COMPLIMENTARY

The President As A Neighbor -

Lincoln’s NH Connection by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

It was my understanding during my early school years that the two most important former Presidents of the United States of America were George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Washington was the father of our country and Lincoln freed the slaves and preserved the Union of the States. Their pictures were prominent on the walls of the one-room schoolhouse I attended and we observed their birthdays on the

12th (Lincoln) and 22nd (Washington) of February. There was no Presidents’ Day in those times and the Washington- Lincoln duo were the only Presidents whose birthdays we celebrated. In my college days Lincoln didn’t get as much of the attention, but February 22nd was a special day at Nyack College which I attended. Classes were canceled and most of the school’s faculty and students went to New York City for a day of sightseeing and a special missions program at Carnegie Hall See SMITH on 24

New Artwork By Peter Ferber At Art Place

Portrait of President Abraham Lincoln by George P.A. Healy (1813 - 1894)

The Art Place in Wolfeboro is fortunate to still be able to present new original artwork by well-known Lakes Region artist Peter Ferber. This time, The Art Place is taking a different approach for the Peter Ferber Gallery show that will be held in February In place of having a onetime opening with many people awaiting the doors to open, we are presenting six of Peter’s new artwork for purchase on February 13th and additional paintings on February 27th. The exciting part of this is

that you will get to see these originals before they are presented for sale. They will be presented virtually on The Art Place website as well as in the two front windows of The Art Place, located at 9 North Main Street in downtown See FERBER on 26

To the Editor: Joe Biden has begun his Presidency by attacking the well-being of middle and lower income Americans by destroying their jobs, lowering their incomes, raising their cost of living, and increasing the threats to their personal safety. Using the excuse of Climate Change, Biden cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline and suspended new oil/gas leases on Federal lands. These actions kill tens of thousands of good American jobs, some highlyskilled, highly paid blue-collar jobs. Biden’s climate change actions will increase the cost of almost everything we buy: fuel, electricity, food, toilet paper, etc. Closing the Keystone XL pipeline increases petroleum transportation costs, greenhouse gases, and the likelihood of environmental damage. Stopping production on Federal lands reduces our energy independence and our national security, while benefitting Russia and other petroleum producers. Rejoining the Paris Climate Accords further increases our cost of living and destroys more, mostly blue collar, jobs. John Kerry acknowledged “we could go to zero (emissions) tomorrow and the (climate) problem isn’t solved”. So why hurt Americans and destroy American jobs now while developing the solutions and new

jobs? (Perhaps because the people making these decisions won’t suffer.) Biden suspended deporting illegal aliens almost all of whom are criminals, some of those responsible for harming Americans: killing 2000 directly, killing tens of thousands with their illegal drugs, and raping, robbing, and otherwise victimizing hundreds of thousands annually. Biden stopped building the border wall which helps protect American citizens while promising to restrict our rights to protect ourselves. Note that, despite no known threat, Congress has erected a wall around the Capitol and maintains thousands of National Guards-people for their protection. The Washington elite care about their “important” lives, but not the lives of the rest of us. The millions of illegal alien and other immigrant workers that Biden entices to come here will make the lives of the Americans laid off by Biden’s climate actions and the Americans who lost jobs due to the China virus much more difficult and dangerous. Despite China’s hostility and threats to cut off essential supplies, Biden is increasing our exposure to China’s hostile actions including allowing China to offer solutions for key parts of our electrical grid, on which the life of every American depends. On the campaign trail Biden promised a plan to quickly defeat the China virus; now he

reveals he can do no more than Trump was already doing…except for his plan to vaccinate terrorists in Guantanamo before vulnerable Americans. Reversing Trump’s priorities, Biden’s administration is sacrificing the well-being of middle and lower income Americans to benefit Washington special interests, his billionaire supporters, and leftist elites. Don Ewing Meredith, NH.

Reaction To Carter Story

To The Editor: Seeing the front page with ‘The Save America March - What I Witnessed’ (Weirs Times, January 14, 2021) was a sickening gut-punch. Tim Carter takes pictures of the three-percenters in Washington and calls them ‘patriots.’ This is a white-nationalist group well-known for racist hatemongering, is that his view of a patriot? Tim Carter says he ‘wanted to be able to say I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with those who made the pilgrimage to the altar of freedom.’ Most people would call storming police barricades, crushing officers, smashing down doors, and carrying paramilitary equipment into a building an assault, not a pilgrimage. What of the people who showed up in Washington? They were either trying to overturn an election or were sympathetic See MAILBOAT on 27

And young athletes are not at risk in the way that 85-yearold nursing home residents are. Sport participation is one issue. Classroom participation is another. A quick look at a recent newspaper photo figuratively took my breath away. It was an action girls’ basketball shot in which the players wore cloth masks. Knowing firsthand what a demanding aerobic activity basketball is, my heart went out to the poor hoopsters who had to suck in oxygen through those masks. Is it really necessary? I don’t know. Some say yes. Some say no. What would former college basketball player Anthony Fauci say? Fauci is chief medical advisor to President Biden and has been a mask proponent. Although I keep remembering him in the stands at a Washington Nationals game (where he threw out a first pitch) with his mask pulled down below his chin. At least the “powers that be” compromised on social distancing requirements for basketball games. Maintaining that six foot separation makes it hard to defend against jump shots. But at least some girls are playing. Concord High School’s ice hockey and wrestling teams recently suspended activities for two weeks due to “COVID-19 issues.” Are we being overprotective of these kiddos?

