Partnership Revives Popular Outboard Racing Series WOLFEBORO — In partnership with the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM), the South Shore Outboard Association (SSOA) will host the Granite State Title Series, a revival of a popular outboard racing series that last took place in 2015. “This will be a fun time for people of all ages,” said SSOA Events Coordinator

Steve Noury, who said the series will present ten different classes of racing. “Classes are determined by engine horsepower and boat size,” he said. The series starts in Milton, NH at the Town’s Recreation Department Summer Kick - Off Celebration on June 5 - 6. Other series events include the Kingston Sprint

Cup Invitational on September 25 - 26. Hosted by the Kingston Children’s Center, the event will include eight drivers selected from around the country as a racing tribute to legends of the sport from the golden era of the 1960s and 70s. “Spectators will be able to watch motorboats powered by the iconic Mercury

20H racing engine that was introduced in 1959,” said Noury. “These boats can reach speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. It’s a lot of fun for families and people of all ages to watch.” At each event, drivers will compete on an approximate 3/4-mile rectangular race course. RacSee SERIES on 35

Support Right To Work To The Editor: We should support S.B 61(Right To Work Law) which gives workers the right to join a union or not, as opposed to the current system where all workers in a union controlled company must join the union. Workers are still free to join a union if they choose. Look no one is taking away your union. This is common sense legislation that will reduce racism. Unions are racist as supported by the fact that unemployment among blacks is much higher than for whites and unions tend to shut blacks and other minorities out of the workforce. We need to open jobs to all races and not just shut minorities out of jobs by requiring union membership to work. Support S. B. 61 and give everyone a fair chance at getting a job. To The Editor: Joe Biden inherited a border crisis, as did Donald Trump and presidents before them. It is time America owned this crisis and did something about it. Our immigration system has not been restructured since 1965. For too long, we have resorted to the blame game rather than the hard work of figuring out, together, a reasonable and humane border policy that takes

into account the present world conditions, secures the border and recognizes the role of immigration in our economic recovery and long-term economic growth. Obviously, we can’t just open the borders to all comers and must secure points of entry and invest in more technology and personnel to maintain control along the entire border. Just as obviously, immigrants are a positive force in our nation, holding jobs that are important to our economy and communities. There is a high employer demand for workers in such industries as farming, fishing, forestry, cleaning and maintenance, the food industry, construction, home care aides, etc. When are we citizens and the officials we elect to govern going to stop making this a divisive political issue and take responsibility for solving these problems by providing the resources needed and making enforceable, uniform laws and adequate labor protections that allow workers to come to the US temporarily or permanently and contribute to our economy? Cynthia Muse Rye, NH

Critical Race Theory To The Editor: Do you want your young children, grandchildren, or anyone’s children taught that, not due to their own actions, speech, or thoughts but, simply because of their race or gender: -They are racists, sexists, im-

moral, and/or unworthy of respect? - They should be made to feel uncomfortable, ashamed, or otherwise distressed about who they are? - They are oppressors of others? - One race or gender is inherently superior or inferior to others? - They should confess that they are horrible (e.g., racists, sexists, rapists, immoral) people? -There’s something wrong with them and their family if no family member is gay, bisexual, transsexual, or of a different race? -New Hampshire and the United States are fundamentally racist or sexist? These kinds of things are being taught to children in our schools as part of “Diversity”, “Inclusion”, “Equity”, “Social Justice”, or similarly named training. Such teachings are child abuse! Don’t let your children be subjected to these vile attacks. Children have enough problems without blaming them for the actions of others. Similar “Diversity Training” is sometimes imposed on white employees who must confess their racism, advantages, oppression of others, and responsibility for the acts of others without regard to their own actions, speech, or thoughts…if they want to keep their jobs. There are few things worse than falsely accusing an innocent person; that is why bearing false witness is prohibited by the Ninth Commandment. See MAILBOAT on 34

BIRDS For The

Finding Cedar Waxwings

May not be combined with other discounts. Expires 5/31/2021

by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I had hobbled my way almost all the way from the car to the entrance of work when I noticed a flock of cedar waxwings picking off leftover berries in a nearby tree. Even with the persistent tendinitis in my feet acting up, I made my way back to the car to grab the camera. Usually, in situations like this the camera is sitting at home, but this time I was prepared for the unexpected. Cedar waxwings, in my experience anyway, are always unexpected. They are fairly nomadic and it’s hard to go out looking specifically for them. But they appear now and then and it’s always a thrill to see them. I retrieved the camera and hobbled back through the parking lot to the tree in question. Of course, the tree was empty when I got back as the waxwings had taken off for parts unknown. Things like that have happened far more than I’d like to admit, so I just reported for duty and got to work. Thankfully, the window from my office has a view of that tree and about 15 minutes later the waxwings were back in force. I slowly made my way back outside and, as is often the case with waxwings, they obliged by going about their business and not minding the click of the camera.

I got my fill of photos and then did a quick scan for any random Bohemian waxwings that may have been mixed in with the flock. Bohemian waxwings on rare occasions can be seen in New England with cedar waxwings. I have yet to see one, but I have read several reports of that happening. Bohemian waxwings are a larger

cousin of the cedar waxwing. Upon getting home that evening and checking the results of the photos, something jumped out at me regarding the waxwings I had photographed. None of them had the telltale and namesake red waxy wingtips. What kind of waxwing doesn’t have waxy wings, I asked

myself, even though I suspected I knew the answer. I was correct in assuming that these are young birds that haven’t developed this feature yet, most likely first-year birds. Upon further research, it is believed that the red waxy wingtips are a sign of maturity and social standing in See BOSAK on 34

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Trying To Survive Let’s face it. Flatlanders are my bread and butter. My golden egg. Ever since I wrote my first column in 1995 about adjusting to by Brendan Smith life here in New Weirs Times Editor Hampshire as a Flatlander from just outside New York City, I have become the voice for those like me. Those who moved here from away for a hopefully simpler life. Along the way I also took on the important responsibility of being the go-between when it came to the sensitive issue of Flatlander/Native relations. When I first moved here in 1985, those relations were very strained. There was a lot of animosity between the two groups that had built up over the years. Flatlanders had traditionally been treated as second-class citizens and basically dealt with it over the years as they were a very small minority, Over the decades, as more and more of us came to live here, the Flatlander/Native ratio was shrinking and a lot of the natives were uncomfortable with that. There were some ugly incidents like the now legendary “Town Dump Riot” back in the early 1990s when a crowd of natives, hopped up on really strong coffee, chased a group of Flatlanders who were not quite used to proper dump etiquette and were actually trying to throw things away instead of sifting through the piles of junk to find stuff to take home. Of course, it was a weak excuse, but it was just enough to give the jittery group of natives the excuse they needed to take action against this group of growing invaders. The state police were called in when the Flatlanders were

