One couple who took advantage of many of the tours offered this season, Chico and Jackie Garvis of Bentsen Grove Resort in Palmview, ventured to Corpus Christi, the King Ranch, the Alpaquita Ranch, and SpaceX. And Jackie plans to take part in a scheduled historic bus tour of Brownsville.
One of Jackie’s favorite tours of the season was to the Alpaquita Ranch near Raymondville, home to dozens of alpacas. She enjoyed the hands-on interaction with the animals and also appreciated learning about the wool, yarn, and dying processes, as well as the “wonderful soaps” available in the gift shop.
Chico and Jackie both rave about the trip to Corpus Christi, two days packed with attractions, private guides, and VIP experiences. “My favorite part was lunch on the fantail on the Lexington,” shares
Jackie. Chico chimes in, “The museum was just excellent!”
“I can’t say enough about how well it was run,” continues Chico. “Even just keeping a whole bunch of seniors together!”
“The excursions are immersive experiences with custom touches,” says Sarah Denzer, tour manager, touches like customized enamel lanyard pins for each tour--such as a giraffe for the Zoo tour, the U.S.S. Lexington representing Corpus Christi, and an alpaca for the Ranch.
The attractions and perks are complemented by the ease of travel. “All the buses have been very nice. Great buses; good drivers!” says Chico.
And don’t forget the meals. A restaurant stop was offered during the SpaceX and Alpaquita Ranch tours, a mouthwatering brisket BBQ lunch was served up at the King Ranch, and a meal was served in-

Tours by Welcome Home coordinated with restaurants in advance of the large groups. After the SpaceX tour, Chico and Jackie said they stopped at Black Bear Diner, a local Brownsville restaurant. “They had all of us at one long table,” says Chico, “and they did just an amazing job. And the food was excellent!”
What the Garvises appreciate most - aside from meeting new friendsis the worry-free enjoyment. Tours by Welcome Home tackles the details and they reap the fun.
The couple are already looking forward to next year’s adventures. Continuing north, Muskogee beckons to travelers with its spring blooms. All through April, the city’s Honor Heights Park holds its annual Azalea Festival. Visitors can drive or walk through the park to see beautifully manicured displays of azaleas, tulips, dogwoods, and wisteria. Muskogee is also home to several fascinating museums, including the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, which highlights the rich Native American culture of the area, and the Three Rivers Museum, which tells the story of the area’s development. There are numerous overnight options in Muskogee, including the charming Whitlock Wishouse Bed & Breakfast, housed in a historic mansion constructed in 1919.
Just north of Muskogee sits Sequoyah State Park. Situated on the shores of Fort Gibson Lake, the park features many options for outdoor fun, including a golf course, guided horseback rides, and many hiking trails. Lodging options at the park include a beautiful modern lodge, cozy Cottages, and plentiful RV and tent campsites.
Further up U.S. Highway 69, travelers will find the Route 66 city of Miami. It’s home to an architectural jewel in the 1929-built Coleman Theatre, which features a Spanish Mission Revival exterior and an elegant Louis XV interior. Hike, Bike, Meander Through the RGV
by Eryn Reddell WingertW arm South Texas weather allows more days to enjoy the outdoors. Cities across the Rio Grande Valley offer residents and visitors a variety of walking trails--not to mention hundreds of municipal and state parks to meander through. Here’s a sampling from across Valley.
Brownsville - Resaca de la Palma State Park, 1000 New Carmen Ave., is a little off the beaten path but worth visiting. The park’s Ebony Trail is part land and part boardwalk over a resaca bed. The park also has viewing stations to witness wildlife visiting water and welcomes bicyclists.
Edinburg - Take a relaxing stroll through the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands at 714 Raul Longoria. The 40-acre oasis offers a respite from the everyday. This park, with all its trails, offers visitors a slower-paced experience. Take a cue from the birds and butterflies. Plan to stay a while so you’ll have time to wander.
Harlingen - There are over 1,000 acres of park land with walking and nature trails. Native plants and wildlife--including birds, butterflies, and javelina--are part of the trails at Hugh Ramsey Nature Park, 1000
TX-499 Loop. The Arroyo Hike and Bike Trail, 1110 New Hampshire St., offers scenic views of the Arroyo Colorado waterway.
McAllen - The 2nd Street and Bicentennial trails stretch for miles and are perfect for walking, running, and bicycling; multiple parking spots are available along

