THE 100 YEARS OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC STORY 28 October, 2018, will mark 100 years from the moment the independence of Czechoslovak Republic, predecessor of the Czech Republic, was declared in Prague’s Wenceslas Square to all the nations of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new sovereign state that appeared on the world’s map had to prove the world its viability in the difficult times after the end of WWI. It managed to keep its historic borders, carry out a much needed land reform, create a strong currency and continue with its successful industrial development. The young republic, lead by the popular and charismatic president T. G. Masaryk, was quick to earn international respect. The enthusiasm of that era has been reflected in values that the country can pride on to this day. The architecture of Czechoslovakia was among the most imaginative and bold, created in the spirit of Modernism by great architects like Adolf Loos, Mies van der Rohe, Jan Kotera, Josef Gocár and Dušan Jurkovic. Even Prague Castle, once the seat of the Kings of Bohemia and now of the Czech presidents, and the unforgettable dominant of the city, was altered with the unique touch of architect Jože Plecnik. The design from the heart of Europe was famous and much sought after, and the fine arts had their ambassadors in Paris and the USA: Alfons Mucha was one of the world’s most famous artists at the time and František Kupka was one of the founders of modern abstract art. Czechoslovak music, meanwhile, was played in opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe, with Leoš Janácek and Bohuslav Martinu considered among the most original composers of the time. Czechoslovak trade and industry earned an important reputation and the young country was the cradle of breakthrough inventions and smart technical solutions. The flagships were strong brands like the Škoda and Tatra car manufacturers, the footwear empire of Bat'a, the Jawa motorcycles or the beer Pilsner Urquell, all of which were a guarantee high quality and innovation. The world rediscovered the Czechoslovak spas, such as Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázne. Czechoslovak athletes and sports events oriented businesses successfully faced international competition. Czech crystal and jewellery were unique and imitated in other countries. Saaz hops became the holy grail of brewing and the beer travelled the world from this small republic in the middle of Europe on the wings high quality. The thus far hidden heritage of a nation began to see the light. Today, all generations are proud of how quickly a small country like this managed to become an important part of the European and international communities. Many other events, especially in 1938, 1948, and 1968, so called the “magic eights”, would have an important effect in the national identity and the fates of the people. But the real values prevailed and you can find their imprints and get to know them. They are everywhere in the country, you only have to look.

TIPSFORTRIPS Smetana’s Litomyšl 14/6 – 7/7 2018, Litomyšl Smetana’s Litomyšl is the second oldest music festival in the Czech Republic and one of the largest regularly held festivals of classical music. Its main program consists of opera productions and concert performances of operas, as well as gala concerts, oratories, cantatas and song evenings – forms where the vocal art is dominant. But symphonic, instrumental and chamber music aren’t forgotten, and neither are ballet and concerts in temples, promenades or even covering other genres. Every year, the festival hosts pretty much all the leading Czech interpreters as well as important foreign guests, which this year include the famous Mexican tenor Javier Camarena. The main venue is the gorgeous complex of the Litomyšl State Château, which in 1999 was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. The main concerts will mostly take place in the acoustically perfect second courtyard, below a unique retractable roof, and also in the riding hall, churches, Smetana’s house and selected places of the Pardubice Region. XVI. Všesokolský slet – The 16 th All-Sokol Rally 1 – 6 July 2018, Prague When Miroslav Tyrš and Jindřich Fügner founded in 1862 a society with a falcon (sokol) in its coat of arms, they wouldn’t believe that their idea will still touch people in the 21st century, and that their little society would become the grandest and most successful sports organization in Czech history. The goal of the society that wore different names over the years and now is called Sokol – the Czech Sokol Organization was -and still is- an improvement of the physical condition of the human body, as well as cultural and social activities. In every Czech and Moravian town you still can find a building with a gym, and -most of the times- a theatrical stage surrounded by a sports ground, owned by the Sokol organization. After six years, and for the 16 th time, Prague once again hosts one of the grandest Sokol festivals – the Sokol Rally, which will culminate on 5 and 6 July in the Eden Arena Stadium. The Sokol members will present 11 collective performances. The rally will be also attended by members of the overseas Sokol organizations, above all from the USA. www.sokol.eu

