PRO-TRUMP FLOTILLA ON THE BIG LAKE

Thousands Rally In Support Of Re-election Effort

On Saturday, August 22 a flotilla of hundreds of boats took to Lake Winnipesaukee to show their support for President Donald Trump with a peaceful victory parade. It was a beautiful summer morning as boats of all sizes, displaying American flags as well as Trump 2020 flags and banners met at Weirs Breach and made their way towards Meredith Bay. The organizer of the event was Mike Bordes of Laconia, who is himself running for a seat as a New Hampshire State Representative.

“We estimated that there were about 418 boats that were in the parade,” said Bordes. Locally organized Boat Parades showing support for the President have been happening all around the country and it only made sense that someone would organize one on New Hampshire’s biggest lake. The event was truly a grassroots effort by Bordes who got the word out about the boat parade through word

of mouth and social media. The NH Trump Victory team, part of a nationwide Trump Victory campaign, came on board and had representatives join in the parade as well as bringing along some Trump gear. “It really was a great event,” said Bordes. “With that many boats out there the waters got a little rough and not all the boats made the whole journey, but those who did had a

great time. I did not encounter one negative person during the entire parade. There were even people on land, who didn’t have boats, that showed up and brought along Trump signs.” The success of the Boat Parade has Bordes considering another event in support of a Trump re-election, but he has yet to work out the details. “The parade was really a great show of support,” said Bordes. “It was a peaceful celebration of our president and our great country.”

What Could Go Wrong?

return from their month vacation.

To The Editor: Of course the radical Democrats are correct about requesting all states be allowed to use mail-in voting. What could go wrong? Everybody gets a ballot in the mail and then you mark it and just send it in. No COVID-19 problems, everyone gets to vote, even if you don’t want to. What a well thoughtout program with the Federal Government sending out the ballots. A more pragmatic thought process might be --- why are the Dems pressing so hard for total mail-in ballots? We already can get an absentee ballot - however, you have to coordinate with Town Hall or City Hall so they know who you are and remove your name from the rolls for physically voting. A real check to ensure that only registered YOU gets to vote. Now what could go wrong with the Feds sending out ballots? As with the $1200 stimulus checks, everyone gets one - same sort of thing with these ballots. My Mom was also lucky enough to get her stimulus check - however, she has been deceased for more than 2 years. How about if you move 2 or 3 times? Which address gets the ballot? All three?? How about those illegal aliens that the Dems are trying to get licenses for? Do they get ballots also? Who’s checking ?? We might be able to get those well paid federal elected officials to debate this after they

Anyway, I’ll wait to see if my Mom gets to vote again in maybe her last election. Thomas C. Lehman Barnstead, NH.

Supporting Blankenbeker

To The Editor: As Air Mobility, Mobility Coordinator for the Navy SEALS, It is my privilege to introduce our Republican candidate for US Congressional Dist. 02, Lynne Blankenbeker. Lynne is a Captain in the Navy Reserves and formerly the Commanding Officer of the Navy reserve medical unit assigned to Navy Medical Center San Diego. Lynne has been deployed three times in support of operations in the Middle East and just returned from a deployment to the USNS Comfort in New York City. As an accomplished Combat Nurse and Veteran, she has dedicated herself to caring for Military Veterans and their families for over 34 years. Lynne commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through Air Force ROTC. Deployed to the Middle East in 1990 as an operating room and trauma flight nurse in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. She again answered the call by joining the Navy Reserve Nurse Corps in 2000 and following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi

Freedom. Lynne obtained her Juris Doctorate Law Degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center at UNH where she dedicated herself to ensuring healthcare reform and Veteran support for New Hampshire and the United States. In 2009 she won a special election for the NH House. In the legislature she worked on public health issues in addition to playing a key role in balancing the State’s budget. She won re-election in 2010 but was unable to run again in 2012 due to being recalled to active duty for deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan. In 2012 she was selected by the NH Federation of Republican women as their Woman of the year. Before her deployment to the USNS Comfort she was a key healthcare policy adviser at the Pentagon and Defense Health Headquarters ensuring our Navy Reserve Medical teams were properly maned, trained and equipped. We didn’t see any wildlife but the view over the water up to the ledgy top we just came from is well worth the little effort. The brewery we sampled was nearby Rek-Lis Brewing in Bethlehem. I could get used to pairing hikes with brews. Carey’s hand is always either holding See PATENAUDE on 18

It was a long hwalkO in a big r w e forest with CHemlock ledgy perches offering vistas towards Mt. Monadnock. The outing was made even better with a visit to Keene’s Elm City Brewery. Next up we headed north and hit the Sugarloafs high above the Zealand Valley. The bare ledgy tops of North and Middle Sugarloaf are a moderate hike with a big reward. The bluebird

