The effects of the Coronavirus on the college were immense. Yet God has faithfully led, showing us at every step of the way that He is holding this institution in the palm of His hand. Given the difficulty of our circumstances, I am in awe of the way God has protected Welch, placing us in a solid position to weather the COVID-19 storm and come out strongly positioned for the most successful era of mission fulfillment and growth the college has ever experienced.

2021 PRESIDENT'S REPORT
THE 2020–21 FISCAL YEAR WAS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING YEARS IN WELCH’S HISTORY.

FINANCES

Welch College did well financially, given the present unforeseen circumstances. Had we been able to meet with key donors in 2020 and much of 2021, and had the pandemic not impaired our largest potential donors’ ability to make planned large gifts, we would have had the best twelve months financially that Welch has ever experienced.

Had the pandemic not depleted our enrollment by 15%, we would have had the largest enrollment in 37 years. Still, owing to budget cuts, careful management of spending, and federal relief/stimulus aid, we had a deficit of just under $100,000. This is much better than the $765,000 deficit we projected in our 2020–21 budget.

INCREASING ACADEMIC REPUTATION

Our new name (still “new” in terms of higher education branding and positioning) and especially our new campus continue to posture us to leverage our growing reputation as a regionally accredited, Great Commission-oriented college that is strong on conservative, traditional values and is highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report.

Last year we maintained our solid ranking in that publication and for the first time were ranked as one of only three “A+ Colleges for B Students” in our category of 122 institutions. The first time Welch appeared in this ranking, in 2010, we ranked 54th, and even that was in the top half of all the Southern schools ranked in the Regional Colleges South category. So in eleven years we’ve gone from 54th to our ranking of 18th for 2021. To put this in perspective, the next ten colleges in the list that Welch outranked had an average enrollment more than five times our enrollment and an average endowment almost nine times our endowment.

Welch received especially high marks in five strategic areas. Compared to the other 121 institutions in the Regional Colleges South category, Welch ranked:

• 2nd in student-faculty ratio

• 3rd in students who were in the top 25% of their high school graduating class

• 5th in the percentage of classes under 20 students

• 5th in graduation rate

• 8th in first-year student retention rate

• 8th in alumni giving rate

We recently learned that we have been ranked 8th for the

2022 edition. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, our new campus is impressive to prospective students and their parents. We won a second architectural award from the nationally reputed Learning By Design magazine.

These considerations will outlive the current crisis, bringing enrollment growth. The launch of Welch Divinity School and the new M.Div. program, which we worked on the entire year last year and opened in August, is just the tip of the iceberg of the new programs and enrollment growth we envision, which will enhance our competitive position. Despite our losses in enrollment last year owing to COVID-19, we are still among the top colleges and universities in the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) in terms of five-year enrollment growth. Our growth rate is still strong in terms of traditional collegeage students, not just adult, graduate, and professional programs like most TICUA schools.

Despite COVID-19, we still had a higher enrollment than in 28 out of the last 37 years. Other measures of our public's confidence in our quality include average ACT scores, percent of legacy students (children of alumni) enrolled (more than twice the number of most Christian colleges and universities), and the number of alumni who financially support the college each year (top 7% in our category).

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

We continue to increase our academic excellence as an institution. Our percentage of earned doctorates—70%—has doubled in recent years. The new faculty ranking system we recently instituted will drive this percentage higher. Our student evaluations of classroom teaching look better than they have at any time during my presidency. Our students and graduates laud their professors for combining academic excellence with personal, spiritual mentoring. 2019 graduate Matt Honeycutt, pastor of Harper Road Free Will Baptist Church in Joelton, Tennessee, for example, recently said:

The faculty were excellent. You had confidence walking into a class, knowing that these teachers were highly trained from great universities. They’re here, and they’re giving us that knowledge, passing it on to us. They genuinely cared about what we were learning. They wanted us to grasp the content. They wanted us to grow in our spirituality. They wanted us to grow in our knowledge of Jesus, to grow more intimately in our love for Him. I still have those relationships that carry over today. I still speak to the professors and have built friendships with them. That connection is always there. I have been able to contact them with questions I have, and they’ve been able to get back with me in a reasonable amount of time.

2021 ARCHITECTURAL AWARD Learning By Design Magazine

Faculty performance is the most direct indicator of retention, and our freshman-to-sophomore retention is continuing to climb, nearing the 80% mark. This is uncommon at institutions like ours that have an academically open enrollment policy, which tend to be closer to 50%, as we used to be.

