Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby Preview by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

Each winter the Meredith Rotary Club holds the Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby, usually the second weekend in February. The derby attracts thousands of anglers and spectators to New Hampshire. While derby participants may fish any public waters in the state, many try their luck on Lake Winnipesaukee, since the derby headquarters are at Hesky Park in Meredith.

Plus, Lake Winnipesaukee holds all of the seven fish species that can win money. This year’s derby will be held February 12 & 13. It’s an ice fishing derby, and part of the draw is the chance at winning a piece of the over $50,000 in prizes. The bulk of winnings are awarded to anglers who enter, or board as most regulars say, a fish that holds one of the top five spots in one of the seven qualifying fish categories each day, See MOORE on 20

Supporting The Madness To The Editor: News alert everyone as we get ready to follow Senators Hassan and Shaheen and President Biden into a possible war with Russia. One hundred and fifty thousand Russian troops are in place. Some units are just fifty miles from Kiev. Putin means business following approval by President Biden on the NordStream 2 pipeline into Germany while he said that it may only be a small incursion which should make everyone feel better. Germany relies on Russia for half its energy so it is no surprise that they are not cooperating with NATO. This is going on with a country that has nuclear weapons on a grand scale. Senators Hassan and Shaheen are quick to support this madness and continue to support this administration on every issue. Has anyone heard otherwise from these senators? Apparently, thousands of U.S. Troops will be sent to the Ukraine. I assume that Senators Hassan and Shaheen will be updating the voters as this plays out. Once again, focus on what they do and not what they say. Kenneth L. Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

China Controls Critical Supplies

To The Editor: Alan Dowd documents some problems with China in The American Legion Magazine of

December 2020, and I liberally quote from the article. The COVID 19 pandemic has highlighted the adverse impact on the world attributable to China’s domination of the production of medicines, personal protective equipment and other medical supplies. Prior to the pandemic China produced “ 35.9 percent of America’s antibiotics, 49.8 percent of our medical bandages, 71.7 percent of our facemasks and 77.2 percent of our plastic gloves. During the pandemic China “ quietly managed to buy up much of the world’s N95 masks. “ China, a potential adversary, also controls the production of rare earth elements, which are used in the manufacture of a wide array of products, including “ cell phones, televisions, vehicle engines, computers, lasers, industrial magnets, fiber-optics, and superconductors, and they are also used in our military hardware such as “ F-35 aircraft and our M1A2 tank. “ A number of friendly countries are working together to move the manufacture of critical supplies and elements away from China to facilities in Australia, Japan, South Korea, India, Europe and Latin America, but the U.S. cannot rely on foreign manufacturers for these critical products. We must speed up our manufacturing of these items in our country. Donald Moskowitz Londonderry, NH.

History Lesson To The Editor: For those of you old enough to remember the cause leading up to World War II, you will remember it was the “blitzkrieg war” invasion of Poland by Hitler on September 1, 1939. For those of you not old enough to know, or those who slept through history classes, let me give you a brief account of the underlying documented situations which led up to the sudden and unprovoked invasion of Poland on that September morning in 1939. It was “appeasement” on the part of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and the leaders of France and Italy. Some grade school kids may recognize this as situations like “Give me your lunch money, kid, and I promise I (bully kid!) won’t bother you anymore,”… only to have the same or similar situations go on and on with greater catastrophes. With countries, “appeasement” is a diplomatic policy of granting political, material, or territorial concessions to an aggressive power (bully!) in order to avoid conflict (repercussions on a “weaker nation!). Such is the current situation between Russia (bully!) and Ukraine (“little kid being picked on”). The Munich Agreement of Sept. 30, 1938 was supposed to prevent Hitler and the Nazi War Machine from any incursion into Czechoslovakia if Czechoslovakia “gave up” the Sudentenland region to Germany. The Sudentenland is an area where more than 3 million people, mainly ethnic Germans, See MAILBOAT on 27

At a certain point, my shared driveway splits in two. My neighbor is off to the right. I’m on the left. A row of about 10 eastern hemlocks separates the driveways. The other day as I drove down the driveway before it splits, I noticed hundreds of little hemlock cones under the trees. Maybe thousands. It instantly brought me back to one of my favorite winter birding moments. I was still relatively new to birdwatching when I took a long walk in Pisgah State Park. The park has several entrance points. The one I used on this day was my favorite entrance. The trail from the parking lot leads down a long hill. Once at the bottom of the hill, it’s like the rest of the world is a million miles away. No houses, cars or anything. Just woods and other interesting habitats to explore and enjoy. On this day, light snow was falling when I arrived. The snow picked up steadily as I continued walking, but it was a gentle, windless snowfall and actually quite calming as I remember. Perhaps that’s why I kept walking and walking. Eventually, I heard a faint pitter-patter ahead of me. The sound got louder as

