Trail Tending In The Belknaps

Mt. Anna to Goat Pasture Hill Five years ago Bria O’Neil attended the BRATTS (BelknapRangeTrailTenders. org) annual meeting because she was interested in helping maintain the trails she enjoyed hiking. She ended up being able to adopt the section of the Red Trail from its southern intersection of the Blue Trail over Goat Pasture Hill to its intersection with the Belknap Range Trail near Mt. Anna’s summit. She asked one of the experienced trail maintainers, Jeremy Clark, if he would walk the trail with her and give her some suggestions on what she could do to make the trail better. He ended up helping her on several more outings. They liked doing trail work and they discovered they liked spending time with one another. So much so that a few years later they got married. Last week I joined Bria Clark to help her do the Spring clean-up See PATENAUDE on 32

A Crapshoot

To The Editor: How do you feel about the current cost for gasoline and fuel oil ? Don’t worry because this Administration says that it is transitory. Just try to explain this nonsense. Making matters worse is the constant printing of money and reckless spending that is the driving force for inflation. This is economics 101. Name one thing that Senator Maggie Hassan has done to solve or even alleviate this problem. Has she approached the White House to present her ideas to help ? The simple answer is NO. Isn’t this the reason Senator Hassan was elected to her position of responsibility. I recently listened to a disgruntled motorist complaining about the price of gas which is only part of the problem because the dollar is worth less meaning that there is less buying power to purchase the gas. This country is on the wrong track because of poor directionless leadership at all levels. The past year has been a disaster and the people know it. In a strange turn of events I believe parents will decide the upcoming election because they are angry having been treated with disrespect. The family unit is alive and well and most people now realize that politicians who have refused to listen or even pay attention to them will be replaced in November. Kenneth Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

To The Editor: Before and after John Robert’s was selected to the Supreme Court, he was viewed as a conservative. However not all his voting or rulings have been viewed as conservative. What this means.. at least to me Mr. Ewing is predicting how someone will rule based on past events, schooling or life experiences is just a crapshoot. So stating how Justice Jackson will rule on any issue... well it would be as accurate as your thoughts on a Justice Robert’s ruling. John Brennick, Rochester, NH.

Letter From An Insurrectionist

To The Editor: Every time a Capitol Stormer expresses remorse a Founding Father rolls over in his grave. Most rioters have experienced death threats, strained relationships, and accusations of high treason and terrorism It’s easy to forget that a year ago our way of life was under attack by the government. Private businesses were forced close their doors, curfews, travel restrictions, and mask mandates left Americans feeling angry and unsure where to direct their rage Had I known entering the capitol would label me an insurrectionist I’d laugh. It’s an insult to insurrectionists but I appreciate the insinuation. I would have loved to see the criminals

running our country forcibly removed from office, and should it happen in the future I’ll celebrate again. The United States government isn’t getting toppled by a handful of right-wing vandals with zip ties. If we want the insider traders currently in office gone, we must go after the only thing they care about, money. I will take that lesson into office by proposing a 50% reduction in salary for Congress and donate half of my earnings to help battle the ongoing opioid epidemic. I will use the power of the office to force the governor to legalize marijuana. This will generate millions in tax revenue that currently flows to illegal drug dealers or worse, Massachusetts and Vermont. Before heading off to jail I wanted to offer the people of New Hampshire an apology. I’m sorry our insurrection failed, hopefully it goes better next time. Jason Riddle

Join Ukraine To The Editor: When Bosnian Serbs were committing war crimes, they termed ethnic cleansing, the US and NATO eventually stepped in militarily to stop the bloodshed. A peace deal was then brokered. Today, Russia is committing war crimes in Ukraine. While sanctions will cost Russians financially, they won’t bite quickly enough to stop Russia from continuing See MAILBOAT on 31

The Panama Canal Connection Scott And Williams President rest in Central America in 1964, Richard Nixon, then described as “the former vice-president,” advocated that a new canal be built through Mexico or Nicaragua. The celebration in 1954, however, was to honor General George Goethals for overseeing the construction of the Panama Canal. The memorial consisted of a shaft of Vermont See SMITH on 34

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

“ A man went down to Panama Where many a man had died, To slit the sliding mountains And lift the eternal tide, A man stood up in Panama And the mountains stood aside.” So wrote the poet Percy MacKaye in his poem about the Panama Canal and the chairman and chief engineer of the Isthmian Canal Commission, Col. George W. Goethals, who would later become a Major General. There were actually three Isthmian Canal Commissions with the first appointments being made on March 8, 1904, the second coming on April 1, 1905, and the third on April 1, 1907. It was under Col. Goethals leadership that the Panama Canal was built, with the opening of the passage between the Atlantic

Major General George Washington Goethals and Pacific Oceans for commercial ships taking place on August 15, 1914 with the voyage through the locks of the Steamer Ancon. Another man who was associated with the Panama Canal that Laconians and citizens of New Hampshire can remember is Dr. Richard H. Whitehead. Dr. Whitehead was an engineer with the canal commission and a member of the Goethals Memorial Commission that developed a memorial dedicated to Gen. Goethals in 1954. He was also the Presi-

dent of Scott and Williams Company of Laconia. The company is no longer in existence, but some of the buildings it built are still a part of the Laconia landscape. Dr. Whitehead gave the dedicatory address at the March 31, 1954 ceremony at Balboa in the Canal Zone. Someone noted back then in 1954 that the tendency was to take the Panama Canal for granted, a sentiment that is probably far more the fact of the matter here in the year 2022. New England’s Colonial Meetinghouses and their Impact on American Society On Saturday, May 14th, the New Hampton Historical Society presents photographer Paul Wainwright with the program “New England’s Colonial Meetinghouses and their Impact on American Society “ At 4pm at the Dana Meeting House, 288 Dana Hill Road, New Hampton. This event is free and open to the public. New England’s colonial meetinghouses embody an important yet little- known chapter in American history. Built mostly with tax money, they served as both places of worship and places for town meetings, and were the centers of life in colonial New England communities. Using photographs of the few surviving “mint condition” meetinghouses as illustrations, our presenter tells the story of the society that built and used them, and the lasting impact they have had on American culture. Presenter Paul Wainwright has a long-standing interest in photography and a love of history. He is especially drawn to photographing historic structures in very personal and introspective ways. His work is included in the permanent collections of collectors including the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, NH and the Boston Public Library. His first published photography book “A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England” was released in early 2010. The Historical Society thanks New Hampshire Humanities for providing our 2021-2022 Presenters and Programs.

You’ve seen him as part of the Irish Tenors - now see Ronan Tynan in a more intimate light as he returns to Lexington! The world-renowned singer will bring his trademark charm and unique voice as he performs songs from his rich repertoire of Irish folksongs and American classics. In the spring of 2005, Ronan released his self-titled debut album, which began a new era in his career. “I think it shows a greater versatility than any other album I’ve done,” Tynan has said. Ronan debuted #2 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover Chart, just behind Josh Groban, and was the 8th best-selling classical crossover album of 2005. Tickets for Ronan Tynan at the Colonial Theatre of Laconia on Saturday, June 4th at 4pm are $39-$59 and are on sale now at www.coloniallaconia.com or by calling 1-800-657-8774.

