No Good Presidential Candidates To The Editor: President Trump continued the economic recovery and reinvigorated our military with increases in defense spending. Conversely, he weakened environmental regulations; moved funds from military construction projects to fund the border wall; and hurt our standing in the world, including our relationship with friendly countries. Trump continually lies about events and policies, and demeans the Presidency with his derogatory comments and gutterly uncivilized language. He garners attention with his negativity. Trump has weakened our national security by attacking the FBI and intelligence agencies. These attacks are launched when he personally disagrees with the findings of the agencies. I don’t see any viable Democratic presidential candidates. Sanders, a Socialist, and Warren, a fake Indian; hold radical views supported by leftists in their party. Buttigieg is a former small city mayor with no national experience, and he showed poor judgement when he declared victory in the Iowa caucuses before the official results were in. Klobuchar cannot generate a national following. Steyer and Bloomberg are looked down upon for trying to buy the election. And Biden, who is highly qualified to be president, is aging. Some of them are running to garner name recognition for other races. We need Independents to run

for President to represent Independents across the country. Donald Moskowitz Londonderry NH

Current Board Doing Fine

To The Editor: The cliche is an old one, but it applies to our upcoming municipal election in Belmont. Normally, change and turnover in public office is a good thing, but sometimes it’s best to leave a team that is working well as it is. I felt compelled to speak at the end of a recent Deliberative Session about what a pleasure it is to volunteer and work on community projects in Belmont and how lucky I feel to live here. Our current Board of Selectmen and Town officials are supportive, encouraging and obviously have the best interests of our town in mind. They work well together as a team and with our citizens and that success has saved us tax money, spurred efficiency and generated continuing improvements in our community. It is quite unusual for a governing body to actually keep the municipal budget fairly level in a NH community. The Board of Selectmen in Belmont have worked hard as a team to accomplish this. They attend to the business of running our town amicably and cooperatively -- and it works. I urge the voters to re-elect Sonny Patten as Selectman and keep the team working together harmoniously and effectively. Our current Board of Ruth Mooney,

“Sonny” Patten and Jon Pike is doing just fine. “It ain’t broke” and we don’t need to fix it. Please cast your vote for Claude “Sonny” Patten, Jr. as Belmont Selectman. Thanks, and Please Do Vote -however you vote -- on both the School District and Town ballot issues on March 10th at Belmont High School. It is a right won for us at great sacrifice and a duty that should be exercised and not shirked. If you don’t bother to vote, don’t bother to complain. Woody Fogg Belmont, NH.

Fort William Henry was built by the English at the southern end of Lake George in New York State during the French and Indian War. The French had a fort at the other end of the Lake and at that time there was a struggle to gain control of Canada by the two countries from across the ocean. Among those stationed at the fort which was built in 1755, or during the Colonial period in America, were companies from New Hampshire’s Robert’s Rangers. One of those companies was led by Derryfield (later Manchester), New Hampshire’s John Stark. Stark was one of our state’s military heroes who lived his entire life as a New Hampshire resident and who, when not serving in the military, was a farmer. He is probably best known for his heroics at the battle of Bennington during the Revolutionary

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Really Bad Virus You’ve seen it on the news. It has been getting coverage 24/7. It has a lot of folks concerned, while others claim it is nothing to by Brendan Smith worry about. Weirs Times Editor We are told to just go about our day to day business as usual and not to worry about it. But that is hard to do when the cable news networks and even the local newscasts, are talking about it ad nauseam. There was a similar outbreak four years ago, but it was a different strain with possible different effects. Still, even that one had no known cure, but we all survived it anyway. Some of us feeling even better than before and others feeling worse. Yes, another outbreak of Politivirus is here in full force and everyone is on edge since the odds are very high, especially in this day and age, that you will catch it. Still, if you are vigilant and cautious during your day to day routine, there are ways that you can avoid it, or at least, if you get it, not let it take down your immune system. The CPVC (Center For Politivirus Control) has a list of guidelines you can follow to help you avoid it as much as possible. First off, stay at least ten feet away from anyone who has it. But how do you know they have it? Easy. Unlike most other viruses that can take days or weeks to show symptoms, Politivirus will show symptoms almost immediately. They can start small, but if you know what you are looking for, they are easy to spot. An infected person will often start with small, negative comments about one political candidate or another. They are not too dangerous at this point, but now you know to stay

back. Soon their ramblings will become louder and more virulent and, if you are too close, the spittle which comes from their angry lips could infect you. Thus, the ten-foot rule. Another way to get an early jump on recognizing others who may be infected is to check your local newspaper’s letters page. If you see a person has written one letter complaining about a candidate, don’t panic. If you see numerous letters over several weeks ranting incoherently about politics, then you know for sure they are infected. Do Not!! I Repeat!! Do Not Get Within Twenty Feet Of These People! They Are The Worst Of The Carriers Of The Virus! Some folks will have political signs on their lawns. This is not necessarily a clue they have the virus, but it should give you a heads up to watch them for some of the more obvious signs. (If someone has a sign on their lawn as big as a roadside billboard, it is best to stay away from them till after the election, just to be safe.) Of course, if anyone you know who works full time for a political party in trying to get others elected, they will always be carriers of the virus, no matter what the season. Approach them with caution at all times. They are extremely dangerous. The CPVC also suggests wearing a mask if attending a town meeting here in New Hampshire since this unique form of Politivirus shows a different mutation every single year so it is hard to keep up with the changes. Though not all will be infected, those that are can carry some of the more virulent strains of Politivirus. You may witness neighbors, who once seemed like calm, collected individuals, suddenly transform into babbling, spittle spewing maniacs. The site alone is unnerving, but enough to make one realize how dangerous this virus can be if the proper precautions aren’t taken. Most folks think that it is im-

