Lake Winnipesaukee Museum Begins New Season With Exciting Changes taking, and in the early years of the twenty-first century, the museum was finally open to the public. Today, over a decade later, the historical society is still going strong and the finishing touches are being applied to the newly renovated barn which will make it an area showcase for histori-

cal presentations, speakers and events. Open now for the summer season, the museum has recently added a yearround, part-time director, Melanie Benton, who will work, along with the museum’s summer curator, Lynda LaFlamme, in introducing this facility to the community at large beginning on Saturday,

June 29th when one of the museum’s most popular speakers, Hans Hug, Jr, will officially kick off the Saturday speaker series with the latest version of his “What Lies Beneath” program detailing his findings while diving in Lake Winnipesauekee. “We are very happy to have Melanie on board,” See museum on 22

The Winnipesaukee Playhouse Presents Noises Off MEREDITH - Garry, Dotty, Brooke, Frederick, Belinda and Selsdon are all actors in an ill-rehearsed play called Nothing On. Add director Lloyd and stage managers Poppy and Tim into the mix and you get to see into the entertaining love triangles that form as the Winnipesaukee Playhouse kicks off their 2013 Professional Summer Season with a hilarious production of “Noises Off “ in their brand new Meredith theatre from June 19th through the 29th. “Noises Off” follows the on-and off-stage antics of an acting troupe as they stumble from bumbling dress rehearsal to disastrous closing night. Everything that can go wrong does, as actors desperately try to hang on to their lines, their performances and the furniture. Performances start June 19th and are Mondays through Saturdays at 7:30pm with a matinee at 2pm on Monday. The Wednesday, June 26th performance will include a post-show discussion and Q & A with the cast and crew. The Blue Trail is straight ahead and leads to the other Mount Cabot, elevation 1,512 feet. The trails to Cabot’s summit, Ingalls Mountain and Crow’s Nest have been adopted by the Sherburne Trails Club. Great views for modest effort are to be found in this beautiful uncrowded area near the New Hampshire and Maine border. Just a short time ago I was hiking in the snow and then the following weekend I was sweating bullets in temperatures that reached the 90s! Since I didn’t have a hiking friend wanting to chase 4,000 footers I decided to visit someplace new to me. I was looking at an old AMC White Mountain Guide’s map and the trails just east of Gorham caught my eye. The old guide’s description read, “Running S and SE from Mt. Success is a range of mountains of diminishing height, comprised of Mts. Ignalls, and Cabot, Crow’s Nest and Hark Hill.” I remembered one of Steve Smith’s blogs, found at mountainwanderer.com, about trails on Ingalls

Mountain (elev. 2,242 ft) and Mount Cabot (elev. 1,512 ft) being adopted by the Sherburne Trails Club. Since I didn’t have my new guide book or map nor internet access, I was hoping that I was remembering correctly as I drove to the Philbrook Farm Inn in Sherburne, NH. I stopped at the Inn and I was given permission to park at the west side of the Inn near the beginning of the trail. (I have since learned that five generations of the Philbrook family have continuously lived here and operated the inn and guest houses—what a legacy for such a beautiful place!) I shouldered my pack that contained the minimum of what I might need

if I were unlucky enough to spend the night in woods, a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, a liter bottle of water and a FRS energy drink. I marched up an old narrow road past a few cottages, hoping I was on the right path. My doubts were erased when I arrived at a fork where a big pine tree was blazed with large red, blue and yellow squares. Just above the blazes was a little white sign pointing the way to each of the trails named after the primary colors. I went straight up the Blue Trail making my way to the summit of Cabot. The trail was enjoyable and the footing very soft since the trail appears to be lightly traveled. Near the top Pink Lady’s SlipSee patenaude on 14

Facts About N.H. Highway RevenueRoads & Bridges To The Editor: A letter in the Laconia Sun by two former Democrat Legislators, Deb Reynolds of Plymouth and Kate Miller of Meredith, claim roads and bridges in NH are deficient because the Senate Republicans refuse to pass new taxes. Conveniently, the former legislators did not mention, as stated by State Senator Andy Sanborn;-- in the Granite Status May 26-”the state is spending $600 Million a year on roads and bridges, 20% more than 2008” In 2008 both Reynolds and Miller held office. Additional facts: 1. in 2009, Governor John Lynch, raided the Highway Fund of $8 Million Dollars in an effort to balance a bloated budget created by the democratic legislature. This is the same fund that uses revenue to repair roads and bridges. Where were Reynolds and Miller when the raid was taking place? They were silent! 2. State ConstitutionArt 6-a ( in part) “All revenue accruing to the State from Road Tolls, gasoline etc, shall be exclusively for maintenance of public highways. No part of revenue shall be diverted to any other purpose”. In my opinion: not only is it disingenuous it is hypocritical to criticize the Senate Republicans for refusing to pass new taxes when it was Reynolds, Miller and others who gave tacit approval to Governor