On Saturday, April 30, 11:00am to 1:00pm, the Laconia-Gilford Lions Club again joins with the Green Sanctuary Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia to collect CLEAN SOFT PLASTIC. Volunteers will be in front of the little white Church at 172 Pleasant Street in Laconia. Due to the awesome response from all of you in our greater Laconia community, our collection last month amounted to 317lbs of plastic. Each and everyone who stopped by needs to be thanked. Special mention goes to the retirement communities of Wesley Woods in Gilford and Tayler in Laconia as well as Laconia High Schools Interact Club and St. Vincent de Paul, each of which collected substantial amounts. We ARE collecting plastic grocery bags, vegetable bags, bubble wrap, newspaper sleeves, bread bags, air packing bags, ice bags, dry cleaning bags, wood pellet bags, cereal box liners, and plastic films labeled with #2 or #4 recycling symbols. We can no longer accept pet food bags and we are NOT accepting hard plastic items. What we collect is sent to Trex Corporation in Maine via the Hannaford’s in Gilford to be repurposed into composite decking and outdoor furniture. The March collection of plastic was 80lbs more than what was contributed in February. Earth Day is April 22 so think about setting up a neighborhood collection box. We all want our Earth to shine.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Flatlander Film Festival If you are a film buff you are probably getting excited about the upcoming Cannes File Festival happening in a couple of weeks. by Brendan Smith Some of the Weirs Times Editor best new movies will be premiered for the upcoming season. Still, while the festival in Cannes (pronounced Cannes) gets all the attention, a lot of lesser known, but still very influential, film festivals get no recognition. For example, the famous Flatlander Film Festival will take place the week after Cannes in Rochester (pronounced Rochester). Some of the mostly unknown Flatlander Film makers bring their movies to Rochester for a three-day extravaganza held in the garage at an as yet undisclosed location. (It will be revealed once they can find the garage.) Most of these filmmakers are non-natives of New Hampshire who, for lack of original ideas, have stolen some ideas from classic movies and brought their own, unique, Flatlander spins to the tales. RAIDERS OF THE LOST JUNK- Long Island Jones, a Flatlander archaeologist from New York comes to New Hampshire to try and beat a band of Natives to a unique relic, located at a local town dump, which is central to their plans for world domination (or at least domination of their small town of just under 6,000). The archaeologist is in constant peril, making hairbreadth escapes at every turn and roundabout and finally finds which dump the relic is at. Both the Flatlander and the Natives arrive at the same time only to find (spoiler alert) that the relic has already been taken, along with a broken toaster, two dented picture frames and an old radio with a frayed cord by a Mr. Cal-

lahan who lives somewhere up the road a piece setting up the sequel “Long Island Jones & The Barn Of Doom.” APOCALYPSE SOON – A Flatlander from Connecticut takes a perilous journey on Lake Winnipesaukee to find and terminate Jimmy Kurtz a frequent vacationer to the Lakes Region who has reportedly gone completely mad and thinks he is a real native. Traveling in a pontoon boat filled with a bunch of other oddball Flatlanders and some beer, they start at Alton Bay and head towards the outer reaches of Moultonborough, traveling further into the heart of darkness until they find Kurtz who is now running a bed and breakfast and using odd phrases like “Ayuh” and “So Don’t I.” LAWRENCE OF LAWRENCE –Because of his limited knowledge of native New Hampshirites due to his many summer visits, Lawrence of Lawrence, Massachusetts, is sent to Central New Hampshire to serve as a liaison between the Natives and Flatlanders as another summer season approaches. Going against the orders of his superiors, Lawrence strikes out on a daring journey to a popular local eatery to see if he can secure a window seat, popular with one particular native couple, at 6pm on a Saturday night in late June. The tension will have you on the edge of your seat as both Lawrence and the native couple arrive at the same time (especially if it is a small seat.) NORTH BY NORTHWEST (NOT SURE) - This classic suspense film finds a New York City ad executive pursued by a spy after he is mistaken for a government agent. The harried ad executive ends in New Hampshire, where he asks local natives for directions, only to become confused when he is told “You Can’t Get There From Here” and finds that

it is true. The filmmakers went to great expense (over fifty dollars) to digitally replicate The Old Man Of The Mountain to recreate the famous Mount Rushmore scene from the original. 2022: AN ODYSSEY TO FIND SPACE – A car full of Flatlanders from New York City travels across the space of earth to New Hampshire to hopefully find an affordable home to buy in order to escape the madness of their home city. Unfortunately, their GPS system takes on a mind of its own and tries to sabotage their mission by having them take the longest possible route, costing them valuable time as more and more properties are gobbled up by other Flatlanders at outrageous prices. NIGHT OF THE LIVING LOCALS – An eclectic group of individuals from Massachusetts comes for a stay at an Airbnb in the Lakes Region when a group of nosy local natives keep walking by to see if they can figure out how many people are actually in there and if they are breaking any ordinances. One of the Flatlanders does his best to control the situation, knowing that any loud noise might set the natives off. But when the number of nosy locals surrounding the house increases, including some from other neighborhoods who read what was happening on social media, the other Flatlanders begin to panic. I won’t spoil the ending, but let’s just say, there ends up being plenty to talk about at the next town meeting as well as letters to the editor in the local daily newspaper. Other titles that will be shown over the weekend will be “Singing In The Rain, Snow, Sleet And Ice”, “Alien Flatlander,” and “Breakfast At Tiffany’s - Closed For The Season.” Admission to all three days of movies is $5 ($4 if you bring extra popcorn for all to share.)

Airbnb’s Open Door For Thugs and Drugs “The Angel of Death checks into an Airbnb.” “2 dead, 8 wounded in shooting at Pittsburgh Airbnb party.” “Arrest made in drug deal murder at Florida Airbnb, deputies looking for another suspect.” “Double homicide at Draper (Utah) by Michelle Malkin Airbnb party began with fight over broken Syndicated Columnist beer bottles.” Those bloody local news headlines in Pennsylvania, Florida and Utah last week once again expose the ongoing farce of Big Tech’s “trust and safety” theater. Across America and around the world, violent thugs and rapists, hidden-camera creeps, human and drug traffickers, and wily scammers have hijacked Airbnb rental homes for criminal and nefarious purposes. Yet, it’s peaceful, lawabiding and right-thinking families like mine who’ve been publicly smeared, persecuted, kicked off the online home rental platform and branded “extremist” security threats by vengeful gatekeepers at Airbnb. This persecution of America First conservatives is openly aided and abetted by left-wing witch-hunters at the Southern Poverty Law Center, Anti-Defamation League and The Daily Beast who despise what we believe, who we call family and friends, and to whom we speak. In broke Woke America, patriots are the criminal class and criminals are the protected class. Over the weekend, 200 partygoers in Pittsburgh descended on an Airbnb property before a gunman murdered two teens and wounded 11 others. The San Francisco-based $40 billion “worldwide lodging juggernaut” announced plans to sue the renter for violating its terms of service. This is Public Relations Deflection and Distraction 101. What doesn’t this Trump-hating, open-borders promoting, illegal alien-employing globalist vacation rental platform want you to know about its own culpability in facilitating criminal safe havens? Airbnb (which I will henceforth refer to as Nightmarebnb) touts its myriad “trust and safety” measures, including “risk scoring” of every reservation using “predictive analytics and machine learning to instantly evaluate hundreds of signals that help us flag and investigate suspicious activity before it happens”; “watchlist and See MALKIN on 37

The Covid-19 Authoritarians Panic Over The End Of The Mask Mandates

This week, a federal judge in Florida finally struck down a federal mask mandate from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An extensive number of executive branch agencies have acted in an authoritarian manner by Ben Shapiro throughout the COVSyndicated Columnist ID-19 era: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration infamously attempted to cram down a vaccine mandate on every private employer in America, a policy struck down by the Supreme Court; the CDC blocked evictions for over a year based on the premise that millions would be thrown from their homes if they didn’t take action. But the CDC’s travel mask mandate has been particularly annoying for Americans, given the fact that all over the country, Americans have either been vaccinated or acquired natural immunity, and there is no evidence whatsoever that cloth or surgical masks do anything against the omicron variant of COVID-19. Nonetheless, the CDC pressed forward this month with a new extension to its mask mandate, despite the fact that the CDC simultaneously argued that beginning in late May, it would relieve Title 42, a regulation designed to allow Border Patrol to turn away likely illegal immigrants at the border. That regulation was rooted in the premise that a COVID-19 emergency negated the legal requirement to process asylum seekers. The White House provided zero justification for the CDC’s extension; instead, White House press secretary Jen Psaki struggled to explain why toddlers on planes should remain masked, but attendees at the White House press room didn’t have to. “I’m not a doctor,” she spat. Of course, Psaki’s lack of medical background hasn’t prevented her from announcing that the best standard of medical care requires minors who are gender

confused to receive puberty blockers on the path toward genital-mutilating surgery. But Americans shouldn’t expect consistency from their moral betters in the White House. Upon the announcement of the judge’s ruling striking down the CDC mask mandate on the grounds that the CDC hadn’t actually bothered to follow its own regulatory procedures, the Left went into spasms of apoplexy. Public figures began posting pictures of themselves donning masks on planes: former Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett tweeted, “Wearing my mask no matter what non-scientists tell me I can do”; Roland Martin tweeted, “I don’t give a damn what some grossly unqualified Donald Trump judge said. I’m double masked and wearing goggles on this Nashville to DC flight. I had COVID in December. Y’all can KISS MY ASS about me not wanting it again. And any fool saying they don’t matter is a damn liar.” Now, it should be said that nobody has actively banned anyone from wearing a mask. It is your choice to don one, as epidemiologically useless as such a gesture may be. But those on the Left seem to be under the wild misimpression that anything not prohibited is now mandatory -- an act of pure intellectual projection springing from the Left’s insistence on collective rulemaking. For those on the Left, individual freedom represents a threat to everyone; to allow individuals the ability to choose therefore undermines the entire scheme. Those on the Left simply project this mindset onto everyone else. Thus, they believe that anyone who opposes mask mandates wants to force everyone to unmask. This is untenable but predictable: for those on the Left, the collective is the irreducible unit of politics. There are no individuals. And anyone who disagrees is, in the words of Robin Givhan of The Washington Post, “childish and selfish.” Or perhaps -- just perhaps -- the most childish and selfish among us are those See SHAPIRO on 37