Greta Garbo stars in ‘The Temptress’ At The Flying Monkey PLYMOUTH -

It’s a film with two completely different endings: one sad and tragic, and the other uplifting and positive. It’s ‘The Temptress’ (1926), an MGM romantic drama starring Greta Garbo, then just starting a legendary Hollywood career. Studio boss Louis B. Mayer found the original ending to ‘The Temptress’ so depressing, he ordered a second—and much happier— conclusion. In the original version, Elena returns to Paris and the movie concludes tragically. The revised version sees the film end in Argentina on a much happier note. Both endings will be screened at the Flying Monkey: first the original “tragic” conclusion, then the more optimistic ending. Theaters were then allowed to choose which ending to show to audiences. See both conclusions when ‘The Temptress’ is screened with live music on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center, 39 South Main St., Plymouth, N.H. Showtime is 6:30 p.m. General admission is $10. The screening will feature live accompaniment by silent film musician Jeff Rapsis.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Valentine’s Greetings Valentine’s Day is upon us again. A time when couple show their love for one another using words created by someone else. Of course, by Brendan Smith that is not fair Weirs Times Editor to say. Not everyone decides to go the Greeting Card route to show their affection, there are also things like candy, flowers and a night out on the town. Some folks don’t even need to buy anything for their mate as long as they feel that love deeply in their heart and let them know it. This works especially well on Valentine’s Day morning when you have completely forgotten what day it is right up to the minute your wife gives you the card she carefully picked out for you. (Or as in my case, carefully made by hand.) I often thought I would be a good greeting card creator, coming up with clever funny rhymes and heartfelt sentiments, especially the clever funny lines. So, just in case someone from the greeting card industry happens to be reading this, here are some of my ideas for Valentine’s Day cards specifically created to express one’s feelings in these pandemic times. They might be a little late, but when the next virus comes a calling, I’ll be first in line with the ideas. Why Airbnb Banned Me Whoopi Says Holocaust Wasn’t About Targeting Jews. (And My Hubby, Too!) Here’s Why That Matters So here is the grim reality of life in Woke America 2022. In November, I spoke at a peaceful conference held by an organization that is deemed a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League. The title of my talk was “Race, Immigration, and Con. Inc: How I Came to See the Light.” It was a wide-ranging discussion of my three by Michelle Malkin decades of reporting on the nation’s deSyndicated Columnist mographic and cultural deterioration -which I’ve chronicled firsthand on college campuses, at our borders, and in every crime-ridden, riotprone, and mass migration-transformed metropolis, from Los Angeles to Seattle and Portland, to Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York and Denver. As I’ve done throughout my career, I lambasted both Swamp Democrats and establishment Republicans for selling us out. The speech delved into the K-20 metastasis of anti-white curriculum, the corporate media’s whitewashing of black-on-Asian attacks, and the long campaign to censor nationalist dissidents who put America first. A week after my talk, San Francisco-based Airbnb notified me that I was banned from using its services ever again and imperiously deleted my account. Poof! “My name’s Cedar, and I’m with Airbnb’s Trust team,” the Nov. 24, 2021, email began. “It has come to our attention that you were a keynote speaker for the 2021 American Renaissance Conference earlier this month in Tennessee. Airbnb’s community policies prohibit people who are members of or actively associate with known hate groups. Due to your promotion and participation in a known white nationalist and white supremacist conference, we have determined that we will remove your account from Airbnb. This is consistent with action we’ve taken to ban people associated with this conference in past years.” Airbnb’s ideological witch hunts have claimed an unknown number of victims since 2016 as part of a woke company initiative to root out “bias” and expel anyone deemed an “extremist” with a “dangerous organization affiliation.” Press coverage of previous purges strongly suggests that the aforementioned character assassins of the Southern Poverty Law Center are involved through use of their far left, anti-white, anti-right “Hatewatch” list. Ever since I wrote my first book, “Invasion,” in 2002, the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League goons See MALKIN on 28

This week, former award-winning actress and highly decorated blowhard Whoopi Goldberg made a fool of herself. This came as no surprise; Goldberg does that quite regularly on “The View.” The good by Ben Shapiro news for Goldberg is that Syndicated Columnist no one notices -- trying to identify which fatuous host takes the cake for most imbecilic comment on any given day is an exercise in multivariate calculus, so Goldberg often tends to meld into the wallpaper of daftness. But on Monday, Goldberg truly stood out. Discussing an obscure Tennessee school board deciding to remove the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel “Maus” from a Holocaust unit for eighth-graders, Goldberg launched into an explanation of the Holocaust dazzling in both its ignorance and its malignity. Joy Behar, the usual top contender for the Crown of Idiocy, led off by explaining that the Tennessee school board members “don’t like history that makes white people look bad.” Then Goldberg got going: “Maybe. This is white people doing it to white people. Y’all go fight amongst yourselves.” This comment would have been insanely insulting, in and of itself: Here was Goldberg, referring to Nazis and Jews as “white people doing it to white people.” But Goldberg was just getting started. “If we’re going to do this,” Goldberg said, “let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race.” Behar correctly said, “They considered Jews a different race.” But Goldberg would not tolerate the dissent: “It’s not about race. It’s not about race ... It’s about

man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about.” At this point, Ana Navarro attempted to intervene and stop the crazy train. “But it’s about white supremacy,” Navarro said. “It’s about going after Jews and gypsies.” No, said Goldberg. “These are two white groups of people ... You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.” The asininity cannot be overstated here. It is absolutely clear that the Nazis targeted Jews as a race; Hitler wasn’t exactly hiding the ball when he stated in “Mein Kampf”: “Is not their very existence founded on one great lie, namely, that they are a religious community, whereas in reality they are a race?” Hitler repeatedly referred to the Jews as a race of parasites, and targeted Jews on the basis of ethnicity rather than religious adherence. The question must be asked, then: What, precisely, did Goldberg think she was doing? The answer is that she believed she was upholding the intersectional theory of race and racism. That theory holds that society is structured in a hierarchy of victimized and victimizing groups; that groups that are disproportionately successful are victimizers, and that groups that are disproportionately less successful are victimized. Jews are disproportionately successful; thus, they are white. And, intersectional theory posits, racism is not defined as a belief that any other race is superior or inferior to another; instead, racism means -- as the Anti-Defamation League recently defined it -- “the marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy See SHAPIRO on 29

Inflation Inflation is the worst in 40 years. The price of cars is up 37%. Gas is up 49%. During the last few years, as politicians spent ever more money, exby John Stossel perts told us not Syndicated Columnist to worry. Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, said inflation would be “transitory.” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, “I don’t anticipate inflation is going to be a problem.” Now she says, “I’m ready to retire

the word transitory.” What went wrong? “Big corporations have taken advantage,” says Rep. Ted Lieu. Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted: “greedy corporations are charging Americans extra.” It’s “price gouging.” This is nonsense. “Greed is constant,” says economist David Henderson in my new video. “If it’s greed, how do we explain prices falling?” When oil prices fall, is it because “oil companies just suddenly decide, ‘I’m gonna be less greedy’?” Prices change because of supply and demand.

