“Remember Pearl Harbor” by Robert Hanaford Smith, Sr. Contributing Writer

Eighty years after the dreadful event occurred, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor still lives in the minds of Americans as President Franklin D. Roosevelt told us it would. It was on December 7, 1941 that the surprise attack at the harbor in Hawaii housing a United States Navy base took

place. The next day the President addressed the Congress of the United States and called that event a day of infamy. It certainly was not forgotten but was fresh in the minds of Americans three years later when the nation was at war and the newspapers printed the words “Remember Pearl Harbor.” New Hampshire service men were among the casualties of that See REMEMBER on 24

Availability Of Hassan NO PRESSURE, NO GIMMICKS, NO KIDDING! 159 D.W. Hwy, Belmont, NH • 603-524-8821

To The Editor: It is time for Senator Maggie Hassan to make herself available to the voters of New Hampshire. I will make this effort less complicated as I am sure you have a myriad of questions that you would like to address. Direct contact can be made by calling the following numbers: 262 - 224 - 3324 in Washington or if you prefer call her New Hampshire office at 603 - 622 - 2204. If she does not pick up the phone then ask to have her call you back. Another option is to mail a letter to: 59 Pleasant Street, Concord NH 03301 Maggie has been very busy working on the four trillion dollar infrastructure package more appropriately defined as Social Infrastructure. You will love it because there is something there for everyone and best of all it is free. How can you argue with free with money being printed twenty four hours a day. Kenneth Bowers Wolfeboro, NH.

Ready For Tax Increase?

To The Editor: Belknap County Commissioners Peter Spanos, Hunter Taylor and Glen Waring have proposed a budget for county operations for next year that would raise taxes by 37%. No, that is not a typo-- that is actually what they are seeking.

The huge increase in taxes on our citizens, during a period of health crises that caused people to lose their jobs and many businesses to close, is in addition to projected spending by the county of over $9 Million in so-called ARPA funds supplied by the federal government (from our federal tax dollars), would supposedly fund spending of over $33 Million on county operations. Fortunately, the county budget is examined in detail, is subject to modification, and must be finally approved by a vote of the entire county Delegation, consisting of all 18 elected state representatives. The process of severe overreach by the county commissioners is not something new. Last year, the county commissioners proposed a budget for this year that would have raised taxes by 12%, but after many hours of examination and study by the county Delegation, the Delegation finally approved a budget that actually lowered taxes by 11%. As our late beloved Governor, Meldrim Thomson, was wont to say, “Low taxes are the result of low spending.” It was true many years ago when he said it and it remains true today. Norm Silber NH. Rep. Gilford & Meredith Gilford, NH.

Debacle in D.C. To The Editor: Reading Mr. Bowers’ letter in a recent Weirs Times I became furious. Why? Because our so-called leaders here in New Hampshire are not standing up for us. Mr. Bowers wrote an intelligent and factual letter about the failing state of our economy. Every day we hear of proposals and decisions from the Whitehouse that seem incomprehensible. For example, the decision to draw down our Strategic oil reserves for sketchy benefit. Worse, they’re assigning radicals to key governmental positions. Take for example the head of Homeland Security, a rabid advocate for open borders; he’s OK with welcoming non vetted, non Covid tested people into America. Worse, he’s having hordes of these illegals covertly dumped into red states. Our Energy Secretary doesn’t even know our oil consumption rate. Our Transportation Secretary takes Two Months off while the nation’s supply chains crumble. Our President approved a nominee for Comptroller of the Currency who has called for an end to banking as we know it. Makes me wonder how soon one of the new 85 thousand IRS agents they’re hiring will be auditing us Granite Staters. It’s as if the befuddled cartoon character Mr. Magoo is running everything, with Stalin as his chief of staff. See MAILBOAT on 12

What Are Your Financial Resolutions For 2022?

tomorrow. So, this year, resolve to cut down As you know, 2021 was full of challenges. on your existing debts and avoid taking on We were still feeling the effects of the new ones whenever possible. You can motivate COVID-19 pandemic when supply chains yourself by measuring your progress – at the shut down and inflation heated up. So, if beginning of 2022, record your total debts and you’re like many people, you might not be sorry to see the year come to a close. But now then compare this figure to your debt load at the start of 2023. If the numbers have dropped, it’s time to look ahead to a brighter 2022. you’ll know you were making the right moves. And on a personal level, you may want to • Don’t overreact to the headlines. A lot can set some New Year’s resolutions. You might happen during a year. Consider inflation – it resolve to improve your health and diet, and shot up in 2021, but it may well subside in possibly learn some new skills, but why not 2022. If you changed your investment strategy make some financial resolutions, too? last year to accommodate the rise in inflation, Here are a few ideas to consider: • Prepare for the unexpected. If you haven’t already created an emergency fund, now may be a good time to start. Ideally, you’d like to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in this fund, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. (If you’re retired, you may want your emergency fund to contain up to a year’s worth of living expenses.) Once you’ve got this fund established, you may be able to avoid dipping into long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as costly home or auto repairs or large medical bills. • Boost your retirement savings. The pandemic caused many us to reevaluate our ability to eventually enjoy the retirement lifestyles we’ve envisioned. In fact, 33% of those planning to retire soon said they started to contribute even more to their retirement savings during the pandemic, according to a study from Age Wave and Edward Jones. This year, if you can afford it, increase your contributions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. • Reduce your debt load. The less debt you carry, the more money you’ll have available to support your lifestyle today and save and invest for

would you then have to modify it again when prices fall? And inflation is just one event. What about changes in interest rates? How about new legislation coming out of Washington? And don’t forget extreme weather events, such as wildfires and floods. Any or all of these occurrences can affect the financial markets in the short term, but it just doesn’t make sense for you to keep changing the way you invest in response to the news of the day. Instead, stick with a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You may need to adjust this strategy over time, in response to changes in your own life, but don’t let your decisions be dictated by external events.

These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop positive habits that can help you face the future with confidence.