Q&A with Legendary South Texas Weatherman Tim Smith
by Eryn Reddell WingertW eather is the all-important factor when deciding where to spend your winter months. To gain a better understanding of South Texas weather, Welcome Home Winter Texan went straight to weather guru extraordinaire Tim Smith, chief meteorologist for KRGV Channel 5 News.
A little background: Smith is originally from the Midwest. He grew up in Batesville, Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University with a journalism degree. He has lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 41 years, arriving in December 1981. Smith has served as KRGV’s chief meteorologist since 1983.
(Of note: This Q&A took place in late February when the average temperature across the Valley was 90 degrees, as a massive winter storm was making its way across the country.)
When is it officially winter? Next season, it begins December 21, 2023, at 9:27 p.m. The spring
equinox is Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 10:16 p.m.
The Valley doesn’t really have seasons, so when is our so-called winter? The three coldest months are December, January, and February, so, its relative; most of our winters aren’t cold at all. During the course of the winter, we’ll have a handful of chilly days-by our standards. Typically, we have at least one shot of cold; then we bounce right back to 80s [degrees] before and 80s afterwards.
What is the average temperature in the Valley during the season? Typically, the average high is 7374; average low is in the mid-to low 50’s. Climatologically, the coldest time is mid-January, based on McAllen temperatures. Some days are 85 and some are 55.
What should one pack in preparation for a South Texas winter? Flip flops, Bermuda shorts, and
Hey Dude’s. There will be days you’ll want a jacket, long pants… but don’t bring a bunch of coats. Just bring one because those days are limited.
How does our weather compare to Arizona and Florida? We have more ups and downs. Florida is more steady--a cold front or two-depends on where you are; they don’t get as warm as we do. Much more variety in weather here. Our averages are more similar. Arizona is dryer, and it can get pretty cold. They don’t get a lot of rain. Highs and lows are bigger. As for the Valley, you won’t get bored with our weather! It’s much more interesting to be here. It’s not the same all the time. I think that’s fascinating.
Its near 90 degrees this week. Is that normal? It’s 88 in Weslaco. South Padre Island was 71; depends on water temps at the Island. We had the big cold snap December 22, 23, and 24, but our average for the month was 2.4 degrees above normal, except for those three days.
What was your first winter in the RGV like? I left [Indiana] in December ’81; got here Christmas
Eve. When I left, they got a foot and a half of snow. When I got here, it was about 50 degrees and drizzly. I looked for my bathing suit to get in the pool at the apartment. My first thought: “I want to get in the pool!”
What’s your favorite thing to do in the winter? The Island. I love the Island. We spend a lot of time out there. I used to do a lot of golf. I’m going to get back to that--and bike riding, cycling. Being out on a pretty day, there’s nothing like it. Yesterday on the Island, middle of the afternoon, I took a four-mile walk on the beach, just enjoying the sunshine and nice weather.
What are your impressions of Winter Texans? How amazingly generous and fun our Winter Texans are. Any time we do a project, they’re in. Tim’s Coats, in particular. We’ve received thousands and thousands from our Winter Texan friends. I appreciate that so much. We changed that a little this year, not taking used, but they came through with cash. They’re always there to support. How much fun they are! We were at Upper Deck on the Island and some were doing karaoke; these people are talented. I just love them to death. A wealth of knowledge; I love hearing their backgrounds, their stories. •

What to Know About Progreso

A short walk across the Progreso International Bridge--over the Rio Grande River--and you’ll find a very welcoming community plus curio shops, pharmacies, restaurants, and bars. You can take advantage of services like manicures/pedicures, boot and shoe polishing, and dental work. What to know before you go?
Welcome Home Winter Texan asked the experts, you, our Winter Texans.

Life is a Sport in South Texas…
Story and Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert…at least it can be. There are so many sports activities to choose from during the winter. Take your pick from senior softball to horseshoes, shuffleboard to pickle ball, bicycling to paddle boarding, frisbee golf to traditional golf. It’s here, and all you have to do is step up to the plate.
The City of McAllen supports the Ed Martens Senior Texan Softball League by providing the Westside Softball Fields for practice and play Mondays through Thursdays. The League has been around for over 30 years, and the average player is in his or her 70s.
In Pharr, the Tropic Star RV Park is home to ten horseshoe courts and an active club that meets each weekday morning. The Park also holds a horseshoe competition for the annual Golden Olympics, hosted by McAllen Parks & Recreation.
Pickle ball may be the hip new thing in the United States, but it’s been hip in the Rio Grande Valley for a while now. Local resorts and RV parks saw the demand years ago and incorporated indoor and outdoor courts to accommodate our active winter visitors.
Down on South Padre Island, find water sports galore, including standup paddle boarding, kite surfing, and kayaking. The Laguna Madre Bay, which sits between mainland Texas and the Island, is home to calm waters ideal for paddling and kayaking. And for those windier days, you’ll catch air kite surfing. Whatever your sport, it’s here in South Texas, waiting for you to join the team! •
South Texas Entertainment a Big Draw
R ock, country, rhythm and blues, bluegrass, pop, theater, symphony, comedy, magic, festivals…it’s all here in the Rio Grande Valley!
Aside from the weather, entertainment tops the list of what draws winter visitors to South Texas. There’s something happening all the time, from a concert, dance, comedy or magic show to large theater productions and performances.
Welcome Home RGV hears from visitors over and over again, “If you’re bored here, it’s your own fault!” There are approximately 300 RV parks and resorts across the Valley hosting shows and dances, which are often open to
the public and within close driving proximity, making it easy to enjoy live entertainment each day of the week!
Each Winter Texan season, the variety of options expands as word spreads among entertainers that the area is a hotbed of opportunity.
This past season’s Entertainer Showcase was proof, hosting approximately 60 acts from across the country, many of them new to the area. Newcomers heard from other entertainers about opportunities to perform in South Texas.
How do you find out what’s going on?

