The Declaration of Independence And The Men Who Signed It

Mrs. Wolf, my eightgrade history teacher in a Boston Public School, ensured that her students not only knew the reasons why the 13 colonies united against Great Britain, and declared their independence from Great Britain but had her students memorize a good portion of the Declaration by Hal Shurtleff Director, Camp Constitution Alton, NH

of Independence. They also had to know about the men who signed what could have been their death warrant if they were unsuccessful, and the sacrifices they made. As a means of honoring the memory of those brave men and my beloved history teacher, I felt that I had an obligation to share this information. Over the years, I would help man information tables on the

Boston Common with a sign that reads “Honoring the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. How Many Can You Name?’ (This year my table will be in Alton, NH.) Many of the people who stopped by our table were in town to attend the Boston Pops annual concert which would end with an incredible fireworks display. Few of them could See SHURTLEFF on 32

Now Is The Time To The Editor: Ask anyone who the greatest mass-murderer of all time was, and they will inevitably and instantly reply: “Adolf Hitler!” Everyone knows that Hitler stands accused of the mass-murder of 6 Million Jews—but, almost no one knows the full extent of the HORRORS of which the Communist dictators of the 20th Century are guilty. The Black Book Of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression, by Stephane Courtois, et al. (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard Univ. Press, 1999) -supposedly the most authoritative source on the subject - claims that the Communist dictators of the 20th Century were responsible for the deaths of an estimated 85-100 Million People. As my re¬search clearly shows, this is a Gross under-estimate of the number of people Murdered by Communist dictators. If one compares and contrasts the published works of Viktor Suvorov with those of Alexander Yakovlev—who have written books too numerous to list here—then one will clearly see that the death toll accumulated by Communist dictators is Much greater than that claimed by Courtois, et al. Who are Viktor Suvorov and Alexander Yakovlev? Viktor Suvorov is the pen name of Victor Rezhun—a courageous Defector from the Soviet GRU(Military Intelligence); as a Lieutenant Colonel of Military Intelligence, Suvorov/Rezhun had had ac-

cess to the Top Secret Soviet GRU Archives in Moscow—and, hence, access to information of which few people ever dreamed. Alexander Yakovlev was an advisor to Mikhail Gorbachev— who, likewise, had had access to Top Secret information of which few people ever dreamed. And, according to Yakovlev, Gorbachev was Not the “moderate” that has been portrayed, first by the newsmedia, and then by recent historians; rather, Gorbachev HATED Ronald Reagan with such an intensity that Gorbachev wanted to Nuke the United States - something which, Yakovlev claims, he was only able to dissuade Gorbachev from doing by getting into a heated shouting match with him. By comparing and contrasting the published works of Viktor Suvorov with those of Alexander Yakovlev, I learned that just the “Big Three” Communist dictators of the 20th Century were responsible for the following: • Vladimir Lenin: was responsible for the mass-murder of 24-30 Million People - to include 6 Million Jews, and 30,000 Rabbis... which is rendered all the more incomprehensible by virtue of the fact that Lenin’s own grandfather was a Jewish doctor. • Josef Stalin: was responsible for the mass-murder of 100 Million People. • Mao Tse Tung (by which name he was known during his lifetime): was responsible for the mass-murder of 65-75 Million

People—and another 65-75 Million People who “mysteriously disappeared” into the Chinese Communist (ChiCom) Concentration Camp System, and who were never seen or heard from again, for a total of 130-150 Million People. •For a grand total—from just the “Big Three” Communist dictators of the 20th Century—of 189-280 Million People. So, insofar as “Socialism is Not an end, but a Means to an end, and that end is world-wide, ever-lasting Communism”, it should be noted and clearly understood that the “Democratic” Socialists have set America on a course that will eventually and inevitably result in Death To All Who Oppose Them—And Perpetual Slavery For Everyone Else. Therefore, Now is the time— Before the “Democratic” Socialists abolish the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights (which they Must do in order to institute a Socialist dictatorship, preparatory to a Communist one)—for people to stand up and Demand their God-given Rights. Two letters written in July of the year 1924 gave me just a glimpse of how my Dad celebrated Independence Day in that year. The first letter was from my Dad’s sister, Theda, to their brother, Robert. The second was also addressed to Robert and signed “Gramps,” which was Dad’s nickname, though he was only about 17 and ½ years old at the time and a recent graduate of the New Hampton Literary Institution. Robert was living in Lewiston, Maine, where he attended Bates College and worked for the Lewiston Sun newspaper. His sister, Theda, told him that she wished he could have been with the family for their get-together on the fourth. She told him that there were 26 relatives with the Torsey family (she was married to Leon Torsey) which included her family (the Bradley Smith’s) and other relatives. My Dad revealed in his letter that they met