Live Free or Die.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Central Baptist Church of Gilford, NH Independent, KJV

Life Lessons There’s an old expression that goes: “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Being a guy that likes to live more in the moment, I by Brendan Smith am constantly Weirs Times Editor adjusting this expression to fit my needs for the particular moment I am living in. Currently I am looking at each day as the first day of this year’s Christmas shopping season. I like to look at each day as such because, psychologically, when you convince yourself that it is the first day, that means that you make yourself believe that there are many days to follow and, if you are a procrastinating person like myself, then you have plenty of time to get things done. Yes, Christmas shopping is a lot like life itself. Of course, with Christmas shopping, as in life itself, you will stop one day, look in the mirror and say to yourself: “Where in the heck did all of the time go.” It is right about at this point that you will force yourself to sit down and make a comprehensive list of your goals in life moving forward, or what gifts you will need to buy which can be purchased within a five-mile radius of each other since, well, time is now running out. Once you have written down your lists you now need to do some serious contemplation of which direction you will now move. Do you get to work on that novel that has been bouncing around in your head for the past five years? Maybe finally start taking those piano lessons or learning that language? Possibly getting to work developing an eating plan to lose that pesky ten pounds?

entral Baptist hurch

Or do you focus on searching for that elusive unique gift that your wife has been hinting at she’d like for Christmas? After making these lists (a task which helped you procrastinate a little longer) you realize that now is the time to take some action, no matter how painful that might be. You know that there are dreams to realize, work to be done and time is running short. You realize that even though your intentions are good and you are getting down to the nitty gritty (whatever that is), there are still many diversions along the way that may distract you from your goals. In life, as in Christmas shopping (speaking from my own experiences) there is always going to be an electronics store (real or symbolically) that you will have to pass through on your way to the women’s clothing outlet of life. If you can keep your focus and eyes on that real prize, there may still be that 64-inch HD Smart TV, which you know in the first place you really don’t need. In Christmas shopping, as in life, you may put your nose to the proverbial grindstone, no matter how painful it may be, now that you realize time is running out and you need to no work really hard at going after what you want. You ignored the electronics store, and even those cool kiosks with all that weird stuff that seem essential for a few minutes but you know will soon be collecting dust a few weeks after you buy them, and focused on the prize of that unique piece of clothing which is now nowhere left to be seen since the racks have been picked clean by those who got an earlier start then you. You may feel defeated, realizing that you finally gave it all, but all a little too late, and let it bring you down. Or maybe you will just be complacent and settle for second best, that

not so unique piece of clothing that may be met with a less than enthusiastic reception on Christmas morning. Or, you can choose the path less taken, and use the experience as a learning tool. You realize that even though you failed in this endeavor, there will be other opportunities in life, and shopping, to grab that elusive gold ring, or blouse, and that the next time you will be ready, won’t sit back. And will take action and not fall into that “First Day” mentality again that got you into so much trouble in the first place. Next year, you vow, you will get an earlier start. As for me, I am hoping that by writing this insightful article, it will help you overcome your own procrastination in whatever it is in life, or in Christmas shopping, that has held you down over the years. Whether it is finally getting started writing that novel, or just getting it together to get down to the store to buy that item in time. After all, it did take me most of the day to write this and now it is too late for me to go Christmas shopping yet again. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. There Is No Vetting

Back in August, as the Biden administration prepared to dump 82,000-plus Afghan refugees onto U.S. soil, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security assured Americans that it was “working around the clock to conduct the security screening and vetting of vulnerable Afghans before they are permitted entry into the United States” and taking “mulby Michelle Malkin tiple steps to ensure that those seeking Syndicated Columnist entry do not pose a national security or public safety risk.” We were told that “the rigorous screening and vetting process, which is multi-layered and ongoing, involves biometric and biographic screenings conducted by intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism professionals from DHS and DOD, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), and additional intelligence community partners.” Biden’s DHS touted a thorough review of “fingerprints, photos, and other biometric and biographic data for every single Afghan before they are cleared to travel to the United States.” Afghan nationals, we were told, “undergo a primary inspection when they arrive at a U.S. airport, and a secondary inspection is conducted as the circumstances require.” In September, thoroughly vetted Afghan refugee Bahrullah Noori, 20, was charged in Wisconsin with three counts of engaging in sexual acts with a minor, including one allegedly involving the use of force, plus a fourth count of attempting to engage in such acts with a minor while using force. The crimes were allegedly committed against 12- and 14-year-old boys in the bathroom and residential areas of Fort McCoy. It’s the same base where another thoroughly vetted Afghan refugee, Mohammad Haroon Imaad, 32, was charged in early September with assaulting, choking and suffocating his wife. Also in September, a female soldier at Fort Bliss reported being assaulted on Sept. 19 “by a small group of male evacuees at the Dona Ana Complex in New Mexico.” The military base said it was adding “better lighting” to address the attack. No arrests have been made. In October, thoroughly vetted Afghan refugee Zabihullah Mohmand, 19, was charged with raping an 18-year-old girl in Missoula, Montana. This is undoubtedly the tip See MALKIN on 28

An ‘Abundance of Caution’ Mentality Leads to Tyranny This week, governments around the globe spun into full-scale panic thanks to the revelation of the so-called omicron variant of COVID-19. As of this writing, we know that omicron is likely more transmissible than by Ben Shapiro prior variants. We have Syndicated Columnist no evidence, however, that omicron is more deadly. To the contrary, Dr. Angelique Coetzee, chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, explained that the symptoms associated with omicron were “mild,” explaining, “we don’t see severely ill patients.” Were that true, that would make omicron a cause for optimism. That’s because delta is already highly infectious and herd immunity seems to be a pipe dream -- which means that if someone has the choice between an omicron infection and a delta infection, one would wish for the omicron infection. If omicron was to crowd out a deadlier variant, that would be a positive development for global health. Yet the reaction from our institutional leaders has been completely unhinged. We have been told by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that every American above the age of 18 ought to get a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, despite scant evidence that boosters lower the hospitalization and death rates from COVID-19 for the young (they certainly do for those over age 60). Dr. Anthony Fauci has emerged to nod gravely at the possibility of vaccine mandates for air travel and new mask mandates. Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York announced a state of emergency allowing for the suspension of elective surgeries. The predictable result: markets have plunged. They’ve plunged not because of omicron itself, but because the private sector knows that the public sector may hammer away at economic freedom again.