Fool Me Once To The Editor: We now know that the NSA (National Security Agency) is capable of and has, in fact, monitored, recorded and stored the telephone and internet communication of innocent American citizens. We are being told that this is part of the cost of doing business when it comes to protecting us from terrorists and that we should trust the federal government to not abuse the power that this information gives them. Does anyone remember recent revelations that the IRS and several other federal agencies under the current administration have used their powers to target and harass people and groups who disagree with this administration’s policies? What’s that old saying about “fool me once……”? God bless Edward Snowden for revealing this outrageous intrusion on the privacy of American citizens.

China Buying U.S. Companies To The Editor: Chinese companies spent $6.5 billion to purchase U.S. companies in 2012, which broke the previous record of $5.2 billion in 2010. It appears the Chinese acquisitions of U.S. companies could exceed $10 billion in 2013. In May 2013 Shuanghui International agreed to purchase Smithfield Foods. Smithfield is the world’s largest hog producer with 460 farms and contracts with 2,100 others across the U.S. Will the hog supply be diverted from the U.S. to feed China’s burgeoning population? Will China’s poor food safety record and the manufacture of low quality products impact Smithfield’s operations? Hopefully, Midwestern states will be able to block the sale with laws that prohibit foreign ownership of farmland. A Chinese consortium purchased International Lease Finance Corp. (ILFC), which owns and leases over 1,000 aircraft and has relationships with many airlines. In 2012 Chinese companies purchased AMC Entertainment, one of the largest movie theater chains in the U.S. The U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment should deny Chinese acquisitions if they impact our national security or our country’s economic well-being. Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Single Ideas

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

Being a married man, I am glad that I don’t have to deal with the dating scene any longer. Still, I must admit, it has become much more convenient nowadays. It seems that every time I turn on the television or go on the Internet, there is an advertisement for a new dating site. A few years back I can’t recall many online dating options being advertised besides Match.com and eharmony. Nowadays it seems as though every one is jumping onto the dating bandwagon as more and more websites are being advertised that are devoted to dating options for a specific segment of society. There is now an online dating site for athletic people as well as those with different political and religious beliefs. The latest one that caught my attention was one called Farmersomny. com. This is dating site where people who like farming and farming related stuff can meet; possibly a date over a warm glass of goat milk or some fresh turnips. By joining this site you don’t have to worry about accidentally wasting your time meeting some obnoxious transplant from New York or Massachussetts. Their slogan is, and I kid you not, “City Folks Just Don’t Understand. I was very upset with this for two reasons. The first was that not all city

folks are really that bad. Secondly, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t come up with this one myself. Some of these dating sites are making someone, somewhere a bunch of money. Why not me? Then I could be doing other things besides sitting in my pajamas on a Saturday morning writing this column. So, in an effort not to be beaten to the punch again, I have some up with some of my own ideas for a few, more tailored, dating sites. I think there should be a dating site for people who hate dating sites. Maybe call it something clever like Ihatedatingsites.com. This would be for people who have had nothing but bad experiences on dating sites and have sworn never to use one again. Their slogan could be “We’re Not A Dating Site, We’re A Dating Site That Hates Dating Sites. I’m sure it would fool enough people out of their $29.95 a month to make some good money until they realized it was, basically, no different from all of the sites they hated in the first place. Of course, in reaction to Farmersonly.com there would have to be Anyonebutafarmer.com. Personally, I have nothing against farmers, but in the interest of fair play I think the slogan in this would be: “Farmers Are Just Weird. People who meet and date through Anyonebutafarmer.com would be required to make sure that no meals are consumed where locally grown, fresh food products are served. It only seems fair. Some dating sites could be very specific. There could be a dating site for people who always make their best effort to pick up just enough groceries to always use the