Inflation results “from too much money chasing too few goods,” explains Henderson. “If government’s spending more money, that’s more money chasing too few goods.” Lately, government borrowed from the Fed, and spent much more money. Under President Donald Trump, the national debt rose $7.8 trillion. Under President Joe Biden, it’s grown $2.2 trillion in just one year. Biden wants to spend even more -- a record $6 trillion this year. Where will they get the money? Government has no money of its own, so increased spending means politicians must borrow more, tax more, or, easiest of all, create money

out of thin air by just printing it. In the last few years, that’s what they did. In an untested experiment, the Fed printed more money than ever in history. All this new money sloshing around the economy makes money we have less valuable. You notice the price increases, but you may not notice the damage inflation does to your savings. If you put $10,000 under your pillow, 7% inflation will reduce that to $2,342 in just 20 years. If you were counting on those savings for retirement, too bad. Most of your savings will be gone. Olympic Pivot to Ukraine? The ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics have averted our attention from a possible geopolitical clash of titans. As the by John J. Metzler Games progress Syndicated Columnist under a mantle of Covid restrictions, controversy over China’s domestic political repression, and yes, the adrenaline thrill of a global sporting event, military forces are gathering in both Eastern Europe and East Asia which threaten freedom and could jolt the global balance of power. I recall the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia back in 2014 when an already resurgent Russia and

its leader Vladimir Putin put on a good show and sporting spectacle in the snowy mountains while at the same time planning to dismember neighboring Ukraine. Just after the Winter Games in late February, Moscow began a series of covert military actions supporting Russian ethnic separatists in the eastern Ukrainian Donbas region and shortly thereafter, annexing Crimea in March. The timeline was unmistakable. The world was watching elsewhere. Just before the start of the current Olympics, Vladimir Putin visited Beijing to meet with China’s Communist Party leader Xi Jinping; the meeting exhibited not only political choreography but produced a stunningly clear message of intent. In a wide-ranging

statement Russia and China coordinated their positions on key diplomatic flashpoint throughout the world. Their perspectives were formed from what they perceive as lacking American leadership following the Afghanistan debacle. The Joint statement stressed that Russia and China “oppose further enlargement of NATO.” Moscow moreover added, “The Russian side reaffirms its support for the One-China principle, confirms that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, and opposes any forms of independence of Taiwan.” Russia equally supports China’s position relating to the search for the origins of the Coronavirus which was traced to Wuhan. Both authoritarian powers restated their political bottom line; keep

Ukraine out of NATO and Taiwan belongs to Communist China. Though clearly not a formal Treaty, the joint Putin/Xi Statement of Policy remains the most direct and forceful outlines of interests since the Cold War. This signifies a political tryst between tyrants. Yet ironically it was on Valentine’s Day 1950 during a trip by China’s dictator Mao Tsetung to visit Stalin that The Sino/ Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance and Mutual Assistance was signed; which at the time was hailed as “eternal and indestructible.” Even then this was more a marriage of connivance than a marriage of convenience. Nonetheless for contemporary Western policy makers, even the chimera of Sino/ See METZLER on 26

What Should You Do With A Tax Refund?

Are you expecting a tax refund this year? If so, what will you do with it? Of course, the answer largely depends on the size of your refund. For the 2020 tax year, the average refund was about $2,800, according to the Internal Revenue Service. But whether your refund this year will be about that size, smaller or larger, you can find ways to benefit from the money.

Here are some possibilities: Contribute to your IRA. You’ve got until April 18 to fully fund your IRA for the 2021 tax year. But if you’ve already reached the maximum for 2021, you could use some, or all, of your refund for your 2022 contribution. Assuming you did get around $2,800, you’d be almost halfway to the $6,000 annual contribution limit. (If you’re 50 or older, you can contribute up to $7,000. Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to invest your refund in a 529 education savings plan. A 529 plan’s earnings can grow federal income-tax free, and withdrawals are federal income-tax free provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. If you invest in your own state’s plan, you might get a tax deduction or credit. A 529 plan can be used to pay for college, vocational training and even some K-12 expenses in some states. Plus, if you name one child as a beneficiary, and that child’s educational journey does not require the funds from a 529 plan, you may change the beneficiary to another eligible family member of the original beneficiary. Add to the “cash” part of your portfolio. It’s generally a smart move to keep at least a portion of your overall investment portfolio in cash or

cash equivalents, because the presence of cash can help you in two ways. First, since its value won’t change, it can help cushion, at least to a degree, the effects of market volatility on your portfolio. And second, by having cash available, you’ll be ready to take advantage of attractive investment opportunities when they arise. Boost your emergency fund. You could use your tax refund to start or supplement an emergency fund. Ideally, this fund should contain three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. (If you’re already retired, you might need this fund to cover a full year’s worth of expenses.) Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into long-term investments to pay for costly housing or auto repairs or large medical bills. Reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy to minimize your debt load, even if you’re careful about your spending habits. But the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest for your future. So, you may want to consider using some of your tax refund to pay off some debts, or at least reduce them, starting with those that carry the highest interest rates. Donate to charity. You could use part of your refund to donate to a charitable organization whose work you support. And if you itemize on your tax return, part of your gift may be deductible. A tax refund is always nice to receive – and it’s even better when you put the money to good use.

