A Wish Come True For A Little Princess by Rob Levey Weirs Times Correspondent

Wishing for the impossible is viewed as dreaming, which does not explain the reality of 4-year-old Maddie, whose wish to stay in a princess lake house on Lake Winnisquam is about to come true. Diagnosed with interstitial lung disease after suffering from chronic respiratory infections since 18-months-old, Maddie made her wish to Make-A-Wish New Hampshire, which found a way to make it come true. “It was overwhelming to see at the reveal of her wish

how many people donated their time to get everything ready and to see all the people who have volunteered their time,” said mother Amanda Patterson. “It is amazing how much time and effort have gone into this wish.” In total, Maddie and her family will stay for one week on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia toward the end of July. Donated by a local family, the house will feature princess themes and be decorated with princess dresses and photos of princesses, so Maddie and sister Kayleigh think it is a lake house See MADDIE on 30

Repeal Housing Appeals Board

—OBITUARY— RITA E. JOHNSON, 77 Rita E. Johnson passed away peacefully in her home in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on June 29, 2021 at age 77. Born in Wakefield Massachusetts to Lydia Jaworski Johnson, and Guy Johnson, Rita was predeceased by Lydia, Guy and her brother Jimmy. Rita is survived by her brother Guy Junior of Reading, her loving sons Chris, Nathan, and Glen McNulty and 6 grandchildren. Rita graduated from Reading Memorial High School and later, Mount Ida College in Newton. An avid artist her whole life, in the early 1990s Rita turned her love of visual illustration into a successful business in the budding field of computer generated graphic arts. When she moved from Massachusetts to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire 10 years later, Rita brought this business with her and ran it from her home office for the years that followed. A memorial service for close friends and family will be held at Lords funeral home in Wolfeboro on August 7th from 11 AM to 1 PM, and the family welcomes modest donations to the Lakes Region Humane Society (https://lrhs.net/) in Rita’s memory.

To The Editor: Every town should file an “amicus brief” supporting Francestown vs the state’s unconstitutional “Housing Appeals Board”. The HAB has had a devastating effect on Francestown. They have ruled in favor of a developer, overriding the wishes of the people regarding Francestown’s historical district. The HAB is made up of only three very compromised individuals with potentially serious conflicts of interest. The HAB has total control over any board in your town and the right to overturn any decision that has been made in compliance with a town meeting vote. This means a total loss of local control when it comes to having a say in the way you want your town to develop. The mistake that “social justice warriors” make when they seek to have the “state” overturn local rules is thinking the town is imposing zoning and planning laws when it’s the people who voted for those laws. This is the purest form of democracy — the popular vote — and governance that is closest to the people. It should be respected. Ask your town select boards, councils, planning boards and zoning boards if they are aware of this situation and ask what they will they do about it. Demand Governor Sununu immediately sign an executive

order to repeal this tyrannical state board that was secretly created within a previous budget because it failed to pass a vote of the legislature about 3 times. Otherwise, Sununu’s legacy will be that he knowingly set out to destroy the New Hampshire Advantage. Jane Aitken Bedford Residents Assoc.

Questions That Need Answers

To The Editor: Is it my imagination or have New Hampshire’s two United States Senators been wrong on every major issue facing us as American Citizens. The Democratic controlled Senate under the direction of Chuck Schumer from New York voted to defund the police. Does this mean that in New Hampshire there will be an effort to reduce police protection in cities like Manchester and Portsmouth ? We know that most of the police budget provides for salaries so you be the judge. Has anyone asked either of these two a direct question regarding this concern ? The majority of voters across the country view immigration as the most important issue now facing this nation. Where are the people flooding into the country going ? Have either of these two provided any information in light of the fact that millions of taxpayer dollars are being spent to support this effort ?

These two Senators have been proponents of spending six trillion dollars to fund programs that have absolutely nothing to do with infrastructure. The American people want infrastructure maintained but not silly open ended programs that will bankrupt this country. This is not the American Way and certainly not the New Hampshire Way. Someone needs to approach Senator Hassan who will soon be up for re-election and ask questions the Demand clear answers. Kenneth L. Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Gilmanton Historical Society Presents “Music In My Pockets”

Children’s Story Time At New Hampshire Boat Museum On Fridays, July 23 and August 20, from 10:30am to 11:30am, the Wolfeboro Public Library will visit New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM) for Children’s Story Time. For children ages 2 - 6 years old, Story Time is approximately an hour and spent with Children’s Librarian Jeanne Snowdon, who reads a selection of age appropriate books. Admission for children and one accompanying adult is free. “It’s a wonderful hour that can be followed up by a tour of the museum and our exhibits, including locally produced artwork,” said NHBM Executive Director Martha Cummings. Pre-registration for Children’s Story Hour is not required. NHBM is located at 399 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH.

Three summer programs are scheduled by the Gilmanton Historical Society: “Music in My Pockets” with Jeff Warner on July 27, “History of Gilmanton’s Kitchen Family” on August 24, and “History of Gilmanton’s Jones’ Mills “on September 28. The programs will be held at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works, beginning at 7:30 pm. The season’s opening program, “Music in my Pocket,” brings Portsmouth musician Jeff Warner using “pocket in- Jeff Warner struments” like spoons and dancing puppets to show us how American families, before the advent of electricity, gathered around the hearth and entertained themselves with songs and stories. Social hour begins at 7pm; the program begins promptly at 7:30. The Society’s Museum, at Old Town Hall, will be open now through August every Saturday from 10 am until noon. Curator Lori Baldwin is working on digitizing much of the collection, beginning with vintage postcards and photographs. The Society, partnering with the Gilmanton Conservation Commission, is working on development of a farm museum at the Twigg Barn on Meetinghouse Road . It will house the growing collection of agricultural implements. For more information check out the Society’s website: gilmantonhistorysociety.org.

Classic Albums Live Performs “Hotel California” At Castle In The CLouds On Saturday, July 31, Classic Albums Live performs: The Eagles Hotel California at Castle In The Clouds in Moultonborough, NH. The album is performed note for note, cut for cut and this hit performance will have you dancing in the aisle and begging for more. The program is presented by Great Waters Music Festival and the show goes from 7:30-10pm. A review by Janice Hubbell, Blogger: “As Classic Albums Live band came on stage and the lights dimmed, I closed my eyes and was immediately transported back in time to 1976 while listening to the Eagles Hotel California vinyl record on my turntable. Beginning with the title track, every note and rhythm of each song was replicated perfectly. The lead vocals, haunting melodies, and beautiful harmonies were eerily accurate. The band did not wear cheesy costumes or speak as the music faded away into the next song. The audience, during the album’s genuine and authentic performance, was quiet and appreciative, no doubt on the same nostalgic journey I was.” Tickets are $40-$125 and can be purchased at greatwaters.org