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Working Through The Pain Brendan is of this week traveling for a family get together. We asked him to carefully consider and select an older column to run on this page. by Brendan Smith Thirty seconds Weirs Times Editor later this one from August of 2014 was emailed to us. Every week, no matter what the conditions might be, this column must get done. Sure, most people take it for granted that when they open to this page every week there will be my smiling face looking back at them with somewhere between seven and eight hundred words filling in the rest of the space. Still, if for some reason, this column suddenly did not appear, would anyone really care? Would I even be missed? Would I be the topics of any conversations or would my name just float off in the wind. Well, this was almost put to the test last week. It was while sitting here typing another one of my amazingly witty and occasionally self-serving columns when my right index finger was caught, just for a moment, between the “L” and “O” keys. I let out a small scream which brought my wife running in from the living room. “What happened?” she asked. “I think I bruised my nail,” I said, trying hard to hold back a small teardrop. I’d suffered much worse over the years and I knew couldn’t let this moment overtake me. I got up and walked from the table and headed towards the bathroom under my own power. The finger didn’t look too bad but I knew that, since I was really a hunt and peck typer, that this injury, if it proved to

be worse, might put me out of the writing game for awhile, if not forever. While in the bathroom I was also thinking about what I’d tell my wife when I came out. How would I break the news to her that there might not be a column this week, that a valuable source of our income might be in danger? I took a deep breath and opened the door to face the music. “You okay?” she asked from the living room where she had returned to her own projects. “I’m fine,” I lied. I had gotten a small reprieve from the inevitable truth. I sat down to contemplate my future and turned on the TV for some distraction. The reporter on the news channel looked very agitate. What had I missed? Was there a terrible plane crash? A bombing in the Middle East? An asteroid heading towards Earth? I turned up the volume to hear better. Once the on-air confusion had calmed down, I finally got the story. Tom Brady fell down and bumped his knee. It was on every channel and even the national news. It was, for the moment bigger than the Beghazi story, the IRS scandal and the NRS spying combined. The story soon turned into speculation and guessing, like most news stories, and soon everyone was wondering what would happen. Would this be the end of Brady’s career? Who would replace him if it was? One reporter even touched on the fact that Brady himself might not ever have gotten the chance to be as successful as he is if he hadn’t gotten an opportunity after another quarterback’s injury so many years ago. As I watched the blurry video of Brady falling down for the

entral Baptist hurch

10,000th time, it made me think. How many people really remember the name of that quarterback he replaced? Even though the guy had a good career, it was pretty much forgotten once this new kid came on the scene. There’s always someone waiting in the wings to take your place. I looked at my index finger. It looked fine but it throbbed. I didn’t have the luxury of a Tom Brady to have a score of team physicians look it over, maybe rushed to the hospital for an index finger MRI. I did, though, have that same feeling that I’m sure Brady had. What if I show I can’t do this anymore, what if I sit down to that laptop and the pain keeps me from putting together even one coherent sentence? Just like some young gunslinger waiting on the Patriots’ sideline, I know there’s some young, creative writer out there, someone who hasn’t suffered the pain of a bruised index, someone who is more than willing to see their own face on this page; their own seven to eight hundred words. I realized I couldn’t afford to let the injury make me miss a week, sending out signals to those waiting for me to go down. I took a deep breath, got out of the chair and returned to my laptop. I worked through the pain to get this column done. When my wife came in to ask how my finger was, I forced a smile. “Its fine,” I lied. I didn’t want her to worry. Brendan is also the author of “The Flatlander Chronicles” and “Best Of A F.O.O.L. In New Hampshire” available at BrendanTSmith.com. Hie news book “I Really Only Did It For The Socks - Stories & Thoughts On Aging” will be released this summer.