possible to catch Politivirus if you just stay home. Though this used to be true many years ago, the rise of social media has seen Politivirus now running rampant and unchecked in millions of homes, once thought safe havens. If you are not infected and go on Facebook or Twitter, it can sometimes only be a matter of minutes, and in extreme cases seconds, until you can feel the inklings of Politivirus starting to take hold. If you start to feel any of the symptoms it is advised by the CPVC that you SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. It has been proven that just one, snarky, seemingly innocent reply to a posting by someone else with Politivirus can lead swiftly to one and then dozens and by then it is, sadly, too late. The CPVC also warns folks not to be too complacent once Election Day comes and goes in November (or here in New Hampshire once Town Meeting Day is over). Though the strains of Politvirus will diminish, the germs are always in the air circulating around and, unfortunately, some folks never recover, they are infected for life. (As mentioned previously, the letters pages are a good resource.) It is advised that you stay vigilant throughout the year. It is usually just when you let your guard down that you will unexpectedly find yourself infected, throwing spittle and ranting like a mad person. So, be careful out there. Some folks suggest buying lots of toilet paper helps somehow, but who knows? And wash your hands…it couldn’t hurt. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 12, 2020 —

What Part of ‘NO AMNESTY’ Doesn’t DC Understand? The rumblings from the Beltway are ominous, my fellow Americans. As the U.S Supreme Court prepares to rule on President Donald Trump’s termination of the Obama administration amnesty and work permits for 800,000 young illegal immigrants sometime between now and June 2020, all the usual open-borders by Michelle Malkin special interests are lobbying for a “DACA Syndicated Columnist deal” in Congress. I am hearing that big business and big tech are pressuring the White House to attach a mass illegal immigrant pardon to Jared Kushner’s so-called immigration reform plan, which would tinker here and there with tighter enforcement but ultimately maintain (or even increase) the yearly allotment of 1 million annual green cards to satisfy the Chamber of Commerce and Mick Mulvaney’s insatiable appetite for more cheap foreign workers. Let me make this crystal clear: An amnesty for DREAMERs is a total nonstarter. This is not just a deal killer. It’s a reelection killer. Whoever is whispering in Trump’s ear needs to be shoved aside, tied to an anvil and dumped in the Potomac. The libertarian Koch-funded LIBRE Initiative, Americans for Prosperity and Apple CEO Tim Cook are at the forefront of pushing the DACA deal. Supposedly, conservative members of Congress are also cooking up ways to allow Obama’s DACA recipients to stay, including GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley, whose Secure and Succeed Act promises a “pathway to citizenship” for those 800,000 immigrants here illegally. It’s backed by 39 other Republicans. Enough is enough. I will repeat what I’ve repeated over the past two decades of amnesty betrayals of the American people: Amnesty begets more amnesty. Since the Reagan administration, there have been seven illegal immigrant amnesties passed into law since 1986: --The 1986 Immigration and Reform Control Act blanket amnesty for an estimated 2.7 million illegal immigrants. --1994: The “Section 245(i)” temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 illegal immigrants. --1997: Extension of the Section 245(i) amnesty. --1997: The Nicaraguan AdSee MALKIN on 36

Why Americans Should Celebrate Biden’s Comeback On Super Tuesday, the Democratic Party came to its senses -- at least, to a point. Through the first three primaries, Democratic voters seemed sanguine about the possibility of a lifelong by Ben Shapiro communist fellow travSyndicated Columnist eler taking their presidential nomination. Conventional wisdom -- including, I admit, my own -- suggested that Sen. Bernie Sanders’, I-Vt., early primary victories had put former Vice President Joe Biden on the road to ruin. After all, no presidential candidate of the last several election cycles has won after declaring a firewall, from Rudy Giuliani’s Florida firewall in 2008 to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 blue wall. But something happened on the way to a Sanders nomination: Democratic voters realized that Bernie Sanders is Bernie Sanders. It began in South Carolina, where Biden skunked Sanders, outpacing the poll numbers by leaps and bounds. Latedeciding voters simply turned away from Sanders in droves. The same held true on Super Tuesday, when voters across the country ran from Sanders -- and from Michael Bloomberg, who acted as a backup choice to Biden and became superfluous the moment Biden showed signs of life in South Carolina. Biden’s victories across the South weren’t unexpected. His victories in Minnesota, Maine and Massachusetts certainly were. Biden didn’t suddenly reinvigorate his campaign because he became a better campaigner -- the day before Super Tuesday, he called Super Tuesday “Super Thursday” and quoted the Declaration of Independence with this immortal formulation: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: All men and women created