forced into oncoming traffic by the natives who had picked up any rusty old piece of metal they could find lying around. And there were many. The incident was brought to my attentions and I went to the scene. Calling up my connections in the news media I held a press conference. With a few of the abused Flatlanders next to me, I made it clear that this type of social bigotry would not stand. It caused quite a stir and I became called on more and more to not only investigate incidents concerning Flatlander and Natives, but I was also asked to appear on numerous 24/7 news channels. My fame and my pocketbook grew larger. It started to become very lucrative for me. Over the ensuing years, relations between Flatlanders and Natives became less volatile, almost disappearing completely. Most had learned to live in peace together, become more understanding of each other’s viewpoints and lifestyles. It made things a lot less stressful. It also caused my pocketbook to take a big hit. My Flatlander stock was fading. I was becoming less significant and useless and, most importantly, my bank account was shrinking since no one saw the need to consult me as an expert on matters that were no longer relevant. Yes, there were still a few isolated incidents where Native and Flatlanders clashed. It was human nature. But none of them was big enough to make a stink about. Still, I was, and still am, on the lookout for a situation where I could use my dwindling celebrity to try and stir the pot so as to make it seem as if the Native/ Flatlander war is very much alive. It is a matter of survival for me. Just last week, I went down

to the local hardware store to protest the owner, a native, who had asked a Flatlander who had just purchased a power tool if “he knew how to use it properly.” There are some who might say that is a fair question. Something he might ask to anyone, even a fellow Native. But to me, it was a slap in the face against all Flatlanders. We were being profiled, I obligingly told the news crew once they showed up. That long held Native myth from years back that all Flatlanders were inept with tools powered by electricity was once again rearing its ugly head was being revived and would set back Flatlander/Native relations decades. It worked. It got me a little media attention which I used to my advantage. I appeared on a few cable news shows that were looking for filler, pocketed a few bucks and the mortgage was paid for another month. Not all Flatlanders agreed with me though. Some were rather upset and claimed I was the reason that relations with Natives were now going backwards. It was my own constant need for attention and finding trouble where there wasn’t any that was keeping the fire lit. Does that make me angry? Of course not. It just keeps my profile high, my head above water and a few more bucks flowing in. I’m not always proud of what I do. Even I admit I have made some mountains out of molehills like the infamous incident of the Flatlander who was told “you can’t get there from here” when it was very obvious she could. It helped me buy some Christmas gifts for the family. Keeping my Flatlander profile alive is a full-time job and I will always be on the lookout for injustices...real or not.

Silicon Valley’s Smuggling Apps The mainstream media is slowly catching on to the “Open Borders, Inc.” racket. Just this week, NBC News reported that smugglers are using Facebook to advertise their services in violation of Facebook’s policy ban on human exploitation and trafficking. The news network appears shocked, shocked, shocked that coordinated illegal activity is booming on Faceby Michelle Malkin book -- one of the world’s biggest and most Syndicated Columnist influential globalist platforms. Maybe if the bleeding-heart libs in the Fourth Estate hadn’t been so busy carrying water for Mexican cartels and Big Business through endless anti-Trump propaganda pieces defending the mass illegal immigrant invasion over the past four years, they might have blown the whistle sooner on Silicon Valley’s co-conspirators with ruthless coyotes. Only now has NBC News seen fit to enlighten the public about Spanish-language posts on public Facebook pages advertising “Travel to Mexico to the United States. Costs $8,000. 100 percent safe” or “Make your dream a reality in the United States. We are here to help you. The journey is safe and reliable and the price is $4,500 leaving from Monterrey to San Antonio, Texas.” That’s the tip of the iceberg. In 2019, I reported how smugglers and their clients worldwide have used Facebook and WhatsApp (owned by Facebook) to coordinate their journeys. Pueblo Sin Fronteras, the most notorious sponsor of illegal immigrant caravans, still maintains a public Facebook page where its leaders taunt America, announce their borderbreaching activities and post solicitations for supplies and donations. Nongovernmental organizations, advocacy groups and financial institutions have created an additional array of free apps to “help.” The U.N.’s International Organization for Migration offers MigApp on Google Play and Apple’s App Store with information and “assistance to migrate safely.” The app features weather and crime alerts, medical clinic appointment scheduling and money transfer services (more on that in a moment). Similarly, the International Committee of the Red Cross’s WhatsApp alerts provide “advice on how to avoid and prevent accidents, illness and being separated from family members,” as well as a means “to share the geolocation of a shelter or send specific advice or alerts in See MALKIN on 36

Past Time to Fight Back This week, on the basis of whole-cloth lies, major corporations went to political war with the state of Georgia. The lies at issue revolved around Georgia’s new voter law, characterized by both Stacey Abrams by Ben Shapiro and President Joe Biden Syndicated Columnist as a new form of Jim Crow. What do these dastardly new voter restrictions do? They require an ID number to receive an absentee ballot, with language identical to that of federal law; they bar electioneering within 150 feet of a polling place or 25 feet of voters in line, including handing out food or water for partisan purposes; they increase the number of mandatory days of weekend early voting; they preserve some drop boxes that did not exist before the pandemic; they require additional voting machines and election personnel in crowded precincts; they increase voting hours in future elections for the vast majority of counties. These provisions are similar to the laws in a vast majority of states. That didn’t stop Democrats and the media from simply lying about the Georgia voting law. While some in the media did point out that Biden had lied about the law’s supposed crackdown on voting hours, nobody in the media treated his “Jim Crow” contentions with the sneering disrespect they so richly deserved. Instead, they simply parroted the line that Republicans were engaged in widespread voter suppression, another lie -- a lie far more unsubstantiated than Republican concerns about voter fraud and irregularity. But the media and Democrats went even further: They bullied corporations into taking positions on the Georgia election law. CBS News put out a headline that trafficked in simple activism: “3 ways companies can help fight Georgia’s restrictive new voting law.” And companies complied. Coca-Cola, in line with its new Woka-Cola branding, issued a statement deploring an election law the corporation hadn’t bothered to lobby

