Live & Let Live Farm Seeks Help With Expansion by Scott Philbrick Live & Let Live Farm

March may be a little too early to be tempting fate in this regard, but it seems that we’ve managed to make it through a relatively mild winter, doesn’t it? Live and Let Live Farm Rescue & Sanctuary (LLLF) is now in full blown mud season, with Jerry Paradis out there daily with his fleet of heavy equipment doing what needs to be done

to maintain the farm’s network of roads, keeping them as passable as possible for everyone from volunteers to workers to hay delivery trucks to those arranging pet adoptions. And speaking of pet adoptions, we have a big and exciting announcement to share. The single biggest thing that we’ve learned from the COVID-19 nightmare of the past year plus, is See FARM on 34

To The Editor: HB 341 was recommended “Inexpedient to Legislate” (ITL) by a vote of 10-9. Write to the full House asking them to vote YES on ITL of HB 341: nhhouse@leg.state. nh.us We’ve seen many similar bills that attempt to ‘urbanize’ rural towns in NH by favoring high-density construction over single-family homes. These bills should be sent to the trash bin. At HB 341’s hearing, two out-of-state lobbyists were allowed to testify in favor; one from Virginia, another from Portland, Oregon . They are indicative of the strong national push espousing the ‘new urbanist’ scam, which is based on the idea people do not want to own their own homes and that parking is not needed as cars will just ‘go away’. The full list of lobbyists is available on the State website. There is no assurance that ‘urbanization’ will result in affordable housing, or that people will cease using cars. Homeowners, especially those who cherish the rural flavor of small-townNH, should be troubled by out-of-staters with an agenda attempting to influence what happens in NH. This is why it is important to write to the Committees as they examine the bills, and further, to write to the full House and Senate to ask them to vote to support or oppose those recommendations.

Peterborough NH residents were smart. They are glad that the citizens petitioned, and then voted, to have an elected Planning Board . Every Planning Board should be elected. And lobbyists should be sent packing. Jane Aitken Bedford NH.

For The People? To The Editor: Fortunately for Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and other Washington Democrat officeholders, there is no criminal “Truth in Labelling” Law that applies to Legislation…or they would be in jail. The “For the People Act” title is a total misrepresentation; it would destroy our “Democracy” by turning our elections into cheating contests. The misnamed “For the People Act” (H.R. 1, https://tinyurl.com/pk2y9h5z, Senate version, S.1, https://tinyurl. com/va25xz9e) does nothing for you or anyone who wants their vote to actually count, and not counteracted by an illegal vote. Responding to low confidence in the 2000 and 2004 elections, a bi-partisan Commission on Federal Election Reform was established, led by former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker. The title of their 2005 Report (https://tinyurl. com/6hurf7ms) is “Building Confidence in US Elections”. The (Carter-Baker) Report

addresses increasing voter participation and ensuring election integrity. H.R.1 goes far beyond the Report’s recommendations related to increasing voter participation. H.R.1 automatically registers people from state and federal databases; this will create duplicate registrations, and registrations for people who aren’t citizens and others who aren’t legally authorized to vote including illegal immigrants, some felons, and even 16 year olds. H.R.1 enacts nationwide same-day registration and voting despite their demonstrated enablement and enticement for voter fraud. H.R.1 imposes the opposite of items identified by the Report to ensure the integrity of elections. It outlaws requiring voter IDs, it promotes the use of mail-in ballots despite the Report’s warning “Absentee ballots remain the largest source of potential voter fraud” (which is why absentee ballots are strictly limited when not outlawed in Europe), it eliminates the requirement for signature verifications on mailin ballots, it legalizes ballot harvesting which enables votebuying and fraud, and it effectively prevents coordination among the states to ensure accurate voter registration lists (with dead, moved, duplicate, and otherwise unauthorized voters removed). H.R.1 effectively prevents the states accomplishing the Report’s encouragement to “to do more to prevent voter regSee MAILBOAT on 32

Legend Of Ocean Born Mary Citizen Of Londonderry And Henniker

MARCH 166

of the voyage was slow and that the ship had been blown a little off course, but the more traumatic and unexpected event took place as the ship completed the first third of her journey. Another ship was spotted far off in the distance, but as the hours passed by it gradually crept closer and closer to the Irish ship. Finally the crew could discern that it was a Pirate ship, but, lacking any significant gun power, having only a few muskets, they were helpless to defend themselves. Soon a band of pirates in small boats surrounded the ship and proceeded to climb aboard. The See SMITH on 33

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

The violence taking place in northern Ireland that led the Scotch-Irish from Londonderry to seek a more peaceful life in New England, and the pirates that roamed the seas in the 1700’s, and a little added human imagination has given us the legend of Ocean Born Mary. The first group of Scotch-Irish who immigrated to New England in the early years of the eighteenth century split into three groups, one of which ended up in a location in the New Hampshire province which they called Nutfield because of the abundance of nut producing trees. They were a people who were of Scottish background who had lived in Northern Ireland before coming to America. They adhered to the Christian faith but were not Pilgrims, Puritans, or Anglicans, like those who had come to New England before them, or Roman Catholics,

What might have then been called a modern ship, one that was called superior to others that sailed the Atlantic, left Londonderry, Ireland for Boston in the year 1720. Though some claim that the name of the ship is unknown, others tell us it was called the “Wolf,” though others, suggest it was the “Essex.”

There were many wellto-do families on the ship, including James Wilson and his wife, the former Elizabeth Fulton, whom he had married a year previous to the trip. Wilson was one of the passengers who had been granted a plot of land in Nutfield which had organized with a new name, Londonderry, New Hampshire. There was speculation that the first part

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Mount Washington Comes To Concord

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord has a new exhibit- “Home of the World’s Worst Weather” - Mount Washington - to the public. In a new partnership, the Mount Washington Observatory and McAuliffeShepard Discovery Center have combined forces to bring weather and climate science education to Concord, New Hampshire, by relocating, refreshing - and in one case, entirely rebuilding - exhibits from the recently closed Weather Discovery Center in North Conway, NH for display in the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord. Exhibits include everything from the Tornado Tube, which creates a “mini-tornado” right in the Discovery Center’s Planetary Sciences Gallery, to an exhibit on solar power, to the “Shaky Shack”, a replica of the 1930s-era weather station rebuilt by staff and volunteers headed up by Volunteer Paul Higgins of Bedford, NH. In the original weather station, in April 1934 three hardy weather observers, nine cats and two guests on the top of the mountain recorded a record-breaking wind speed of 231 miles per hour; the record remains the highest wind speed ever recorded by human observers. Reservations are required for visits, with numbers of visitors limited for allowance of social distancing. The following timeslots are available for reservations: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 1:30 to 4 p.m., with a special option for at-risk and senior visitors on Friday mornings from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Masks are required, a health check of all staff and volunteers is performed upon arrival, and cleaning stations can be found throughout the Center. Entry to the planetarium and exhibit spaces are reconfigured to allow for social distancing. The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is located at 2 Institute Drive, Concord. (603) 2717827.

