decision in the last 4 decades.” Secretary Gates analysis is right-on and if you question that quote just look at any major decision President Biden has made in the last 12 months such as: 1. Cancelling the Keystone pipeline. 2. Cancelling building the wall on our southern border. 3. Allowing nearly 2 million illegals to cross the border this year. 4. Encouraging de-funding the Police. 5. Failed Supply Chain. 6. Failed withdrawal in Afghanistan. 7. Worst inflation in over 40 years. 8. Out of control crime. 9. Misinformation and lack of leadership on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The Progressive, Socialist agenda President Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders are pushing will destroy this great nation and our children and grandchildren’s future. November 2022 elections can’t come fast enough in order to turn the direction of this Great Country back to our Founding Fathers who so wisely laid out the best path for us years ago which has stood the test of time and is the envy of all. Gray Matters: Driving The Point Home

by Leslie Gray, LCMHC

Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness

I like those bumper stickers that ask, “How’s my driving?” followed by a phone number and vehicle ID so others have a place to call to answer the question. I rarely if ever see anyone driving one of these marked vehicles in a manner that is questionable. In my experience, they are typically driving safely and courteously. So, what if we all had these on our vehicles? Some way to identify us and give others a chance to report our unruly driving behavior. The truth is, we do. It’s called a license plate. And the phone number to call is 911. I’ve certainly had to make my fair share of 911 calls to report road rage or erratic driving of others. In one instance, I was nearly side swiped on 93 by another vehicle. The driver was completely out of control traveling at speeds well over 100MPH endangering everyone around him. I looked ahead and saw that traffic was at a standstill. While I was on the phone with 911, he slammed into the stopped traffic, flip-

ping his own vehicle over end for end several times. Remarkably, he stepped out of the vehicle looking stupefied (I’m biting my tongue here). I, on the other hand, was a wreck having witnessed this ‘accident’ while on the phone with the only people that stood a chance of helping (other than the guy driving that vehicle). I checked in with the victims and astonishingly, they were without serious injury. That’s not to say they were unaffected. Their vehicle was destroyed and were traveling quite a distance from home making the last leg of their trip stressful and challenging. But they felt lucky to be alive. This was no accident. As a matter of fact, I dare say most aren’t. An accident is something that occurs without the plan, intent, or desire to do so. It is unintentional and unexpected. Negligent driving is purposeful. As is road rage and driving under the influence. This is a choice, not a mistake. So, what’s happening? I’m not the only one who’s noticing the increased dangers of the roadways and certainly not the only one demanding a solution. One major issue is the speed of life. Many people are simply moving too fast, trying to do too much. You are, maybe as usual, running late. You push and shove your way through traffic, speed-

ing through a congested neighborhood. Blow through stop signs and red lights. Somebody pulls out of a side street, and you catch up with them so quickly you have to brake to avoid hitting them. You blow your horn, flail your arms, yell and scream, blaming them for cutting you off. But did they actually cut you off? Enter scene: common sense. If you hadn’t been speeding, they would’ve had plenty of time to pull out. You likely would not have been affected in the least by their actions. Hence one of the reasons speed limits exist; to ensure reasonable, safe access to and from roadways. Another major issue contributing to this are the technological advancements in today’s vehicles. They can accelerate quickly and stop on a dime. They handle corners like a race car. The trouble is that the drivers are no Mario Andretti and simply do not possess the driving skills to be traveling at such speeds. Check out all the news stories about drivers plowing into houses, businesses, and… bodies of water. (When did this become a thing?) And the technology onboard, be it your cell phone or the vehicles own console. We are no longer monotasking while behind the wheel, focusing on just driving. In many instances I dare say some are doing everything but. Sadly, the world of technology and social

distancing have contributed to a lack of social norms in terms of being thoughtful, cautious of one another (and even ourselves), displaying common courtesy and manners, and so on. In a word? Many have become uncivilized. Maybe there is a newborn in that vehicle you are tailgating on their way home for the very first time. It’s one of the scariest drives for new parents. Please don’t make it worse for them. And as we age, we need a little more time to think things through and make decisions, so it makes complete sense that older drivers are going to drive a little slower. Give them space. That may be someone’s grandma or grandpa behind that wheel. Please, show some re-

To Your Good Health Wearing gloves and a mask while cleaning litter boxes will not help. Why? What do the cats have that can hurt someone going through chemotherapy? -- S.C.

