Education and training for the workforce have always been the guiding mission of the college. In May 2013, Edgecombe received a national award for its efforts to prepare students to be successful in careers and the workplace. The college received the ACT Career Preparedness Award. Edgecombe was one of just four honorees that received national ACT awards, and the only institution in North Carolina to be recognized. ECC has developed a number of unique initiatives and programs in response to local needs, including: • Edgecombe is the first community college in the area to operate a mobile medical simulation lab, called the HealthCare Simulator. • Edgecombe is the only community college in the state that offers I-TRIZ, a problem-solving training program that complements and supports Lean Six Sigma, the gold standard for problem solving in business and industry. • Edgecombe is one of three community colleges in the state that offers barbering. Business and industry services and workforce development programs in the Division of Continuing Education develop, support, and serve the college’s local business partners with customized education and training that help their start-ups and continued business success. The division is a leader in utilizing the WorkKeys® system for profiling, assessing, and training basic workplace skills required by industry. ECC has awarded Career Readiness Certificates to the equivalent of over 13% of the Edgecombe County workforce. In an effort to better prepare graduates to succeed in a global economy, the college is placing greater emphasis on global education. In 2007, Edgecombe established a partnership with Hyria Education in Hyvinkaa, Finland. Over the years, the institutions have exchanged faculty for short-term study visits and held virtual classroom discussions. In 2012, a second partnership was created between the college and educational institutions in China through the Global Classroom Alliance. About 35 middle and high school teachers and students from China visited the college in July through the Alliance. As a result, discussions have begun on developing a partnership in early childhood education. As Edgecombe moves forward, the college will continue to explore educational and training initiatives that will improve the quality of life for those in its service area, helping its citizens secure a quality education and gainful employment.

Forbes recently named Taylor Swift to its list of most influential celebrities, but just six years ago, Swift was booking small venues for concerts in places like Allentown, Pa., Bethel, N.Y., and Tarboro. By the time she performed at Edgecombe Community College in February 2008, Swift’s star ticket was punched. Just a few months earlier, she won the Country Music Association’s Horizon Award for Best New Artist. Swift is one of two performers who has played sold-out shows at the college’s Keihin Auditorium. The other was B.B. King in 2004. Edgecombe Community College is celebrating that distinction by raffling an assortment of Swift memorabilia, including a guitar signed by Swift when she was in Tarboro in 2008. The proceeds will go to the ECC Foundation to fund student scholarships. The raffle package includes: • Takamine 523SC acoustic guitar autographed by Swift • Deluxe hardshell case • Autographed “Taylor Swift” CD (2006) • Autographed photo of Swift • Photo of Swift autographing the guitar backstage at Keihin Auditorium • Photo of Swift posing with the guitar; and • Autographed Edgecombe Performance Series Showbill booklet from the concert The foundation is selling 200 tickets at $100 each. There is no time limit on sales, and after the last ticket is sold, the drawing will take place. To purchase raffle tickets, email andrusk@edgecombe.edu or call (252) 823-5166, ext. 212. Edgecombe County Public Schools Superintendent John Farrelly wants to bring the world to Edgecombe County students. “Why not? Why not bring the world to Tarboro?â€?
