—EDITORIAL— Promises Made, Promises Kept

RE-ELECT PRESIDENT TRUMP In full disclosure: I’m a lifelong Republican and for over 50 plus years I have voted for good Republicans who I believe will serve our hard-working men and women of New Hampshire better than the progressive liberal Democrats by building on the values of low taxes and limited government. I was asked to meet with Candidate Donald Trump on Dec. 15, 2015 at a rally in Waterville Valley, as he wanted to sign my “Presidential Pledge,” which he did. Tom Thomson’s grandson, Some of my friends Jaden Thomson with then asked me how I could vote for Donald Trump candidate Donald Trump in and my answer was 2015 when Trump signed the always the same; I bePresidential Pledge. lieved what he promised the voters, if elected, he would deliver on; particularly his promise to put forth names of Conservative Constitutionalist nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. We now know he kept his promise by nominating two excellent candidates, Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh and as I write this, President Trump has put forth another excellent choice in Amy Coney Barrett to fill the third open position on the Supreme Court during his term. As we know in Presidential See THOMSON on 14 by Tom Thomson Orford, NH.

Snow Much Fun! by Amy Patenaude Outdoor/Ski Columnist

Getting ski-able snow in October is not that unusual. Most years in October there has been fast grass in our yard with just enough white stuff so

we could kick and glide a little before the sun quickly melted it away. But this snowstorm was unusual! It was unusual because the snow was ski-able for two days, not just one morning. There was also a lot of snow;

from the valley floor to the top of the mountains the depth ranged from 3 inches to a foot. Saturday we could barely believe our eyes. Charlie and I pulled our old no-wax skis out of the basement and dug our See PATENAUDE on 28

What Are You Really Voting For? To The Editor: I don’t think that anyone with a lick of sense believes that, if elected, a person in Joe Biden’s condition will serve even a year, let alone a full term. That’s right, I believe that you would really be electing an otherwise unelectable, amoral, political opportunist who has repeatedly been characterized as the most liberal member of the United States Senate and who seems to be trying to impersonate an African-American (Parents are Jamaican and East Indian), Kamala Harris. I believe that Socialism and other repressive forms of government require that the people be sufficiently frightened and feel dependent upon the government to protect them from exaggerated boogeymen like “Climate Change” and “Covid-19”. Frightened people are easier to control and willing to give up freedoms that they would otherwise fiercely protect. I think that Covid-19, although a real health concern, has been used to create the type of situation in which Democrats seem to thrive and President Trump’s accomplishment are likely to be diminished. I don’t think it is a coincidence that Covid-19, originated in a totalitarian state like China. I believe that, even if manmade “Climate Change” is real, nothing that governments could do, at a significant cost to your wealth and your free-

dom, would make a meaningful difference. Yes, that is the elephant in the room. The climate will always change and there is little, if anything, that can be done about it. I think that it has always been a rather grandiose notion that man can control the weather to any significant degree. I think a good case can be made that, our entire Constitution is predicated on the belief that Government is a necessary evil, to be restrained and minimized as much as possible. Democrats, it seems to me, want government to be the most important and controlling thing in your life and, to that end, attempt to diminish the importance of family, religion, personal responsibility and morality. Agree or disagree, but please consider these issues, when you decide who to vote for. Russell B. Cumbee Franconia, NH.

Lust For Power Knows No Limits

To The Editor: Both Biden and Harris have repeatedly refused to answer the direct question of whether they intend to pack the Supreme Court if they win Nov. 3rd. In refusing to answer, they’re telling all of us, that’s Exactly what they intend to do. Biden has doubled down by stating we don’t deserve to know what he intends to do. So, we have no right to know what a Biden administration

intends to do to our country, we should just shut up and vote for him? At Gettysburg, Lincoln spoke of government of the people, by the people, for the people. The Harris/Biden ticket is clearly devoted to government of the Democrats, by the Democrats, for the Democrats. This tells us all that this election is not about just picking a President, but about the Democrats’ endless lust for power, over us, the people. The Declaration of Independence states: “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” How can consent be given, when we don’t know to what we are consenting? This Democrat ticket is telling us every day that this election is not about representing we the people, but about cementing their control over our government by any means possible. We cannot sit idly by on Nov. 3rd and let this happen. Vote Republican and save our country, save our Constitution and make it known you do not consent to government by secrecy. David Strang Gilmanton, NH.

Town Hall Bias To the Editor: Thursday’s Presidential Candidate Town Halls (October 15th) revealed extensive media bias and a contrast of old plans and old promises versus rapid accomplishments. See MAILBOAT on 33

C of New original towns Hampshire, Portsmouth, Exeter, and Dover still had laws with more limits on voting than today, but were not quite as strict as Hampton’s. Emphasis was put on the freeman in Massachusetts towns as being one who was a citizen and could vote. To be considered a freeman one had to attend church services. Portsmouth, Dover, and Exeter did not require the men to attend church in order to vote. If you were an eligible voter in Hampton, New Hampshire during the mid-1600’s you would have probably cast your votes with corn and beans. A Colonial Act in the year 1643 stated:“It is Ordered by this Court and the Authority thereof, that for the yearly chusing of Assistants, the Freemen shall use Indian Corn and Beans, the Indian Corn to manifest Election, the Beans contrary; and if any free man shall put in more than one Indian Corn or Bean, for the choice or refusal of any publick Officer, he shall forfeit for every such offence, ten pounds, and that any man that is not free, or hath not liberty of voting, putting in any vote, shall forfeit the like sum of ten pounds.” Hampton was considered a part of Massachusetts until 1679, and as such was governed by Puritan laws. Millyard Walking Tour With John Clayton

The Gallery at WREN Explores The Dynamics of Relationships The Gallery at WREN at 2013 Main Street, Bethlehem, NH., opens Gathering, a new exhibition featuring the work of potter Sarah Burns and artist Gretchen Woodman. Gathering explores the dynamic relationships we have between both objects and other living beings. The combination of the 3-dimensional works of Burns and Woodman’s animal-inspired drawings and paintings allows viewers to explore and reflect on how we integrate and utilize the bonds that relationships create. The exhibition opens on October 30th and goes to November 30th. The Gallery at WREN is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11am – 5pm, and closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

On Saturday, November 7, the Millyard Museum in Manchester will host Millyard Walking Tour with John Clayton, which will take participants through the Amoskeag Millyard. “The Amoskeag Millyard is a mile of brick mill buildings that housed the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, a behemoth of American industry from 1831-1936,” explained John Clayton, executive director of Millyard Museum and Manchester Historic Association. The tour will provide unique insight into Manchester itself. Preregistration is required for the 90-minute tours (10 a.m. or 1 p.m.), which will be limited to 30 guests (masks required) due to COVID-19. Tickets are $10 for MHA members and $15 for the general public. To learn more, or purchase tickets, visit manchesterhistoric.org. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

My Story This is my last column before Election Day. I have been running for governor as the Flatlander Party candidate since 2000. by Brendan Smith People often Weirs Times Editor ask me how the Flatlander Party started and that takes up a lot of my time on the campaign trail when I could be doing more important things like bothering people at local diners while they are trying to eat a hot breakfast. So, here is the story, so you’ll stop asking. A few of us transplanted Flatlanders were in my basement one night back at the turn of the century. We had all drank a few too many beers and we were getting worked up over the current state of things in New Hampshire government. I started ranting and raving about how many of us Flatlanders who had moved to New Hampshire from states like New York and Massachusetts had come here because we liked the fact that New Hampshire was a lot less restrictive, and cheaper, then where we had come from. Low taxes and more personal freedoms were the attraction. Unfortunately, there were more than a few other Flatlanders who moved here and wanted to change things to be more like where they came from, and a lot of them were getting elected and slowly bringing this about. So, after a few minutes of a beer fueled tirade, I ramped up the crowd in my basement and declared we should start the Flatlander Party to try to steer things back the right way. The whole thing carried to a frenzied climax of drunken shouting and cheering as everyone hoisted me on their shoulders and carried me out into the street to celebrate the creation

of The new Political Party. On the way out of the basement through the bulkhead, I forgot to lower my head and I banged it. (I still carry that dent in my skull today). We all kind of forgot about that night, suffering from our hangovers the next morning and none of us mentioned it for a while. It was a couple of weeks later that my friend Vinnie, who was originally from New Jersey, told us that he had gone through the motions of actually registering the Flatlander Party as an official party in New Hampshire. (Still not sure how he accomplished that, but he did.) We were all a bit surprised, but we decided to go ahead with it. Now we just needed a candidate to run. It seems my drunken rant was remembered by the other participants that night and it was decided that I would be the perfect candidate. (The vote was ten to one.) Was I really the best choice? Would I be able to represent the “Good” Flatlander contingent in the state fairly? Would I look good on a campaign poster? The answers were yes, yes and nothing a little Photoshopping couldn’t fix. We even came up with what we thought was the perfect slogan at the time: “We Came, We Saw, We Don’t Want To Change A Damn Thing.” Even though we didn’t want to change anything, we realized we still needed a platform to run on and we came up with some frivolous ideas like seeing to it that there was more New York Style pizza available in New Hampshire and that some inept Flatlanders, like myself, would have to go through a five-day waiting period before they were allowed to purchase tools. (Ten days if they had electric cords.) Soon we realized that there was only one issue that was important, and it was keeping New Hampshire the way it was.