Harley-Davidson celebrates its 115 th anniversary in Prague 5 – 8 July 2018, Prague This Harley-Davidson party will be an experience like no other. 72 hours full of bikes, concerts, competitions, test rides, exhibitions, great food and drinks, and loads more fun, all in the country of the best beer, the most beautiful women and the oldest Harley-Davidson club in the world. Olomouc Baroque Festival – the 6 th edition 8 – 29 July 2018, Olomouc The city of Olomouc, Palacký University Arts Center – the Jesuit Convict Visitors will once again experience summer nights with Baroque music in the historical setting of the ancient city of Olomouc, in the Jesuit Convict. Music will take them back three centuries to the times when Baroque temples, fountains, and palaces were built in Olomouc. The program includes the Baroque serenatas, Baroque and Neo-Baroque operas. All the works will be performed by Ensemble Damian of Tomáš Hanzlík, the founder of the festival.

Czech Republic Motorcycle Grand Prix 3 – 5 August 2018, Brno, Masaryk Circuit The Czech Republic Motorcycle Grand Prix has been part of the World Championship since 1965. It takes place annually on the Masaryk Circuit, built in 1930, in a rangy and wooded terrain, which was extended to its current length of 5.5 km in 1987. Tens of thousands of visitors come to Brno to see the popular race. The Masaryk Circuit also hosts automobile and karts races and antique cars parades. On a regular basis, the Masaryk Circuit opens its gates to those who want to drive their own cars, motorcycles, in-line skates or bicycles. (see p. 52) www.automotodrombrno.cz

World Stamp Exhibition PRAGA 2018 15 – 18 August 2018, Prague, Hotel Clarion, Postal Museum, Mucha Museum Philately is often called the king of hobbies and in the Czech Republic it is at a high level not only thanks to the enthusiasts, but also to the high quality of the philatelic production. On the occasion of this year’s celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak Republic, Prague will host the World Stamp Exhibition PRAGA 2018. The first Czechoslovak postal stamp is celebrating the same anniversary. It was issued on this occasion and its author was the world-famous painter Alfons Mucha. PRAGA 2018 is held under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) and its goal is to promote philately and its culture, the cooperation among philatelist of the whole world and to present creativity and innovation in the preparation of exhibits. RETRO ’60S –– ’90S RETROMOIVES MOVIESOFofTHE the ’60s ’90s Dancing House Gallery 16 May – 15 October 2018

Spring through Autumn 2018, the Dancing House Gallery is dedicated to Czechoslovak cinematography. After the “Retro 1970s and 1980s” the success of the exhibition the gallery has prepared a unique films exhibition named RETRO MOVIES of the ’60s – ’90s presenting more than 200 costumes from almost 70 movies produced in the Czech Republic from the 1960s to the 1990s. All the success of the exhibition costumes are originals borrowed from the Barrandov Film Studios and the Czech Television, along with props, photographs, and sets. All exhibits are arranged in colorful scenes representing the most famous and typical element of the given movie. The exhibition carries on with a successful overview of fairy tale costumes called “How to Dress a Fairy Tale” that took place in the Strahov Monastery in Prague ten years ago. The selection of movies is based on the votes of 400 thousand film and television viewers, and represents a crosscut through the most popular Czechoslovak films of the period. RETRO MOVIES of the ’60s – ’90s is the greatest film exhibition since 1987. Most of the costumes and props have never been presented before. You can see, for example, costumes and props from popular film comedies including “cult” ones, such as “Marecek,