Uber Clueless The media’s ignorance about basic economics is galling. I expect it from politicians. I expect it from The New York Times. But it’s sad to see by John Stossel in the New York Syndicated Columnist Post, my town’s rare alternative to Democrat media. Recently the tabloid freaked out over higher prices imposed by rideshare companies. “New Yorkers are fed up with forking over excessive amounts for Uber and Lyft rides.” Excessive? Just what is “exces-

sive?” Who decides? Prices were already up because gasoline costs more, NYC keeps imposing new taxes and regulations, and the federal government pays so many people not to work that there’s now a shortage of drivers. That day, unusually high “surge” prices were in effect because there had been a horrible shooting on the subway. Commuters, fearful of another subway shooting, turned to ride-share services. How should a company like Uber deal with that? Suddenly, there is much more demand for rides than supply. Should customers just wait in line? Most wouldn’t get a ride for

days. So, ride-share companies do the sensible thing: They temporarily raise prices. They lower them again when there are free cars. This is the best solution for the most people. Those who desperately need rides can pay extra for them. Those with spare time can take a bus, walk, call a friend, etc., or just wait for prices to drop. Higher prices also mean higher pay for drivers, which encourages part-time drivers to drop what they are doing and start offering rides. Such congestion pricing could also reduce traffic jams if politicians gathered the courage to impose it.

But this pretty good solution is not good enough for economically ignorant reporters. The Post said, “Critics say the sticker shock is unsustainable.” “Critics say” is a clue that you are reading the product of lazy reporting. When reporters don’t take the time to search out reliable sources or gather actual data, they simply write, “critics say.” The critics could be their friends, family or a couple of Uber users at the airport. How do these critics know the prices are “unsustainable?” They don’t. Ride share investors, with their own money on the line, know See STOSSEL on 36

Vermont Flexes Foreign Policy Muscles In Ukraine Conflict Bennington, VT Some will smirkingly label the policy showdown as the Mouse that Roared. But in in a small but significant step to condemn the by John J. Metzler ongoing war in Syndicated Columnist Ukraine, the state of Vermont has taken steps, which in the words of Governor Phil Scott, respond to what he called “the illegal and heinous Putin invasion of Ukraine.” The moves which amount to a series of State sanctions and rhetorical warnings come in reaction to widening popular

disdain for Russia’s invasion and dismemberment of Ukraine. Symbolically the first salvo came when Vermont State Liquor stores banned sales of Russian vodka. Though stores stock an amazing array of over 40 imported vodka brands, ranging from Iceland to Poland, the only Russian brand was “Russian Standard.” While liquor stores carry the ubiquitous Stolichnaya label, with six versions, the veritable Stoli is no longer produced in Russia but in the Baltic state of Latvia. Gov. Phil Scott withdrew cases of Russia Standard and has subsequently interned them in local warehouses. Vermont was among

the first of a dozen states, including neighboring New Hampshire, to ban Russian produced vodka sales. Yet, Montpelier’s face-off with Moscow goes beyond vodka. Significantly Governor Scott established a “solidarity Fund” for embattled Ukraine and will donate $643,077, one dollar for each Vermonter, pending Legislative approval, to humanitarian assistance in this East European land far from the Green Mountains. The bill quickly passed the state Assembly on a voice vote with no opposition. In his executive order the Vermont Republican Governor stated, “I know there is little Vermont, 4,500 miles away from Kyiv, can

do or say to impact the horror that has been unleashed against the people of Ukraine by the regime in Moscow, but we must be ready to assist, provide humani-tarian aid and stand firmly and resolutely with our Allies against this brazen attempt to weaken democracy everywhere.” Currently Russia is Vermont’s 11th largest source of imports with nearly $16 million of rubber products imported in 2020. Russia stood at Vermont’s 35th market for its exports, accounting for $3.7 million of Vermont’s global exports of $2.6 billion. Vermont exports to Russia largely See METZLER on 37

Nearly half of adults in the US have high blood pressure (also called hypertension); the causes of which are classified into two categories: Essential Hypertension and Secondary Hypertension. Essential hypertension underlying risk factors include obesity, Type II diabetes, high alcohol intake, high salt diet, Vitamin D deficiency, low potassium, and stress. Secondary Hypertension is said to be harder to pinpoint its source, but likely has to do with underlying hormone imbalances like that in Cushing’s Syndrome (overproduction in cortisol), and hypothyroid-

As a practicing herbalist and avid medicinal plant forager, I help a lot of people with this condition and many times with the very plants that grow in this area (New Hampshire). In this article I will highlight some of these plants whether NH grown or not, and explain how I use them to bring balance to the body. While this knowledge about the plants is passed down through learning about plant medicine, evidence of the efficacy of these plants is established in peer-reviewed published research in which I will link to this article for your review. Hawthorn (Crataegus spp) hawthorn is a tree that grows in the temperate forests. Its leaves, flowers, and berries are used medicinally for heart and circulatory issues, reducing inflammation, high blood pressure, regulating the blood (platelets), and considered an overall tonic for the heart. This tree contains phytochemicals like flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins (phenols (antioxidants)). Phenols in general reduce free radical damage bringing tissue states back to homeo-

stasis. Grataegic acid is shown to have hypotensive qualities through vasorelaxation resulting from nitric oxide stimulation and significant antioxidant activity as well as an overall tonic to the heart. Garlic (Allium sativum) is said to increase nitric oxide production resulting in smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation. Oats (Avena sativa) is considered a trophorestorative to the nervous system which can have profound affects on the stress response. Taken as a tea daily is known to reduce tremors from Lyme disease and in general support the body’s parasympathetic nervous system response. It’s rich fiber contents is shown to reduce the need for hypotensive medications. Yarrow (Achilles millifolium) while the many Native American tribes and bands used yarrow for a myriad of maladies (over 300 uses) and has shown its usefulness as an antimicrobial agent, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, hepatoprotective and anti-oxidant, of particular importance is its use as a hypotensive. It has show to reduce mean arterial pressure possibly through generation of angiotensin II. It is one of my most important plants for hypotension and has shown me time and time again its effectiveness. I tend to blend many

of these plants together to formulate for the individual since different plants exhibit slightly different qualities and actions on the body. For instance, a typical formulation for hypertension would be to address the overall inflammation in the body, address stress if appropriate, and target the underlying issue presented (vasoconstriction). It would look something like this: 1 part Crataegus 1 part Achilles millifolmum .5 part Albizia (another plant useful in reducing stress) .25 part Viscum album 1 part Tillia spp. (Vasodilator, anxiolytic) The blend is typically in either tea (taken daily) or hydro-ethanolic extract (1:5, 50% EtOH) 1 tsp 3 TID. We adjust the dosage as necessary. In my practice I find this formulation works well for most, but many suffer from the hyper stress response in which I will adjust this formulation to account for individual needs. https://blood-pressure. imedpub.com/yarrow-as-anew-weapon-against-hypertension.php? aid=9670 https://www.ncbi.nlm. nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC3210006/ https://www.ncbi.nlm. nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC3891531/ https://naturalhealthmessage.com/linden-flower-benefits/