29 EAST GILFORD EAST DRIVE, GILFORD NH

Even though I campaigned vigorously (whatever that means) and I looked pretty good on campaign posters even without Photoshop, I got about twenty votes that first year (mostly those who selected me to run… and their wives). Still, the Flatlander Party grew over the years and I continued to be the candidate. My vote tallies also grew and last election I believe I received just under one hundred write-in votes. (It’s nice to believe in things.) I have met a lot of resistance over the years from FINOs (Flatlanders in Name Only) who have moved here to change things. They’ve used many tactics to try and get me out of the picture. (The great Town Dump riots are still a sore subject.) I’ve done my best to hang on. Things have changed dramatically in New Hampshire over the last twenty years. The FINOs have made a lot of headway. Sneaking in new taxes and fees and restrictive laws, they are starting to win. Our great state motto may soon read: “Live Kind Of Free And Then Die.” So, in the spirit of that ragtag bunch of Flatlanders who gathered in my basement twenty years ago, I am running again to keep our hopes and dreams alive. Will I win? Probably not, but I won’t give up. I would appreciate your writein vote. But if you can’t do that, at the very least, don’t give it to a FINO. So, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. The Disunited States Of Oppression Is there any clearer sign of how privileged a society is than the disproportionate amount of time that society spends guilting citizens over how privileged they are? I’ll never forget the first time I encountered “critical race theory” and its overbearing adherents at my alma mater, Oberlin College, in the 1990s. Multicultural studies by Michelle Malkin were all the rage. Higher education officials had torpedoed Western civilization curricuSyndicated Columnist lum requirements at prestigious universities nationwide. The ululations of the aggrieved reached a fever pitch as anti-white extremists demanded separate academic departments, dorms, graduation ceremonies and deans in the name of justice and equality. The entire spectacle was as self-indulgent as it was comical. Spoiled white limousine liberals’ children lectured me -- a child of Filipino immigrants who came from a Third World country colonized by the Spanish, overtaken by Americans and occupied by the Japanese -- for thinking and acting “white” because I opposed race-based affirmative action policies. A miserable feminist student castigated me for using the patriarchal term “exploit” (as in “exploiting an opportunity.”) Wealthy minority progressives -- cloistered in their intolerant “safe spaces” on a campus full of entitled brats whose parents forked over $40,000 a year in tuition -- whined about being systemically oppressed. The whiners whined all their way through their senior theses to secure their worthless degrees. A large portion of the whiners went on to graduate schools in advanced griping and grousing -- and are now ensconced in the ivory tower of critical race theory babble, subsidized by tax dollars at public colleges and universities, venting from on high about how hopelessly downtrodden they are at the hands of the oppressors paying their cushy salaries. This toxic resentment has metastasized in academia and spread to the bowels of the federal bureaucracy. Last month, after Discovery Institute scholar Christopher Rufo sounded the alarm with a series of whistleblower reports in the Treasury and Justice Departments, the Trump administration belatedly moved to crack down on “diversity” training sessions that perpetuate the idea that America is an inherently racist and white supremacist nation. But far more troubling is the trickledown of racist anti-racism into K-12 education across the heartland. Media Officially Becomes Communications Dept. for Joe Biden This week, the New York Post published a bombshell story. Hunter Biden’s laptop was apparently given to a computer repairman in Delaware, and a copy of the hard drive was turned over by Ben Shapiro to the Post. The Post Syndicated Columnist found several alarming emails. The first was a communique from a Ukrainian businessman from the natural gas company Burisma -- the same company from which Hunter Biden would gain a reported $50,000-per-month salary as a board member, despite knowing nothing about Ukraine or natural gas. The communique contained the businessman’s thanks to Hunter for brokering a meeting with Joe Biden. This was mildly damning, considering that Joe had blithely informed the world that he knew nothing of his ne’er-dowell son’s foreign activities. What was more damning was an email thread that appeared to concern proposed compensation packages from the now-defunct CEFC China Energy Co. That thread identified Hunter as “Chair/Vice Chair depending on agreement with CEFC,” with a proposed equity split of “20” for “H” (presumably Hunter) and “10 held by H for the big guy.” A Fox News source privy to the thread confirmed that the “big guy” was Joe Biden. An apparent text from Hunter to one of his children contained this tantalizing suggestion: “(U)nlike Pop, I won’t make you give me half your salary.” All of this would, in a normal world, prompt the media to ask Biden about the emails. Instead, the media have halfheartedly questioned Biden, who has promptly dismissed all questions, calling them a “smear campaign” and even suggesting that a CBS reporter was biased

against him. The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman was ripped up and down for even tweeting a link to the Post story; Politico’s Jake Sherman abjectly apologized for having tweeted the story. Other media members have overtly made the case that the story shouldn’t be taken seriously. NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell reported that the email scandal could be Russian disinformation; Politico reported that 50 former intelligence officials posited that the story was indeed Russian disinformation. In this, they followed the lead of Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who claimed, without evidence, that the Biden story was a Russian dirty trick -- despite the fact that director of national intelligence John Ratcliffe openly denied such speculation. Meanwhile, Biden has deployed his campaign surrogates to television to insist that the reports are “unconfirmed.” Not one surrogate denied that the emails were authentic or bothered to explain them. But Biden hasn’t had to explain. His protectors aren’t relegated to the media. They also encompass the Big Tech heads, who quickly cracked down on dissemination of the Post story itself. Twitter banned tweeting of the link and suspended accounts that tried to spread it, including that of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. Facebook announced that even though the story hadn’t been fact-checked or found to be false, the company would suppress its reach in anticipation of such factchecking. There is no doubt that Big Tech’s decision was political -- or that the media’s hesitancy to cover the Biden allegations is similarly political. Both Big Tech and the media, staffed thoroughly with Democrats, are gun-shy about the prospect of turning the election toward President Donald Trump. If they err, they would far rather err on See SHAPIRO on 36

Bet The Election Donald Trump will probably lose the election. As I write, The Economist says he has only an 8% chance of winning. Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight, by John Stossel which came closSyndicated Columnist est to predicting Trump’s win in 2016 and has the best track record among modelers, gives Trump just a 12% chance. But people who “put money where their mouths are” give Trump a better chance: 37%. That’s according to ElectionBet-

tingOdds.com, the website I created with Maxim Lott. It tracks multiple betting sites around the world. Though 61%-37% seems like a giant lead for Joe Biden, 37% means Trump is likely to win one-third of the time. Four years ago, most bettors were wrong about Trump and Brexit. I assume they learned from that and adjusted their 2020 bets. But since bettors were wrong in 2016, why trust betting odds now? Because betting is a better predictor than polls, pundits, statistical models and everything else. ElectionBettingOdds.com has tracked hundreds of races. When

bettors think a candidate has a 37% chance -- they really do win roughly that often. A research scientist at Amazon concluded that in the last presidential election, ElectionBettingOdds. com beat all other existing public prediction models except for Nate Silver’s polls-plus model. Silver says: “Betting markets are populated by people with a sophomoric knowledge of politics... Traders are emotionally invested in political outcomes.” Also, “Markets (are) not super liquid... way different than sports where you have a much more sophisticated player base and more liquidity.

But our site takes odds from betting sites in Europe, the U.S. and a cryptocurrency-based exchange. More than $200 million has been bet. As Silver says in his excellent book, “The Signal and the Noise,” “A lot of smart people have failed miserably when they thought they could beat the market.” Overall, bettors have the best track record. Last election, The New York Times’ “expert model” had Hillary Clinton ahead 85% to 15%. The Princeton Election Consortium gave Clinton a 99% chance. (Now they give Biden 98.2%.) See STOSSEL on 37

The Foreign Policy Debate That Wasn’t But Success That Was Turn down the shouting, tone down the hype and tune in for a serious moment on U.S. foreign policy. In the closing stages of the seemingly by John J. Metzler perpetual U.S. Syndicated Columnist Presidential election campaign, the final debate was slated to cover foreign policy—it really didn’t. But let’s first focus on what was said concerning the foreign policy before widening our lens to the wider challenges and successes in the global arena. Consider the combustable situ-

ation on the Korean Peninsula. When Donald Trump assumed the presidency, North Korea had already conducted four nuclear tests and had tested intercontinental missile systems to deliver them. Kim Jong-un’s communist regime had announced a target list which included American bases in Japan as well as Hawaii and West coast USA. And this was ok? By 2013 the new North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un had made threats and brought the Obama administration to the point of hand wringing over the clear and present danger from North Korea. But in 2017, newly elected President Trump bluntly warned Kim from the rostrum of the United

Nations General Assembly. The world appeared on the brink. But the Donald got Kim to blink and amazingly offered to meet with the North Korean dictator in a momentous Singapore Summit. The world paused, exhaled and stepped back from the abyss. Trump stopped the ticking clock but didn’t solve the longterm problem of Pyongyang’s nuclear proliferation and its threats. But no war! Democrat challenger Joe Biden scorned the Trump Administration for pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord. Nonetheless despite leaving the formal agreement, the USA has significantly reduced its carbon emissions via private sector initiatives.