Blowing the Lid Off Probate Predators There is a silent epidemic in this country claiming the lives and property of untold numbers of innocent elderly and disabled Americans. It has nothing to do with exotic viruses. In fact, it’s a homegrown phenomenon involving corrupt elected officials, judges and lawyers. The deadly disease running rampant in our court system is probate and guardianship by Michelle Malkin abuse. This week, the granddaughter of the late Syndicated Columnist iconic singer and songwriter Nina Simone blew the whistle on Vice President Kamala Harris’ alleged role in a scheme where the entertainer’s estate “was taken away from us” after she died in France in 2003. The battle stretched out over 15 years and was reportedly helmed by Harris while she served as California’s attorney general between 2011-2017. In a two-part series of shocking tweets, ReAnna Simone Kelly laid out her family’s claims about how Harris “threatened my mother Lisa Simone with jail time before the case was underway if my mom didn’t resign as the Administrator and Trustee of the estate.” Simone Kelly alleged that Harris, who had no legal jurisdiction over Simone’s estate overseas, “put out stories about funds being misappropriated which of course, turned out to be totally false as the money she was talking about was used to pay attorneys, accountants and to protect and run the estate.” Eventually, the granddaughter recounted, “the law firm that we initially sued for wrongfully filing the estate in the US probate system, in the end, wound up settling with us for a few million dollars.” Simone Kelly wants answers and is urging people in power (that includes you, fellow journalists!) to “ask Kamala Harris why she came for my family ... Ask her why she separated my family ... Ask her why we as her family no longer own the rights to anything. Ask her why she bullied my mother in court and my mom almost killed herself from the depression.” If this all sounds bewildering and unimaginable, you haven’t been paying attention. Across the country, judges, prosecutors and other legal cronies have been entangled in nightmare cases involving elderly and disabled citizens who’ve been stripped of their homes, physically and mentally abused, defrauded and often left to die, according to their families. “All across America,” California nurse and activist Patricia Lacy told me, “vulnerable elders are being placed under fraudulent guardian and conservatorships in an effort to obtain a senior’s life savings, property and removal of all their civil rights. They are not even allowed to hire See MALKIN on 36

The Movement Against Critical Race Theory Is Deeply Necessary According to the establishment media, critical race theory, or CRT, is a distraction. It is a right-wing smear. It is a conservative attempt to quash the dark side of American history. Most of all, accordby Ben Shapiro Syndicated Columnist ing to the establishment media, you must never -- ever -- pay attention to the infusion of CRT into the nation’s institutions of power. According to MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, controversy over CRT is a “creation ... It keeps people watching or it keeps people clicking.” According to CNN’s Bakari Sellers, CRT is just “America’s history.” According to The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart, those who criticize CRT are merely attempting to prevent “us from learning our history.” Critical race theory, of course, is not America’s actual history. It is a perverse worldview, unsupportable by the evidence, in which all of America’s key institutions are inextricably rooted in white supremacy; it is an activist campaign demanding the destruction of those institutions. The founders of CRT have written as much. According to CRT founders Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, CRT is founded on two key premises: that “racism is ordinary, not aberrational -- ‘normal science,’ the usual way society does business, the common, everyday experience of most people of color in this country”; second, that “our system of white-overcolor ascendancy serves important purposes, both psychic and material.” This means, according to Delgado and Stefancic, that “racism is difficult to cure or address” and that a formal com-

mitment to legal equality on the basis of color-blindness is merely a guise for further discrimination. Furthermore, CRT founders say that whites are unable to understand racism, and that “minority status ... brings with it a presumed competence to speak about race and racism.” CRT therefore holds that racism is embedded deeply in American life, unconsciously into white American psyches, and that it is impossible for white Americans to understand their own racism or that of the system, let alone to remove it. The only solution: tearing away the only systems that have ever provided widespread liberty and prosperity. As fellow CRT founder Derrick Bell wrote, “The whole liberal worldview of private rights and public sovereignty mediated by the rule of law needed to be exploded.” CRT isn’t merely a tool of legal analysis, either, as many of its dishonest defenders claim. Delgado and Stefancic are clear: “Although CRT began as a movement in the law, it has rapidly spread beyond that discipline. Today, many in the field of education consider themselves critical race theorists ... Political scientists ponder voting strategies coined by critical race theorists ... Unlike some academic disciplines, critical race theory contains an activist dimension.” So, what has CRT accomplished? The near-complete subjugation of our higher educational system, which now traffics regularly in CRT-related theories; the corruption of our establishment media, who parrot the anti-Americanism of CRT as “just history”; the infusion of CRT into nearly every area of the government, under the Biden-esque Newspeak of “equity.” And yet, if Americans notice See SHAPIRO on 35

Capitalism Makes Us Better Off Last week, I debunked three myths about capitalism. Here are four more: Myth No. 4: Capitalism creates unsafe workspaces. “Greedy capiby John Stossel talists” will risk Syndicated Columnist workers’ lives to increase production if government, through agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, doesn’t stop that. It’s logical to assume that government regulation saves lives. Workplace deaths dropped after the OSHA

was created. Government officials like showing a graph of the decline. But if you bother to also look at data from before the OSHA’s creation, you see that deaths fell at the same rate before regulation began! Why? “As we become richer, we become safer,” says Dan Mitchell of the Center for Freedom and Prosperity. Wealth created by capitalism lets us afford safety devices and build machines to do dangerous work. The OSHA is like someone jumping in front of a parade and claiming he led the parade. “We need more capitalism because when people get rich, they can afford

more safety!” adds Mitchell. Myth No. 5: “Unfettered” capitalism created evil “robber barons” who got rich by “exploiting” workers and consumers. It’s true that more than 100 years ago, a few entrepreneurs, such as John D. Rockefeller, amassed a huge amount of wealth. But Rockefeller was neither robber nor baron. He was not born rich, and he didn’t rob. He got rich by offering consumers better deals. Rockefeller developed ways to deliver oil for less. He won customers by lowering the price of kerosene from 26 cents per gallon to about 6 cents.