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

A Definite “Maybe” If you read last week’s column you know that I am considering another run for governor under the Flatlander Ticket. by Brendan Smith O n c e t h e Weirs Times Editor word got out to of my supporters, the pressure was on for me to do it. They both seem to think the time is perfect. It seems pretty clear that Governor Sununu won’t be running again in 2022. He will most likely follow the tried and true path of “public service” and run for senator. So, with the governorship most likely up for grabs next year and no incumbent in the race, my supporters feel the sooner I do make the announcement I am running, the more time I will have to travel across the state and bring people my message. The message is important, so it needs to be crafted carefully. I have learned many things in my decades unsuccessfully running for governor. I have tried all sorts of approaches that I thought would work. I even held a sort of lottery in 2010 where anyone sending me a selfie of there ballot with my name written in for governor would be entered in a drawing for a home entertainment system. I got a few more votes than usual, but it didn’t have much effect. I even tried the honesty approach where I told voters that I was only running for the $100,000 a year salary, trying to get the every day working man. That didn’t work either. It seems people today, like throughout history, still vote on the “Maybe Theory” which is based on the premise that

if you vote for so-and-so then “maybe” things will actually change like they promised. More often than not, after the election they find out that after their candidate does get elected that the “maybe” was not to be and nothing was going to change much. It really didn’t matter much which candidate from which party wins, “maybe” just wasn’t going to happen. (Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but they usually spent so much time fighting others to actually change things that they never got much done.) So, this next campaign, if I chose to run (which is what you have to say for a few months when you know darn well you are running) I will have to revert back to the tried and true campaign method of just telling people I am going to do stuff that I know I will never be able to do. It has worked for a couple of hundred years now, so why mess with success? I am also going to be sure to use the term “public service” when I talk about why I want to be governor. People really seem to eat that one up. If I’m lucky, and people buy it, then I will follow the stepby-step game plan of “public service” that has been successfully completed by so many before me. If elected, then the obvious next phase of “public service” is senator, followed by the Big Kahuna of “public service”- president. Chances of ever being the Big Kahuna are small, so just decades of being a highly paid senator will work. Even better, I can retire from the senate to become a special interest lobbyist where I can make gobs of money. Either way, the end result might see me in a big house or three. Right Bernie? Maybe even a maid and a private jet. Who knows? Public service can

be very lucrative. If I do stay in the senate for decades and finally retire, then they will throw a big party for me for my years of “public service.” You will need a special invite to be admitted and, if you are a regular Joe who voted for me over and over, maybe I will gift you with a selfie. The least I could do. Afterwards a well-deserved vacation at one of my three homes where I will spend my retirement still in “public service” doing things like working with the local planning board to make sure no one builds a house anywhere near my beach house. Coming full circle in a way. Of course, this is all just a dream right now, but one that can never be fulfilled if I continue on my previous campaign strategies of telling people the truth. It was worth a shot, but the time has now come to stick to what is tried and true. Of course, to play the game, over the next few months I will talk with the press and look solemn as I say I am seriously considering another run. Telling them I will weigh my options and take into consideration how it will affect my family. (Which is true. After all, going from living in a small cape to possibly one day owning a private beachfront home can be traumatic.) Once I have thought it over carefully, I will then give my decision and if I do decide to run, I promise to be one of the best candidate of “maybe’ I can be. Feds’ Bill for No-Fly Secrets: $4,536 I sent a simple request in April to my government for public data that taxpayers have the right to see. Through the federal Freedom of Information Act, I asked the Transportation Security Administration (as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation) for the following information: No. 1: The policy statement outlining the processes and criteria according to which by Michelle Malkin officials nominate, consider and approve Syndicated Columnist names for the no-fly list, selectee list and extended selectee list. No. 2: All information, documents, records and communications within the TSA and/or between the TSA and the FBI regarding attendees of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rally and their inclusion on the no-fly list, selectee list and extended selectee list from Jan. 6, 2021, through the present. (I requested copies of all information, records, emails, phone logs/transcripts, letters, notes, memoranda and all electronic or nonelectronic communications/records/information related to aforementioned events and aforementioned parties.) No. 3: All information, documents, records and communications within the TSA and/or between the TSA and the FBI using the search terms “Nick Fuentes,” “Nicholas Fuentes,” “Nicholas J. Fuentes,” “America First,” “Lauren Witzke,” “AFPAC” or “Groypers.” You’ll be interested to know, my fellow American citizens and taxpayers, that the price of unlocking the TSA/FBI’s no-fly secrets is precisely $4,536 ($28/hour). Michael Tobias, government information specialist at Department of Homeland Security/Transportation Security Administration/Freedom of Information Act Branch, informed me that “it would take a combined search time of 162 hours” to fulfill my request and that half of the estimated cost -- $2,268 of the $4,536 -- would be due up front as an advance payment. “Thank you and have a great day!” Tobias ended his missive to me. So much for “freedom” of information. LOL. I have appealed this onerous tax on investigative journalism and refiled my FOIA request this week, noting that I am a member of the media and reiterating that any information I receive will be shared with the public. Stay tuned for updates, but in the meantime, ask yourselves (and your elected representatives, while you’re at it) this question: What is our government trying to hide at such a high cost to ordinary Americans? As I reported in this column See MALKIN on 36

What Foreign Dissidents Understand About The American Flag

This week, thousands of Cuban dissidents marched against the repressive communist tyranny that has subjugated the Cuban people for three generations. They chanted “Libertad!” and called for the end of the by Ben Shapiro regime. And they carried Syndicated Columnist aloft a symbol of freedom: the American flag. This isn’t a rarity. It’s a common sight among protesters for freedom worldwide. Before Hong Kong was turned into yet another municipality of the Chinese communist tyranny, freedom-seeking dissidents marched by the tens of thousands, carrying the American flag. When Iranian protesters stand up against the mullahcracy subjecting their nation to theocratic despotism, they refuse to deface the American flag. They do so for a reason: people all over the world understand that the American flag stands for freedom. The people of Britain and France understood it in 1917 just as they did in 1944. The prisoners of Auschwitz understood it; the freedom fighters in Hungary and Poland and Czechoslovakia understood it; South Korean patriots understood it; the Kurds understood it. For generations, the Stars and Stripes has been a symbol of liberty to all those across the planet who dissent from totalitarianism. Which is why it is so striking that while foreign dissidents risk their very lives for their liberty to carry the American flag, American citizens who live in the freest, most prosperous, most racially tolerant nation in world history kneel for the flag, or burn the flag, or turn their backs on the flag. What do those abroad know that those at home don’t? That totalitarianism is far more common throughout the world, and throughout world history, than freedom; that individual rights may be universal, but they only manifest when those with the courage of their convictions fight for them; that in a world of darkness and chaos,

America -- for all of its flaws, both historic and present -- has been and remains a force for good. And yet today’s domestic Left can’t say that much. When White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the obvious disparity between Cuban dissident treatment of the American flag and American Leftist treatment of that same flag, she stammered, “Well, I would say first, the president certainly values and respects the symbol of the American flag. He’s someone who certainly waves it outside of his house, or does in Delaware and other places where he’s lived throughout his time. He also believes that people have the right to peaceful protests, and he thinks both can be true.” But that’s not the question. The question is whether it is morally right to scorn the flag, not whether Americans have the right to do stupid things. The fact that the White House cannot simply acknowledge that foreign dissidents have it right about the American flag, and that many on today’s American Left have it dead wrong, is telling and tragic. It’s tragic because a country that doesn’t believe enough in its own principles to defend its flag on moral grounds -- especially the flag representing a country that has freed hundreds of millions of people from tyranny and poverty -- will cease to project its core principles. And freedom fighters abroad will pay the price. The American flag will stop being a symbol of freedom and hope, and instead become just what its critics now say it is: a symbol of weakness and solipsism. If Americans believe that our flag is less a beacon of hope than a looming specter of oppression, we will withdraw from the world stage as we tend to the business of undermining and extirpating our foundational ideals. Which, of course, is the goal of the American Left. And the global power vacuum won’t be filled by liberal elites, but by totalitarian powers who aren’t nearly as apologetic about their own ambitions.