Carey Kish asked me to tag along for a few hikes in New Hampshire while he did research for his next guidebook. He didn’t have to ask me twice and there is nothing I like better than showing off New Hampshire to my friends. His publisher is smart to have chosen him to write a guidebook pairing great New England hikes with craft breweries. Carey, otherwise known as Beerman on the Appalachian Trail, is also the compiler/editor of the AMC Maine Mountain Guide and author of AMC’s Best Day Hikes Along the Maine Coast. Carey is a talented outdoor writer and columnist; he recently had a piece in Outside Magazine. We tackled Mount Kearasarge from Winslow State Park. NH State Park is requiring online registration for day passes. We went up the Winslow Trail and down the Barlow Trail. It was tad cloudy but it was a good day. Then having lunch at the Flying Goose Brew Pub after our hike made the outing even better. The following day we went to Pisgah State Park in Winchester. I learned that Pisgah is our largest State Park with over 13,000 acres. The park offers trails for numerous activities beyond hiking including trails for mountain bikes, ATVs

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Safe To Read I was amazed to find out that some long-time readers have not read my column since this whole pandemic thingamajig started. One woman by Brendan Smith (who also gave Weirs Times Editor me permission to identify her as a woman) explained to me, when I accidentally ran into her at a local grocery store, that she had heard that I might not be taking the proper precautions before writing each column, so she wasn’t sure if it was safe to read them. It took me awhile to understand what she was saying as she kept ten feet away from me and was wearing a N95 mask and a face shield, but eventually the message got through. At first I thought that she was just an anomaly (no I did not ask her permission to call her an anomaly, just taking a chance here). I soon found out that it was more widespread than I had imagined. I was amazed to find out that there are government guidelines that newspaper columnists are supposed to follow in order to do their part to help keep the spread of the virus low. Who would have thought? It seems there is an 8-page, set of guidelines put out by the state that myself as well as all other columnists need to be aware of. Seems it is all part of the recently formed government agency called N.O.N.S.E.N.S.E. which stands for “New Orders for Newspapers So Everything Now Scares Everybody”. I had never heard of NONSENSE before. So, being a good citizen I called the New Hampshire NONSENSE phone number and explained to the woman that answered (I just guessed on the woman thing here, I’ll take my chances) that I am a weekly columnist and I had

no idea about NONSENSE and the NONSENSE guidelines. She explained that NONSENSE was put into operation about two months before since it was discovered that there is a one in ten million chance that Covid-19 might possibly be spread by newspaper columns. She did explain that no one really knows how, but until it can be completely disproven, we would all have to deal with NONSENSE for now. She explained that she would email me the guidelines for columnists and that I could also expect a visit from a NONSENSE agent who would randomly stop by to see if I am following all the NONSENSE guidelines. If I wasn’t, my column could be suspended for two weeks and I might be subjected to a NONSENSE fine. I wasn’t about to argue. Being a man (I’m sure of this) who is over sixty with a couple of underlying health conditions, I take my precautions in trying to avoid getting the virus. Still, this seemed a bit extreme, but I’d play along. When your dealing with the government, you don’t have much choice. Even though the NONSENSE guidelines are 8 pages long, only two pages explained what I needed to do when writing a column to keep readers safe. The other six pages were just a lot of nonsense about NONSENSE. First off, I have to wear a mask if I can’t keep six feet away from my laptop while writing a column. I need to sanitize the entire keyboard after every paragraph. I have to keep adjectives down to a minimum since there is a possibility they are super spreaders. Semicolons also may be dangerous, though the science is still out on that. Of course, sharing a column with other writers for editing purposes is strictly prohibited as one could not be sure who was properly following the guidelines. I showed the NONSENSE

guidelines to a friend of mine who refuses to believe anything about the virus. He thought they were nonsense. “I’m not worried about catching Covid-19 when I read yours or anyone else’s column,” he said. “In fact, after I read it I put it on my face and take deep breaths. I ain’t scared.” I have some strange friends. I have not contacted other columnists that I know to ask them if they are following the NONSENSE guidelines (mainly because I don’t know any). So, this morning I took the first steps in order to be a good columnist and follow the NONSENSE guidelines. I’ve washed my hands numerous times, put on my mask and sanitized the keyboard. I am also using a special six-foot long typing stick I created so I don’t get too close to my laptop. (I am also presently in negotiations to have these sticks mass produced for use by columnists worldwide.) I have even had a visit from a state inspector who determined, after watching me write this column, that I was safely following all of the NONSENSE rules. So, if you were reluctant to read this column, let me assure you that it is now safe. Feel at ease to turn to this page and start reading again. Enjoy…if you can. BrendanTSmith.com

BLM’s Perpetual Fake Outrage Cycle

by Michelle Malkin Syndicated Columnist

Here we go again: Manufacture. Rinse. Repeat. Everyone knows the cycle. Everyone knows it ends with false and incomplete narratives eventually being debunked by actual facts. Everyone knows that the racial mythmakers and political opportunists end up with fame, wealth and glory -- but never any criminal punishments or moral accountability. Everyone knows, yet on and on and on it