For the first time, average people could afford fuel for lanterns so they could read after dark. Rockefeller may have even “saved the whales” by making oil so cheap that killing whales to get whale oil was no longer practical. His competitors hated him for cutting prices. It was they who convinced the gullible media to call Rockefeller and other entrepreneurs “robber barons.” Cornelius Vanderbilt was also born poor. At age 11, he quit school to work on boats. Then he invented ways to make travel cheaper. He cut the New YorkSee STOSSEL on 34

Afghan War Clouds Gather as U.S. Prepares Final Pullout Dark clouds are shadowing Afghanistan as the final pullout of American forces from the beleaguered war torn country continby John J. Metzler ues and the fuSyndicated Columnist ture darkens with the likely approach of a militant Taliban regime. Time is running out to “prevent a worst case scenario” as Deborah Lyons, the UN’s Special Representative told a Security Council briefing in which she warned that the “possible slide toward dire scenarios is undeniable.” Observers are “alarmed at the lack of political unity” in the country which somehow must be ad-dressed

or risk contributing to further Taliban territorial advances. Representative Lyons stressed that through its intensified military campaign, the Taliban has captured more than 50 of Afghanistan’s 370 districts since the start of May. She added, “Most districts that have been taken surround provincial capitals, suggesting that the Taliban are positioning themselves to try and take these capitals once foreign forces are fully withdrawn.” Ms. Lyons added that “increased and prolonged violence” threatened to destroy much of what has been built and hard won over the past twenty years. Yes, that twenty years has been a tough and harrowing time. And now for naught? Schools, hospitals and improved opportunities for women could be

threatened by the Taliban’s religious and social intolerance. Prior to 2001, the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban ruled Afghanistan; the regime offered safe haven for the Al Qaida and Bin Laden terrorist networks which attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. Shortly thereafter American forces toppled the Taliban regime, but U.S. and NATO forces had maintained a sizable and costly troop commitment ever since. Sadly Afghanistan was at war before the U.S. entered the conflict and shall likely remain so after we leave, possibly descending into a wrenching civil conflict. Recently President Joe Biden met with Afghan leader Ghani in Washington, “Our troops may be leaving, but support for Afghanistan is not

ending,” Joe Biden said. The President sought to re-assure the Afghan leader with $266 million in humanitarian assistance and $3.3 billion in security aid. This is all part of a depressing droning by Washington to dump more dollars into the Afghan money pit with the hope of a better outcome. But despite official Washington’s wistful political platitudes about holding firm and supporting Afghanistan after the troop pullouts, the fact remains that the psychological pendulum has al-ready shifted to a future Taliban regime. It’s not If but When. This is not America’s fault, nor longer its mission, but an accumulated outcome of this South Asian country’s military dependence on foreign forces to do See METZLER on 35

BIRDS For The

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Trees: Sentinels of The Woods by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

Every tree tells a story, even the dead ones. In fact, the dead ones may have the most interesting stories to tell. A recent walk through the woods had me thinking about the trees. These particular woods were a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees — predominantly deciduous, but a few evergreens sprinkled in as well. A large ash tree was snapped about 12 feet from the ground. The otherwise healthy-looking trunk stood tall and straight, while the rest of the tree bent down into the forest at a 45-degree angle. I’m pretty sure I know what happened to the tree. A severe wind storm, with spotty tornado touch downs, blew through the area last summer and reduced many trees to tall trunks. It’s funny how storms impact trees differently. Some storms uproot most of the trees they damage. Other storms snap them like twigs. Still other storms, it seems, hardly damage the trees at all. If the snapped trees were in someone’s yard, they would be chainsawed into 100 pieces and carted away. In the woods, they just stay that way until nature brings the snapped top

portion crashing to the ground. Then, the trunk stands erect to rot and what was formerly the top of the tree rests on the ground to rot as well. Its function as a tree changes dramatically. No longer are they sucking up carbon dioxide and giving oxygen in return. No longer are they producing leaves, which provide shade and shelter for the woods’ creatures. Even dead, however, the pieces of the onceproud tree provide many functions for the woods and their usefulness is still profound. The long

top of the tree will rot and feed the soil so that the woods can grow more trees and other plants. It will provide homes for ground mammals and insects — lots of insects. Those bugs will become food for birds and other creatures. The trunk, now reduced to a stub in the woods, will also provide food and shelter for birds, squirrels, and insects. The numerous holes in the trunk provide evidence of their vital job. As I pondered the usefulness of trees, alive and dead, I was struck by just how many there are in the woods. Uncountable

numbers. It’s rare that I pay so much attention to trees. Paradoxically, they are so numerous that we hardly notice them. I stopped to look at a swamp and dozens of dead tree trunks of varying sizes stood tall like so many gray fingers pointing to the sky. The cattails and other swamp vegetation were dwarfed by the trunks. Redwinged blackbirds, grackles and swallows flew about the swamp and perched on the tops of these fingers. In Their Own Words, tells the story of the African-American pilots who fought to protect the skies during WWII. Complete with personal interviews with 20 of the original Airmen, rare photos, and computer-generated recreations, this film chronicles the Airmen’s story from the rocky 1941 start, to the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.