McAllen Named in Top Five Safest Cities in America
McAllen’s SmartAsset.com ranking moved up three spots from 2022
M cAllen once again received recognition from SmartAsset.com for something many in the community already know, ranking third on its list of Top 10 Safest Cities in the United States. The financial website analyzed a core set of common safety factors to identify and rank the safest cities in America, looking at data from 200 of the largest cities. Since the last study, crime in the U.S. has continued its upward trend. As McAllen’s crime rate continues to decrease, the city moved up three spots from 2022 when it was ranked #6.
“This ranking only highlights what those of us in our community have always known: McAllen is a safe city,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This is because of our law-abiding community and brave, hardworking McAllen police officers, who not only protect and serve our community, its residents, and countless visitors on a daily basis but also have kept our crime rate dropping each year to the lowest it has ever been in the past 38 years.”
Safety is one of the top concerns
FIND A PLACE TO BELONG
for many families when picking a place to live. Many Americans look for low crime and other lowrisk factors to determine whether a new neighborhood--or even a new community--is safe for them.
To find the safest cities, SmartAsset compared 200 of the largest U.S. cities across the following metrics:
• Violent crime rate. The number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI’s 2021 Uniform Crime Reporting Database.
• Property crime rate. The number of property crimes per 100,000 residents. Data comes from the FBI’s 2021 Uniform Crime Reporting Database.
• Vehicular mortality rate. The number of deaths due to traffic accidents per 100,000 residents. Data comes from countyhealthrankings.org (2022).
• Drug poisoning mortality rate. The number of drug poisoning deaths per 100,000 residents. Data comes from countyhealthrankings.org (2022).
• Percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking. The percentage of adults who consumed more than four drinks of alcohol for women or five drinks of alcohol for men on a single occasion over a 30day period or who engage in heavy drinking, which is defined as drinking more than one drink
per day for women or two drinks a day for men on average. Data comes from countyhealthrankings.org (2022).
The vehicular mortality rate, drug poisoning mortality rate, and percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking are all

measured at the county level. Both violent and property crime rates are at the city level.
To find the final rankings, SmartAsset.com first ranked each city in each metric. Then they found the average ranking for every city, giving each metric an equal weight. The metro area with the best average ranking places first in the study, while the area with the lowest average ranking places last.
“McAllen is a great place to live, work, and play because of the investment in our McAllen police officers and our quality-oflife initiatives and amenities,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “This leads to a dynamic, vibrant city and community who take ownership in keeping their community safe, as well.”
McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez credits the low crime rate to the unwavering support of the McAllen community, its elected officials, and the dedicated work of all McAllen police officers and support personnel.
“Our community strives to prevent crime, to promote public safety, and to participate in the investigation of crime when it does occur. At the end of 2022, the City of McAllen recorded
its 13 th consecutive annual crime reduction and its lowest crime rate in 38 years. To this end, the McAllen Police Department expresses sincere appreciation to all members of our community and to the McAllen City Commission for their diligence and dedication to making public safety the top priority. The McAllen Police Department administration expresses special thanks to the men and women of the McAllen Police Department for their hard work and successful outcomes,” said Chief Rodriguez.
One key finding from the study is that cities in the Lone Star State rank safest. Texas is home to several of the nation’s safest cities, according to the metrics. Four out of the top five cities with the highest safety ratings are in Texas. All four have violent crime rates lower than 90% of the cities across the study. Joining McAllen on the list are the cities of Frisco at #1, McKinney at #2, Plano at #5, Laredo at #7, and El Paso at #12.
As part of this study, SmartAsset also set out to determine which of the safest cities are most affordable. To do this, SmartAsset ranked the 35 safest cities according to a home affordability metric: median annual housing costs as a percentage of median household income. Among the safest cities in America this year, McAllen was ranked #6 overall for affordability. •

