Your Garden Resource By MIRANDA BAINES WELCOME TO TARBORO

“Our role is education for the community, while doing our best to provide confident, reliable, and credible information.”

Kim Page President of the Master Gardeners

T

he Master Gardener volunteer program is one of the newest programs offering resources for those in Edgecombe County with a green thumb. Established in 2010, the program is “a professional association whose membership comes from the volunteer staff of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.” “Our role is education for the community, while doing our best to provide confident, reliable, and credible information,” said Kim Page, president of the Master Gardeners. “We try to help residents make an informed decision regarding their yards and gardens.” The Master Gardeners is comprised of 43 volunteers, 10 of whom are interns. Becoming a Master Gardener certified volunteer requires 40 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of internship, to be completed within one year. The Master Gardeners are educated at different cooperative extension offices across the state and take field trips to sites such as Greenleaf Nursery and the arboretum at NC State University to receive hands-on gardening experience. The group additionally views plants, pest and disease webinars. Offering informed advice to county residents about gardening-related matters is a primary role of the Master Gardener volunteers. “If you have a problem with your yard, call 6417815, leave your name and number and we’ll research The Master Gardener volunteer program offers assistance with the garden at the Blount-Bridgers House and “boos and bluegrass” at the house PHOTO/MIRANDA BAINES it and get back with you,” said Page. “It’s a good service that’s free.” The volunteers also provide soil sample assistance. “We provide the boxes and sample is sent to Raleigh for testing. You will then get a copy of the results with suggestions for amendments if needed,” said Page. The Master Gardener volunteers’ objective is to educate the whole community about gardening, including children. Currently, the group is working on a project with two pre-kindergarten classes at Stocks and is on the verge of planting a butterfly/ pollinator garden at Coker-Wimberly Elementary School. The garden will include flowers and herbs designed to attract a variety of butterflies and beneficial insects. “Working with the schools, that’s just very rewarding,” said Page. “We’re hoping in the fall to kick off something else with a school.” An upcoming educational event in which the Master Gardener volunteers plan to participate is “art in the garden,” The volunteers will be outside of the Imperial Center in downtown Rocky Mount from 2 until 5 p.m. April 27 doing demonstrations of hypertufa planters and self-watering containers. The Master Gardener volunteer program helps to maintain the herb garden on the Town Common The group also will sell plants and have an exhibit near the cotton gin. PHOTO/MIRANDA BAINES at Tarboro’s upcoming Happening on the Common in May. The volunteers’ most recent project is “yard of the month,” a recognition open to all Edgecombe County residents. Tarboro focuses on Tarboro FOR WELCOME TO TARBORO

Blount-Bridgers House gardens PHOTOS MIRANDA BAINES

Tarboro is definitely in bloom. And a group of local volunteers wants to make it official, nationally, competing for designation as an America In Bloom (AIB) community. The competition is designed to help communities identify their assets and develop projects to enhance them. It includes development of a community profile and a scheduled visit by AIB judge/consultants who typically have backgrounds in urban planning, historic preservation and landscaping. “America In Bloom provides a format for communities to focus on themselves, identifying the things that make them special, and then develop programs and projects to maintain and enhance them,” explained 2012 committee co-chair Shari Redhage. Community involvement is one of the criteria groups rated by the judges. Other criteria include environmental efforts, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas and floral displays. In 2012 the link between economic development and community appearance was also strongly emphasized by the AIB representative who made the initial presentation to the committee. “It’s just good common sense that attractive communities are more likely to attract new businesses than unattractive communities,” said 2012 committee member Richard Andrews.

In this competition, Tarboro will be judged among towns of similar size on criteria opening up the entire community — good and bad — for the judges to find a sense of the level of community pride in the town’s appearance. “So many of our assets are easily recognized,” said Redhage, “and sometimes, we take our town’s beauty for granted, forgetting the real value of a visitor’s first impression. There are neighborhoods that we hope will spring to this challenge to show the judges that we are not just the historic district with its beautiful Town Common and early 19th century colonial structures. We have many lovely small clusters of lovely streets all across town.” Redhage emphasized the importance for all citizens to take ownership in working toward the AIB distinction. She feels this is the season for residents to spring into action, following through with what’s already in place, such as the potential of riverfront park, the trees and planters in the downtown, the courthouse square, sports complexes and the many other public spaces that are so beautifully cared for by the Town of Tarboro grounds maintenance staff. “It’s not just about flowers,” emphasized Redhage. “This is allinclusive; it’s about everything we do and can do to spruce up the community for the visitor’s eye.” 13