NH Audubon Needs Your Help With Statewide Bird Survey What’s happening with the birds this winter? W h i l e yo u ’r e a t home during the pandemic, you can have fun counting birds and helping N H Au d u b o n a t the same time. Take par t in the annual Backyard Winter Bird Survey o n S a t u r d a y, February 13, and Sunday, February 14. Biologists need assistance from citizens all over the Granite State to get a clear picture of what is happening with our winter birds. NH Audubon biologists are anxious to see what this year’s numbers show. “This winter we have seen an influx of visitors from the north,” said Dr. Pamela Hunt, Senior Biologist with NH Audubon. These are species such as Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins that nest in northern Canada and stay there when food supplies are good. In years with poor food crops, they move south for the winter in what’s called an “irruption.” “Sometimes we see lots of these northern species and other years we see none,” said Dr. Hunt. NH Audubon needs your help to track these northern invaders and other feeder birds. All New Hampshire residents are encouraged to take part. Anyone can participate in the Survey by counting the birds in their own backyard on the Survey weekend and reporting online or sending the results on a special reporting form to NH Audubon. To receive a copy of the reporting form and complete instructions, e-mail your name and address to bwbs@ nhaudubon.org or call 603-224-9909. Forms are also available on-line. Take Your Valentine To A Classic Silent Movie ‘7th Heaven’ (1927), a romantic drama that won actress Janet Gaynor the first-ever ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award, will be shown with live music on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall Theatre in Wilton, N.H. Live music will be provided by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based silent film accompanist. The screening is free to the public; a donation of $10 per person is suggested to support the Town Hall Theatre’s silent film series. The Town Hall Theatre continues to observe procedures to comply with all state and CDC public health guidelines. Capacity is limited to 50 percent; patrons are required to maintain social distance and wear masks until seated. 7th Heaven,’ which also netted Frank Borzage the first ‘Best Director’ Oscar, is a fable set in Paris just before World War I. It’s the story of an abused and abandoned young woman (Gaynor) who is cast aside by her family, only to be adopted by an ebullient sewer worker (Charles Farrell) with his sights set on higher things. In her new home, the girl learns a fresh way of looking at life. Eventually love blossoms—but will it survive the onset of war? Director Borzage used all the techniques of silent film at its height to craft a universal and timeless story that audiences have found moving since the picture’s first release in 1927, one year before the talkie revolution.

Summer Blockbusters Are Back! The Coronavirus has certainly taken its toll on the movie theatre industry, among other businesses, but there is hope with the vaccine that by Brendan Smith moviegoers will Weirs Times Editor soon be flocking back to the cinema this summer in anticipation of some of the biggest blockbusters in years. Of course, one of the biggest franchises will be hitting the big screen with not just one, but many new sequels which have already been produced but have been waiting for release once the crowds are back. Of course, I am talking about the “Captain Washington” franchise and I know I, for one, can’t wait. With a whole new cast of exciting characters to beef up the popular stories, we are all in for a treat. For those of you unfamiliar with the Captain Washington franchise, and shame on you if you are, here is a little background information on our hero to get you up to speed. Captain Washington was created when a mysterious radioactive cloud enveloped our nation’s capital and all that were engulfed in it were transformed into one giant behemoth who thought he, and he alone could save the country from all of its ills and faults. Given powers beyond anything of mortal men, including unlimited funding and no term limits, Captain Washington set on his quest to not only save America from actual problems, but also an satisfy his insatiable appetite for creating new dilemmas to solve since, like a shark, he has to constantly legislate or die. Things will kick off in June with the first, of what is sure to be, many big hits with “Captain

Washington and The Melting Earth.” In this blockbuster, Captain Washington finds himself battling against the nefarious Car Driving Man, who our hero is convinced is responsible for singehandedly causing the earth’s natural warming trends that have been going on since the beginning of time. Using his unique powers of over regulation and excessive taxes, Captain Washington uses all at his disposal to try and stop the evil doers. The climactic scene which pays tribute to Cervantes’ classic novel “Don Quixote” has Captain Washington, after being exposed to his kryptonite – cash from lobbyists – becoming more delusional than normal and believing giant windmills will save the earth. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but it is classic, and Greta Thunberg makes a cameo appearance. (That kid can act!) In July, “Captain Washington and The Illegal Alien” will open in theaters around the country. In this adventure, the country is overwhelmed by a giant being that continues to grow and deplete it of its natural resources. Captain Washington is summoned to try and save the day. The generals and lesser beings try to convince Captain Washington that only he, with his powers of unlimited funding, could use it to build a great wall to keep out the beast. But Captain Washington scoffs at the idea and, instead, uses that same power to continuously feed the beast hoping to appease it (and get its votes). A rough cut of the movie originally had a scene where a portion of the beast falls off and tries to enter the country by legal means, but it was taken out because of time restraints and also not wanting to give people any ideas. In August, “Captain Washington and The Incredible Shrinking Dollar” comes out. In this origin story, which is sure to be a classic, our hero, newly transformed by the giant radioactive cloud, is

entrusted with all of the funds of the United States Treasury. Before the mutation of Captain Washington, the power of the dollar had been used to bring prosperity to the country that wielded its power and make it the strongest country on earth. Now, Captain Washington, maddened by the effects of the radioactive cloud, lets this power overtake him and, in a dark moment, consumed by forces that, once unleashed, not even he will be able to stop, starts to use the dollar recklessly, funding absurd projects and ridiculous programs until the power of the dollar is basically extinguished. But Captain Washington, not seeing his own faults, believes that he can still use his other powers to save what he has wrought. Never believing that he is the cause, he continues to try and save the world in an endless and fruitless cycle. After this dark tale, audiences will be relieved in September to go the theaters to see a rather light-hearted romp in the Captain Washington series with “Captain Washington and the Summer Olympics.” In this change of pace, audiences will delight in this feel good story where Captain Washington decides to fund a group of male athletes to compete in the women’s divisions of the Summer Olympics games in Japan. Taking advantage of the newly installed “gender rules” for the summer games, America wins every single gold medal in every single women’s competition. The conquering heroes come home to receptions and parades around the country in a scene that will make your eyes water. (Of course, whether from joy or sadness will be up to you.) Of course, each movie ends with Captain America standing tall and exclaiming: “C’mon Man!” So, there you have it, it should be a summer of blockbuster fun.