Expo On The Road: Barn Evaluation. What Do I Have And How Do I Fix It? The NH Preservation Alliance presents this virtual program on Tuesday. March 30th from Noon1:15pm. Caring for an old barn takes knowledge, skill, and commitment. Ian Blackman, a barn preservation contractor, has years of experience working with barn owners to care for and restore their historic structures. In this program, he will focus on the different styles and periods of barns in New England and outline the problems that are specific to each. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

When Is Ice-Out? It’s almost ice-out here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it is a big deal. by Brendan Smith Yes, things Weirs Times Editor can get a little boring here at times after a long winter. Throw in a pandemic and people are really chomping at the bit. Once winter ends and we have had our fill of snow and cold, we sit impatiently in our homes waiting until ice-out is declared which is a signal for us all to come out of our hibernation. When I first moved here from Long Island, New York, thirtyfive years ago now, the first time I heard that the ice was out I panicked, not sure how I would be able to keep my vodka and tonics chilled in the summer. It didn’t take me long to realize that the call that the ice was out was actually a time for celebration. The lead up to ice-out starts right around March 15th. No one knows when the ice is going to go out, but everyone loves to make a guess since there isn’t much else to do. Lots of businesses hold contests having people predict iceout. If you work in a business that still has a water cooler, you might find yourself standing around it discussing when iceout might be. I’m sure there are more than a few wagers made between friends. Like I said, things can get boring around here in the winter. The actual declaration of iceout occurs when all the ports that the Mount Washington ship travels to on Lake Winnipesaukee are deemed clear of ice. The next day the declaration

of ice-out will be on the front page of all the local papers as well as the lead story on the local television news. We’ll even put our ice out calendar here in The Weirs Times. (It might be in this week, but I haven’t checked yet.) Of course, ice-out is really just symbolic. Not everyone has access to a way to enjoy the lake, but they still know it means that it won’t be long till those supposed lovers of the area, the ones who want nothing to do with us in the winter, will once again be heading up here in droves. It is great for business and, in all honesty, it is what helps keeps this area afloat in many ways during the winter months. So, for those of us without boats or even friends we can suck up to who have them, we understand the symbolism of ice-out, but we don’t really feel the effects until about a week or two after it is declared. Around the time of ice-out, one can usually spot the return of some species of summer birds, most notably the Lake House Birds. Personally, having grown up on Long Island, New York, I wait for the appearance of my favorite summer bird, The Jewel Covered Long Island Squawker to reappear marking the real start of the season. With their long-colored talons and their perfectly coiffed plumage, I know when I spot one or two that it won’t be long until the migration will soon cover the area. In a strange way it brings me a bit of comfort from my original homeland. There are other signs more familiar to us landlubbers (whatever that means) that signal the start of the season. Our own “ice-outs” so to speak. Ice-out is declared when the traffic at the Meredith intersection backs up more than a quarter mile down Rte 25. (There is a chart somewhere that shows the history of this

going all the way back to the 1800s when people decided to start keeping track since it was getting to be annoying waiting in line on manure covered dirt roads.) Ice-out is declared when the emergence of “I Love New Hampshire” and “I Love Winnipesaukee” clothing becomes overwhelmingly apparent. (Spotting clever out of state license plates with the same theme can also be used as a guide.) Ice-out is declared when more than five shopping carts are left strewn about the local supermarkets parking lot on a Friday night. Ice-out is declared when you hear a car horn honk in traffic more than four times in one day. Often it can be from just one overly impatient driver (often a Jewel Covered Long Island Squawker) and ice-out can be declared in a matter of minutes. Ice-out is declared when you have to wait for a table at your favorite restaurant. Still, we do it gratefully knowing it will guarantee us that the restaurant will be around in the winter. Ice-out is declared when the exposure of some human skin, that is better left unexposed, suddenly begins to spring up everywhere you look, like wild weeds. These are just a few of the signs of ice out that landlubbers (still haven’t looked that up) like myself look for so we will know that the season is really upon us. We know that these signs herald the start of another, hopefully busy, tourist season. Brendan is the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles” and “Best Of A F.O.O.L. The ‘Anti-Semitism’ Smear Everything you need to know about the fair-weather “friends” of the First Amendment can be found by examining the phonies on the left and right who hurl reckless charges of “anti-Semitism” to stigmatize and silence their political foes. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, viciously employed this odious tactic last by Michelle Malkin week against the free speech platform, Gab. com, and its 4 million users. Flanked by Syndicated Columnist two GOP state legislators sponsoring a bill to support a state-supported Holocaust and genocide commission, he declared, “Anti-Semitic platforms like Gab have no place in Texas and certainly do not represent Texas values.” This is the same presidential aspirant who just two weeks ago had launched a Lone Star state war on Big Tech censorship. In a widely covered press event, Abbott called Silicon Valley’s deplatforming of conservatives “un-American, un-Texan, and unacceptable.” Abbott’s whiplash-inducing pivot “makes no sense,” Jewish online activist and Gab user Amy Mek of the RAIR Foundation told me. Mek and her family were doxxed by left-wing operatives for her outspoken criticism of Islamic sharia law and terrorism. Hounded by the Southern Poverty Law Center and Huffington Post, and suspended by Twitter for her peaceful political speech, she found a welcoming community at Gab. “I support this Christian-run business,” said Mek. And I “thank them for creating a free-speech platform.” Jewish journalist and “most banned woman in the world” Laura Loomer voiced similar support: “As a free speech platform, the fact that Gab allows for even the most offensive speech to exist on its platform is a testament to its commitment to being a true free speech platform.” So, why did Abbott demonize this “digital Noah’s Ark” (as devout Christian founder Andrew Torba describes it) for censored conservatives and dissidents -- especially when every liberal Big Tech platform has banned the former president of the United States? First, follow the money. Torba notes that while Abbott trashes Silicon Valley for clicks and cable TV hits, he’s aggressively luring high-tech companies (and future campaign donors) like Tesla, Oracle and Hewlett Packard to move to Texas. Then, there’s the pander factor: Independent journalist and lawyer Glenn Greenwald reported that Abbott was “the prime cheerleader for a bill in Texas -- ultimately ruled unconstitutional -- to ban the state from See MALKIN on 36

Wokeifying America’s Military This week, President Biden’s military declared its first war ... on Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson had committed the great sin of pointing out the oddity of the fact that the Biden White House by Ben Shapiro had been promoting Syndicated Columnist brand-new uniforms for pregnant soldiers, rather than America’s military efficiency in the face of a rising Chinese military threat. This prompted spasms of apoplexy from top brass in the military itself: Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said that the Pentagon was filled with “revulsion” at Carlson’s comments, adding, “We absolutely won’t just take personnel advice from a talk show”; Army Sgt. Maj. Michael Grinston tweeted that women “will dominate ANY future battlefield we’re called to fight on,” calling Carlson’s words “divisive”; Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Scott H. Stalker, the senior enlisted leader of the U.S. Space Command, said that Carlson’s opinion was “based off of actually zero days of service in the armed forces.” Now, the military itself recognizes that pregnant women can’t exactly staff frontline positions. At 20 weeks of pregnancy, pregnant soldiers in the Army are exempt from field duty, deployment, wearing individual body armor, standing at parade rest or attention for longer than 15 minutes, or participating in weapons training; upon diagnosis of pregnancy, all pregnant soldiers are exempt from regular physical fitness training. And the military has reported in the past that mixed units underperform allmale combat units. In 2015, a yearlong Marine Corps report found that, according to NPR, “all-male units were faster, more lethal and able to evacuate casualties in less time.” But the content of Carlson’s words was less important than the reaction to them,