Our political class has failed throughout the pandemic; perhaps their only real success was in assigning a grab bag of cash for pharmaceutical companies that developed vaccines. Other than that, nearly all public policy measures have been ineffective. The same will hold true of omicron. Omicron is already present in nations around the world. Lockdown policies were ineffective in curbing the pandemic outside of isolated countries around the globe; the return of lockdown won’t be any more successful. Mask mandates have been markedly disassociated from actual disease replication rates. And vaccines are already widely available; those who are afraid of omicron will get vaccinated, and those who aren’t won’t. Now would be a good time to take a breath. And yet our public officials are pathologically incapable of humility. This time, they suggest, will be different; this time, they’ll prevent disease from spreading. It seems that the most powerful in our society have a vested interest in the lie that they can stop disease, death and privation. They won’t let go of that lie, lest citizens see through the veil and seize back power over their own lives. Instead, we’re told that we must hand over more control to our authoritarian-minded leaders, to the self-appointed Scientific Experts (TM) -- all out of an “abundance of caution,” of course. Strangely, that abundance of caution never seems to extend to unprecedented interventions in everyday life or the global economy. In those areas, our elites throw caution to the wind. A true “abundance of caution” mentality would suggest that before we destroy our institutions again -- before we overthrow free markets in the name of welfarism, checks and balances in the name of health authoritarianism, and individual liberty in the name of safety -- we see some data. Otherwise, heavy-handed “solutions” will always be the measure of first resort, long before we even know whether a crisis has materialized.

Fact Blockers I’ve reported how Facebook censors me. Now I’ve learned that they also censor environmentalist Michael Shellenberger, statistician Bjorn Lomby John Stossel borg and former Syndicated Columnist New York Times columnist John Tierney. Facebook’s “fact-checkers” claim we spread “misinformation.” In my new video, Tierney argues that the “people guilty of spreading misinformation are Facebook and its fact-checkers.”

He’s right. Facebook doesn’t do its censoring alone. It partners with groups approved by something called the Poynter Institute, a group that claims “a commitment to nonpartisanship.” But Poynter isn’t nonpartisan. It promotes progressive jargon like “decolonize the media,” and it praises left-leaning journalists. Once they even proposed blacklisting conservative news sites. One “fact-checker” Poynter approved is a Paris-based group calling itself “Science Feedback.” Science Feedback objected to an article Tierney wrote that says forcing children to wear masks can be

harmful. He cited a study, which later passed peer-review, in which parents complained about masks “giving their children headaches and making it difficult for them to concentrate.” Facebook calls Tierney’s article “partly false.” That “partly false” label is nasty because it leads Facebook to stop showing Tierney’s work to many people. But his article was accurate. Science Feedback censored it because parents’ comments are not a random sample. But it’s obvious that such comments are not random. Tierney acknowledges that in his article. What should be labeled “false” is Science Feedback’s sloppy fact-

check. It includes a “key takeaway” that says that masks are fine for children over 2. But “that’s not something that most scientists believe,” says Tierney. “Not what the World Health Organization believes.” Again, he’s right. The World Health Organization says kids under 5 should generally not be required to wear masks. “There are all kinds of well-documented effects of wearing a mask,” adds Tierney. “Workers who wear masks for a couple hours in Germany have to stop and take a half-hour break. This shouldn’t be a controversial thing to say.” See STOSSEL on 29

Pearl Harbor Shadows The thunderclap came on an early Sunday morning. Amidst the idyllic and serene Pacific setting of Hawaii, Imperial Japan launched a surby John J. Metzler prise and devasSyndicated Columnist tating attack on the U.S. fleet moored at Pearl Harbor, outside Honolulu. December 7th 1941 would be the date which would live in infamy for shocked and stunned Americans first hearing the news many times zones away from California to Colorado and Connecticut. The USA was now thrust into WWII by an attack few saw coming in the outlying territory of Hawaii. Over 2,400 American servicemen,

mostly U.S. Navy were killed that day; Twenty warships were sunk including the battleship USS Arizona. Four hundred aircraft were wrecked. The U.S. Pacific fleet was badly crippled but importantly not beaten. Eighty years ago, WWII formally started for the United States. Not so well known was that nearly simultaneously after the Pearl Harbor bombing, Japanese forces carried out a coordinated, daring and strategically stunning series of attacks on American bases in the Philippines, Guam and Wake Island as well as the invasion of British Malaya. But let’s scroll back for a moment to a serious but oft overlooked events of December 7th. China was at war already for a decade as Tokyo set its sights to dismember Manchuria. Japan seized

the industrial and strategic Chinese region and turned it into vassal state called Manchukuo. Japan’s moves into Manchuria were greeted by deep concern and diplomatic pushback at the League of Nations in Geneva, but little else. Tokyo got away with it. By 1937 Japanese forces would expand deeper into China; Peking, Shanghai and Nationalist China’s capital Nanking, which would become site of the infamous six week atrocity of the Nanking Massacre. Still the war in China dragged on and the Imperial Japanese Army became bogged down. Japan’s overreach on the China Mainland, and dogged resistance by the Nationalist Chinese forces, took their toll. By Summer 1941 the Roosevelt Administration slapped an American oil and steel Embargo on

Japan which effectively shut off its petroleum jugular line necessary to Tokyo’s military machine. Japan faced a strategic conundrum; either halt offensive operations or break out and seize the oil resources in the Dutch East Indies. An attack and presumed knockout punch on the U.S. Pacific fleet moored at Pearl Harbor in far off Hawaii, became a serious military option and then a near certainty. Across the world, Europe was already in its second year of war since 1939 with the attack on Poland. France was occupied by the Nazis and Britain was under air attack. Hitler’s national socialist regime had already conquered much of Europe but was now facing military operations during its first Russian Winter. See METZLER on 28

Happy Birthday Bill of Rights by Hal Shurtleff Director, Camp Constitution Alton, NH