Biden’s Department of Homeland Sleaze Chief Everything old is new again. The corruptocracy of the Obama administration is back with a vengeance in the White House. Once more, the “S” in “DHS” stands not for security -- but for sleaze. Our nation is back for sale to the highest foreign bidders and their “America last” cronies. Last Thursday, the Senate Homeland Security Committee pushed through the by Michelle Malkin nomination of Alejandro “Ali” Mayorkas Syndicated Columnist to head the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Six Senate Republicans sided with Democrats in breaking a GOP filibuster: Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, Rob Portman of Ohio, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, and Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Just call them the Senate GOP Traitors’ Caucus. “Inclement weather” forced the postponement of the full and final Senate vote scheduled Monday, but the swamp always gets its way come rain, shine, sleet or snow. Seven years ago, I first raised alarms when Barack Obama’s shady Chicago crony Mayorkas was tapped for the No. 2 position at DHS. Feckless Senate Republicans surrendered then, as they will again now. Mayorkas’ main qualification for the deputy DHS secretary slot was his glorious record of achievement as a top Obama presidential campaign fundraiser in 2008. “Obama bundler” bestowed the same magical powers of access for Ali Mayorkas as “Open, sesame!” did for Ali Baba. Mayorkas will fit right in under the rein of Quid Pro Joe. As I reported during Mayorkas’ 2013 confirmation hearings, Mayorkas phoned the Clinton White House while U.S. attorney on behalf of convicted drug dealer Carlos Vignali. Mayorkas joined other high-profile California liberals in the dialing-forpardons campaign. Vignali’s father (also suspected of drug trafficking) had dumped $200,000 in the coffers of Hillary Clinton’s brother, Hugh, to secure his son’s commutation. Naturally, Mayorkas pleaded ignorance of Vignali senior’s suspected criminal activity and admitted failure to do his “due diligence.” Mayorkas’ pardongate “mistake” cost him nothing. Like so many slimy swamp creatures in Washington, he has repeatedly failed upward by design, not accident. As the former head of Obama/Biden’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency, allegations of fraud, reckless rubber-stamping and lax enforcement -- from veteran internal whistleblowers --plagued See MALKIN on 28

The Inequality of ‘Equity’ President Joe Biden took office pledging a return to unity and decency. A new era of good feelings is at hand, we were informed by both his administration and its sycophants in the media. A new world -- a by Ben Shapiro world of “equity” -- is at Syndicated Columnist hand. Equity, you see, is the word of the day. Not equality -- that would be a traditionally American concept. The Declaration of Independence declares that “all men are created equal ... endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” The 14th Amendment to the Constitution provides that all citizens must receive “equal protection of the laws.” Equality, in the traditional understanding, means something simple and easy to implement: the protection of the rights of all individuals, along with the invasion of none of those rights. Equity means something different. The two words are separated by one syllable -but that syllable represents the difference between justice and injustice, rights and infringements, individualism and tribalism. Equity, in the common political parlance, means that each group should receive the same outcome as every other group. Ibram X. Kendi, the chief expositor of the new Democratic “racial equity” theory, explains that “Racial equity is when two or more racial groups are standing on a relatively equal footing.” Because race is a social construct, says Kendi, the chief indicator that two races are on unequal footing can be found not in proof of differential treatment by race but in differential outcome by race. To prove racial inequity, therefore, one need not show animus or discriminatory policy. All one must show is unequal outcome. Kendi explains in his massive bestseller, “How to Be an Antiracist”: “A racist policy is any measure that produces or sustains racial inequity between racial groups. An antiracist policy is any measure that

produces or sustains racial equity between racial groups.” And, says Kendi, “There is no such thing as a nonracist or race-neutral policy.” All policies either forward equity or oppose it. Any policy not explicitly designed to rectify unequal outcome is therefore racist. This philosophy is both idiotic and perverse. It’s idiotic because all human groupings -- literally all of them -- will result in differential outcomes. Draw a line down the middle of any room in random fashion and the result will be unequal income distribution, criminal records, educational histories. When culture takes a hand, disparities can be more deeply rooted than random chance. Discrimination would still not be the cause of such disparity. As a basic logical matter, discrimination is not the cause of all disparity. This philosophy is perverse because it attributes malice to those who have none; it fosters policy that actively discriminates, supposedly in order to alleviate unproven discrimination. Kendi himself explains: “The defining question is whether the discrimination is creating equity or inequity. If discrimination is creating equity, then it is antiracist. If discrimination is creating inequity, then it is racist.” Unfortunately, this idiotic and perverse philosophy has become the root of Biden administration policymaking. “Equity” has been used as the keyword from environmental to economic to COVID-19 policy. Susan Rice, Biden’s domestic policy adviser, explained this week, “(W)e’re focused on racial justice and equity...It’s for everybody who has not had the benefits of a system that has not served everybody. ... This is not about serving one group to the detriment of another.” This, of course, is a lie. It is utterly about group equality, which requires individual injustice. America was rooted in equality and freedom. Equity requires freedom to be curbed. It’s therefore a national tragedy to watch equality of rights abandoned in favor of equity. If freedom is discarded to achieve equality of outSee SHAPIRO on 28

Real Socialism People hate America’s big disparities in wealth. It’s a reason why, among young people, socialism is as popular as capitalism. The Democratic by John Stossel Socialists of AmerSyndicated Columnist ica want a country based on “freedom, equality and solidarity.” That sure sounds good. But does socialism bring that? My new video debunks several myths about socialism. One reason for socialism’s continued appeal is linguist Noam Chom-

sky. For generations, his work has taught students that capitalism is “a grotesque catastrophe.” I assumed the fall of the Soviet Union would put an end to such misinformation. It did -- for about a month. But since then, the lust for socialism has come back strong. Today, Chomsky says that the Soviet Union “was about as remote from socialism as you could imagine.” “Absurd!” responds economist Ben Powell, author of “Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World.” When the Soviets made private businesses illegal, says Powell,