14 items or less line. The slogan: “Let’s Check Each Other Out would encourage a first meeting at their local supermarket. (There could even be a more specific site for those who use the self-serve cashier. Their slogan? “Let Me Check You Checking Yourself Out of course. Gamblers could have their own dating site: “Being Crapping Out On Love? Go All In With Us. Straights Only Please. I will gladly give up this idea to our Governor and some legislators as a possible source of future revenue for New Hampshire to be included in next year’s budget. A dating site for people who are left-handed might be a money maker. I think, “Love Doesn’t Always Have To Be Right would be an effective slogan. Of course, like most of my ideas, I will probably never do anything about these. In fact, there should be a dating site just for procrastinators. But, I can’t think of anyone who would take the time to do it. If you are single and in the dating scene, I hope this helped. I send my condolences. ********* Shameless Self-Promotion: My new book “The Flatlander Chronicles is about a month or so away from publication. Containing the best of my early columns from The Weirs Times it will be published by Piscataqua Press out of Portsmouth. If you’d like to keep posted on the publication date or be notified when advance orders are being taken send your e-mail to Brendan@weirs.com or drop a line to Brendan Smith, The Weirs Times, PO Box 5386, Weirs, NH. 03247.

From The State House NH State Board of Education = Common Core Recently SB 48, relative to school performance and accountability, came through our NH House. It passed the House 198 – 134, despite a by Rep. Jane Republican atCormier tempt to “lay it Belknap District 8 on the table”. But now, the REST of the story… SB 48 redefines assessment and tracking from NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND with “Adequate Yearly Progress” from Common Core aligned assessments with “focus” and “priority” schools. Basically, SB 48 will force Common Core into every district of our state. This is not a good thing for education, teachers, or parents in the state of New Hampshire. On June 13, a group of Representatives decided to attend a

NH Board of Education meeting and sad to say, we did not leave the meeting feeling as though the dialogue surrounding Common Core was open or indeed, desired. The meeting began with the Chair, Tom Raffio, discussing the fact that the board does not necessarily answer or respond to issues brought up in the public hearing (isn’t that what they are for?) Evidently, the board usually “listens” but doesn’t necessarily comment. Hmmm…. Also, when discussing the fact that several Representatives (myself, Cordelli, Pitre, Sandblade) were going to speak at the hearing, he repeated twice with regard to the implementation of Common Core, “…the train has left the station.” The first time he said that, I found it odd. The second time, it was clear the message intended was ‘you can speak, but it won’t make any difference.’ I was happy to point out the “train”

Obama’s Definition of “Smarter Enforcement”: None Welcome to Opposite World again. As the U.S. Senate geared up yesterday for the Gang of Eight illegal alien amnesty bill debate, by Michelle Malkin P r e s i d e n t Syndicated Columnist Obama goaded Capitol Hill to pass what he called “smarter enforcement, a pathway to earned citizenship and improvements to the legal system” of immigration. Bullcrap. The White House has already bulldozed a traffic-jammed superhighway for immigration law-breakers by executive fiat. Obama and his open-borders pals pay lip service to fairness and the rule of law for the cameras. But behind closed doors and beyond the reach of public accountability, they’ve already paved the way for mass deportation waivers. Read their actions, not their lips. The official White House operating policy is: No illegal alien left behind. “Smarter enforcement” means no enforcement. Remember: Exactly one year ago this week, the president announced he would halt all deportations and start granting work permits to an estimated 2.1 million illegal aliens who entered the country as children. This blanket amnesty through administrative non-enforcement has been plagued by questions of fraud from the get-go. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, statistics from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services show that the feds have rubber-stamped applications at a whopping 99.5 percent approval rate. And fraudulent use of Social Security numbers is no problem for the so-called “DREAM”-ers. The feds reassured them last fall

that they wouldn’t have to disclose how many and which phony or stolen Social Security numbers they’ve used. “Smarter enforcement”? Tell that to the rank-and-file Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who refused to look the other way at Obama’s executive subversion of the law. ICE agent Christopher Crane and eight other officers filed suit against the White House over the DREAM deportation waiver program’s usurpation of their ability and authority to do their jobs. The Gang of Eight plan would provide the executive branch “virtually unlimited discretion” to cut off immigration enforcement officers at the knees. As Crane testified in a searing statement on Capitol Hill in April: “Lawmaking in our nation has indeed taken a strange twist. Senators invite illegal aliens to testify before Congress ... but American citizens working as law enforcement officers within our nation’s broken immigration system are purposely excluded from the process and prohibited from providing input. Suffice it to say, following the Boston terrorist attack, I was appalled to hear the Gang of Eight telling America that its legislation was what American law enforcement needs.” In April, a federal judge in Texas agreed with the ICE agents that King Obama could not order them to ignore immigration laws at his whim. A decision on their motion for preliminary injunction is expected any day now. Kansas Secretary of State and immigration enforcement legal eagle Kris Kobach broke it down for me yesterday: “The federal judge in Crane v. Napolitano has ruled that the ICE agents are likely to prevail in their argument that the Obama

