In a cookbook, what are the major things that people look for, what helps them, and what confused them read a recipe?

9

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

E/G/G is a cookbook about egg dishes with the idea that cooking a dish is like constructing a building. Combining my experience in the kitchen and the similarities between architecture and cooking, I used rules and charts to create the look and feel for the cookbook. I also used the three-ring binder which is often used in construction project.

How can we easily analyze the food we eat to avoid allergic reactions and maintain good eating habits?

25

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

Food Lab is an application for diet control. With the thinking that everything is composed of atoms and can be analyzed in a lab. The design of the app is focused on how to create a convenient and clear application. I chose different colors to distinguish the safety or health factors between different ingredients. Since Food Lab is an app about eating, I tried to give it a fresh and appetizing feel.

How can we rebrand for a charter school that helps to educate prisoners in jail? How can we help the school expand its services through a comprehensive design?

43

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

The rebranding of Five Keys Charter Schools and Programs is a group project which worked with an actual client who planned a rebrand for their expanding business. Our visual system is based on the stationery system designed by Ming Lang Jiang. We designed the visual system with a brand book, applications, and a website. All the visuals were made to stay stable and strong. To give it an energetic feeling, we chose a bright blue as the main color.

Next Conference

04 / 08

After decades of research, virtual reality has finally become a mature technology. But, how does it work and how might VR influence people in the next few years?

61

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

The Next conference would be an event which introduces virtual reality as an approachable pop science. Also, it is a new platform for people who are researching and working with virtual reality to communicate with each other. Promotional materials for Next are designed with concepts about how human beings define reality. In the design, I used all the senses and show how virtual reality can work with each of these senses. In the end, Next shows how virtual reality adds to or changes reality.

Taiwanese Identity

05 / 08

Why is it so difficult for Taiwanese to talk about their identity? Is it because of their different cultural or historical backgrounds, levels of education, political views, or is it something else?

87

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

The Taiwanese Identity is a project shows how different people's opinions about their identity are based on their age, education level, and political background. In my design, I used green and blue which represent the two biggest political parties in Taiwan as main visual elements. The historical background of Taiwan started after World War II. This inspired me to use documentary elements in my design. In the end, I used gradients to show the transition of identity from one generation to the next.

Refresh Music Festival

06 / 08

How to make people get closer to nature? What could create the motivation for people to do more for our planet?

105

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

The Refresh Music Festival is trying to get people out of their cities and into nature. While people are enjoying the beauty of nature, it also reminds them how pollution has changed our environment. To show a refreshing feeling, I used colors and textures from nature. Also, to create an organic aesthetic I used handwriting type. This is exemplified by the imperfect circle representing the shape of a tree ring, showing the idea of the cycle of natural systems.

It's Alive!!!

07 / 08

How to create a visual system for an exhibition? What is important to show and how to make it gets people's attention?

121

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

It's Alive!!! is a project to promote a coming exhibition for the unique art crafts called Strandbeests. They are artificial creatures made by the German artist Theo Jansen. As artwork, Strandbeests appear strong with interesting exteriors to look at. I made the design focus more on the creatures than visual elements around them.

According to a study, the average American spends fifty-five minutes a day looking for things. How can people save their time and money by not doing this kind of endless, frustrating searching?

133

Q&A

Terry Hsu

A.

Dot is a tracking sticker that helps people to find and secure their stuff. The project is about promoting this product with the design. Since Dot uses an alarm as its primary feature, I chose red to be the main color to represent the sound of the alarm. I also created a series of posters, a logo, and a tiny booklet for the promotional material campaign.