“that’s about as close as the world ever saw” to pure socialism. Now that the Soviet Union is gone, MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi says, “there is no true socialist country that exists.” No? What about Cuba, China, North Korea, Vietnam and Venezuela? Velshi didn’t respond when we asked him. Venezuela was once Latin America’s richest country. Now it’s the poorest. Many in the media claim that its fall has “nothing to do with socialism,” just “poor governance.” John Oliver says, “Chavez’s programs could have been sustainable

if he pursued a sound economic policy.” “Yeah,” laughs Powell. “Sustainable if he had a sound economic policy called capitalism.” I push back. “Why does it have to be capitalism?” Why not socialism without bad management? “That’s the nature of socialism!” Powell replies. “Their economic policies fail to adjust to reality because economic reality evolves every day. It’s millions of decentralized entrepreneurs and consumers making fine-tuning adjustments.” Powell notes that in our capitalist society, when COVID-19 hit, See STOSSEL on 27

Beijing’s Hand Behind Burma Military Coup? Burma’s military coup d’etat overthrowing the democratically elected government has provided the stage for a new morality by John J. Metzler play in Southeast Syndicated Columnist Asia. We already know the players. On the one side we see the seemingly virtuous young democracy led by a Nobel Peace Prize laureate being pushed aside by the powerful and corrupt Burmese military. Then there’s the International community, Britain, the United States and the European Union who quickly condemn the coup makers and demand a return to democracy. Additionally, the

neighboring Southeast Asian nations, notably Thailand (with its own military junta), who basically shrug. But the crescendo quickly builds when the UN Security Council with the United Kingdom at the helm, tries to mobilize a powerful condemnation of the military power grab, only to find that key veto holding members, especially China and Russia, provide diplomatic cover for Burma’s aka Myanmar’s military. Surprised? UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemns the military coup calling it “totally unacceptable.” Christine Schraner Burgener, the UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, addresses ambassadors, “I strongly condemn the recent steps

taken by the military and urge all of you to collectively send a clear signal in support of democracy in Myanmar.” So all the players have assumed their traditional places; the West most especially Britain, the former colonial power, and the U.S. in defending democracy and threatening sanctions. The People’s Republic of China, the regime’s longtime patron, protecting its client state, and the long suffering Burmese people, on the losing end once again. Sadly military rule, direct or indirect, has been part of the Burmese political fabric since 1962. The current coup only reinforces the obvious; that democratic institutions have failed to take root deep enough in Burma’s rich soil, while the military, through the cohesive-

I Heart Valentine’s Day by Angela Shelf Medearis The Kitchen Diva

Is chocolate a guilty treat or a great-tasting, hearthealthy indulgence? Do you use chocolate to boost your mood, or reserve it for special celebrations? Chocolate has been considered an aphrodisiac food since the time of Aztecs. It’s said to contain a substance that inflames desire and makes the beloved one more open to romance. Whatever your reason for choosing chocolate, emerging research shows there may be some health benefits to consuming certain types of chocolate. This is wonderful news for chocolate lovers and for anyone who enjoys celebrating Valentine’s Day! Unsweetened cocoa and dark chocolate

appear to be healthier choices than other kinds of chocolate. Dark chocolate also is a delicious, hearthealthy choice for Valentine’s Day. Blood pressure, cardiovascular health and insulin sensitivity have all been shown to improve from the fla-

vonoids in the cocoa bean. Other research suggests that eating chocolate makes us feel good -- something self-professed chocoholics already know. Chocolate helps reduce stress and has other positive, moodboosting psychological effects. Chocolate also may be connected to neurotransmitters boosting mood and lowering anxiety. Research is still preliminary, so nutrition experts don’t recommend eating chocolate for those health benefits alone, but the research is something chocolate lovers will watch. So how much dark chocolate or unsweetened cocoa powder is the potential ticket to good health? None of the studies to date

have determined the optimal daily serving. Many health experts are comfortable recommending daily dark chocolate in small amounts -- an ounce or two daily -- if it’s a food you already enjoy and can afford it in your calorie budget. Making chocolate milk with unsweetened cocoa powder (containing 82% cocoa) stirred into skim milk and sweetened with stevia -- as opposed to the highly processed and sugar-sweetened version typically found on supermarket shelves -is a healthy choice. In one study, chocolate-milk drinkers who used the healthy drink recipe showed marked improvement in heart health, inSee HEART on 9

HEART from 8 cluding a boost to the “good” HDL cholesterol. Not all chocolate is created equal: The higher the cocoa content, the greater the health benefits from flavonoids, which help protect against aging and some chronic diseases. Following unsweetened cocoa powder on the list for highest percentage of cocoa is unsweetened baking chocolate and dark chocolate. Studies suggest that eating dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa improves cardiovascular health. Semisweet chocolate and milk chocolate are lower in cocoa content. A final word of caution: check the ingredients label to see where sugar is listed. The further down the list the better, because that indicates a smaller amount of sugar. Weigh the extra calories in chocolate before you spend them -- and then enjoy every morsel! Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA. Every attempt is made to express thoughts according to statements made by God in the Bible. It is written so that we may remain one Nation under God by always following His will, in order to continue to enjoy His blessings of individual and national life that only He, the source of life, can give.

world history, you dedicated your national existence on the Mayflower ship to know and serve me and to trust in my Son, Jesus, whom I gave as your Savior. I know you have never been perfect but as you have grown more and more wealthy, as a result of my blessings, you’ve walked farther and farther away from me. You have done what Israel, and other nations, did when they forgot me, and made themselves God and as a result followed other god’s that were never God (Isaiah 53:6). Doing this, they began to live in ways that were contrary to my ways and will (Isaiah 65:2). You must understand that because I am God, I am the source of life. Walking away from me may appear to be insignificant but it robs you of the blessings of life, only I can give.

