más universal, la que florece cada primavera en los naranjos de la calle Alemanes o de la Plaza Nueva, del Barrio de Santa Cruz o de Triana. Ese verdor recobrado en calles y plazuelas, de fragancias frutales, que viene acompañado de las fiestas más renombradas y seguidas: la Semana Santa y la Feria de Abril, santo y seña de las tradiciones hispalenses. Por más que se nos presenten veranos de largas veladas, cálidos otoños culturales y suaves y soleados inviernos, y que nos prestemos a disfrutar de todas estas épocas, la primavera en Sevilla siempre será la primavera. Por ese color especial que tanto le han cantado, por la devoción y el bullicio de sus gentes, por tantas razones que le animamos a descubrir. En una primavera como la que se nos viene encima a finales de marzo, pero de 1996, Welcome&olé! comenzó a desentrañar para los visitantes de Sevilla todas estas maravillas que nos siguen fascinando. En efecto, más de tres lustros después, sigue siendo para nosotros igual de emocionante informar y recomendar las visitas, la gastronomía, las compras y, en definitiva, la oferta de ocio más interesante para el viajero. Tenemos el privilegio de no cumplir años, sino primaveras. Le invito, amigo lector, a compartir con nosotros esta fascinación por un destino como Sevilla, que se muestra estos días con más luz, más color, más calor y más entusiasmo a quienes se acercan a conocerlo.

a Catedral, el Real Alcázar y el Archivo de Indias forman un conjunto monumental admirable en el corazón de Sevilla. La Catedral y el Alcázar son dos testimonios excepcionales de la civilización almohade y de la Sevilla cristiana, cuyo arte estuvo muy impregnado de la influencia mora desde la reconquista de la ciudad (1248) hasta el siglo XVI. El antiguo minarete de la Giralda, que influyó en la construcción de numerosas torres en España, y, después de la conquista, en las Américas, es una obra maestra de la arquitectura almohade y se yergue al costado de la catedral. Esta iglesia de cinco naves es el edificio gótico más grande de Europa y alberga la colosal sepultura de Cristóbal Colón. En la antigua lonja, convertida en Archivo de Indias, se conservan fondos documentales inestimables de las colonias españolas en América. Además, el espacio elíptico del Cabildo, creado por Hernán Ruiz, es una de las obras arquitectónicas más bellas del Renacimiento. Los tres edificios personifican perfectamente el español “Edad de Oro”, la incorporación de los vestigios de la cultura islámica, siglos de poder eclesiástico, la soberanía real y el poder de negociación que España adquirió a través de sus colonias en el Nuevo Mundo. Por la integridad y autenticidad que encierra el Complejo Monumental, fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1987.

ogether the Cathedral, Alcázar and Archivo de Indias as a series, form a remarkable monumental complex in the heart of Seville. The cathedral and the Alcázar – dating from the Reconquest of 1248 to the 16th century and imbued with Moorish influences – are an exceptional testimony to the civilization of the Almohads as well as that of Christian Andalusia. The Giralda minaret is the masterpiece of Almohad architecture and influenced the construction of numerous towers in Spain, and, after the conquest, in the Americas. It stands next to the cathedral with its five naves; the largest Gothic building in Europe, it houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. The ancient Lonja, which became the Archivo de Indias, contains valuable documents from the archives of the colonies in the Americas. Besides, the elliptical space of the Cabildo, created by Hernán Ruiz, is one of the most beautiful architectural works of the Renaissance. These buildings perfectly epitomize the Spanish “Golden Age”, incorporating vestiges of Islamic culture, centuries of ecclesiastical power, royal sovereignty and the trading power that Spain acquired through its colonies in the New World. For its integrity and authenticity, the Complejo Monumental was declared World Heritage in 1987.