for it was unprecedented for top members of the military to unite in excoriating a civilian opinion journalist. Had it happened on former President Trump’s watch, the media undoubtedly would have used it as an example of politics infusing traditionally apolitical institutions. Dark buzzwords like “authoritarian” and “fascist” would have been tossed around casually. Yet when the military was mobilized to attack Carlson, the media cheered instead. We are watching in real time America’s institutions being gutted on behalf of left-wing politics. Formerly apolitical institutions are being remolded top down to reflect the values of our New Ruling Class: those who speak the wokeabulary, who believe in the tyrannical and polarizing theories of Ibram X. Kendi and Kimberle Crenshaw, who see their roles as the social engineers of their fellow Americans. This is true in our universities; it’s true in our colleges; it’s true at our corporations; and now it’s true in the American military. No wonder we’re told that our military will somehow be stronger for tossing out gender-neutral physical fitness tests, or paying for transgender surgeries, or forcing soldiers to read the asinine musings of critical race theorists. Our military is designed to deter and to defend, to kill people and break things. If diversity facilitates that mission, that’s wonderful. But to supplant the military’s chief mission with the woke protocols of the political left is to undermine that chief mission. The world is a dangerous, ugly, competitive place. If our masturbatory woke solipsism blinds us to that reality, the cost will be quite real -- far more real than any supposed threat emanating from the musings of Tucker Carlson. The Woke Awards Oscar nominees were announced this week. The AP highlighted the record number of nominations of “actors of color” and “a record year for women.” by John Stossel Today, such decSyndicated Columnist larations are important in this “woke” media world. Future Oscars will have actual quotas for minority groups. Actor David Oyelowo praised the new standards, saying, “Anyone and everyone who is on that list of marginalized groups that are now going to be

represented, are cheering.” No. Not all are cheering. “Black, white, Asian... none of that should matter,” says musician Eric July in my new video. July, who is Black, complains that quotas cheapen awards. “It’s supposed to be based on merit.” When I told him that director Roseanne Liang calls the new rules “one of the bravest and most amazing things that the Academy has done,” July responded, “No, it’s not. ... It basically turns the award into nothing. They feel sorry for you, so they’re going to... give you an award.” I pushed back, that most Oscar voters are older white men. Even when

movies starring Black people did well (Samuel L. Jackson is America’s highest-grossing actor), award shows gave fewer Oscars to Black performers. July replies, “The hundred-meter dash top 10... all of them are going to be Black people... it doesn’t mean that there is some sort of wrongdoing.” “But what about the legacy of American racism?” I asked. “Of course, it’s a thing -- you can’t say that it isn’t, but this battle was already fought and won... We went off a cliff to where we’re talking as if there’s a Klansman behind every single corner, preventing people from being great.” But in Hollywood, such facts mat-

ter less than wailing about how oppressed you are. Patricia Arquette, accepting a supporting actress award, shouted: “It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States!” The Oscar audience stood and cheered. But American women have equal rights, and there is no wage gap once you factor in job choices. (Men are more eager to work overtime; women more likely to take time off to care for children.) Politics now rules awards shows. Among the Hollywood crowd, what’s See STOSSEL on 37

COVID Pandemic Fear As Strong As Virus More than a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, the world remains shocked and numb to the effects of this “once in a cenby John J. Metzler tury” virus. MilSyndicated Columnist lions have already died, economies have been wrecked, and unemployment and despair is rife. Yet the panacea of vaccines are helping many countries at long last to stabilize the threat, turn the corner and confront the still potent fear factor among citizens. In a single year, Covid has created tectonic economic and political changes; the earth seems to have shifted before us as the once pow-

erful U.S. economy, characterized by high growth and record low unemployment, stalled and started slipping backwards. Europe and Japan froze. Developing countries were decimated. The turmoil and government mandated lockdowns added to the peoples’ gloom. But now it’s Spring; the American economy is reviving due to numerous costly stimulus plans, patches of green hope are sprouting, a significant renewal because of the Vaccines; three separate versions (Pfizer, Moderna, J&J) developed by private industry with strong government incentives during Operation Warp Speed last Summer and Fall. Frankly speaking, without the vaccines people would still be fearful, now there’s selective optimism.

Coordinated vaccine distribution started in the USA late last year; the pace has happily quickened and now 120 million people have the jab. There are three vaccines being used in what has become a necessary and herculean effort for those especially older people who do need the Vaccination. While the U.S. is not yet at “herd immunity” the programs are trending well. Western Europe on the other hand is facing total vaccine disarray; the primary vaccine Astra- Zeneca has worked well in the United Kingdom but faces health fears and hurdles in most of the European Union including France and Germany. Moreover COVID cases are rising as some countries are suspending the use of Astra-Zenca

over fear of suspected blood clots. The European Union’s entire program has been hampered by centralized procurement, supply shortages, and a reluctance of many people, especially in France, to even get the vaccine. Now facing the third wave of Covid cases, the French government has imposed another series of lockdown measures for large parts of the country; nighttime curfews (7PM to 6 AM), travel restrictions, and the need for citizens to carry a two page permission document to do mundane daytime chores in their neighborhood or city. The travel permission document ( I’m not kidding. This is classic French paperwork), can conveniently be put on your Smart Phone to show See METZLER on 37

Honoring The Season We’re In

by Kelly M. Chapman Meredith Whole Living Center

Just over eight years ago, I spent a month on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala working toward my yoga teacher certification. One of the most important lessons I returned with came from a presentation from a fellow classmate on the importance of understanding and honoring the seasons of our lives. As we transition from winter to spring, I’m reminded of the insights she shared and their relevance to this unique moment in time, most importantly because they remind

us to honor where we truly are and not where we believe we ought to be. The first season is spring. This is the time of possibilities. Everything feels exciting, and an abundant and almost overwhelming number of opportunities present themselves. Examples of springtimes in our lives, when we haven’t yet settled on a path, are when exploring courses before choosing a major, expanding career options, and dating. Eventually, spring turns to summer and we commit to a path born of springtime’s possibilities. These are the years we get lost in our careers, relationships and/or childrearing. Summers are often the most comfortable season to be in, as our culture values the confidence, stability

and productivity we’re likely to display while we’re in them. We’re focused, in our stride, and may feel as though the choices we’ve made define who we are to our core. That is until they don’t, which brings us to autumn. The autumns of our lives occur when those parts of us that had once felt so right and secure begin to wind down naturally or lose the vibrancy they once had. We may even begin to get the urge to shake off certain roles or parts of ourselves. Examples of autumns in our lives are gearing up for a last child to leave the home, the decision to move forward with a divorce, or the knowing that it’s time to switch career paths or retire. It’s after these times when winter hits. We regroup, reflect and often grieve. We might

pull back and require additional stillness and solitude. In a culture that values productivity and certainty, winters can be the most uncomfortable season to endure. We might grow impatient or lose hope that springtime will ever come again, until it does. As we welcome our hemisphere’s spring season after the one year anniversary of our world changing beyond our wildest expectations, it’s important to acknowledge that the spring weather may not necessarily signal a springtime in our lives, and that’s OK. We’ve all been stretched and challenged in unique ways this past year, and the unexpected losses and possibilities the pandemic created have left us each in incredibly unique situations that likely would have felt implausible thirteen months ago. By accepting where we are as part of the natural seasons of life, we can let go of reservations or shame around where we are, and honor our unique needs in this moment. We can also have faith that if the current season is an uncomfortable one, it won’t last forever and eventually we’ll find our way back to possibility and choosing. Regardless of which season you find yourself in, be gentle with yourself and consider keeping this framework in mind to normalize future transiSee SEASON on 11

Keep Going. Don’t Give Up. Don’t Settle

by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

I don’t think it is outlandish to say that the past 12 months haven’t been ideal. But we are strong. We all press on. The news continues to deliver a culture of fear, we cannot control that. But we can control our response. As we look around though, it seems we have just paused in life and now play the waiting game. I’m going to ask something big. Keep going. Don’t give up. Don’t settle. It’s hard to say, but one thing seems clear, no matter what we believed or dreamed in as children, there’s an element of adulthood that seems to be a path to unhappiness: settling. Not that you aren’t happy in many ways, but more that we can easily get stuck in a cycle of work, eat, indulge the fear that the media pushes, sleep, repeat. When this happens we begin to suffer and we may not even know it. This idea of settling drove me to a really simple question: how often in life do we quit too early? Isn’t that the essence of settling.