When an airplane loses fuel at 35,000 feet it is still flying but it begins a slow and certain descent that always ends badly. To the passengers, the descent may be imperceptible, but the results are always the s a m e (Deuteronomy 8:19). So, I write to try and stimulate you to wake up and recognize you are not God. To understand that it is only the Nation that exalts me as God, that will be blessed (Psalm 33:12). To ask you to consider coming back to me, forsaking your foolish ways, and building your national existence on my resources that will restore you and cause you to flourish as you face your future (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). I look forward to more conversations in the days ahead. Please keep your mind and heart open to me and my word. I remind you that one day each

Do you realize that I made you? NH Teams Win Two Awards In Birding Competition CONCORD – NH Audubon’s “Twitcher” Teams had a successful Semi-Superbowl of Birding on January 30, 2021. Despite a cold day with wind chills as low of -5 degrees, the team “Birding With Impunity” in Rye took home the coveted Rockingham County Award for the most points in the county and the “Townie Solitaire” won the Townie Award for the most species in a town. The Superbowl competition involves looking for as many bird species as possible in 12 hours and is run by Massachusetts Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center. Teams can compete in Essex County, MA and/or Rockingham County, NH in various categories. Each species has a point value with the rare species worth more points than common ones. Because of COVID rules, the “Twitchers” had to split up into three teams this year, each competing in a different town: Rye, Hampton, and Seabrook. There were 21 teams in the competition, ten competing for the Townie Award. “It was great to have so much competition this year,” said Becky Suomala, the “Townie Solitaire” (aka The Lone Twitcher). Temperatures started out at a very chilly 8 degrees at the 5am start. “The wind wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be,” said Pam Hunt of “Birding With Impunity.” The relative calm meant good con-

Becky Suomala was thrilled to find four owl species. “I was so excited to hear a Great Horned Owl at my first stop,” said Suomala. “It’s great to get just one owl on the Superbowl, but to have four was a thrill.” The “Twitch-n-Dip” team in Hampton and the “Townie Solitaire” in Seabrook saw the same Snowy Owl that perched where they could both see it from either side of the town line. “Birding With Impunity” had three rare five-point species, and received the threepoint bonus on two of them for being the first to call in that species, boosting their point total. “I had 64 species, one more than Pam,” said Suomala,

“but she had more points than I did.” The three teams combined had 83 species, six of which were new for the Twitchers since they started in 2009. “It was so interesting to see how the three Twitcher teams did on the coast and then compare that to the inland town competitors,” said Suomala. “We all had a great time!” The Twitchers also raise money to support two NH Audubon programs, New Hampshire Bird Records and NHeBird. The full story of their adventures will be on the web site with past years’ results: https://nhbirdrecords.org. Founded in 1914, NH Audubon’s mission is to protect New Hampshire’s natural

environment for wildlife and for people. It is an independent statewide membership organization with four nature centers throughout the state. Expert educators give programs to children, families, and adults at centers and in schools. Staff biologists and volunteers conduct bird conservation efforts such as the Peregrine Falcon restoration. NH Audubon protects thousands of acres of wildlife habitat and is a voice for sound public policy on environmental issues. New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Birdwatching In The Snow by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

The junco sat perfectly still in the bush as snow collected on his back. The snow came down hard and the wind whipped it around. It was the wind that kept the junco motionless in the bush. When the wind offered a rare break, the junco darted to the nearby bird feeder to grab a few sunflower seeds. He would fly back to his spot in the bush, having shaken off the snow that had collected on him. It didn’t take long for new snow to accumulate on his dark gray feathers. Snowy days are among the best times to watch the feeders. It is interesting to see how little the elements affect the birds. Tiny birds such as chickadees can withstand extremely cold and windy conditions. They have a variety of mechanisms to protect them from the harsh elements. I have written about those in previous columns and may revisit that topic in the future. But for now, I’m going to focus on this past storm that hit New England and recall the many birds that visited. The junco I mentioned before was one of more than a dozen juncos that were around that day. Other sparrows included white-throated,

Snow gathers on a junco’s plumage during the recent snowstorm. song and house. Many people don’t think of juncos as being a sparrow because of their different coloration, but they are indeed members of the sparrow family. Both nuthatches came and went throughout the day. It is such a thrill to see the red-breasted nuthatches daily this winter. Not that I don’t appreciate the white-breasted nuthatches, but they are much more common and year-round birds where I am. The red-breasted nuthatch shows up only in random years. Of course, chickadees and titmice were regular visitors. A pair of Carolina wrens entertained me as well. I always like watching their antics in the

yard, especially when they make their unique chatter calls outside the window. It was a heck of a snowstorm — the worst in several years where I am anyway. Will there be more opportunities this winter to watch the birds at the feeder in the snow? That remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t be surprised in the least. In fact, I would be very surprised if we didn’t have more snowfalls. This is New England, after all, and winter is a way of life here. Thirty years ago, the only way I knew how to ice fish was to walk out onto the ice, drill some holes (or chisel them), set some tip ups, and wait. The idea was that the fish came to you and if you didn’t catch anything, it was because the fish were just not biting. On days when the fish weren’t active, we didn’t catch much. The modern ice fishing revolution has changed that. Efficiency and mobility are becoming commonplace words used throughout the ice belt. Today’s ice anglers have a plethora of tools and techniques specifically designed to make ice fishing more productive. The longer that sunlight has been blocked by snow cover and ice thickness, the more the weeds will die off. This will cause fish to move deeper to find more oxygenated water, but early in the season fish can almost always be found in the weeds. Drill holes in the same manner that you would cast a line in open water: cast a lot and don’t cast in the same spot if there are no fish there. With ice fishing this means drilling more holes, but it’s usually worth it. Having the right tool for the job is crucial. Electronics have changed the way

Estate Planning for Blended Families

If you’re in a blended family, you’re already aware of the emotional and financial issues involved in your daily life. But what about the future? When it’s time to do your estate planning – and it’s never too soon for that – you’ll need to be aware of the entanglements and complexities that can get in the way of your vision for leaving the legacy you desire.