Break Rules America has so many regulations that today, often the only way to do something new, to create something great, to prosper is to ignore rules. Minutes before by John Stossel SpaceX launched Syndicated Columnist a rocket, the government told the company that the launch would violate its license. SpaceX launched anyway. CEO Elon Musk says that the Federal Aviation Administration has “a broken regulatory structure” and that “there is simply no way that humanity

can become a spacefaring civilization without major regulatory reform.” But reform isn’t likely. While businesses must constantly adjust to survive, once bureaucrats create regulations, they have no incentive to repeal them, ever. Instead, they add hundreds of new ones every year. Musk complains that government “can overregulate industries to the point where innovation becomes very difficult. The auto industry used to be a great hotbed of innovation ... but now there’s so many regulations that are intended to protect consumers. ... Regulation for cars could fill this room.”

So, Musk broke rules to make Tesla the success it is. He knew he couldn’t innovate if he obeyed all of them. He’s flaunted the rules of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, even tweeting that SEC stands for “Suck Elon’s ... “ So far, he’s gotten away with it. So have a few others. In my latest video, Adam Thierer, author of “Evasive Entrepreneurs and the Future of Governance,” explains why rule breakers are the best hope for innovation. “When 23andMe came out with genetic testing by mail,” he says, “They didn’t get a permission slip from the Food and Drug Administration. They

just started providing that service.” Once the bureaucrats noticed, they ordered 23andMe to stop offering health insights based on genes. “The product was off the market for over a year. That stopped genetic testing by other companies, too,” says Thierer. “Smaller players saw what the government did and said, ‘I don’t want that to happen to me.’” This delayed innovation for years. “Maybe the only way to succeed today is to break the rules,” I suggest. “Yes,” says Thierer. “Just to go out and try doing it.” A group of parents whose children have diabetes did that. They develSee STOSSEL on 35

American Marxism Most people sense that America is under assault by Americahating forces and worry that our freedoms are actually in jeopardy. by David Limbaugh Mark Levin’s new Syndicated Columnist book, “American Marxism,” confirms those fears, exposes the chilling aims and methods of these malicious groups, and provides a blueprint to restore America to a path of recovery. Levin has a gift for distilling abstract ideas into understandable terms for lay consumption. I’ve personally written and discussed many of the ideas he addresses in this compelling book but had not considered the term “counterrevolution” to

describe what we’re witnessing. He is exactly right. This is a counterrevolution to the American revolution, and horrifyingly, “It is devouring our society and culture, swirling around our everyday lives, and ubiquitous in our politics, schools, media, and entertainment.” He is also correct that this disturbing insurrection is no longer a fringe movement but is in the mainstream of our culture and institutions. Mark identifies the source of this threat — Marxism — the sinister, utopian ideology “responsible for the enslavement, impoverishment, torture, and death of untold millions.” But he goes further and usefully tags the particular brand of this menace as “American Marxism”: “the application and adaption of core Marxist teachings to American society and

culture.” What makes the counterrevolutionaries particularly dangerous is their sophisticated techniques of distorting language, disguising their true intent with deceitful euphemisms to disarm patriots and facilitate their scheme to fundamentally transform this nation into something unrecognizable to its founders and wholly unacceptable to all who cherish and revere the glorious American experiment in self-governance. They’ve labeled themselves “progressives,” “social activists” and other innocuous-sounding terms because they know Americans still, by the grace of God, reject naked Marxism. More recently, they operate under such organizations as Black Lives Matter, cloaking their anti-capitalist designs in a facade of racial, environ-

mental or gender justice. They have foisted their once-ridiculed notion of critical race theory into the forefront of our lives, forcing this dangerous philosophy into mainstream societal acceptance. Race agitation isn’t their only weapon. They’ve achieved considerable traction in the advancement of their agenda through divisive class warfare, which fuels their destructive policies of obscene deficit spending, confiscatory taxation, and runaway governmental and bureaucratic regulation. Their shameless employment of identity politics is just one of many arrows in their quiver. They expand their arsenal to ensure that certain setbacks will not ultimately thwart their agenda. Should We Hold An Article V Convention? by Hal Shurtleff Director, Camp Constitution Alton, NH

The Founding Fathers gave us two ways to amend the U.S. Constitution in Article V: Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate. Since the ratification of the Constitution, only the first method has been used. We have never held an Article V Convention, and for good reason. A brief history of Article V, and the modern Article V Movement: • 1789: First application for an Article V introduced by New York. Since then, over 600 applications for an Article V have been introduced. • 1915-1917: Applications for an Article V Convention for the direct election of senators were two states away from the needed 2/3rds. Congress ended up passing the amendment and 3/4ths of the states supported this federal power grab. • 1970s to 1980s, we were two states away from an Article V Convention. • 1987-1988, Alabama and other states rescind their applications. • 2000-2010: Numerous states rescinded all applications for an Article V Convention. • 2010: New Hampshire rescinds all applications for an Article V. • 2011: Harvard Law School host a “Conference of the Constitutional Convention” sponsored by left-wing law professor Larry Lessig who is on record as calling for a new constitution, and

Mark Meckler of the Tea Party Patriots. • 2012: An application for an Article V Convention passed in New Hampshire. • 2013-2014: Wellfunded groups on the Left and Right were created including Wolf PAC founded by Cenk Uygur of the Young Turks, and Convention of the States founded by Mark Meckler. • 2014-2021: Fifteen states passed Convention of States sponsored resolutions while dozens of states rejected this resolution. In New Hampshire it was recently voted down 19-1 in committee. Here are some of the reasons to hold an Article V Convention articulated by its supporters, whom I maintain are mostly wellintentioned, with my rebuttals: We Have An OutOf-Control Federal Government. While I agree that we have an of control federal government, we also have some out-of-control state governments that ea-

gerly go along with an out-of-control federal government. Big Money Needs To Be Out Of Politics. We have dozens of campaign finance laws and adding an amendment will not address the issue. Big Money does not always win elections as demonstrated in 2016. An Article V Convention Cannot Be A “Runaway”. An Article V Convention is by its very nature a runaway convention. State legislators can only apply for one; the Constitution does not grant them power to limit the scope of a convention. Three-Fourths Of The Of The States Are Needed To Pass Any Proposed Amendments Which Would Effectively Stop Any “Unreasonable” Amendments From Being Passed.