I think most people do “okay” in life. How many do great? How many live the life they want to and how many of us live the life we simply have? I think this can apply in most areas of life: money, health, relationships, career, and dreams. As a chiropractor, this all goes hand in hand with total well being. Remember, as a person you are not a collection of parts, but a whole unit that is a brilliant blend of physical, mental, and spiritual. If one area suffers or lags behind the others then that person will be unwell. I believe most people do have in their possession the wherewithal to achieve better wellness/wholeness and to move closer to the person that they want to be. They simply have to want to change, I mean truly and desperately. So why, instead of pushing on towards the idealization of ourselves, do we pull up short on the journey? The reasons vary but here are a few: we get comfortable where we are, we accept less for ourselves (maybe we think we deserve less), we are scared to fail, we don’t know the next step to take, we don’t believe in ourselves, and perhaps we are simply too impatient (meaning if results are not fast or easy we bail). We’ve all been here I think. I know I have. The point being: we don’t have to be stuck

where we are in life. We can change things to make them better for ourselves. This list of reasons are all easily countered. Ask yourself: have I quit too early on the life I want and if I did, why? Take a cold hard look at yourself. Knock down the illusions that we hide behind and answer honestly. Then turn the reasons to quit on their ear. Know that you are worth earning your goals. Understand that it’s okay to be scared and in all probability there will be failures along the way and results won’t be instantaneous, keep pushing. If you are unsure of how to proceed on the path ahead of you, seek someone who has been there and ask for help. The hardest part is making an honest assessment of ourselves, after that it’s simply the courage to jump and go for it. Ultimately, the end goal doesn’t have to be huge (though it can be). Rather, it has to be positive. It has to improve your life. If you can do this then you will improve the lives of others around you as well. We need healthy people in our communities. People who are physically healthy, but also mentally happy, and spiritually satisfied. People who are passionately chasing their goals. This is true health and a worthy ideal. This is health you can’t buy or gain through external means. This is health earned and built by you. You’re

the one swinging the hammer. It only takes a little courage and a lot of grit. A never say die mentality will take you a long way towards success. Don’t let anyone dictate that for you. Not the media, circumstances, or obstacles. We are still the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Can Mushroom Microdose Help With Depression? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am battling depression and have a question about psilocybin. I stopped taking Effexor for my depression be-

cause I did not like the side effects. I also tried SAM-e, which had only a small effect. So, for the past three months I have been trying cognitive behavioral therapy, using certain tactics. I’ve cut back my days of work and avoid all news when not on the job. I stringently avoid social media. I don’t put myself into situations that I know will upset me. I am also limiting my alcohol consumption. Lately I’ve been reading about how microdosing the psilocybe mushroom can elevate or change moods for the better. I would like to know your opinion on the use of psilocybin for depression. It seems to be gaining traction, but my fear is that it can bring on degrees of psychosis. -- S.M. ANSWER: I found two studies on psilocybin, a naturally occurring chemical in 200 or so

species of mushrooms, especially those of the genus psilocybe. One study from 2016 was in 29 people with cancer, and anxiety and depression: 60%-80% had “clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety.” Another study (also from 2016) treated 12 patients with treatment-resistant depression with two doses of psilocybin, and their depression scores were reduced by more than half at five weeks. All 12 patients had adverse effects, usually mild, such as headache, nausea or confusion. Two patients had paranoia. All adverse effects lasted less than a day. While I am optimistic that this might lead to an additional option for therapy, these are very small studies. Further, the authors of the second study note “patients have taken pharmaceutical grade compounds of known strength and

purity, under the supervision of trained therapists.” The authors and research institution “cannot advise on the procurement of illegal psychoactive substances, nor can we recommend self-medication.” I can’t emphasize that enough. DEAR DR. ROACH: Someone I know, who is a nurse, mentioned to me that she had Lyme disease about 15 years ago. She said her doctor at the time told her that if she gets it again, she will die. Is this true? I would have thought some immunity would be gained once you have it. She is completely healed and said she has no health issues associated with it. -- D.S. ANSWER: Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, and is spread by the deer tick. There are many manifestations of Lyme disease, including rash, many nonspecific symptoms, and late symptoms such as arthritis. Death from Lyme disease is rare, and is usually a result of carditis, which is heart inflammation. This happens in about 1% of cases of Lyme disease. There were nine cases of fatal Lyme carditis reported between 1985 and 2018. People who are treated early for Lyme disease, such as those get the classic bull’s-eye rash, do not get immunity to See HEALTH on 11

HEALTH from 10 Lyme. However, people who have had Lyme long enough to develop arthritis do develop some resistance to future episodes. Unfortunately, we are still at least several years away from a Lyme vaccine. I could find nothing to support a significant risk of death from people who get Lyme disease a second (or subsequent) time, so I think you can reassure your friend. DEAR DR. ROACH: I read an article about a study the Mayo Clinic did using 20 mg tablets of sildenafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension and that it improved walking distance by 75%. Is there an upper age limit for a person using this medication for pulmonary hypertension? -- D.L. ANSWER: Pulmonary hypertension is different from regular or systemic high blood pressure. It’s not the kind that is measured with a blood pressure cuff. In pulmonary hypertension, the elevated pressures are inside the lungs. There are five general classes of pulmonary hypertension, and people must undergo extensive diagnostic testing to determine which subclass they have. The goal is to find a cause that has a specific treatment. For example, subclass 2 is pulmonary hypertension due to heart disease of the left side of the heart, such as heart failure or valvular heart disease. Treating those can make the pulmonary hypertension better. However, many peo-

ple do not have a treatable underlying cause that can be identified, so doctors rely on general treatments to improve symptoms. One such is sildenafil, which is called Revatio when used for pulmonary hypertension, but it is the same drug as Viagra. It prolongs the effect of nitric oxide, a chemical in the blood that relaxes blood vessels in the lungs and reduces pressure. Sildenafil, like other drugs in the same class, significantly improved the distance a person could walk in six minutes. The 75% increase you noted is higher than most studies showed, however. The study included subjects up to 81 years old. I do not think age alone would be a reason not to use these kinds of medications. These medicines should not be used in people taking nitrates (such as nitroglycerine) or those with very low systemic blood pressure.

SEASON from 8 tions you may have. In the years since my time in Guatemala, I’ve been comforted many times simply by being reminded that it’s entirely natural to go through these phases in life and that I’m not

alone in experiencing them. I hope it does the same for you. Kelly Chapman, M.A., is the Owner of Meredith Whole Living Center and Certified Authentic Leadership Coach.

Sportaversaries by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Life used to be much simpler in terms of special days. We had our birthdays, anniversaries, and major holidays. But life is more complex now. We now have Siblings Day on April 10 in addition to Mothers Day on May 9. Groundhogs Day is still Feb. 2 but Feed the Birds Day is Feb. 3. April Fools Day is still April—which is also Atheists Day. Flag Day is June 14 but National Prune Day is June 15. On and on. This year’s National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, Sept. 12. Don’t forget to send cards. March is Women’s History Month. But it’s also Irish Heritage Month, Music in Schools Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Nutrition Month, Red Cross Month, Social Workers Month, and National Craft Month. It’s also National Peanut Month. Then there are those “Days.” March 1 is National Pig Day, for example. March 14 is Pi Day. (Get it?) March 15 is National Buzzards Day. March 18 is Goddess of Fertility Day—perhaps my new March favorite, next to March 17, which is,