December 15, 2021, marks the 230th anniversary of the ratification of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution known as The Bill of Rights. When the U.S. Constitution was sent to the states for ratification, some of the ratifying delegates agreed to vote for it if states could propose amendments to the new Congress. James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Noah Webster were among those that believed that a bill of rights was unnecessary since the power granted to the federal government were “few and defined.” Madison changed his position and is credited at the primary author of the Bill of Rights. States submitted 189 proposed amendments which were narrowed down to seventeen proposed by Congress, and twelve were approved by the necessary 2/3rds of the House and Senate. And on September 25, 1789, the amendments were transmitted to the states for ratification. The states ratified ten and they became effective on December 15, 1791. One of the amendments initially rejected, concerning congressional pay raises, was ratified on May 7, 1992. These ten amendments did not give the people any rights; they already had them. The amendments were more of a list of things that the U.S. Government cannot do, and a protection of rights the people already had. The most mis-

understood and misquoted amendment is the 1st. Many people think that the term “separation of church and state” is part of the amendment. It is not. It simply states that Congress cannot establish a church or prohibit the free exercise of religion. When the first amendment was ratified, several states had state churches including Massachusetts and Connecticut. One of the authors of the 1st Amendment was Fisher Ames of Dedham. This is what he said about the Bible in schools: “We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education. We’re starting to put more and more textbooks into our schools. We’ve become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children, containing fables and moral lessons. We’re spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should

be the principal text in our schools. The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any other man-made book.” The 2nd Amendment is another misunderstood amendment. It did not give the people the right to keep and bear arms. The people already had that right. It simply forbade Congress from interfering with the right of free people to be armed. All laws made by Congress that restrict the right to keep and bear arms are unconstitutional. The Constitution listed specific rights and powers. Its critics thought that the rights not listed could be infringed upon, and that is why we have the 9th and 10th Amendments which addressed the issue. It must be pointed out that Presidential executive orders are not laws and unless you are a member of the Biden Administration, you have no duty to obey an executive or-

der. And yes, like the original Constitution, the Bill of Rights has a preamble: THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution. RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all, or any of which Articles, See RIGHTS on 26

tendency, to not work hard and to rely on others. As a result, the leaders of that community recognized not only the failure of their design but a rediscovery of my design as revealed in my word. They initiated my plan, namely that every man would be responsible for their own land and produce, so that if they worked hard, they would prosper but if they didn’t, they would languish. No equality, no safety net but only equal opportunity so that only their efforts would determine their prosperity. As a result of not having a fall back safety net, that the previous system of guaranteed equality provided, and knowing that their life or death was dependent on personal effort and diligent labor, everything changed. The results were astonishing. The whole community flourished and from that point on the establishment of equal opportunity would be promoted for the good of the individual and of all society. That principle made you the greatest and most prosperous nation on the face of the earth. The motivation of life or death being dependent upon self-effort and individual responsibility not equality whereby everything is handed to you, has led you to greatness. But now you are dismantling it. Because of sin and the selfishness of mankind, I established, in the old covenant for my chosen people, a means to provide for the poor or needy who lack the food or resources they

needed for life. But they had to be willing to work for them. I asked those who through hard work prospered with a rich harvest, to not gather all of the produce from the land and particularly the edges of their fields when they harvested their crops (Leviticus 23:22). I asked them to do this so that the poor could collect it and have their needs met. They also had to work hard for their food and if they didn’t, they would remain impoverished and suffer as a result. I promoted equal opportunity not equality. In the new covenant I reminded my people and all who would read the book of Matthew that I, their Creator, would provide for them even as I provide for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26). But just as I do not place the worms into the mouths of the birds, I expect mankind to awaken, preferably early, as the early birds get their worms, and with diligent labor get their food. For those who don’t, they will get little or nothing and suffer as a result. I also instructed my servant Paul to write, that if a man does not work, he shouldn’t be given food to eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10). To do otherwise will breed greater laziness and selfishness and in the end do more harm than good. You yourselves post signs in your national parks not to feed the wildlife, because to do so will make the animals dependent upon human benevolence and ultimately hurt

Letters From God

QUESTION: Should We Be Pursuing Equality Or Equal Opportunity? You are on a dangerous path. That which sounds so good, just and fair is a cloak for rebellion, revolution and power grab. Many in this movement even attribute their philosophy to me, as if I endorse this movement. I do not, because I have not, and so I will not. One of the manifestations of your foolishness is the thinking that everyone, if only given equality, will be equal and society will be without prejudice or inequality. You don’t realize that because of sin, mankind is by nature lazy and looks for every opportunity to prosper, without effort, and benefit from the efforts of others. In light of this malady, to establish as a goal and to pursue equality is foolish, because the sinful tendencies of mankind will sabotage your efforts. When the Pilgrims arrived on your shores looking for the opportunity to worship me, free from the control of state-run religion, they experimented with equality. Every man was given land and then asked to share their abundance with everyone else in a common pool from which everyone could take and prosper. Their project failed miserably because of the sinful

them. Yet you establish systems to do the very thing, not realizing the damage you will do, in making people dependent upon the government and social systems instead of on personal effort. If you love your people, change your policies to reflect my will. Though it sounds hard, it is the most loving way to encourage your people to break the bondage of selfishness and laziness and to build a future that will sustain them and even help others who have genuine needs and are willing to work hard to meet them. It will also break the back of those who use this policy to hold power & influence by making people dependent on them and the government. I love you, God These letters are written by a New Hampshire pastor.