Meredith Whole Living Center is proud to partner with Kendra Burrows of Teach Peace Yoga in our new studio space!

You can find Kendra on our schedule at meredithwholeliving.com/yoga

by Dr. Keith Roach M.D. Syndicated Columnist

DEAR DR. ROACH: My neighbor is battling cancer for the third time. The medical personnel she sees when she goes for her chemotherapy treatments are urging her to get rid of her two cats. They claim the cats are a danger to her health.

Hearing Loss Leads to Lost Cognitive Function

Austin wants to tell you about a very important finding in medical research. Any decline in hearing results in declines in cognitive performance and brain function. Audiology Specialists provides cognitive screening that can measure some aspects of cognitive performance. This is an in-office, computerized screening. This is not an IQ test or list of questions. It is a simple, automated assessment that takes about ten minutes to complete. The results of this screening are not affected by hearing loss. The results help your audiologist determine which hearing aid is most appropriate and ensures your hearing solutions are right for you. The screening can be repeated at any time in the future to identify changes in cognitive performance. Please call for more information or to schedule an appointment at 603-528-7700.

ANSWER: Cancer chemotherapy frequently causes damage to the body’s immune system. Many types of chemotherapy work against fast-growing cells, and while cancer cells are fast-growing, your neighbor’s healthy immune system cells, especially white blood cells, are also fastgrowing and can be damaged by the chemotherapy. Avoiding potentially infectious agents is therefore wise advice for people going through chemo. There are several potential infections that can be transmitted from cats to humans. The one we worry about most is probably toxoplasmosis, a protozoan infection. Toxoplasmosis is a big concern in people with HIV, but also can be an issue in people who have recurrent chemotherapy or have a more prolonged reduction in immune system function. However, toxoplasmosis can be effectively avoided by wearing gloves while changing the litter box, keeping the cats indoors and feeding them only highquality cat food and never raw meat. Cat bites or scratches can be very serious, especially to someone with an immune system that is less than

perfect. If her cats occasionally bite or scratch, that would be a problem. There are a few other uncommon zoonotic diseases (ones that can be transmitted from animals to humans) that might be of concern. Her cats’ veterinarian would be a useful resource to find out more. The cats should, of course, be thoroughly evaluated. Allergies, not infection, might be the issue, but allergies are usually less of a problem during chemotherapy. The risks from a healthy indoor cat are very small. Risks must always be balanced against the very strong feelings people have for their pets, especially at a vulnerable time. I would not recommend separating a person from her cats without very good reason, and would want to know exactly why, since it’s not clear to me in this case. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old man with Type 2 diabetes. I have been told that I have a heart “prebeat” but that I should not worry unless it becomes random and misses beats. I do not have atrial fibrillation and have passed several stress tests. I can feel a rapid heart rate, especially at night. I can usually stop it by heaving my chest. Am I at risk for a serious event? -- R.G.B.

ANSWER: Premature heart contractions can come from either the top chambers of the heart (premature atrial contractions) or the bottom (premature ventricular contractions). Both are common, but neither is usually the sign of serious heart disease. The fact that you have found a way to stop them suggests to me that you are more likely having premature atrial contractions, which can come in runs of multiple beats (runs of premature ventricular contractions is called ventricular tachycardia and is very serious). Evaluation of this common concern often includes a long-term electrical study of the heart, such as wearing a Holter monitor, a 24hour recording of every heartbeat. If that has not been done, and you remain concerned, it might be reasonable to ask your doctor about obtaining one. If you have had one, and it showed nothing serious, then you are at no increased risk above the not-insignificant risk of an 80-year-old man with diabetes. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Yoga: More Than Movement