by the -- go -- you know -- you know the thing!” Usually, such gaffes are not the sign of a campaign on the upswing. But for Biden, none of that mattered. That’s because once Sanders moved from being the outsider crazy uncle who shouts at clouds to the front-runner, Democratic voters truly had to assess his credentials. Years of media running cover for Sanders made Sanders vulnerable to revelations about his record; the first time Sanders was asked to his face about his lake house was when Michael Bloomberg asked him in a public debate. And Sanders, being a man out of time -that time being 1930s City College of New York -- proved unwilling to moderate his extreme views. Instead, he doubled down on his tut-tutting of communist repression, his hatred of Israel and his desire to quash the greatest functioning economy in world history. And Democrats turned away. Some Democrats were unwilling to stake their 2020 hopes on a Marxist near octogenarian; more were simply unwilling to hand the party over to a Noam Chomsky on foreign policy and a Eugene Debs on domestic policy. Most Democrats still like the United States. And that’s excellent news for the country. A Sanders nomination would have meant, practically speaking, half the country rallying around the agenda of a man who once declared he hoped to nationalize every major industry in the United States, a man who has spent decades praising nearly every communist dictatorship on the planet, a man who seethes with disdain for American history and founding principles. Instead, Democrats will rally around the banner that is anti-President Donald Trump -- but Biden isn’t an anti-American communist, and his nomination won’t mean the deepening of See SHAPIRO on 35

South Carolina mom Debra Harrell worked at McDonald’s. She couldn’t afford day care for Regina, her 9-yearold daughter, so she took her to work. But Regina was bored at McDon-

ald’s. One day, she asked if she could just play in the neighborhood park instead. “I felt safe there,” she tells me in my new video, “because I was with my friends and their parents.” “She had her cellphone, a pocket-

book with money in it,” says Debra. “She had everything she needed.” Regina was happy. Debra was happy. But one parent asked Regina where her mom was, and then called the police. Officers went to McDonald’s and arrested Debra. In jail, they berated her. “You can’t leave a child who is 9 years old in the park by herself!” said one officer. “What if some sex offender came by?” People interviewed by the media were also outraged. “What if a man came and just snatched her?” asked one. “This day and time, you never know

who’s around!” said another. But what are they talking about? Crime in America is way down, half what it was in the ‘90s. Reports of missing children are also down. If kids are kidnapped or molested, it’s almost always by a relative or an acquaintance, not by a stranger in a park. Nevertheless, prosecutors charged Debra Harrell with “willful abandonment of a child,” a crime that carries up to a 10-year sentence. They also took Regina away from her mom -- for two weeks. “I would cry at night because I was really scared,” Regina told me. “I didn’t know where I was, or what was going on.”

Fortunately, attorney Robert Phillips took Debra’s case for free. He didn’t like the way police and media portrayed her. “Here was this black female that society gives a hard time. ‘Welfare queens, living at home, not getting a job!’ Well, that’s what she was doing,” he said. “She was out working, trying the best she could to take care of her child. And now we’re beating her up because we didn’t like the way she took care of her child.” The cops said that Harrell should have sent her daughter to day care. But even if she could have afforded it, it’s not clear that day care is safer. See STOSSEL on 36

Coronavirus; Globalization’s Revenge? GENEVA - In recent decades China has emerged as the factory to the world; a key player in production networks for automobiles, by John J. Metzler s m a r t p h o n e s , Syndicated Columnist computers, textiles and medical equipment. Indeed as the world’s second largest economy Mainland China has become an indispensable part of globalization’s network combining low wage levels, diverse production platforms, and good transport networks. Thus the old Adage, “When America sneezes, the world catches a cold” can be cynically rebranded, “When China sneezes, the world catches the Coronavirus.” Sadly, the Chinese

people are once again victims of their own government as the tragically dire consequences from the contagion evolve. There’s an nervous unease in Europe over the still unfolding effects of the mysterious Coronavirus. Usually the Swiss are pretty sanguine about everything; not too much emotion and keep your eyes on the job of prosperity. But when the glittering and signature Geneva International Motor Show was abruptly cancelled as a precaution to the virus, people quietly realized that the Coronavirus was more than the usual media hype. Clearly China’s industrial Wuhan region remains the epicenter of the virus, and curiously Iran has seen deadly clusters but most of the outside world was only jolted into reality by two factors; Corona’s

surprising spread in South Korea (recall that China is Seoul’s largest trading partner) and then suddenly the spike in northern Italy. But it’s the Italian connection that suddenly focused attention on the spreading health emergency. Markets have been rattled, stock market gyrated, factories closed, and schools shut. The airline industry is set for steep losses on drops in passenger revenue. Tourism and business travel has gone into limbo. Question marks now abound. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control asserts that the European Union faces a “moderate to high” risk of “widespread sustained transmission” of the officially labeled Covid-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) upgraded the global risk of