Pass Me the Pen”, “Who Wants to Kill Jessie”, as well as “I Enjoy the World with You”, selected as the best Czech comedy ever made. Films made by Oscar winner Jiří Menzel are very popular, too: “The Snowdrop Festival” and “My Sweet Village”. His Oscar winning movie “Closely Watched Trains” will be remembered by the famous spicy take with the butt-stamping. Many enthusiasts will surely also admire popular TV series for children, such as the fairy tale “Arabela”, “Křeček in Night Gown”, and many others. The immortal TV sci-fi series “Visitors” beloved by both children and their parents will be commemorated both by costumes and the famous super-computer named the “Central Human Brain”. Visitors can also look forward to filmsets from the first Czech film musical “Hop-picking Elders” from 1964 installed on a symbolic dance floor with original props from the movie. The exhibits also include the iconic original textile-body vehicle from the popular comedy “Waiter, Scarper!” Along with film props, illustrations by leading Czech cartoonists Adolf Born and Kája Saudek will also be exhibited. They are inseparable from popular film comedies “How the World Is Losing Poets”, and the comics comedy “Who Wants to Kill Jessie”.

PRAGUE PROMS 2018 Prague Proms 2018 14 th Annual, June 19 – July 19, 2018

Dear Friends, We would like to invite you to the Prague Proms International Music Festival this summer. As in the thirteen previous editions, we carry on with our proven dramaturgy featuring renowned artists and a carefully curated program. Mascagni’s Messa di Gloria is scheduled for the first concert in June. Marcello Rota is going to conduct the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and the Kühn Mixed Choir, featuring outstanding solo tenor Petr Nekoranec and bass baritone Boris Prýgl. Classical music will also be presented with a concert featuring Swedish trombonist, composer and excellent conductor Christian Lindberg, renowned for his extensive discography and phenomenal instrument artistry. Since the festival has mostly a relaxed character, we have once again focused on jazz. American singers will be represented by Los Angeles star Monica Mancini, who will commemorate her father, the legendary Henry Mancini. She has been singing since she was fourteen and has worked with Quincy Jones, Placido Domingo, and Michael Jackson. Her program companion will be the famous Kurt Elling, recognized as the best jazz singer in the world. He is a Grammy Award winner and has been nominated another thirteen times for this prestigious award. Keyboard enthusiasts will surely appreciate the performance of the great jazz-rock pianist Chick Corea, who has recorded with Miles Davis, among many others. Chris Brubeck and his excellent partners, as well as the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, famous “from Singapore to New York”, will surely provide the audience with an equally great experience. Cirque is the name of a new performance brought to Prague by Austrian Mnozil Brass, a septet of excellent and entertaining musicians. In order to enrich the genre variety, we have also invited domestic folk singer and song writer Xavier Baumaxa.

The Prague Proms Festival also presents theatrical performances with musical themes. This year’s choice is the Dejvice Theater and its play “Brian”, based on the life of the Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones.

Monica Mancini The festival traditionally closes with the Hollywood Night. This year’s 21 st edition of the event will once again be under the baton of the legendary and extravagant wizard Carl Davis. The true film music enthusiasts can look forward to a unique concert of Ennio Morricone in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House.

Those who love brass and organ temple music can take a trip to the St. Barbara cathedral in Kutná Hora, a traditional annual location of one of the festival concerts. The Kalkant project opens the doors to the youngest generation of Czech virtuosos, who will present themselves in the Liechtenstein Palace, in the Lesser Town of Prague (Malá Strana).

NATIONAL GALLERY PRAGUE National Gallery in Prague Jiří Kolář – The Grimace of the Century

66 collages that map the dramatic events that took place that year in Czechoslovakia. It will be complemented by other cycles of mostly unknown works that show how openly Kolář created the orbis picture of our times from the second half of the 1940s until the end of his life. The exhibition will include selected works from the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, the Kampa Museum, the estates of Jiří Kolář, the Neues Museum Nürmberg and other private collections.