goes. Step 1: Spread out-of-context video clip of Black man subdued or shot by white cops across national media airwaves and social media platforms. Step 2: Riot. Step 3: Accuse law enforcement and America of “systemic racism,” decry police brutality and demand “justice” for fillin-the-blank “victim.” Step 4: Riot. Step 5. Enter Al Sharpton, Benjamin Crump, Black Lives Matter chief propagandist Shaun King, and the rest of the racial hoax crime brigade. Step 6: Persecute and prosecute involved police officers. Step 7: Burn, loot and maraud nationwide. Step 8: Demand more funding for “restorative justice,” “alternative” policing, sensitivity training and “anti-racism” programs. Step 9: Bury all evidence of justified police action while screaming, “Racism!” ever louder. Step 10: Lie in wait for the next opportunity to return to Step 1. I’ve been covering this self-destructive ritual in American life since the very beginning of my journalism career in 1992, when the Rodney King beating video led to the acquittal of four Los Angeles police department officers, which led to the L.A. riots (60 killed, 2,000 injured, $1 billion in damages, $700 million in federal aid), which led to a federal civil rights settlement for King worth $4 million and prison sentences for two of the cops despite their previous acquittals. Jacob Blake became the latest overnight cause celebre of the Black Lives Matter brigade. He’s black. The cops, captured on video shooting him in the back seven times after arriving at the scene of a domestic incident, were white. Like the cops in the Rodney King case, Kenosha, Wisconsin, officers were dealing with a caSee MALKIN on 28

Democrats Push Charges Of Racism For Purposes Of Convenience In June 2019, Sen. Kamala Harris, DCalif., tore into former Vice President Joe Biden in a Democratic primary debate. She openly suggested that he was a racist whose past political activity by Ben Shapiro would have kept a “litSyndicated Columnist tle girl” like her from attending integrated public school. About a year later, Biden selected Harris for his vice presidential candidate. It followed naturally that some intrepid reporter might ask Harris about why she had joined forces with such a historic bigot. So far, Harris has been asked that question twice. Stephen Colbert asked, obviously assuming that she had prepared an answer. She hadn’t. Instead, Harris broke into her now-famous Awkward Joker Cackle, saying with a laugh, “It was a debate!” Colbert quickly tried to laugh with her to alleviate the extraordinary tension -- and to back away from the unforced revelation that Harris is simply a political hack willing to leverage charges of racism for career gain. Now, political observers might figure that such a terrifying brush with unmasking might prompt Harris to think through the question. She still hasn’t. Over the weekend, ABC News’ Robin Roberts asked Harris the same question. And Harris’ answer was no better: “I think that that conversation is a distraction from what we need to accomplish right now and what we need to do.” Harris again confirmed that her allegations of racism against Biden were merely a tool in her arsenal -- a tool to be wielded when convenient and stored away for possible future use when not. Unfortunately, Harris isn’t the only political figure who sees charges of rac-

ism as a convenient weapon, rather than as serious allegations requiring actual evidence. Democratic politicians appear to have latched on to the simple joys of charging political opponents with racism at the drop of a hat. According to the Associated Press, Democrats have taken, for example, to charging those who mispronounce Harris’ first name with racism -- as though it is perfectly obvious that the emphasis in “Kamala” lies on the first syllable rather than the second. And it’s not merely that Democrats now levy frivolous racism charges with ease. Democrats are willing to jump -- without any evidence and to dire consequence -- to the conclusion that any incident involving black Americans is rife with racism. Thus, this week, when a black man named Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was shot by police officers and video leading up to the shooting was released, Democrats rushed to condemn the police, even while explicitly acknowledging that they didn’t have the facts. Biden released a statement with staggering irresponsibility: He called for an “immediate, full and transparent investigation” but openly stated that “the officers must be held accountable”; he claimed that America had woken up “yet again with grief and outrage that yet another black American is a victim of excessive force”; he called the shooting an “inflection point” and yet another symptom of “systemic racism.” Again, Biden had no access to the facts. But that didn’t stop him from levying charges of racism. It wasn’t just Biden. Gov. Tony Evers, D-Wis. -- whose state investigative system will be handling the case -- immediately announced, “While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or merSee SHAPIRO on 22

Trump’s Spending Last week, I tallied Joe Biden’s spending plans. This week, President Trump’s. Which presidential candidate will bankrupt America first? by John Stossel When Donald Syndicated Columnist T r u m p r a n f o r president, he promised “big league” spending cuts. Once in office, he again said he’d cut the budget, adding, “There’s a lot of fat in there.” There sure is. Since I was born, spending has

grown faster than inflation most every year. Then, President Obama, as Trump liked to out, “put more debt on than all other presidents of the United States combined!” It’s true. But then Trump increased the debt just as much. Now even more, with the COVID-19 spending. One of his first biggest increases was the $738 billion defense spending bill. Trump bragged that it was “an all-time record!” He said Democrats had “depleted” our fighting ability, so he “had” to “fix our military.”