Viewing China, Donald Trump’s tariffs and sanctions have worked to stop the hemorrhage of American jobs, massive trade deficits, serious human rights violations, and perfidious technology theft. The debate’s big face-offs over American energy production and especially fracking, went viral. But take note; the United States became the world’s top crude oil producer in 2018 and 2019! Amazingly despite a powerful industrial economy, the USA is no longer dependent for its energy supplies from the volatile Middle East. Energy independence has emerged as a vital strategic asset for the USA since it makes us See METZLER on 37

The Power Of Breath

by Tekla Frates

Meredith Whole Living Center

I was recently in my car heading for work when I noticed a stiffness in my neck and shoulders. It was obvious that I hadn’t taken the time to practice my usual morning routine before setting off into the day. As I paused and paid attention, I noticed my tongue pressed firmly to the roof of my mouth, my jaw clenched, my posture imbalanced enough that my head was tilting back and squeezing slightly at the base of my skull, and my breathing was shallow, short, and up in my chest. Yes- all physical stress triggers were engaged! Like many, I did not have any useful stress management training in my younger years. I hadn’t been aware that ignoring these small physical engagements could turn into an elevated state of discomfort. I was unaware of how serious the mind-body connection is. There came a time in life that the discomfort became so great that it couldn’t be ignored, sending me on an 8 year quest for answers. I now have the ability to move myself into a

more mindful state of awareness and create relief instead of emotional or physical distress. All it takes is practice. Now, more than ever, it is important for us all to purposely redefine what health feels and looks like, and to understand how we can personally and responsibility take part in what needs to change. I am fixated on providing others the space to understand the power of breath. With good training and practice, everyone can utilize their own breath to create big changes in their mental and physical state of being. In fact, if you can breathe then you can heal yourself, in many ways. We understand that the autonomic nervous system regulates certain body processes, such as the rate of breathing. However, without a

person’s conscious effort, many spend the day breathing without attention to how, why, and when our breathing changes; or even stops. By tapping into our subtle energy networks- using the breath in particular, we gain access to a powerful tool for regulating our responses to stress. Particular breathing strategies can be used as a tool to help many people to manage their thoughts, moods, and experiences. Energy likes to move and flow. Breath holding is just one habit that triggers an ongoing pause in that cycle of movement which causes stress in the mindbody. As a former habitual breath holder, I encourage anyone dealing with chronic stress or anxiety, to pay attention to yourself this week. How often do you notice you’re actually holding your breath? Press-

ing your tongue to the roof of your mouth? Clenching your jaw? Pinching at the base of your skull? The great news is that once you can pinpoint how you’re personally creating some of the stress in your mind-body, it becomes easier to find the remedy to change it. Focusing on the timing and pace of our breath can have positive effects on our body and mind. In fact, several brain regions linked to emotion, attention, and body awareness are activated when we pay attention to our breath. That’s right, we can personally alter our state of mind and how we physically feel, by learning how to breath in different ways. Remember, our emotions that are unattended to show up in our physical mindbodies as aches, pains, and eventually disease. We can’t control everything around us, but luckily we all have the ability to train new breathing habits, develop healthy energy patterns, and find the mental and physical relief we are all so desperately seeking. Benefits Of Meditation

by Dr. Graham Moneysmith, DC. Contributing Writer

Still 2020 everyone, sorry to be the buzzkill. Besides, a new way of life, due to COVID we’ve also had all kinds of other stress: election season, wildfires, and murder hornets. Just waiting for the aliens and sharknado to show up. I’m kidding about the last ones… ...I think? The point is, we are living in a new reality. The job and financial picture has been different for so many people. School life is dramatically different for our kids and educators. You know all of this. You’re living it. My question is: what are you doing about it to protect yourself. Especially regarding your health. You can’t change the external world, at this point. But you can control you. Your internal world, despite what happens around you can still be guarded, built up, and growing. Stress is pouring down on most of us and ruining our health. It’s never been more important than now, in this moment, to become the master of your internal environment. There are a lot of ways to address this part of you.

Talk to a healthcare provider, confiding in a friend or family, good health habits (exercise, sleep, hydrate), or cultivating another source of happiness like a hobby. So here is one more suggestion: meditate. Ok, ok I know to some of you, that’s going to sound hippy dippy. Hear me out. It’s free, it can be done at home, and anyone can do it. Best of all it works. Who doesn’t like free stuff that works? This is from the Mayo Clinic (mayoclinic.org): The emotional benefits of meditation can include: 1) Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations 2) Building skills to manage your stress 3) Increasing self-awareness 4)Focusing on the present 5)Reducing negative emotions 6) Increasing imagination and creativity 7)Increasing patience and tolerance And see you thought, it was hippy dippy! I’m kidding, I used to also. But who couldn’t use all or any of those benefits in 2020 or at any other time for that matter. There’s actually even benefits physiologically ranging from stuff like: chronic pain to blood pressure to tension headaches. So there’s benefits. But the better question is where do we start. So there’s lots of different types of meditation. If you don’t want to do it on your own there are apps that will teach you or youtube even has guided meditation that

you can listen to and follow along. Or you can kick it old school (mindful.org): get comfortably seated, sit still, focus on your breath, set a timer (but start small, even two minutes), anytime your mind wanders from your breath simply acknowledge that and return to the focus on your breath. Congratulations, you’re meditating. You’ve unlocked a bounty of health benefits. No money spent, no fancy gear needed, and you haven’t even left your house. A wise person in my life told me: “you can’t change what happens to you,you can only control your reactions and what you give sanction”. They were absolutely correct. Now more than ever when so much of life is out of our control.

It’s so important to remember that. And forget 2020, that fact is always true. Life is going to come at us and throw us for a loop. But we get to control how we handle it and how we react. The more tools we have in our toolbox, the better prepared we are to handle the unforeseen. The question will be whether or not we will do this. Being healthy is a big part of this adaptability: physical and mental health. And, so often we are prepared to address the physical, while the mental suffers. There is no separation. One affects the other. And with a little practice meditation can be a tool that addresses both.

Senior Activities For The Cooler Months by Martha Swats, Comfort Keepers As we enter the fall and winter season this year, things look a little different. Many seniors continue to isolate at home because of the Coronavirus pandemic and this can take a toll on their mental health. It’s important for seniors to work with their families, caregivers and health professionals to develop a plan that allows them to safely take part in activities they love and maintain positive mental health through activity and connection. At any age, our health and wellbeing are enhanced by regularly participating in the things that bring us purpose, hope and joy. For seniors, taking part in these activities can be more difficult, older people who feel younger than their age show less brain aging, better memory and less depression. And studies show that staying engaged is important for a senior’s mental and physical health. Medical professionals recognize that social determinants of health, especially those that affect mental, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, impact health outcomes and quality of life. There are always opportunities for meaningful moments and joyful days with a little planning, conversation

and intentional action. Fall Activities Fall activities tend to focus on connecting with loved ones, enjoying the turning season and spending time outside before the weather gets icy. •This year, many people can’t see their favorite sports teams play in person. But fall is a dream for seniors that enjoy football, baseball and hockey and there are ways to participate virtually. Seniors and their loved ones can watch together over a video call or have a socially distanced viewing party at home, as long as everyone adheres to recommended safety guidelines. •Enjoying fall foliage is an activity in itself, and can be done sitting on the porch, going for a short walk or on a longer hike outside. Raking leaves can even be fun when done with loved ones. •Eating is another

activity that seems to be more fun in the fall – family dinners for those isolating together, baking projects and Halloween fun are all opportunities for seniors to participate in activities they enjoy while maintaining their nutrition goals. Winter Activities The holidays are filled with opportunities to enjoy music, celebrations with family and community service. •Holiday shopping is a fun activity usually done outside of the house. However, online shopping may be the best way for seniors to get their gifts without visiting the mall. •Singing, dancing, playing instruments and listening to holiday carols are ways that seniors can enjoy music, no matter what the weather looks like outside. Streaming music services often have a wide selection, allowing seniors to pick their favorites to listen

to through a phone, virtual assistant or computer. •While there are ways that seniors can serve others year-round, volunteering can be even more meaningful around the holidays. Finding virtual volunteer opportunities is even easier this year – writing letters, knitting blankets and finding old coats and sweaters to donate can all be done safely at home.

