n only its second year, the Bluegrass and Fall Festival, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21 at Indian Lake Park, will bring in some of the best bluegrass performers in the Southeast. The festival is jointly sponsored by the Edgecombe Cultural Arts Council, The Daily Southerner, The Town of Tarboro. Although just two weeks later than last year’s initial offering, Edgecombe Arts Director Joyce Turner said she hoped the later date would help ensure cooler weather than last year’s scorching heat and humidity. The show is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. with Rose Hill Blue Grass Band playing from about 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. as festival goers arrive and also during all sound checks and intermissions. While the ever-popular Tar River Boys will return, the four headline groups are sure to get the toes tapping and hands clapping. Kevin Richardson and Cuttin’ Edge (KRACE) hail from the Piedmont Triad, ranging from Winston-Salem on the north down thru Denton and Asheboro on the way to Seagrove. KRACE is Richardson on guitar and lead vocals, Scott Burgess on bass, Boyd Hulin on mandolin, Chris Ward on banjo, and Jason +LQVKDZ RQ Ă€GGOH 5HFHQWO\ WKH JURXS KDV EHHQ ZRUNLQJ RQ LWV Ă€UVW DOO JRVSHO &' and Richardson was nominated as Songwriter Of The Year for 2013 SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music Association awards. While Richardson lost out to Tom T. Hall, his talent is obvious It will be fan votes that get him the award, so you know what to do next. Over the past six month, the group has had two No. 1 songs on the Bluegrass Today charts — “He Better Runâ€? last December and “What Kind of Loveâ€? in March. Also on the card is the all-female group from Cary — Sweet Potato Pie. Sweet Potato Pie specializes in bluegrass, country and gospel music. T

ar River Players’ upcoming season will offer a variety of theatrical performances, from the Broadway musical “Godspell to the yuletide comedy “A Christmas Story.

“I think this season we have a very good mix of content,â€? said Roberta Cashwell, Tar River Players founder and director/ producer. “We are a community theatre and therefore our mission is to provide the best quality live theatre possible to citizens of Tarboro and Edgecombe County and surrounding counties.â€? 7KH Ă€UVW VKRZ RI WKH VHDVRQ LV ´$ &KULVWPDV 6WRU\ Âľ D KROLday show based on the stories of author Jean Shepherd. “We’ve tried to make our fall show a holiday show,â€? Cashwell said. For a long time, she said she has wanted to do “A Christmas Story,â€? which has become a “classic.â€? The family-oriented show has a large number of young actors. The story is about a 9-year-old boy named Ralphie who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. “It’s told from the standpoint of Ralphie looking back on his childhood in the post World War II/ 1950’s,â€? Cashwell said. “It’s all about the antics the family’s going through leading up to Christmas that year.â€? Next up on the play list is the Broadway musical “Godspell,â€? This year marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the musical. Set in New York City in the late 1960’s/ early ‘70’s, Stephen Scwartz’s “Godspellâ€? is a retelling of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, featuring Jesus Christ as a wandering minstrel dressed as a circus clown. “Day by Day,â€? “By My Sideâ€? and “Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord)â€? are well-known songs in the musical. “Godspellâ€? and the similarly themed show “Jesus Christ Superstarâ€? both opened in 1971 and instantly gained enormous popularity.

“They’ve become classics in their genre, which is musicals that modernize stories in the Bible,â€? Cashwell said. Dawn Whitehurst and Ann Davis will direct “Godspell,â€? while Pat Petruzziello will be the choreographer. The show will cast Jesus and Judas as the main characters and nine other ensemble members. “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Deanâ€? will be the Players’ spring show.