The Tip Of The Iceberg

by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Health is multifaceted but much of the time when we think about our health, we only move our thoughts to the amount of pain we are currently dealing with. If we feel well we deem ourselves fine. Or we imagine how well we’ve felt in generally in our lifetime and label ourselves healthy or unhealthy. The problem with this outlook is that pain is a poor metric of health. It’s simply the tip of the iceberg. The iceberg only reveals the tiniest portion of itself above the surface of the water. The true size and nature lies hidden below the surface. When a ship runs afoul of what looks like a small piece of ice, it’s error is quickly revealed. My question is this: are we aware that our health can function in a very similar way? Normal one minute and less than ideal the next. Or do we live as if we are invincible? Like we will never be sick and we will never slow down? The truth is that our health, if not looked after properly, can be much like that iceberg. Meaning: many illnesses, diseases, and

health issues appear to crop up instantly or surprisingly, but most have a long time coming underlying cause. That seemingly reveals itself in an instant, but rather has been brewing for much, much longer. So for instance, in the case of heart disease, a heart attack that just occurred, may have been building for years prior. Most diseases that kill us, do take awhile to form, but most are also lifestyle related. This means, you are in the driver seat. You don’t have to be a victim. You don’t have to sit back and wait for a disaster, a bad diagnosis, or terrible health report. You can take control of your health and greatly improve your long term health picture. es, these diseases can sometimes occur and were unpreventable. That can happen. It does mean, however, all your risk of these issues can be improved with certain lifestyle choices. Here are some easy ways to potentially decrease your risk of the most common preventable diseases: 1) Stop smoking: shouldn’t this be obvious now? Save money and save your health. 2) Lose weight: this can help with your risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and stroke. Simply put, we all need to move daily and focus on eating more fruits/veggies and less processed food. 3) Decrease stress: exercise, daily journaling, and daily prayer/ mediation have all been thought to help with stress, which is a factor in depression, hypertension, and even heart disease. 4) Visit you chiropractor: Chiroprac-

Hearing Loss Leads to Lost Cognitive Function

Austin wants to tell you about a very important finding in medical research. Any decline in hearing results in declines in cognitive performance and brain function. Audiology Specialists provides cognitive screening that can measure some aspects of cognitive performance. This is an in-office, computerized screening. This is not an IQ test or list of questions. It is a simple, automated assessment that takes about ten minutes to complete. The results of this screening are not affected by hearing loss. The results help your audiologist determine which hearing aid is most appropriate and ensures your hearing solutions are right for you. The screening can be repeated at any time in the future to identify changes in cognitive performance. Please call for more information or to schedule an appointment at 603-528-7700.

Hiring In-Home Care For Aging Parents by Jeanne Giunti, RN Aging Excellence

When should you start thinking about hiring in-home care help for your aging parents? The answer is yesterday. Most families will adjust to each other’s needs gradually over time until it becomes overwhelming and only then will they reach out for help. Other times something unexpected happens to

affect a senior’s health and family members are left in a panic trying to help cover their care needs. In these challenging times, establishing inhome care can take longer than expected as many agencies have long wait lists. Establishing a relationship early on, with a reputable agency, can give families peace of mind for when the inevitable needs arise. The best way to help avoid this conundrum is to have an action plan in place. Having a team in the home even for a few hours each month in the beginning allows the family to become accustomed to having

people in the home as well as professionals being able to assess the needs of the senior. Having a team on board at the ready can alleviate the panic when a crisis occurs, in this case, the agency will likely be able to get more help as needed. When searching for an in-home care agency look for companies that offer the following: 1. Wellness based care. One that promotes wellbeing through diet, exercise, socialization and mental stimulation. 2. Flexibility in scheduling. Many companies have minimum hours per week.

Shop around for one that offers care based on your needs. 3. 24 hour accessibility and responsiveness. Situations can rapidly change, a company that can respond rapidly to meet your needs is paramount. 4. Policies for caregivers. Some do not require the Covid vaccine for caregivers. Look for one that offers a fully vaccinated staff as well as background checks. 5. Small and local vs. big corporation. A smaller business has its owners and operations managers within reach, and can be more accommodating. Whatever the changing needs of the seniors you care about, early intervention is always best so that you can enjoy time together as a family. Physical Wellbeing Strategies For A Happier Life

by Kelly Chapman Meredith Whole Living Center

Research in the field of Happiness Studies suggests that our physical wellbeing plays a significant role in our ability to nudge our baseline happiness in a better direction over time. It reveals that intentional habits practiced consistently over time can create consistent shifts and trigger our ability to rebound and grow from life’s challenges, also referred to as antifragility. Our physical bodies are not separate from the other parts of our whole, and the way we care for our physical body affects every aspect of our being. While most people understand that ongoing, chronic stress can have hazardous effects on our overall health and happiness, research suggests that it’s not experiencing stress in itself that is the culprit, but the lack of recovery between experiences of stress. When we consistently allow for recovery between events, our systems are able to fortify themselves and become more resilient over time. Recovery activities can be considered

micro, mid or macro, and while they all serve a purpose at various times in our lives, it’s the activities we do consistently that make the biggest impact. MIcro recovery activities are small, daily practices such as taking a small break several times a day to take three to four slow, intentional breaths, or going for a walk, mid recovery activities include getting proper sleep and taking a day off, and macro recovery activities include going on vacation, camping and other more extended periods of rest away from stressors. Significantly, each type of recovery break, when practiced consistently and as needed based on the type of stresses you’re encountering, leads to greater productivity and creativity. And perhaps no relaxation recovery strategy has the most far-reaching impact on our overall health and well-being than consistently getting a good night’s sleep. While it can be tempting to push through

when we’re feeling overwhelmed in the belief that by accomplishing more we can regain control of our stress levels, research consistently shows that this strategy leads to poorer outcomes, including burnout. Exercise is another powerful recovery strategy from stress, anxiety and depression, which all have deleterious effects on our overall happiness and wellbeing. In fact, when it comes to depression, 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week has been shown to improve a major depressive episode as well as any medication. Proper exercise is an essential tool in our toolkit and, like rest recovery activities, has the greatest overall impact on our lives when incorporated consistently. And much like getting a good night’s rest, when we forgo exercise during stressful times or when we believe we don’t have enough time, it’s precisely at those times that we need it most. We don’t even need fan-

cy gym equipment to benefit from the restorative qualities of movement- simply turning on some music and dancing is one of the most potent ways to boost our mood. By better understanding the relationship between stress and recovery, we can shift our perspective on how we experience both daily and major life stressors. By responding appropriately to their magnitude with steady, daily recovery activities as well as greater rest responses as needed, we can turn our stressors into tools for becoming more resilient and antifragile. In turn, when consistently practiced over time, we can nudge our happiness levels even greater not despite life’s challenges, but because of them. This article is part of an ongoing series of distilling evidence-based approaches to increasing happiness based on the work of Tal Ben-Shahar, PhD in his book Happier No Matter What: Cultivating Hope, Resilience & Purpose in Hard Times.

For The Love Of Children

by Leslie Gray, LCMHC

Gray Matters Counseling & Wellness

When a mommy and a daddy love each other very, very much… Ok, you know the rest of the story. I’ll spare you the details. Fast forward a few years and mommy and daddy aren’t getting along so well. The image of spending the rest of their lives together has gone from an idyllic promise at their wedding to what now feels like a prison sentence. Houston, we have a problem. Many couples, regardless as to the composition struggle with if, when, and how to end their relationship once they have determined it has reached the point of no return. This is especially true when there are children involved. Eventually, and in one way or another, push comes to shove, and they will be divvying up their belongings as they go their separate ways. They drive away feeling finally free, shouting their dramatic goodbyes out the window… “Sayonara! Adios! Have a nice life!” (Insert sound of screeching brakes here.) “Except for the kids. I’ll be back for the kids on Monday.” This awkward scene plays out again and again in the

dramatic farewell, when saying goodbye for good is delayed indefinitely due to the undeniable knot that ties them together: children. Years of research has concluded that children do best in emotionally healthy home environments, and that breaking up, rather than trying to ‘make it work’ is best when the relationship cannot be repaired. Albeit true, that does not ensure the children are going to be thrilled about the changes. Maybe they support the decision and feel relieved that they won’t have to deal with the fighting, silent treatments, tension, etc. created by the marital discord... But it’s the children that must bear the brunt of the changes that inevitably follow the end of their parents’ relationship. Those last six words are key: ‘the end of their parents’ relationship.’ The graceful breakup involves mature adults who consider their child’s feelings, support them through the transition, and respect their child’s relationship with the other parent during and following the breakup, despite their own feelings about their ex. The sad truth is that there are many parents who do not honor this code for their children. These parents, both men and women-moms and dads, burden the child with inappropriate stories of how they were ‘wronged’ by their ex, interfere with the child’s relationship with them, and interrogate the child after spending time with