“The ‘fix’ looks a whole lot like bloated defense spending,” says Pete Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union. “It’s more than our rivals around the world could even hope to spend.” Sepp’s organization has fought government spending for decades. Sadly, they’ve had little success. Now federal spending will grow even faster because: 1) The COVID-19 “stimulus” will grow. 2) Both political parties love spending your money. 3) Old people like me keep living longer. Sorry about that last one. But I,

rudely, decline to die. Soon, my generation’s Medicare and Social Security checks will crowd out everything else in the budget. (No, fellow geezers, we don’t just “get back what we put in.” We’ll get, on average, almost triple our FICA deductions.) Sadly, no presidential candidate expresses much interest in addressing that: Trump promises to “protect” Social Security. Biden says he’ll increase it! Trump was also eager to spend on special interests. He gave $16 billion to farmers and ranchers, $1.6 billion more to NASA and, despite governSee STOSSEL on 29

The Pandemic’s Political Haze Nearly six months into the Covid-19 pandemic, the United States remains mired in the nebulous haze of the “invisible enby John J. Metzler emy,” suffering Syndicated Columnist greatly both physically and emotionally. We have been battered and bruised economically and most of all psychologically. And all this in the midst of a contentious presidential election campaign which in itself has distorted the dangers and depth of the pandemic and somehow suggested that Covid’s wrath was uniquely focused on our shores. Let’s be clear, the Covid-19 vi-

rus remains a deadly and ongoing threat to the U.S. and the world. The mortality rates have been stunning as the USA has borne the pandemic’s brunt which started in China, spread into Europe, and only then reached our shores. The timeline illustrates a telling trial of deception, misperception, underestimation and then, full blown panic has been a sordid narrative. If this were a political thriller, most would argue the plot was too far fetched. A deadly Corona virus starts in Wuhan, China in late Autumn. The Chinese communist authorities go into classic coverup mode but Covid proves more viral than the CCP’s lies. The World Health Organization (WHO) learns of the threat, wants to act, but is

spoon fed disinformation about the extent and danger. Lunar New Year festivities serve as a transmission belt. In late January, the WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros while visiting Beijing was still assured that the virus is not a danger to transmit to humans. On February 24th , House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told tourists to enjoy Chinese New Year in San Francisco! In New York in early March the hapless Mayor Di Blasio was telling people go out and enjoy restaurants, Broadway shows, and life in the Metropolis. The week of March 9th, the tide of false optimism suddenly turned ugly; schools were shutting down “probably for a few weeks” and on Wednesday March 11th the WHO

declared a global health pandemic. Within the week the USA was largely locked down, the powerful American economy was put into an induced coma; fear, recriminations and fatalities became a feature of our life. The death toll stands at 182,000. President Trump stated, “When the China Virus hit, we launched the largest national mobilization since WWII. Invoking the Defense Production Act, we produced the world’s largest supply of ventilators.” But the pandemic remains a global health emergency. West European countries such as Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and France had very high fatality rates; as a perc e n t a g e See METZLER on 29

September Comes As Normal In 1902 Goings On Around The Area

by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

Here in the year 2020 people are talking about the “new normal” brought about by the onslaught of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Actually what is considered the norm around us changes quite frequently. Much that was considered the normal way of living is not the same as it was in my boyhood, and things have changed heaps since the September 6, 1902 Ashland Citizen I have been reading was printed. When was the last time you saw a surry with a canopy top and cloth upholstery for sale, cheap, or for trade for a good cow? Or bought some Devoe lead and zinc paint, guaranteed to last longer than the lead and oil type? Or seen a rattlesnake on Pike Hill in the west part of Plymouth? If today’s newspapers followed the example of the 1902 newspapermen and used smaller print they could print a lot more news, offer

Laconia Fair Ad from September 6, 1902 issue of Ashland Citizen. much more knowledge for each tree made into paper, and probably increase readership by including more names of local people in each issue of the paper. They could tell you who was visiting who, who in town was sick, and the date of the arrival of each new baby in town. In 1902 everyone was informed that Mrs. Lucinda H. Ellison of Plymouth had been granted a pension of $12 a month. I didn’t know about the longevity of poultry until I read this in the newspaper: “Cash paid for four new milch cows and three hundred year old hens at the George Caldon place, Plymouth.” To avoid any confusion the sentence could be meant to refer

to an undisclosed number of hens that were 300 years old, three hens that were a hundred years old each, or, the obvious, 300 hens that were a year old. Speaking of Plymouth, news about the upcoming Plymouth Fair, which had been running for over 50 years, was one of the important features of the September 6th paper. The current management was operating the Fair for the last time and were exerting themselves to make the 1902 event scheduled for September 16, 17, and 18, one of the best ever. “The field of horses” was predicted to be “unusually large and the show of live stock better than ever.” Readers were told

“The vaudeville show to be given on the stage in front of the grandstand will be worth the price of admission and is a show complete in itself, while the ‘Fans’ will find plenty to please them in a game of ball each day by crack clubs.” Another feature was a “ ‘Special Ticket’ good only to the party named on same to any part of the grounds and grand stand during the fair and allowing them to pass out and in at pleasure.” The cost for the special ticket was $1.00 while the regular admission fee was 35 cents for adults, 20 cents for children, and 25 cents for teams. Unlike this year of 2020 in 1902 the Fairs seemed to be plenteous. The Laconia Fair was held on September 9th, 10th, and 11th and was advertised as being the greatest fair of 1902. It claimed to have the best vaudeville show, the best horse show, the best ball games, and the largest number of distinguished men, including the Governor. Laconia’s fair also featured a balloon ascension, cannon parachute jump, and fireworks. Many people from Haverhill attended fairs at Bradford and Concord. And added to the Fair Month of September was the twenty-seventh annual Rochester Fair which See SMITH on 24