the coronavirus outbreak to “very high,” its top level of risk assessment. WHO says there is still a chance of containing the virus if its chain of transmission is broken. Still we’ve seen this movie before. Corona is hardly the world’s first global epidemic; SARS, Ebola, Zika all challenged world health in recent times. But when the SARS virus emerged in 2002, China accounted for just 4 per cent of the world economy. Currently it’s 16 per cent. China is now a global player especially in production chains. Significantly COVID-19’s wrath exposes two overlooked threats; Pharmaceutical production and Global supply chains. China has emerged as the world’s top manufacturer of pharmaceutical ingredients. What’s the Difference Between Short- and Long-term Investing? As you go through life, you’ll have many financial goals. Fortunately, you don’t need to achieve them all at the same time. But when you have a mix of short- and long-term goals, you will need to pursue some different investment strategies simultaneously. Your short-term goals may depend somewhat on your stage in life. For example, when you’re starting out with your career and you’re beginning to raise a family, you may well have a goal of saving enough money for a down payment on a home. Later on, though, you may decide you want to travel the world for a year. Because you know about how much money you’ll need, and when you’ll need it, you can choose the appropriate investments, with these characteristics: Low risk – Above all else, you want the right amount of money to be there when it’s time to use it. So, you’ll need low-risk, high-stability investments. You won’t see much in the way of growth from these types of investments, but you also won’t be sweating every single market downturn in fear of not reaching your goal. Liquidity – You won’t want to worry about trying to find a market for your investment when it’s time to sell it and then use the proceeds for your short-term goal. That’s why you need to pick short-term vehicles that are highly liquid. Now, moving on to longer-term goals, the situation can be quite a bit different. Suppose, for instance, you’re saving and investing for a

retirement that may be three or four decades away. For this goal, you have one overriding motivation: to end up with as much money as possible. And since you have so many years until you need this money, you may be able to take on more risk than you could with the investments you counted on for your short-term needs. This isn’t to say you should be reckless, of course – you still need to pay attention to your individual risk tolerance. Overall, though, there’s a big philosophical difference, in terms of risk capacity, between investing for the long term versus the short term. When you’re saving for a long-term goal such as retirement, you may need to rely primarily on your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. And within these accounts, you’ll need a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented investments. It’s true that growth investments are volatile, with sometimes sharp price declines. But in exchange, you have the opportunity for greater growth potential. Once you do retire, you’ll still have longterm goals. For one thing, even during retirement, you’ll need your portfolio to have some growth potential to keep you ahead of inflation. And you’ll also need to address perhaps the longest-term goal of all: leaving the type of legacy you desire for your loved ones. A financial professional can help you clarify and prioritize your short- and long-term

goals, as well as assist you in choosing the appropriate strategies for helping meet these goals – whether they’re three years or three decades away.

nated for the 2020 gridiron campaign. Go Chargers! Sports Quiz The Los Angeles Chargers played in San Diego for decades before moving to L.A. three years ago. But where did the Chargers first play when they were an original AFL team in 1960?

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

FOOTBALL FATIGUE … AND WHITHER TOM BRADY? Last month saw the return of winter/ spring pro football in the form of the latest iteration of the XFL— featuring eight teams in two divisions. I haven’t really tuned in because after the Super Bowl I need a gridiron break. Call it “football fatigue.” So my apologies to the Houston Roughnecks, St. Louis Battlehawks et al. (BTW, what exactly is a “Battlehawk?”) For me, the sports cycle involves an annual rhythm and March is not a time for football. It is a time for college hoop madness, MLB spring training, NBA and NHL homestretches and thoughts of the Masters. But the XFL is shoving football in our faces, with ESPN and FOX Sports serving as willing accomplices. And there is spring college football as well! The ESPN Networks will be televising intra-squad SEC games starting with Vanderbilt’s annual Black and Gold Spring Game on April 3. I kid you not. Aye caramba! Then there’s the NFL Scouting Combine—those four days

Will Tom Brady be a San Diego Charger in 2020? in Indianapolis where the pros evaluate new talent in preparation for next month’s NFL draft. But much of the talk in Indianapolis was about old talent rather than new talent. By that I mean Tom Brady who could be a free agent on March 18. Reportedly conversations between Brady and Coach Bill Belichick have been, well, “curt.” I have a feeling that Belichick would like to prove he can win without Brady. So for whom will #12 play in 2020? Probably not the Patriots. I predicted in this space early last fall that Brady would be an L.A. Charger in 2020. Now that longtime Charger quarterback Phil Rivers is a free agent it makes a Brady move to L.A. all the more likely. What else does Tom have to prove in New England? Why not finish

his career in his home state and in a city better suited than Foxborough for his super model wife Gisele? As I wrote last fall: “If your supermodel wife ain’t happy, then ain’t nobody gonna be happy.” Not that Gisele is unhappy. But sometimes a change of scenery—a new venue—can be a good, healthy, rejuvenating thing. We’ll know Brady’s decision later this spring—probably before the XFL championship game on Sunday, April 26, at TDECU Stadium in Houston. Which just MAY give us one fairly football free month in 2020. May. NFL teams can have organized team practice activity—OTAs—in June in preparation for July training camps. Minimal football news and action in May “may” give me the gridiron break I need to be refreshed and rejuve-

Selecting Lure Colors by direction of currents. Only after a fish has zeroed in on its meal using its lateral line or olfactory system will it rely on its vision. So, unless there are fish directly under or around you, you don’t need to worry much about what color lure you are using. When there are fish within sight of your lure, then color becomes important. You want a color that will stand out to your target species. The old adage is to match your lure color to the light conditions. Use bright colors on bright days, neutral colors on cloudy days, and dark

by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

I always tell people that lure color should be one of the last things you change when fish aren’t biting. Change size, shape, even presentation, before you change color. Since they are near-sighted, vision is close to the bottom of the list of senses that fish use when feeding. Moreover, the wavelength of certain colors and the available light plays a large part in which colors fish see best. A little understanding of the senses fish use goes a long way. The biggest factors in lure selection should be shape of your lure and the type of bait, if any, that you put on it. Fish use their lateral line system, which is made up of hair-

Night Shift’s Whirlpool and The 87 WHERE YOU ALWAYS FIND

GREAT CRAFT

ON DRAFT!