AIB Community Profile The AIB Community Profile is a description of Tarboro and its achievements, especially during the last 12 months. It focuses on the six criteria that the judges will consider as they visit Tarboro on June 17 – 18: Floral Displays, Landscaped Areas, Urban Forestry, Environmental Effort, Heritage Preservation and Overall Impression. The following summary highlights some of the new topics in the profile this year. Floral Displays: -The benches in the Blount-Bridgers Garden have been restored by the Preservation Trades School at Edgecombe Community College. -A new addition to the Blount-Bridgers Garden is an arbor constructed of hand-crafted iron. It will be planted with roses and pears, providing an welcoming canopy for visitors entering the garden. -The planters on Main Street are being outfitted with a self-watering system, installed by volunteers. This will reduce the frequency of watering by downtown merchants and Garden Club members. Landscaped Areas: -The major project for 2012 was landscaping the traffic circle and was conducted by the Edgecombe County Master Gardeners in cooperation with the Town of Tarboro. To complement the traffic circle, improvements are planned for the area behind Thorne Realty for 2013. A screen will be built to camouflage the trash receptacles and plants will be added by Master Gardeners and local youth. The chain link fence by the edge of the Tar River will be planted with a vine to make the fence more aesthetically pleasing. -A primary focus for this year is to update the Courthouse Square landscape. The Edgecombe County Master Gardeners agreed to accept the challenge of working on this area with assistance from the Town of Tarboro. This is a big project and will take more than one year to implement. -The Community Herb Garden near the McBryde Trail is being updated by the Master Gardeners and the Edgecombe Garden Club. It will contain culinary herbs, medicinal herbs and flowers. -Indian Lake recently benefitted from new signage and will also have new plants installed in the area by Boy Scouts. Environmental Effort: -Keep America Beautiful is partnering with Edgecombe County and AIB to sponsor a community paper shredding, E-waste and fluorescent lighting recycling event on Saturday. Accepted electronic equipment includes televisions, computers and monitors, printers and scanners, VCRs and DVD players, rechargeable batteries, cell phones and more. Unbroken fluorescent tubes and bulbs can be recycled. -The Town of Tarboro mobile recycling unit can be displayed at public events, promoting Tarboro’s recycling efforts and educating citizens about the benefits of recycling. -A rain barrel education program will be presented in May at Ace Hardware by an Extension Master Gardener. The program will encourage homeowners to collect and store rain water for garden irrigation and other household uses in order to reduce water usage. -The Wetlands Trail at Edgecombe Community College is also described in the AIB Community Profile. It is an educational and recreational site for area students and local residents. Heritage Preservation: -The Tourism Ambassador Program was offered by the Continuing Education Department of Edgecombe Community College. The participants learned about county history, historic properties, hospitality, event planning, genealogy and African-American history. The Am14

bassadors will assist with family reunion tours, Historic District and Downtown Walking Tours, Calvary Episcopal Tours and offer access to genealogy records at the local library. Overall Impression: -The Main Street Art Project is a partnership between the Edgecombe County Cultural Arts Council, the Town of Tarboro, local realtors, owners of a vacant retail store and students. Under the direction of artist Joyce Turner, students will design and create Matisse-inspired panels from recycled materials, which will be displayed in the windows of a vacant Main Street building.

Buddy Hooks and Connie Sherrill will co-chair Tarboro’s 2013 America in Bloom effort. The local steering committee meets from 12:30-1:30 p.m. each Tuesday at the Blount-Bridgers House. (Courtesy photo)

hen the plan to tear down the old Tar River Bridge and build a new one with a roundabout road that leads to and from Tarboro was introduced, many of the local residents weren’t sure what it was and how it would look. Three years later, three local organizations have partnered to make a pleasant appearance to one of the town’s newest attraction. The roundabout project was adopted by Edgecombe’s Extension Master Gardeners in partnership with the Town of Tarboro, N.C. Dept. of Transportation and Edgecombe County’s Cooperative Extension Service. The partners are responsible for planting flowers and trees to beautify the circle which is designed to look like a compass rose with eight points, eight wedges, and a center circle.

The Edgecombe Master Gardeners have taken on the design and maintenance of the project in cooperation with Ag Extension Office, the town and the state Department of Transportation. The centerpiece of the project is a more mature burgundy cotton crepe myrtle, which does not obstruct the vision of drivers. photo/John H. Walker

All the plants selected for the circle were the result of weeks of research and advice from botanists at the J.C. Raulston Arboritum adjacent to the campus of NC State University. The traffic circle offers a challenge for drought tolerance and long periods of sun exposure. The Edgecombe Master Gardener volunteers recently planted the points of the design of the traffic circle with a very hardy, slow-growing shrub called Serissa (Serissa foetida). There is a mix of variegated as well as the solid deep green leaf variety of this plant. Of the several choices, serissa was advised as the best choice for the high traffic, full sun exposure. The shrub will have tiny white blooms early spring and in the summer. The center circle of the roundabout has an eleven foot Chinese Fringe Tree (Chionanthus retusus), an evergreen that has a wispy white bloom in late spring and bears a small fruit in fall. Around the base of the tree are twelve spring-to-fall-blooming white Shrub Roses, ‘Rosa White Out’ variety, planted with twelve decorative Muhly Grasses (Muhlenbergia capillaris) that will take on a pinkish tint as the fall season approaches. The circumference of the traffic circle is outlined with a popular perennial called Dianthus, ‘Bath’s pink’ variety, a very drought tolerant perennial that thrives in full sun and will bring color to the roundabout next spring and summer. The bluegreen foliage will remain through the fall and winter. The eight wedge shapes between the points will remain mulched over and unplanted until spring annuals and perennials are installed for color. The old bridge was built in 1931. After several years on the list to be rebuilt, a new one was built in 2010. The traffic pattern for the old bridge included a straight road with a stop light entering the town. 18