China, Celtics, And Freedom by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

High profiles athletes often make “public service announcements” (PSAs) for this or that. Don’t use drugs. Get vaccinated. Stay in school. Then there is Boston Celtic center Enes Kanter, who perhaps issued the “Mother of all PSAs” when he warned that the Chinese Communist regime’s leader, Xi Jinping, was a “brutal dictator.” Which of course is quite true—though uncomfortable for many NBA folks to hear. The Chinese retaliated by stopping the streaming of Celtic games. But they’ve done far worse, to include infecting the world with COVID viruses, quashing freedom in Hong Kong, committing genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority, and threatening world war over its Taiwan policies. And certainly the forced abortions of millions of female Chinese fetuses were quite “brutal”—to use Kanter’s word. But the NBA has extensive financial arrangements with the Chinese. And Nike and other companies profit from exploiting China’s workforce. So one criticizes China at one’s own peril. Former Houston Rocket executive Daryl Morey found out the hard way when he tweeted his support for

Enes Kanter Freedom Hong Kong residents victimized by Chinese thuggery. With no appreciation or understanding of free speech, the Chinese raised hell and NBA toadies came down hard on …. Daryl Morey! NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, superstar LeBron James and others showed their true colors, which were greenish in nature— not Celtic green but the color of money. They clearly sought to placate their Communist friends in China, as they later did with BLM Marxists. But the negative public response to its horrific appeasement caused the NBA to try to walk things back. Silver acknowledged that “our initial statement left people angered, confused, or unclear on who we are or what the NBA

stands for.” Duh! Many folks seek to separate politics from sports. Celtic fans of all ideological stripes go to the Garden to see the world’s best hoopsters— not BLM logos. But sometimes players and fans must open their eyes to things beyond box scores, standings, or trading deadlines. Are the likes of the NBA, Nike, et al morally complicit by partnering with the vile Chinese regime? Many think so. And some say so. Like Enes Kanter. Kanter, who once grabbed 30 rebounds in a game, has also taken shots at Turkish strongman Recep Erdogan, another thug. The problem for Kanter is that he is of Turkish descent. So the Turks put out an arrest warrant for him.

But of far more concern is the fact that Kanter has innocent family and friends in Turkey who are now at risk. If nothing else, all this should help remind us of the precious freedom we have in America. And speaking of “Freedom,” that’s Kanter’s new name. When he became an American citizen on November 29, he legally changed his name to Enes Kanter Freedom. Pro athletes are often cited for their “courage,” whether it involves playing on a sprained ankle or admitting to a substance abuse problem. But if you want to ponder a real sports “Profile in Courage” then look no further than Enes Kanter Freedom. The Boston Celtics have retired a record 23 numbers, and I can name the player associated with each number. They’re my heroes. But the next time I’m at the Garden I’ll purchase a shirt with the unretired number of “13.” That’s Freedom’s number. COACH McDONNELL Sean Patrick McDonnell—the head football coach at UNH since before the turn of the century—has retired at age 66. His gridiron success with the Wildcats is welldocumented and I won’t include his impressive numbers here. My recollections of McDonnell, interestingly, involve basketball and housepainting in Manchester. See MOFFETT on 27

Bird Photography by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

A snowy owl at a Connecticut beach caused a big rift among birdwatchers last month. Many people were posting its location and others felt it was inappropriate and dangerous to the bird to post its whereabouts. On top of that, many people took exception to some photographers who were getting too close and being too aggressive with their craft. I wasn’t there to see the bird or the behavior of the spectators, but I have certainly seen aggressive photographers before and most definitely do not condone their behavior. However, I have also seen non-photographers get annoyed at photographers for no legitimate reason. Like most situations, the truth is likely somewhere in the middle and dependent upon where you fall in the “how close is too close” spectrum. I found myself in the vicinity of the beach last week and couldn’t resist trying to find the owl. It had been seen and photographed reliably for about two weeks before my visit. In fact, I met a birder in the parking lot that morning who had seen the owl the previous day. As I’m sure you can guess by now, the owl was not there the day

MAINE LICENSED & CERTIFIED MEDICAL CANNABIS CAREGIVER • • • • • A snow bunting picks seeds from a weed on a New England beach last month. I went to look for it. At least it wasn’t where I could see it, nor any of the other birdwatchers looking for it. I walked the length of the beach and came up empty. But all was not lost. As I wrote a few weeks ago, sometimes the greatest enjoyment of a bird walk, or any walk for that matter, is in the search. Such was the case on this occasion as I did come across a sizable flock of snow buntings and a few large mixed flocks of sanderlings and dunlin. The buntings were my favorite part of the trip. They took off as

a flock and landed as a flock wherever they went. Usually, it was to a patch of weeds where the birds teetered precariously on the tops and picked out the dried seeds. As is almost always the case with bird photography, patience paid off for me. I had planted myself near a patch of grasses in the hopes that the flock would land in it. Sure enough, about 10 minutes later, around 20 snow buntings landed about 10 yards away from me and started hunting for seeds. See BOSAK on 13

Who can fix this? The House and Senate could. But the New Hampshire DC contingent won’t lift a finger. Why? Our four elected NH Democrats serving in DC; Hassan, Shaheen, Pappas and Kuster virtually always vote the way Nancy and Chuck tell them to. They brag about deliv-

ering $1.139 billion for NH Highway programs from Biden’s Infrastructure bill. Sounds good right? Except when we learn that New Hampshire received the smallest portion of any State from this immoral largess. Will this liberal quartet from New Hampshire fix inflation? Will

they reduce the cost of heating our homes, filling up our cars? No! None of this is on the Dem’s agenda. I actually think they don’t care. Their alliance is clearly not to us! Granite Staters have to wake up to the failure of our four DC Democrats. You name it; the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, the billions in state-of-theart military equipment

Soon we’ll not recognize our beautiful State or our Country for that matter if we don’t stop voting for destructive, partisan Democrats. Our taxes will continue to go up along with inflated costs for everything. Incomes won’t sustain the ever increasing costs of essential goods and services. BOSAK from 11 It was interesting to watch their behavior. Some looked on the ground and some perched on the weed stalks to look for their meal. Snow buntings are winter birds for New England. They breed in the Arctic and move south each winter. They are most commonly found on or near beaches, but they may be seen in other habitats on occasion as well. They are not feeder birds, but I have had reports of people seeing them in their yards in New Hampshire. If you live on the coast, sanderlings are probably not that big of a deal to you. But if you make only oc-

casional trips to the shore, like myself, sanderlings are cause for excitement. Throw in some dunlin and the scene gets that much better. The snowy owl eluded me, which is fine as I have seen and photographed snowy owls before. I am thankful for the other birds that were there, however, as that made the trip to the beach well worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey, even if I never got to the destination. Chris Bosak may be reached at chrisbosak26@gmail.com or through his website www.birdsofnewengland.com