them. Children are naturally resilient and adaptive. And a parental breakup does not have to become the travesty of their childhood. As a matter of fact, children are not automatically traumatized by traumatic or upsetting events. What makes the event traumatizing is the absence of appropriate and effective responses from the adults around them. Parents (and other adults involved) need to be available for the children to help them process what has occurred and help them resume feelings of safety and stability. Adults who handle the breakup immaturely cause unnecessary harm to children, often due to parental alienation. This occurs when adults ‘take sides’ in the breakup and encourage or expect the children to do the same. One parent (or other family members) attempt to pit the child against the other parent out of spite or revenge. They spread rumors, disparage the other parent, or use the children as messengers to hurt the other parent… generally making life miserable for the alienated parent and the child… sometimes to the point that one or the other feels so defeated that they eventually just stop trying. Parental alienation is defined as emotional abuse and is punishable with fines, prison sentences, and mandatory treatment... as it should be. The parents engaging in these behaviors were often abusive to

their partner which led to the breakup in the first place. They often have little or no regard for anyone but themselves, have narcissistic tendencies, and are emotionally immature. Ironically, as a result of parental alienation by these abusers, the children end up with the parent who is the most harmful to the child’s development and wellbeing. A parent’s relationship with their child should not end just because the adult relationship did. One has nothing to do with the other. And parents don’t divorce their children: they divorce each other. So, for the love of the children, leave them out of it. Choose to separate your feelings about your ex from your child’s feelings about their other parent. You might accomplish your goal of hurting your ex, but by doing so you are choosing to intentionally hurt

your own child in ways that will remain with them for a lifetime. If you (or others) have damaged your child’s relationship with their other parent, take immediate steps to make repair. Take full responsibility for your actions, apologize to the child, and get professional help to ensure your commitment to being

the kind of parent your child deserves. Their well-being and future depend on it. Leslie A. Five Reasons To Smile This Mother’s Day (BPT) - Did you know the act of smiling can impact both how you look and how you feel? Dove research finds that one in three women hardly ever smile at themselves because they don’t like what they see in the mirror. Building a posi-

tive relationship with beauty helps women to feel more confident, and every encounter with the mirror can be a positive affirmation for a woman of her beauty. Research has shown that girls replicate their mother’s behaviors about beau-

Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

their hard work can be rewarded with the benefits others enjoy. One of the most significant limiting factors is the desire of those who “have,” to hoard them for themselves and then limit them from those who “have not.” In any case, where limiting equal opportunity to those who are working to achieve success is practiced, it must be considered despicable, heartless and ungodly and must always be reproached and removed. Entitlement becomes dangerous however, when it feeds human flaws and exacerbates problems instead of curing them and improving the human condition. Allow me to explain ways that entitlement does damage. First, it doesn’t recognize the fact that laziness and irresponsibility is a universal problem of life. I have written much in my book, the Bible, about this problem. In my section called the book of Proverbs, I wrote repeatedly about this problem, through Solomon who conveyed my thoughts. Take even a few of these from Proverbs to heart! “Lazy hands make a man poor but diligent hands bring wealth.” (10:4) “do not love sleep or you will grope or stay awake and you will have food to spare.” (20:13) “laziness brings on deep sleep and the shiftless man goes hungry.” (19:15) “the sluggard buries his hands in the dish he will not

even bring it back to his mouth!” (19:24) “a sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing.” (20:4) Laziness and irresponsible living is empirical. When you feed this problem with entitlement it doesn’t help but only hurts. The lazy or irresponsible person become dependent on the “hand out” through entitlement and never seeks to deal with the demotivating factors that keep them in bondage. Love, or healthy assistance, is doing what I told you to do and that is to let them feel the pain of hunger so that it motivates them to work. “if a man will not work, he shall not eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). If anything will motivate them, refusal of entitlements, not entitlements will. This problem is exacerbated when the lazy are not only not working to provide for their needs but using their time for things that are destructive and which reinforce harmful behavior. Another problem related to a public policy of entitlement is that it provides corrupt leaders who seek power over principle to justify their grasp of continued control with the appearance of benevolence toward the unfortunate. As stated above, when a leader’s constituents are legitimately working for equal benefits but are hamstrung by limiting factors, seeking entitlements by changing those factors is noble. When however, en-

Letters From God

QUESTION: Is The Pursuit Of Entitlement Wrong? This is a good and timely question because it has become the driving focus of your country. You should be aware of its benefits and dangers. An entitlement philosophy views others as owing a person or group something that they don’t have and haven’t worked for. It assumes that they deserve to have things given as a special privilege and not through personal sacrifice and effort. At its core, it seeks to have equal possession of all the benefits of life without equal effort to acquire these benefits. Instead of having equal opportunity to achieve whatever is necessary to enjoy these benefits they desire to have them handed to them. It sounds wonderful but it is fraught with fatal flaws. It can be wonderful, to assist people are diligently pursuing benefits others enjoy but because of adverse circumstances in which the “deck is stacked” against them or they reach a glass ceiling, they can’t achieve these benefits. In this case they are deserving of entitlement to opportunity. Every effort should be made to remove those limiting factors so that

titlements are given to mask a political power grab, by appearing to be benevolent to those who don’t deserve or haven’t earned those benefits, it is the height of hypocrisy. It is also destructive to everyone, the “haves” and the “have nots,” when entitlements are really a cover for votes. Rome practiced this before they finally decayed from within. “Bread and Circus,” was more for appeasement and continued political power grab, than it was to meet the legitimate needs of the people. Their ruin would follow because of this deception and so will yours, if you don’t learn my wisdom and use entitlements properly and with the right motives. Your country is tottering and in grave danger. You have many factors which are contributing to your demise. Entitlements is just one. I have written of many others in previous letters. Above all I would exhort you to come back to me and my wisdom. Make me God, once again and turn from your wicked ways. (2 Chronicles 7:14) If you do, your leaders and followers will flourish. If you don’t, you will join the other nations on the scrapheap of history. I write this because I love you and long to see you restored, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Winter Classics And Great Ideas by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

News Item: The Boston Bruins will host the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL’s 2023 Winter Classic next January 2 at Fenway Park. Cool! (Maybe even downright COLD.) This will be the 15th Winter Classic—which involves NHL teams playing outdoors. The Penguins won the first Classic in 2008 with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres at what is now Highmark Stadium. The B’s lost a Classic to the Montreal Canadiens in 2016 at Gillette Stadium by a score of 5-1. Les Canadiens apparently didn’t mind the outdoor elements. In reviewing earlier Classic results, one notes that mostly northern teams participate, as opposed to the likes of Tampa Bay or San Jose. The Florida Panthers may have the NHL’s best record, but Miami will never host a Winter Classic. So my Winter Classic Sport-Thought involves the origin of the Winter Classic. Obviously, someone had that idea. I wonder who? People have good ideas all the time. Pierre de Coubertin pushed for a revival of the ancient Olympics back in the 1890s and “voila,” we got the mod-

Facemasks for hockey goalkeepers. Curling. Pitching wedges. On and on. Of course, there have been plenty of bad ideas. The original Tampa Bay Buccaneer orange uniforms. The designated hitter. The Seattle Kraken. The Edsel. And Prohibition. An earlier SportThought of mine came during a conversation with a student about running. How about a new 5K Road Race? Thus was conceived the NHTI-Delta Dental 5K Road Race. I ran in the 17th annual event in Concord on April 15. Clearly it was a good

idea. Some ideas change the world, like the one Columbus had in 1492. Or the notion of an Internet, conceived by an American military thinker and officially “born” in 1983. As a legislator I’ve had numerous good ideas. Some have become laws. Some, sadly, have not. My colleague, Rep. Tim Lang of Sanbornton, thought of legalizing sports betting in New Hampshire. He got it done—a good idea that’s raised millions of dollars for education in the Granite State while allowing fans to have legal fun and even make some money. Sometimes. Anyway, having long wished to see a Super Bowl played in a rainy deluge, I’m hoping there will be a snowy blizzard in Boston on