Contributing Writer

Excitement. It’s the root word we use to describe all sorts of feelings and experiences. Our first roller coaster ride at the fair was exciting. Experiencing the top of the Empire State Building for the first time was exciting. Your favorite action movie or car race can be exciting. Well, the point of this is to get your attention to a very exciting moment in delicious craft brewed beer. Finally coming to New Hampshire is the long awaited and exciting arrival of brews from Night Shift. Night Shift Brewing of Everett, Massachusetts has its beginnings in a kitchen in Somerville, MA. During 2007, co-founders Rob Burns, Mike O’Mara, and Michael Oxton began homebrewing at night after their normal work day jobs were done. Their hope was to make beers for friends and family that were more flavorful than the commercial choices on store shelves. By 2012, the trio had moved their hobby to a small warehouse in Everett and launched their business. Their “create better” mindset

and passion for great beer for loyal customers soon grew their staff, production, and distribution in the local marketplace. They began to self-distribute their beer in the back of an old Subaru but quickly found the need for expansion in that regard as well. Today, Night Shift Brewing still operates and distributes from their Everett location. They now offer a craft coffee and hard seltzer side to the business and have opened a massive tasting room and eatery at LoveJoy Wharf in Boston. They also support a “popup beer garden” where their beer is served and supported by food trucks. Look over their website at NightShiftBrewing.com Both Whirlpool and The 87 are super delicious IPAs. Whirlpool gets its name from the action of adding hops just after the boil process is complete and before

fermentation. After the boil, the liquid is held around 185°F and spun or whirlpooled while the hops are added. This action creates an abundance of aroma to the finished beer. At 4.5% ABV, Whirlpool is considered to be a ‘session’ beer (any beer under 5% is referred to as a session). It is a hazy straw colored beer with a healthy white head. Aromas of tangerine, grapefruit and mango grace your nose before you sip. Light and dry, mellow and slightly spicy, Whirlpool lathers your tongue with a pillowy tropical freshness. If you still have work to do, this beer makes for a great afternoon break. The 87 is a double IPA rated at 8% ABV. As delicious as freshsqueezed orange juice, 87 is hazy juice bomb of aromas and tastes that display brewing excellence. Like its Whirlpool cousin, 87 is a New England IPA

with notes of tropical citrus and pineapple, but just a lot more of it (thus the double status). The beer gets its name from the address at the Everett location; 87 Santilli Highway. I loved this beer and of the two, would choose 87 again and again. BeerAdvocate.com has awarded Whirlpool with a 92 out of 100 and an ‘Outstanding’ badge, while The 87 edges one better at 93. You can buy either of these beers in 16 oz four packs and look for other offerings of Night Shift at Case-n-Keg in Meredith as well as other fine beer providers. And you might have noticed their stylish trademark logo. It’s the night owl of course… very exciting!

Animal Crackers Sponsored by

What’s Going On Meow? New Sponsors Added for Upcoming Saving Animals Funspot Indoor Triathlon -

FUNds4Paws is pleased to announce that two new businesses have signed on as sponsors to support this year’s Indoor Triathlon event. Paquette Signs of Meredith has agreed to take the top supporter spot as this year’s Presenting Sponsor, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka has also joined the list of businesses supporting this year’s event as a Big Dog Sponsor. Other businesses already signed on earlier this year as Big Dog Sponsors are the Union Diner, Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant and Rhode Island Novelty Company. And supporting sponsors Oldies 92.9, Planet 100.1 FM, Mix 94.1, Lake Side Animal Hospital, Funspot, WSCY 106.9 FM, Brian Smillie Candy Distributor and the Weirs Times newspaper. Paquette Signs have been building signs that build business since 1970! Visit them online at http://www.paquettesigns.com/ or call 603-279-6767 for more information on the signage solutions they can offer. It was a great fit for Tito’s Handmade Vodka out of Austin Texas to join in the fun as a major supporter at the Big Dog level because of their well known nationwide support for animal causes. The vision of their “Vodka for Dog People” program is to better the lives of pets and their families far and wide. And it all started when stray dogs started showing up at the Texas distillery and office in Austin. Workers there saw the need for Tito’s to rescue and protect these animals that came into their lives. Tito’s also allows all of their employees to bring their furry best friends to the office with them. We hope our readers will show some love for these businesses for their huge support for animal causes in NH. Although this year’s event is sold out for teams - there’s still plenty of help needed funding those Triathlon teams as well as general donations to the event. Go to www.FUNds4Paws.org for more info on how you can help with the efforts.

LOOKING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOMES Cutie Captain Hopes for a Forever Home...