Economics vs. ‘Need’ One of the most common arguments for allowing more immigration is that there is a “need” for foreign workers to do “jobs that Americans by Thomas Sowell won’t do,” esSyndicated Columnist pecially in agriculture. One of my most vivid memories of the late Armen Alchian, an internationally renowned economist at UCLA, involved a lunch at which one of the younger members of the economics department got up to go get some more coffee. Being a considerate sort, the young man asked, “Does anyone else need more coffee?” “Need?” Alchian said loudly, in a cutting tone that clearly conveyed his dismay and disgust at hearing an economist using such a word. A recent editorial on immigration in the Wall Street Journal brought back the memory of Alchian’s response, when I read the editorial’s statement about “the needs of an industry in which labor shortages can run as high as 20 percent” -- namely agriculture. Although “need” is a word often used in politics and in the media, from an economic standpoint there is no such thing as an objective and quantifiable “need.” You might think that we all obviously need food to live. But however urgent it may be to have some food, nevertheless beyond some point food becomes not only unnecessary but even counterproductive and dangerous. Widespread obesity among Americans shows that many have already gone too far with food. This is not just a matter of semantics, but of economics. In the real world, employers compete for workers, just as they compete for customers for their output. And workers go where there is more demand for them, as expressed by what employers offer to pay. Farmers may wish for more farm workers, just as any of us may wish for anything we would like to have. But that is wholly different from thinking that some third party should define what we desire as a “need,” much less

expect government policy to meet that “need.” In a market economy, when farmers are seeking more farm workers, the most obvious way to get them is to raise the wage rate until they attract enough people away from alternative occupations -- or from unemployment. With the higher labor costs that this would entail, the number of workers that farmers “need” would undoubtedly be less than what it would have been if there were more workers available at lower wage rates, such as immigrants from Mexico. It is no doubt more convenient and profitable to the farmers to import workers at lower pay than to pay American workers more. But bringing in more immigrants is not without costs to other Americans, including both financial costs in a welfare state and social costs, of which increased crime rates are just one. Some advocates of increased immigration have raised the specter of higher food prices without foreign farm workers. But the price that farmers receive for their produce is usually a fraction of what the consumers pay at the supermarket. And what the farmers pay the farm workers is a fraction of what the farmer gets for the produce. In other words, even if labor costs doubled, the rise in prices at the supermarket might be barely noticeable. What are called “jobs that Americans will not do” are in fact jobs at which not enough Americans will work at the current wage rate that some employers are offering. This is not an uncommon situation. That is why labor “shortages” lead to higher wage rates. A “shortage” is no more quantifiable than a “need,” when you ignore prices, which are crucial in a market economy. To discuss “need” and “shortage” while ignoring prices -- in this case, wages -- is especially remarkable in a usually marketsavvy publication like the Wall Street Journal. Often shortages have been predicted in various occupations -and yet never materialized. Why? Because the pay in those occupations rose, causing more people to go into those occupations and causing employers to reduce how

many people they “need” at the higher pay rates. Virtually every kind of “work that Americans will not do” is in fact work that Americans have done for generations. In many cases, most of the people doing that work today are Americans. And there are certainly many unemployed Americans available today, without bringing in more foreign workers to meet farmers’

“needs.” Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305. His website is www.tsowell.com. Perry The Poacher What you are now hearing across the land is a collective whine. Bluestate Democrats are upset that Texas by Rich Lowry Gov. Rick Perry Syndicated Columnist dares come and play in their sandboxes, and worse, threatens to “poach” jobs from their states. The website Politico reports that Perry’s attempts to lure jobs to Texas are “infuriating to prominent Democrats around the country.” Gov. Jerry Brown of California -- a state that is Perry’s foremost target -- has dismissed Perry’s handiwork in scatological terms. Democrats from another target, Illinois, huff and puff about the temerity of it all. “He better not take our businesses away,” Sen. Dick Durbin

warned. He better not or what, exactly? What recourse does Illinois have, except improving its own business environment? Which would mean Rick Perry is good for Texas ... and for Illinois. Perry is exploiting the genius of our federalist system for all it’s worth. In his business-recruitment trips, accompanied by trash-talking ads and Texassized braggadocio, he is subjecting other states to the fire of competition. In an ad in Crain’s Chicago Business, Perry offered businesses in the state “an escape route to economic freedom ... a route to Texas.” This is exactly how the Founders imagined the interplay among the states working. The George Mason University scholar Michael Greve refers to the system as “competitive” federalism. “This federalism relies on exit and See lowryon 12