States have not only passed “unreasonable” amendments, the 16th, and 17th are two that come to mind, See SHURTLEFF on 34

Green Peas In December Oregon’s Protection Against Slavery

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

In the middle of the nineteenth century the United States was growing with the addition of western territories. The Free Soil Party was formed with the goal of preventing those territories and the states that would be carved out of them from possessing slaves. It was not an abolitionist party, in that it did not demand that southern states set their slaves free, but there were those within the party who were abolitionists. One of those men was John P. Hale, a United States senator from New Hampshire and a powerful, though maybe not popular, political operative. The Free Soil Party was a significant third party from 1848 to 1852, having state and national conventions and was instrumental in the birth of the Republican Party. There were differing opinions in those

Free Soil Party Banner. days concerning the interpretation of some of the United States Constitution’s statements in relation to slavery, and that disagreement continues to this day. The question involves whether the Constitution of the United States, as originally written, permitted slavery or prohibited it. The 1949 New Hampshire State Free Soil Party Convention was divided on the issue, and it became

an item of ridicule by rival parties. Believe it or not, there was a connection between the 1849 state convention of the Free Soil Party and green peas in Oregon. The New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette accused the New Hampshire Free Soilers of being “... now prepared to overstep the limits of the Constitution, and to interfere, by political action, in the institu-

tion of slavery in the States where it exists.” In capital letters the newspaper exclaimed: “THEIR ORGANIZATION IS A LEAGUE AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION AND THE UNION.” To tell what went on at the convention the newspaper reported the exchange between some of the constituents. Squire Fowler was said to be the main resolution maker at the gathering and his resolutions were received “harmoniously” until he offered one declaring that “the only hope for liberty in this country, was in the ultimate abolishment of slavery.” Mr. Cooper of Croydon objected to the resolution, saying that it was interfering with slavery in the slave states and would receive the charge from Democrats and Whigs that they were disunionists. Mr. Sperry, of Claremont, didn’t like the Constitution, and said that the Constitution was “a covenant with death, an agreement with hell.” Mr. James of Deerfield responded that he loved the Constitution and detested the utterance made by the gentleman from Claremont. Mr. Sperry said that Mr. See SMITH on 33

Contributing Writer

Even when nothing out of the ordinary is seen, walks in nature are still valuable and memorable. While my recent walks haven’t been full of extraordinary sightings, many moments stick out in my mind as enduring. Here are a few: A friend and I were taking a walk in a large conservation area dominated by wide swaths of fields. Thank goodness for those areas because birds such as bobolinks need that habitat to nest. While bobolinks were indeed plentiful, another sighting remained with me from that walk. We were about to round a corner of the path that cuts through the field when we noticed something on the trail ahead. It was large and dark and I thought at first it was a mammal such as a groundhog. Then I thought it was a turkey. Finally, my eyes and mind started to work together and I realized it was a turkey vulture. I could tell from its movements that it was eating something. Why else would a turkey vulture be sitting on the edge of a trail in the middle of a field? I peered through the binoculars and no-

It’s highly unlikely that the vulture killed the snake, but rather a hawk, kestrel or some other large predator. As a supplemental sighting to that one, a second turkey vulture was perched behind us in a snag. It had gone unnoticed until we walked past it. Our heads turned when it flew off its perch and left the dead branch bouncing up and down like that old drinking bird toy. We heard its wings as it flapped

past us. A resident red-winged blackbird did not take kindly to the circumstance and chased after the vulture rather aggressively. The vulture rose quickly, which seemed to satisfy the blackbird. During that same walk, a multitude of monarchs (I think that should be the official name for a group of monarchs) visited the ubiquitous milkweed in the fields. Several of the monarchs were mating and therefore attached while flying. We found out later that monarchs can See BOSAK on 18

The Wright Museum Renames Lobby WOLFEBORO - The Wright Museum of World War II recently renamed its lobby to The Carole Wright Welcome Center, which honors the ongoing contributions of Carole Wright, wife of museum founder David Wright. “Her understated leadership and total commitment to David’s vision for the Wright Museum has inspired all of us here,” said Mike Culver, executive director. “Her endless warmth and good humor make it undeniably fitting that the beautiful new entrance lobby has been renamed The Carole Wright Visitor Welcome Center.” For Wright, whose husband David passed away in 2003, the museum’s continued growth is “amazing.” “The entire thing is a

dream come true,” said Wright, who serves on the museum’s board. “It’s an amazing place, and I thank all the board members and especially to Mike for making it happen—it’s a treasure. David would be thrilled…It’s a great legacy he left for all of us.” It is a legacy Culver said he takes very seriously, which to some extent informs how he approaches his role. “Each year, we develop or bring in new exhibits to highlight lesser known aspects of World War II and American history, including other wars, and their relevance to today,” he said. “It’s important we continue to create new learning experiences for people of all ages.” Currently, the museum features an ex-

hibit on World War I, made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which provided major funding support. Major funding has also been provided by The Ballentine Family Charitable Fund with additional support from Laconia Daily Sun. The exhibit, WW1 America, explores vitally important stories of a transformational and divisive era for a broad, multi-generational audience. “The exhibit is visually dynamic with largescale photographs, moving images, multimedia environments, and recreated settings such as a movie theater,” said Culver. “It is also a socially interactive forum with stories and many

period artifacts supported by authentic voices expressing competing views.” According to Culver, nearly everything that happens at The Wright reflects the vision of David Wright with continued support from Carole. “Renaming the lobby honors the museum’s roots, as we look to a brighter, more inclusive future for Americans,” he said. The region’s leading resource for educators and learners of all ages on World War II, The Wright features more than 14,000 items in its collection that are representative of both the homefront and battlefield. Henderson, Butler, And Roberts … “Of Thefts And Drinks” by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Sounds like a law firm, but those are really the names of three thieves who are also exalted Boston sports heroes that rate recognition—even now. Although in the pantheon of New England sports icons the names Henderson, Butler, and Roberts may not resonate the way that Yastrzemski, Orr, Brady or Bird might, neither Henderson, Butler, nor Roberts should ever again have to buy a drink in a Boston bar. (Actually two Hendersons: Dave and Gerald.) Last week we recollected Dave Henderson’s exploits in helping the 1986 Red Sox get to the World Series. But Gerald—the former Celtic—deserves to be remembered as well. Why? Because in the fashion of John Havlicek and Larry Bird, Henderson “Stole the Ball!” Havlicek’s steal against the 76ers during the 1965 NBA playoffs and Bird’s steal against the Pistons during the 1987 NBA playoffs are counted amongst the league’s top historical moments. You-Tube them and relive the thrills. And while at it, relive Gerald Henderson’s Boston Garden moment from 1984 as well. You’ll love it—unless you’re a Laker fan. L.A. had a 1-0 Cham-

Dave Roberts. pionship Series lead against the Celtics. With seconds remaining in Game 2, Kareem, Magic and Company led 113-111—and had the ball. They were about to head home to L.A. with a 2-0 series lead. The Celtics were all but finished. Then Henderson intercepted a pass and scored to tie the game and force overtime. The C’s won to even the series and eventually prevailed in seven games for their 15th NBA title. Thank you, Gerald Henderson, wherever you are. Then there was Malcolm Butler’s steal. Also an interception, it was witnessed by a couple hundred million people at the end

of Super Bowl XLIX on Ground Hog’s Day, Feb. 2, 2015. The New England Patriots led defending champion Seattle 28-24, but the Seahawks had the ball on the Patriot one-yard line. With everyone expecting unstoppable Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch to get that one last yard for another Super Bowl win, the Seahawks inexplicably threw the ball. Butler, a rookie from Western Alabama, made the pick at the goal line to give the Pats a win. Thank you, Malcom Butler, wherever you are. Then there was Dave Roberts’ steal. It was October 17, 2004. The Red Sox trailed the