(StatePoint) Sponsored by Amgen. Did you know that 25 percent of the 805,000 heart attacks per year in the U.S. are recurrent heart attacks? The American Heart Association reports that once you’ve experienced a heart attack, your chances of having another one is higher. In fact, nearly one in five patients who’ve had a heart attack will have another cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, within one year. While there are various factors that contribute to a heart attack, cholesterol is one of the most important modifiable risk factors. Over time, high levels of bad cholesterol can build up in your arter-

ies and create clogs, making it difficult for blood to flow to where your body needs it. This can ultimately lead to a devastating heart attack. Here are six tips you can implement to help manage your cholesterol numbers: 1.Get checked: Stay on top of your numbers by having your cholesterol checked regularly. This is particularly important if you have already experienced a heart attack. 2. Eat a hearthealthy diet. A hearthealthy diet is low in saturated fat and trans-fat. You can reduce these fats in your diet by limiting your intake of fried food, red meat and dairy prod-

ucts made with whole milk, and by cooking with healthy oils, such as vegetable or olive oil. Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish and nuts, while curbing sugary foods and beverages. Eating this way increases your fiber intake, which can help lower your cholesterol.

get 2.5 hours of moderate intensity exercise per week in order to lower high cholesterol.

3. Be physically active. A sedentary lifestyle lowers HDL (good) cholesterol, which is needed to remove LDL (bad) cholesterol from your arteries. Stay physically active to not only improve your cholesterol, but to also manage your blood pressure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults

5. Manage weight. Being overweight tends to raise LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol. Losing excess weight can improve your cholesterol levels.

4. Quit smoking. According to the CDC, smoking damages your blood vessels, speeds up the hardening of the arteries and greatly increases your risk for heart disease.

6. Take proper medication. Bad cholesterol can be lowered by lifestyle changes, but diet and exercise alone may not be enough to lower LDL-C. Medications like statins USA-14582348 are important in lowering LDL-C, but patients who’ve had a heart attack may need to talk to their doctor about additional treatments to lower cholesterol even further. New England’s Wild Birds & Their Habitats

Birdwatching Firsts by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

Birdwatching firsts are always exciting. Whether it is the first time ever seeing a particular bird, seeing a bird for the first time of the year or seeing one in your yard for the first time, firsts are good for a little adrenaline rush. I can’t remember the last time I saw a firstever bird. I’ll have to think on that one for a bit. The other day, however, I did have a first-of-the-season bird that was cause for celebration. You get so used to seeing the regular birds and learning their movements and personalities that you know immediately when you see something different. I looked out into the backyard the other day and a bird hopped onto a low-hanging branch. Its shape seemed a little different than the chickadees, titmice and nuthatches that have been visiting in droves and are yearround birds. It also perched still on that branch whereas those other birds would have stopped for a moment and flew off somewhere else. Knowing it was something different, I ran for the binoculars and zeroed in on my first dark-eyed junco of the season. By March,

A dark-eyed junco perches in a tree in New England. dark-eyed juncos will not be as exciting as we will have been seeing them daily for the past several months. But in the fall, that first junco is a worthy sighting indeed. Dark-eyed juncos will soon become regular at my feeder, especially when it snows. They get an extra sense of urgency and hop all over my deck looking for seeds when snow is falling. At previous homes I have lived in, white-throated sparrows have joined the juncos around this time of year. For whatever reason, this house doesn’t seem to attract many white-throated

sparrows, even though the habitat seems suitable. If I see one or two a winter, I consider myself lucky. I don’t know what other birds will show up this winter, but I am looking forward to the first-of-the-season sightings of those birds. I wrote last week about the winter finch irruption forecast, so perhaps pine siskins or purple finches will show up and stay a while. I have received more reports of siskins invading people’s feeder stations. Scott from Stoddard put out his feeders one morning and “within an hour

14 THOMSON from 1 Primaries and General Elections, candidates make many promises to all voters, but over my lifetime most elected Presidents, once in office, very seldom follow through with all their promises. But President Trump was different, he was a Businessman not a Politician, and once he was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2017, he went to work to fulfill what he promised to the American people by “Making America Great Again” and he has delivered on his promises. A few are listed below. 1. By cutting taxes and regulations on businesses (big and small), he created the most prosperous economy in our lifetime. 2. With record growth in our economy, he created millions of good paying jobs

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 29, 2020 — with record low unemployment, the lowest in the past 50 years, just before we were hit by the COVID-19. African Americans and Hispanics saw some of the lowest unemployment numbers in our lifetimes. 3. Many past Presidents only gave lip service to our illegal immigration problems, but President Trump got serious and did just what he promised to do, stopping illegal immigration. He is building a wall on our southern border to protect our citizens and enforce our immigration laws. 4. President Trump promised to rebuild our Military, wipe out ISIS, reduce and bring home our soldiers, and increased benefits and wages for our soldiers, while improving the VA

Donald Trump signs the “no tax” pledge in 2015. Tom Thomson is to his left. hospitals for our Veterans. 5. On Energy, President Trump promised to become energy independent. Today, we are energy independent and everyone sees that benefit when they fill up their vehicle, which is less than half the price per gallon under the Obama/Biden Administration. Today, I

filled up for $1.95 per gallon. Yet Biden and Harris want to shut down fossil fuels and fracking, which will drive gas and home heating prices through the roof. 6. Trump was our “Law and Order” President from day one, he has the backs of our men and women in blue. Because of his

nearly 100% support, he has received the majority of all police and sheriffs support; Joe Biden has virtually no support from Law Enforcement. Remember, not once did Joe Biden speak out on the last 3 to 4 months of riots, looting and burning down small business; this is shameful and that’s why Biden has no support from Law Enforcement. 7. President Trumps excellent picks for Supreme Court Justices will protect your 1st and 2nd Amendment rights. There are many other “Promises Made; Promises Kept” that have a positive impact on our hard-working men and women that President Trump has made and delivered on. Thank you President Trump. As I said I’m a lifelong Republican and I will

cast my vote on November 3rd for President Donald Trump, Governor Chris Sununu and every other Republican on my ballot and I encourage every other true Republican to vote straight Republican and I would invite our Independent voters to join me and even encourage Democrats who have real concerns of the direction Biden/ Harris and the extreme base of the Democrat Party is headed to do the same. Your vote on November 3rd will be the most important vote of your life; if you want to enjoy a roaring economy and prosperity for all, VOTE for President Donald Trump; if you want higher taxes and a fast track to Socialism, vote for Joe Biden. MVPs, Mo, And More

by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

By the time you read this the World Series will be over and baseball fans will soon focus on the annual awards such as for league “Most Valuable Players.” In this crazily abbreviated sports year, one wonders if asterisks should be deployed for whomever wins “MVP.” Like most awards, the MVP designation always involves subjectivity. Consider that BoSox great Ted Williams won batting’s Triple Crown in both 1942 and 1947 but lost the MVP Awards to Yankees who had vastly inferior statistics, Joe Gordon and Joe DiMaggio, respectively. But sportswriters decide MVP winners and because Ted was mean to sportswriters they shafted him. But the sportswriters gave a BoSoxer a break in 1995 when they awarded Boston’s Mo Vaughn the MVP over Toronto’s Albert Belle. Mo batted .300 with 39 home runs. Belle batted .317 with 50 homers and had better numbers across the board. But Belle was mean to sportswriters so they shafted him. These things happen all the time. One year Plymouth State’s football team went un-

Shameful. It all diminished everyone, including those who were honored. Awards are meant to recognize achievement. But subjectivity regularly demeans award processes, whether

we’re talking about AllStar teams, the Heisman Trophy, the National Honor Society, Citizen-of-the-Year, or military decorations. Some folks care more about recognition than others. As military people wear their ribbons, medals, and badges on their chests for all to see, they can be particularly sensitive to slights, real or perceived. See MOFFETT on 16