& Healthy New Year!

by Kendra Burrows

Owner Of Teach Peace Yoga

While many people are familiar with its poses, yoga is more than just movementit’s a routine for overall mind & body health. Breaking down the preconceived notion of yoga is a passion of mine so that others can improve their lives through the many mental and physical benefits of its practice. Just 15 minutes of yoga a day can regulate blood flow, lower stress levels, and regulate the nervous and endocrine systems. Over time, yoga can decrease anxiety and depression symptoms, increase strength and flexibility, and improve mental awareness. A simple yoga routine was the game changer I needed, and you can begin benefiting by following the 15 minute, beginner-friendly routine below, which can be done from home. As always, please consult your doctor if you have any questions about your ability to begin this sequence safely, and reach out to a trusted yoga professional if you have any questions about the sequence.

New Year!

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 20, 2022 —

15 MINUTE YOGA ROUTINE: -Begin by sitting in a comfortable position with your eyes closed, taking a few breaths in and out. Focus on the rise and fall of your chest, and the in and out motion of your breath. Visualize a positive intention for your day. -Return to the present moment, taking a few deep breaths. Once you feel grounded and present in your body, come to a standing position. -Begin rotating your ankles, then knees, each individual hip, followed by both hips at once. Move to your shoulders, creating circles in the air with your arms, forward then back. Then slowly rotate your elbows, wrists and fingers. -Moving to your neck, stand with a long spine, raising

your chest in and gently dropping your chin without strain. Rotating towards the right, stopping anywhere that needs a little attention or extra breath. Breathe into any resistance and visualize tension melting away. -Release tension in your jaw and face, and return your chin to a neutral position. -Inhale your arms up over your head until your palms are together, then gently lean to the left, return back to center, and lean to the right before returning to center again, making sure to breath. -Reaching arms overhead, bend slightly at the knees and come into a forward fold. Lower your head, send your hips to the sky, and breathe. -Inhale, and return to a standing position -Finding a comfortable place on the floor, move to a table top po-

sition. Inhaling, drop your belly to the floor and look up. Exhaling, arch your back to the ceiling while dropping your head. Repeat for several breaths. -Returning to a flat back, tuck your toes, lift your hips and straighten your legs, coming into downward facing dog. -Pedal your heels, breathing into the back side of your body before returning to downward facing dog. -Slowly walk your hands to meet your feet to transition to a comfortable seated position. -Inhale your arms high, twist to your right, and exhale, grounding your back hand into the ground and keeping a tall spine

as you breathe into this seated twist. -Inhale your arms back up to center, and exhale as you repeat on your left side. -Returning to center, walk those hands in front of you until you find your edge, and breathe. -Return to a seated position, inhale your

arms up over head, and with palms pressed together drop them down in front of your heart. Pause here, visualizing your initial intention. -Breath, thanking yourself and your body for being present today. This routine can be altered to fit your daily needs.

Antonio Brown – Quit Or Fired? by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

So liberal sportswriter Sally Jenkins of the liberal Washington Post thinks NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is a victim. Brown (formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers) ripped off his uniform and walked out on his latest team (Bucs) during Tampa Bay’s game with the Jets on Jan. 2. Wrote Jenkins: “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted to own Antonio Brown’s talent but not his problems. There is something disquieting about that…It’s an ugly institutional look: The Bucs used Brown’s body, only to fire him for his troubled mind… The Bucs knew they were dealing with a vola-