We are also increasing our number of academic offerings. The new Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and undergraduate concentrations in special education, math education, and computer science, as well as the Spanish Ministry Institute, are off to a good start. Earlier this spring, we added a new Theater concentration to the B.A. in Humanities and Arts.

WELCH DIVINITY SCHOOL

Our main new initiative, which has taken up much time and energy this past year, is the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree in the newly established Welch Divinity School. As with all new academic programs, it will take a while to get this program off the ground, especially in light of COVID-19, but it will bear more and more fruit in future years. We are amazed at how many of our bachelor’s degree students are interested in continuing on to the M.Div. through the accelerated B.A.-to-M.Div. program made possible by the nearly $500,000 grant from a private foundation.

MORE MINISTERIAL STUDENTS

A common topic of recent conversation in the evangelical community is the need for more ministers to replace the aging Baby Boomers who are retiring from active pastoral ministry. Over the past few years, Welch has been discussing the need to attract more ministerial students. This is difficult because fewer young men are answering the call to ministry in high school.

Furthermore, many who have answered the call to preach cannot afford Welch. So they choose a community college, saying they are going to come to Welch their junior and senior year. But few of those who attend community colleges follow through and enroll at Welch.

For this reason, Welch initiated a new $10,000-peryear scholarship for Free Will Baptist preachers. These students must be Free Will Baptists who want to pursue ordination and who will major in the full pastoral ministry or youth and family ministry programs with full systematic theology and biblical language requirements. This new scholarship has met with success. We have already doubled our number of on-campus, traditional, degree-seeking students pursuing ministry. In fact, this area was one of the few that increased in enrollment during the pandemic. Because of our downturn in

enrollment owing to COVID-19, all other majors, except for Music, Humanities and Arts, and Math Education, saw a decrease in enrollment.

STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT

Other strategic developments that posture us for future growth, in addition to the new academic programs discussed above, include (1) the completion of Strategic Plan 2020–2030; (2) the increase of the college’s endowment from around $3.4 million to around $4.5 million; (3) favorable reports from the ten-year visiting teams from our accreditors, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) Commission on Accreditation, as well as the Tennessee State Department of Education; and (4) the first graduates of the joint Nursing Program (B.S.N.) with Union University, all of whom have jobs lined up after graduation and have met with rave reviews.

MISSION-DRIVEN

More important than the increase in excellence and reputation the college is experiencing is our continued laser-like focus on our distinctive mission at Welch. Recently Welch hosted ten-year reaffirmation visits of both of our accrediting agencies. The ABHE visiting team gave Welch a formal commendation on its

commitment to its mission of Christ-centered higher education and the way that mission is integrated throughout the institution and is understood not just by the Board and Administration, but by faculty, staff, and students. The ABHE vice president stated that this a rare commendation from ABHE.

This commendation evidences our distinctiveness as an institution. Welch is driven by a commitment to the Bible, its worldview, and its integration into every area of life—how we think, how we feel, and how we live.

Thus a Welch education is centered on helping students to think Christianly, to feel deeply about God’s truth— about the whole counsel of God. Yet it also helps students to apply that to life—to their own spiritual formation, to their bearing witness to the gospel, to

“WE HAVE DOUBLED OUR NUMBER OF ON-CAMPUS, TRADITIONAL, DEGREESEEKING STUDENTS PURSUING MINISTRY.”

their ministry in the context of the local church, to their place in the fulfillment of the Great Commission, and to their role in transforming culture through the gospel of the kingdom, to “extending the influence of Christ in society, constantly praying and toiling that the kingdom of God may come, and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” as our church covenant says.

CONCLUSION

The ministry of Welch College is vitally needed. If secularism continues to gain a foothold in the United States, Welch’s mission will grow in importance. And as secularism infringes on the First Amendment protection for freedom of conscience and religion, seeking to remove funding, tax exemption, and public recognition of traditional religious colleges, schools, and social service organizations, the need for support of Christian higher education will become crucial.

God is raising up numerous new financial supporters for Welch. They believe in our mission, and, following recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic, they want to

help Welch move forward strategically in fulfilling its distinctive mission. I see a new wave of support that will transform our college to move it into the greatest era of growth and mission fulfillment in its history. I encourage you to be part of that wave.

I pray that you will be a part of that group of supporters. I ask that you pray for Welch, support it financially, and recommend students to come and become a part of this Christian community of faith and learning. Thank you for all you do to enable Welch to fulfill the mission it has had since 1942, to educate leaders to serve Christ, His church, and His world through biblical thought and life.

Sincerely,