MOFFETT from 15 Napoleon marveled about how brave men would die seeking the validation and affirmation associated with getting a medal. “It is amazing what a man will do for a piece of colored ribbon.” Remember Barack Obama receiving that Nobel Peace Prize when he was running for President in 2008? Many people wondered what the Illinois legislator and community organizer had done to receive this ultimate acclaim. Fast food restaurants started offering Nobel Peace Prize nominations for patrons who’d buy an extra burger. Giving the award to an undeserving recipient greatly diminished its prestige, but the Nobel Committee wanted to influence the American election. Even Obama

fans were embarrassed. Nobel committee chair Geir Lundestad later admitted to the Associated Press that the committee hoped the award would strengthen Obama. In his memoir, Lundestad said that even Obama was surprised. “No Nobel Peace Prize ever elicited more attention than the prize to Barack Obama,” wrote Lundestad. “Even many of Obama’s supporters believed that the prize was a mistake. In that sense the committee didn’t achieve what it had hoped for.” Somewhere sits a more deserving person who was denied due Peace Prize recognition. (Truth be told, President Trump probably rates much consideration for a Peace Prize, given the remarkable progress he helped foster in the Middle

East—helping get the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to recognize Israel. But like Ted Williams and Albert Belle, he ticked off the establishment and the media, so he won’t get due recognition for his efforts.) Anyway, despite all the flaws and subjectivities, MVP awards and the like still have their places as they help raise awareness about achievement while providing writers and fans grist for the sports mill. No asterisks need be deployed. Sports Quiz Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967 while leading the Red Sox to the World Series. He’d have been a unanimous MVP choice except for one surly sportswriter who voted for someone else. Who got that one

As we slide back into dark beer season, folks often categorize porters and stouts as the same type of beer. Although looking like close neighbors to each other, they are most definitely different which confuses newcomers to the craft beer scene. According to some of the online resources I checked out, it depends on the style or version of either porter or stout that defines its difference from the other. For example, an Irish stout may be more bitter and lighter body (thinner in my description), than most porters. Stouts generally use roasted barley which gives them their blackness where porters are a darker version of an English brown ale. In general, the brewing world lived by brown ales initially, then porters and then finally stouts as customers wanted more and more flavor. Which ever you gravitate toward, you will surely like our focus beer of the week, Burlwood Porter. Two men have realized a dream and created a destination for craft beer lovers in the

BREW from 17 out more about TBBC at twinbarnsbrewing. com Burlwood Porter is a delightful creation and part of the core beers from Twin Barns. Based on an American porter style, roasted malts play a big role in the aroma and taste of this very balanced beer. Caramel, cocoa and loads of coffee notes are most present to your initial greeting. The late additions of Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the production add character to Burlwood, helping balance against the malts. At 6.5% ABV

and 30 IBUs, Burlwood Porter is fairly full bodied without being overbearing. Enjoy this beer with a great hamburger when you visit Twin Barns. BeerAdvocate.com hasn’t officially rated Burlwood Porter as of this writing. Folks that have tried it a posted a rating of 3.50 or above. Currently, you can find Burlwood Porter in 16 oz four pack cans at Twin Barns Brewing Company and Casen-Keg, 5 Mill Street in Meredith. With each beer creation at Twin Barns, you should plan to visit them soon.

Properly Powered Tips For Proper Use Of Battery-Operated Power Tools (Family Features) While battery-powered tools are convenient options for efficiently tackling projects both around the house and on the job site, contractors and DIYers alike still need to know how to safely operate and handle the tools. Another important safety aspect to keep in mind is battery selection. Lithium-ion batteries have become the industry-standard energy source for cordless power tools due to their energy storage capabilities, durability, versatility and portability. However, counterfeit batteries – third-party batter-

ies which appear to be from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) – and knock-off batteries are surfacing in the marketplace at a lower cost than OEM batteries. These counterfeit and knock-off batteries have not been evaluated as a part of the tool, battery and charging system where an independent certification lab such as UL, CSA or ETL tests and evaluates the product for compliance with ANSI and internationally accepted safety standards. For cordless power tool “systems,” these standards evaluate the tool, bat-

tery and charger to ensure proper communication between those items and the ability

to monitor and control critical functions, such as cell voltage balance, power deliv-

ery and temperatures. Using a lithium-ion battery that is not specifically designed for a specific tool and charger system can result

in poor performance, shorter life and damage to the tool and charger. This can also void a tool’s warranty or cause a battery to fail, which may cause a fire or explosion that could lead to personal injury or property damage. Because some counterfeit and knock-off batteries can be difficult to distinguish from OEM, it is important to purchase batteries from authorized dealers and distributors. If you have questions about your battery being a genuine OEM product, contact the power tool manufacturer. In addition to the potential dangers of using unauthorized See TOOLS on 26

Four Easy - And Effective Ways To Protect Your Home

Staying Secure During National Home Safety Month And Beyond (BPT) - Data collected in recent years by the FBI has revealed that there are roughly 2.5 million burglaries a year. This averages out to one burglary about every 13 seconds nationwide. So, while many feel safe and secure at home, one can never be too prepared when it comes to protecting your loved ones. But what’s the solution? Beyond evaluating your surroundings and identifying unsecure access points, many homeowners can benefit from taking proactive preventative measures to ensure their homes and families are protected. And while installing an expensive, high-tech security system is an easy solution, there are other measures that can be taken to provide immediate barriers and establish a safer distance from potential threats. Here are four effective ways to easily prepare and protect your home year-round. 1. Identify unsecure parts of the home - Before even implementing a home security plan, examine all the doors and windows in your house. Pay close attention to whether there are any windows that are accessible from ground-level or ones

that might not lock properly. Likewise, identify any doors in your house that may feel “at risk.” This can be doors without deadbolts, older ones that may easily be knocked in, or those that are hidden and dark, making them ideal for home invaders to stealthily leverage. Reevaluate each door, window or entryway and determine a game plan for increased home security. 2. Strengthen door security - If your primary concern is reinforcing your doors, there are several easyto-install and affordable options to help support hinged and sliding doors. De-

signed for nearly every door, products such as an adjustable Door Security Bar can provide a strong grip and help prevent doors from opening. However, if you would prefer to alert people when an intruder is present, a SABRE Door Stop Alarm can provide peace of mind. Designed to look like a simple door wedge, a piercing alarm sounds when the door opens slightly and pressure is applied, drawing immediate attention to the situation from up to 1,500 feet away. It can be easily set up on any hotel door or rental property, bringing an added sense of security on the road. 3. Safeguard windows - When looking

to protect windows, as well as doors, one cost-effective solution can be installing the portable Door and Window Alarm See PROTECT on 26

Five Ways To Make Your Home A Healthier Place To Be (StatePoint) Our homes are our sanctuaries. It’s more important than ever to ensure your home is a safe and healthy environment for you and your family. Indoor air quality can have a negative effect on your health, and the air inside your home is oftentimes more polluted than the air outside. Explore five effective wellness design principles that can lead to better indoor air quality and on overall healthier home. 1. Increase natural light. One of the most

effective ways for improving the interior environment of your home is by bringing in more sunlight. Sunlight also provides numerous health and wellness benefits: •helping the body to produce vitamin D •boosting productivity •promoting better sleep by helping the body maintain its circadian rhythm •improving your mood and energy Consider large windows and window combinations. Casement windows from Andersen, which are available in dramatic sizes, create a stronger connection to the outside. Certified by ENERGY STAR, homeowners can opt for more glass in their windows while continuing to prioritize energy efficiency. 2. Invest in safe materials. Potentially harmful VOCs, or “vola-

tile organic compounds,” are gases emitted from certain common household products, including paints, varnishes and cleaning supplies. Exposure to VOCs can lead to eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, and over time, can even cause organ damage, according to the EPA. However, “zeroVOC” and “low-VOC” options exist and selecting these alternatives will minimize the potential for these common pollutants to impact the air quality in your home, helping reduce health risks to you and your family. 3. Foster ventilation. Ventilation helps your home rid itself of moisture, smoke, cooking odors and indoor pollutants. Natural ventilation is a great alternative to air conditioning in moderate climates. To

ensure maximum ventilation, be selective about the insect screens you choose for your windows and doors. TruScene insect screens from Andersen for example, let in over 25 percent more fresh air and 50 percent more clarity than standard Andersen fiberglass insect screens, making them a good choice for people who want to take advantage of open windows. 4. Eliminate dust. Accumulated dust can irritate the eyes, lungs and skin and further aggravate the symptoms of people living with allergies. Sometimes attempts to free a home of dust only end up kicking up more debris. To avoid this, use wet dusting methods. When it’s time to empty vacuum bags and canisters, do so carefully — this is one See HEALTH on 26