Human beings are compelled to categorize just about everything. Joseph Cornell is difficult to categorize while at the same time, he was an expert at categorization. In fact, Cornell had over 150 dossiers of visual information about just about everything. Born in 1903, Joseph Cornell had no formal training or academic art instruction. However, one can never fault an individual who is well read in intellectual arenas. Cornell filled his mind through the vehicle of reading, if not through academic teachings. The result was a body of work that can be described in words such as: surreal, eccentric, and reclusively reminiscent. Cornell came from a working class family. He was painfully shy and lived for many years with his mother and disabled brother. Jobs came and went while Cornell developed his artistic passion. Some of these jobs included appliance salesman, working at a plant nursery, designing textiles and even at one point, working at a defense plant. All the while, Joseph Cornell’s interest in collecting items ranged from French literature to astronomy, ballet and the cinema. All of these lead to the creation of glass covered boxes capturing elegant little worlds like no other artist before him. Although the lion’s share of Cornell’s life was in Flushing, New York, he somehow made his way to Manhattan with his art works in tow. The Julien Levy Gallery represented Cornell and

Untitled (The Hotel Eden) c. 1945 by Joseph Cornell. this led to an auspicious, in my opinion, meeting of the minds with fellow artists. They include the great Marcel Duchamp, the equally great Max Ernst, Salvador Dali and other A List artists of the time. For th e Su rr ea lists, Joseph Cornell represented the juxtaposition of unlike objects so familiar to their group. Cornell found his objects in bookshops and second hand shops around New York. Some of the objects had no value whatsoever until Cornell gave new life to them. Items whose stories were long gone were resurrected in Cornell’s mind through his boxes. Characteristic of Joseph Cornell’s boxes are a stark white background and a glass covering. Some of his most popular assemblages include a portrait of Lauren Bacall, boxes featuring a Medici prince and princess and other esoteric themes including astronomy and the cinema. Putting his passion for

film into practice, Cornell had a public showing of one of his own films but Salvador Dali ridiculed his work, claiming that Cornell had simply put his collage techniques into a film. Cornell was deeply hurt by this and retreated from the cinematic limelight. Today, the works of Cornell are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the Guggenheim Museum of New York. Cornell has also entered cultural lore in such venues as the Mary Chapin Carpenter song, “Ideas are Like Stars,” and the 2006 play titled Hotel Cassiopeia by Charles Mee. Kimberly J. B. administration is ordering them to violate federal law. Think about that: This administration is ordering career law enforcement personnel to break the law. Now, the administration is pushing for an amnesty bill that contains almost nothing to improve immigration enforcement. All that the American citizens will get in return for the amnesty is the promise from the Obama administration that they will try harder to enforce the law. The administration has already shattered that promise, doing exactly the opposite. This is a stark warning to Congress. I sincerely hope that they hear it. Will they listen? Suicidal Republicans have supported illegal alien amnesties dating back to the Reagan era. They have paid a steep, lasting price. As bankrupt, multicultiwracked California goes,

so goes the nation. The progs’ plan has always been to exploit the massive population of illegal aliens to redraw the political map and secure a permanent ruling majority. Now, in the wake of nonstop D.C. corruption eruptions, SchMcGRubio and Company want us to trust them with a thousand new pages of phony triggers, left-wing slush-fund spending and make-believe assimilation gestures. Trust them? Hell, no. There’s only one course for citizens who believe in upholding the Constitution and protecting the American dream: Stop them. recently made Austin, Texas, his first stop on a trip touting job creation, Perry welcomed him with an ad noting, accurately, “Over the last 10 years, Texas created 33 percent of the net new jobs nationwide. Perry’s opponents assume that there must be something unfair or wrong about this. Texas, they scoff, is benefiting from an energy boom. Well, states like California and New York also have oil and gas resources, but refuse

to exploit them fully for political reasons. Regardless, Texas job growth ranges much more widely than the energy sector. Texas benefits from low tax rates, a low cost of living, light regulation, checks on abusive lawsuits and its status as a right-to-work state. California has none of the above. Insolent, Uninformed: Obama Zombies & Other Loons T H I S S A T U R D A Y NIGHT: A peaceful candlelight vigil asking for answers as to why Bengby Niel Young hazi hapAdvocates Columnist pened, and what we are doing about it as a nation? Lou Milanesi (938-5574) is the organizer of this the second gathering of Americans wanting answers. The event is at the state capitol in Concord from 7:30-9. If you wish to be a speaker, give Lou a call. BYOC or we may have one for your participation. ******** I have mentioned “Liberal Lady who has been calling in to my radio program for 16+ years. She likes to remind me that I am out of the mainstream. She calls. She insults me. She will insult my guests. Last week I was reading some quotes from some of the socialist liberal loons who post comments in the NH Union Leader, reacting to a report or opinion editorial. Some of those comments make their way to wezs. com (1350AM) airtime which I have purchased to do my show. “Niel, your responses are strong because you target the issues. Do you notice the Liberals resort to name-calling because their arguments have NO substance? With respect, a fan of WEZS and Niel Young from the San Francisco Bay Area. I have never met Jan and she is not a relative. ******** Poster MICHAEL RALEIGH: “Manchester deserves a real newspaper,