Antonio Brown. tile character and used him, calculatedly. They wanted to get what they could from him. And they had the right to walk away when they were discontented. He didn’t … The Bucs knew Brown could be irrational, and they signed him anyway.” After Brown ripped off his pads and departed the TB sideline bare-chested, Buc head coach Bruce Arians said “He’s no longer a Buc. End of story.” That doesn’t seem to be unreasonable after an employee walks off the job. But more from Jenkins: “In no other profession do employers demand such devotion and repay it with so little loyalty and deem people so disposable.” Really? I can think of plenty of other professions that treat their people worse than the NFL treats its multimillionaires. Jenkins: “The Buccaneers should tell Brown he is welcome back.” Seriously? Truth be told the Buccaneers took a big chance on Brown af-

ter his long history of volatility that got him bounced from three previous teams. Besides disrupting team chemistries, he was also accused of very serious sexual misconduct, refusal to pay creditors, counterfeiting vaccine cards, and much more. Did Brown have a difficult upbringing? Sure. Should that excuse his behavior? No. You see, personal responsibility is an anathema to the likes of Jenkins, et al. Egregious behavior must be excused, tolerated, and enabled. “It’s not their fault.” “They came from a bad neighborhoods.” “They have emotional problems.” Brown may well indeed have emotional issues. Who does not, to some degree? Neither Jenkins nor I have access to Brown’s medical records. But sometimes people just choose to do bad things. And when they do, they should not be shielded from consequences because they’re rich, famous, or a member of a “protected” group of some sort. Sometimes people just

choose to do bad things. Or dumb things. I wonder if Jenkins had similar sympathetic feelings towards Las Vegas Raider coach Jon Gruden when he was forced to resign in October due to an unsavory email he’d sent when working for the Washington Redskins eight years ago. If it weren’t for double standards the Washington Post would have no standards at all. Sports Quiz Where did Antonio Brown go to college? (Answer follows) Born Today That is to say, sports standouts born on January 20 include the great MLB shortstop Ozzie Guillen (1964) and basketball star Jalen Rose (1973). Sports Quote “I never had any quads when I played.” MLB Manager Dick Williams on Spike Owen’s injured quads Sports Quiz Answer Central Michigan University State Representative Mike Moffett was a Sports Management Professor for Plymouth State University and NHTI-Concord. It all happened in January of the year 1914 as reported by the Concord Evening Monitor. Pie eating contests are still popular in the 2020’s, but the prize for the winner of such a contest in a Rochester restaurant early in the year of 1914 would not likely be offered in 2022. The prize was a brier pipe. Tenney Brothers spelled the pipe as a briar one which they priced for sale at costs ranging from 25 cents to 5 dollars. Meerschaum pipes cost from five to eight dollars, calabash from 50 cents to 8 dollars, or a corncob pipe could be purchased for between one cent and ten cents. Popular brand tobacco for the same pipes could be purchased in ½ or 1 pound glass, aluminum, or brass humidors from 45 cents to $1.50. It was probably 30 years later when I watched my Dad on occasion mixing tobacco in a small wooden container (humidor) for

The weather of January 1914 appeared to be ordinary with a low reading in Concord on the 14th of the month being the same as I read on a thermometer this morning, that being zero, though the current trend is obviously of winters now that are warmer than 100 or so years ago. One only need read the advertisements of the past to note the changes and the things that haven’t changed. Things were transition-

zations has accommodated at least 58 different variations of sexes declared by their customers. This technically isn’t a drift but a radical departure at breakneck speed. Examine what I said to humanity in my word, the Bible, and you will see that sexuality is to be confined to male & female and to the biological sex you were born with (Genesis 1:26-31). My Son, Jesus, affirmed this when He visited your planet to become your Savior (Matthew 19:4). I have never changed my design and you do so at your own peril. I created both male and female and every cell in each is unique to each. This uniqueness, found in your DNA of each cell, was my design to enable reproduction, establish a complementary relationship that together would complete one another’s differences and manifest a powerful, combined impact on my creation for good, particularly through the families you would build as a by-product of your love and unity. You have no idea how vital my design is for success, and prosperity for individuals, couples, families and all of humanity. Thinking yourself wise, you have become fools (Romans 1:22). Look at history and you will see that wherever my order was replaced with yours, death, not life, ensued. You have become blind to the fact that you are not God, I am.