On October 21, 1975, Carlton Fisk won World Series Game #6 against the Reds with a 12th inning homer. of course, St. Patrick’s Day. This being the March 25 issue, we should probably do a nod to National Waffle Day. So perhaps the last thing we need is a new “day.” But hear me out. What about a personal “Sportaversary Day,” where individuals can celebrate their favorite sports memory. It could be Carlton Fisk’s World Series homer. (Oct. 21). Or Larry Bird Steals the Ball. (May 26.) It could be your first hole-inone. (I’m still waiting for mine.) It could be the day your kid got their first soccer goal. February 8. That’s the day my parents saw my first college basketball game at Plymouth State. I’d transferred to PSC from a university and had to sit out two semesters. I earned a spot on the team and came off the bench in an away game on Feb. 1. So on February 8 Plymouth hosted archrival Keene State and Dad and Mom made the long trip from Groveton to Plymouth to watch. I wondered if I’d play. If so, how much would I play? How well would I play? I didn’t want to disappoint my folks. I ended up as a surprise starter, and scored eight of my team’s first 17 points. Plymouth won an 8885 thriller over KSC

As a result, you fall for anything. Take a moment even now and look back at your past and even at your present life and you will identify untold suffering, sadness and unnecessary pain as a result of rejecting me and my wisdom. Before I created your first parents, Adam & Eve, I warned them that if they disobeyed me and rejected me, they would be separated from the life I possess and that I alone can give them (Genesis 2:17). I knew that they would be tempted and deceived by another of my creation, Lucifer. He too abandoned me and has corrupted his life and is on his own death march. I knew he would tempt you to follow him instead of me because he has so much hatred in his heart, he wants to take others with him (1 Peter 5:8). His name I gave him was Apollyon, the “destroyer.” I also knew he was too powerful for you. I was prepared to strengthen Adam & Eve, but they never sought me. They believed his lies and thought they could become “gods” and enjoy life without me, the source of life. They were deceived and

In order for you to be restored, your sins must be removed and paid for. You can’t do this, for you are already imperfect and impotent. It was precisely for this reason that I sent a substitute to pay your penalty. I sent my son, Jesus, the Messiah, who was sinless and was able therefore to take your penalty upon himself, so that he could give you forgiveness (John 3:16). Once forgiven, you can be restored to me your loving “Dad,” and I can fix your brokenness and pain and pour out my love and wisdom and once again give you life, now and for eternity. Sightings From Readers by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

Woodcock are being seen and heard at dusk, phoebes are showing up slowly but steadily, mixed flocks of blackbirds are headed north and the weather is sunny and warm one day and freezing and wet the next. It must be March in New England. As we get ready for migration to pick up steam, here’s what readers have been reporting over the last few weeks. Bill from Keene wrote to say he’s hearing spring songs from the woods, which is always a good sign and pleasing chorus. Spring peepers, wood frogs and some birds are starting to call. I’ve heard cardinals almost daily now, which is a most welcomed, cheerful song. Jeannie from Marlow wrote to say she has had upwards of four red-breasted nuthatches visiting her feeders at once. I thought my two-at-a-time visits were good. Jeannie also sent along a terrific photo of a barred owl having its feathers blown around by a strong wind. The photo may be found at www.birdsofnewengland.com under the “Reader Submitted Photos” category. Jane from Marlborough wrote in questioning whether a small bird of prey she saw take a chickadee could be

While most types of birds have declined in numbers, woodpeckers have increased their population in the U.S. and Canada over the last 50 years, according to a 2019 study. Here, a red-breasted woodpecker grabs a peanut from a feeder. a merlin. Merlins are small falcons that breed mostly north of New Hampshire, but some do breed in the state and many pass through during fall and spring migrations. So it is very possible that her bird in question was a merlin. Here’s what the N.H. Fish and Game website says about the merlin’s range: “Expanding range southward in NH. Currently breeds in the north and at scattered locations in central and western parts of the state. Occurs statewide during migration which peaks during September and early October; occasionally winters along the seacoast or in southern suburban areas.”

Thanks to the Keene Lions Club for having me as a guest speaker via Zoom last week at its meeting. I enjoyed meeting everyone virtually and appreciated the many thoughtful questions at the end. A question was posed that I didn’t have the answer for at the moment. I had referenced early in the presentation the 2019 study that shows there has been a decline of 2.9 billion birds in the U.S. and Canada over the last 50 years. The question came up as to what percentage that number represented. I thought it was a great question as numbers are sometimes presented to show a point but proper con-

text is missing. I looked back at the study and found out that the 2.9 billion missing birds represent a 28 percent decline -roughly down from 10 billion adult breeding birds to 7 billion. That is a substantial number no matter how you look at it, but when you consider birds of certain habitats have declined by more than 50, the number becomes even more stark. Grassland birds, for instance, have declined by 53 percent since 1970, according to the study. That is fewer than half of the meadowlarks, bobolinks and more of our favorite grassland birds remainSee BOSAK on 36

The term Imperial has been used a lot lately in the beer world. It refers to something bigger than the rest. In India Pale Ales, there are traditional IPA’s that ranges around 5% ABV, then Double IPA that kicks it up to over 7+% and finally Imperial (or Triple) which is above 8%. Most think the term comes from an English standard, somehow relating to the Imperial unit of measure but not so here. And this is not to be confused with the Metric system. It implies superior and larger than most others. Well, now we are getting somewhere. Imperial beer embraces the luxury of bigness. More flavor, mouthfeel, aromas and larger ABV. Now that we are up to speed on Imperial, lets examine our focus beer of the week from Portland, Maine. Lone Pine Brewing Company has been making great beer for New England since 2016 in the Bayside neighborhood of Portland. JUST GOOD FOOD!

I seldom prepared or served lamb until I tasted Australian lamb. The tenderness and variety of cuts of Australian lamb opens up the opportunity to serve lamb all year long, not just in the spring. I love slowly braising lamb shanks, marinading and flashfrying lamb chops, and using ground lamb in stews, sauces and forming them into patties. Lamb is the meat from young sheep that are less than a year old. Americans eat far less of this delicious meat than people in other countries. about the meat having a strong “gamey” flavor. Current labeling laws often allow a confusing number of packaging terms as it pertains to lamb, including “natural,” “pasture-raised” or “grass-fed.” These terms are allowed even

though the animal may not spend any time in a natural setting, in a pasture or grazing on grass. The label to look for to purchase the best-quality lamb meat is either “100% grassfed,” “organic-100% grass-fed lamb” or

“100% grass-fed.” This type of lamb has a buttery, tender quality. Australian lamb can be found in most American markets and is generally available in five different cuts: the shoulder, rack, shank/ breast, loin and leg. “Rack of lamb” usually refers to a rib cut that includes nine ribs and can be split into rib roasts. Lamb “chops” can come from several different cuts. For example, “rib chops” come from the rib, and “loin chops” come from the loin. You might also see “blade” and “arm” chops in the meat section of the grocery; these chops come from the shoulder. Sirloin chops come from the leg. Additionally, many stores sell lamb that has already been ground and can be used to make burgers, meat loaf or sauces. 100% grass-fed lamb is a significant source of B vitamins and niacin. It also is an excellent source of omega-3 fats, dependent upon the diet of the mother and the lamb. Grass-fed lamb has been shown to average at least 25% more omega-3 fats than conventionally fed lamb. Consumption of omega-3 fats has been associated with decreased risk of inflammation and heart disease. In Australia, where lamb is raised in abundance and eaten regularly, recent studies show it as the top ome— ga-3 food in the daily See LAMB on 19

Late Season Chaos by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

Warm water fish spawn in the spring. The length of daylight in March, accompanied by increased oxygen levels from snow and ice melt, triggers fish to form large schools as they anticipate the coming spawn that will occur in the shallows after iceout. This is the absolute best time of the year to fish for white perch. Several small schools will join to form large schools. These huge schools of fish have one thing on their minds this time of year…food! They need to eat before the spawn, and they’re after hatching insects in the mud and smelt. Finding schools of pre-spawn white perch means nonstop action that sometimes lasts all day. When I am fishing for white perch, you will usually see me sitting over a basin or on an inside turn as the sun rises. To clarify, a basin is a depression, and an inside turn is like an underwater cove. I focus on areas 25 to 30-feet of water. Zooplankton rise from the bottom at dusk and feed until the sun begins to rise at dawn. This concentration of plankton draws baitfish, which in turn draws white perch. Basins can be fished early and late in the day since zooplankton concentrations will be highest then and the bowl-like feature of the basin will hold the plankton and baitfish in

Fish tacos anyone? White perch are also great eating fish. that area, but they can also serve as a resting place for well-fed white perch, so basins are always worth a look as far as I’m concerned. Other areas to try are deep coves with feeder streams. Warmer temperatures and longer days in March create runoff from melting snow. The only good source of oxygen this time of year will come from streams carrying oxygen-rich water and microorganisms into the lake. As smelt begin to stage in shallow water, they will congregate in these areas and the white perch will follow. Coves will be hot and cold however, because the fish will move in and feed until they run the bait out. Then it will take some time for the bait to return and the process to repeat.