25 May – 2 September 2018 Kinsky Palace, Staroměstské náměstí 12 Prague 1 Although the National Gallery in Prague hosted a retrospective of Jiří Kolář in 2000, a figure like him demands to be explored once again to find a way to leave stereotypes aside and grasp his multifaceted work through multiple points of view. Jiří Kolář (1914–2002) was Czech poet and artist known worldwide thanks to his collages and experimental art. He was sent to prison between 1952 and 1953 for criticising Communism. In 1977, he signed the Charter 77 (a declaration of a civic group criticising politics and the state power in Czechoslovakia). Later, in 1979 he and his wife Běla Kolářová were not allowed to return to Czechoslovakia from abroad and they lived in Paris from 1980. They both returned to the Czech Republic in 1997. After very interesting works that were right on the border between poetry and visual arts, Kolář began to produce only visual works. He experimented with existing collage techniques, but gradually started to develop new ones – confrontage, froissage, rollage, etc. The exhibition focuses of the works of Kolář that, connected to his poetry, show the unorthodox manner in which he can artistically formulate his commentary of the world. An important part of the exhibition will consist of Deník 1968 (Diary 1968), a set of

24 April – 15 July 2018 Trade Fair Palace, 4 th floor – eastern wing Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and the Viennese modernism in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague The year 2018 marks the 100 th anniversary of the death of two major artists of the turn of the 19 th and 20 th centuries – Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – Feb. 6, 1918) and Egon Schiele (June 12, 1890 – Oct. 31, 1918). The collections of the National Gallery in Prague house the key works by both artists – the paintings The Virgin and Water Castle, by Klimt, and the Pregnant Woman and Death, Still Life with Flowers, Dead City, and drawings Seated Nude and Seated Woman with Bent Knees, by Schiele. The new display in the permanent exhibition on the fourth floor of the Trade Fair Palace shows Klimt’s influence on Schiele and a history of acquisitions of individual artworks, but it also puts them in a context of the work by their well-known and half-forgotten contempora-

ries and followers of the Viennese art scene, such as Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956), Emil Orlik (1870–1932), Alfred Kubin (1877–1959), Carl Otto Czeschka (1878–1960), Richard Teschner (1879–1948), Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) and Max Oppenheimer (1885–1954).

František Kupka, 1871–1957 7 September 2018 – 20 January 2019 Waldstein Riding School, Prague 1 The National Gallery in Prague is preparing a retrospective of world-famous Czech painter and graphic artist František Kupka (1871–1957) in collaboration with the French Réunion de musées nationaux – Grand Calais, the Centre Pompidou and Ateneum Art Museum/Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki, Finland. The exhibition will show Kupka’s entire oeuvre, from his early works of the 1890s to his abstract artworks of the 1950s. Thanks to the French partner, a unique collection of oil paintings, works on paper, prints and documentary material could be assembled to be presented in the Grand Palais in Paris, in spring of 2018, then in the National Gallery in Prague, in autumn of 2019 (in an altered form), and at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinky, in the spring of 2019. The Prague exhibition will show artworks from the National Gallery in Prague as well as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Albertina Museum in Vienna. The chronological exhibition will be divided by theme to allow the viewer to follow the artist’s path from symbolism to abstraction (of which Kupka was an originator), but also the transformation of the society and the major themes of his time. The retrospective will focus on Kupka’s symbolist paintings, first expres-

sionist portraits, path to abstract art, colour verticals, vocabulary of forms and colours, machinism and geometric abstraction. The many artworks on paper will show Kupka as a satirical draughtsman and brilliant illustrator, an artist interested in philosophy, Greek and Roman art, religion and science.

set design, featuring maypoles and dancing hens, creates a wonderful summer atmosphere full of sunshine. The detailed characters and poetic lyricism perfectly suit the story. The ballet is laced with exuberant good humour. La Fille mal gardée is one of Ashton’s most virtuoso choreographies, difficult in the series of energetic pas de deux and solos that express the youthful passion of Lise and her beloved Colas. And the best is that the viewer does not need to know the story in advance in order to understand and enjoy it. The Gestures and the characters are so expressive that they tell everything.