Lecture by Dr. Giovanni Frisone In September 1943, when an armistice was signed with the Allies, Italian soldiers thought the war had ended for them. Instead, they were arrested by the Germans and given a choice: continue fighting under Fascist or Nazi command or be taken to a German prison camp. An estimated 650,000 Italian soldiers chose prison camp. Ferruccio Francesco Frisone was one of those soldiers, and his story will be told by his son in this unique presentation.

Entire swaths of U.S. cities engulfed in racial conflagrations; workers striking by the millions; women demonstrating in the streets demanding the right to vote; immigrants harassed and deported; dissenters and “hyphenated” Americans pursued, surveilled, jailed, or lynched; and violent disagreements about the nature of civil liberties. The exhibition is visually dynamic, with large-scale photographs, moving images, multimedia environments, and re-created settings such as a movie theater. Letters From God This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

therefore you don’t have life in yourself. You can only live if you remain dependent on me. You can only remain dependent on me if you remain as I created you, without even one sin or act of disobedience. Can you imagine how unloving you would be if, as you were having your own children, you programed them so that they, like a machine, had to obey you. They would have no choice. You would not love them by doing this, it would be an act of hate. But you would risk, however, that they would one day rebel against you and suffer greatly as a result. Since Adam and Eve, all of you have made that choice and that is why evil and death reign among you. “The wages of sin is death...” (Romans 6:23). Not only are you dying but Nations die and even the glorious World I created will die as well. Your Nation is in death throes as I write. Last week, I wrote that you are coming apart because you, like former Nations have prospered by my hand but now are forsaking me. The World you live in has had the light of the good news of life after death proclaimed to them, but Nation after Nation have grown dark by rejecting me and practicing things that bring death. I have promised you that I would come to you twice. Once by sending my Son, Jesus the Messiah, to live

among you and then to die so that because He is eternal and sinless, he could pay the penalty for your sin. He was as an innocent Lamb sacrificing his eternal life for you to be forgiven. I also promised that I will return when my Son comes in glory to stop the mayhem brought on by human selfishness, greed and lust for power which are the byproducts of the evil within each of you. When he comes, it will not be as a suffering Lamb but as a reigning King of Kings to put an end to sin and human history which has proliferated evil and death. I will thereafter create a new heaven and earth which will be without sin, evil or death populated only by those who chose to return to me, receive forgiveness and remain dependent so that I could continue to pass my life into each of them. Because I love you, every ending of death can once again be a beginning of life, if you come back to me and seek forgiveness and desire to be dependent on me again. I have made a provision to cure death. The wages of sin, turning away from me and doing things that rob you of life, does bring death, but I can give you eternal life if you will choose me again. The final words of the passage from my book, The Bible, stated above says “The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life.”

Letters From God

QUESTION: Why, if you are eternal and good have you allowed death and evil to exist? Why do we all die? Can’t you do something about it? `I have written before, in these letters, and made it very clear in my book, The Bible, that I am eternal, and I have no evil in me. I also created you like me, good, without any evil and eternal, when I created the first humans, Adam & Eve. Genesis 1:31 says: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” After creation there was nothing dying and no evil. I warned them, however, that they would remain in this condition only if they obeyed me. I did this by giving them everything but one tree and its fruit. By doing this I not only showed my goodness and kindness to bestow on them all the riches of the world I created as a gift, I also gave them the opportunity for them to choose. In other words, I loved them enough to allow them to choose to not love me and to remain dependent on me for life and with that, the opportunity to experience death and evil (Genesis 2:17). I am eternal but each of you were made, and

I can and will breathe life that will last for eternity into you, into your Nation and any other Nation that chooses to return to me. I will create a new Heaven and Earth that will only experience life in all its fullness forever, without death, just as I promised. The question is, will you be there to enjoy my love and gracious gifts that I long to bestow on you. I see one of my shepherd Pastors is going to make this theme the topic of an Outdoor Summer Worship experience in Alton Bay. Go, join this worship experience if you would like to know more and be sure that you will one day be with me. Oh, how I long to have my children back and show them my love and life. God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