My go-to lures are a size twelve white and orange Epoxy Drop or a 1/8 ounce Blade Spoon with a single hook from Clam Pro Tackle, tipped with three or four spikes (maggots) or a tiny piece of worm. The tungsten Epoxy Drop sinks fast, getting you back down to the fish quickly, which is important when a school moves in. The color really depends on the water clarity and light conditions. On bright days use bright colors, on dark days use dark colors, and in stained water use neutral colors. Other great lures are the Daddy Mac Elite Ice and Blade jigs. March white perch fishing is a blast. This is your best chance at catching big numbers of big fish. When my ice fishing clients get into that kind of fishing

and the fish are in the two-pound range, they usually start planning their return trip before they are done catching. Most anglers enjoy the See MOORE on 24

What Is The Difference Between A Lake And A Pond? by Andrea LaMoreaux NH Lakes

One of the most common questions I get as a limnologist is, “What is the difference between a lake and a pond?” If you are like most folks, you probably think that lakes are bigger and deeper than ponds— this isn’t always the case! (Incidentally, the second-most common question I get is, “What is a ‘Limnologist?’”—a limnologist is a scientist who studies freshwater including lakes and ponds.)

In New Hampshire, there are many examples of a waterbody being called a “pond” when it is larger and deeper than another waterbody called a “lake.” For example, Loon Pond in Gilmanton is 49 acres in surface area and 45 feet at Boating & Rec its deepest point, while Loon Lake in Plymouth is 45 acres in surface area and its maximum depth is only 29 feet! SPRING INTO LAKES from 22 ite lake or pond get its name? In New Hampshire, the naming of a waterbody as a “lake” or a “pond” is arbitrary— most were named by the early settlers who lived nearby. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services reports that many lakes and ponds have had official name changes over the years. Most name changes have involved changing from a “pond” to a “lake” in an attempt to make the waterbody sound more attractive to home buyers and visitors. Examples of ponds that are now called lakes include “Mud Pond” to “Mirror Lake” in Canaan, “Mosquito Pond” to “Crystal Lake” in Manchester and “Dishwater Pond” to “Mirror Lake” in Tu ftonboro. (By the way, I have heard of groups who want to change the name of their waterbody from a “lake” to a “pond” so that it will sound less attractive to visitors!) Is there a legal difference between a lake and a pond? In New Hampshire, for legal purposes, there is no difference between a “lake” and a “pond.” However, to make matters more con-fusing, if a lake or pond in New Hampshire is 10 acres or greater in size, then it is considered a “Great Pond”—a water-body that is regulated by the state and subject to state water quality laws.

Is there a scientific difference between a lake and a pond? In a limnologist’s point of view, here is a difference between a “lake” and a “pond.” But, to add to the confusion, the distinction between a “lake” and a “pond” is not always the same for every limnologist. Some limnologists say that a waterbody which has rooted plants growing throughout should be classified as a “pond” since it is shallow enough for sunlight to reach the bottom in all areas. These same scientists would say that a “lake” is a water-body that only has rooted plants growing around its edges, since it is too deep for sunlight to shine on the entire bottom. However, I have found that these definitions do not always hold true—I have visited “ponds” that are 10 to 15 feet deep with brown, murky water where it is too dark for rooted plants to grow on the bottom and I have visited deeper “lakes” with crystal clear water where rooted plants grow throughout. Other limnologists define the difference using temperature. During the summer, if a waterbody is deep enough to stratify into three distinct layers, with one warm layer on top, one cold layer at the bottom and a layer of rapidly changing temperature in between (called a “thermocoline”), then it is a “lake,” while a waterbody with one or two See LAKES on 24

SPRING INTO

BOATING SEASON!

T en Ways To Prevent Fuel Spills 1. Make sure that you’re putting fuel into the correct tank. GEICO | BoatUS Marine Insurance receives claims each year from someone pumping fuel into a rod holder or water tank.

4. Use absorbent sheets or pads around the fuel pump nozzle while transferring it from the dock to the boat and while filling to prevent splashes marking boat decks and leaking into the water.

2. Fill tanks only to about 95% capacity to allow for expansion and sloshing as the boat moves.

5. Listen carefully. It’s often possible to hear when the fuel is getting closer to the top of the tank.

3. Do not top off the tank. The boat’s movement may cause fuel to leak from the tank vent, causing pollution.

6. Hold (or have someone else hold) a highly absorbent rag or fuel absorbent pad at the fuel tank’s air vent to absorb any spill-

age from the vent. Or consider purchasing a fuel-vent collection device that sticks on the outside of the boat with suction cups and will hopefully collect any fuel that happens to find its way out of the vent. But if there is ANY question of this type of device adhering to the hull, have someone hold it in place. 7. Consider installing a whistle in the fuelvent line, designed to make noise as long as fuel is flowing. As soon as the tank is full, the whistle stops, and you

know it’s full. 8. Don’t let the higher pump speed catch you unaware. Many pumps at fuel docks fill at a much quicker rate than those at the local gas station to allow boats that often have large fuel tanks to fill faster. 9. Regularly check your fuel system for leaks. Not only is this a fire and explosion hazard, but if fuel leaks into the bilge, it may be pumped over the side by the bilge pump. 10. Replace the gas cap after fueling, and

maintain the gasketing around the cap. Fuel In The Bilge Not all oil pollution occurs while filling the boat with fuel. Bilge water often contains oil, grease, and fuel. To prevent this oily water from being pumped out of the boat by the bilge pump, consider placing oil-absorbent sheets under inboard engines. A couple of oil absorbent bilge socks or sausages in the lowest part of the bilge close to the bilge pump pickup (but not interfering with the pickup or switch) will go a long

way to preventing dirty bilge water from polluting waterways. Tip If you have a gasoline inboard engine, run the blower for at least 4 minutes — more is better — after filling the tank to disperse explosive vapors before attempting to start the engine. The blower and its switch should be ignition-protected and designed for the purpose.