January 2. How fun! It could be downright cool … Re: SEATTLE … In case you didn’t “get” the above reference to the Seattle Kraken, that’s the NHL’s newest team which began play this season. This hapless outfit compiled the league’s worst record, except for the PhoeSee MOFFETT on 37

New Hampshire Heritage Museum Trail Puts Spotlight On Canterbury Shaker Village Located on a country road in rural Canterbury just 20 minutes outside New Hampshire’s state capital in

Concord, Canterbury Shaker Village sits on nearly 700 acres, delighting visitors from across the region and beyond. “The history here is just incredible,” said Executive Director Leslie Nolan, who said the property features thirty historic buildings and an extensive network of nature trails, ponds, and gardens for outdoor exploration. Established in 1792, Canterbury Shaker Village is one of the oldest, most typical, and most completely preserved of the Shaker Villages. Subscribing to a revolutionary Christianity that shocked their contemporaries, the Shakers challenged nearly every mainstream ideal of American society, believing in communal ownership, pacifism, dancing in worship, equality of the sexes,

celibacy, and living simply. “They thrived here for 200 years,” explained Nolan, who said the last Shaker sister in residence, Ethel Hudson, died in 1992. “Our mission here is to preserve and interpret the legacy of the Shakers, while providing a place for learning, reflection, and renewal of the human spirit.” This mission is achieved in multiple ways, including indoor and outdoor guided tours that begin on May 14. “On these tours, you will learn about how Shakers impacted agriculture, technology, modern architecture, and design in America,” said Nolan. “The Shakers were very creative and quite unorthodox.” Another highlight from this year’s season includes Wilderness: Light Sizzles Around

Me, an Exhibition by renowned artist Lesley Dill, that will run May 28 – September 11. Featuring a uniquely inspired selection of sculptures and two-dimensional works more than a decade in the making, the exhibition represents Dill’s ongoing investigation into the significant voices and personas of America’s past. “This is a fantastic exhibit in our beautiful new gallery space,” said Nolan. “We are thrilled to show her work.” On Thursday, June 23, Canterbury Shaker Village will host Simply Shaker Annual Fundraiser where guests will enjoy an open house, dinner, and celebration under a tent overlooking Turning Mill Pond. An accompanying online auction will also take place June 10 See SHAKER on 35

An Early Spring Walk by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

It was a classic early spring walk. Expectations were high to see a lot of migrants, but those expectations did not match the calendar. Mid-April can be a tough time for birdwatchers. We know the migrants are coming any day, and we have waited so long that the anticipation gets the better of our waning patience. It’s like the feeling children get on December 22 and 23. The decorations and tree have been up for weeks already, but it’s still not time to celebrate. This is not to say it wasn’t a fruitful walk. I saw a handful of migrants including my first warblers of the season. But instead of dozens of species and 100s of individual birds, as we will get in a few weeks, it was more like a few species and about a dozen individuals. It was a good warmup to the upcoming peak of spring migration. Let’s put it that way. A palm warbler flitted over the small pond and landed on an overhanging branch. It pumped its tail as palm warblers do before taking off for another perch nearby. I’m pretty sure palm warblers were the last war-

A yellow-rumped warbler perches on a branch earlier this spring in New England. blers I photographed in the fall and now they were the first to be photographed this spring. They are definitely one of our more hearty warbler species. A male yellowrumped “Myrtle” warbler tried his hand at fly-catching over the pond as well. He turned to display the namesake yellow patch between his wings at the top of his tail. Two other male yellow-rumped warblers hunted in the same area. A ruby-crowned kinglet entered the scene and flashed its red patch on the top of its head. The hyper little bird flitted from branch to branch, resting no more than a few seconds on each perch. All told, I saw four kinglets on the walk, all ruby-crowned. Another small bird

burst onto the scene. It landed on the trunk of a tree and started methodically climbing up, searching the crevices of the bark for morsels. The brown creeper kept climbing until it was almost out of sight before it flew down to the bottom of a nearby tree trunk before ascending that tree as well. I watched it repeat that pattern about three times before moving on. Other than a lone female mallard and two Canada geese, one of which was sitting on a nest, that was about it for this walk. There were several other signs of springs as well. Painted turtles covered nearly every log and a few green frogs jumped into the water as I strolled the edge of the pond. The See BOSAK on 30

SUZANNE’S WINDOWS

Five Easy DIY Plumbing Fixes You Can Tackle Yourself (BPT) - Dealing with anything plumbing related can sound intimidating, but there are minor repairs homeowners can easily do themselves. As long as you follow the instructions provided with products you’re using, you should be able to fix some common issues - and save a lot of money. Just remember, before tackling anything: Turn off the water to that area first. Here are five common plumbing items you should be able to tackle on your own.

1. Swapping Out A Showerhead -If your showerhead is malfunctioning, or you just want an upgrade, this is a simple fix. A necessary product for this task - or to fix a leaky faucet - is thread

sealant. This will help ensure you won’t have future leaks. Thread sealant tape like Hercules Megatape is easy to use, and comes in several colors, widths, thicknesses and densities. An ideal option for replacing showerheads is Hercules Megatape 1 inch X 1000 inch gray PTFE Tape, which is compatible with virtually any piping system. Wrap thread sealant tape clockwise several revolutions around to fully cover the threads. Clockwise is the same

direction you will be screwing on the showerhead, so applying the tape the same direction prevents the new showerhead from catching the end of the tape and unraveling it. You can watch a short YouTube video showing the process, called “How to Use Hercules Megatape Thread Sealant.” 2. Replacing A Sink Sprayer - Kitchen sink sprayers frequently wear out. If you’re unsure what type of sprayer you

have, bring it (or a picture) to the store to be sure you purchase the correct replacement. If your sink sprayer is older, you may be able to replace just the sprayer without also swapping out the hose. Newer models typically come in one piece, while older ones may have a detachable hose. If the hose is torn or damaged, you may need to replace that as well. Follow the instructions included with your new parts, and keep your thread sealant tape handy, as you will also need it to complete this project. 3. Fixing A Running Toilet -Contrary to what you may think, jiggling the handle will not fix your running toilet. If your toilet is running, it’s probably caused by a faulty floater valve or stop valve (also called a float cup or floater See DIY on 27

Enlist Nature’s Help For Managing Garden Pests by Melinda Myers Put away the harsh chemicals and work in concert with nature to manage pests in the garden. Create an inviting habitat for nature’s pest controllers to enlist their help with your gardening efforts. Lady beetles, praying mantis and other beneficial insects feed on damaging pests like aphids. Just tolerate a bit of damage and wait for the good guys to move in and clean up the problem. Grow a few plants to attract these and other beneficial insects to your landscape. Dill and its relatives attract parasitic wasps, coreopsis brings in the aphid-eating lacewings, and milkweed attracts lady beetles as well as monarch and other butterflies. Then plant members of the aster family to attract spiders that eat a variety of insects. Invite songbirds into your gardens. They add motion and color to the landscape and help manage garden pests. Most songbirds

eat a combination of fruits, berries, seeds, and insects. Their diet varies with the season. During spring and summer, they eat lots of insects and spiders when they are plentiful, easy to catch and an important part of their hatchlings’ diet. A birdbath will help attract them and ben-

If space allows, include a few berry producing shrubs like dogwoods and evergreens for shelter. Leave some leaf litter under trees and shrubs and in the garden for toads that dine on slugs and other insects. Include a shallow pond or water feature. Even a shallow saucer filled with chlorine-free water is effective. Place rocks in and around the water for added toad appeal. Purchase or make your own toad abode from a ceramic or clay pot. Upgrade Your Home, Downgrade Energy Usage

(Family Features) The best home upgrades not only make spaces more livable and energy-efficient but are also cost-effective. Making energy-efficient improvements is a savvy way to save money on utility bills, curb energy usage and add to the house’s value. Consider a variety of home improvement