not this fraud. I urge all subscribers to cancel and all advertisers to cancel. Let the paper survive on Legal notices. Just like a Liberal read and post at no cost-then suggest boycotting putting them out of business! ******** TJ ALABRA said: “Niel, I think it’s great you have a hobby and if your posts here are any indication I’ll bet the NH Democratic Party does as well. Congrats, you dominate a medium irrelevant to anyone under 60. When Liberal Lady called in she was asked if she agreed that those of us over 60 are IRRELEVANT. “LL is over 60, and she said yes. Yet she was all aflutter when I informed her that her favorite to be president, Hillary Clinton will be 66 10/26/13. Oh that’s alright she says. Surprise, surprise! Another comment from TJ ALABRA: “LOL. Niel, after 17 years of self-financing you still haven’t figured out there isn’t a market for listening to a dozen old hillbillies pass gas on the radio? After all, how can a concept like Toots from Coots possibly fail to catch fire? You must be the target of your political enemies. There you go again TJ proving you are a disrespectful, mean, and angry person. While you find me to be irrelevant and that I expect from you, but what is your reason for being disrespectful in your comment to those over 60? Rush Limbaugh has a staff to research topics and do show prep. My assistants are paid nothing. Their work happens before, during the program and after. They are listeners who became callers, then because of their loyalty to the mission of

saving our country from Liberal Loons, uniformed voters, Barack Hussein Obama and Obama Zombies they were invited to be phone or in-studio guests, and they are just as valuable as the “big names and they DO KNOW the issues. One of my colleagues provided an interesting list of the Obama administration. So “LL and TJ Alabra, are these Obama appointees following Hillary, irrelevant or “Toots from Coots in your eyes? JOE BIDEN 70, JAMES CLAPPER 72, JOHN KERRY 69, CHUCK HAGEL 66, KATHLEEN SEBELIUS 65, FBI Director ROBERT MUELLER 68, MARTIN DEMPSEY, Military chief of staff 61, CHUCK SCHUMER 62, HARRY REID 73, and NANCY PELOSI 73. EMAILER: “In a perfect world, I would prefer our republican representation to be more conservative. However, I would not be so quick to turn on them. Although Kelly Ayotte has disappointed us lately, how would PAUL HODES have voted? Kelly had used her opposition to ILLEGALS as a campaign pledge. This is a big issue for conservatives, and other America loving citizens. SAME EMAILER: “Rather than being disappointed with our ‘conservative’ representation, we should support them against the greater evil and encourage them to be more conservative. Senators have 6 year terms. They come closer to representing me, in year 6!

pers, the NH State official wildflower, were in full bloom all along the trail and a few were growing in the trail. Before the summit a short spur trail on the right led to an open ledge with nice views to the east. On Cabot’s summit there is an old stone foundation and a view loop over more open ledges. I circled back to the summit and indeed it was a short loop with great views. I continued on until I intersected with the Scudder Trail and then I followed the orange blazes. The trail went down and then went steeply up. As I climbed higher I finally found a nice cool breeze. I felt like I was in the wilderness much more than I do when I am in the so called designated areas. I wondered when the last person visited this mountain. The trail passes over wonderful ledges with stunning views over the Androscoggin River to the Carters, Madison and Washington. Back in the woods I saw more Lady’s Slippers; pink and some were white too. There is no view from Ignall’s wooded summit. I took my solo photo be-