En lo alto de la torre se alza una gigantesca estatua de la Fe, en forma de mujer con vestidura clásica romana, que lleva en una mano un escudo y en la otra, una palma. Al ser una veleta giratoria se denominó giralda tanto a la torre como a la estatua. Actualmente se conoce como Giralda a la torre y Giraldillo a la veleta. El Giraldillo. On top of the bell tower of the Giralda there is a statue portraying Faith in the form of a woman dressed in traditional Roman clothes. She is carrying a shield in one hand and a palm leaf in the other. As this statue is a rotating weather vane both the tower and the statue were named ‘Giralda’ , derived from the Spanish word ‘girar’ meaning ‘turn’. Nowadays, the bell tower is referred to as the Giralda and the wind vane as the Giraldillo.

Una de las últimas aportaciones del arte almohade en Sevilla, la Torre del Oro, constituía el último baluarte del lienzo de muralla que arrancaba desde el Alcázar. Muchas leyendas intentan explicar el nombre de la torre, como la de los reflejos del sol en los azulejos que presuntamente la recubrían o la que alude a los cabellos de una dama que el rey don Pedro hubiera encerrado en el edificio. Sin embargo, se la llamaba del Oro por su importancia, igual que existía otra de la Plata. Construida en el primer tercio del siglo XIII, tiene una docena de lados y está rematada por un último cuerpo circular que fue añadido por Sebastián Vander Borcht en 1760. En la actualidad se encuentra en su interior un museo naval con grabados, cartas marinas, maquetas, instrumentos antiguos de marear y documentos históricos. En la torre se traza una imagen de la historia naval de Sevilla, de la importancia del río Guadalquivir y de la huella de numerosos marines ilustres.

One of the later examples of Almohad art in Seville, the Golden Tower is the last bastion of the fortified wall which began at the Alcazar. There are many legends as to the origin of the tower’s name. Some say it refers to the reflections of the sun on the tiles which supposedly covered it, while others claim it was the golden hair of a damsel which King Pedro locked up in the building. The fact is that it was called the Golden Tower because of its importance in comparison to the nearby Silver Tower. Built at the beginning of the 13th Century, the tower has twelve sides. The highest part of the tower was added by Sebastian Vander Borcht in 1760. Today it is a naval museum with engravings, letters, models, antique navigational instruments and historical documents. The museum also has information regarding Seville’s prestigious naval history, the importance of the Guadalquivir River and the routes of various famous navigators.

A obra maestra de Aníbal González, también en el Parque de María Luisa y con motivo de la Exposición de 1929, es un semicírculo de 200 metros de diámetro realizada en ladrillo y cerámica, materiales predilectos de la arquitectura regionalista, que no sólo se consagró a los estilos mudéjar, gótico y renacentista propios de la ciudad sino también a su industria. Alrededor de la plaza hay 48 bancos dedicados a las provincias españolas y, salvando un pequeño arroyo, cuatro puentes que representan los cuatro reinos que formaban la corona española: Castilla, León, Navarra y Aragón. The masterpiece of Aníbal González, also in the Parque de María Luisa and built for the occasion of the 1929 Exhibition, is a semicircle 200 metres in diameter of brick and ceramics, favourite materials of regionalist architecture, which honours not only the Mudejar, Gothic, and Renaissance styles of the city but also its industry. Around the plaza there are 48 benches dedicated to the Spanish provinces, and four bridges over a small stream to represent the four kingdoms of the Spanish crown: Castile, León, Navarre, and Aragón.

S
eville’s Baratillo Bullring started to be constructed in 1761 according to the project by Francisco Sánchez de Aragón and was finished in 1881 by the architect Juan Talavera y de la Vega. Its exterior shows the style of the Late Baroque and early Classicist period. Inside its Museum there are exhibits related to the history of the Noble Order which is the owner of the Bullring: ‘La Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla’, as well as numerous objects associated with the art of bullfighting. The bullfighting season begins on Easter Sunday, continuing with bullfights through the April Fair and Corpus Christi, and concludes following the Fair of San Miguel with the traditional bullfight on 12 October.