Trees were donated by growers from both states and by regional businesses, schools and individuals. Each year fifth grade students from the Bethlehem Elementary School help tag and load the trees for shipping. Over 450 trees were loaded by the volunteers into a FedEx trailer for ultimate delivery to military bases in Georgia. The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, the charitable branch of the National Christmas Tree Association, and FedEx have partnered on this effort to boost the Christmas spirit for U.S. military men and women. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the program where Christ-

mas tree growers and retailers have donated real Christmas trees to be distributed at military bases in the U.S. and overseas. Since the program began over 260,000 trees have been donated. The trees reach those serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and National Guard. For more information about “Trees for Troops”, visit Christmas Spirit

Brighten Someone’s Holiday Season With Christmas Cactus

by Melinda Myers The holidays have arrived and so has the Christmas cactus. Set this favorite holiday plant in a basket, decorative pot or foil wrap and it will be ready to give as a gift or add to your holiday décor. With proper care this holiday favorite can flower for four to eight weeks and grow for decades, becoming a family heirloom handed down from one generation to the next. The plant sold as a Christmas cactus may actually be a Thanksgiving cactus. The true Christmas cactus blooms later and has small segments with rounded edges. The Thanksgiving cactus, though often sold as the Christmas cactus, has toothed or jagged segments and typically blooms prior to Christmas. Fortunately, their growing requirements and care are basically the same so the plants will do fine no matter the name on the label. These, or hybrids of the two plants, flower with cool nights and long uninterrupted dark periods. A third holiday plant, the Easter cactus, sets flowers in spring as the days start to lengthen. ganic well-drained potting mix for best results. Water thoroughly and pour off the excess that collects in the saucer to avoid root rot. Reduce maintenance and improve the growing con-

ditions with the help of gravel trays. Place a layer of pebbles, decorative stones or marbles in the saucer or bottom of the foil wrap or basket. The pot will be elevated above any excess water that collects in the pebbles. As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plant. Keep your flowering cactus in a cool bright location to extend its bloom time. Avoid drafts of hot and cold air, moisture stress and other changes in the environment that can cause buds and flowers to drop. Fertilize with a dilute solution of flowering houseplant fertilizer once it has finished blooming and throughout spring and summer as needed. Grow your cactus in a north-facing window or set back from an east- or west-facing window where it receives bright indirect light throughout the year. Too much sun turns the See CACTUS on 18

CACTUS from 17 leaf segments dark red. Don’t be anxious to move these plants to a bigger container. They prefer to be somewhat potbound and can remain in the same pot for years. Encourage a new flush of flowers with cooler night temperatures around 55 to 60 degrees and slightly drier soil. An uninterrupted dark period will also help promote flowering. Start the dark treatment in early to mid October for holiday flowers. Cover the plants or move them to a location free of any artificial light, indoors or outside, each night and provide bright indirect light each day. Any interruption in the

dark period from outdoor, street or reading lights can delay or prevent flowering. Many experts find providing the same dark treatment as poinsettias, 14 hours of dark each night, promotes flowering. Michigan State University recommends providing 16 hours of total darkness and eight hours of light for at least eight days to promote flowering. PATENAUDE from 3 their snowmaking snowguns. I was giddy knowing I would be skiing there in just a few days. The bright white White Mountains glistened in the morning sun. Thankfully there was just a breath of wind and it didn’t feel too cold. We remarked that it takes a few times of getting out in the cold to get used to the feeling of winter. On the summit of Eisenhower I decided to change into my thicker fleece red gloves and discovered that I had brought along two left gloves. I had reorganized my backpack contents for winter but I missed this detail. It was cold and clear and we enjoyed the view of the surrounding mountains. This outing felt like winter and looked like winter. Getting off of Eisenhower towards Mt. Pierce wasn’t easy because the ice was hard and thick. We took our time to step carefully but we both still

The ten essentials and more are a must for winter hiking---for winter I carry an extra hat & mittens, my save-my-life extra warm jacket, insulated pants, goggles, foam pad and micro-spikes/snowshoes. Becca on the Edmands Path with the stunning Presidential Mountains rising above her. Our point to point hike over Mount Eisenhower and Mount Pierce was just under 8 miles. PATENAUDE from 20 Becca guessed higher. I found a micro-spike in the snow between ice patches and I went running back to the man that last passed us. He had not realized that it had come off and was mighty thankful that I had returned it. He certainly would have noticed as soon as he hit the ice on Eisenhower. At the intersection there was a gal standing there waiting for a friend behind her. I told her not to move. When I got to her and stepped off the Crawford Path I explained she would have been number 13 and I would have lost the bet. My guess that we would meet 12 people on the Crawford Path between the peaks was perfect. Becca would have won if she took a couple more steps forward. After tagging the

next hike! A few days later I went skiing at Bretton Woods for my first time downhill skiing this season. It was a joy to ride the gondola to the summit and ski top to bottom. The snow conditions were packed powder thanks to a snowstorm a few days prior. The snow was well groomed too. Bretton Woods is making more snow and opening more trails nearly daily. While I was there it was cold and cloudy but still good visibility for skiing. Down below I could see as far as the bright red roof of the Omni Mount Washington Hotel but not beyond the hotel. The clouds hid Mount Washington and its neighboring mountains. See PATENAUDE on 23

pan thus declared war upon the United States of America, and, at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress responded with the same on the day after the attack, Dec. 8, 1941. Germany and Italy declared war on the United States a few days later on December 11th. As the war unfolded and American servicemen went to the seas and over the seas to fight for the survival of their country, Americans at home went about their normal activities as well as they could while adjusting their lives to do whatever they could to support the troops. Nearly three years after “Pearl Harbor” the November 30, 1944 issue of the Bristol Enterprise included a number of items of Thanksgiving gatherings at different homes. There were some names I recognized, including some who attended a four-way celebration at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dow in Winona. Besides celebrating Thanksgiving with

a bountiful meal, a birthday cake was enjoyed along with cards and gifts for Mrs. Lillian Plummer, another cake was provided in recognition of Mr. & Mrs. Dow’s 35th wedding anniversary, and Pfc Howard Dow was home on furlough. Lillian Plummer’s husband, Gordon, and ther children, Pauline and Freeman, were among those attending that gathering. During the war, including that year of 1944, newspapers included letters sent home by the servicemen who were fighting for the United States. Mrs. Lawrence A. McKinley of Bristol received a letter from her son, Sgt. Lawrence A. McKinley Jr., which was dated Nov. 14, 1944, coming from Italy. It read: “Dear Mom: How goes the battle? I am coming along O.K. And I hope you are also. You have probably received a notice from the War Department that I am seriously wounded. Well, Mom, I am still in one piece. I got hit in my See REMEMBER on 25