I am still on my throne and will one day call all to account, for your obedience to my design and will for sexuality, as well as every other behavior and practice established in my word. You may think that the absence of immediate judgement on my part is evidence that I have conceded to your newfound status as “god,” enabling you to exalt your definitions and practices with impunity. This is a tragic mistake. If you had been submissive to me and honored my word and will, as generations before you did, you would have become wise to the fact that my silence is not an indication of submission to you, but rather my patience to give you time to change and return to me and my will before judgement follows. Paul, my apostle made this clear when he wrote, “or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?” (Romans 2:4). When you stand before me, the standard will be perfection. That is, never having practiced one thing that was contrary to my will. You see, since I am without sin, even one sin is a capital crime against me, a Holy God. I can’t have relationship with anyone who has even one sin, or act of disobedience to me and my will (Matthew 5:48). It isn’t just the “radi-

QUESTION: Can We Be Any Sex We Desire? Your country has been in existence for over 250 years and never, to this point, seriously considered this question. It reflects a current drift that may be imperceptible to you but is profound. The drift that is leading you to desire whatever sex you want, is actually a result of a drift away from me and my will. Until recently, when the majority of your population recognized me as God, most, simply assumed that male and female was determined by me, even before birth. But now I have been relegated, for the most part, to being perceived as an old and useless relic of the past. In view of this “belief,” whatever I established is now considered passé and even repressive and has been replaced with the values of the new “god,” YOU, so that the new standard is, “every person desires, pursues and sanctions what they want.” (Judges 21:25). This drift has opened the door to what is being perceived as the freedom to determine what sex one can be and includes a myriad number of variations. I see that one of your social media organi-

cal departure” on this issue of sexuality but on every other standard I gave in my word, that you will need to declare complete innocence, when you stand before me. Impossible, you say! Yes. You are already imperfect and what you are doing on this issue alone will keep you from eternal life with me. You will spend eternity with the Devil, the one who deceived you into thinking you are “god,” as he once did with Adam & Eve, and hell will be your future forever. Since I am God and you are not, you will stand before me one day. When you do, you will be judged with my standard, not yours. If you would live, now and for eternity, forsake your wisdom and passionately pursue my will. Ask my Son to be your Savior and my Spirit to empower you to live according to my will, not yours. If you do, I will bless you with the fullness of life now and when you stand before me, and you will, I will welcome you to eternal life in my presence. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

BIRDS For The

BRENDAN SMITH’S NEW BOOK!

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Ducks In Winter by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

There are always two ways to look at something. I don’t remember what it was advertising, but I recall an old television commercial whereby one guy says: “Camping? I hate camping. There’s nobody around.” The next guy on camera, within the same friend group of the first guy but unaware of what he said, says: “Camping? I love camping. And there’s nobody around.” I guess it all depends on your personal preferences and motives. I thought of this the other day when I drove by a pond and saw people ice-skating on it. I was happy for those people as they got to enjoy a fun winter hobby, but I couldn’t help but think that I would much rather see the pond unfrozen and providing a place for ducks to rest. As I have mentioned several times before, ducks are my favorite type of bird to watch and a frozen pond, lake or river isn’t going to have any ducks. To make matters worse, even if the water thaws, the ducks that were previously seen there have likely moved well south only to return in the spring. No offense to the skaters, hockey players, cross country skiers,

Common loon on Long Island Sound in winter. snowmobilers, and ice anglers, but give me an unfrozen pond any day. I get it. This is New England and those frozen activities are part of the culture and history of the region. I understand that and am happy people get to enjoy their hobbies. It just makes me think of that commercial and how people can see things differently. There is a solution, however, for people like me who want to see ducks in the winter. It takes a little more effort, but it is well worth it. Simply head to the ocean or Long Island Sound, which remain unfrozen throughout our New England winter. For the most part, the ducks will be a little different from the ones we saw on fresh water before the freeze. Wood ducks, ring-necked ducks, and common mergansers are not likely to be found on the

ocean or sound, for instance. Replacing those ducks will be species such as eiders, scoters, scaup, long-tailed ducks, and red-breasted mergansers. Common and redthroated loons are also likely to be found but will be in their drab winter plumage. Bufflehead and goldeneye are a few species that may be found in both habitats. Hooded mergansers, one of the more common ducks found on fresh water before the freeze, are not likely to be found far from shore on the ocean or sound but can be spotted if smaller bodies of water remain open nearby. Brackish tributary rivers or marshes are good places to find hoodies this time of year. Of course, any open fresh water found in the winter, while other waters are frozen, has the potential to be a gold See BOSAK on 29