os jardines cedidos en 1893 por la Infanta María Luisa, Duquesa de Montpensier, y acondicionados por el ingeniero francés Nicolás Forestier para la Exposición Iberoamericana de 1929, dieron como resultado uno de los parques más hermosos de España, con más de 400.000 metros cuadrados de arboleda, avenidas y glorietas donde se combinan los diseños europeos de la época con la tradición islámica. En el interior del parque, la Plaza de América sintetiza las corrientes de la arquitectura regionalista: neomudéjar, neogótico, neobarroco, a través de tres pabellones diseñados por el arquitecto Aníbal González: Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares, el Museo Arqueológico y el Pabellón Real.

he gardens donated by the Infanta María Luisa – Duchess of Montpensier in 1893 and designed by the French engineer Nicolas Forestier for the 1929 Latin American Exhibition turned out to be one of the most beautiful parks in Spain, with over 400,000 square metres of groves, avenues, and arbours. In the interior of the park Plaza de America synthesises the currents adopted by Seville regionalist architecture: neo-Mudejar, neo-Gothic, and neoBaroque, through three pavilions designed by the archictect Anibal Gonzalez: the Arts and Popular Customs, the Archaeological Museum and the Royal Pavilion.

de la caridad DON MIGUEL MAÑARA. El Venerable siervo de Dios Miguel Mañara nació en Sevilla en 1627. Tras la muerte de su esposa entra en una profunda crisis moral y dedica su vida a los pobres, para los que construye el Hospital, que funciona desde 1672 hasta el día de hoy, siendo actualmente una casa de acogida de ancianos sin recursos. DON MIGUEL MAÑARA. The Venerable Servant of God, Miguel Mañara, was born in Seville in 1627. Following the death of his wife he suffered a profound moral crisis and decided to dedicate his life to the poor, building the Hospital which has carried out its functions ever since 1627 and which is currently a shelter for the elderly in need of aid.

l recorrido turístico comienza ya en
la propia fachada, de gran elegancia y belleza decorativa. En su interior la visita nos guía hacia una ruptura con el presente que comienza en el doble patio, de gran belleza y diáfana luminosidad. En él se sitúan dos fuentes en las que se disponen esculturas de la Misericordia y la Caridad, obras del siglo XVII. En los muros del patio se encuentra un conjunto de paneles de azulejos holandeses, que muestran pasajes de la Biblia. Pero el gran valor artístico se encuentra en el interior de la iglesia. Algunas de las obras de arte que destacan de su interior son las Postrimerías o Jeroglíficos de la Muerte, dramáticas y terribles representaciones de la muerte realizadas por Valdés Leal y el conjunto completo de pinturas de Murillo, representando Obras de Misericordia, seis en total. En el Presbiterio se sitúa el impresionante Retablo Mayor, de intenso barroquismo, realizado por Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal, que plasma la séptima obra de Misericordia: enterrar a los muertos. La visita al monumento sigue con la Sala de Cabildos, estancia del s. XVII donde todavía hoy se reúne la Hermandad, con obras de Zurbarán, Pedro de Camprobín, Valdés Leal, y donde se unen la arquitectura gótica de las Atarazanas con el esplendor del barroco clásico sevillano. Al final, se puede descansar en el bello Patio de los Rosales, jardín enmarcado entre arcos de las Atarazanas, donde están conservadas las rosas que plantó en vida Miguel Mañara. El recorrido puede completarse con la Visita de la Galería Alta (previa cita), donde se encuentra una parte importante de la colección pictórica de la Hermandad, así como estancias privadas como la Biblioteca, Sala Alta de Cabildo o Coro, desde donde se disfruta de una visión única de la Iglesia.