I didn’t see a soul all day and if I had I bet they might have asked, “Is it hot enough for ya? neath the summit sign and decided to continue over a tenth of mile down to see Ray’s Pond, an isolated small mountain tarn. Man oh man, screams from above directed at me by a not so happy hawk made me think I must have interrupted his fishing or maybe mama had a nest close by so I didn’t stick around any longer than it took to snap two photos of the tiny pond. I admired the vast view from Ignall’s ledges while I ate my sandwich and enjoyed the refreshing breeze before I retraced my way and then continued down the Scudder Trail. The trail is mostly an old road and

is clear and wide. Unfortunately moose like this grassy path and where the moose roam wood ticks play. Several times I had to remove these stubborn pests under my pants from my ankles to my knees. Ticks were the reason I wore pants on this hot day but it didn’t seem to deter them. Maybe best to leave this trail for fall hiking. Near the bottom I took a left turn onto the Yellow Trail and followed it back to the Blue Trail. Straight across I saw another tiny sign pointing to Wiggins Rock. So I followed it up the old logging road and past an enormous rocky ledge and then the See patenaude on 15

Since I now found myself on the White Trail I decided I probably should go out and back to the Crow’s Nest. You would have thought I’d had had enough fun with the ticks but I followed the old road that went up gradually until only a short steep pitch was left to reach the top. Red Pines covered the

I was happy to get back to my car and I quenched my thirst with the bottle of water I had left in the car. I changed my clothes and I found a few more wood ticks creepy crawling on me. I think I hiked a total of nine miles and I had a lovely hot day. Have Fun!

RIdgewood Country Club Golf Outing In Memory of Michael Morgan Ridgewood Country Club will be hosting a Celebration of life golf outing in memory of coowner Michael J. Morgan on June 28th. They invite everyone who knew Michael to join in for a fun filled day of golf. The Morgan family has worked hard to keep this event as fun as possible. For this reason they encourage both experienced golfers and first time players to participate. Though there will not be scoring, the Celebration of Life outing will encompass many games and contests throughout the course, including Mike’s infamous marshmallow contest (a variation of the longest drive competition). They will also be holding a 50/50 putting contest with 50% of the cash proceeds going to the contest winner and 50% being donated to charity. The cost for golf with cart and lunch is $75. Lunch only is $25. Ridgewood Country Club and the Morgan family will be donating 100% of the proceeds from golf to several area youth sports leagues. Over the next few months a memorial garden for Mike will be planted between the 11th and 14th holes at Ridgewood Country Club. Chris Maroun and his team at Miracle Farms have generously created and will plant the memorial garden in Mike’s honor. Anyone interested in making a donation toward the memorial garden can drop off a check, made payable to Miracle Farms, in the pro shop. A sketch of the garden is available for your review in the pro

seum.” Lavertue passed away in 2007. In 2004 after installing sewer and water lines, tearing down some existing buildings and renovating the inside of the existing main building and much expense, the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum was finally opened. Over the years, the Historical Society had planned to tear down the barn attached to the museum building and construct a brand new building for presentations. “It was an ambitious project,” said Smith. “The cost was a bit prohibitive so we finally decided to move ahead by just renovating the barn.” During the summer months of 2011 and 2012, renovations of the barn were done in accordance to what the society’s treasury could stand. Among those renovations have been a new roof,

concrete footing and a concrete floor. New siding has also been put on around most of the entire museum and barn. The renovation has been managed by Don Pintacura and Gary Cleveland who are, as this goes to press, putting up Shiplap rough sawn siding to complete the barn project. Already this year, JW Electric has been outfitting the barn with an extensive electrical system that will bring lighting to all areas of the barn as well as preparing it for a new audiovisual installment by Home Theater Experts. The entire barn has been insulated by Howland Home Improvement. When all is said and done, the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society has invested tens of thousands of dollars in renovation of the property and buildings over the last fourteen years. DEAR TIM: I had a contractor come out to increase the size of a parking area next to my driveway. He just dumped smaller gravel, the size of golf balls, onto the grass. This gravel did have some smaller crushed stone and sand mixed in. Then he rolled over it with his backhoe saying all would be fine. Is this the right way to add gravel to make a driveway extension? I ask because my existing driveway has larger stones the size of softballs as the base. --John O., Southern Ontario, Canada DEAR JOHN: The contractor you hired did the wrong thing. It sounds like a classic dump and run scam. He rushes out with a dump truck or two, unloads the gravel, spreads it out, drives over it and cashes your check. There’s a remote chance his work may stand up to moderate truck traffic, but only in very dry conditions. Road building, and driveways are just small roads, was perfected thousands of years ago. The Romans knew how to build roads that have stood the test of time, and many of their roads still exist today. To get lasting results, just mimic what they did. Here’s an analogy to help explain why your contractor’s work is going to fail. If you try to drive a heavy truck onto sand, there’s a very good chance the truck will get stuck. This is especially true if the sand is composed of tiny rounded pieces of rock. Some sand is made from angular pieces of rock or sea shells, and you can drive on it with some success. At the other extreme is driving on solid bedrock.