Yankees three games to none in the ALCS. Behind 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning during Game 4 at Fenway Park, BoSox first baseman Kevin Millar coaxed a walk from Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera. Roberts pinch ran. Everyone knew he’d try to steal second. Rivera threw three times to first to keep him close. Then on the first pitch to Bill Mueller, Roberts broke for second. He barely beat catcher Jorge Posada’s throw but successfully dove to the bag. The rest is history. Mueller drove him home. The BoSox won in extra innings, the first of eight straight victories over the Yankees and Cardinals en route to the World Series Championship which ended the Curse of the Bambino. Thank you, Dave Roberts, wherever you are. (Actually, we know where Roberts is. He lives in Los Angeles. A devout Christian, Roberts managed the Dodgers to last year’s World Series title.) Lecture and book signing by author Dr. Julien Ayotte. Code Name Lily is an historical fiction novel based on the true story of Micheline “Michou” Dumon-Ugeux (code name Lily), who was a legend in the Comet Line escape network in Belgium during World War II. Lily was responsible for helping over 250 downed British and American airmen escape over the Pyrenees into Spain and freedom.

Lecture & book signing by Jane Healey. Jane’s book is set in the final months of World War II in Europe. A literary critic said of the novel: “Through the eyes of Fiona Denning, a Red Cross Clubmobile worker, and her colleagues, we witness firsthand not only acts of courage and sacrifice, but also the romantic bonds that grow even during the horrors of war. Healey’s superb research lets us see the decimated cities, smell the doughnuts and coffee handed out at great risk on the front lines, and hear the big band music—as well as the approach of the next bomb.”

Lecture by Dr. Giovanni Frisone In September 1943, when an armistice was signed with the Allies, Italian soldiers thought the war had ended for them. Instead, they were arrested by the Germans and given a choice: continue fighting under Fascist or Nazi command or be taken to a German prison camp. An estimated 650,000 Italian soldiers chose prison camp. Ferruccio Francesco Frisone was one of those soldiers, and his story will be told by his son in this unique presentation.

Letters From God Letters From God

This series of Letters From God is an attempt to put the thoughts of God as revealed in the Scriptures as they relate to individuals and the nation of the USA.

QUESTION: All our foundations seem to be crumbling. What can we, who trust in you, do during these times? Yes, they are being shaken in unparalleled ways in the history of your country. Powerful forces are at work to dismantle the values and cultural norms established in the earliest days of your national existence. Your country was established with a profound trust and reliance upon me, my word and my values. Since you continue to walk away and abandoned me, everything is changing but not for the good. Because of sin within each of you, when you reject me, you reject my supernatural power to mitigate your sin. As a result, being left to yourselves, the worst of your nature is being revealed. I warned you, when I created you even back in the garden, that if you abandon me and walk away from me and disobey me, death will begin to ensue (Genesis 2:15-17). You have begun to “sow the wind” and now you “reap the whirlwind.” (Hosea 8:7) The question is, for those who still trust me and look to me and rely upon me for resources for life, what can you do when these

foundations are being shaken? This same question was asked by the Psalmist in Psalm 11 when the foundations of their day, were being shaken as well. Listen and learn from history and benefit from history in these challenging days. I had the psalmist write in Psalm 11 “In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me flee like a bird to your mountain. For look the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Those days were days in which it appeared that evil was triumphing over good. Those who held power, turned their power against my righteous ones and they sought to persecute and even destroy those who were trusting in me. Everything was upside down. That which was good was called evil and that which was evil was considered good. Days similar to yours today. But listen carefully to what I encouraged them with back then and would encourage you with today. Never forget, I am God and I am sovereignly in control over all the affairs of men and nations. If you trust in me, I will have the last word and you will be rewarded with my blessings. That’s why I called them in Psalm 11:1 to take refuge in me, the Lord. You see by con-

tinuing to trust in me, you trust in the only one who will ultimately be victorious and as a result you will share in my great victory. Evil may attempt to rise up and overthrow me and my Kingdom, but it will always fail and only I will remain standing. For you who trust in me, you will stand with me. You see when the foundations are being shaken, I remain the rock upon which those who stand shall never be shaken but only enjoy the rich blessings that I extend to those who continue to trust in me. Later in this same Psalm 11:4, I reminded them then and I remind you as well that I, the Lord, I’m in my holy temple and I continue to sit on my throne. From my throne I observe everyone on earth. I examine the hearts and the actions of every human being. I can see those who are righteous, but I can also see those who are wicked, who love violence. I am being patient, but unless those who continue in their wickedness turn from their sinful ways and trust me, a day of judgment in which “fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be there lot.” I concluded a final word of encouragement in Psalm 11:7 when I reminded them, and I remind you, “for the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face.“ I am a holy and righteous God. I do love justice and those who live upright or holy

lives, those who rely upon me and manifest my values and character. And when the dust clears and it’s time for you, the righteous, to stand before me, you will stand and see my face and enjoy my presence and blessings forever. And so, I say to you who are righteous, don’t worry about those foundations. The earthly ones will all crumble, but my heavenly ones will uphold you for eternity. I love you and can’t wait to reward you when we meet. God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

Can you remember back to when you first saw the movie, Jurassic Park? It was back in June of 1993 when Steven Spielberg’s prehistoric hit thrilled us all and left us wondering if it were truly possible to take ancient DNA and make monsters from long ago. So realistic was the film that I found myself looking over my shoulder when walking through the woods expecting a mega-beast to appear

from behind the trees. Luckily, it was only a movie but it brings us to this week’s topic of dinosaurs. An emerging brewer from our country’s heartland is producing smash hits as well. Please welcome to NH, Toppling Goliath. Toppling Goliath Brewing from Decorah, Iowa, was founded by Clark and Barbara Lewey in 2009 after very successful homebrewing ventures enabled them to go to the big time. Specializing in super-successful IPA’s and barrelaged stouts as well as everything in-between, they began to expand over and over and now distribute to over 30 states with 40 rotating beers year-round. They have a massive 2 floor tap room with 3

bars and a beer garden outside with amazing ‘better-than-normalbar-food’ cuisine. They have also developed a relationship with the Field Museum in Chicago which has a massive prehistoric exhibit. TGB beer is sold to visitors there. You can learn more about them at tgbrews.com The tale begins with two Sues. Both are related; one is the younger of the elder (of sorts). In other words, Pseudo Sue is an IPA and King Sue is a double IPA. The base is the same for both but King Sue is just more of a good thing. Pale golden yellow and opaque as orange juice, the Sues are incredibly well balanced. Not to much malt, nor too much bittering although

imbibers may find it more punchy than the usual New Englandstyle IPA. Mainly using citra hops, Pseudo is packed with pineapple, mango and other tropical fruit flavors right from the start. Medium in mouthfeel, it is fruity to begin and a tangy bite to finish. At 5.8% ABV, Pseudo is boldly refreshing. King Sue is slightly deeper gold and just bigger than Pseudo with much more punch in all directions. As you may have guessed by now, I am fond of the double IPA style and this one fits the bill. Same medium lathering of the tongue but more piney flavor. This 7.8% beauty is a keeper. T-rex to the rescue! BeerAdvocate.com See BREW on 18