Expand Your Planting Space by Melinda Myers When your plant list is longer than the available gardening space it is time to expand your planting options. Create new gardening space by adding raised bed gardens, elevated planters, and containers wherever space allows. Convert the end of the drive or edge of the patio into raised bed gardens. Just use a raised bed liner to contain the soil. Raising the garden makes planting, maintaining and harvesting easier on the back and knees. It also allows you to create the perfect soil foundation by filling your raised bed with a quality planting mix. Long lasting cedar is a traditional choice for raised beds. (NewsUSA) – Shiplap – the wall treatment favored by popular home improvement shows – is filling Pinterest boards and continues to top the to-do lists of today’s savvy DIYers. Even high-end homebuilders are incorporating it into their upmarket designs. And when crafting a custom shiplap wall, the pros are choosing cypress because of its practicality and stunning good looks. Shiplap Defined Shiplap has long been a popular siding pattern for the exterior of homes. Nowadays, design pros are bringing it indoors as paneling to create a rustic, farmhouse vibe, or to highlight contemporary flair.”Typically, what homeowners refer to as shiplap is simply run-of-themill boards nailed on a wall, with a small gap separating them,” says Zack Rickman of the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association, www.CypressInfo. org.”Actually, shiplap is a board pattern with L-shaped notches on the top and bottom edges. When installed, the boards overlap with a gap, presenting a more authentic, high-end look. And while the size of the gap is adjustable – depending on homeowner preference – nickel gap is arguably the most popular size with a six- or eight-inch shiplap board.” Stylish

Spring Maintenance Checklist For Homeowners As the weather warms, there are a few maintenance tasks every homeowner should consider completing. Use this checklist as your guide: Outdoor Upkeep • Wash window exteriors for a better view. • Clean gutters and downspouts to ensure proper water flow. Neglecting this task for too long can cause rot, mold and damage to your foundation. • Get your patio or deck in tip-top shape for outdoor living. Sweep and hose it down. Remove patio furnishings from storage. Wipe down surfaces and vacuum cushions (or launder

them if they’re machine washable).

• Inspect lawn equipment and tools for needed maintenance, repair and fuel refills. • Mow the lawn. Trim the edges. • After the next rainfall, inspect your yard for standing water, which can damage your home and invite mosquitoes. Consider hiring a landscaper to level out an uneven lawn. HVAC Maintenance • Change HVAC filters at least once each season (ideally monthly). Dirty filters make equipment work harder and cause more wear and tear on equipment. They also increase your energy

bill and lessen indoor air quality. • According to Energy Star, 20-30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system of a typical home is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. Consider professional duct sealing for improved energy efficiency and lower bills. • Check to see whether your furnaces and air conditioners bear the ENERGY STAR logo. If not, consider a new unit. A properly-sized and installed ENERGY STAR air conditioner uses up to 20 percent less electricity than older models, and doing so may make you eligible for a Federal Tax See SPRING on 31

mingbirds to watch and enjoy. Extend your time outdoors with outdoor lighting. Or look for multifunctional options like solar illuminated planters. Powered by the sun and with a flip of a switch, you can choose a single or multi-changing light color display. Don’t let the thought of frequent watering stop you from growing in containers and elevated gardens. Self-watering options are available in a variety of shapes and sizes including the classic, yet curvy selfwatering Valencia window box. Once you select your raised bed, elevated garden, or container, you will need to fill it with a planting or potting mix. Figure out exactly how much is needed with a soil calculator. Just plug the size and shape into the form. It tells you how many cubic yards or cubic feet of soil are needed for raised beds and the number of quarts for containers and elevated gardens. Expanding the garden doesn’t have to mean a lot more work. Selecting the right option that provides convenience and ease of care can help you grow more flowers and garden-fresh produce this season.

Credit. • Have a technician give your home’s cooling system a pre-season tune-up so that everything is running efficiently by the time warmer weather arrives. You know the “personality” of your heating or cooling unit best, so be prepared to provide the technician with important information. No fact is insignificant, as it may help them diagnose and fix a problem. • Be sure that all HVACR installation and maintenance is performed only by a qualified professional. Read company reviews and ask the contractor if they have technicians certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE). NATE-certified technicians have demonstrated knowledge of today’s increasingly sophisticated heating and cooling systems. To find a NATE-certified technician in your area, visit Natex.org.

Safety • Carbon monoxide, often referred to as the “silent killer,” is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Protect your family by changing the batteries on your carbon monoxide detectors and ensuring you have a detector on each level of your home. When changing a furnace filter, make sure the new filter is correctly positioned and the access panel is securely fastened. Have your home’s furnace inspected and serviced annually by a NATE-certified technician. • Likewise, test all the smoke alarms in your home and replace batteries as needed. The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms on every level of the home, including every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. A little seasonal maintenance can go a long way to a safer, more beautiful and more eco-friendly home.

CRAZE from 29 paneling products, Moleski prefers working with cypress.”Solid cypress and shiplap make a perfect match,” he explains. “Not only is the wood local to my area and affordable, the wood’s intriguing grain pattern makes it remarkably beautiful.”For budgetconscious homeowners, Moleski offers this cost-saving tip: “As an alternative to using select grade cypress,

consider rough-sawn no.2 grade and install it with the smooth side facing out,” he says. “It’ll achieve a similar look with some added character at a lower cost.” Finishing Flexibility Fred Lewers, Palm West Home Builders in Palm Coast, Florida, says options abound when it comes to selecting a finish for a cypress shiplap wall.”Cypress can be finished in a variety of ways,” Lewers says.

“Stain it to highlight its natural grain and texture, or paint it to add a pop of color. You also can use a whitewashing technique for a truly unique appearance. My preference is to leave it natural, and let the wood’s beauty shine.”Regardless of your desired look, Rickman offers one piece of important finishing advice. “Look for an oil-based stain, or paint and primer system,” he says.”Water-

based products sit on the surface and are prone to cracking and peeling. Oilbased products soak into the wood, providing superior protection and performance, especially in wet zones like bathrooms.”Take it from the professionals: Shiplap is not just a design craze; it’s here to stay. For ideas on building a cypress shiplap wall, visit www. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 25, 2021 — SMITH from 3 pirates tied up both the crew and the passengers and removed their valuables to their ship. Finally, the pirate captain went to the officer’s quarters and opening the door to the cabin saw a woman lying on a berth. He asked her what she was doing there, and, in answer, the woman lifted the blanket that covered her, said “See,” and revealed a new born baby. Reportedly he then asked, “Is it a boy or a girl?” The mother answered, “A girl.” “Have you named her?” “No,” was the reply. The scene brought out some tender feelings within the rough and tough pirate captain, and, as he held the baby’s tiny hand he told the mother that if she would let him name the baby he would untie the prisoners and return their valuables to the ship. Though treated roughly, none of them had been killed. The mother, Elizabeth Wilson, agreed to let the pirate name the baby. The pirate said, concerning the baby, “Her name is Mary,” and then ordered his crew to carry out the promise he had made to the new mother. The Boston bound passengers were relieved to have the pirates gone and to once again be safe, only to see the pirate ship turn back towards the “Wolf” (if that indeed was the ship’s name.) This time, however, only the captain, who has been said to be Don Pedro, came on board. However, he obviously wasn’t the infamous Don Pedro who didn’t come on the scene until the 1800’s and was hanged for his pirate activities. This pirate went back to the cabin where he gave the mother, Elizabeth

Grave of Mary (Ocean Born) Wallace in Henniker, Wilson, a piece of silk material that, according to one source, had a woven plaid pattern of red and green with white lines throughout. Others refer to the material as being of a light green color. The pirate’s message to the young mother was, “Let Mary wear this on her wedding day.” Ocean Born Mary was born in July of 1720. The ship landed in Boston, but, sadly, the baby’s father, James Wilson, died soon afterwards. His wife took their child and went to Londonderry where she claimed the land granted to her husband. There Elizabeth Fulton Wilson married again to another immigrant from Ireland, one James Clark, who became the great, great grandfather of Horace Greeley. It was at Londonderry where Ocean Born Mary lived for a large portion of her life. Mary was reportedly a tall (6 +feet) stately, green-eyed, red-headed woman when she married James Wallace on December 18, 1742, and wore a wedding

dress made from the green silk cloth given to her by the pirate. The couple had five living children, four sons and one daughter. They were named Thomas, Robert, William, James, and Elizabeth. Three of the sons were married to three sisters. It is the town of Henniker, New Hampshire,

however, that is closely associated with Ocean Born Mary and where the facts get seriously mixed up with the unsubstantiated stories of her life. Mary’s husband died in 1791 and she moved to Henniker on July 6, 1798 at the age of 78 where she lived with her son, William. Another son,