Perspectives How to Deal With Skeptics
by Stacy McDonaldWho hath believed our report and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? ~Isaiah 53:1 KJV
It’s impossible to explain what happens to a person when he or she is born again by the power of the Holy Spirit of God. For some of us, there is an instant change in many areas of our lives, while for others, these changes take place at a steady progression in the process known as sanctification.
Regardless of how fast or slow this beautiful life-giving change takes place, one thing is certain to occur amongst us all, and that thing will prove to be one of the most trying (and possibly even painful) experiences we will ever know. People do not like change. And the people who have been a part of our lives up until our rebirth will NOT understand what has--and is--happening to us.
The apostle Paul explains why in 1 Corinthians 2:14: …the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned . This is why almost everyone around us will begin looking at us through skeptical eyes as they await our return to our former selves, the one they know and “love.” Some of them will entice us to go back to our former ways, while others will work to cast doubt in our minds and hearts as to the very truth of God’s Word; and still others will chide us to not take things so seriously.
We must remember that this pressuring barrage of temptation is no new tactic of the powers and principalities that press

against us. Even Jesus, who is the ONLY Begotten Son of God, had to undergo the very cunning temptations of the devil for 40 days immediately following His receiving of the Holy Spirit. How Jesus withstood this temptation is the exact same way--in fact, is the only way--we can, and that is through the power of the Word of God. Only the Word of God can give us the needed ammunition, the comfort, and the protection we need to endure and grow in faith.
If we neglect to set our hearts and minds on His Word, we will, without doubt, fall before we ever really learn to stand. And we will keep falling for the rest of our lives, missing opportunity after opportunity to walk in the perfect will of God. Those people who are doubting us now, those who are tempting and chiding us, could be the very ones God has sent us to share the Gospel-and His love--with, be it through our words, our example, or our testimonies. Remember, they are not our enemies. It is the powers and principalities, the spiritual wickedness in high places, that we battle against, not flesh and blood. It is their spirit that needs reborn, just like it was ours. •
Sandy Shares a Favorite Recipe From Kentucky
By Sandy OlsonThis is a most unusual and tasty bread, with a combination of ingredients you might not have used before when baking. Searching for shallots might take a bit of time, but you can find them in local grocery stores, especially those that sell “different” things, such as Sprouts.
Blue Cheese and Shallot Bread
½ cup chopped shallots
1 teaspoon ground mustard
3 tablespoons real butter (No margarine!)
¼ cup COLD real butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup of milk, not skim
1 tablespoon sugar
1 large egg
2½ teaspoons baking powder
¾ cup crumbled blue cheese
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In a small, heavy skillet, sauté the shallots in 3 tablespoons of butter until tender but not brown. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg,
blending well. Stir this into the dry mixture gently, just until moistened and no dry spots are visible. Fold in the two cheeses and the cooked shallots evenly but gently. Transfer the batter to a greased 8x4-inch loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes or until it tests as done with a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes; then remove the loaf to a wire rack. Serve thinly sliced as it’s rich in flavor.

Things I Have Learned
A somewhat random and reckless look at life from a fairly old guy
by Bill Ward Uniquely MeToday’s Wisdom: Stop letting other people’s wind determine the direction of your sail.
Way back in seventh grade, my friends all decided to go out for football. They talked me into joining them. In those days, junior-high football was seventh-through-ninth grades. I was likely the skinniest guy on the field.
All was well until I was put into a scrimmage. The other players basically ignored me, which was fine. Then, all of a sudden, someone fumbled, and there it was. The ball was laying on the ground right in front of me. I picked it up and took one step toward the goal line. Glory was just 20 yards ahead, in plain view. That one step ended up being my entire football career.
The next instant, I was airborne, me going “south head over teakettle” and the ball going north. I had been clotheslined by a ninth grader at full speed.

That was when it hit me that no amount of practice or determination was going to make me a football player. My talents would lie elsewhere.
One of the things I have learned in life is that following the crowd and trying to be the same often leads nowhere. It is nice to feel included, especially in junior high. Later in life, inclusion is still nice but better when we bring unique talent and character to the party.
In seventh grade, I could not see all the unique attributes that would develop in me over time. It is only looking back that they have become visible, many in ways I could not have anticipated. I suspect your stories are similar.
I no longer care if I am the same as
everyone else. I figure it is their gain when I am not. Today our value is in how we are unique, not in how we are the same. By now, you should be
familiar with your own unique talents. Retirement is the perfect time to cultivate them. I’m just sayin’. •