This gravel base was dumped directly onto grass. That’s not acceptable. You can drive an Abrams M1A1 battle tank that weighs more than 62 tons and the rock will not sink. The Romans figured this out, but their chariots didn’t weigh 62 tons! As you dig into regular soil, you’ll discover that it’s usually pretty easy to cut into the top layer, often referred to as the A profile. This top soil is fluffy, it’s got organic material in it and insects help aerate the soil. This is why rain water soaks into top soil readily. Topsoil is very weak. It can’t support very much weight. But as you go deeper into soil, it contains less air, and it becomes more compact. This is why you’re able to build buildings on the subsoils that are deeper in the ground. Some subsoils can support tremendous amounts of weight depending on the makeup of the soil. Knowing this, your contractor should have come out and excavated out all of the top soil where the new gravel was to be placed. He should have then used a compacting roller to compress and compact the disturbed subsoil. I feel he should have then installed a layer of geotextile fabric. This is newer technology that helps keep mud from fouling the base layers of gravel roadbeds. If mud seeps up into a gravel

roadbed -- and it does when heavy vehicles pass over the road -- the mud lubricates the interlocking pieces of gravel making the roadbed lose strength. Once the geotextile fabric is spread out, you then place the softball-sized angular stones on top of it. I would put in at least a 6- to 8-inch layer of this stone. This stone is made from See builder on 28

bedrock. It’s important that these stones are very angular so they interlock with one another. Never use rounded rocks of any size for the gravel roadbed. The rounded stones don’t interlock, and they move around like ball bearings when driven upon. After the 6-inch layer of stone is installed, use a

roller compactor to get the stones to interlock as much as possible. This layer of stone is your simulated bedrock, and it’s the foundation of your new driveway. You then start to add layers of more crushed stone or rock, but the size of the stones gets progressively smaller as you get closer to the surface. Add about 4 inches per level and com-

he spoke about was the TAXPAYER and they will be part of this process. Common Core may have been implemented by four votes in our APPOINTED NH Board of Education, but citizens are now paying attention. My response that we need to “stop that train and send it back” did not elicit any comment. The truth is Common Core has a VERY high price tag to the taxpayer, offering little except a government mandated education in return. The so-called “rigorous standards” (what does that mean, anyway?) are being disputed at every turn with even the National Education Association, the nation’s largest teachers’ union, coming out in favor of a two-year moratorium on adverse consequences for schools and teachers.

We’ve Been Selling The Lakes Region For Over 40 Years!

There has been NO FISCAL ANALYSIS on the cost of implementing Common Core in our NH schools. There is no fiscal note for SB 48 which, because of the required Common Core high stakes testing, estimates the cost at $404 per pupil per year for the first seven years. This unfunded mandate will be downshifted to the taxpayers. And none of this covers the DATA MINING in Common Core which shares private student information without parental consent. Senator Stiles, District 24, was in attendance at this meeting and spoke indirectly about SB82 which enables a commission to study competency based education and its funding. This bill has been retained by the House Education Committee. Senator Stiles asked the BOE to bypass

T

the legislature and directly appoint this commission. Chair Raffio responded the board would discuss this possibility during their summer planning retreat. But, we need to ask why a NH State Senator - a member of the legislature - would ask the NH BOE to bypass the NH Legislature? Citizens have been kept completely out of the process of Common Core and its implementation. This is just wrong on all levels. Perhaps we need to ask Senator Stiles why she feels the need to make such a recommendation? In the meantime, you can find out what YOU can do to become part of this debate. Check out www.stopcommoncore.com. And help us STOP that runaway freight train which is currently plowing full steam ahead!

NH Boat Museum’s Back Bay Skippers to Host Prestigious National Model Sail Boating Regatta WOLFEBORO - Top sailors from the United States and Canada will rendezvous in Wolfeboro June 2223 when the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Back Bay Skippers host this year’s The American Model Yachting Association One-Meter Soling National Championship Regatta. This prestigious national event will feature two days of radio-controlled sailing competition on Back Bay with contenders from as far away as Toronto, Michigan, California and Florida positioned along Bridge-Falls Path, transmitters in hand. No admission is charged for the public to watch the races, which run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 10am-2pm. Sunday, followed by awards to the top five finishers. The One-Meter Solings to be sailed in this prestigious rivalry are miniature versions of an Olympicclass Norwegian sailboat. Sailors can move their rudder and sails by remote control, but it is the wind that actually propels the boat. Skill at catching and using that wind, as well as tactical ability, mean the difference between first and last place.