We saw dozens and several males rose out of the tall grasses to sing their funny, strange and bubbly song. On a solo walk through the woods, I came across a pond I hadn’t discovered previously. The trail continued through the woods and there were no side trails leading to the pond. Unable to resist a closer look at water, I bushwhacked to the pond’s edge. A great blue heron stood on the far end of the pond and a small group of wood ducks gathered on a large rock serving as an island in the middle. I hadn’t seen wood ducks in several months and was thankful for the discovery. Later on that walk,

I came across a large swampy area with several snags. A great blue heron perched on one of the snags like the swamp sentinel. It is a rather common sighting to see great blue herons perched near swamps, but it’s always interesting to see nonetheless. One of my first birding memories, before I was obsessed with the hobby, was of a great blue heron perched on top of an evergreen in Green Mountain National Forest in southern Vermont. That moment still sticks with me. Finally, on two separate walks with a group of friends, the strange song of the veery and the boisterous call of the greatcrested flycatcher were constants in the woods, while cardinals and catbirds were most common where fields and woods met. As I mentioned, nothing extraordinary, but well worth it nonetheless.

MOFFETT from 13 other Boston sports icons, Henderson, Butler, and Roberts all left New England to finish their careers elsewhere. But their respective thefts immortalized their memories in these parts. If they ever happen to show up at any establishment in New England they should never have to pay for anything. Or outside of New England, for that matter, if they’re recognized by Boston fans. Which brings me to a 2006 Padre baseball game in San Diego at Petco Park. I was out there on a Marine Corps assignment and went with some friends to see some National League action. We got some nice seats on a pavilion with its own bar overlooking left field, which featured none other than Dave Roberts, then playing for the Padres. During a pitching change I told my buddies it was time for a toast. “For whom?” asked a fellow Jarhead. “Just watch,” I replied. I stepped down to the railing, hoisted my beer aloft, and yelled down to the Padre left fielder. “Hey Dave Roberts! Thanks for stealing second base!” Roberts laughed heartily and then looked up at me. Along with a happy smile he gave me a big “thumbs up.” Thanks indeed! Participants from the NH Boat Museum’s recent Sasquatch Footy Regatta. WOLFEBORO — Since 2008, the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Back Bay Skippers Model Yacht Club has delighted onlookers with races that feature radiocontrolled model yachts on Wolfeboro’s Back Bay. “Model yachting is a great way for individuals and families to enjoy the water,” said Martha Cummings, executive director of the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM), which helped form the group. “It is a fun, technical and engineering challenge to construct the boats, and they maneuver them with precision via radio controls.” In addition to racing

one another, NHBM Back Bay Skippers has taught model sail kit building classes to students and adults as part of NHBM’s STEM curriculum. “It is low impact and environmentally friendly way to enjoy New Hampshire’s small lakes and ponds and provides a wonderful social network for the participants,” added Cummings. Recently, the NHBM Back Bay Skippers hosted an annual Sasquatch Footy Regatta at Back Bay in Wolfeboro after a yearlong hiatus. The Sasquatch Footy Regatta is part of the Nor’easter Footy Series that consists of several

other regattas in the New England Area. “The event here in Wolfeboro was terrific with a great turnout,” said Cummings. The Sasquatch Footy Regatta also attracted individuals from American Model Yachting Association, (AMYA), which sanctions the Nor’easter Footy Series. “The national Footy Secretary Brian Mau made the trek from Buffalo, New York, a ninehour trip,” explained Cummings, who said he unfortunately could not compete. “His boat did not cooperate, but he admitted to being a guy who saw the glass half full, so he made the most of a beautiful day

with its accompanying camaraderie.” To learn more about model yachting, visit nhbm.org, or view model yachts in action on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m., at Bridge Falls Walking Path in downtown Wolfeboro.oat Company, Eastern Propane & Oil, Meredith Village Savings Bank, FL Putnam, Stark Creative, Bank of New Hampshire, and NH Humanities.

Author Jane Healey Presents “The Beantown Girls”

WOLFEBORO - On Tuesday, August 3, the Wright Museum will welcome Jane Healey, who will discuss her novel, The Beantown Girls. Set in Europe in the final months of World War II, The Beantown Girls is about a young woman and her two best friends who volunteered as Red Cross Clubmobile girls. According to Healey, whose grandfather was a firefighter on the Navy ships off the coast of Europe and North Africa, she was always “fascinated” by World War II, a fascination stoked by her discovery of Red Cross Clubmobile Girls. Clubmobile Girls operated mobile service clubs overseas during the war to provide servicemen with food, entertainment,

“The Beantown Girls” author Jane Healey will be at the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro on Tuesday, August 3rd at 7pm. and a connection to home. “The more I learned

about the women who were part of the program, the more I knew there was a story there,” said Healey. “The book is very much based on the true stories of the women who worked in the Red Cross Clubmobile program in World War II. It’s an honor to share their history and their contributions to the war effort.” Noting she left a career in high tech to become a freelance writer, Healey said her passion for historical fiction began with her first novel, The Saturday Evening Girls Club. “With the release of The Beantown Girls, I continue to fulfill my dream of writing about lesser-known stories of women in American history,” she said. The Wright Executive

Director Mike Culver said he looks forward to the presentation, which is part of their 2021 Lecture Series, presented by Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney. “It is one of those true stories of the war that remains largely unknown until now,” he said. The Beantown Girls lecture begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 3 followed by a book signing at the Wright Museum, 77 Center Street in Wolfeboro on the first floor of the new DuQuoin Education Center. Admission is $3 for members and $8 for non-members. Masks are optional for all fully vaccinated audience members. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling 603-569-1212. For more information about the 2021 Lecture Series, or museum, visit wrightmuseum.org. The region’s leading resource for educators and learners of all ages on World War II, the Wright Museum features more than 14,000 items in its collection that are representative of both the homefront and battlefield. Music Of Billy Joel At Lakeport Opera House LACONIA – On July 31 it will be a New Hampshire state of mind as the music of Billy Joel takes over the Lakeport Opera House with David Clark’s Songs in the Attic at 8 p.m. This musical tribute incorporates piano, vocals, and an eerily similar stage look to the Piano Man himself while engaging the audience with wit and humor. “Billy Joel’s songs are timeless,” said Tim James Everett, Lakeport Opera House venue director. “David Clark’s Songs in the Attic continues to gain notoriety with stunningly accurate piano playing and lead vocals combined with dynamic and high energy band performances. For the many fans of the Piano Man, it’s a must-see event.” Clark, a Long Island, New York native, and doppelgänger will perform Billy Joel’s top hits on a baby grand piano including “Just The Way You Are,” “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me,” “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” and “Tell Her About It” and so many more. Since the release of “Piano Man” in 1973, Billy Joel has had 33 Top 40 hits spanning three decades, all written by the man himself. He has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame among many other accolades. The Opera House is a 200-seat venue built