You can take comfort in knowing that you’re far from alone. More than half of married or cohabiting couples with at least one living parent, or parent-in-law, and at least one adult child, have a “step-kin” relationship, according to a study from researchers at the University of Massachusetts and other schools. That’s a lot of estate-planning issues. Nonetheless, the task does not have to be overwhelming – as long as you put sufficient time and thought into it. Here are some ideas that may help: • Seek fairness – but be flexible. Even in a nonblended family, it’s not always easy to be as equitable as you’d like in your estate plans – too often, someone feels they have been treated unfairly. In a blended family, these problems can be exacerbated: Will biological children feel cheated? Will stepchildren? Keep this in mind: Fair is not always equal – and equal is not always fair. When deciding how to divide your assets, you’ll need to make some judgment calls after carefully evaluating the needs of all your family members. There’s no guarantee that everyone will be satisfied, but you’ll have done your best. • Communicate your wishes clearly. When it comes to estate planning, the best surprise is no surprise – and that’s especially true in a blended family. Even if you’re the one creating your estate plans, try to involve

other family members – and make your wishes and goals clear. You don’t have to be specific down to the last dollar, but you should provide a pretty good overall outline. • Consider establishing a revocable living trust. Everyone’s situation is different, but many blended families find that, when making estate plans, a simple will is not enough. Consequently, you may want to establish a revocable living trust, which gives you much more control than a will when it comes to carrying out your wishes. Plus, because you have transferred your assets to the trust, you are no longer technically the owner of these assets, so there’s no reason for a court to get involved, which means your estate can likely avoid the time-consuming, expensive and very public process of probate. • Choose the right trustee. If you do set up a living trust, you’ll also need to name a trustee – someone who manages the assets in the trust. Married couples often serve as co-trustees, but this can result in tensions and disagreements. As an alternative, you can hire a professional trustee – someone with the time, experience and neutrality to make appropriate decisions and who can bring new ideas to the process. Above all else, make sure you have the right estate-planning team in place. You’ll certainly need to work with an attorney, and you may also want to bring in your tax advisor and financial professional. Estate planning can be complex – especially with a blended family – and you’ll want to make the right moves, right from the start. but the focus should be on the fun. you don’t find these techniques to be more fun, then stick with what you know. Whatever you do, keep it fun. After all, isn’t that why we are there? Most importantly, be safe. Early in the season, make sure you check the ice thickness everywhere you go. Don’t ever assume the ice is the same thickness everywhere because it’s not. Have fun and we’ll see you on the ice.

With fishing, mouse traps come in many shapes and sizes...and price tags. MOORE from 15 biters. Efficiency is another key to being more productive. Efficiency can come in the form of appropriate clothing or not bringing things you don’t need. Being cold makes fishing harder, which in turn will make you cut corners. Cutting corners will decrease your productivity.

When I’m on the ice I wear the Ascent Suit from Ice Armor by Clam. The Ascent Suit is specifically designed for ice fishing and has added buoyancy that will keep me safe, warm, and dry in any weather. The less time I spend trying to stay comfortable, the more time I can spend fishing.

In addition to being comfortable, try to be as efficient with gear as possible. When you use a piece of gear, put it back where it belongs. Then, if you want to move, it takes almost no effort. Sometimes being able to move quickly and effortlessly is the difference between moving or not moving, which can be

the difference between catching and not catching.

Catching more fish makes ice fishing more fun for many anglers,

SMITH from 1 called “World Missions in Review.” The churchrelated college began as Nyack Missionary College and continued its mission emphasis through the years, including the event at Carnegie Hall at which I served as an usher. But this article is about Abraham Lincoln as a neighbor as described by a New Hampshire man in an article published in February 1918 in The American Review of Reviews magazine. The man was Dr. Philip W. Ayres who was a forester of the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests and whose mother’s family lived opposite the home of Abe Lincoln and his family in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Ayres asked his mother, Mrs. E.J. Ayres, whose maiden name was Ardelia Wheelock, what it was like to be Abraham Lincoln’s

Currier and Ives print of Abe and Mary Lincoln with sons Robert and Thaddeus. neighbor. Perhaps the statement that best answered the question as to what kind of a

neighbor Lincoln was is “Lincoln always took a thoroughly kind and human interest in all

his neighbors.” But this wasn’t the young Lincoln who lived in a log cabin and split

logs into fence rails. This was the Lincoln who was fifty years of age and regarded as a well-to-do lawyer and politician who had served in the state legislature and a term in the House of Representatives in Washington. His neighbors recognized that a great man lived among them on Eighth Street in Springfield. Ayres’ mother recalled the frequent walks down the street of a serious looking Lincoln being pulled along by the hands his young boys, Willie and Tad. Tad would often be brought home on his Dad’s shoulders. Mrs. Lincoln seemed to be the greater disciplinarian, on one occasion telling the boys that they could not attend the reception that was being held at the home of neighbors, but would stay at home under the care of their older brother, Robert. The younger boys were kicking and screaming in protest when Mr. Lin-