There is good karma and bad karma. And the good version manifested itself in spectacular fashion at golf’s recent U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course near San Diego. Fiery Spaniard Jon Rahm made pressurepacked birdie putts on the final two holes for a one stroke win in the 120th version of this Major golf classic. What made this an especially compelling triumph is the fact that Rahm was in the top form of his career when he earlier was forced to withdraw from the Memorial Golf Tournament at Muirfield Village due to a positive coronavirus test. At the time he had a six-stroke lead after 54 holes. An all-but sure victory was snatched from Rahm due to dubious COVID protocols. A subsequent quarantine hampered his U.S. Open prep, but Rahm pulled it off, triumphing over COVID, the dubious protocols, and Louis Oosthuizen—by that one stroke. Rahm’s game was hot and he didn’t let the unfortunate post-Muirfield isolation cool him off. Karma The good karma. And it was wonderful to behold. John Rahm. I’ll refer to as MV inviting me to play golf. He even offered to travel to Loudon Country Club to play. As I live next to LCC, it was an offer I could not refuse. MV even set up a 9:30 a.m. tee-time. So I showed up at LCC shortly after 9 a.m. and rented a golf cart and loaded my clubs onto it. I was feeling a bit poorly, after having enjoyed a robust “social event” the previous evening. I’d skipped breakfast but looked forward to hitting the links and enjoying, as much as possible, a bright sunny day featuring 90 degree temps. MV pulled into the parking lot and I drove the cart over to load his clubs. But MV’s next words stunned me. “Oh, I never ride,” explained the 72-yearold lawmaker. “I always walk. But you go ahead and ride if you want to.” This put me into a quandary. I was in no way prepared, physically or emotionally, to drag a big handcart for five hours up and down hills under a hot sun

in humid, 90 degree temps. I also knew MV was an Air Force veteran, and as a former Marine Corps infantry officer there was no way my pride would allow me to ride while MV walked. I desperately wished I’d eaten something. I exchanged the motorized cart for a handdrawn pull cart and bought several bottles of water and PowerAid. After the first hole I was awash in sweat, the perspiration literally dripping off me. But MV seemed fresh and unfazed. Could I complete 17 more holes? I hydrated as much as possibly and secretly was pleased when I had to hit from the shade. I kept swinging away and putting one foot in front of the other, hoping that this round of golf wouldn’t kill me. I envisioned morbid headlines. Customer Service As A Fishing Guide they will be miserable. They won’t be able to enjoy even the best fishing. Comfort doesn’t end there though. Top quality gear functions better and is more enjoyable to use, and therefore anglers don’t have to work as hard as they would when using low quality gear. For instance, a cheap department store rod and reel is going to be heavier, less sensitive, and have a reel that isn’t as smooth. The result is everything an angler does with it will be more difficult. Even if it is only slightly more difficult, it adds up over the course of an entire day. After a guided trip there is one thing that every client does…they talk. If it was a good trip, they tell everyone interested, and some who aren’t, all about it. They See MOORE on 26

It is the opinion of many that customer service is the backbone of any reputable business which deals with the public. There are many companies in the fishing industry that are well known for having excellent customer service, but you don’t always hear about it in reference to fishing guides. In fact, there are many customers loyal to many brands for their level of customer service alone. Being a fishing guide is no different. As a guide, good customer service is often the difference between a client returning, or not. I get emails all the time asking for tips on being a good guide and thought I would share a couple things I have learned through the years. The most important thing is to treat every client like a human being. By that I mean treat them with respect. If a client feels even the slightest bit disrespected, they will never come fishing with me again. This means not being overly critical of a guest’s angling abilities. Many people hire a guide to learn something, not to be made to feel inferior. I don’t want to seem like I’m talking down to my guests, but I also shouldn’t assume they already know everything about the species we are after that day.

Great North Aleworks - Vista Wit

by Jim MacMillan Contributing Writer

While working for an international company 15 or more years ago, I had multiple opportunities to travel to the Brussels office in Belgium. Site seeing and restaurants after work were some of my favorite highlights. And I grew to really appreciate Belgian-style beers. They were unique, flavorful as there were a plentiful variety of locally brewed offerings. Sometimes malty or slightly sweet, but always original, Belgians captured my heart. Today, we can find Bel-

gian-style beers from importers and many offerings from breweries on this side of the big pond. One such brewer is our focus beer this week from our friends at Great North Aleworks. Great North Aleworks is a 20 barrel brewery located in Manchester, NH and owned by Rob and Lisa North, both from Canada (aka Great White North). They both have had many high-score homebrewing achievements. During 2013, Rob worked at Newburyport Brewing in Rhode Island

while they made their plans and finally decided to open their own brewery in 2014. With a dedication to flavor and purity, Great North is making their efforts known quickly around New Hampshire. Besides their amazing and varied Hazy Rotation IPA series, look for their Amber Lager and Robust Vanilla Porter. You can find these in 16 oz 4 pks cans, rent 1/2 barrel or 1/6 barrel kegs, and get growlers at their Holt Ave, Manchester brewery. Visit them at or their website at www.great-