Robert, lived a half mile away, but she was said to not have been on the best of terms with him. Sometime after Mary died in 1814 the house in which she had lived was destroyed by fire and the house in which her son, Robert had built was bought by a man named Louis “Gus” Roy who lived there with his mother. Stories began to circulate about Ocean Born Mary, particularly that the house was haunted by her ghost, even though she had never lived in that house. Furthermore there was speculation that the pirate, called Don Pedro, had somehow found Mary when she was living in Henniker and may have even married her. It was rumored that he had been murdered in the house and was buried in the yard or under the hearthstone along with treasure that he had accumulated on the high seas during his pirate activities. Mr. Roy, with the help of his mother, opened

the house for tourists to learn about Ocean Born Mary and her pirate benefactor. He capitalized on the stories to the extent of renting shovels to visitors and allowing them to dig in the back yard in search of pirate treasure. There were efforts even to find his bones on the property, but without success. It has thus been established that there was indeed an Ocean Born Mary, whose life was spared, and probably that of many others, because the sight of a new born baby on a ship whose passengers were heading for Londonderry, New Hampshire from Ireland, softened the heart of a hardened pirate. Mary lived a, perhaps, somewhat typical life for the times, in Londonderry, for 78 years. That may or may not have been so in the years in Henniker, but whatever did or didn’t happen in Henniker, the legend lives on.

As we progress through this pandemic with hope, anticipating coming through the other side as a once again healthy, vibrant society, we would be remiss in not reminding people considering adopting, that while they may be home for now— working from home or laid off until returning to work, it is of paramount importance to consider all the vital factors of adopting a companion pet of any kind, and ensuring that once one commits to an adoption it is a commitment for life. It’s not easy to stay looking forward, to cling to a vision in the face of such bleakness. So why do we do it? Why do we stay looking forward? Beat on, boats against the current? Cling to the vision? MALKIN from 6 hiring anyone who refuses to pledge support for Israel (by promising not to privately boycott them). He’s an enemy of free speech.” The Israeli government has lobbied governors and state legislatures across America to adopt these anti-boycott, anti-free speech laws. That’s not “America First.” Finally, there’s the power play. The Texas Republican Party itself has a verified Gab account and backs the platform. The state party is led by Abbott’s chief political rival and enormously populist party chairman, Allen West. What better way to neutralize a potential primary challenge than to level the nuclear “antiSemitism” bomb? As Nick Fuentes, AFPAC organizer and “America First” host,

put it: “Gab vs. Abbott is the ultimate ‘America First’ litmus test.” He’s now banned from almost 30 platforms, including YouTube, DLive and Clubhouse, over the very same trumped-up charges of “anti-Semitism” wielded against Gab and Torba. Last week, the mere mention of his name as a hashtag was banned on TikTok and Instagram: “I am being systematically erased from the digital world and with me goes the possibility of meaningful dissent against the political establishment in America.” We’re all in this together. When I accurately called liberal billionaire George Soros a “globalist,” the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt railed that I was using “a term that right-wing extremists and white

supremacists use as a codeword for ‘Jew.’” When I named several Soros-subsidized, tax-exempt nonprofit “charities” flooding our country with illegal immigrant criminals and cheap labor while on my “Open Borders, Inc.” book tour, Media Matters of America (itself a Soros-backed hate machine) accused me of deploying a “common anti-Semitic trope.” When I documented the vast reach and power the United Nations has to dump hundreds of thousands of refugees across America’s heartland, Media Matters blared in a headline that I pushed an “anti-Semitic conspiracy theory that motivated Tree of Life synagogue shooter.” When I stood up for intelligent and polite young men on college

campuses who challenged Turning Point USA speakers about their defense of open borders, green card giveaways, unconditional foreign aid to Israel and the bombing of the USS Liberty, I was denounced by establishment conservatives as insane, fame-seeking, money-grubbing, white supremacist-flirting, “Holocaust Denial”-promoting, and, of course, “anti-Semitic.” My Jewish husband got a huge chuckle out of all of that. And it goes on. When I spoke at the first American First Political Action Conference last year and pointed out how “anti-Semitism” had become a “useless, meaningless term and everybody knows it,” the Jewish News Syndicate gathered all the shrill shills’ demands to “shun” and “disavow”

me under the headline: “Conservatives rebuke Malkin for questioning what is ‘anti-Semitic.’” Questioning, naming and debating are not acts of “anti-Semitism.” They are acts of honest journalism and patriotism. The smear machine can and will be defeated by a united front of dissidents who preach and practice Gab’s motto -- “Speak Freely” -- without fear or apology. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, March 25, 2021 — METZLER from 7 the police etc. Despite good intentions, this is all about control. In Germany there are now lockdowns in major cities such as Hamburg. Throughout Germany there have been demonstrations against Covid regulations. COVID cases are still spiking; Italy has registered over 100,000 deaths. France is near that number too. Britain, with the best vaccination program still has over 127,000 deaths and the National Health Service stands at breaking point. Contrary to last year, the virus is now ravishing parts of Central Europe such as Hungary, and Poland. Yet Hungary and Poland have among Europe’s highest vaccination rates. There are two key points here. Many European countries such as France have well funded and bloated national health systems which somehow can’t handle the crisis. Yet fewer than 4 percent of the French are vaccinated with 4 percent representing Italy, Spain and Germany. The USA by contrast has over 12 percent of the population fully vaccinated or 41 million people. Yet there’s another issue here. The pandemic and its aftershocks clearly played a significant role in spilling the electoral game board in the United States last year; Joe Biden’s election would have been highly unlikely had it not been for the political tsunami of the pandemic. Now as events are unfolding, don’t be surprised if Germany, holding national par-

liamentary elections in September without the redoubtable Chancellor Angela Merkel running, could see an electoral surprise. Equally French President Emmanuel Macron faces elections next year; will the undertow of the moribund economy, the pandemic, and general social dissatisfaction shake the status quo? Given the way the European Union has dropped the ball on vaccine distribution, there’s widespread criticism in many countries. Anti-EU sentiments, smoldering all along and mirroring Britain’s Brexit movement, can easily be stoked. In the USA continuing Covid restrictions place high costs on doing business, often irrational rules on business such as in New York and California restaurants, and control of the population through state government mandates. The Sky is no longer falling, but there’s still a long way to go. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. moral is pushing for a giant government that passes ever more wellintended rules, no matter how expensive and ineffective the result. I won 19 Emmys criticizing capitalists. I won zero awards once I started criticizing government. Today’s awards celebrate people who love big intrusive government. Last year, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was given an Emmy for his COVID-19 press conferences. Cuomo accepted the award via Zoom, praising himself for offering “authentic truth,” even though he’d lied about the number of people who died because of his policies. “Don’t expect the governor of Florida to get one of those awards,” says July. The Grammy Awards are eager to praise Democrats. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Jimmy Carter all got Grammys for reading their audiobooks. President Carter got a bunch. Democrats were nominated for 19 Grammys since 2000. No Republicans were nominated. “A lot of these awards just shouldn’t even be seen as legitimate on that alone,” says July. Today’s award shows aren’t about recognizing what’s best. They’re about pleasing the left. Maybe that’s why ratings have been dropping for years. Viewership for the 2021 Golden Globes was down by 68%. The Grammy Awards fell by 55%. Perhaps the public is wising up.