When we think of slavery in New Hampshire we understandably think of its association with black history. There are, however, other people, even slaveholders, who have felt enslaved who were not actually slaves in the usual sense of the word. An 1834 article in a New Hampshire newspaper, but taken from an Ohio publication, declared that, before the American Revolution, Americans were slaves to the British. The object of our forefathers, it said, “was to secure their freedom.” The opinion piece went on to say, “They were slaves, and had they held their peace, they and their children had remained slaves. British oppression had required them to obey laws which they had no voice in enacting – to support a government from which they received little protection – to furnish luxu-

To rid themselves of this evil was their prime object.” The writer then went on to lament a different type of slavery. “Our land in its entire length and breadth is overrun with slaves. The habitual drinker is a slave. I have seen him leave his business, throw down his tools, and hurry away for his dram with a thousand times the despatch that any slave ever obeyed a master...the man enslaved by such an appetite will fight or steal or lie to please

This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

the apostle Paul to write to a town called Thessalonica, I asked him to describe a period of time in which lawlessness will reign. It will be in that environment, that the last World leader, the Antichrist, will appear (2 Thessalonians 2:7). He will transgress every law in order to achieve his wicked ends. What you are witnessing in your country is the rapid development of the environment that will usher in his appearance. You are, as you say, “greasing the skids,” for that time. Let me cite just a few of the evidences that you are in that environment now. Your President has, by executive orders, violated the laws of your land on the inclusion of immigrants into your country. In the darkness of night, millions are pouring into your country in clear violation of the laws of your land. This is not being done by some obscure public official but by your President and by many of your lawmakers in your Congress. These are the very ones who placed their hands on a Bible, appealing to me as their witness, and who promised to defend the laws of your country. Did you notice that in many of the significant trials being held in your country that your President and Congressional members convicted the defendants, in public statements, even before the verdict was made? In many of these cases the verdict

declared them innocent. Your laws state that a person is innocent until proven guilty. To have your supreme leader and lawmakers pronounce people guilty before a trial is concluded and the verdict is made is reprehensible and lawless. Your constitution has amendments to the laws given in that document and one of them is the right to free speech. This right makes it against the law to limit free speech. Yet, prominent corporations and businesses who control media have been allowed to violate that law with impunity. Not only have they violated the law, but they have done it in order to silence the voice of the opposition and thereby attempt to monopolize their rule in the political arena. Monopolies are also illegal in your country, because free speech is essential to freedom. Yet many of your leaders ignore these acts of lawlessness, fail to bring harsh punishment against those who practiced them and sadly encourage them, often with personal violations of the law. I cite these, and there are many others, to affirm that you are not only progressing toward a condition of lawlessness, but you are in it. You are awash in its environment and yet you can’t see and won’t take action to stop it. You don’t realize that by allowing your lawless deeds, you’re actually

Letters From God

QUESTION: Why Are We Becoming Lawless In Ways We Have Never Witnessed Before? You’ve made a radical turn away from me. You say you trust in God on your money, but like Isaiah the prophet said, you have become a people who “honor me with your lips but your heart is far from me.” (Isaiah 29:13). As a result you no longer have regard for my will and my commands. Because your hearts have turned cold to my laws, they are now turning cold to your laws. “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12). Thus lawlessness is increasing. You must know that when I revealed myself to you in my book, the Bible, I let you know clearly that I am not bound by time as you are. I am eternally present. I have no beginning and I have no end, I live in your past and I live in your future. That is why there are so many predictions in the Bible of future events. I predicted them with confidence because I’ve already been there and witnessed the events that have yet to occur in your time and space limitations. In a book that I asked

sealing your fate. Soon lawlessness will be so predominant that you will put in position a person who will take it to its extreme. The Antichrist will use his lawless authority to bring the world to the point of near destruction. The only thing that will stop him, will be the return of my Son, as I predicted (Revelation 19). He will come back not as the suffering Lamb to pay the penalty for your sins but as the conquering Lion to end human history and begin my righteous reign on earth, that I have also promised long ago (Revelation 22). For all who continue to reject me and my laws, you will sadly, not only lose your freedom in time but also for eternity. I wish you would open your eyes and your heart to me. I write this because I love you enough to tell you the truth. God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Big Papi And Baseball’s Hall Of Fame by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

NEWS ITEM: The Baseball Writers Association of America selected former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for 2022 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kudos to “Big Papi.” Such news is a reason to celebrate for family, friends, and fans. But concurrently, these announcements also cause despair and dismay for the likes of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling. And their peeps. Pete Rose’s name also always comes up in conjunction with H of F announcements. The all-time hit king (4,256) is permanently ineligible due to gambling misadventures and associated mendacity. And following annual Hall of Fame announcements are the annual rush of sports columns about who should or shouldn’t be in the H of F. Like this one. While selection is inherently subjective, baseball—more than any other sport—is replete with statistics, numbers, and metrics to make cases for or against induction. (An aside: How does one make a case to get an NFL offensive lineman into the Pro Football H of F in Canton, Ohio?)

David Ortiz. And the numbers clearly make cases for Bonds (762 home runs, 7 MVPs) and Clemens (354 wins, 7 Cy Young Awards). But neither was selected for the Hall, in this, their last year of eligibility, due to supposed cheating via illicit use of steroids or other performance enhancers. Inevitably—and inconveniently—it was pointed out that Ortiz tested positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2003. But Ortiz never tested posted after 2004, when MLB strengthened and defined its PED testing program. He hit 54 home runs in 2006. Some also questioned Ortiz’ selection because he was primarily a designated hitter who spent minimal time on the field. A fair question. And part of the answer is that unlike other candidates (i.e. Clemens) Ortiz was

a popular and likeable player who didn’t bounce from team to team to team. Big Papi became a Boston icon during his 14 years in the Hub—especially after the 2013 Marathon bombings when he led the BoSox to a World Series title. Ortiz was a leader with an appealing personality and that “je ne sais quoi” which made him an extra-special player. Intangibles exist and they matter. It’s a bit ironic that H of F announcements, MVP Awards, All-Star selections, etc. cause so many arguments and create such debate. But that’s because they matter and because people want achievement and accomplishment due receive due recognition, especially for their peeps. The same dynamic applies to Oscar and Emmy Awards, the National Honor Society,