BOSAK from 9 ly hatched birds gave away the nest of a tree swallow. The parents dutifully and exhaustingly brought food to the youngsters. Trees, dead and alive, define the woods. They do not move about, but rather stand guard and act as sentinels to protect their part of the mysterious world we call the woods. All the while, they provide essential resources to its own plant kingdom and unselfishly give the same to the animal kingdom.

so grand, although it had cost over $125.” So the little community of Pike celebrated the birth of our country in a big way with an attendance estimated to be at over 1,000 people, with many traditional activities, the most popular of such to this day probably being the parade.

One of my boyhood memories which occurs on or around “the fourth” is that of picking wild strawberries and having my Mother use them to make strawberry shortcake. horse, Rex, holding a flag, would set the mood of cheerfulness and enthusiasm for the day. And the people did come to Pike on that day. A large number of people came on the trains, one at 8:59am And the other at 10:30am. Many others arrived by carriage at various times during the day. As the weather began to clear those who were participating in the parade gathered in East Haverhill, and the parade started on time, at 10:30, with Mr. Pike leading the way. He was followed by drum major P.S. Start and the Pike Brass Band. The floats followed, and the Sunshine Club’s float, with their president, Miss Katharine Pike, “enthrowned in their

seemed to be the dominating person in the afternoon competition, placing first in the 100yard hurdle race, the standing broad jump, and the three-legged race (with W.C. The full day of events included a band concert, baseball game, and, what was considered the greatest event of the day, the drama “Willowdale” was presented to a packed house. According to the White Mountain Republic-Journal fireworks were discharged for the amusement of the “crowd which could not get into the hall.” The paper reported that because of the previous fireworks the display at the end of the play “did not seem

Franklin, on the other hand, was said to have omitted the customary Fourth of July celebration in 1906. The Union, of Manchester, New Hampshire, reported that the firemen of Franklin were expecting a big time in September when the state convention of firemen would be held there. And, “there is talk of a demonstration when the new library is dedicated.” One of my boyhood memories which occurs on or around “the fourth” is that of picking wild strawberries and having my Mother use them to make strawberry shortcake. Believe me it takes a lot of wild strawberries to make much of a shortcake, but when we were not accustomed to large,

cultivated strawberries the little ones sufficed, and they were good. To many, the chicken barbecue is a traditional activity. In my youth so was the July 4th intertown baseball game. Fourth of July traditions vary from town to town and from family to family, and many of them have been appropriate ways to celebrate the birth of a country based on freedom from tyranny. So I’ll conclude with some things that I think will be beneficial for America in these days. Let’s not forget the lessons of history and make the mistake of replacing what has proven to be good and right with less decent and honorable ways. The biggest struggle we face today is an inward one between what constitutes right and wrong. And instead of waging revenge and

demanding retribution from those who have wronged us, why not offer forgiveness and kindness? We are not going to achieve equality by separating skin colors or convince others to

love by accusing them of hatred. And let us remember the God that we so often ask to bless the United States of America!

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 1, 2021— STOSSEL from 7 Hartford fare from $5 to $1. Because of capitalists like them, Mitchell points out, “We went from agricultural poverty to a country characterized by middleclass prosperity.” Still, I’m told that even if capitalism brings us cheaper or better products, it just isn’t “good for us.” That’s Myth No. 6. Of course, capitalism can breed nasty materialism. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson sneers, “Does anybody believe cheaper iPhones or more Amazon deliveries of plastic garbage from China will make us happy?” Mitchell responds, “We’re not buying iPhones and plastic garbage unless we think it’s better for us than the dollars that we have!” That’s a very important point. No capitalist gets our money unless we voluntarily choose to exchange it

for whatever he’s selling. As Mitchell puts it, “Capitalism is the only system that gives people the liberty to make their own choices.” Myth No. 7: Capitalism’s pursuit of profit drives businesses to create robots that will eventually take away most everyone’s job. It could happen. Artificial intelligence is powerful. Maybe this time is different. But again and again, experts predicted that employment was about to decline -- and again and again, they’ve been wrong. Some people do lose jobs. Capitalism promotes creative destruction. It’s terrible for the fired employee. But it’s good for most everyone else. It’s what allows for innovation. Mitchell points out, “The computer destroyed the typewriter builder’s job, electricity took candlemakers’ jobs,” but those jobs were soon replaced