Install Skylights Skylights are a costeffective option for transforming any room in the home with natural light while also delivering energy-saving benefits. For example, Sun Tunnel Skylights from Velux can be installed in as little as 90 minutes and funnel natural light from the roof through the attic and into the room below with an aesthetic that resembles recessed lighting. Customizable with six diffuser film styles to complement interior design, the skylights can make a home more energy-efficient by reducing reliance on artificial lighting. An optional daylight controller makes it easy for homeowners to adjust natural light entering a room, and a solar nightlight provides a moon-like guiding light at night. Installed with the solar nightlight, the skylights qualify for a 26% federal tax credit on solar property. Add Reflective Window Film When the sun shines through windows, it can heat up the home’s interior quickly and trigger the air conditioner to turn on. USAGE from 24 help, but adding low-e reflective window film to your windowpanes, particularly southern-facing ones, can provide an additional shield from the sun’s hot rays and reduce energy costs. Install a Programmable Thermostat A programmable thermostat is an efficient way to control the climate inside your home, and those with smart technology take programming to a whole new level. Today’s smart thermostats not only let homeowners control temperatures from their smart devices while on-the-go but can also learn daily

habits and adjust the temperature accordingly with no other manual adjustments necessary. In addition, some utility companies offer incentives like money back at the end of the year for installing a smart thermostat because the energy savings are so substantial. Replace Appliances Because appliances like refrigerators and ovens, among others, are major energy users, investing in more efficient models provides both cost and energy savings. Additionally, homes more than 15 years old could benefit from updates to the air conditioner or heater as systems 15-

20 years old or older may be candidates for replacement as they’re inefficient by today’s standards. Add Ceiling Fans In comparison to running your air conditioner consistently, the cost of running a ceiling fan (or several) is significantly less. Particularly on days that may not require cooling the en-

tire house completely, fans can provide a gentle breeze and circulate air in the spaces you use most often. Simply adjust the switch to the counterclockwise position to ensure it’s pushing air downward during warmer months. DIY from 22 switch). That large bulb floating in the toilet tank prevents the continuous flow of fresh water into your toilet once the tank is filled, but if the valve is old and no longer prevents water from getting through, the tank will keep filling - hence the constant running, which is annoying and wastes water. The best approach is simply to replace the entire toilet tank float valve assembly, which you can purchase at your local hardware or home improvement store. These come with complete instructions, and there’s no need to be nervous about using your hands in the tank, as the water there is clean. 4. Repairing A Toilet Flange - The toilet flange helps secure your toilet to the floor.

If yours is damaged, you may see leaking near the toilet base or water pooling on the floor. You might also notice unpleasant smells, or your toilet could shift or rock (the entire toilet, not the seat). Fortunately, the Oatey Fix-it Repair Ring securely repairs broken, cracked or wornout toilet mounting flanges, so you won’t have to replace the entire flange. The Fix-It Repair Ring is compatible with all flange and toilet installations as well as flooring types (including concrete), and has 10 mounting holes and four slotted mounting tabs for a wide range of installation options. It’s designed for easy and reliable installation, with a perfect-length bolt slot that prevents bending during installation and provides

secure, level, leak-free repairs. Learn how to install the Fix-It Repair Ring from the YouTube video, “How to Repair a Broken Toilet Flange.” 5. Unclogging Drains - Before calling a plumber, try a

plunger and/or snake. The quick fix for any clogged drain is a liquid drain cleaner, but certain chemical cleaners can damage some pipes if used incorrectly. However, some cleaners are beneficial if used properly. Make sure

to choose the right one for the type of drain you’re trying to clean. For kitchen blockages, use a drain cleaner that removes fat and grease. For bathrooms, choose one formulated for soap scum and hair. Proactively using baking soda and vin-

egar can help prevent drains from clogging. With these tips, you can safely tackle some simple plumbing repairs. Visit Oatey.com for a variety of handy DIY repair products.

MYERS from 23 a shady location near a garden filled with protein-rich insects. Set it directly on the soil and elevate one side with stones or use a cracked or broken pot that provides an entryway for the toad. If you can’t wait for nature’s help, look for more eco-friendly options. Knock aphids and mites off plants with a strong blast of water. Trap slugs with shallow cans filled with beer. Trap and kill aphids in yellow bowls

filled with soapy water. Use barriers of floating row covers to keep pests like cabbage worms, Japanese beetles and bean beetles off plants that don’t need bees for pollination. These fabrics let air, light and water through so just loosely cover the plants at planting, anchor the edges and allow the plants to support the fabric. Use these fabrics to help manage squash vine borer and squash bugs. Cover squash plants at planting.

Remove the fabric as soon as the plants begin flowering for bees to pollinate the flowers. Only use this method if these pests were not a problem in this area of the garden the previous growing season. Remove and destroy, smash, or prune out pest-infested stems as they are found. Enlist the help of young gardeners. Teach them the difference between the good and bad bugs in the garden. Then show them how to pluck, drop and stomp the

plant-damaging pests. They’ll burn off some excess energy while helping maintain your garden. If you decide to intervene with a chemical control, look for the most eco-friendly option on the market. Always read and follow label directions as these chemicals are designed to kill insects and if misapplied can harm beneficial insects as well. Join me April 27th at 6:30pm CT for a free webinar, Organic Pest Management for Vegetable and Flower Gardens. Click here to register or visit www. MelindaMyers.com. Bria clearing the leaves and debris out of the water bar. Bria built this stone water bar five years ago with the help from the man who would become her husband a few years later. She first met her husband at a BRATTS meeting. Cleaning water bars are an important part of trail maintenance to protect the trails from erosion. Constructing a water bar makes for lasting memories. PATENAUDE from 1 on her adopted trail. We met at 9 am at the trailhead parking at the dead-end of Alton Mountain Road in Alton. Nearing the parking area there are numerous No Parking signs, please be respectful of the private landowners. If people park smartly there is room for more than a dozen cars. There is a kiosk with a large map of the hiking trails here. In our backpacks we each carried our tending tools–loppers, a folding saw and a hoe/rake. And we were happy to beat the Black Flies out this spring. We headed west and down the hill on the Old Stage Road/ red-blue trail. At the bottom there is a small pond and we had no issues crossing its outlet. It appears the beavers have left town and the culvert and stone work done by the snowmobile trail folks are working well. Where the Red Trail crosses the Old Stage

Road/red-blue, there is a mini-kiosk trail sign pointing the direction to the trails and mountains, but no distances. There is a nice map on the BRATTS website, trails are blazed with the color they are named and there are signs at each intersection. We turned right on the Red Trail and we headed up to Mt. Anna. In a short distance the ruins of a farm’s old stone cellar hole are on the right. Then, with our loppers in hand we clipped branches and tossed sticks off the trail. When we reached a small stream crossing Bria took her hoe/rake off her pack and extended its handle and then she began to rake the leaves out of the water bar. As she worked she told me they had built this with stones they See PATENAUDE on 33

This is where we ate our lunch, on the Blue Trail over looking this swampy pond that is located between the Old Stage Road and Goat Pasture Hill. There are over 65 miles of trails in the Belknaps and if you hike every mile you can earn the Belknap Range Redliner Patch. Visit BelknapTrailTenders. org for more information about the patch. You can find a map of the Belknap Ranage at BelknapRangeTrails.org. PATENAUDE from 32 found nearby; this was one of their first projects together. The stone water bar allows the water to cross instead of running down the trail. It is important to keep water bars clear of leaves and debris so the water can run through it and protect the trail from erosion. Near the intersection of the Belknap Range Trail we worked trimming the Juniper Brush back from the trail and we tried to do it neatly so it looked natural. This took a little extra effort. We took a short detour into the woods to walk over the actual highpoint of Mt. Anna, which is a short distance north of the red Anna sign at the intersection. Instead of retracing our steps we decided to take the Blue-Anna Trail all the way to the intersection of the Red/ Goat Pasture Hill and make a big loop hike. Just 2/10th down the trail there is an open ledge with a wide vista to

enjoy. We could see the nearby lakes below and many far off mountains including Pats Peak! The trail then follows along the bank of West Brook. Its cascading waters looked and sounded beautiful. We crossed the Old Stage Road and continued on over rolling terrain and past a wonderful rocky perch looking over a swampy pond that West Brook flows through and there is a large beaver lodge in the middle of it. We took a short break here. I ate my peanut butter and honey sandwich while Bria munched on cold pizza. We resumed our trail work back on the Red Trail/Goat Pasture Hill. This climb was our steepest of the day and a chipmunk taunted us with puffing cheeks as it peered between a crack in the ledges. Bria reminded me several times that this was one of her favorite trails. We clipped a lot of suckers growing off of previously clipped

growth. Just north of the Hill’s highpoint there is a wonderful outlook to the northeast over to the cliffs above the Precipice Path and since the trees are still bare we could see ledges on Straightback Mountain. As we descended we ran into a tree that had blown down across the trail. We whipped out our saws and Bria beat me to the punch. She made quick work of cutting that 5 inch diameter tree and it went clunk onto the trail. The two of us worked together to drag the tree off the trail. Back at the Old Stage Road we followed it back to our cars. It was nearly 1pm and we had covered just over 5 miles. Before we hit the road we sat at the picnic table next to the parking lot kiosk and enjoyed delicious lemon blueberry cookies. Have Fun. The BRATTS annual meeting is 6pm on May 5th at the Gilford Town Library.