Five Must-Do Home Improvements For Fall (BPT) - The average American home has nine DIY jobs that need to be tackled, according to a study conducted by Porch.com. Fall is the perfect time to give your home a little TLC and start checking off projects on your to-do list. Here are five easy fall fixups to get your home ready for the upcoming season: * Paint the front door - Nothing gives your home an instant face lift like a freshly painted front door. Painted exterior doors can boost curb appeal, add character and provide a trendy but tasteful first impression of your home. Choose a color that will make your front door pop and improve the look of your home’s exterior in less

than an afternoon. * Repair holes in the drywall - Whether the damage is small from a picture frame nail or anchor, or as large as doorknob damage, DAP’s new Eclipse™ Rapid Wall Repair Patches make repairing holes in drywall so fast and easy, anyone can do it. DAP’s Eclipse provides a durable, mess-free repair that requires no spackling, sanding or additional tools - simply patch the damage and it’s ready to paint immediately, allowing projects to be finished in minutes, rather than hours or days. * Freshen up the landscaping - Planting new flowers or shrubbery is an easy way to

bring pops of fall colors to the front of your home. Keep it simple and pick plants in one or two hues that contrast with the exterior of your home. Regular mowing and tending to weeds will always help your front yard look its best. * Seal window and doors - Small gaps and cracks around windows and doors can allow cold air and rain to make its way inside. Keep your home protected and warm during the fall and winter seasons by replacing worn exterior caulk with DAP Dynaflex Ultra™ Advanced Exterior Sealant. Dynaflex Ultra uses DAP’s exclusive WeatherMax Technology™ to create a waterproof and weatherproof seal that

won’t crack or discolor over time. * Replace the furnace filter - Dirty filters mean your furnace will likely work harder. Regularly changing the filters in your central air and heating system can significantly improve its efficiency and longevity, while easing the pressure on your wallet. In most homes, filters should be changed monthly during the heating season. You should also have your furnace serviced periodically to make sure it is working properly and to help avoid larger repairs later on when the temperature drops. TOOLS from 22 batteries, the higher energy potential in lithium-ion batteries, even OEM ones, can lead to potential damage when misused. Prior to operating a battery-powered tool, consider these tips for safe selection, use, transportation and disposal from the experts at the Power Tool Institute – the leading organization for power tool safety resources, information and education – and its members, who represent power tool brands. Selection and Use: •Batteries are not interchangeable, so it’s important to only use batteries and chargers from the original power tool manufacturer. •Never modify, disassemble or tamper

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 29, 2020 —

with a battery. The performance of modified batteries can be unpredictable and dangerous. •Inspect batteries regularly for signs of damage, such as crushing, cts, punctures or leaking fluids. If a battery is damaged, do not use it and contact the manufacturer. •Never immerse your tool, battery pack or charger in liquid or allow liquid to enter it. •Use and store your battery within the temperature limits stated by the manufacturer. •As a general practice, it is best to unplug battery chargers and remove battery packs when not in use. Do not store batteries on their chargers. Transportation and

Disposal: •Always transport and store lithium-ion batteries as instructed in the instruction manual. •Do not allow metal objects, such as keys, coins, screws and nails, to contact the battery terminals. •When disposing of a lithium-ion battery, take it to a local recycling center or place it in a receptacle designed for batteries. Throwing it in the trash or municipal recycling can pose a fire hazard. Find more information on safe battery use at TakChargeOfYourBattery.com, or visit PowerToolInstitute.com for additional power tool safety and operation tips.

PROTECT from 23 Kit, which comes with four alarms. Affixing onto any window, this alarm requires no additional wiring and emits a loud 120dB sound when it detects an unwanted intruder entering, serving as a deterrent as well as an attention-grabbing signal to homeowners and surrounding neighbors up to 750 feet away. 4. Take home defense to the next level - Home intrusions can leave homeowners feeling vulnerable, especially if these incidents happen while they are home. One easy-to-use, readily accessible solution for homeowners is the SABRE Home Defense Pepper Gel, which is designed for using in-

doors with an 18-foot range. Another option for those seeking additional home security measures is the Pepper Spray Launcher Home Defense Kit, which allows for greater distance between the homeowner and intruder. The Launcher deploys pepper powder projectiles up to 175 feet away, offering more stopping power and creating an even safer distance between your family and an intruder.

HEALTH from 24 task that may be best to perform outdoors. Finally, make maintaining a dust-free home easier by investing in an air purifier. Consider also selecting machine washable curtains, furniture covers and other fabrics. 5. Decorate with plants. Decorating your living spaces with plants is not only a beautiful design statement, but plants act as natural air purifiers, absorbing toxicants and converting indoor carbon dioxide into oxygen. For more healthy home ideas and inspiration, visit andersenwindows.com. Improving the interior environment of your home is vital. Fortunately, there are many effective steps you can take to promote healthy indoor spaces.

PATENAUDE from 1 ski boots out of the closet and dressed quickly. It was cloudy and warm, well above freezing. When we stepped on the snow it compressed and compacted nicely. Perfect conditions for cross-country skiing. We kicked and gilded all over our yard, leaving behind nice tracks in the snow soft sticky snowman building snow. We headed out on our trails and skied all over our neighbors’ fields and yards. What a joy it was to have a strong kick and good glide. Gliding on skis feels ageless. Letting gravity pull me down a slope has felt wonderfully the same every ski season. If you don’t ski, maybe you have the same feeling riding a bicycle down a hill. But skis are on my feet not something I sit on to ride. I feel fast and free. I haven’t been on skis since last April. Charlie

Meanwhile the diehard downhill skiers flocked to the mountains. On social media I

saw photo after photo of happy skiers on Cannon, Burke, Waterville and Wildcat. Many had skinned up the slopes and others just post-holed/walked up in the snow carrying their

snowboards or skis up the mountain. Sunday Morning there was still snow left and it was cold and it was firm. The sun was also bright in the sky. We de-

Looking back at the Kinsman Ridge Trail on Cannon Mountain. The shoulder season, the time between summer and winter, often makes for slippery and difficult trail conditions. There wasn’t enough snow for snowshoes or microspikes yet the trail was slippery and wet. When heading out to hike make sure to let someone know your plans, be prepared for bad weather and remember it is better to turn back before you’re having difficulties. Please consider purchasing a NH Fish and Game Hike Safe Card. PATENAUDE from 28 knew the snow wouldn’t last much longer. As it warmed up the remaining snow in the trees had become falling big slush bombs. Anyone in the forest would be getting very wet. We stuck to the open fields and enjoyed another good hour of sliding around. Later in the afternoon I decided to hike Cannon Mountain. I was surprised to see the Echo Lake parking lot completely full. I could see dozens of people standing on Artist’s Bluff’s open ledges. Cannon’s front five ski trails were all tracked out. Big loopy figure 8’s and wide swirling S’ marked the snow and were the first places to melt down to the grass. I didn’t see anyone but imagined it must have been a sight to see all those skiers and snowboarders out there making turns on Saturday.

When I arrived at the Tramway parking area and the trailhead for the Kinsman Ridge Trail most of the parking spots were filled. I thought the wet conditions would keep more people at home. I passed by dozens of people that were on their way up and many more making their way down. The slush bombs falling from the trees had pretty much stopped but the trail was covered with packed snow and running water. I wore my hiking boots with the studds in the soles and I used hiking poles to help propel me up the trail. Nearly everyone I passed commented that the conditions didn’t seem to be slowing me down. I have to say I equally marveled at those people that were wearing sneakers and jeans and somehow slipping and sliding but still making it up and down

the mountain in their summer outfits. Everyone was having a good time. Higher up the wind was blowing hard, roar-

It won’t be long before the lifts are spinning and the tracks are set! ing loudly and strong. I enjoyed the clear view of the mountains as I picked my way through the rocky open area before reaching the summit. There were many people at the lookout tower so I decided to skip it and go to the top

of the ski lift to enjoy the big vista. The snow was wet and sloppy and squashed down to the ground. As I was hanging out at the top of the Cannonball Quad I spied a lone man carrying a snowboard walking up. He

was late to the party but there was probably just enough snow that he’d still enjoy a rough ride. Think Snow.