with better ones. Capitalism has continually generated more jobs. When America began, 90% of workers worked on farms. Now fewer than 2% do. And there are millions more of us. “As long as our economy has the dynamism that free markets allow,” says Mitchell, “we’re going to see more job creation and higher income levels. That’s what makes the children and grandchildren of typewriter makers so much better off. No other system anywhere in the world has ever come close to capitalism’s ability to generate mass prosperity.” John Stossel is author of “Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media.” For other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit www.creators.com.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 1, 2021— METZLER from 7 the fighting while a rot of corruption marinated much of the Afghan government and police. Nearly a decade following his retirement, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, once the celebrity-like green robed leader Washington placed its hopes on, told The Associated Press that the U.S. and NATO troops being withdrawn from Afghanistan are leaving behind a disaster. He stated, “The International community came here 20 years ago with this clear objective of fighting extremism and bringing stability… but extremism is at the highest point today.” “So they have failed” he said. He conceded that the Afghans had many failures too but Karzai alleged his country was being left “in total disgrace and disaster.” Karzai exhibited an ungrateful bitterness towards the Americans and many European allies who sent troops and billions in development aid to help his embattled country fight terrorism, ethnic violence and a pervasive narcotics culture. To the more than 2,200 U.S. troops who died and 20,000 thousand more with loss of limbs, PTSD and lifelong injuries, and their families, this is a loathsome insult. America has already sacrificed too much in blood and treasure to continue in an unending and largely thankless task.

The UN’s envoy Lyons stated unequivocally, “There is only one acceptable direction for Afghanistan, away from the battlefield and back to the negotiating table.” There’s no doubt the people of Afghanistan have been the biggest victims; to this day fighting kills large numbers of civilians, children have hideous injuries from bombs, and the perpetual conflict since the original Soviet invasion in 1979 has created an enduring psychological trauma. Addressing the Security Council Ms. Lyons warned that there was barely time left “to prevent a worse-case scenario from materializing,” adding ominously that “increased conflict in Afghanistan means increased insecurity for many other countries, near and far.” She added, that such a conflict “creates a more permissive environment for terrorist groups to recruit, finance, plan and conduct operations with a global reach.” The Biden Administration plans to end a war ironically by the fateful day on which it started, September 11th. What could possibly go wrong? ************** John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is the author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations: Germany, Korea, China.

SHAPIRO from 6 this -- if Americans lobby school boards to bar indoctrination in the cultish nonsense of CRT -- these institutional actors tell those Americans that there is nothing to see. The grassroots pushback against CRT is rooted in the best of the American tradition: a rejection of racial essentialism in favor of individualism, an enthusiastic endorsement of agency rather than determinism, a willingness to stand united against tribalism. We all ought to fight those who have hijacked and weaponized our institutions against all of these traditionally American ideals. Anything less would be an abdication of the trust we have been given -- a trust that has resulted in liberty, equality and prosperity beyond imagining for nearly all of human history. their own attorney but are given a court-appointed attorney, who works in partnership with the opposing party. The guardians, who are supposed to be serving the best interest of the senior, instead use the elder’s money to fight against their advanced directives or wishes. The result is usually the elders losing their homes and being placed in lockdown facilities. If a family member complains, the guardianship playbook calls for a court hearing to claim that the family member is ‘interfering’ and they are then isolated from their loved one.” Lacy is a member of the National Association to Stop Guardianship Abuse. Her beloved father, Stan Zurko, died at

the age of 102 last year after a horrific struggle with a public guardian who separated him from family, hid legal documents from him, and withheld medication and living expenses. Lacy sought help from local and county officials in Ventura County, California, who turned a deaf ear and blind eye. Zurko died in May 2020, barred from moving in with his daughter, and gave up “out of despair that no one would hear him or help him,” Lacy said. “He lost his will to live with so many people in court physically, emotionally and financially harming him, until he just gave up and took his last breath.” The family’s plight is still not over. Zurko’s assets have been liquidated by the conservators, and Lacy is saddled

with $250,000 in legal bills. The allegation that Harris threatened Nina Simone’s family in the battle over her estate will be very familiar to other families who have faced similar intimidation by the Probate Predator Mafia. “Many family members have been put in jail under false pretenses just to shut them up. My funds are depleted from paying all the expenses and attorneys’ fees. I have all the documents and validation of the abuse to my father, but I can’t hire an attorney with no funds,” Lacy told me. “This is exactly what these predators do -deplete the family of all funds so they will not be sued.” The system is rigged. Vulnerable victims have little recourse against a

cabal of ruthless thieves and grifters in black robes and three-piece suits. The good news is that families are fighting back and opening eyes. The bad news is that too many establishment journalists are more interested in serving as sycophants to elites than defending the helpless. I’ve asked Kamala Harris’ office for comment on the Probate Predator epidemic. How many others will stand up? Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@ protonmail.com.