T

he Blount-Bridgers House, built in 1808, is one of the historical landmarks of the Tarboro community. Adding to its charm are the gardens on its grounds. The “Weekly Weeders,” a local group of volunteers, tend to the gardens, while the Town of Tarboro maintains the lawn. The primary garden on the back lawn of the historic house is the perennial garden. Perennials are plants that come back each year; examples are ferns and peonies. “All the plants that are in that garden are dating back to the date of the house. We’re trying to keep it a historical garden,” said Jeni Filbrun, member of the “Weekly Weeders.” Another garden on the grounds of Blount-Bridgers is the kitchen garden, containing herbs and ornamental vegetables such as cauliflower. At one time, the kitchen garden would have supplied the vegetables for the main house on the grounds, said Filbrun. A third garden on the grounds of Blount-Bridgers is a small shade garden funded by the Garden Club. The “Weekly Weeders” meet every at 9 a.m. every Wednesday to do the work necessary to keep the gardens in pristine condition. An average of five to seven volunteers come to the working meeting every week. Filbrun said the group is in need of more volunteers as summer approaches and the workload increases. Volunteers do not need to be experts in gardening; inexperienced volunteers can work alongside more experienced gardeners in the group. “It’s just a good way to get to know your neighbors. It’s a really fun time,” said Filbrun. The “Weekly Weeders” recently built an arbor, located on the back right side of the Blount-Bridgers back lawn. “Eventually, it’s going to be a nice little reading place,” said Filbrun. She envisions roses accenting the arbor in the future. The Blount-Bridgers House is located at 130 Bridgers St. in Tarboro.

From Soggy to Sun Loving 1604 Canterbury Road in Tarboro

A garden will be selected for this distinction each month by Edgecombe’s Extension Master Gardeners. If you have a garden that you would like to nominate, call the extension office at 641-7815 or email your suggestion to askemgv@gmail. com

Nancy and Buddy Hooks have lived in their home on Canterbury Road for the past 14 years, but only began to redesign the back garden in the last four, so they insist the garden is “still developing.” Buddy, who retired in the fall of 2011, was among the graduates of the third Extension Master Gardener class last spring and has made good use of his new skills in his own backyard, which has been chosen as the Extension Master Gardener’s “Garden of the Month” for April. As Buddy explains it, he created the contour of his yard from an expanse of lawn that went from fence to fence. “There were no curves, no interesting beds, just one big shady yard with some mighty sicklooking centipede turf,” Hooks said. “The presence of clay in the under-soil is typical in this neighborhood so the yard was really soggy in places. It’s difficult to get centipede to grow well especially in the shade,” he added. After removing the volunteer oaks in the perimeter of the yard and limbing-up the maples, he had a sunnier area to work with. The next step was to ‘Roundup’ the entire yard and skim off the unwanted grass surface, leaving the outer edge to shape by drawing it out with a shovel. A natural area approximately 15 feet deep framed the new yard where more ornamentals were added. Fall is the best time to get a fescue lawn started and is also a good time to plant shrubs because the root systems have the entire winter season to get established and grow deep. In the natural areas, Buddy and Nancy installed a mix of white oakleaf hydrangeas, vibernum and azaleas, and added several pink and red azaleas for color. By spring, the fescue lawn was established, the beds were showing some color and needing perennials and annuals. At the base of the steps off their sundeck, they created an interesting stone path around a large circular shade garden at the base of a maple tree and one that leads to a gate at the north end in front of the driveway. The perennials include white and yellow lantana, coreopsis, blackeyed Susan, phlox, Shasta daisies, Indian blanket gaillardia, gaura (butterfly plant), blue and white false indigo (baptisia), salvia, lobelia and lavender. In the shady areas, they have three varieties of heuchera, pineapple sage, blue and scarlet cardinal flower, impatiens, spider lilies, ajuga groundcover and lots of ferns. Container gardens placed around the deck are planted with varieties of sun-loving petunias, nasturtiums, herbs and tomato cages. A new bed at the south end of the yard is under construction this spring that features a 4 ft.X 8 ft. raised vegetable garden and a curved stone path leading from the fence gate that will be planted with low-growing ground cover between the stones. Sun-loving perennials will do well in this full-sun area. Spirea, indian hawthorne and azaleas are planted in this bed and an old birdbath is planted with trailing vinca. 21