he façade itself is noteworthy, with its elegant lines and outstanding decorative beauty. The interior takes us on a journey into the past, starting with the striking and luminous double courtyard. Here you will find two fountains with sculptures of Mercy and Charity which date from the 17th century. The walls of the courtyard are decorated with a series of Dutch ceramic panels depicting scenes from the Bible. However its greatest artistic wealth is to be found in the interior of the church. Art works which stand out in its interior include the Hieroglyphs of Death, dramatic and terrifying representations of Death painted by Valdés Leal, and a complete a series of six paintings by Murillo which represent the Acts of Mercy. The Presbytery houses the impressive Main Altarpiece. This intensely Baroque work by Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal represents the Seventh Act of Mercy, burial of the dead. The visit continues with the Chapter Hall, which dates from the 17th century and is still used for meetings of the Brotherhood. En 1911 quedan constituidos con el nombre de jardines del Retiro al cerrarse los jardines del Alcázar en los límites que poseen hoy día, en 1915 fueron diseñados por Juan Talavera y en 1918 se les da el nombre de Jardines de Murillo, en honor al pintor sevillano que fue enterrado en la iglesia que estuvo en la cercana plaza de Santa Cruz. Prado de San Sebastián (C-6). Antiguo establecimiento de la Feria de Ganado (1846) que daría origen a la Feria de Abril, se inaugura con sus actuales jardines en 1997. Se levantan sobre los restos de los jardines y palacios del monarca almohade Abu Yaqub Yusuf en el siglo XIII y que pasaron a denominarse la Huerta del Rey. Para abastecer su alberca, los musulmanes reconstruyeron el acueducto romano de la calle Luis Montoto. Jardines del Valle (B-4). Se corresponden con los jardines del Colegio de Religiosas del Sagrado Corazón fundado en 1866 donde estaba el Convento del Valle desde principios del siglo XV. Otros espacios naturales: el Parque del Alamillo, el Parque de los Príncipes (F-7), pero también grandes plazas arboladas del centro como la Alameda de Hércules (D-3), la Plaza Nueva o la de la Encarnación (D-4).

s well as the the garden of cristina and the famous María Luisa Park (see page 8), Seville has other important green areas which add to its wealth of heritage, providing a breath of fresh air for its streets and taking the edge off the summer temperatures. The last to join in this process is the American Garden (E2) at Isla de la Cartuja, which has been restored for the public after being closed for 18 years. Built as part of the Universal Expo of 1992, this 3-hectare area on the banks of the Guadalquivir River includes 400 American plant species, a floating walkway with a length of 400 metres and a Nature Pavilion (with a meeting room for 160 persons), among other attractions. Jardines de Murillo (C-5). These gardens once belonged to the Alcázar as part of the Huerta del Retiro,which in 1862 was destined to the expansion of the Fair which previously took place in the Prado de San Sebastián (C-6). In 1911 they were named Jardines del Retiro following the enclosure of the grounds of the Alcázar which resulted in their current distribution. Shortly after in 1915 they were designed by Juan Talavera and in 1918 they were renamed Jardines de Murillo, in honour of the Seville-born painter who was buried in the church which previously existed in Plaza de Santa Cruz. Prado de San Sebastián (C-6). The former site of the Cattle Fair (1846) which later gave rise to the April Fair, it was inaugurated in its current form in 1997. Located near the statue of El Cid. La Buhaira (B-5). Its Park was raised on the site of the gardens and palaces constructed by the Almohad Monarch Abu Yaqub Yusuf in the 13th century, later known as the King’s Garden. Its reservoir was fed by an aqueduct built by the Muslims from the remains of a Roman aqueduct, of which sections remain in Luis Montoto St. Jardines del Valle (B-4). These correspond with the gardens of the Sacred Heart Religious School founded in 1866 on the site of el Convento del Valle, a convent dating from the beginning of the 15th century. Other natural spaces: Parque del Alamillo, Parque de los Príncipes (F-7), and many large tree-lined squares in the centre such as Alameda de Hércules (D-3), Plaza Nueva and Plaza de la Encarnación (D-4).