Vanier Hearing Center Opens in Lincoln A new state-of-theart hearing center opened at the Village Shops in Lincoln on August 3rd. The Vanier Hearing Center focuses on social distancing and a welcoming retail environment with the latest hearing aid technology. Owner Jason Vanier is the Chairman of the New Hampshire Board of Hearing Care Providers. He is nationally board certified and a New Hampshire State Board Licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist who brings eleven years of experience to the new venture. “It’s an interesting time. We have come to the realization that folks with even the slightest hearing im-

pairment are vulnerable in the mask-wearing era. They are unable to connect with visual dependencies such as reading lips,” said Vanier. The start-up features a custom-built sound booth with a comfortable egg chair that is reminiscent of the 1970s. “We are trying to get away from the old-school clinical vibe and get into this new era of welcoming people to an open setting and offering transparent pricing for all hearing aids,” noted Vanier. The owner continued, “I decided that I wanted to take a very different approach and make sure that we could help everyone so nobody went away without getting some sort of care for their hearing needs. Insurance can be difficult and there’s a solution for

Jason Vanier owner of The Vanier Hearing Center which opened recently in Lincoln, NH. everyone regardless of their budget. That’s the right way to do it”. According to Vanier,

the latest hearing devices deliver Bluetooth technology, rechargeable batteries and self-

learning and adaptive options. He said, “People with hearing problems historically don’t

do well on the phone or hearing television. Now with Blue-tooth connectivity, they are getting direct to ear streaming.” Self-hearing devices can identify noisy environments and distinguish between speech and background noise, said Vanier. Noice cancellation technology is used to suppress the background and can be controlled or operated independently. In addition to providing free hearing screenings, the Vanier Hearing Center also offers a mobile service that travels in the white mountains part of New Hampshire. The center is open Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm.

New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

29 EAST GILFORD EAST DRIVE, GILFORD NH

Preparing For The Fall Season by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

There have been a few mornings recently that have felt an awful lot like fall. Cool temperatures, low humidity, the occasional falling leaf. The bird world is following suit in New England, ever so slowly. I’ve seen a few passing warblers in the backyard over the past few weeks and the hummingbirds are feeding with an added urgency to fatten up for their journey south. I’m not trying to rush the end of summer and we still have a few weeks until it is officially over. The end of August and beginning of September is a fun transition time in the bird and nature world. A walk through a New England meadow this time of year yields butterflies, dragonflies and all sorts of crazy-looking insects that make you think of summer. Then, you notice the goldenrod in bloom and a hawk soaring overhead reminiscent of fall. The fall migration starts as early as July when young shorebirds work their way southward along the New England coast. It really begins in earnest in the middle of September when the hawk migration gains a head of steam. September is when a visit to a hawk migration hot spot -- such as Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory (Miller State

Bald eagles, like this immature eagle, are frequently seen on hawk watches. Park) in Peterborough -- may yield thousands of broad-winged hawks in a single day. Wind and atmospheric conditions need to be right for those banner days, so check out the hawk watch locations’ websites for updates. The fall warbler and songbird migration has started as a trickle. It, too, will gain steam as the weeks progress. An ovenbird and blackand-white warbler passed through my yard the other day. Late September and early October will be the prime time to see these little birds pass through. By November, it slows considerably. Kinglets, particularly ruby-crowned kinglets, seem to linger a bit longer than most other birds. As I mentioned previously, hummingbirds are gearing up for their

trip south. September will see many of these little dynamos passing through New England. By October, most of them will be gone, not to be seen again in our region until next spring. The odd hummingbird may pass through a little later than the rest and, of course, there is always the possibility of a different species of hummingbird being seen into winter. The ruby-throated hummingbird is the only species of hummingbird to regularly occur east of the Mississippi River. In fall and winter, species such as rufous or black-chinned occasionally show up in New England. When to bring in feeders is a personal choice, but many people choose to keep their hummingbird feeders up well into winter to help out any stragglers.

Last week I wrote about the thrill homeowners and birdwatchers get when a bird eats seeds from a flower patch in the yard. I focused on goldfinches on coneflowers, but late fall brings kinglets to dead sedum heads. Sedum is a hardy perennial and the heads last well into winter, offering a rare food source for birds. COVID-19 has made this an unusual summer, to say the least, but it is still summer nonetheless. Enjoy what is left of it and get prepared for the exciting fall season in the bird world. Last week in this column, we departed from the usual beer review info in favor of summer thirst quenchers. Building on that principle, I wanted to alert you to two more trending drinks that are very popular with ‘Hard’ imbibing crowd. Now, we will get back to beer drinking soon, I promise. But you need to know about these two types of refreshing quenchers to be well versed in drinking just more than tap water. The spiked seltzer market is absolutely through the roof with product offerings. But I wanted to make sure you knew about the following two drink groups that are flying off the shelves; hard coffee and spiked coconut water + vodka or rum. The term Hard is used to describe that there is alcohol content within. You’ve more than likely heard of products such as Mike’s Hard Lemonade or hard cider like Angry Orchard and so on. The addition of new emerging markets in hard coffee makes for interesting alternatives.