against before its passage. Delta issued a statement, too, with CEO Ed Bastian explaining, “I need to make it clear that the final bill is unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values.” Major League Baseball followed Biden’s advice and pulled the All-Star Game out of the state. So, what should conservatives do? Many conservatives -- myself included -- deplore the politics of boycotts. We’re not interested in patronizing companies based on political differentiation alone. But if the left is going to hijack the most powerful institutions in America and then weaponize them against voters in red states, conservatives will be left with little choice but to exert counter-pressure. The only alternative is the formation of alternative companies in every industry. If Coca-Cola wishes to cater to the woke, conservatives will need to build a competitor. Conservatives don’t have first-mover advantage in these spaces. But that doesn’t alleviate the responsibility to find a different path than funding those who would cut them off at the knees. The left has politicized everything. The right has avoided that tactic, because it’s ugly and divisive. But it’s too late to put the genie back in the bottle. It’s time for mutually assured destruction. There’s only one thing worse than having nuclear weapons: unilateral disarmament. Better to establish mutually assured destruction now and put corporate America on notice that, by stepping into the middle of fraught political debate, it risks just as much blowback from the right as from the left. Biden’s California Dream

by John Stossel

Syndicated Columnist

I was surprised to read (in The Los Angeles Times) that the Biden administration’s “role model for America” is... California! He wants to “Make America California.” That’s is a ter-

rible idea. Californians now rush to move out of California. Some hopeful folks still move there, but so many more leave that California now loses more than 10,000 citizens every month. In

fact, the state will soon lose a congressional seat. Why do Californians leave? “Exorbitant tax rates, high crime rates, the failing public school systems, the exorbitant cost of living,” says reporter Kristen Tate in my new video. So many Californians move away that there’s now even a shortage of U-Hauls. Renting one to go from Los Angeles to Houston costs four times as much as it does to go from Houston to LA. “People are just emptying out!” says Tate. But this seems crazy. California has great weather and all kinds of

natural advantages. The state’s politicians drive people away with bad policies. Asked by Stossel TV whether it’s a bad idea for President Joe Biden to “make the U.S. more like California,” Governor Gavin Newsom’s office replied with a statement saying, “Before the COVID pandemic, California saw job growth and record low unemployment.” Wow. Really? Oh, it was a record for California. Before the pandemic, the state’s unemployment was 12th worst in America. Now, it’s 3rd worst. The statement continues, “We remain the fifth largest economy in

the world... home to 20 of Fortune’s fastest growing companies.” But that only means California was hospitable to business years ago. Now Oracle, Tesla and many other companies are moving operations to other states. A big reason is California’s onerous regulations. They make it hard to create anything new. It’s also a reason housing costs so much. California passed a law raising its minimum wage from $13 to $15/ hr. That’s one reason many Californians can’t find any legal work. A good thing about America having 50 states is that when states See STOSSEL on 37

Britain’s Prince of Steadfastness A page has turned on the House of Windsor. Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at 99 just short of his by John J. Metzler hundredth birthSyndicated Columnist day. The long serving consort to the Queen has lived a notable and indeed remarkable, if sometimes controversial life. The Queen (94) described Philip, her husband of 73 years as “my strength and stay all these years.” Philip’s passing at Windsor Castle has “left a huge void in her life.” Princess Elizabeth married Philip in 1947; on his wedding day, he was made Duke of Edinburgh.

Quite unexpectedly just a few years into marriage, Elizabeth became Queen upon the death of her father George VI, Britain’s beloved wartime King. Elizabeth and Philip heard the sad news in 1952 while at the Treetops Lodge in Kenya. It was time to stand up and serve. Later at the time of Elizabeth’s Coronation in June 1953, Philip the “media savvy” prince, insisted that the splendid Royal ceremonies and pageantry be presented on that new medium called television. It was a step toward modernity and transformation of the institution of the monarchy. His family roots rested in complicated mix of royalty from Greece, Germany and Denmark. This was a long time ago. President Dwight Eisenhower was in the White

House. Winston Churchill was British Prime Minister. The Korean War was still raging. Elvis was yet to be famous. Coverage of Prince Philip’s passing has generally been fair, but has often swerved into the editorial weeds by sometimes viewing this man through a contemporary Woke lens. Philip was a scion of a very different generation, an era really, one that served and went through the tumultuous years of WWII, and then lived through the heady but threadbare years after 1945, often known as Austerity Britain. Prince Philip was in many ways a living figure who bridged the generations from postwar-Britain to the present. His keen interest in science and technology, his initiatives for young people, the Duke of

Edinburgh’s awards, has helped more than eight million young people around the Commonwealth achieve their dreams. His role in a myriad of charities underscored his compassion. His notable quips and sometimes gaffes were typical of his generation but often hurtful. Again he reflected another era. Conrad Black, writing in Canada’s National Post opined,“He always had that fine royal combination of selfconfidence without pomposity.” The mega series on the Royals, the Crown, has brought these figures to life and has done a good job of it; yet, most people will recall Philip in a less than positive light regarding their bumpy years of marriage during the 1950’s. A showdown over Right to Work is looming in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, whose members will soon decide whether or not Senate-approved Right to Work legislation will be sent this spring to Gov. Chris Sununu’s desk. This bill would make New Hampshire the 28th state in the country to ban the extrac-

tion of forced union dues and fees from employees as a condition of employment. Union officials and state politicians who reflexively side with them oppose S.B. 61, but they have made no serious attempt up to now to explain why it is okay to force employees to bankroll a union if they choose not to belong to it. As even pro-Big Labor coercion law professor Sheldon Leader has admitted, under so-called “exclusive” union bargaining, workers who don’t want a union are “often actually made worse off” than they were before. Many workers are disadvantaged by union contract provi-

sions that favor fulltimers over part-timers and high-seniority employees over younger ones, to take just two examples. Ordinary citizens across the country correctly sense that forced unionism is unjust. Moreover, years and years of economic data indicate that forced unionism hinders employment growth. For example, early this month, the U.S. Labor Department issued new and revised data regarding civilian household employment (a broad measure that includes the selfemployed and independent contractors as well as employees on employer payrolls) in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. From 2010 to 2020, the total number of people employed in the 22 states that had Right to Work laws on the books for the entire decade grew by 11.0%, or just over six million. Over the same decade, the total number of people employed in the 23 states that still lack Right to Work protections today grew by 2.4%, or just under 1.7 million. In New Hampshire alone, employment grew by just 2.4%, or barely more than one-fifth the aggregate increase for Right to Work states. The six bottom-ranking states for employment performance over the past decade, all suffering employment losses of greater than 2%, are all non-Right

to Work. But six of the seven top-ranking states for employment growth over the past decade are Right to Work. In addition to being correlated with faster job growth, Right to Work is correlated with higher real incomes. U.S. Commerce Department data, adjusted for interstate cost-of-living differences according to an index calculated by the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, a state government agency, show that the average compensation per employee in Right to Work states in 2019 was $50,545. That’s roughly $1,400 higher than the forceddues state average, and roughly $2,300 higher than the New Hampshire average, according to the same analysis. As eminent statistician and Yale professor emeritus Edward Tufte likes to say, “Correlation is not causation but it sure helps.” I submit that the consistent correlation between Right to Work, faster employment growth and higher real, spendable incomes ought to help every fairminded person reach the conclusion that banning forced union dues and fees is economically beneficial. A New Hampshire Soldier On Trial Civil War Homicide

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

There was no question about “Who done it?” All of the witnesses agreed that it was Webster who did the shooting. The question was: “When is it acceptable to shoot a rebel?” A rebel who was a civilian, that is, and on his home turf. A New Hampshire soldier’s fate was in the hands of a civilian jury in unfriendly territory for doing that very thing – shooting a civilian on a Maryland street in 1861. But let’s put the “incident” in context of the bigger picture before we continue. Though just before becoming the President of the United States Abraham Lincoln had said there was no crisis in the country, in the early Spring of 1861, 160 years ago, he called upon the States in the Union to provide 75,000 troops to put down a rebellion by some southern States.