Cute little Captain came to us as a stray from Captain’s Way in Effingham in Nov. of 2019. We have been working hard to coax her out of her thick shell and so now she will sometimes let us touch her. She is bolder in the company of other cats. We are seeking a special kind of adopter for Captain, one that is patient, calm and has social cats already living in the home. Fast movements and loud noises will make Captain hide so we don’t recommend a home with children for this particular kitty. Captain is current on vaccines, spayed, microchipped and ready for a home to call her own. LAKES REGION HUMANE SOCIETY 11 Old Rt. 28, Ossipee, NH (603) 539-1077 • www.lrhs.net

Barn or Shed Homes Needed for Working Cats

These are cats who have been spayed or neutered, microchipped, given rabies and distemper vaccines, and are ready to settle in and decimate your rodent population. Simply by wandering around your barn and storage areas, they can deter unwelcome creatures from getting into your stuff, eating your wiring, shredding your cabin air filter to make nests, and eating your hay. They are not unionized, and will work for kibble, clean water, and a warm place to hang out during bad weather. Contact Karen Laflamme at karen.laflamme. nh@gmail.com if you think you could use some barn cats to keep things real!! Karen serves the area around Laconia, NH; Vera Boals at ThoseCatRescuePeople@gmail.com for the NH Seacoast Area. We can hook you up with barn cats! If you are in Maine, we will put you in contact with Friends of Ferals.

BIRDS For The

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I heard them, that’s for sure. There was no missing the cacophony made by a large mixed flock of blackbirds. Then the task became finding them. I figured I wouldn’t struggle too much at this chore as the trees are bare and I could tell from the sound of things there were a lot of them. It wasn’t as easy as I thought, but I did find them in fairly short order. Yes, the trees were bare, but the sound was coming from a bit of a distance away and I was on terrain with many rolling hills. I crested the second hill and there they were in all their glory. The flock was mostly grackles, but a couple dozen red-winged blackbirds completed the flock. All told there were about 80 birds. It was a sizable flock, but certainly not the biggest I have seen and most certainly not the biggest working its way into or through New England now. Red-winged blackbirds are one of the earliest spring migrants to return. My story took place last week, in early March, which is actually a few weeks later than we usually start seeing them. In fact, Elena from Winchester had a few hardy redwinged blackbirds visit her feeders all throughout winter. The flock I saw the other day carried on for a while and then suddenly got quiet. I don’t know if the

A red-winged blackbird sings from the top of a tree in New England. birds spotted a predator or if they were ready to settle in for the night as it was well into dusk. I certainly could have missed something, especially considering the fading light, but I noted only grackles and red-winged blackbirds. These mixed flocks of blackbirds often have brown-headed cowbirds and starlings as well. If you’re lucky and take the time to scrutinize over the individual birds in the flock, you may find an unexpected visitor such as yellow-headed blackbird, boat-tailed grackle or rusty blackbird. It is believed that blackbirds winter and migrate in large flocks to offer better protection against predators and, perhaps, more effectively find food sources. Yes, the spring migration is under way.

It won’t be long now before the phoebes start showing up. To me, the return of “my” phoebes to the backyard signifies the real beginning of spring. Then, of course, birds of all shapes, colors and sizes will return to New England to either breed here or pass through on their way to northern breeding grounds. It hasn’t been much of a winter, at least where I am in New England. That doesn’t mean winter is over, not by any means. I’ve been in New England long enough to know that we aren’t out of the woods until the third or even fourth week of April. Let’s hope it’s not another winter that stretches well into our spring. But that’s out of our control. If it is a long winter, we will deal with it. We always do.

Every aspect of the boating industry will be represented at the Great Northeast Boat Show from 25 boat dealers and more than 200 boats. GNEBS from 1 and more than 200 boats all under cover in a convenient location less than one hour from most major areas in the northeast. “This really is a relaxing and affordable boat show,” said Blair Anthony, organizer of GNEBS along with his wife, Suzette. “Unlike the Boston Boat Shows, there is plenty of free parking right on site and the dealers are very accessible for one on one meetings to answer all your questions. It’s real hands on. Plus there aren’t any million dollar boats, these are all first class and very affordable boats that fit most any budget.” As GNEBS has grown over the years, so has its offerings in response to what attendees have re-

quested in the past. “There will be more fishing boats this year by many dealers,” said Anthony. “There will also be more ocean boats as well. And for the first time we will have electric boats as Duffy Electric boats will be at the show.” Among the many boat dealers are Fay’s Boat Yard located in Gilford, NH. Fay’s will be displaying eight boats at the show including the new 24-foot Glastron GTD-240. “It’s a roomier deck boat,” said Melissa Higgins of Fay’s. “It has the layout of a pontoon boat with the hull design of a runabout.” Fay’s will also be showcasing Pontoon boats by Avalon, a Fishing Boat by Wellcraft and Glastron Bow Riders. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 12, 2020 — SMITH from 3 migrants that settled in Nutfield (now Londonderry), New Hampshire. Stark was born there on August 28, 1728, but the family moved to Derryfield when John was eight years old. Remember that much of New Hampshire was still wilderness in those days and many children, including John Stark, had little formal schooling, and spent much of their time working on the farms that were being cleared in the forests. Young John did learn to hunt and fish and when he was twenty-four years old he and three companions, including his older brother, went on a hunting and trapping trip along the Baker River in the area of what is now Rumney, New Hampshire. They began their trip in the month of March and established a campsite along the river and stayed in the area until the end of April when they realized that there were Indians in the area and decided to pack up and head home. They had been successful in accumulating a good amount of fur pelts during their weeks in the area and John was given the task of collecting the traps in preparation for their departure and was thus separated from his companions. It was said to have been near nightfall when he was captured by a band of ten Abenaki Indians. They, somehow knowing that he was not alone, demanded that he lead them to his friends. Instead of doing that, he began to lead the Indians in the opposite direction, but his companions, not