Even Pabst Blue Ribbon released a hard coffee recently. Because coffee is important in the early hours of each work day to many people (look at Duncan Donuts drivethroughs any morning), I find it interesting that an alcohol version of coffee is popular. It’s like going both ways at once; going up in energy and down or relaxed

due to a 5% ABV. None the less, the market is there and increasing. Twelve 5’s Rebel Hard Coffee is especially popular. It is available in four flavors; Mocha Latte, Vanilla Latte, Cold Brew and the seasonal favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte. All are between 4.2 and 5% ABV, are rich in natural flavors and made with 100% Arabica cof-

fee. You’ll find them tasty and irresistible when you’re looking for something different to try. Browse their offerings and recipes for tasty Rebel mixed drinks at rebelhardcoffee.com The other trending drink is from an Australian company known as CoCo. They use real coconut water, a bit of sparkling water and natural flavors along with either Triple-Distilled Vodka or White Caribbean Rum. Both are crystal clear, deliciously light and 5% ABV. Look over their energetic website; enjoycoco.com Both of these fun beverages fit the end of summer activities and are a great way to have refreshing flavors on the move. You can find them at Case-n-Keg in Meredith as well as other fine beverage providers. Get yours and get active out there!

NBA Stars Miss The Mark worked to build. So seeing the NBA (and other organizations, including the Red Sox) embracing BLM just ruin pro sports for some of us. At least for now. As fans can’t presently go to games anyway, it’s hard to measure their disaffection with misguided stars. But check out the TV ratings. Still, there’s still plenty of great sports stuff to get excited about, aside from the NBA and the last place Red Sox. Last week’s Weirs Times had a front page story on Benaiah Hanson, a See MOFFETT on 22

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Last week NBA playoff games were postponed because players wanted to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of a non-fatal police shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Video of the incident and the seven shots fired at Jacob Blake understandably incited people already weary of unnecessary violence. L. A. Laker superstar LeBron James claimed that because of all the firearms in America, “We think you’re hunting us.” (What are the chances that one might find any firearms at one of LeBron’s palatial estates?) “We’re the ones getting killed out there,” thundered L.A. Clippers Coach Doc Rivers. But it’s not quite that simple. Numerous police officers have also been injured and killed over the past year. Countless residents of minority neighborhoods have been killed, wounded and terrorized by criminal and gang violence, but for some reason the NBA stars only protest police over-reach. “Systemic racism” is the new mantra by which to say that our country is messed up,

LeBron James of the L.A. Lakers. ergo its institutions and citizens (us!) are messed up. But many think that the root causes of urban dystopia relate more to family breakdown and absent fathers as opposed to mean cops or ubiquitous racism. But NBA stars don’t have the moral courage to take a stand where it might make a difference. Does anyone else see the irony of NBA stars—multi-millionaires who have been cheered on and made wealthy by fans of all colors—protesting against law enforcement people who risk their lives to try to avert total anarchy in some really dangerous places populated largely by minorities? And consider the reactions of the LeBrons of the world when a Houston Rocket as-

sistant general manager made a supportive tweet concerning Hong Kong demonstrators trying to maintain some imperiled freedoms in the face of Chinese Communist thuggery and oppression. When the Chinese threatened to abrogate financial deals with the NBA, its stars were quick to side with the Communist thugs, even calling for the Rocket official to be suspended or fired and to relinquish his First Amendment rights. I’m with those who say “All Lives Matter,” which sadly is an anathema to the “Black Lives Matter” people. BLM has been shown to be influenced by and led by Marxists and radicals hostile to an America that many generations of all races have

Lynne is just the right stuff we need to send to Washington. I respectfully request all Veterans, Law enforcement, first responders, Doctors, Nurses and hard-working families in Dist. 02 in joining me in supporting Lynne Blankenbecker (R) for Congress in the Sept. 8th primary. Employed in the scientific fields and as a life-long volunteer in community and emergency medical services I will work with all who wishes to resolve the issues in post COVID-19 New Hampshire and to continue our district’s historical decorum of refraining from the ongoing political bashing and rhetoric that other elected officials have continued to bring to Concord. There are many contested seats so most important is to first research the candidates,

reach out and learn who they are, their political ideology, and personal and political temperament. There are many surveys available of the candidates’ stands, views, and plans in addressing issues and policies of our state. CitizenCount, Ballotpedia, NH Firearms Coalition, and ReOpenNH have published the candidates replies. I hope to meet and speak with you in the near future. Thank you.