coln entered the room. He said, “This will never do. Mary, if you will let the boys go, I will take care of them.” Mary Lincoln still insisted that the party was no place for children to be, but her husband told her that he would take the boys around the back way and they could stay in the kitchen. So the future President went ahead with the boys and Mary with son Robert followed after. Mr. Lincoln did not take the boys to the kitchen, however, but allowed them to join the full party. When Abe Lincoln would return to Springfield from a trip he would not fail to stop in at Dr. Ayres’ grandfather’s for a chat. Solomon Wheelock and Mr. Lincoln would sit on the edge of the porch and talk about politics. There were many political gatherings at the Lincoln household and Mary Lincoln, said to be “a lady of refined tastes,” carried out the social responsibilities of those political meetings. Dr. Ayres’ mother, then a teenage girl, was frequently asked to help in serving the refreshments. Lincoln called her his little friend “Delie.” The Lincolns attended the Presbyterian church, but one of their neighbors and friends was Dr. N.W. Miner, the Baptist minister who a few years later would help Mrs. Lincoln receive a needed pension from Congress. After Abraham Lincoln was elected to be President of the United States some political friends, including Mr. Seward, reportedly came to Springfield from Chicago to celebrate with him, bringing their own wines with them. Mary Lincoln and sons Willie and Tad from the American Review of Reviews, Feb. 1918. SMITH from 24 with wine, he said, “No, boys, water has been good enough so far,” and “he drank to their health in cold water.” Ardelia Wheelock was apparently a frequent guest in the Lincoln household and found that, as Mary Lincoln was a help to her husband in his political pursuits, he would help her at times with the household chores. He would come home from the office, take off his coat, put on a large blue apron, and do whatever was needed to do in the kitchen. Concerning meals, Mr. Ayres wrote of Lincoln, “To him the matter of food was always one of comparative indifference. When called to meals he came when he was ready, and seemed never just ready to come.” Many years have past since I learned that Lincoln’s birthday, Washington’s birthday, and Valentine’s Day, along with Groundhog’s Day

were the most important days in February, and I hope that today’s elementary school teachers still mention the birthdays without trying to tarnish their memories. And I hope that as the newer holiday, Presidents’ Day, arrives this year that they will say some good things about our past Presidents without comparing them or trying to rate them from best to worst. It was in February of the year 1861 when Abraham Lincoln left his home in Springfield, Illinois by train to take on the presidency in Washington, D.C. It was raining very hard, but before the train began its journey Lincoln appeared at the rear platform of the train for a short farewell speech. This is what he said to his friends and neighbors: “My friends, no one not in my situation can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting. To this place,

Lincoln home on 8th Street in Springfield, Illinois. and the kindness of this people I owe everything. Here I have lived a quarter of a century and have passed from a young man to an old man. Here my children have been born, and

one of them is buried. I now leave, not knowing when or whether ever I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington. Without the assistance of that

Divine Being who ever attended him I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him who can go with me and remain with you, and be everywhere for good,

let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope your prayers will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.”

The Art Place will be requiring masks to be worn and physical distancing when inside. Masks are available at the store. Also, store capacity may be limited. Owner of The Art Place Barbara Gibbs says, “Peter’s paintings have a timeless beauty and a sense of familiarity.” She continues “the paintings that we are presently framing for the show depict the natural beauty of this area. They are quite

The Art Place has been exhibiting Peter Ferber’s artwork since 1992 and have had gallery shows for him for over 20 years. More than 100 reproductions of his work have been made, including over 75 limited edition prints. Here are a few musings from artist Peter Ferber about this show: “My explorations for this show took me to places I’d never painted before. It’s hard to believe that with my whole life on the lake, that there are still newold things to see. Got into some coves I’d never been to and found the interesting habita-

Peter Ferber.

tion of Harvard Island. Is that the only Ivy League island on the Lake? Also found some simple, but wonderful boat houses that have great stories to tell. Then I ventured by land to the quintessential cliché of New Hampshire landscapes–Mt. Chocorua. I may be one of the few artists who’s never painted that picture-postcard view, so I think I’m allowed one crack at it! I was noticing the sun rising on the Belknaps one morning, and then, out the blue, thought, “I bet Mt. Chocorua would be striking in this light.” So I got up there before dawn one fall day and found rich images to work with. This resulted in a large oil where I called on inspiration from the White Mountain and Hudson River schools to make up my pallet. While I have many oth-

ers to complete still, this will probably be the signature piece in the show. There will also be some smaller lake vignettes, and a couple of classic New England images that always draw me in with a warm feeling of being “home”. And, yes, there will be a cut-paper piece of a familiar Wolfeboro landmark. I hope these will warm your February and turn your thoughts a few months ahead to another wonderful summer to come!” The Art Place has been serving the Lakes Region since 1975 with fine art and custom framing. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, February 11, 2021 — METZLER from 7 ily suppressed by the military, the hopeful 2007 Saffron Revolution led by Buddhist monks, and finally the political power sharing agreements between the Generals and Aung San Suu Kyi’s new government in 2015. Elections in November 2020, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide, jolted the Generals. On the day the new parliament was set to meet in the Disney-like faux capital Naypyidaw, the tanks rolled in. Aung San Suu Kyi, has been smooth as silk with the foreign press; I recall her UN visit a few years back when she evoked the Angel of Democracy. Back home she’s known as “Mother Suu” to the Burmese ethnic majority. But millions of Burmese have become disenchanted by her NLD’s political incompetence and vindictiveness as well as her government’s politely looking the other way to ethnic persecution. Burma, a resource rich Southeast Asian state of 54 million people borders China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh. It’s strategically located on the Bay of Bengal. Yet part of Burma’s original sin, and this includes the once sainted Aung San Suu Kyi, has been to run a hyper-nationalist Buddhist state at the expense of the country’s other ethnic and religious groups; Christians and Muslims. Though Burma’s democratization has been rightly lauded for a decade, the ongoing tragedy of nearly one million Rohingya Muslims forced from the country into neighboring Bangladesh re-