l 25 de febrero se inauguró oficialmente el Muelle de Nueva York, la zona ribereña del Guadalquivir que mejor escenifica el propósito de recuperación del río para el turismo y la vida de Sevilla. Por ser centro receptor de los cruceros de mayor calado tras la apertura de la nueva esclusa en 2009, por la oferta de restauración que allí se concentra —con Puerto Delicia y Nantara Puerto— y, en su aspecto más visible, por la reintegración paisajística, la ordenación urbana y arquitectónica del espacio como parque urbano. Una orilla que acompaña el curso del paseo fluvial sin interrupción para el ciudadano y el visitante. En efecto, río y orilla son uno en tanto que se atraviesa Sevilla, desde el Alamillo hasta el Muelle de las Delicias. Y es así tanto por la margen como sobre el espinazo del Guadalquivir, es decir, a flote. Para ello se ha habilitado una serie de pantalanes de uso gratuito en ambas orillas: calle Betis, Paseo de la O, Muelle de las Delicias, Costurero de la Reina y Torre del Oro. Con estos accesos, el río se integra como una avenida más de Sevilla. Aquel viejo sueño. A esta novedad se le añaden otros hitos que avanzan a ritmo dispar: el Centro de Artesanía Triana (para la interpretación histórica de la cerámica en la fábrica de Santa Ana, previsto para otoño de 2012) y el Centro de Atención Integral al Visitante en el muelle de Marqués de Contadero. Ya están en marcha, el Costurero de la Reina, el Castillo de San Jorge o el Pabellón de la Navegación.

following the opening of the new lock in 2009, the range of restaurants to be found – including Puerto Delicia and Nantara Puerto- and the visual transformation of the landscape to convert it into an urban park. This zone for both locals and visitors to Seville follows the whole length of the river as it passes through the city, with the river and its banks melding from the Alamillo Bridge to the Las Delicias Quay. There is also a steady flow of fluvial traffic on the river itself and a series of free jetties have been installed on both banks of the river at calle Betis, Paseo de la O, Las Delicias Quay, Costurero de la Reina and the Gold Tower. These provide further access to enhance the river’s integration as yet another avenue of the city, a long-held dream which is now becoming a reality. Other milestones are also progressing quickly, such as the Triana Craft Centre which explains the history of ceramics in the Santa Ana factory (scheduled to open in 2012) and the Tourism Office at the Marqués de Contadero Quay. The other Tourism Offices at Costurero de la Reina, the Castle of San Jorge and the Navigation Pavilion are already functioning.

These buildings occupied by some of the more longstanding businesses combine artistic ceramic and brickwork, carvings, balustrades, iron balconies and delicate decorative work by famous painters, sculptors and ceramic workers of Seville, along with designs by the leading architects of the early 20th century: Aníbal González, Juan Talavera and José Espiau, to name a few.
LA ADRIÁTICA José Espiau, 1914-1922. Construido a propósito del ensanche de la Avenida de la Constitución y a modo de remate de tan emblemática vía, muestra en su exterior las formas, colores y motivos con que se engalanan los interiores de las casas-palacio hispalenses del siglo XVI, de inspiración mudéjar. Llama la atención la fastuosa cúpula con que se remata la esquina entre el final de la avenida de la Constitución y la calle Fernández y González. A pie de calle, una confitería y souvenirs reciben al visitante. José Espiau, 1914-1922. Built on the occasion of the widening of Avenida de la Constitución to cap off this emblematic thoroughfare, its façade is decorated with shapes, colours and motifs in the Mudejar style that were used to decorate the interior of Seville’s palatial mansions in the 16th century. The most striking feature is the spectacular dome which crowns this corner at the end of Avenida de la Constitución and the start of calle Fernández y González. The ground level is occupied by a bakery and souvenir shop.

Una propuesta íntimamente ceñida al neomudéjar, como se extrae de los colores, las formas y motivos de evocación árabe, así como los materiales. En la línea compartida por otros arquitectos regionalistas, sigue una línea preciosista muy característica del Primer Regionalismo. Durante 50 años estuvo vinculada al comercio textil, del que tomó su nombre, y en la actualidad alberga las colecciones de una conocida firma internacional. Calle Cuna, 30 esquina con Cerrajería
CENTRAL DE LA COMPAÑÍA TELEFÓNICA Juan Talavera y Heredia. 19261928. Es una obra clave en la evolución estética de Juan Talavera en la medida en que alcanza el cenit en la ornamentación de fachadas, como queda de manifiesto en sus cuatro plantas además de en el torreón. Concretamente, la decoración toma los modelos barrocos de la Iglesia de San Luis o el Palacio de San Telmo (motivos sevillanos e historicistas, por tanto). Juan Talavera y Heredia. 1922. He aquí uno de los más valiosos ejemplos de la arquitectura regionalista sevillana. Lo que más llama la atención en este edificio de 1922, con fachada de esquina a esquina entre las calles paralelas Álvarez Quintero y Francos, es la colorista ornamentación obra del gran pintor decorador Manuel de la Cuesta y Ramos. Las tonalidades sugieren cercanía con el modernismo, pero los motivos son decididamente regionalistas. En tan insigne espacio se ubica una boutique de esas que atesoran como pocas la elegancia sevillana, Fabiola. Calle Chapineros, 1