A variety of loops can be made using the High Ridge Trail, one of the many the old Lucknow Estate’s carriage roads, to reach other Ossipee peaks including Mount Shaw. PATENAUDE from 19 tours should continue further up the road just past the snack bar. We won the lottery with the weather again. There were many people walking around Shannon Pond and the shorter lower trails. We headed up the Mount Roberts Trail past the pasture and it was sad to see the stables empty this summer. This is my favorite Ossipee Mountain because there is a view around every turn and the trail never gets too steep. From Shannon Pond to the top of Mt. Roberts is just 2.6 miles. We leapedfrogged several times with a pair of college boys that would pass us and then stop to wait for their mother. From the trail there were good views of Mount Shaw and the other peaks in the estate. From the summit there are more views all the way to the White Mountains. PATENAUDE from 20 and Mount Washington too. We had the summit to ourselves for a short while before the boys arrived with their mother. After studying the map Carey stuck with his plan to make a loop by continuing on the estate’s old carriage roads, the High Ridge Trail and going down the Faraway Mountain Trail to make a 8.7 mile loop. I had gone that way the last time I was here so I decided to continue on the ridge and descend the Oak Ridge Cut-Off. It was a little longer but I wasn’t stopping to take notes. I beat Carey back to our cars by a few minutes. I think the fact that the snack bar sold ice cold beverages helped make Mount Roberts Carey’s favorite Ossipee Mountain too. Carey continues his research with a few

more hikes in New Hampshire before heading to Vermont to find more of the best beer hikes in New England. Have Fun.

And the narrative has been set: The shooting was unjustified, and racist at that. No evidence has been presented; none need be. And if the facts don’t match the accusations, the facts will be put aside. Harris herself has continued to push the absolute lie, for example, that Michael Brown was murdered in Ferguson, Missouri, an allegation firmly rebutted by former President Obama’s Department of Justice. Fealty to the narrative is the sole qualifier for power in Democratic circles. Will any of this alleviate racism? Of course not. But it’s not

designed to. It’s designed to achieve and attain power. And, so far, the strategy seems to be working. Another ad from the Saturday, September 6 issue of The Ashland Citizen. SMITH from 9 was held on September 23, 24, 25, and 26. The newspaper said,“Among the attractions is Oliver W., the marvelous trotting ostrich- the only feature of its kind in the world...”

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, September 3, 2020 — SMITH from 24 ensilage.” Farmers were finding grass in various places. In Meredith Center J.F. Smith had the “Oakland Cemetery” grass and Alma Williams had the grass on the F.P. Smith lot. Edwin Burbank and his wife moved to Groton Hollow where he was going to cut some grass for C.A. Holden. Back in 1902 the town of Plymouth had a tree warden by the name of E. Harvey Edmonds. What does a tree warden do? Well, tree warden Edmonds marked 700 shade trees as belonging to the town by attaching a state tag to each tree. The tag was said to have looked like a nail with “NH” on the seveneighth inch head. One was driven into each tree a few feet from the ground. All of the 700 trees were outside of the village limits but belonged to the town. I wonder if any of the marked trees still stand today. Two September happenings that were normal in 1902 and are still considered normal, though the logistics have greatly changed, were the departure from New Hampshire of “summer people” and the commencement of schools. Schools begin the year by commencing and end the year with commencement exercises for those who graduate to begin a new phase of their lives. So one item of news was that “owing to the exodus of summer travel from the mountain region Monday, the Pemigewasset House restaurant cared for more people that day than ever was cared for before since the history of the hotel. The south bound White Mountain Express consisted of sixteen cars and was drawn by two locomotives.” Another sign of the summer folk leaving

into fingerlings with the feeling that in stocking lakes and streams “a hundred fingerlings will probably bring better results than a thousand small fry.” Did you ever wonder where the expression “small fry” came from? Laconia and Plymouth were both hoping to have one of the hatcheries with Colebrook probably having the other one. So that is just some of the news from The Ashland Citizen from Saturday, September 6, 1902. I haven’t until now mentioned the account of the visit to the state of President Theodore Roosevelt and all the local people who went to the Weirs to see him, or other national and

international news and much more local stuff in the eight page newspaper.

8. Mrs. Mertie Coffin was teaching in East Rumney and in North Ashland Miss P. Warren was the teacher. MALKIN from 6 reer criminal who was young, strong and troubled. Blake’s name, age and neighborhood match court records of a Jacob Blake who had an outstanding warrant for misdemeanor criminal trespass, felony third-degree sexual assault and misdemeanor disorderly assault associated with domestic abuse charges. Like the cops in the Rodney King case, Kenosha cops were confronted with a suspect who brazenly resisted arrest. At least four officers can be seen trying to subdue him. Blake continues to evade arrest and climb into his vehicle, where his children were. At least seven shots rang out.

The rest is a re-re-rere-re-repeat of social justice history. “Hands up, don’t shoot” was the foundational lie of the Michael Brown fatal cop encounter, as even the Obama Justice Department was forced to acknowledge. The primary perpetrator of that deception? Benjamin Crump. The Trayvon Martin hoax, as exposed by investigative documentarian Joel Gilbert, was built on an astonishing key prosecution witness switch-a-roo involving Martin’s real girlfriend, Brittany Diamond Eugene (who was on the phone with Martin before he assaulted George Zimmerman) and a ridiculous impos-

tor, Rachael Jeantel, who was barely literate and apparently manipulated into coached testimony by none other than Benjamin Crump. Three months after the death of George Floyd in Minnesota, we now know this career criminal -- who robbed and beat a pregnant woman in a brutal home invasion -- refused to comply with police officers from initial contact. He acted erratically, invoked common “please don’t shoot me” and “I can’t breathe” excuses before was put on the ground, lied about being claustrophobic and was told by one of his own passengers to stop resisting. We now also

know that officers believed Floyd was on drugs and swallowed a fatal overdose of fentanyl, compounding his preexisting heart conditions and positive COVID results. Benjamin Crump, who filed multimilliondollar lawsuits against the city of Minneapolis on behalf of the Floyd family last month, is now also the lawyer for Jacob Blake. BLM leaders say what’s left of Kenosha after the weekend’s riots will burn to the ground unless cops are fired and arrested. Al Sharpton, Shaun King, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary

Clinton, LeBron James, NASCAR race agitator Bubba (Fake Noose) Wallace, Cardi B and Demi Lovato all immediately piled on as well, demanding “justice” and condemning police instead of the perps. I’m reminded of what a black activist in Phoenix confessed to a local news station in 2015 upon seeing what it’s like to be an officer’s shoes. Jarrett Maupin ended up being shot point-blank by one suspect and shooting another in the chest when both ignored his orders in life-or-death use-of-force scenarios. Maupin’s takeaway? “I didn’t understand how important compliance was, but after going through this,

yeah, my attitude has changed. This is all unfolding in ten to fifteen seconds. People need to comply with the orders of law enforcement officers for their own safety.” That is the plain, simple truth. All else is racial extortion and deceit. How to save America and end this vicious cycle of smoke, mirrors and ashes? Stop the lies. Michelle Malkin’s email address is MichelleMalkinInvestigates@ protonmail.com. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, September 3, 2020 — STOSSEL from 7 ment’s horrible track record at “picking winners,” he tried loaning $765 million to Kodak Pharmaceuticals. After the pandemic hit, Trump joined Democrats in authorizing $6.2 trillion in new spending Signing that, Trump joked: “I’ve never signed anything with a “T” on it. I don’t know if I can handle this one!” The politicians standing behind him laughed. But it’s not funny. Now Democrats want to add even more spending. Trump at least made some cuts, prepandemic. Sepp acknowledges that he made “important progress in reducing overhead (and) personnel costs.” He also cut the budget of his own office, plus the Departments of Labor, Education and State. Good! The State Department is bloated with 60 subdepartments, and its spending had increased at triple the rate inflation. Still, media pundits whined about every cut. On CNN, one “expert” called the cuts to the State Department “insanity.” When Trump proposed other cuts, or just slowing the growth of government, Congress wouldn’t let him. Trump’s 2021 budget would still have increased spending by $39 billion. Rep. Chuck Schumer rejected that, calling it “a blueprint for destroying America!” To sum up: What’s Trump’s total budget impact been? Spending is up by more than $1 trillion a year. The national debt is over $26 trillion. “Deficits and debt destroy economic growth,” says Sepp. “Nobody’s talking

about this stuff. You must be frustrated,” I say. “Very,” he responds. “After 51 years as an organization, to see this kind of attitude and carelessness...” When it comes to increasing spending, who is worse, Trump or Biden? “Biden,” replies Sepp, because he promises $1.2 trillion a year in new spending. “We’re already trillions in the hole. He’s spending money out of an empty pocket!” And Biden is favored to win. Of course, some argue that when it comes to Republicats and Democans spending your and your grandkids’ money, it doesn’t matter who wins. “Washington just seems to grow at the expense of everyone else, no matter who is in power,” concludes Sepp. So, next week, I’ll report on an alternative to Biden and Trump. METZLER from 7 of their populations, higher than the USA. France has 40,000 deaths from a population of 65 million. The United Kingdom has lost 41,000 from 68 million people. France again is seeing an exponential rise in cases. Covid may be mutating into a more spreadable but less deadly virus. It’s wrath has hit countries as diverse as Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa. While the U.S. appears to have now controlled the scourge of Covid, through massive testing, the histrionics of the mainstream Media still plays the narrative that somehow the Trump Administration did not know, care, or was capable handling this once in a century pandemic. Clearly mistakes were made but many of those in timing came from fuzzy early reports from the WHO and the CDC. Health assessments were soothed by the leading virus expert Dr. Anthony Fauci who stated on February 29th that visiting malls, movies and gyms “were ok.” The perpetual po-

litical blame game, put on steroids of social media and fanned by woke denizens sets the tone for an election sounding like a simple schoolyard blame game. New York state has 33,000 fatalities, the highest in the nation. New York City has borne the brunt of the deaths and the economic downturn. A once vibrant and pulsating city is now only hesitatingly emerging from the lockdown to slowdown. Many business remain closed; some victims of the widespread but largely underreported June looting. Restaurants, the lifeblood of small business, remain severely restricted, hampered by blunt one size fits all regulations. Distressingly many of the talismans of Manhattan’s Upper East Side are either closed or on the verge. Largely unreported are the large numbers of moving trucks found on Park Avenue and other upscale places. The writing is on the wall; high taxes, the return of lawlessness, and feel of the 1970’s has returned to the Big Apple. Covid was the tipping point.