David Clark sings Billy Joel at the Lakeport Opera House on Saturday, July 31st. for comfort, style and mobility. Every seat in the house has unobstructed views, cocktail service and the best sounds system for an experience unlike any-

thing else in the area. Over $1 million was invested in the Opera House renovation

which opened in June after being closed for 60 years. Originally built in 1882, this venue mixes modern design elements with historic charm for a unique cultural experience. The Opera House is once again home to live musical performances, theatre productions, comedians, magicians as well as being host to community-focused events, weddings, and private and corporate gatherings. Once a mainstay of Laconia’s Lakeport community, the Opera House is on center stage in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Down to the Ravine Trail it was steep and the lower portion needed brushing too. We were relieved that the water wasn’t too high, we were able to cross Castle Brook by careful rock hopping. Once across we ate a big snack and hoped the addition of calories would make us warm and keep us happy. Finally we arrived at the intersection of See PATENAUDE on 28

The Link from the Castle Ravine Trail to the Israel Ridge Trail is now well manicured. PATENAUDE from 3 Redlining is the art of hiking every trail in the AMC White Mountain Guide. Many keep track of their progress by marking a map with a red Sharpie pen. I had only hiked this trail once before and thought I’d probably never do it again. But

getting to our assigned work section we could have taken a less difficult route but it was the same distance and they would have more steps towards completing their redlines. We pushed through many brushy places and I felt like I was in a car wash. We got

soaked quickly. We felt bad about hiking through the brush without taking our loppers out of our packs to remove it. Maybe we could come back later this summer. The 1.6 miles to reach the highpoint of the Link at the intersection of the Castle Trail

It’s a jungle out there! Keeping trails clear takes a lot of work. PATENAUDE from 27 the Castle Ravine Trail and our assigned work section. We pulled out our loppers and put on our work gloves. We cut back the brush and limbs of trees that blocked the path. “Not in my house.” Bria would cherrily chant while she removed an obstacle. The three of us leaped frogged as we worked. It was slow going in places. Young spruce trees that shouldn’t be growing right in the trail, bye bye. Hobblebush, oh dear you’re just too trippy and must go. We tossed branches off the trail and into the forest. We made it happy work. What rain? Yes it did seem like it took forever to reach Cascade Brook. It takes a long time to brush out a mile of trail. If it were a warm sunny day its ledges would have been a nice place

to rest and enjoy its cascading waters and big open view to Mt. Bowman. The crossing was a little tricky but our feet were soaked so stepping into a few inches of water didn’t matter anymore. We continued lopping down The Link after crossing over the Israel Ridge Trail. Since it was raining we didn’t take many photos or look at the time. I knew it was getting late because I was beginning to notice I felt wet and cold. I dug out my phone and saw that it was 3 o’clock! I announced the time. Danielle answered back, “15 more minutes.” We kept working. We didn’t finish that section but we got a lot cleaned up. We put our tools back in our packs and marched out the remaining 3 miles of The Link 3 back to Appalachia. We were outside for

8.5 hours and believe me we couldn’t have put on dry clothes any faster! It was a longer day than we had planned but I guess we were too busy having fun and getting our work done. Bria picked up a pizza in Jefferson at the Country Store while Danielle and I retrieved her car at Caps Ridge Trailhead. We had a pizza party in front of the roaring fireplace at my home in Franconia. Yes, Charlie built us a fire in July. We plan on doing more trail work later this month and hopefully the weather will be better. Have Fun. Amy Patenaude is an avid skier/outdoor enthusiast from Henniker, N.H. For wish granter Libby Giordano, part-time director of seacoast development at Make-AWish New Hampshire, granting wishes is personal. “Having been a wish mom myself, I’ve seen the impact that a wish can have on a child,” she said. “When a child’s wish is granted, that child replaces fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope. She is very excited.” At the party, which kicks off their week in the “princess lake house,” Patterson said the same princesses who revealed the wish in New Castle -- the family lives in Greenland -- will visit them again. “At the reveal party, there was a make-up artist there who did makeup for Maddie and her sister,” she explained. “They got them dressed and ready, and eight princesses showed up to give Maddie a scroll that granted her wish.” For Patterson, perhaps the most special part of the wish process is that the entire family has been included in it. “They make everyone in the family feel like they are part of it,” she said. “They did so much See MADDIE on 31

MADDIE from 31 For Maddie, this fight is turning in her favor. “Last week at an appointment at Boston Children’s Hospital, doctors were amazed at how she is doing,” said Patterson. Although Maddie will live with her condition her whole life, her mother expressed hope. “The next step is to follow her symptoms, but they may skip her infusions for a bit to see how she does,” said Patterson, who noted the pandemic may have been a good development for Maddie. “We pulled her out of school in March of last year, and it gave her time to heal,” she noted. “The

Free Soil Almanac.

NH Senator & Free Soil Party Member John P. Hale. SMITH from 9 James had said that he detested the sentiment that Sperry had uttered and the man who uttered it, but Mr. James replied that he said he detested the sentiment, but denied that he said he detested the man who said it. Eventually United States Senator John P. Hale expressed his support for the resolution and it passed with little opposition. The Concord newspaper, cited above, was obviously not a fan of Senator Hale, and used printed space to ridicule a speech that he gave at the Free Soil Convention in which, according to the newspaper, he made a claim about the Oregon territory that he had made fifty times previously. He talked about the extent of the territories of Oregon and California and how many states could be made out of that land comparable to the original thirteen.

So the editor(s)of The New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette found Senator Jack Hale’s speech about Oregon and liberty most amusing. They wrote that “Jack” put forth “... the idea that nature had rendered it impossible to sustain slavery in Oregon, by the startling intelligence that so mild was the climate that even up to latitude forty-nine, which Jack said was as far as we concluded to go, GREEN PEAS GREW IN THE OPEN AIR UP TO THE 25th DAY OF DECEMBER, and that they were always to be had at that season of the year..... Green peas in December! Great Country, that Oregon! Delightful climate! Well might Jack exclaim, as he did most eloquently, ‘you must go a considerable ways south on our Atlantic coast to get green peas on the 25th of December.’ Then there was the question wondering

why a mild climate in Oregon would make it safe from slavery. The newspaper continued the assault on Senator Hale’s conclusion. “If green peas can be had at that season of the year, in latitude 49 on the Pacific, then is liberty indeed in danger, and nature has thrown no obstacle in the way of introducing slavery into Oregon! But our southern friends didn’t know this fact about the green peas; if they had, they would hardly have consented to the provision in the Territorial Bill excluding slavery from that country. They would have defeated it...” They continued, insisting that , if Jack’s “representation is true, sugar and cotton may be grown in Oregon, up to 49; for we take it these articles must flourish where green peas can always be had up to the last days of December.” We Americans, including those of us here in New Hampshire, seem to love making fun of our politicians. The Concord newspaper of 1849 added a separate article to com-

pare Senator Jack’s story to that of Jack and the beanstalk. They considered the beanstalk tale to be nothing compared to “...Jack’s green peas in Oregon...producing as bountifully in

the piercing frosts and piling snows of Christmas days as in midsummer, and thriving as heartily in the bleak and cold latitude of 49 as in the balmy atmosphere of the tropics. Wonderful peas are