The Maryland side of the bridge at Point of Rocks, MD, held by Confederate soldiers (Harper’s Weekly, June 29, 1861; NPS History Collection) New Hampshire had no organized State militia at that time, yet before the legislature could meet to act upon the president’s request, it had recruited and organized two regiments to prepare to enter the conflict. The First New Hampshire Regiment was, according to its history, compiled by its chaplain, “made up of the stalwart, steadygoing and industrious men of New Hampshire – the farmers and mechanics, the merchants and clerks, and the common laborers.” Those plus “a generous sprinkling of educated

and professional men.” And, he added, “some of the undesirable elements of society,” adding that the number of those were less than one might think. I don’t think our shooter would have been considered among the latter group, at least before the shooting, because he was an officer in the regiment. Samuel Webster is listed as having been from Dover, New Hampshire, but he was born in Sandwich. He was mustered into the First New Hampshire Regiment on May 2, 1861 and was “mustered out See SMITH on 30

Spring Skiing Fun

Last week’s warm sunny weather would have been considered wonderful for a summer day. This fine spring weather has people out bicycling, raking their lawns and hitting the golf courses. But some of us are still playing in the snow too. Cannon and Bretton Woods called it quits last Sunday. Wildcat is hanging in there and is the last New Hampshire mountain to be open. Yah the snow is getting thin down below but up high the snow is melt-

ing more slowly. I am amazed at the skill of the snow groomers to farm and push snow around to maintain a continuous top to bottom snow covered slope. We skied Cannon on Thursday and it was great fun. They did an amazing job grooming and nearly all the main mountain’s trails were open. It looked like Mittersill could have been open but spring mid-week there isn’t exactly a crowd. (I learned they did open Mittersill for the weekend!) Many times we had the slope just to

ourselves. Bria and I arrived at 9am when the lifts opened. We went straight to the Zoomer chairlift where the sun was hot and the snow was getting soft, too soft, quickly. Then we went to the Cannonball Quad to ski off the summit. Sunscreen and sunglasses were necessary to protect our skin and eyes. Everyone left their warm clothing in the car. Beneath the chairlift we watched people coming down the Profile Trail. Some really See PATENAUDE on 32

On October 4, 2003, I was one of 35,460 baseball fans at Fenway Park watching the Red Sox face elimination in the ALDS against the Oakland As. Standing with many other fans on the right field roof box terrace during the bottom of the 12th inning, I watched Trot Nixon step to the plate to pinch hit for Gabe Kapler. Nixon proceeded to knock a Rich Harden offering out of the park for a two-run homer and a BoSox win. The roaring crowd became a swirling caldron of delirium. A woman standing close by grabbed me and hugged me, and then hugged the person standing next to me. I have no idea who she was but I’ll always remember her spontaneous outburst of joy. High fives between strangers abounded. One of the beauties of sport is how games bring people together, regardless of race, gender, or political affiliation. I had no idea about the happy woman’s orientation and didn’t care. And I’m sure she didn’t care who I was, other than a Red Sox fan. Now the joy and camaraderie of sport has been ruined for many of us. At least for a while. Following in trace of the NBA and the NFL, Major League Baseball succumbed to the pressures of the liberal woke

The reason cited was concern about “voter suppression” due to recent legislative measures in the Peach State aimed at preserving voter integrity. Apparently requiring voters to show ID was a “bridge too far” for wokesters and Democrats seeking to harvest ballots. I now have approximately zero interest in following our formerly Beloved BoSox. Red Sox owner John Henry had already alienated many of us with his embrace of the Marxist BLM movement and his dissing of the Yawkey Family—which owned the Red Sox for over a half century. And restoring a known cheater, Alex Cora, as manager, also removed much of the sparkle from Boston baseball. Readers know that politics comes up in this

space from time to time. But this is an opinion column that folks are free to ignore. Arenas and parks with giant BLM signage force political imagery on spectators who perhaps want a politics-free venue. Did you ever notice that politicians who are introduced at ball parks are routinely booed, regardless of party? (Exception: President George W. Bush at Yankee Stadium after the 9/11 attacks.) Excessive arena politics ruins sports for many of us. According to a poll by You/Gov and Yahoo Sports, 34.5 percent of Americans watch sports less today than a year ago because of politics. Most fans have changed their sports viewing habits. While 11 percent claim they watch more sports because of the political advocacy, three times as many say they’re turning off sports See MOFFETT on 34

failure. Not always immediately, but always eventually. My design took all of this into consideration. You however with your limited understanding and vision of what lies ahead have allowed your pride to exalt yourself and your wisdom over mine. In many ways I see you as teenagers who think they understand everything but in fact they are “sophomores” in life. A sophomore is a combination of two Greek words. One is “Sophos” and it means wise. The other is “moros,” and it means fool. A sophomore thinks they know it all, but they actually know very little. With this attitude however they reject the wisdom of their elders and act on their own limited knowledge and as a result, suffer greatly (Romans 1:22). Many experience problems and complications from wrong behavior that negatively impact them with crippling effects, all their lives. Many, as you know never make it out of their teen years and lose their lives due to their foolishness. I was reminded of a young boy who was walking with his sister in the magnificent Yellowstone Park. Despite many warnings that leaving the boardwalk was not only prohibited but also deadly, he followed his own wisdom. His sister watched as he slipped and fell into one of the hot, acidic thermal pools and unnecessarily died a quick and horrific death. By rejecting me and my wisdom and calling it good, even when I have posted similar signs throughout my book,

the Bible, you too have foolishly begun a death march. Health, with respect to sexuality, is only experienced as one man and one woman, in an exclusive covenantal marital relationship, make vows of lifelong commitment to each other in my presence (Matthew 19:4-6). Note how you are dying. First, your relationship with me has died. I have not changed my standards of healthy sexuality. If I did, I wouldn’t love you, for I know what is good and bad, healthy and unhealthy for you. I have always called disobedience to me a sin, which is actually an archery term and means you have missed the mark of the bullseye that I have established as your Creator. I have made it clear that “the wages of sin is death,” because it separates you from me, the source of life (Romans 6:23). Your bodies are also dying from a host of diseases spawned by illicit and unhealthy sex. Since the 60’s when there were only a few sexually transmitted diseases, the number has climbed to more than a dozen. Many are incurable and many will take your life. You are also killing millions of babies through abortions with the predominant number for convenience, due to unexpected pregnancies. It is interesting that at a time in which you are seeking to instilling confidence in women, you encourage them to demonstrate their new found bravado by taking the life of a child, that even though you consider it a “mistake,” I am forming in the womb (Psalm 139:11-18).