Teacher-of-the-Year, and military decorations and awards. Napoleon marveled at how soldiers would fight long and hard and risk everything “for a bit of colored ribbon.” Many—perhaps most—acts of valor are never recognized. Some heroes never give it a thought. Others are consumed by jealously and resentment. Record-setting Cornell running back Ed Marinaro finished second to Auburn quarterback Pat Sullivan in the 1971 Heisman Trophy voting. He later admitted being angry for decades of what many agreed was a slight to the Ivy Leaguer. But while recognitions will always be imperfectly awarded, they have their places as they bring people together to acknowledge legacies while honoring achievement So when Ortiz’s H of F plaque is formally unveiled in Cooperstown on July 24, the focus should be on the man and his accomplishments. The event will certainly be duly and deservedly celebrated by Big Papi. And his peeps! SPEAKING OF CANTON … A recent WWW piece listed 30 football players who should be kicked out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Among them were Paul Hornung, Ken Stabler, and Terrell Owens. Hornung was susSee MOFFETT on 27

Let Your Sweetheart Know You Care!

The History of Valentine’s Day

Is the history of Valentine’s Day expressed in the current celebration of yummy chocolates, lovely cards, and sparkling engagement rings? What is the story behind such a highly-retailed celebration? Some say the day is named after a bishop named Valentine, who was stationed in the Roman Empire. Claudius II was the Emperor at that time. He thought that unmarried men made better soldiers, so he decided to make it a law that young men could not marry. Around 270 A.D., Valentine took pity on the ostracized soldiers who were not permitted to marry or see their sweethearts. He became an advocate of these young lovers and began to perform secret marriages.

Another version of the history of Valentines Day tells that Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter. Just before his death, he sent her a note and signed it “from your Valentine.” An aura of romance surrounded his demise and those who knew about it spread the tale. Bishop Valentine became Saint Valentine with his fame extending to England and France. See HISTORY on 25

He was soon found out and jailed. Emperor Claudius II attempted to convert Valentine to begin worshipping the Roman gods, but Valentine refused. Instead, he tried to convert Claudius to Christianity and Valentine sentenced to be executed on February 24, 270.

Flora Stewart (Photo from New York Public Library). slavery, did approve a resolution in June of the year 1847 which stated “That we regard the institution of slavery as a moral, social, and political evil, and as such we deeply regret its existence, and are willing to concur in all reasonable and constitutional measures that may tend towards its

removal..” That statement was followed, however, by a “but,” followed by “...we are unalterably opposed to all movements having for their avowed object, or probable effect, the dissolution of our national Union, or the violation of our national constitution...” The resolution also stated that policies concerning slavery be left to the constitutions of the states, while declaring that any new territories to be added to the country where slavery was not already allowed should be slave free. From publications from the nineteenth century, including The Manchester Mirror, we are told of an African American woman and former slave who was reported to then be the oldest person living in New Hampshire at the

age of 117 or maybe even 118. Some believed her to have lived to be at least 120 years old. Her name was Flora Stewart, and, according to Rebecca Bayeck of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, “she was one of the most famous citizens in New Hampshire in the 19th century.” She was born a slave in the 1750’s. The family into which she was born was a slave-holding one by the name of Wilson. As was often done Flora took for herself, or was given, the Wilson name as her last name. The place of Flora Wilson’s birth was Londonderry, New Hampshire, and she lived in Londonderry until she was married to a man with the last name of Stewart and moved to Candia where she became a slave of a trader named William Duncan. The couple had two sons and Flora was reportedly set free from slavery around the year 1810 and returned to Londonderry in 1835, or thereabout. Flora Wilson Stewart is remembered by a photograph that was taken of her on Nov.5, 1867, at the home of Governor Frederick Smyth. As previously stated she is said to have lived to be 120, having lived during the lifetimes of both President Washington and President Lincoln. As for the topic of “giving one their time,” it was used to describe the act of a parent releasing their child from family responsibilities, as well as family support. It was setting a child free to do their own thing, and the custom in the mid1800’s was to publish See SMITH on 23

Notices in 1830’s Farmers’ Cabinet newspaper, Amherst, NH.

SMITH from 22 the fact in the newspaper. Some of these children were minors, but that didn’t seem to be an obstacle to setting them “free.” A newspaper notice from the town of Mason, N.H. which was signed on Dec. 9, 1834 read, “This certifies, that I have this day given to my daughters, Susan Moors, Jane L. Moors, Sally Moors, and Gratia Moors, their time from this day until they become of age: I shall not claim their wages, or pay any debts of their contracting after this date. ABRAM MOORS.” Another notice from May 26, 1834, from the town of Amherst, N.H., stated, “ I, Levi Jones, do hereby, from this date, relinquish to my son PETER WOODBURY JONES, now a minor, all right and claim to his earnings, and give to him full liberty to labor and transact business on his own account. LEVI JONES.” While some New Hampshire parents were allowing their minor sons and daughters the freedom to govern their own lives, a letter to the Editor of the Northampton Courier, and shared by the Amherst Farmers’ Cabinet, gave notice

that manufacturers in the State of Georgia felt that they could successfully compete with the northern states when it came to manufacturing. One of the advantages that the Georgia businessmen felt they had over the northern states involved slave labor. The letter stated that young black slaves “...until they arrive at the age from 10 to 12, are seldom accounted of any profit, but rather an expense to their owners; for they must be clad and fed, while they are unable to engage in the hard work of the field. They can, however, be successfully employed in the factory

when quite young, and thereby not only support themselves but earn something for their masters. But this is one of the numerous advantages which southern man-

ufacturers have over the northern.” One might then argue that the efforts of those New Hampshire citizens who sought to put an end to slavery were not only right morally, but also beneficial for New Hamp-

shire manufacturing interests. Robert Hanaford Smith welcomes your comments at danahillsmiths@yahoo.com