those; a fruitful country is Oregon, even up to 49; and a marvelous story-teller is ‘Pig or Puppy Jack.” Though Jack Hale was mistaken about Oregon, and he, and his Free Soil Party were ridiculed back in 1849, he came out strongly against the institution of slavery when others, even in New Hampshire were afraid to do so for fear of destroying the Union. The extent of Senator Hale’s influence in New Hampshire politics, however, and his interesting life must wait to be told in an additional article.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 22, 2021 — SHURTLEFF from 8 but states pass all kinds of unreasonable laws. Congress may choose state ratifying conventions which means state legislators may never have the chance to vote on any proposed amendments that come out of a convention. The Media Would Report On The Event. The Corporate Media, also known as Fake News, may report on the event but with its typical anti-freedom slant. It Is A Remedy That The Founders Gave Us-A Gift. Article V was not a remedy; it was a way to correct defects. The entire Constitution was the gift. States Need To Restore The Balance Of Power. State officials in both major parties are all too happy to accept federal money. If states want to restore the balance of power, then its officials need to stop taking federal money. The Constitution granted limited and specific powers to the federal government. States Have Constitutional Conventions All The Time Without Any Problem. While state conventions are not the same as an Article V Convention, there are plenty of examples of state conventions making profound changes at their conventions. In the 1840s, Pennsylvania held a convention which disenfranchised the black vote, and in the early 1970s, Montana’s convention ended up writing a new constitution. Republicans Control Many State Governments. Some of these “Republican majorities” refused to address widespread voter irregularities while many Republicans are RINOS-Republican in Name Only. Can we trust these Republicans? We Need A Term Limit Amendment. The Constitution already gives us term limits at the ballot box. A term limit amendment sounds

appealing but while it may “throw the bums out”, it will also throw some good legislators out while giving us a permanent lame duck Congress. We Need A Balanced Budget Amendment No, what we need is a constitutional budget. A balanced budget may lead to tax hikes. All the proposed balanced budget amendments have escape clauses which include a state of war or national emergency. We have been in a state of emergency for years, and this amendment will not only make a state of emergency constitutional, but it will also give us a perpetual state of emergency. The Constitution Is Outdated, And No Longer Valid For Our Times. This argument is articulated by those that believe the U.S. is an evil racist country. The U.S. Constitution is more valid today than it was in 1789. Here are a few questions to those who support an Article V Convention: •Where will it be held? •Who will pay for it? •Who will be the delegates? •Will members of Congress serve as delegates to the Convention? •How will they be chosen? By the states or by Congress? •Who will write these amendments? •Will delegates ignore their states’ instructions? These questions cannot honestly be answered since there is currently no laws or set of rules guiding an Article V Convention,

but Congress certainly has the power to pass laws controlling an Article V Convention. There are ways we can restore Constitutional government, but adding a batch of new amendments via an Article V Convention is not one of them and may prove to be a disaster. Then what can we do? ‘= Plenty. For starters people should read the Constitution. For a free pocket copies of the U.S. Constitution, please E-mail me at campconstitution1@ gmail.com In my next article, I will list specific recommendations to the readers. I will conclude with a quote by John Adams: Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, July 22, 2021 — LIMBAUGH from 7 shore up their bases, they promote extraconstitutional schemes to crush their opposition through ostensibly legal means, such as changing the voting rules to rig the playing field in favor of their candidates. In the name of preserving our democratic processes, they pervert them — disenfranchising people while pretending to protect their voting rights. We saw this on the front pages lately when President Joe Biden preposterously argued that such electionintegrity measures as voter ID were the greatest threat to American democracy since the Civil War. He also scored a twofer, as he invoked race — echoing his party’s position that these laws are a new form of heinous Jim Crow legislation. Anyone with half a brain recognizes that eliminating the requirement of proving one’s identity as a condition to voting destroys rather than safeguards the integrity of the election process. Anyone with half a molecule of discernment understands that to equate voter ID laws to suppression of the Black vote is the worst kind of patronizing insult to Black voters, who these demagogues imply aren’t capable of furnishing proof of their own identity. Levin astutely notes that while the counterrevolutionaries were formerly very cautious in concealing their goals, they are becoming more confident with their recent successes and thus more outspoken and brazen about who they are. They’ve also developed another formidable weapon to impose their ideas, which is to intimidate, silence and cancel

those who dare to oppose them or who even casually violate their draconian rules for acceptable speech and behavior. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Whereas the American Revolution was founded on liberty and representative government and led to the freest and most powerful nation in history, the counterrevolution aims to destroy our form of government, our cherished liberties, our society and our way of life. Levin soberly observes that to defeat the threat we face, “a unified, patriotic front of previously docile ... factions and forces” that believes America is worthy of defending must emerge. People of good will must wake up to the gravity of the threats we face and recognize “the urgency of the moment” and rise up to take back this nation. In “American Marxism,” Mark Levin paints a bleak picture of an America under siege, but he offers hope that we can turn this around and inspires us to unite around the noble cause of liberty and the salvation of the greatest nation the world has ever known. STOSSEL from 7 oped software that helps people track blood sugar levels. “Their hashtag is, ‘#WeAreNotWaiting,’” says Thierer. “What are they not waiting for? For the Food and Drug Administration to approve new insulin monitoring devices. Instead, they built them themselves. These devices were better than regulatory approved devices.” But it only happened because they had the courage to do it without permission. “Innovations come out of nowhere,” Thierer points out. “The problem is law sometimes blocks all of that and says, thou shall not until you get a permission slip. That’s the death of entrepreneurialism.” Ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft prospered only because they didn’t ask for permission; they just created ride-sharing apps. By the time sleepy bureaucrats noticed and took steps to regulate Uber and Lyft to death, the company had so many satisfied customers that politicians were afraid to crush them. Some regulation is useful. The alternative isn’t zero rules. “If a product is dangerous,” says Thierer, “it can be recalled. You can be sued. But don’t treat innovators as guilty until proven innocent.” It’s easier to see how absurd regulators can be when you look at old regulations. In 1982, after Sony’s Walkman came out, a New Jersey town banned wearing them while walking. “You couldn’t wear headphones because they would be a danger to yourself!” laughs Thierer. “Sometimes, laws stop making sense. Governments need to adapt.” COVID-19 persuaded some governments.

Suddenly, it was OK if private companies made virus tests, if nurses and doctors practiced in other states, if doctors used telemedicine without obsessing about stupid privacy rules, if liquor companies made hand sanitizer, etc. “All sorts of people started doing really interesting entrepreneurial things to try to just help each other out,” says Thierer. “Those laws needed to change,” Thierer concludes, “But most changed only because people evaded the system.” John Stossel is author of “Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media.” For other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit www.creators.com.

36 MALKIN from 6 in April, the subjects of my FOIA request (Nick Fuentes and Lauren Witzke) have faced repeated obstacles to traveling by air since the beginning of the year. rally for former President Donald Trump, but neither had entered the building. Neither has been charged with any crimes. Both were peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights. Yet, President Joe Biden’s TSA and multiple airlines told Fuentes he no longer has “clearance” to fly; Witzke cannot check into flights online, is swabbed for explosives and has “Secondary Security Screening Selection” marked on her tickets. My FOIA request would help unearth clues as to the cri-

Witzke called out the feds’ information lockdown for the bribery that it is: “The full force of the federal government is trying to extort ordinary Americans who just want to know the truth. WHY are they persecuting us?” Laura Loomer, another early and repeated victim of Big Government/Big Tech abuse, also weighed in: “Not