Not long ago I received a phone call from a person who appeared to be calling under false pretenses, to use an older phrase. After I advised him to get an honest job he replied that he

wasn’t doing what he was doing because he liked it. Though many Americans have gone to war, doing so bravely and honorably, I don’t imagine that many persons go into battle because they like it. Most probably hate it, but when something like the attack on Pearl

Harbor is launched by a nation that wants to destroy and conquer, then responding with might seems right. Heroes are made and the folk at home sacrifice in an effort to bear some of the load. Remember Pearl Harbor!

Lots of Love and Kisses. Nig. (Sgt. Lawrence A. George C. Woodward of Bristol, and his wife, who was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Guy Davis of New Hampton were among the latter group. He was stationed at San Pedro in California and she worked for the Navy Department there.” The Dec. 7, 1944 issue of The Bristol Enter-

prise came out on Pearl Harbor Day and Mrs. Flora Libby, one of the New Hampton correspondents, noted that “This is one day we are working hard to avenge. As long as we continue to co-operate a victorious end is in view.” Some of the servicemen stationed in “the States” were guarding prisoners of war. Such was the case with Sgt. Chester (Chet) Wells of Bristol. In a letter to Rev. A.B. Thompson he revealed that he had received a letter from his “...old unit and they are now in the Philippines and some of them have already been killed and I often think how lucky we fellows are and we should not find fault with our work here.” He continued, “I’m stationed a couple of miles from the town of Houlton and a five minutes walk from the Canadian border. I’m working in the stockade as supply sergeant for one of the companies of German prisoners. I have a 20-year old German working with me. He does most of the work and can speak very good English. I’m supposed to see that they have clothing, and supplies to keep their barracks clean. This

past week I’ve had to take head count at six in the morning and at seven at night.” He went on to say that most of the prisoners were very young but could speak three or four languages. Most of his fellow soldiers, he said, did not like Houlton because it was a dry town and they

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, December 9, 2021 — MOFFETT from 10 I was teaching and coaching at Trinity High School while McDonnell was an assistant football coach at West High School. We both played on separate teams in a couple local basketball leagues. Our respective teammates were like us, in their mid-twenties, at their physical peaks, and extraordinarily competitive. Our hardcourt battles were bitterly contested. As a basketball player, McDonnell deployed many of the gridiron skills that made him a UNH star a few years earlier—if you get my drift. No quarter was asked or given and city league basketball became a contact sport. But mutual respect developed and one of McDonnell’s teammates hired us to paint houses during the summer of 1982. While doing various paint projects

McDonnell shared his dream of becoming a collegiate head football coach. I was skeptical but he eventually pulled it off and UNH and the Granite State are the better for it. Lucky Sanborn Jr., 9 It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Lucky Sanborn Jr. passed away on Tuesday, November 30th, after a sudden illness. Lucky was 9 years old. Born on October 1, 2012, Lucky was a ham from day one. Always ready with a regal pose and a love for the spotlight, Lucky was clearly bound for stardom. The camera loved him and he loved his fame, which brought him thousands of fans, both locally and across the nation. It became apparent that, with his gentle and quiet demeanor, Lucky was naturally destined to become a service animal. He loved to visit Roger Cabana and his other friends at the NH Veterans Home. He traveled to cancer centers and ICU's from the Lakes Region to Boston and places in between, comforting those who needed comfort and bringing joy and laughter to everyone he had the pleasure of meeting. Nurses on the front lines of the pandemic, looked forward to Lucky's visits, as he brought happiness and comic relief to their stressful environment. Because of his devastatingly good looks and spirit of cooperation with the camera, Lucky's fame grew as he became a regular on the pages of The Laconia Daily Sun. Graphic artist, Patty, and copywriter, Karin, helped to introduce the many facets of Lucky's personality to fans across the country. Huggins Hospital was a fan club on it's own, and Lucky so appreciated his friends there. Eventually, as the demand for more Lucky grew, the annual calendar was born. Each month would bring a new, entertaining scene, photographed by Lucky's dear friend and personal photographer, Ian Raymond. The calendar allowed Lucky to forge lasting friendships with many local celebrities, including Laconia's

beloved Mayor, Ed Engler, Funspot's Bob Lawton and Governor Chris Sununu. Both developed special bonds with Lucky. One of Lucky's favorite things to do was to ring the Salvation Army bell with his close friend, Ed Engler. They would compete to see who could get more people to donate. Lucky usually won, but they both treasured that special time together.