Letters From God

Question What do you think about the morality changes that our advanced culture have created and now officially and legally support? You have made significant changes. Your “advanced culture” as you call it has been slowly morphing since the recent movement away from me. When you threw me out of your schools, government and public square you also threw out my will and ways. Since I am the same “yesterday, today and tomorrow,” (Hebrews 13:8) your changes are not an “advance” but a dangerous regression. I am your Creator. When I made you and placed you on the earth, I put design features in both men and women that would give them everything they need to experience life in all its fullness. It included the capacity for procreation as well as pleasure. My design also set parameters for sexuality that would always protect them from sickness, disease and death. You must know that as God I know everything that could help you and enhance your life but also that which can harm you (Jeremiah 29:11). Like any design, if you violate the design of the designer you may have momentary pleasure, but in the end, the delight and beauty of the design will be lost and you will experience catastrophic

Finally, your nation is dying. Watching your political leaders use this as a tool to garner votes is so odious to me as well. We’ll need to talk later about my thoughts on your future as a Nation, as a result of many godless leaders you have chosen, to give you what you want instead of godly leaders who give you what you need. It’s kind of like indulgent parents of teens. A disaster is brewing when children are raising other children. Please know I write in answer to your question out of deep love and concern for your welfare. Since I am God, I know that when you violate my design however, you will never know the delight of me, the Designer. I love you and hope you will return to me, my love and my design soon, before it is too late (Jude 21). God. These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

When my kids were young, there were children books that they would pour over proclaiming Where’s Waldo. I’m sure you all have also seen these in one form or another. The red and white striped beanie hat and matching shirt on the skinny guy who would hide among a crowd made it intriguing for people to find Waldo. The Waldo craze lasted for quite some time and then faded into obscurity. I’m sure it is still produced in calendar form, further kids books and puzzles. But the memories of those challenging times finding the allusive character seem timeless. Well, a similar challenge of finding a very limited release ale awaits you beer finders from our friends at Lagunitas. Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, CA, is a quirky group of people bent on bringing your the very best and incredibly different beer that you might ever taste. Owner Toby Magee admits he has been curious of how people affect beer. So he creates circumstances where people can enjoy

Then you can wipe off muddy paws before they have a chance to get the carpets dirty!” -- T.Y. in Mississippi *If you’re reattaching a button to shorts or pants, try using dental floss, the unwaxed kind. It’s much stronger, and can hold the button better than regular thread. Use a marker to darken it if the color is an issue. *Here’s a great way to get a longer life from a bar of soap: Press the plastic top of a pop bottle into one side of a wet bar of soap. 4 Ways to Prepare Your Home For Bug Season

(StatePoint) Spring is the official start to bug season, making it important to prepare your home. Here are four steps you can take you keep bugs at bay: 1. Do a spot check: Check window and door screens for tears to prevent flying bugs from getting in the home and make repairs where necessary. Also, take a quick look around for areas with standing water and try to eliminate them. Standing water creates a breeding ground for mosquitos. Lastly, even the sturdiest garbage bags can’t entirely prevent leaks and spills, and over time, your trash bins can begin to accumulate residue inside and around the rim. Bugs, especially flies, love leftovers, so give your garbage cans a

thorough rinse. 2. Be ready: Put an effective pest control product in your shopping cart early in the season so you’re ready when you see the first sign of bugs in your home. If you see one cockroach, chances are there are more hiding in nooks and crannies. It’s hard to put a pin on how many, but an old saying is that for every one you do see, there are 10 more you don’t. Striking at the first sign of ants or roaches can help you avoid big problems down the line, as these insects can multiply very quickly. One solid choice is Zevo In-

stant Action Bug Killer Spray. Zevo’s BioSelective Technology targets and shuts down biological pathways found in bugs, not in people or pets. Easy to use, just spray on pests, then wipe up the dead bugs, as well as any excess product. Zevo is now available nationwide at The Home Depot and Target, and online at zevoinsect.com. 3. Protect your trees: Prepare for the upcoming visit of the 17-year cicadas. In many parts of the country, billions of cicadas will swarm and the females will scrape small twigs to lay their

eggs under bark. Protect small and vulnerable trees (ones that are under 4 or 5 feet tall) with cheesecloth to spare them from attack. 4. Keep an eye on pets. Pets are liable to gobble up large helpings of dead cicadas. While not toxic, too many cicadas could cause some digestive issues for furry friends. Help keep them healthy by watching what they eat! During the spring season, it is necessary to take steps both to keep bugs out, and to be ready if they do invade.

Tips to Get Your Garage Organized – And Keep It That Way (StatePoint) Is your garage in disarray? While you dream of a perfectly organized workbench or garage, your reality probably looks more like a sea of random toys, boxes and exercise equipment. Every do-it-yourselfer knows a clean, organized garage is the key to efficient project planning and repairs around the home. As we head into warmer months, set aside the time to take charge of the space and finally create a sense of tidiness that will last year-round. Follow these five tips to tame the mess and get your garage back in shape: 1. Invest in shelving that accommodates clear storage bins. When it comes to organizing and storing the assortment of cords, car care items, paint supplies and kid’s toys littering your garage, nothing does the job better than clear storage bins. Not only can you categorize items by project or activity type, you can also easily stack them to save space without sacrificing the ability to easily find what you need, when you need it. Invest in taller, wider shelving for the perimeter of the garage to accommodate your chosen bins. 2. Fix or dispose of anything broken or past its prime.