A person wasn’t considered an inhabitant of a particular town for the purposes of voting unless he had resided there for at least six months, or had been issued a transfer card from another New Hampshire town in which he previously resided. Or, if he did not apply for a transfer card from the town from which he moved he could still vote in that town up to six months after he moved to the new town. No one was considered a pauper unless he had received assistance from the town within ninety days prior to the meeting in which voting took place. Neither was he considered a pauper if the public assistance he received came from federal funding. A person who was excused from paying taxes at their own request could still vote if he

paid all taxes assessed against him prior to voting. Aliens were not allowed to vote until they became naturalized citizens. In 1956 the supervisors of check lists in New Hampshire towns and cities were required to make and post in at least two “of the most public places in town, a complete alphabetical list of all legal voters in the town thirty days before the day of the biennial and annual elections and any other election at which such list is to be used.” Election laws then, and I assume now, included a section on “Provisions to Insure the Purity of Elections.” I was told of a voter who was sought after by men in a local town many years ago in an effort to persuade him to vote. When they found him he said he had already voted in Concord, but he was persuaded to vote again. The fine for any person caught doing the same in 1956 would have been from fifty to five hundred dollars. If anyone gave another intoxicating liquor to influence his vote or as a treat for his vote, the fine was

election, primary, or general election, may challenge any other voter offering to vote therein, and the moderator shall not receive the vote of the person so challenged until he shall subscribe , make and tender to the clerk or moderator an affidavit....” In that affidavit the

person challenged was to swear or affirm that he was who he said he was, that he was an eligible voter, and that he could read and write. Any refusal to recite the affidavit meant that the person was not allowed to vote. The question of who should be eligible to

vote is still being debated today, and if space permitted we could list others who were denied the opportunity to vote in the past. Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr., welcomes your comments at danahillsmiths@yahoo.com

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 29, 2020 — MAILBOAT from 2 George Stephanopoulos rarely involved himself in VP Biden’s town hall, giving the audience and VP Biden time to ask and answer questions. On NBC, Savannah Guthrie dominated President Trump’s town hall with her own questions, smears, and interruptions, leaving less time for audience questions and President Trump’s answers. Biden smoothly answered soft-ball questions without being asked why he hasn’t implemented his solutions during his 47 years in Washington. Biden admitted that his 1994 Crime bill was a mistake; why did a fix have to wait for President Trump? Why didn’t Biden condemn the violent riots? Biden’s racist comments, his friendships with racists including George Wallace and KKK (W.VA.) founder Senator Byrd, and his improprieties with women were ignored. No one asked why he didn’t stop the offshoring of millions of good American jobs. He wasn’t asked about his plan for making citizens of 22 million illegal aliens, giving them “free” healthcare paid for by citizens and legal residents; about his plan to overburden and destroy our already nearly bankrupt Medicare system; or his planned Federal control of the suburbs. Nor was he asked about his corrupt use of his government offices to enrich himself and his family. Biden, who botched America’s response to the H1N1 virus (https://tinyurl.com/ y2c2cduy) and whose Covid-19 plans mimic what Trump has already done, attacked President Trump’s response to Covid-19, while Dr. Fauci said

Trump’s actions saved many thousands of lives and that he “can’t imagine anyone doing more” (https://tinyurl.com/ y4l4aeyz). Ms. Guthrie falsely claimed that Trump didn’t condemn white supremacists and the KKK when asked by Chris Wallace; Trump condemned them when Wallace asked both in 2020 and in 2016, and about 20 other times on video. After Charlottesville, Trump repeatedly condemned white supremacists and all hate groups, (https:// tinyurl.com/y2r9hhvy and https://tinyurl. com/yyoo4c9u). Only willful misrepresentation turns Trump’s statement into praise for any violence or hate, (https://tinyurl.com/ y66szzuu). This smear is intended to scare minority voters who see that President Trump has done more to help minorities than Democrats ever did (https:// tinyurl.com/yypmoonh). As opposed to Biden, President Trump could answer audience questions by describing his accomplishments in strengthening our country and helping the American people. If anyone ever doubted whether there’s media bias for Democrats and against Republicans, it was on clear display Thursday night. VP Biden answered soft-ball questions with old promises; President Trump answered hardball questions with facts and accomplishments. For great-sounding promises that he hasn’t kept in 47 years, vote for Biden. To continue making the world more peaceful and Americans wealthier, healthier, and safer, vote for President Trump! Don Ewing Meredith, NH.

Voting For Giuda To The Editor: I am casting my vote to re-elect Senator Bob Giuda for New Hampshire State Senate District 2. Bob has a proven track record of working in the best interests of New Hampshire. He has opposed proposed sales and income taxes, helped address inequities in education funding, and is a fierce defender of second amendment rights. He also has a record of supporting small business and has consistently worked to sensibly reduce taxes and unneeded regulations. He led the Senate’s fight to stabilize the biomass industry, and fought hard to stop Northern Pass. Bob knows how to balance the rights of the individual and the common needs of the community to achieve the best possible outcome for all. Please join me in re-electing this dedicated public servant so he can continue our fight to maintain our way of life in this wonderful state we call New Hampshire. Harry Viens State Representative – Belknap 1

Vote Corky Messner

To The Editor: There is violence continuing in cities ruled by Democrats - Chicago, Baltimore, Denver, Portland and Kenosha. Criminal mobs break windows, loot stores, smash statues, and attack people. Their elected politicians do not support the police. In New Hampshire Republican Corky Messner, a West Point graduate, is running

for Senator. Corky is very vocal about supporting the second amendment and our police. Corky will vote for lower taxes which will encourage entrepreneurs to start new businesses. On October 1 2020, the registered voters in New Hampshire were divided as follows - 38% Independents, 32% Democrats and 30% Republican. If only slightly more than half of voters registered as Independents, go to the polls November 3 and vote for Corky Messner, he will win that senate seat. The result will be lower taxes, and more private sector more in New Hampshire. David Scott Dover, NH.

Candidates Deserve Attention To The Editor: The slate of Republican candidates on the ballot on Nov. 3rd deserve your attention and your vote on Nov. 3rd because of their individual skills, talents, and unique personalities which will lead to greater accountability and transparency. Whether you admire President Donald Trump’s style or not, you have to admit he has kept his word, and “got the job done,” for his pro-American policies. According to many reliable sources in the media, he “… has done more in 47 months than Joe Biden has done in 47 years!” He has held more news conferences, and handled tougher questions

than his predecessors. His list of accomplishments are incomparable! He deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. Bryant ‘Corky’ Messner is another candidate who deserves your vote for US Senate. He is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point as well as the University of Denver Sturm School of Law. ‘Corky’ served in the US Army with the rank of Captain, and went on the various law firms as Associate and Partner until becoming a Founding Partner and CEO of Messner Reeves LLP Law Firm. Like his opponent, Cynthia Bowers Shaheen, of Missouri, whose changed name is “Jeanne,” he is a transplant from another state. But, unlike his opponent, See MAILBOAT on 35

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 29, 2020 — MAILBOAT from 33 ‘Corky’ has retained his Republican values! ‘Corky’ deserves your vote on Nov.3rd. Steve Negron is another veteran of military service who served in the US Air Force as a Missile Silo Technician. Steve is a graduate with an MBA (Masters, Business Administration) from Western NE University, and is the owner of a small business, Integron, LLC. As a veteran and a small business owner, Steve brings a new focus and perspective to the office of US Congressman from NH… experiences which his opponent lacks! Steve deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. Chris Sununu deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. According to the “Best States Study” from the US News and World Report, “NH is ranked #2 …with respect to taxes and overhaul health of the economies of the states.” If it were not for the veto power of our Republican Governor, NH would have lost its enviable position in this prestigious ranking! In addition, Gov. Sununu has earned the highly prized grade of “A” for his steady handling of the state’s economy after the COVID-19 Recession. Gov. Sununu is highly touted for restraining taxes and spending! Joe Kenney is a person who has served the citizens of NH in various capacities. As a Representative, Senator, candidate for Governor, and Executive Councilor, Joe deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd for his experience and constituent service. Joe is a military “hero” not only for serving 3 tours of duty with the US Marine Corps in

the Middle East (Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the Afghanistan War), but he was honored by President George H. W. Bush in the White House for collecting over 100,000 toys in the US Marines ‘Toys for Tots’ Program which were distributed to DC Metropolitan children. The Boston Celtics saw fit to honor Joe at center court with the “Heroes in Action” Award. Joe Kenney deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. Erin Hennessey deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. As a successful, 3-term Representative from District 1, Erin is an accomplished woman who holds an Accounting Degree from Boston College. She is a CPA, and serves on the Board of Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank. She has served on different NH State Commissions as well as serving as a member of the House Finance Committee. From working as a real estate manager to a college professor to a senior corporate auditor, Erin Hennessey deserves your vote on Nov. 3rd. The Republican candidates for Representative in Districts 1, 2, 3, 14, and 15 range from military veterans to small business owners as well as a lawyer, and a doctor. Calvin Beaulier, Joe DePalma,IV, Dr. Robert Peraino, Matt Simon, David Binford, and Thomas “Wes” Chapmon deserve your vote on Nov. 3rd. These candidates have diverse skills and experiences worthy of service to their constituents. They deserve your vote on Nov. 3rd. Lastly, former Grafton County Sheriff, Doug Dutile, has served Grafton County for decades as a trusted

law enforcement official. He has worked on County budgets with precision by cutting out the “Fat.” He, and Omer Ahern, Jr, both have the experience to present to the citizens and residents of Grafton County a prudent, responsible, and cost-effective budget with no tax increase to the citizens of Grafton County. They deserve your vote for Grafton County Commissioners on Nov. 3rd. Nick De Mayo Sugar Hill, NH.