Lucky was always on the lookout for a camera. At the Governor's Annual Easter Egg Roll in front of the State Capitol, while parade characters were posing for a news photographer, Lucky waltzed up and plopped himself down in front of them as if to say "here I am!" This great, impromptu shot landed in the calendar. On another occasion, while photographer Ian and Lucky were doing a calendar photoshoot at Heritage Farm Pancake House in Sanbornton, they stumbled upon Governor Sununu. Never to pass a great photoop by, Lucky began posing with the Governor while a group of national reporters snapped away. That was Lucky, and every one of the thousands of pictures taken of him had a story behind it. On September 21, 2021, after several years of trying, Lucky and his lovely bride Daisy became the proud parents of 5 beautiful little ones. Every single one of the babies looks exactly like their father. It remains to be seen if any of the wee ones will have the patience and discipline to carry on their father's service to others. At this stage, they have enough trouble containing their boundless energy. Lucky leaves behind his wife Daisy Day Sanborn whom he married at the Belknap Mill in their first ever doggie wedding ceremony; his three sons, Bear, Diamond and Smoky; his two daughters, Duchess & Dusty; Mum Ginny, and a multitude of other family and friends from the Lakes Region and beyond. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 18, from 11am 2pm, at Funspot. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lucky's memory to the NH Veterans Home (www.nh.gov/ veterans/support), Happy Tails Dog Park (htdpnh.org/donations) or FUNds4Paws (funds4paws.org) or your local shelter. Condolences can be emailed to lucky@laconiadailysun.com

MALKIN from 6 of the iceberg, given my past reporting on more than 60 refugee-jihadists (“refujihadis”) who slipped past our “rigorous” and “thorough” vetting system over the past decade. In my long experience, independent efforts to track criminal arrests of refugees and immigrants are stymied by politically correct media whitewashers who obscure the national origin and citizenship status of suspects. How much of an illusion is the “multilayered,” “biometric” and “biographic” vetting of Afghan refugees? Over the holidays, with almost zero news coverage outside the Washington Examiner and New York Post, a Senate Republican memo reported that

“almost none of the 82,000 people airlifted from Kabul in August were vetted before being admitted to the United States, despite claims to the contrary from the Biden administration.” The memo reportedly noted that “Afghans without any identification or records were approved for travel to the United States as long as their fingerprints or other biometrics were not already in a U.S. Government database and connected to derogatory information (e.g., a known terrorist, terrorist affiliate, or criminal). Federal officials relayed that few Afghans know their birthday, which has resulted in a number of evacuees’ date of birth logged as January 1.” In October, The Wall

Street Journal reported that Republican lawmakers had been pressing the Biden administration on “how many Afghans traveled without any paperwork.” No answers yet. Tick tock. Andrew R. Arthur of the Center for Immigration Studies makes a good point about how federal officials admitted they didn’t have any training, anyway, in identifying phony Afghan documents from real ones: “What good would a requirement that evacuees provide identity documents do if those reviewing the documents cannot tell good ones from fake ones?” In early November, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, revealed in a floor speech that “there are at least 10 evacuees who made it

past all this screening into the United States prior to the national security concerns being raised and causing them currently to be detained in federal facilities as a national security threat. That’s 10. We don’t know how many more there are.” Open borders plus bleeding hearts equal a demographic nightmare. Homeland security is a joke. There is no vetting. When will you learn, America? METZLER from 7 But America remained on the sidelines no more. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USA was thrust into conflict. Nonetheless even in the lead up to war, the U.S. military was woefully unprepared. President Franklin D Roosevelt favored a policy of strong rhetoric rather than proper military preparedness. Yet later what FDR called the “arsenal of Democracy” ensured the vast industrial and productive capacity of American industry could turn a peacetime consumer economy into a fearsome War machine. In Detroit, civilian auto production ended in 1941 and by 1942, the factories were turning out trucks and tanks. Fast forward to more recent times. On September 11, 2001, the USA faced what I still

call The “Pearl Harbor Moment” of this generation. The seemingly endless “War on Terror” remains far from over but has largely neutralized the direct threat of Islamic extremism to the U.S. Now again in East Asia dark clouds gather as the People’s Republic of China flexes its political muscles, strengthened by a generation of trade and technology transfer from the U.S. which enhanced Beijing’s military capacity and its economic bottom line. As with the world in the 1930’s the warning signs abound; contemporary threats of communist China’s expansion in the South China Sea and it’s bullying of democratic Taiwan. All this comes amid the troubling backdrop of a declining U.S. Navy in size and strength. Eighty years ago Pearl Harbor became a jolting wake up call to the USA. Millions of Americans served in the military to turn the tide of Axis aggression both in Europe and the Pacific. One such man, Senator Bob Dole (R-Kansas) was counted among the Greatest Generation. Soldier, Senator and Statesman, Bob Dole, who died at 98, was gravely wounded in Italy and carried that obvious burden throughout his amazing career in the Senate and a run for the Presidency. Senator Dole always knew the price of freedom. Few of his generation are still around to remember. John J. Metzler is a United Nations correspondent covering diplomatic and defense issues. — THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, December 9, 2021 — STOSSEL from 7 No, it shouldn’t. Facebook often censors things that should be talked about. They banned discussion of the idea of that COVID-19 escaped from a lab, only reversing course when the Biden administration did. Science Feedback also doesn’t like articles questioning the “climate crisis.” That’s what got Shellenberger punished. “They censored me for saying we’re not in a sixth mass extinction,”

Shellenberger complains. “We’re not! Lomborg was censored for pointing out “rising temperatures have actually saved lives.” That’s because cold weather kills more people than warm weather. No scientific study has yet proven that a recent drop in deaths was caused by the temperature rise. But so what? His main point -- temperature-related deaths fell while the planet warmed -- is true.

Yet Science Feedback works with Facebook to keep that out of your Facebook feed. Lomborg says the “fact-checkers” want people alarmed by climate change. “It makes it a lot easier to get people to donate money. Science Feedback’s leader now plans to expand his censorship powers -- so he can censor not only Facebook, but other social media. That’s frightening. I sympathize with Facebook. Some users spread lies. Politicians

blame Facebook and demand the company “do something.” But there’s no way Facebook can police all the posts, so it does destructive things like partnering with Poynter Institute “fact-checkers.” The fact-checkers “have a mission outside just facts,” says Lomborg. “They also want you to not know stuff. That’s not fact check. That’s simply saying, ‘We don’t want to hear this opinion in the public space.’ Frankly, that’s terrify-

ing ... The goal is nice ... less misinformation on the internet. But you could very well end up in a place where we only have approved facts that fit the current narrative. That would be a terrible outcome.” But that’s the outcome we’ve got. Facebook and its censors are now the enemy of open debate. “They’re trying to suppress people whose opinions and whose evidence they don’t like,” concludes Tierney. “They’re not fact-

checkers, they’re factblockers.” The world doesn’t need fact-blockers. We need more freedom to speak, not less.