mains cynically overlooked. So too has been the tragedy of Christian persecution of the Shan and Karen peoples in the north. While Beijing has historically overplayed its hand in neighboring Burma, causing backlash even from an often collaborationist socialist regime, the fact stands that China’s political and economic power remains the central force to be reckoned with. It’s all about Belt and Road, expanding the deep water port of Kyaukphyu, being the primary arms merchant for the military, and holding the majority of foreign investments. Add rackets, gambling, and human trafficking in this pivotal country, and China’s calculation becomes clear. Just weeks before the recent coup, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with key Myanmar officials, offering support for the military’s “deserved role in the course of national transformation and development.” Will any sanctions by the Biden Administration now push Burma’s Generals totally back into Beijing’s arms? STOSSEL from 7 businesses quickly adjusted. Restaurants switched to takeout and delivery. They built outdoor patios with heat lamps. Supermarkets opened early so the elderly could shop with less risk. Alcohol companies started producing hand sanitizer. Ford used its 3D printers to make face masks. The media whined about “lack of federal direction,” but no central authority could direct all those individual adjustments in thousands of different places. In fact, federal direction would have prevented it. “In a socialist economy, you get a one-sizefits-all adjustment,” adds Powell. “You miss out on this learning process where entrepreneurs copy others when they see things successful and stop doing it when it’s not.” By contrast, “In a market economy, everybody’s little adjustments get tested, and we get to see what works.” In America, Blockbuster video was a great success. But then Netflix offered something better -- no driving to a store, no late fees. Because Blockbuster didn’t immediately adjust, it went bankrupt. “In a socialist economy, every adjustment needs to be commanded,” says Powell. “Communicate it down and get everybody to do the right thing. That’s impossible.” That’s why under socialism, shortages are routine. In Venezuela, there’s so little food for sale that Venezuelans have lost weight. Yet, “journalists” at Vox produced a video titled, “The Collapse of Venezuela, Explained,” without mentioning socialism even once. Vox’s explanation for

Venezuela’s fall: “Oil prices plummeted.” “The oil price is a complete distraction,” says an exasperated Powell. “There’s plenty of countries that depend on oil revenue. When oil prices went down, people there didn’t start losing weight. That just happened in Venezuela.” Some claim Venezuela and Cuba’s people struggle mainly because of America’s economic sanctions and embargo. “They certainly don’t help the people,” says Powell, “but it’s an afterthought as a reason for their suffering.” The U.S. only sanctioned a few Venezuelan officials and their operations -- not the country as a whole. In Cuba, Powell points out: “They drive around 1950s U.S. cars ... but there’s no U.S. Navy destroyers prevent Kia, Fiat and whoever else around the world from sending them cars. The reason for their suffering is they have an economic system that can’t deliver.” Socialism delivers misery. Next week, three more myths about socialism.

MAILBOAT from 2 to overturning an election which their guy lost, is that a patriot? Sounds like a sore loser to me. Think about these ‘patriots.’ Rather than believe that Trump lost, you’d have to believe that judges, governors, legislators, thousands of poll-watchers and election workers, the intelligence agencies of the United States, Trump’s Attorney General, and Trump’s hand-picked election security officer were either duped by or in on a cabal hell-bent on improving the environment and the lot of the most down-trodden of society. And what of your publication? If you believe these ‘patriots’ are correct, why don’t you publish evidence to back up their claims? How many editorials or articles have you run about the peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters? Keep in mind that the Black Lives Matter protesters can show you the videos of blacks being choked and shot in the back. Keep in mind that the

only people to die in a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020 were shot by a white-supremacist. What can the ‘Trump won’ crowd point to? The delusions of a man who is well-known as someone who demonstrably lies, then doublesdown and fights rather than admit he’s wrong. Does the Weirs Times feel any commitment to relevancy or accuracy? Does the Weirs Times believe in the concept of a democratic election, or is that belief only held when the Weirs Times likes the results? Is it really in ‘the interests of Lake Winnipesaukee and vicinity’ to give credence to conspiracy theories that make “The DaVinci Code” look like a documentary? Does the Weirs Times feel any sense of responsibility to the overall tranquility of the region, or does it simply want to throw fuel on the fire that burns a division between our country? MALKIN from 6 Mayorkas’ tenure. Senate Republicans went along with his appointment to the DHS No. 2 slot even though he had been under investigation for his role as a meddling fixer in foreign EB-5 visas-for-sale schemes for 15 months before that nomination. Federal investigators interviewed more than 15 whistleblowers ranging from rank-andfile employees to several senior managers in California and at the D.C. headquarters who accused Mayorkas of bestowing preferential access and treatment to politically connected EB-5 applicants and stakeholders. They detailed how Mayorkas “created special processes and revised existing policies in the EB-5 program to accommodate specific

parties” while serving as director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. “Their allegations were unequivocal,” the DHS inspector general concluded, and the corruption under Mayorkas was systemic. Reminder: then-Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid pressured Mayorkas to overturn his agency’s rejection of expedited EB-5 visa applications for Chinese investors in a Las Vegas casino hotel, which just happened to be represented by Reid’s lawyer son Rory. Adjudicators balked at the preferential treatment. Mayorkas steamrolled the dissenters, who reported on shouting matches over the cases. Reid’s staffers received special briefings from Mayorkas to update

lobbied for approval of the project. McAuliffe whined to then-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano when the department’s adjudicators rejected the GreenTech deal. In violation of recordkeeping and disclosure rules, Mayorkas met with McAuliffe in February 2011 and then met personally with senior staff to urge the agency to reverse its denials. It did. In 2018, GreenTech filed for bankruptcy after raking in some $141 million from 283 EB-5 investors -- mostly from China. Nobody knows where all that money went. More than 25 questions asked by GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley about Mayorkas’ EB-5 interventions remain unanswered five years after the inspector general report

lambasted his ethical breaches as “corrosive and destabilizing.” Perhaps Joe Biden will appoint ChiCom tool Hunter Biden as the next DHS inspector general to guard the DHS sleazehouse -- with the Senate GOP Traitor Caucus standing by to facilitate the uniparty’s sellout of America.