FEAST from 1 Did you know, according to sources, chowdah (chowder, technically speaking) was first referenced in cook books as late as the 1880’s. I would have thought earlier, but then again Wiki-whatchamacallit seems to be the ac-

cepted reference, even though most of us have recipe cards dating back decades before the inventor of the Wiki-world ever existed. Say nothing of the web site itself. I’m sure recipes for chowdah go back further, the compilation of ingredients in one

set aside on a plated paper towel. - Drain off bacon fat, leaving two teaspoons of fat in the skillet. - Sauté diced onion and diced celery in bacon fat. Cook until onions are just beginning to brown. Turn off heat and set the skillet to the side. - Drain potatoes, reserving about a cup or so of the potato water. - Into the kettle with potatoes and potato water, add the cooked bacon, onion, and celery. - Add to kettle the cream corn, regular can corn (and its liquid), the frozen corn, and stir. - Add to the kettle the Evaporated milk, regular milk, and cream, and stir. - Bring the kettle contents to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and let simmer for about 30 minutes. - Add ½ stick of butter and the seasonings (Salt, Black Pepper, White Pepper, Old Bay, Dill Weed, Nutmeg) and continue to simmer for 30 minutes and taste for seasoning. You may want less seasoning at first and add more as you go, finishing to your desired taste. - Simmer for 30 minutes more and add the other ½ stick of butter just before ready to serve, allowing it to melt.

And the recipes differ greatly from region to region, town to town, even person to person. About the only thing people can agree on is that corn goes into Corn Chowdah, beyond that it becomes an individual peculiarity of the epicurean as to what goes and what doesn’t. But, you say, you don’t have all day to babysit a pot full of Chowdah? No need to worry, here is a recipe good enough for company, that will only take about two hours from start to finish and taste just as good as though you were cooking all day. WEIRS TIMES’ BEER FINDER

Great Food, Libations & Good Times!

FEAST from 20 I wanted something hot, filling, but not too heavy. We were planning a visit by the fire pit outside after dinner, so whatever was made needed to offer some warmth and staying power. After looking about the pantry, the fridge, and the freezer, taking stock of what was on hand, I decided on Corn Chowdah. With its basic ingredients that come together nicely, this Corn Chowdah is a compromise between

thick and creamy and thin and brothy, but sacrifices none of its deliciousness. When paired with a quick bread, such as Beer Bread or Corn Bread, it is truly a Simple Feast! Front cover photo by Eric Gibson.

NH merchants were helping with the outdoor activities with the sale of overcoats and other winter attire and equipment such as sweaters and knit caps, skis, snowshoes, toboggans, and skates. A nearly new driving sleigh was said to be for sale cheap, as was a two-seat pung, a onehorse driving sleigh with top (Concord wagon), and a two horse three beam traverse sled in first class condition was also waiting for a buyer. In Dublin, NH, skaters were having January fun on especially clear and transparent ice. It was so clear that the skaters could see fish and even the pebbles lying on the bottom of the lake. In an inside winter activity, two civil war veterans in Marlow played a total of 254 games of checkers. Joseph Lowell won 87 games and See SMITH on 25