There’s nothing worse than scrambling to find a specific tool or product in an urgent situation, only to realize it’s broken, damaged or dried out. As you organize, pay attention to textures, consistencies and expiration dates. Toss and replace any items that have seen better days. For broken tools that seem salvageable, like cracked hoses or broken handles, reach for a professional grade, heavy-duty duct tape like T-Rex Tape to tackle the repair. 3. Utilize ceiling and wall space with hanging storage. From bicycles and skis to rakes and shovels, some equipment is better off stored up and out of your way. Install hanging racks

or shelving above the area where you park your vehicles to store larger, heavier equipment, and use a dou-

ble-sided mounting tape to attach hooks along the sides of your garage for lighterSee GARAGE on 27

7 Steps to Save Money on a Remodel (Family Features) Every homeowner has a defined budget he or she can allocate toward a remodeling project. Even if funds

the value of the home. Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association for the Remodeling Industry to help save money on your next project. 1. Determine how far your budget will go. Create a wish list of everything you want to accomplish. Disregard cost and simply write down everything you can dream of. Prioritize items from “must haves” to “nice but not necessary.” Find a contractor who will work with you to determine whether your wish list is attainable for the funds you are willing to invest in your home.

2. Decide how to handle budget overages. If you can’t get far enough down the list with the available money, you could choose to stop the process and continue saving, investigate financing options, reevaluate your wish list or consider material substitutions. 3. Make material selections you can afford. Every project will have a set of required materials, but there are options when it comes to variety, style and quality. •Cabinets: Subtle changes like forgoing See REMODEL on 28

Cool and Refreshing – Cucumbers

LANDSCAPING MY GRASS OFF Trust Your Project to Us We help keep the grass greener!

landscapingmygrassoff.com | 603-866-2911

Offering House Plants, annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, Vegetables and Herbs. After the first flush of flowers, male and female flowers will appear for bees to pollinate and cucumbers to develop. by Melinda Myers Add a cool refreshing twist to your meals, beverages, appetizers, and snacks with cucumbers. These popular vegetables are grown worldwide, adding anti-inflammatory vitamin K, vitamins C, B-5 and more to your meals. Take it a step further by using your own fresh-from-thegarden cucumbers. Grow cucumbers sprawled on the ground or in a container on your patio, balcony, or deck. Save space and train them up a decorative support. They make great vertical accents in containers as well as edible and ornamental gardens. Going vertical not only saves space, it improves pro-

ductivity by reducing disease problems while also making harvesting easier. You will find a wide variety of cucumbers available from seed company catalogs and on the seed racks of your favorite garden center. Check with your local Extension service website for their recommendations for your location. Select the best cucumber for your garden space, meals, and snacks. Bush types like Salad bush produce eight-inch slicing cucumbers on a small plant. Spacemaster is a compact plant, spreading 24 inches and suitable for containers and hanging baskets. All-America

Selections winner Saladmore Bush is another semi-bush plant that starts producing cucumbers in 55 days from planting. Green Light is a 2020 All-America Selections winner that produces an abundance of great tasting mini cucumbers. Grow to the other extreme with burplesstype cucumbers that can be harvested when much larger. They have been bred to contain little or no cucurbitacin that causes bitterness and the tendency to burp when consumed. Wait for the soil to warm and danger of frost to pass for planting seeds one half to one inch deep in properly prepared soil. Plant several cucum-

ber seeds in a large container or in rows or hills in the garden.

Renovating Your Home? How to Protect Your Investment

FREE WELL ASSESSMENTS Seeking area residents interested in having an on-site assessment of their private wells. This service is grant funded by the USEPA. It is free and is confidential. Many times, well owners are unaware of the possible causes of contamination in their wells. The well assessment considers site conditions, geology, land use practices, well construction, and maintenance in determining if conditions exist which would impact your well water quality. Site specific recommendations and best practices will be provided to help keep your water safe from contamination.

Contact Mmistretta@rcapsolutions.org or 603-312-7901 to schedule an assessment.

(StatePoint) The increased time spent at home during the pandemic has resulted in many people deciding to tackle home renovation projects. From creating a new office space or virtual learning area, to larger projects like bathroom renovations, many homeowners are rolling up their sleeves to do the improvements themselves. And the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In fact, the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) projects the remodeling industry will be even stronger in 2021, up 3.8% compared to 2020. During the pandemic, homeowners have fixed up or added on decks, updated landscaping and installed new roofs, among other projects.

According to HomeAdvisor’s latest annual State of Home Spending report, the number one completed project was interior painting

– 35% of households painted in 2020, making a visual impact with a low investment. What’s on your to-do list? If you’re consider-

ing an upgrade but not sure where to start, check out the results of a national survey by Erie Insurance, conducted prior to the pandemic, which revealed what homeowners don’t have, but wish they did. Here are the top five: 1. Walk-in pantry: This topped the list with just under a third of respondents (30%) saying they wish they had one. Kitchen renovations are typically on wish lists, and Houzz reported that demand for kitchen remodelers was up 40% in June 2020 compared to the year prior. 2. Granite countertops: 17.8% See PROTECT on 29

While it’s great to have a wide assortment of tools and supplies, for many projects and repairs you really just need the basics – think maxstrength waterproof tape, bungee cords, a hammer, nails and similar essentials. Use these items as the foundation of your garage workstation and stock up on extras to keep on-hand for emergencies, camping and other on-the-go uses. 5. Give everything a home. Aim to group supplies for similar activities, tasks and repairs together, giving each category a “home.” In addition to helping keep things organized in dedicated spaces, hanging frequently used tools and supplies on hooks or pegboard can make it easier to quickly scan the garage and find exactly what you need. Use your mounting tape to safely and securely create a space to store and display all your go-to items. Interested in more solutions for all your home and DIY needs? Visit www.trextape. com for a wide variety project and repair ideas. Whether you’re working on your car or tackling a weekend DIY project, having all your tools and supplies in order will make all the difference.

Water thoroughly and often enough to keep the soil slightly moist. Apply a one- to twoinch layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles, or other organic matter over the soil surface to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and reduce the risk of soil borne diseases. Watch for the first flush of flowers in 50 to 70 days after planting. The first set of flowers are all male flowers, so no fruit can form. Soon male and female flowers will appear for bees to pollinate and fruit to develop. Harvest your cucumbers based on how you plan to use them. Pick when one and a half to two and a half inches long for making sweet pickles and three to four inches for dills. Harvest slicing cucumbers when the fruit is firm, green, crisp and six to eight inches long.

bers will maintain their flavor at even larger sizes. Check the seed packet for harvesting directions. With proper selection, planting and care you will be rewarded with an abundant harvest. So be prepared to enjoy, preserve, and share your homegrown fresh cucumbers.