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 10, 2022 — BOSAK from 3 get tricky following heavy snowfalls that cover grasses and weeds. That’s when some birds may rely on backyard feeders more than usual. Tall weeds growing around beaches are a godsend for birds such as snow buntings and horned larks. I recall a day when I lived near a beach and visited following a snowstorm. The snow was high, but the tops of some weeds still poked out. It was an interesting sight to see sparrows and kinglets standing on the snow and simply leaning over to grab the seeds. Typically, they have to land on the top of the weed and grab the seeds while the plant sways and bends under the weight of the bird. Another of my favorite “birds eating seeds in winter” stories happened about five years ago. I walked into a big box hardware store at the right time as they were selling off their perennials for $1 each. It was well into fall

and they must have needed the space to get ready for Christmas. I bought a few coneflower plants and repotted them into a large container on my deck. To my delight, the flowers lived in that container for several more months, well into November. They survived a few ice storms and a snowfall or two. When they faded, which was well after most of the other flowers were long gone, birds such as goldfinches, titmice and chickadees came around to pick out the seeds. Fruits, of course, are another good source of food for birds in the winter. But that’s a story for another day. HISTORY from 15 After his death, Valentine then became what is known as a “Patron Saint.” Some considered him the spiritual overseer of an annual festival in which young Romans would distribute cards of affection. This festival was held each February 14. There are Valentine cards in museums worldwide that date back to 1415. February has been the month to celebrate love ever since the Middle Ages. Even though the history of Valentines Day is unclear, it has become one of the most popular holidays among lovers and florists! Children exchange valentine cards decorated with current comic and cartoon icons. Adults have continued this tradition of card giving which makes this day, behind Christmas, the second largest card-sending holiday of the year.

26 METZLER from 7 Russian cooperation and military coordination can evoke nightmare scenarios. But does this signal that the Russian tanks will roll into Ukraine when the Olympic flame is extinguished in far off China? Will Vladimir Putin reach beyond his deceptions in the Donbas and perhaps probe Ukraine’s map in a punitive grab for additional territory? Will Xi Jingping try to seize the small island of Taiwan?

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 10, 2022 — Putin’s play book is starkly simple; create and foment tensions, smoke, mirrors and confusion. Maintain a steady flow of disinformation and at the same time act as the victim. The Russian ruler views Ukraine as a “little brother” which must be brought back to Mother Russia’s ethnic and political embrace. Thus Putin’s crude hyper-nationalism in smirking scornfully at Ukraine’s sovereignty and planning to dismember it piece by

piece. In the meantime the West is nervous but largely united. The USA and NATO states are ferrying munitions and lethal supplies to the Ukrainian military. Additional troops are being positioned in Poland and Romania and the vulnerable Baltic States. Yet, is the Ukrainian army trained well enough to operate some of the more sophisticated equipment without foreign military trainers? While the UN Secu-

rity Council finally met to discuss the simmering crisis, there was no attempt at a formal resolution given that both Moscow and Beijing would have used their powerful veto against it. Nonetheless, the open meeting served to shine light on Moscow’s continuing deceptions and threats to Ukraine’s borders. So what about democratic Taiwan’s security given these mendacious events? While NATO is not treaty bound to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty, neither is any country formally required to protect Taiwan. The U.S. defense treaty with the small island was abrogated by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1979. Thus though we are not legally bound by obligation, we are profoundly linked by shared national interests, as are Japan and Australia, to maintain Taiwan’s freedom and sovereignty in light of Beijing’s growing military provocations. In both cases deterrence remains the key to block aggression and a good defense underscores that military deterrence. Diplomacy keeps everybody talking while the world watches and prays for peace. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea, China.

STOSSEL from 7 Yet today’s politicians want to spend even more. Biden claims his spending bills will “reduce inflation.” “Biden’s wrong,” Henderson responds. “There’s no economic theory that says when the government spends a huge amount more money, prices fall.” Some people want government to stop inflation by imposing price controls. That would be “horrible,” says Henderson. Price controls were tried before. In 1971, President Richard Nixon ordered a freeze on all prices. It sounded reasonable. Too much inflation? Our intuition tells us that government can fix that with a price freeze. But “that’s where people’s intuition goes wrong,” says Henderson. Wrong because prices are not just money; they are also information. “Prices are signals ... that guide people,” explains Henderson. “Mess that up, you’ve really messed up the economy.” Price changes tell buyers what to avoid and sellers what to produce. When COVID-19 hit, the price of face masks rose sharply. Immediately, producers made more. New Balance switched from making footwear to making masks. Flexible pricing gets suppliers to produce what people really need. Now there are shortages of some products because COVID-19 interrupted supply chains. Price controls would make the shortages worse. Soon after Nixon froze prices, there were shortages of gasoline. I