Two brothers were reunited after 15 years, which was perhaps an ordinary event for other siblings, but the method that M.D. McCarthy used to reach his brother Hugh in Bath, NH was not ordinary. M. D. traveled the first 505 miles of his trip from Teletroid, Alaska, by use of a dog team to make the reunion possible. An Auto Livery was conducted by Gray’s Garage, offering rides in new easy riding cars with careful drivers, instead of horse-drawn carriages with. A young man who claimed to want to go to college and was asking people in Meredith for 39 cents in return for a subscription to a periodical was met with some skepticism because none of those who gave 49 cents to a young man with a similar deal the previous year were known to have received their promised publication. That was but one of several stories of fraud mentioned in the 1914 newspaper. A first page story included a letter signed by the patients at the state sanatorium for tuberculosis patients at Glencliff claiming that they were not receiving proper food. A state

purchasing agent had been put in charge of ordering the food for the institution and the patients found the food supplied to be of inferior quality. They thanked the Concord Evening Monitor for informing the public that the men and women at Glencliff who were fighting for their lives were not being properly fed. Glencliff residents argued that before the state took over the purchasing duties there had been but few complaints about the food. But as the new year began they agreed that the labels on the outside of the canned goods were works of art, but the contents within were of poor quality. “Small cherries, pale and tasteless pineapple, hard, inferior pears, floating around disconsolately in a sea of slightly sweetened liquid, etc., etc. One can contained a large gypsy moth, possibly introduced to improve the flavor. The moth was in an excellent state of preservation and was on exhibit for some time, but unfortunately it has been lost. Perhaps some desperately hungry patient ate it. Who knows.” So wrote the author of the letter signed by the 52 residents a t the Glencliff sanatorium. The letter stated that the patients couldn’t say that a large bunch of bananas hadn’t been

ordered on Friday, but could say that they hadn’t received them, nor had they received the expected chowchow and picalili. The ordering agent, they insisted, should have known that Friday was an unlucky day and he should have ordered the food on Thursday. The newspaper that cost two cents in 1914 contained a wealth of

information and plenty of advertisements to reveal much of the customs and culture of the time. If a man/woman of that era could have read today’s newspapers they would find content that they would consider ordinary, but much that would no doubt seem odd.

26 GRAY from 9 cause you don’t want to have to slow down. Where are you going in such a hurry anyway? I see many people driving this way, then they pull into the donut shop. Really? The bottom line is

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 20, 2022 — this: We have to care about something other than ourselves and our own agenda… to see the bigger picture… to be aware of and understand the impact (good or bad) that we have on each other. Be better. Do better. Choose to

be a good human. And get professional help if you experience road rage like tailgating and aggression. It just creates more unnecessary stress. Don’t we have enough? Slow down. Think things through. Plan

ahead. For crying out loud… LOOK ahead. Put down your phone. Pay attention. Lives matter. Driving is honestly one of the single most dangerous things humans do. Let’s not make it more dangerous than it already is. Honestly, we are too advanced as a species to be behaving like such barbarians behind the wheel. So, I’ll leave you with this question: How’s YOUR driving? Leslie A. Gray is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and operates Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness, PLLC in Laconia NH. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 20, 2022 — MALKIN from 6 to cast ballots in local elections: Garrett Park, Takoma Park, Somerset, Chevy Chase, Martin’s Additions and Barnesville. An additional five Maryland municipalities, two Vermont towns, two U.S. territories and San Francisco (school board elections only, for now) have also opened their voting booths to noncitizens. And don’t forget: In 1993, the federal “Motor Voter” law “expanded the franchise” for political expediency -exacerbating the perilous trend of lowering the safeguards for voting that continues to undermine the value of U.S. citizenship today. The nationwide granting of driver’s licenses to illegal aliens paved the way for untold election theft. Former Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner Alan C. Nelson’s warning nearly 30 years ago when Takoma Park passed its noncitizen voting referendum remains more trenchant than ever: “In many countries of the world, an alien is always an alien. In our country, we are proud that our laws and social policies encourage aliens of all races and cultures to become citizens. In recent years, however, an increasing number of aliens have not pursued citizenship. ... This trend is disturbing, because it could seriously affect the assimilation process immigrants have pursued in this nation for 200 years. ... This important value of becoming a citizen is lost if an alien can vote without becoming a citizen. Any legal resident alien can become a U.S. citizen in five years. That is not an unreasonable time to