Map showing location of Fort William Henry on Lake George, NY . knowing that he had been captured, signaled for him to return to their camp by firing their guns into the air, revealing their location to the Indians. The details of what followed may differ a little depending on who is telling the story, but we know that the Indians went towards the camp of the white men with the objective of capturing them. Amos Eastman was captured, David Stinson was shot to death, and William Stark alone escaped and returned home. Eastman and Stark were taken to an Indian village in Canada where they learned much about the Indians’ way of life including their battle strategies. When I was a boy we engaged in an activity which we made a game of that was called running the gauntlet. I don’t think I realized that this derived from an activity used by the native Americans in regards to captured subjects. John Stark

and Amos Eastman were forced after their capture to run the gauntlet. Young Indians armed with wooden clubs or switches lined up opposite each other in two long rows and the captives were forced to run one at a time in a straight line between the Indian men who would swing at them with their weapons. Amos Eastman was reported to have suf-

fered a severe beating on his run, but Stark violently swung a wooden pole (some say that it was one he grabbed from the first Indian in line) which caused the Indian men to recoil and kept Stark from but little injury. The old men laughed at the goings on and, respecting the bravery of Stark, eventually treated him as one of the tribe. (During our childhood attempts at running the gauntlet slaps with an open hand were used to “punish” the gauntlet runner.) While in the Indian village, Stark was asked to cultivate rows of corn by hoeing but is said that he pretended he didn’t know the corn from the weeds and hoed the corn and left the weeds standing. Then, exclaiming that he shouldn’t be

hoeing corn because that was women’s work, he threw down his hoe, possibly into the river, and refused to continue. This, too, gained the admiration of the tribe leaders and he was no longer asked to do “women’s work” during his stay with the tribe. It was the custom of the tribe that the men were to be the hunters and warriors and all the work around the home was done by the women. The two captured white men stayed with the Indians for a couple of months until they were ransomed by men from Massachusetts who visited the village to ransom two Massachusetts men. That State had a policy of paying ransom money to the Indians for its citizens. John Stark was ransomed

for the equivalent of $103 with one report saying it was for an Indian pony that had been purchased for $103, while Eastman was set free for $60. The State of New Hampshire was asked to reimburse the State of Massachusetts but didn’t do so, causing Stark to take matters into his own hands and repay the ransom money himself, going on another hunting trip to earn the money to do so. The military heroics that were to come later would make General Stark a favorite N.H. personality. Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr., welcomes your comments at danahillsmiths@yahoo. com.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 12, 2020 — HOUSE from 10 Save’ statewide endangered property list in October 2017, after town officials first started to discuss its demolition. The ‘Seven to Save’ program recognizes significant properties under threat by neglect, lack of planning, and development pressures. In an October 2019 letter urging the Board of Selectmen to list the house for sale, the Alliance’s Executive Director Jennifer Goodman wrote “We believe that demolition of the Taylor House is premature and unwarranted,” noting “From our experience involved in scores of community projects around the state, we know that it takes time and the right alignment of seller and buyer interests and market forces for redevelopment plans to come together.” State preservation leaders emphasize that saving historic properties and retaining small-town character are essential in efforts to attract investment, draw new residents and visitors, support local businesses, and promote economic vitality. The Taylor House (properly the FrenchTaylor House) was added to the honorary New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2019, providing benefits for its rehabilitation including special consideration or relief in the application of access, building, and safety codes. In addition, the

Moultonborough Heritage Commission Chair Cristina Ashjian with This Old House hosts Kevin O’Conner and Charlie Silva at the recent NH PBS 40th Anniversary celebration and VIP reception at the Bank of NH Stage in Concord. house qualifies for RSA 79-E, the Community Revitalization Tax Relief Incentive Program, which is intended to encourage investment with the rehabilitation and active re-use of historic buildings by providing temporary tax relief for 5 to13 years. Since March 2017, when severe winds damaged the Taylor House’s roofing, the Moultonborough Heritage Commission has focused on finding a future use for the

property, recognizing that loss of the building would severely impact the Village’s unique character, streetscape, and sense of place. In August 2018, the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources wrote in support of such efforts to save the house: “Historical resources define our village centers…We urge the Moultonborough Board of Selectmen to work with the Heritage Commission and other community partners

to explore ways to repurpose rather than demolish the French-Taylor House. We ask the Board to fully consider the irreversibility of demolishing the house and its effect on the historic community.” When the Board of Selectmen again started to discuss demolition of the Taylor House in September 2019, Commission chair Cristina Ashjian noted “There is not a single Moultonborough planning study that recommends

demolition of any community landmark. Instead, recent studies and public opinion demonstrate that Moultonborough residents value historic buildings, and support finding active new uses for them.” She cited how 84% of respondents to the Town’s Village Vision survey supported preserving and repurposing historic buildings, and the Village Vision Report was endorsed at Town Meeting in March 2015. Since then, the Master Plan update, the 2018 Charrette Report and community input session, and the 2019 UNH First Impressions Report have all confirmed those findings. Now in early 2020, the Taylor House is listed for sale with the 603 Property Group. Interested parties can find professional reports on the property’s history and condition on the Moultonborough Heritage Commission webpage or by contacting Town Planner Bruce Woodruff (www.moultonboroughnh. gov/heritage-commission). Woodruff said, “this very informative article in This Old House magazine points to all the right reasons and the opportunity to save an integral part of the village center of our Town; without it and a viable use for it, the village will look like a puzzle board with a missing piece in the center.”