Hidden Tax Costs

To The Editor: I wish people, especially politicians would be honest. When Joe Biden says he will tax rich businesses I wonder who he thinks buys the products that those taxes are included in the cost of the product. An example is in the last four years my telephone tax is $17.60 for the landline, it’s gone up over $3. I think of all those big telephone companies charging more to businesses and so more for my base telephone bill which is about $60. Congress has also added tax on the internet and another USF surcharge, the USF which was supposed to go away under Bush got added to in the last year. People need to stop voting for candidates who will only vote to add to the cost of cars, electricity, food, etc. To many think as long as they tax business or the rich it doesn’t come from them, well guess what business adds the tax costs to the cost of products you buy. The old saying, “Don’t tax me tax that

man behind the tree” is a farce and most tax costs are hidden in the cost of whatever we buy. Harriet E. Cady Deerfield, N.H

Vote Republican To The Editor: It’s 2020 and time to vote again for rational representatives of our Nation. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist for the American worker to quickly realize that the Republicans have done a remarkable job of improving the economy even though they have constantly being harassed and impeded by Democrats at every opportunity. The economy became robust through perseverance under President Trump and his fellow Republican Patriots. He can and will do it again! That other guy has neither the ability nor the desire to do anything. Democrats want to keep our economy shut down. It is just one of their nefarious ways (along with outright lies and passing the blame) of stealing support and grabbing power, along with inviting the vote of illegal immigrants, supporting sanctuary cities, encouraging lawlessness, and providing welfare for those that enter our country illegally, meanwhile obstructing benefits for

our own citizens. Democrats today are openly enemies of everything that Americans have stood for and fought for and continue to fight for; in short they are One World Communist propagandists. Without exaggeration, the 2020 vote is about your valuable Freedoms. The erosion of your rights, from eating in a restaurant without harassment to protecting your property from unlawful en-

try, protecting your right to bear arms, and keeping free speech for everyone are ALL at stake. If you don’t protect your rights of freedom that you have today, then they will be gone forever. November 3, 2020, is truly a vote for your future! Vote Republican. Francis Muzzey, Wentworth, NH.

MALKIN from 6 riculum materials for “equity training” that all teachers must now undergo. “Growing a deeper sense of cultural consciousness” is now an essential part of the district employees’ job responsibilities. This means accepting an “oppression matrix” chart that classifies all white people as a “privileged social group,” no matter their socioeconomic status, life struggles or family history. Asians are considered “oppressed,” despite vast differences in income among Asian groups and despite higher median net worth and household income than whites. All “males assigned at birth” are inherently more privileged than all “females assigned at birth.” All Protestants are forever more privi-

leged than worshipers of any other faith. All Springfield public school employees must now share “reflections” upon watching a “George Floyd video,” outline “what steps you will take to become an anti-racist” and engage in a “group discussion” on “white supremacy” (but not any other kind of identity politics supremacy). Of course, the definition of “white supremacy” has been stretched to include every microaggression under the sun. “White silence” -- not saying a word, remaining neutral, minding your own business -- now counts as “covert white supremacy,” according to equity training materials. Saying, “all lives matter” is covert white supremacy. So are these unforgivable offenses:

--”Eurocentric curriculum” (that is, any lessons that don’t put nonwhite people above white people at all times in all subject areas). --”Not believing experiences of black, indigenous, and people of color,” (which means never questioning any obvious racial hoaxes and fake hate crimes and never questioning the shady claims of racially ambiguous people that they are what and who they say they are). --”English-only initiatives” (because heaven forbid we demand that non-English-speaking immigrants assimilate and our sovereign nation demand that residents speak the same language as our founders). --”Colorblindness” (because actual antiracism is racism).

We are trapped in a manufactured “oppression matrix” by the most comfortable and protected of liberal elites. Our children are being taught by antiwhite, anti-American “equity” bullies that we are nothing more than the miserable sum of our politicized identities. A great and healthy society would teach its children to be thankful for, not guilty over, the “privileges” so many have worked so hard to pass on to our posterity. SHAPIRO from 6 the side of Joe Biden than the side of journalistic aggressiveness. The last thing they want is getting the blame if Biden somehow blows the White House. This is all deeply dangerous. At a time when our trust in media is already low, the media have thoroughly debunked themselves as neutral arbiters of fact. At a time when social media has consolidated unprecedented power to control the information seen by Americans, social media overseers have decided to bottleneck information they don’t like. Americans rightly distrust the journalistic establishment. They are right, too, to question whether they are being allowed to

read stories that cut against the priorities of Silicon Valley Leftists. The result of journalistic and social media overreach will not be Americans’ quiet acquiescence to the new Informational Elite. It will be frustration and anger. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 29, 2020 — METZLER from 7 less dependent on restive regions. Moreover there’s less likelihood to be pulled militarily into the region for wars and extended commitments. For a long time the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the reviled OPEC oil cartel, had USA industry and consumers over the proverbial barrel hostage to scarcity, price and risk. In 1980, 62% of U.S. petroleum imports came from OPEC; by 2000 it was 45% and by 2019 it fell to 18%! Importantly, U.S. petroleum imports in 2019 were the lowest since 1954, and that’s in a surging powerful pre-pandemic economy! This is one reason why fracking is so vital to domestic energy production. While Washington has dramatically improved its relations with democratic Israel, the Trump Administration has led an amazing outreach to the Arab World, starting with Saudi Arabia, not only to isolate Islamic Iran, but to coax key Arab states to recognize the State of Israel. For the first time in 26 years, Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and now surprisingly even Sudan, a dramatic outlier with a political rap sheet like Iran, all have offered diplomatic recognition to the Jerusalem government courtesy of dogged and focused American diplomacy. This process has created a fundamental shift towards Middle East peace. But the debate did not have a peep about terrorism, Afghanistan, Islamic State or other issues which have dominated American policy concerns

since 2001. Or NATO. How about Cuba and Venezuela? Islamic State, which was originally described as a junior varsity operation by Barack Obama and Joe Biden, grew to seize an area of Iraq the size of Pennsylvania. Occupation, genocide and anti-Christian persecution in 2015 made the Caliphate a major threat to regional stability. Soon after taking office, the Trump Administration unleashed the U.S. military’s terrible swift sword to largely eradicate the Islamic State. Syria? Despite the ongoing civil conflict, the U.S. wasn’t taking the bait for military involvement. Afghanistan poses a different quandary. After twenty years of fighting terrorists where it all started, the Administration plans to finally withdraw the already downsized American troop commitment pending a peace deal with the Taliban. It’s long overdue for the Afghan army to do the heavy lifting to defend their country. The foreign policy lines appear drawn, that’s until there’s a surprise crisis. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. He is author of Divided Dynamism The Diplomacy of Separated Nations; Germany, Korea, China.

STOSSEL from 7 Daily Kos had Clinton at 92%. Huffington Post had 98%. Those two stopped operating after that embarrassment. Silver is one modeler who’s often beaten the market. In 2016, he gave Trump the highest odds, and in 2018, he was the most confident that Democrats would win the House. On the other hand, his FiveThirtyEight model was confident Democrats would win Florida’s and Indiana’s Senate races, making Democrats 70% favorites in both states. But Republicans won. Bettors were closer to predicting the actual results. Bettors do well because they consider many things not easily captured by polls and statistical models. How many mailin ballots do not get counted? In the New York state primary this year, 20% were disqualified for irregularities. FiveThirtyEight “built in an extra layer of uncertainty this year because of the possibility

that the pandemic will disrupt usual turnout patterns.” But bettors believe it’s not enough. Bettors also consider the possibility that polls are wrong in some new way. In 2016, polls showed Clinton well ahead in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, but pollsters hadn’t questioned enough voters without college degrees. Who knows what mistakes pollsters are making now? Betting sites’ track records also do well because bettors invest their own money. That focuses the mind. Today, bettors make other interesting predictions: They say there’s a 56% chance a COVID-19 vaccine will be approved by March 31, and a 22% chance that Trump will pardon himself during his first term. They give 50/50 odds that this year be the hottest year on record. The Kansas City Chiefs (17%) and Baltimore Ravens (13%) have the best chance to win the Super Bowl,

but since their total is only 30%, some other team is likely to win. Back to politics, ElectionBettingOdds.com’s Senate map predicts Democrats will retake the senate, and might even sweep every contested state. If that happens, Democrats would have the power to end the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court and pass their whole agenda with simple majorities. As a libertarian, I sure hope that doesn’t happen. I’ll keep watching the odds at ElectionBettingOdds.com. They update every 5 minutes. BOSAK from 13 nearly 40 of them coming and going in a steady flow nearly all day.” Certainly sounds like something siskins would do. Stock up on thistle (Nyjer) seed if you have siskins visiting. They come in flocks and hang around all day, usually with a few goldfinches mixed in. Siskins and goldfinches are both small birds and have somewhat similar coloration, but look for streaky plumage.