Pertenece al periodo más barroco del arquitecto Juan Talavera, con la característica distribución de ventanales rectangulares en fachada, aunque lo más destacado es el gran chaflán neobarroco, finalizado en una última planta a modo de mirador para aportar un hito singular al cruce entre Tetuán y Rioja. El chaflán aparece rematado por una cúpula de azulejos blancos y azules entre los que se insertan tabiques que albergan remates cerámicos. Desde 2002 es sede de una joyería. Juan Talavera y Heredia. 19261928. This four-storey building capped off with a tower is a key work in the evolution of Juan Talavera’s style, representing the peak in terms of ornamentation of the façade. The decorative style draws on local and historicist Baroque influences from the Church of San Luis and the Palace of San Telmo. Built at the height of the Regionalist movement, it comprises a sophisticated variant of the Neo-Baroque style. The company Telefonica currently has its offices on the lower floor. Plaza Nueva
This building constitutes one of the most valuable examples of Seville’s Regionalist architectural style. Its most striking feature is the colourful decoration by the great painter and decorator Manuel de la Cuesta y Ramos. The tones resemble the Modernist style although the motifs are clearly Regionalist, such as the tower with the hipped tiled roof and brick proscenium arches, and of course the well-known readoption of grilles on the windows and balconies. This building is from the most Baroque period of the architect Juan Talavera, with the characteristic distribution of rectangular windows in the façade, although the most outstanding feature is the NeoBaroque chamfered corner capped off by a panoramic tower which adds a singular touch to this intersection between Tetuán and Rioja. The dome at the top is covered with white and blue ceramic tiles and brickwork topped off with ceramic decorations. It has been the site of a jewellery store since 2002. a Cuaresma representa, en algunas iglesias cristianas, el tiempo litúrgico de preparación de la Pascua de Resurrección, que transcurre entre el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Jueves Santo, y que se caracteriza por ser un periodo de penitencia. De vigilia y abstinencia, de ayuno y recogimiento, de reflexión y 57reconocimiento de los cuarenta días que Jesús de Nazaret ayunó en el desierto. Son, en definitiva, unas fechas que trascienden de lo religioso o lo histórico para condicionar lo sociológico, lo gastronómico y, en consecuencia, lo turístico. El visitante encontrará en los restaurantes sevillanos una carta adaptada a estos días en que los sevillanos, ya sea por tradición o por creencia, evitan comer carne en viernes. En su ausencia ganan protagonismo los pescados y verduras que, en algunos casos, verdaderamente han creado escuela en esta ciudad. Son principalmente dos: el bacalao y las espinacas. Las distintas especies de bacalao que se sirven en Sevilla provienen principalmente de Islandia, Groenlandia, de estas aguas del Norte. Tradicionalmente se ponía en salazón para favorecer su conservación y, en nuestros días, aunque ha dejado de ser necesario, sigue recibiendo el mismo tratamiento para luego ser desalado y añadirlo a distintas recetas. En Taberna Berrocal lo encontrará con pimiento rojo, revuelto con tomate y papas (como se hacía antiguamente en las casas de pueblo), y en temporada de Cuaresma también con tomate o con espinacas. Las espinacas constituyen otro plato tradicional de la Sevilla cuaresmal. Mayoritariamente con garbanzos siguiendo la receta típica de la ciudad. Son de las verduras más nutritivas que existen y llegaron a España en el siglo XI de la mano de 69 los musulmanes. Curiosamente, hoy representan una de las alternativas cristianas para guardar abstinencia. Y claro, están los postres. Ahí entran las torrijas, tan sencillas como exquisitas, tradicionales y apreciadas. Las encontrará con leche y miel, con leche y azúcar o, en Taberna Berrocal, con vino y miel. Un exquisito bocado que hace olvidar las privaciones de una época de contención.