of vinyl and equally appealing when finished properly. •Flooring: Advances in synthetic materials make them difficult to distinguish from natural products. Synthetics generally come with lower cost and more durability, making them a simple substitute for natural products like stone, wood, brick and marble. 4. Pay attention to project details. It’s critical to ensure every detail of labor and material is specified in the agreement with the remodeler. If it’s not included in the written agreement, it’s likely not included in the work scope. Ask your remodeler what labor and materials are not included and determine what addi-

tional expenses you’ll likely incur to complete the project. 5. Ask how you can help reduce costs. Talk to your contractor about tasks or materials you can provide that would reduce the project cost without affecting its schedule. This might include jobsite cleanup or obtaining certain materials the contractor would otherwise spend considerable time securing. 6. Plan ahead for project timing. Ask for a potential timeframe for completing the project, as well as any factors that could affect the schedule so you can anticipate costs such as eating out more often while the kitchen is being renovated or

renting living or storage space. 7. Know how you’ll resolve disputes. Because of the unique stresses induced by remodeling projects, it’s a good idea to determine before you begin how disputes will be resolved, such as adding an arbitration clause to the agreement that eliminates expensive legal representation. A few deep breaths and a solution-minded approach can also save more than money if conflict arises. Find more moneysaving advice for your next remodeling project at remodelingdoneright.com.

land. There they set up camp, pitching their tents at a spot they named “Camp Berry.” The previous day an action had taken place which probably did not endear the regiment to the people of Maryland. Colonel Charles Stone

was the commander of a brigade which included the First New Hampshire men. Col. Stone had sought some “entertainment” at the St. Charles Hotel in that place, but was refused. Upset by the refusal Col. Stone rounded up

a company of men, marched to the hotel and took command of its operation for the day, an action that may have emboldened Samuel Webster to demand the obedience of others on the next day. Along with soldiers from New York and Pennsylvania the New Hampshire soldiers were given the assignment of watching and guarding the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal railroad line along the Potomac River. On Sunday, July 21, 1861 a few Union soldiers had an unplanned confrontation with some civilian young men who were supporters of

the southern soldiers in the newly started war. A group of eight to ten young men from Adamstown, Maryland had come to Point of Rocks on that day, a Sunday, where they visited some drinking establishments. A group of New Hampshire soldiers, including Samuel Webster were keeping guard along the railroad tracks. The men from the Adamstown area, six miles from Point of Rocks, took command of a handcar to transport them home. In the History of the First Regiment there are only three sentences used to describe the shooting that took place on the railroad tracks. See SMITH on 31

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 15, 2021 — til his trial in November when a 12 man jury acquitted him of murder. The Civil War Times says that he was a private at the time of the shooting, but the history of the First Regiment indicates that he was a Sergeant. The Revised Register of the Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire in the War of the Rebellion reads that Samuel Webster who was born in Sandwich, but made his home in Dover, was mustered in The First NH Regiment on May 2, 1861 as Sergeant. Along with his fellow soldiers Webster was mustered out of the regiment on August 9, 1861 at the end of the three month enlistment period. According to the report in the Civil War magazine Webster would have been in a civilian jail in Frederick, Maryland at that

Recruitment Poster for the 7th NH Voluntary Infantry Regiment. SMITH from 30 Writing about Point of Rocks it was said on page 162,: “Here occurred the unfortunate conflict, the only one of the kind during the campaign, in which a young rebel was killed by a pistol shot fired by a soldier named Webster. Webster was arrested, tried by a jury of twelve men, and acquitted. He afterwards enlisted in another NH regiment and died in the service.” The Civil War Times magazine in its Febru-

ary issue of this year published a much more detailed account of the “incident.” The young rebel men who were on the handcar were stopped by the New Hampshire soldiers and Sergeant Webster apparently told the young rebels that he was an officer and they had to obey him. A teenage boy by the name of Calvin Lamar refused to obey Webster’s orders to move off the handcar, told him he wasn’t afraid of him and chal-

lenged him to shoot his pistol. After shooting at the feet of another man, and telling Lamar a couple of times that he didn’t want to shoot him, Webster pointed his gun at him and shot and killed him. It appears from the testimonies of those who were there that both Lamar and Sergeant Webster were drunk. Lieutenant William Greeley was over the men at the tracks that day and arrested Webster who was jailed un-

time awaiting trial. As previously noted a jury found him not guilty of murder at an all day trial on November 13, 1861. The First New Hampshire Regiment was used mostly for guard duty and did not do any fighting except for exchanging some shots with the enemy across the river. Five men of the regiment died during its three months of service. Two of them drowned and three died of disease. Many of the men, including Webster, re-

enlisted in other regiments. Samuel Webster served in the seventh infantry regiment from December 2, 1861 until October 9, 1863 with the rank of Sergeant, and was said to have left the seventh because of a promotion. The promotion was to Lieutenant in the Second Company New Hampshire Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was mustered in on October 16, 1863, but died of disease on February 3, 1864 in Dover.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 15, 2021 — PATENAUDE from 32 clear sky made for big mountain views. We thought it would have been a fine day for hiking but snowshoes certainly would be required up high. Skylight was the trail of the day. On the more shaded steep trail the snow didn’t get slushy and turning was good fun. We skied every trail that was open. I think we made 21 runs, we skied until we were tired out and hungry. Back at the house we decided to go for a walk and we ended up going along the Ham Branch of the Gale River. It was still sunny and almost 70 degrees. Bria had a bright idea. Bria jumped in the cold clear water first. I wanted to chicken out but I didn’t. The water was as cold as I

feared. I couldn’t run out of the water fast enough. Bria jumped in a second time. I didn’t. Now I can say I went skiing and swimming in Franconia on the same day. The next day, Friday, Danielle and I went to Wildcat. Wow, it was warmer than it had been at Cannon. Again the “crowd” was sparse. Again I enjoyed no lift lines and having open slopes just to ourselves--it was perfecto. We enjoyed the big vista of Mt. Washington and its ravines. We could see that the Sherburne Trail down from Tuckerman is mostly melted out. That means visitors to Tuckerman Ravine will not be able to ski all the way back down to the Pinkham parking lot but will have to

BOSAK from 34 waxwings. The more red the wingtips, the older and healthier the bird. None or only a few waxy wingtips means it’s a younger and more inexperienced bird. That is the current understanding of the purpose of this feature anyway. What makes for waxy wingtips, you may ask. Also thanks to the internet (a blog on nature. org to be specific), I discovered that: “The red wax tips are appendages on the bird’s secondary feathers. They’re colored by astaxanthin, a carotenoid pigment.” Now you know. Cedar waxwings, of course, also have yellowtipped tails as another distinguishing feature. These are not waxy, just yellow. A change in diet can alter that yellow to yellowish-orange or orange. I love when I stumble across cedar waxwings.