Goethals was erected under the authority of an act of Congress which appropriated $160,000 for the project. In his dedicatory address, Dr. Whitehead spoke of past events that led up to the construction of the Canal. The Ithmus of Panama, he proclaimed, had for centuries been a barrier between the Atlantic and pacific oceans, “It remained,” he said, “for Gen. George W. cleaning and counting screws, nuts, bolts, and such that were manufactured by the machinists at the Lakeport factory. I don’t have the dates that Dr. Whitehead was President of the company, but I think he was serving as such at that time. Whitehead, who had been a Testing Engineer for the Isthmian Canal Commission, as the speaker for the Goethals Memorial Commission, recalled that Ferdinand DeLesseps of France was the first to attempt to build a canal across Panama. The Panama railroad had previously been built so as to navigate the lowest pass that could be found on the land between the oceans, that being at 287 feet. The Frenchman, Delesseps, had completed the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869 and was engaged to attempt a canal through Panama. The challenges at Panama, with its rugged terrain, proved too great, however, for DeLesseps to construct the sea- level canal that he envisioned. With the French Canal Company he organized, and the Panama Railroad, which he purchased, he began excavating land in the year 1881, but his company experienced failure in 1889. It was the persistent resolve of President Theodore Roosevelt and the knowledge and wisdom of American civil engineer John F. Stevens and Col. Goethals that resulted in the completion of the Canal. When Stevens resigned from his position Roosevelt turned to the Army Corps of Engineers and Col. Goethals to take charge with the understanding that an army officer could not resign and “that continuity would be secured.”

In his dedicatory address at the Goethal Memorial dedication, Dr. Whitehead said: “The ‘Colonel,’ as we knew him on the Ithmus, became our great leader and the builder of the canal. Here we canal diggers wrested with and harnessed the forces of nature on a hitherto unknown scale, in a jungle setting of an alien and inhospitable clime. Finally, a great international waterway was achieved that is in the last analysis a huge water-elevator powered by the Chagres working with clocklike precision – transporting from ocean to ocean an increasing procession of ships laden with the produce of all nations. Under Goethals our faith moved mountains.” The success of Col. Goethals in constructing the Panama Canal is attributed to the fact that he insisted on a “lock” canal and his inspirational leadership in constructing that canal. Whitehead quoted Goethal’s advice on leadership to the class of 1912 at the United States Military Academy at West Point when he told the graduates that to be successful in the control, direction, and command of men they “ ...must have not only accurate knowledge of their capabilities, but a just appreciation and a full recognition of their needs and rights as fellow men. In other words, be considerate, just, and fair with them in all dealings...” I expect that Dr. Whitehead sought to follow that advice in his leadership role at the Scott and Williams Company.

STOSSEL from 7 more about what is sustainable. If prices were really unsustainable, the company would go out of business. The reporter went further: “critics say (the fares are) ... sometimes downright unethical.” Unethical? Uber drivers don’t force people into their cars. They don’t even trick us with advertising. In fact, they do the opposite. Before I can

book a ride, I get a message warning me that the cost will be “higher due to increased demand.” Economist Don Boudreaux wrote the Post (good for the Post for publishing his letter): “Prices reflect underlying realities of demand and supply. In New York City, rising crime (thanks, Bill de Blasio!) simultaneously raises the demand for Uber rides as it lowers the supply of such rides. These realities cannot

help but push fares upward.” Right. Uber and Lyft are great innovations. They forced taxi monopolies to treat customers better and let ordinary people use their cars to drive for money. But businesses get clobbered in the media whenever there’s an aberration. On that day, social media exploded with comments like, “Fare surge after a mass shooting ... Shame on you @Uber.”

The companies quickly went into damage control mode. “Our hearts go out to the victims,” tweeted Uber Support. “We disabled surge pricing in the area.” Disabling surge pricing may be good PR, but it’s a terrible practice. At the beginning of the pandemic, when toilet paper and hand sanitizer were scarce, politicians told people, “Report merchants who raise prices!” They called that “illegal price

gouging.” But “gouging” was a good thing even then. It disincentivized hoarding and got suppliers to make more of the products we need most. Yes, today “gouging” is often illegal. But that’s only because when it comes to what makes markets work, well, most politicians and reporters are just clueless.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, April 28, 2022 — MALKIN from 6 background checks” of hosts and guests; and “safety workshops” and “scam prevention” tools to provide “a multilayer defense strategy.” Since 2016, when Donald Trump became president, Nightmarebnb has very publicly and zealously employed its vetting tools to purge the accounts of proAmerica nationalists (like brown-skinned me and my private family members) who are tarred as “white supremacists” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. That’s the same lie machine whose reckless designation of the conservative Family Research Council as a “hate group” inspired convicted gunman Floyd Corkins to break into its Washington, D.C., office to try to kill “as many people as possible.” Despite settling a defamation lawsuit by the Family Research Council for $3.4 million, the Southern Poverty Law Center slimeballs continue to be primary research sources for media, tech companies, the government and Nightmarebnb’s secret thought police goon squad. Just like the Clinton, Obama and Biden administrations, Nightmarebnb CEO Brian Chesky and his minions devote enormous time and resources to perpetuating the perniciously false narrative that “racism” and “lack of diversity” are the biggest safety and security scourges plaguing our country and their business. Meanwhile, the company employs a secret “black box” team of ex-military officials, crisis management operatives, and former top Clinton and Obama White House staffers that reportedly pays out $50 million a year

to cover up rapes, murders and other grisly crimes committed in Nightmarebnb rentals around the globe. Crime victims are wined, dined and paid off with massive settlements -- then gagged from discussing their cases. Nightmarebnb’s ruthless whitewashing of violence, sexual assaults, and human and drug trafficking should be the subject of congressional and law enforcement investigations worldwide -- especially as its woke leaders throw open their doors to hundreds of thousands of unvetted refugees from Afghanistan, Ukraine and elsewhere. Instead, the powers that be cower, cackle or conspire in the cover-up. As for me, on behalf of my family, I am pressing forward with my own lonely battle to hold Nightmarebnb accountable for defying anti-discrimination laws and retaliating against my journalism and political activism. Deepest thanks to the kind supporters who’ve offered to host us on our travels and to the 825 donors who’ve supported my crowdfunding campaign to take legal action against the woke smear merchants (go to https://fundly. com/michellefightsairbnb to donate). Trust and safety might not be such bad jokes if more Americans cared about the plight of their fellow citizens who’ve become political refugees in their own homeland while a flood of scumbags take over their neighborhoods in the name of “inclusion” and “diversity.”

Symbolically Scott called for a suspension of sister city relations between Vermont towns and Russian towns. In fact Vermont’s largest city Burlington has a long established sister city with the Russian city of Yaroslavl; the deal dates to 1988 was set up when Bernie Sanders was Bur-lington’s Progressive mayor. Miro Weinberger, current Burlington’s mayor has suspended the relationship which he argued, “should not legitimize Putin’s antidemocratic actions.” Meanwhile, the Vermont State Police announced that law enforcement agencies would be gathering bulletproof vests for shipment to embattled Ukraine; 1,000 body armor vests have been collected! There’s a bit of virtue signaling too with blue and yellow Ukrainian flags spouting like Spring flowers in many towns and villages like Bennington and Manchester. The Bennington Battle monument, honoring the Revolutionary War battle, is bathed in the Ukrainian colors; the obelisk will be lit each evening for six weeks in Solidarity with Ukraine. Much of this current political palaver comes with a twist of irony; back in the 1980’s many Vermont “progressives” were in the lead criticizing the Reagan Administration’s efforts to isolate the former Soviet Union. Many openly smirked at Reagan’s characterization of the Soviets as