This period also transcends its religious and historic meaning to pervade social customs, gastronomy and consequently tourism as well. Visitors to Seville’s restaurants will find menus adapted to this period in which, whether due to tradition or devotion, the locals avoid eating meat on Fridays. In its absence, there is a major presence of fish and vegetables which in some cases has led to the establishment of unique cooking styles in Seville. Two star ingredients in this sense are cod and spinach. The different varieties of cod served in Seville come mainly from the northern waters of Iceland and Greenland. These fish were traditionally salted to preserve them and although it is no longer necessary this practice is still prevalent, the cod subsequently being desalted and
added to different recipes. Taberna Berrocal serves up cod with red peppers or sautéed with egg, tomato and potato (a favourite dish in small towns), while in the Lent period it is also served with tomato or spinach. Spinach is another traditional dish during Lent in Seville, mainly served with chickpeas according to a typical local recipe. One of the most nutritional vegetables of all, spinach was originally brought to Spain in the 11th century AD by the Muslims. Curiously, nowadays it is one of the main alternatives for Christians during this period of abstinence. And of course, there are the desserts. The torrijas (Spanish bread pudding) are a very popular traditional dish which is as simple as it is delicious. You can find them with milk and honey, milk and sugar and in Taberna Berrocal with wine and honey; a delicious treat to help you forget the privations of the Lent period!

A partir de este propósito de ofrecerse al turismo chino ha comenzado una ronda informativa con las empresas locales para establecer clubes de producto y, a mediados de febrero, tuvo lugar el primer encuentro en Sevilla. En concreto, casi un centenar de estudiantes de origen chino participaron en el primer taller intercultural de la marca, celebrado en el Museo del Baile Flamenco.

At the last edition of Fitur, Seville was presented as the first Chinese Friendly City in Europe. Based on this project to attract Chinese tourism, a series of informative meetings has been organised with local companies to establish product clubs. The first meeting was held in Seville in mid February, during which nearly 100 Chinese students participated in the first intercultural workshop held in the Museum of Flamenco Dance.
Hotel Alfonso XIII reopens its doors on 13 March after a year of alterations and improvements to its facilities. Between March and May it will celebrate its return with open days involving guided tours and different events. The opening day will coincide with the 84th anniversary of the hotel’s establishment. Apart from the improvements and refurbishment of the infrastructure, facilities and furniture, the hotel will also regain a restaurant located in the pool gardens which has been granted a Moorish air to offer Mediterranean cuisine.

Pérez Villalta was awarded the National Plastic Arts Award in 1985 and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2006.

eclosión cultural y de ocio.what´s on. the first beats of 2012 SeVilla reCibe la primavera acompañada de sus habituales festivales y ciclos de estas fechas. Todo comienza con el Festival de Música Antigua de Sevilla, en marzo, y tras él se suceden las grandes citas escénicas y musicales hasta el aclamado Festival Territorios, en mayo. El florecer primaveral tiene su correlato en las artes y continuidad durante el resto del año. Pues el verano es también época festivalera y en otoño asoma la Bienal de Flamenco. Entre tanto, hay que dejarse llevar por la programación estable de los principales espacios escénicos y expositivos de la ciudad, apenas interrumpida por las Fiestas de la Primavera, este año concentradas en abril. SeVille WelCOMeS SPriNG with the typical festivals and concerts of this time of the year. It all begins with Seville’s Medieval Music Festival in March, followed by major musical and stage events which continue until the time of the acclaimed Territorios Festival in May. Accordingly, springtime brings a bloom in the local arts scene which is kept up throughout the year, for summer is also a time of festivals and celebrations while autumn brings us the Biennial Flamenco Festival. In between, take advantage of the standard programme of events in the city’s main venues and exhibition spaces, which are largely unaffected by the Spring Festivals mainly taking place in April this year.