I think if I ever made a top 10 list of my favorite birds they would probably be on it. I would imagine they would fall on the top 10 list of many other birdwatchers as well. This latest sighting was a welcome prelude to the upcoming warbler and spring migration season. Waxwings may be found in New England throughout the year and they are a welcomed sighting at any time. This sighting was particularly timely as it helped to bridge the gap between winter and the onset of spring migration. Happy spring everyone and let me know what you are seeing out there. MAILBOAT from 2 Behind all these innocuously named trainings is Critical Race Theory (CRT) which essentially says that white people cause all the world’s problems and are born as evil oppressors of others. When did Americans accept the idea that one person or one group of people is responsible for other peoples’ misdeeds? We didn’t and we don’t! Blaming people for the deeds of others is wrong, unjust, divisive, and unAmerican. But dividing Americans is the purpose of these innocuously named (CRT front) trainings/teachings; they are attacks on “E Pluribus Unum”. United, Americans protect their freedoms. impose radical leftist policies on the American people. We know that the goal of CRT training is political rather than helping race relations because CRT training isn’t about “The Golden Rule”, it’s about requiring whites to be “AntiRacist” which requires supporting the far left’s political, essentially Marxist, ideology and far left politicians. Citizens of every race in countries which have implemented the far left governments desired by CRT supporters flee those countries to come here. We should learn from observation and these immigrants to reject far left policies and any subtle subterfuge like these CRT based trainings used to undermine our freedoms. Don Ewing Meredith, NH

MALKIN from 6 the event of unexpected situations.” United We Dream’s “Notifica” app is also available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. It gives illegal immigrant travelers a “help button” to alert friends, family, lawyers, media propagandists and others in case of detention or encounters with law enforcement. Border saboteurs have used technology for decades to help undermine immigration enforcement. Ricardo Dominguez created a crowdsourced websitejamming network in the 1990s called the FloodNet system, which allowed anyone with an internet connection to interfere with

the communications of the U.S. Border Patrol, White House, G8, Mexican embassy and others. He then introduced the Transborder Immigrant Tool in 2009 using cheap $30 Motorola cellphones equipped with a free GPS applet to help illegal immigrants navigate desert routes, locate water stations and determine their proximity to highways. An expert consulted by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees lauded “how smartphones and social media have revolutionized” migration, allowing illegal immigrants to bypass “legal means” of finding agents that “take a long time” and instead use the “dark digital underworld” for “facilitating access to agents and

smugglers” through encrypted Facebook and WhatsApp channels. Add to all this a new boom of peer-to-peer apps that facilitate illegal immigrant money transfers known as “remittances.” In 2017, the aggregate cost of sending remittances was about $30 billion. Old-line money transfer operators charge steep fees averaging about 7% of the amount sent. Among the plethora of competitors and disrupters jockeying in the migrant money market to peel away customers with lower transaction fees are Wells Fargo, MoneyGram, Paypal/ Xoom, Wise and WorldRemit. Many of these apps integrate with Facebook’s Messenger Chat, Viber and WeChat. WorldRemit, a

start-up founded by a Somalian former United Nations official with venture capital backing from Facebook, Spotify, Netflix and Slack, is closing in on 600,000 transfers per month, according to Fast Company. Just to make Silicon Valley’s allegiances clear: Apps owned or backed by Facebook, Google and Apple that aid and abet illegal immigration and human smuggling operate with impunity, while those same globalist companies have banned lawabiding, free-speech apps such as Gab and Parler. Untold thousands of nationalists have been deplatformed for defending our homeland, while cartels and coyotes exploit the internet and

corporate oligarchs’ cheap labor appetites to sabotage our borders and attack American sovereignty. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 15, 2021 — STOSSEL from 7 fail, we can learn from their mistakes. People defeated by California’s rules move to Nevada or Texas. But if the federal government adopts California’s rules, where can we move? The Congressional Budget Office says a national $15 minimum wage will help some people, but it will cost 1.4 million jobs. Yet, Biden wants the higher minimum. Biden’s plan for America also includes a new version of Cash for Clunkers, the absurd program that once paid people to junk old cars. California has its own version, which the state claims helps reduce emissions. “But most of the cars that were turned in were not even actively registered,” says Tate. “It means they probably were just going to be scrapped anyway! These programs are failures... but they make environmentalists feel good.” Like California’s “clean energy” rules. How long until all American motorists pay the $4/gallon Californians pay? Or the $7 people pay in Norway and Denmark? Biden also picked lots of Californians for his administration. When Vice President Kamala Harris was San Francisco’s district attorney, she oversaw 1,900 convictions for pot offenses. Yet, she’s since joked about her own marijuana use. When the Biden administration fired staffers for using marijuana in the past, Harris was spared. “Unfortunately, there’s been a trend in the Biden administration of giving jobs to people who might check (race and gen-

der) boxes,” says Tate. “But they have horrendous track records.” Biden made Alejandro Mayorkas America’s new secretary of Homeland Security even though he was cited by the inspector general for pressuring his staff to approve visas for politically powerful Democrats. “In government, you always fail up,” complains Tate. The LA Times wrote that Biden wouldn’t nominate California Labor Secretary Julie Su because “rampant levels of fraud scuttled (her) prospects.” Biden then made her deputy secretary of labor. “If we make America California,” concludes Tate, “we are all going to be paying for it.” At least Californians can move to other states. But I don’t want to leave America. METZLER from 7 wished to make the Royal Family “more accessible.” In a 1969 BBC documentary “Royal Family” camera followed the Queen, Philip and their four children, Charles and Anne, along with Andrew and Edward, through daily routines. The Crown series while blending fact and fiction serves to “demystify” the Royals. At the same time Philip stressed making the monarch “modern and relevant”. He was clearly a modernizer but at the same time a fellow whose gravitas was proudly rooted in traditions. His BBC TV obituary recorded the Prince as “a man of strong views and a strong sense of Duty.” One can add he was steadfast in his duties and was loyal to the crown. All wonderful attributes but often echoing another age. Some say that his service in the Royal Navy and his closeness and commitment to the military solidified his stature. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated somberly, “Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world…one of the last surviving people in this country to have served in the second world war.” “It is to Her Majesty, and her family, that our nation’s thoughts must turn today,” the prime minister added. Lauded throughout the Commonwealth’s 54 nations from Canada to Kenya and India to Malaysia, Philip often visited far flung shores. All former American presidents issued glowing statements praising Prince Philip’s role; most had met him during their visits to the

United Kingdom or the Royal couple’s visits to America. Indeed, the “Special Relationship” between the United States and Britain endures as an alliance and partnership. Philip may have been the dutiful unsung hero. But Britain’s Monarchy is not all smoke, mirrors and mystery but a very tangible cohesive force which binds the country together in spite of politics, fads and the occasional errant Prince. The institution, its history, and its meaning go well beyond pomp and glitter. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea,China.\