drove around, wasting gas, searching for gas stations that had it. “Price controls are like saying it’s really cold and I’m going to solve that by breaking the thermometer,” says Henderson. “It’s actually worse than that because breaking the thermometer doesn’t reduce the temperature, whereas price controls cause actual shortages!” Venezuela’s price controls led to a shortage of food. And yet inflation got much worse. 270%, 700%, eventually 400,000% inflation! Once inflation starts, it’s hard to stop. In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe couldn’t collect enough in taxes to pay for his grand plans, so he printed more money. A few years later, Zimbabwe was printing 100 trillion-dollar bills. Such drastic inflation hasn’t happened here. It probably won’t because recently the Fed reigned itself in. But with Democrats and Republicans eager to spend more, it could happen here. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 10, 2022 — MAILBOAT from 2 lived. The Sudentenland had been recognized as a natural border between the Czech and the German states since the early Middle Ages. It provided a natural obstacle from any possible German attack. The Sudentland was of absolute strategic importance to Czechoslovakia. Germany had started a “low intensity” (“minor incursion” where have we heard that phrase, recently?) of Czechoslovakia on Sept. 17, 1938. Great Britain and France, which had “alliances,” or “security pacts” with Czechoslovakia, did an “about-face” on those agreements, and formally asked Czechoslovakia to “give up” its territory to Hitler which was followed by Poland (Sept. 21, 1938) and Hungary (Sept. 22, 1938) subsequently giving up some of their territory, also. The Munich Agreement of Sept. 29-30, 1938 was quickly and peacefully reached on Hitler’s terms, and signed by the Fascist and Nazi leaders of Italy and Germany and the leaders of Great Britain and France. British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, claimed that this agreement promoted “peace for our time” on Sept. 30, 1938. Hitler invaded Poland less than a year later on Sept. 1, 1939 in a “blitzkrieg-type-war” or “lightning war” which culminated 35 days later (Sept. 1, 1939 – Oct. 6, 1939) with the surrender of Poland. Great Britain and France immediately declared war on Germany starting World War II. The Munich Agreement of Sept., 1938 is widely regarded as a failed act of appeasement, and has become a byword for the futility of appeasing expansionist totalitarian states. To those living in some

countries of Eastern Europe, the Munich Agreement of 1938 has become known as The Munich Betrayal because it allowed Germany and the Third Reich to quickly and peacefully take over Czechoslovakia’s borderlands. It was supposed to be Hitler’s last territorial claim in Europe in order to promote peace. As you can see, this didn’t stop Hitler’s appetite for more territory and greater power. It just delayed the inevitable! Today, nearly a century later, we have a “bully” in Russia under the reign of Putin. He has slowly and steadily regained control of former Soviet states which claimed their independence after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the breakup of the former Soviet Union. Left unchecked, he will gobble up Eastern Europe, and create another Russian Empire! Former President Ronald Reagan and former Pope John Paul, II must be turning in their graves! Former members of the Polish Solidarity Union must be trembling! These three were the key players in crumbling the walls of the former Soviet Empire. While Putin may become the Hitler of the 21st century, Biden is certainly the Neville Chamberlain of the 21st Century by his appeasement to Putin of the Nord Stream Pipeline (a natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea providing Germany and all of Europe with Russian natural gas, thus enriching Putin with enough money to wage war upon his neighbors as Hitler did less than a century ago!) and not reinforcing our NATO Allies with American military might sooner. Let’s hope and pray history doesn’t repeat itself. Nick De Mayo Sugar Hill, NH

—OBITUARY— HARLAN “HARLIE” D. PUTNAM SR., 82 BRISTOL — Harlan “Harlie” Dean Putnam Sr., 82, died at Concord Hospital, Concord, NH, on January 22, 2022 from heart failure, facing some serious heart repair issues. He peacefully passed away with his wife and sons Harley and Mike by his side, and son Heath on the phone from Arizona. Harlie was born in Orford on October 27, 1939, son of Ora Don Putnam and Natalie Alberta Trask Putnam. Harlie, “Putt” to many of his young friends, has been a resident of Bristol since 1949. In 1960 he married his beloved wife of 61 years, Elaine “Susie” May Verrill, and they moved to New Hampton to live on “The Farm” with Susie’s widowed grandmother for two years, and then moving back to Bristol, building their own house on Fourth Street where they raised their three sons, Harlan Dean Putnam Jr., Michael George Putnam, and Heath Randall Putnam, all three of which made their parents extremely proud. Harlie was a member of the National Guard, enlisting part time with his friends from school. During his time in the “Guard,” he received notification of possible deployment to Vietnam, but he never received the orders to go. He started working at I.P.C. as a press operator. He was self-educated as a machinist. He worked for IPC/ Freudenberg for 19 years, then after leaving, became an owner/operator truck driver for nine years, working construction and 18-wheeling, then back to machinist. He was a beekeeper for 21 years, and was one of the founders and member of the Pemi-Baker Beekeepers Association. Active as a “mentor” and one of the teachers at Bee School, he was a leader of the “question and answer” period of the monthly meetings. Harlie was a member of the Bristol Baptist Church, and has served as a trustee in the past. His faith in God was real and he shared it with all with his message of “Don’t forget to thank God for the little things.” After his open-heart surgery, many years ago, he had an encounter with our Lord, which enforced his belief, and he shared that encounter humbly with many. He loved his family very much and was very involved in the activities of his three sons, Harley, Mike and Heath. Harlie loved snowmobiling and was very active in the Pemi-Valley Snowmobile Club since the Club’s inception. He always participated and shared the responsibilities of the upkeep and the grooming of the club trails, sometimes including the responsibilities as Assistant Trailmaster or Trailmaster. Boy Scouts was a blessing to his life growing up, and the Community Center, where he was part of the bucket brigade, when they were digging out for the basement. Living and working on farms, and starting work after school at a very young age, didn’t leave him a lot of play time, but gave him some money to buy a classy car and a motorcycle. From a teenager, he loved fixing up old cars and “souping up” the engines and mufflers (which the police would always make him remove, as far as Harlie was concerned (temporarily), and striking paint jobs (the girls loved). In his leisure time he loved “cruising,” watching cowboy movies, and watching the birds. Harlie will be missed by all. He was predeceased by his father, Ora Don Putnam, and his mother, Natalie Alberta Trask Putnam; half-brothers Leland Trask, Allen Trask and Edwin Trask; and sisters-in-law, Evalyn Trask, Hazel Trask, Marion King and Emily Verrill; and brother-in-law, Wayne Verrill. Harlan leaves behind his sister, Sharon Putnam Bucklin and husband John; his wife, Elaine “Susie” Verrill Putnam; sons, Harlan Putnam Jr. and wife Melissa Bucklin Putnam, Michael Putnam and wife Sharolyn Fortin Putnam, Heath Putnam and wife Elizabeth Seeler Putnam; grandchildren, Amy Putnam Poitras and husband Jeremy, Allison Putnam and partner Paul England, Elaina Putnam and fiance Colby Shinn, Joseph Putnam and partner Kailey Currier, Elaina and Joe’s mother, Annette Putnam, Alexander Putnam, Rachael Putnam and partner Anthony Gallo, and Julia Putnam; great-grandchildren, Kaelynn Lang, Dyllan Lang, Bridgett Lang, Darryn Uhlendorff, Cooper Putnam and Bradley Putnam; brother-in-law, Willard Verrill and wife Judy, sister-inlaw, Gloria Trask; sister-inlaw, Linda Verrill Dinger and husband; and brotherin-law, Larry Dinger; step-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and so many friends. We send a “heartfelt thank you” for Harlie’s comfort and care by the Bristol EMT’s and Cardiology Doctors and Nurses, and all at Concord Hospital, Concord, NH, for their thoughtfulness for us. A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 20, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in Bristol Baptist Church, 30 Summer Street. Pastor Wayne Toutaint will officiate. We invite you to come and request everyone wear a mask. There will be no calling hours and no gathering after. For those unable at this time to attend, we are hoping to have a Memorial in the late Spring for family and friends where we would like to try and have a parade of our “Cruisin’ Buddies” to drive up and around the foot of Newfound Lake and back, ending in Homeland Cemetery at a specified time for a small remembrance with Pastor Wayne officiating. Harlie will be interred at a later time. If you are so inclined, in lieu of flowers, the children of St. Jude’s Research Hospital always touched Harlie’s heart so much. He would always say, “No matter what you have wrong, there is always someone worse off.” St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Telephone 800- 805-5856.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 10, 2022 —