The deeper your lure sinks, the more these colors (in that order) will disappear or turn black. As light fades, these colors will disappear or appear black to fish. Gold and silver are only good on bright days because they reflect the available light. I typically have red, orange, green, blue, white, and gold lures in every jig box. Knowing the natural forage of your target species can also give you a leg up. The available light and type of prey your quarry is chasing will determine which color lure you

should ultimately use, but a good starting point is to match the available light – bright colors on bright days, etc. – but before you change color, change your presentation. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 12, 2020 — METZLER from 7 tories have been disrupted since February. “Eighty percent of the active pharmaceuticals ingredients in the U.S. are imported, with the majority coming from China and India,” according to Hong Kong’s authoritative South China Morning Post. In fact the proportion of Chinese sourced medicines for the American market include 95 percent of ibuprofen, 91 percent of hydrocortisone and 40 percent of heparin. You get the picture. Why not think about alternative production sites in the Czech Republic and Hungary, two traditional centers of pharmaceuticals? Secondly, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warns that while the Chinese economy has become the world’s largest exporter, “over the last month, China has seen a dramatic reduction in its manufacturing.” “The 2 percent contraction has had

ripple effects through the global economy and has caused an estimated drop in Chinese exports of about $50 billion,” the survey warns. As UNCTAD adds, “Any disruption of China’s output is expected to have repercussions elsewhere through regional and global value chains.” The UN agency asserts that for February, Covids-19’s damage to the global value chain s t o o d a t $ 1 5 . 6 b i llion for the European Union, $5.7 billion for the USA, and $3.8 billion for South Korea. These numbers reflect components for autos, communications equipment and all forms of machinery. Naturally the yet to be determined knock on effect will see a slowdown in manufacturing and a contraction of world trade. The global shipping industry, the seaborne lifeblood of China’s commerce, not to mention its controversial

Belt and Road program, has seriously impacted both imports and exports. Then there’s the wider fear factor and the shameless politicization of the contagion crisis. The dangers of a pandemic are on media steroids. And now a Perfect storm of the Coronavirus, production slowdowns, stock market whipsaws, a volatile American presidential race, contains the grist of global uncertainty. While we in the West have become dangerously dependent on China as a low cost production base, we may now discover how high the cost actually was. John J. And, of course, most recently, the Trump administration buried an amnesty for thousands of Liberian illegal immigrants in the latest 2020 National

Defense Authorization Act -- championed by Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. Not one of those amnesties was associated with a decline in illegal immigration. On the contrary, the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has tripled since President Reagan signed the first amnesty in 1986. The total effect of the amnesties was even larger because relatives later joined amnesty recipients, and this number was multiplied by an unknown number of children born to amnesty recipients who then acquired automatic U.S. citizenship. All of these amnesties, on top of uncontrolled mass migration of legal immigrant, aren’t just turning California and Virginia

and Texas blue. They are turning all of America blue. Every American should be seeing red about it and raising their voice against the coming, unforgivable betrayal of the MAGA doctrine. This isn’t making American great again. It’s making America disappear. What part of “NO AMNESTY” doesn’t D.C. understand? Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@protonmail.com. STOSSEL from 7 “We found 42 incidents of sexual molestations, rapes in day cares,” said Phillips. “We couldn’t find (in South Carolina in the last 20 years) a single abduction in a park.” Philips blames people in my business for scaring people about the wrong things. “The media has brought up this ‘stranger danger’ to where, if you’re not under the protective wings of mom and dad 24/7, then you’re exposing your child to some unknown danger.” That has frightened police and child welfare workers into taking absurd steps when parents leave children alone. In Maryland, police accused parents of child neglect for letting their kids roam around their

neighborhood. In Kentucky, after police reported a mom who left her kids in the car while she dashed into a store, child welfare workers strip-searched the kids to make sure they weren’t being abused. This doesn’t protect kids. It mostly scares parents into depriving their kids of chances to learn. “When you don’t let them spread their wings, that’s when they get in trouble!” says Debra. She was fortunate that her case got enough attention that even Nikki Haley, then South Carolina’s governor, asked that Regina be given back to her mom. Prosecutors finally dropped the child abandonment charge. It’s just not right that when stranger kidnappings are increasingly

rare, police and child welfare workers are more eager to punish parents who let kids play on their own. “A Utah law guarantees that giving kids some reasonable independence isn’t ‘neglect,’” says Lenore Skenazy, of the nonprofit Let Grow, “More states need this!” Of course, some parents are so neglectful that government should intervene. But as lawyer Phillips put it, they should intervene “only if you are subjecting your child to a real harm. We should not have unreasonable intrusions by the government telling us every little detail how to raise our children.” John Stossel is author of “No They Can’t! Why Government Fails -- But Individuals Succeed.”