wait to be able to participate in our democracy. ... The five-year wait emphasizes the value of citizenship as a requirement to vote and to becoming a full member of the community. ... If local voting by noncitizens is allowed, state and federal voting could be next. Either there is a policy basis for noncitizens to vote, or there is not. If we open the door, it cannot be closed halfway.” It should be as glaring as Lady Liberty’s torchlight that election reform begins with a complete, total and immediate immigration moratorium. METZLER from 7 growth after falling one percent in 2020, grew 4.3 in 2021 and may reach 3 percent this year. India appears to stand alone with economic recovery amid a terrible Covid wave. The Report cites, “India’s economic recovery is on a solid path, amid rapid vaccination progress, less stringent social restrictions… after falling 10.6 percent in 2020, GDP is projected to expand by 6.7 per cent in 2022 after a 9 per cent expansion in 2021… Robust export growth and public investments underpin economic activity.” Throughout the European Union conditions are still facing headwinds. The Report states, “The aggregate GDP of the EU-27, after shrinking by 6 per cent in 2020, bounced back by an expected 4.7 percent in 2021. It may be followed by a further 3.9 percent expansion in 2022.”

Latin America equally faces complex economic conditions. “Real GDP expanded by an estimated 6.5 per cent in 2021 following the 7.4 percent contraction in 2020, the region’s deepest pull back in 120 years. Growth is projected to average only 2.2 percent in 2022,” the Report cautions. For example, Argentina endured a 9.9 percent fall in 2020, followed by 9.8 percent growth last year but is only expected to reach 2.2 percent this year. Venezuela witnessed a minus 30 percent in 2020, and minus 3 percent last year only to hopefully reach 3 percent in 2022. Dr. Hamid Rashid, Chief of the UN’s Economic Monitoring Branch in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, warned correspondents, “The road ahead is bumpy, if not perilous.” He added that while the past year saw some rebounds globally, there has

been a steep increase in overall poverty with 64 million more people in poverty in 2022 than in 2019. Dr. Rashid stresses that there is “uneven recovery because of an uneven access to vaccines.” Even before the pandemic in 2020, there was a massive rise in debt across the world. Those effects are now manifesting themselves in wider global inflation. Inflation, now at a stunning 7 percent in the U.S., serves as an across the board tax on the entire society, driving up costs for all and serving as a foreboding undertow to a more robust rebound. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, January 20, 2022 — STOSSEL from 7 tham, says, “I made a book for white children that encourages them to connect with their heartbreak about racism.” Nomani says, “Just imagine if a black child was to get a book that said ‘blackness is a bad deal?’ ... Shame is used as a lever of control over people. It should not be done with children.” “America has a history of racism,” I say. “We have to confront it,” she says. “But America does not have

a monopoly on racism. I come from a nation of people of ‘color,’ and they are racist.” India, her home country, had a nasty caste system for thousands of years. Slavery began in the Middle East. It thrived in Africa long before slaves were brought to America. Americans (along with Brits, the French and Mexicans) actually helped end the practice. But today American students think America invented slavery. This is “state-spon-

sored indoctrination,” says Nomani. “It is a bigotry that they are teaching. ... It’s just so immoral. I am a brown Muslim woman, an immigrant in America. I know more freedoms in this country than I could in any Muslim country in the world.” “But they’re not in a Muslim country,” I point out. “They’re in America, and there is still racism here.” “But to suggest that this is all of America is as racist and bigoted ... as being racist and bigoted against

people of color,” she responds. People need to care about this, says Nomani, “because it’s the taxpayers that are funding this.” Some conservatives want to ban the teaching of CRT. That’s not a good idea. Government shouldn’t be banning ideas or taking choices away from teachers. Bans shield students from important topics. A better solution is legalizing school choice. Let parents take our

BOSAK from 19 mine for ducks. A large lake with an open pool in the middle, for instance, is a great place to look for common mergansers, ring-necked ducks, and other species. A section of a pond’s edge kept open by a stream or river flowing into it is another potential hot spot. Nature provides for those wishing for frozen water and those wishing for open water in a New England winter. Sure it’s cold, but why would anybody want to live anywhere else?