MALKIN from 6 have sought to stifle my voice. But this latest salvo crosses the line. It’s not enough that I -- a “woman of color” (the left’s own descriptive label, not mine) and mother of two multiracial children -- was pronounced guilty of “hate” crimes and “promotion” of “white supremacist” ideas for delivering a speech whose full content Airbnb didn’t even bother to obtain from me. The Airbnb bullies also banned my equally nonviolent, nonhateful husband -- who did not attend the conference and who is not a public figure or activist. Welcome to Guilt By Secondary Association. “As we can see that your Airbnb travels are typically reserved via your husband’s ac-

count,” Airbnb’s “Trust team” member “Cedar” told both my husband and me, “We will also proceed in removing his account.” Neither of us had ever had a negative review, complaint or policy violation of any kind. Are my kids next? Are yours? (Surprise: No response from Airbnb to my media inquiries on how many other family members of banned conservative and nationalist Airbnb customers have been swept into their thought police dragnet.) “Cedar” closed his/ her email by informing me that the only way to appeal Airbnb’s decision is “(i)f our understanding that you participated in the 2021 American Renaissance Conference is incorrect.”

Take note: You’re damned right I spoke peacefully and lawfully to the peaceful and lawful 2021 American Renaissance Conference and was honored to receive a warm welcome. I resoundingly reject the notion that condemning Black Lives Matter and antifa terrorists constitutes “hate.” I defy the Airbnb thought police who consider my husband and me “untrustworthy” and “dangerous” threats to community safety on par with convicted felons and sex traffickers. God willing, and with my readers’ and viewers’ help, I will fight these speech-stifling bigots who think they can get away with retaliating against me and my family for my journalism and activism.

I’ve received feedback from astute lawyers who note that public accommodation businesses in California, where Airbnb is based, are subject to the Unruh Civil Rights Act -- which forbids the very kind of anti-freespeech, anti-free-association and anti-equal housing discrimination Airbnb has visited upon me and my family. Much more is at stake, of course, and there are other sound legal grounds for seeking relief. As American Renaissance founder Jared Taylor told me this week: “Once again, in what used to be known as the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave,’ Big Tech is punishing people for what they say. After it gets finished with vaccine

freethinkers, election skeptics, and people who think all lives matter, who’s going to be left? Democrat toadies?” America First Foundation president and America First Political Action Conference founder Nick Fuentes, targeted by the feds, investigated by Dems and deplatformed by a multitude of woke businesses for his peaceful political advocacy, added: “Every day the list of digital services engaged in discrimination against Patriotic Americans grows longer. Deplatforming on Airbnb marks a chilling escalation in tactics used by Big Tech to silence American conservatives.” Cancel culture has reached a new escalation, and I don’t plan

on rolling over. Never have. Never will. I’ve raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for other patriots and heroes over the past 30 years. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 10, 2022 — SHAPIRO from 6 that privileges white people.” These two concepts, taken in tandem, mean that Jews cannot be considered victims of antisemitism. They are highly successful; they are white. Thus, they cannot be members of a victimized minority. This is why the mainstream Left is so reluctant to recognize the antisemitism of Hamas (Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman, for example, condemned Is-

rael for defending itself against rocket attacks by Hamas by decrying “Black and brown bodies being brutalized and murdered”); it is why the mainstream Left is complicit in the lie that the only true antisemitism springs from white supremacists, ignoring actual acts of Jew-hatred by members of minority populations. The intersectional Left’s conspiracy theory -- that a cabal of white victimizers (including Jews,

and now, Asians) control society for its own benefit -- inherently crosses streams with antisemitism. Goldberg’s comments aren’t an aberration. They’re merely the latest iteration of a pernicious and perverse theory of power in politics -- a conspiracy theory about groups that succeed and the systems in which they succeed.