Music: Louis Joseph Ferdinand Hérold Choreography: Frederick Ashton Premiered on 19 & 20 April 2018 The National Theatre Prague This fasinating comedy undoubtedly belongs to the treasure of the world of ballet and its story is appealing to audiences of all genearations. Some of the finest dancers worldwide have appeared in Sir Frederick Ashton’s highly acclaimed ballet, which has been staged at more than 35 theatres around the world, including the Paris Opera, Bolshoi Theatre, the American Ballet Theatre, the Boston Ballet and National Ballet of Canada. The story is based on a 1789 French ballet originally created by Jean Dauberval. John Lanchbery adapted and arranged the music for Ashton’s ballet from Ferdinand Hérold’s 1828 score. Taking place in a pastoral setting inspired by Ashton’s love for the Suffolk countryside, the cartoon-like

Premiered on 7 & 9 June 2018 The National Theatre Prague J. W. Goethe’s poetry and prose have inspired numerous artists, including opera composers. The most accomplished adaptations of his works include French operas: Ambroise Thomas’s Mignon, Charles Gounod’s Faust and Jules Massenet’s Werther. Soon after its publication, Goethe’s 1774 epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther became a cult book, one in which the readers recognised themselves, with a number of them even taking the hero’s example and committing suicide. The work is a seminal text of the German proto-Romantic literary movement known as Sturm und Drang, whose adherents placed emphasis on human emotionality as the answer to the cool rationalism of the era of the Enlightenment. Linking up to his teacher Thomas and his colleague Gounod, Massenet’s compositional style is primarily noted for abundant distinct melody and colourful orchestration, inspired in part by Richard Wagner. His suggestible musical idiom serves to underline a story replete with passions, which the protagonists fail to satisfy. Massenet’s Werther, one of the most acclaimed French operas, is returning to the National Theatre in Prague almost 80 years after the previous production, performed from 1927 to 1939. STORIES OF STATEHOOD Prague Castle Riding School 10 May – 31 October 2018

This exhibition, especially dedicated to the history of the Czech State Symbols, is quite exceptional among the series of exhibitions dedicated to the foundation of the independent an Czechoslovak state, and not only because of all the exhibits concentrated in one place, but also because of its architectural concept. The stories of the exhibited objects form an axis that aims to show visitors that, even though the Czech state symbols were misused throughout the country’s history, they still represented something our ancestors were willing to give their lives for. The exhibition will include a case showing the highest state decorations awarded in the last 100 years as well as unique archives linked to critical moments of modern Czech history. (see p. 3)

THE PRAGUE CASTLE GUARD Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Palace 28 June – 31 October 2018

The birth of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 is inseparably linked to the establishment of the Castle Guard. This military unit was established after Prague Castle became the seat of the President of the new republic to provide external security and defense of both the castle complex and the buildings that serve as seat of the President and his guests, for example, the presents Summer Residence at Château Lány. The unit also military honours, especially during official visits of foreign dignitaries and the reception by the President of the heads of embassy missions. The Castle Guard wears a specific type of uniform designed in 1990 for then President Václav Havel by artist Theodor Pištěk, who won an Oscar for the costume design of Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus. The exhibition will show the Castle Guard’s one hundred year history through hundreds of photos and several 3D exhibits. (see p. 3)

St. George Convent

The St. George Convent was established in 973 by Prince Boleslav and his sister Mlada for the Benedictine order. It was dissolved in 1782, and reconstructed and newly opened in 1976. Open daily: 9 am to 5 pm (IV–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–III)

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 32. Golden Lane

Golden lane features tiny houses from the 16th century, built into late Gothic fortifications.

Daliborka Tower

The fortified Daliborka Tower was built in 1496 by Benedikt Rejt as a part of the castle’s fortifications. It was converted into a jail until the end of the 18th century.

Mihulka Powder Tower

Loretto

Prague 1, Loretánské náměstí 7 Loretto was once a goal of pilgrims, with a copy of Santa Casa; it was built from 1626 to 1631. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of Our Lord was built in 1734–35. The front façade was rebuilt from 1720 to 1722 by K. I. Dienzenhofer. The tower houses 27 Loretto bells which play the melody of the Our Lady Chorus. The most valuable item is the liturgical treasury, with a diamond monstrance called Prague Sun; it weighs over 12 kg and is adorned with more than 6,000 diamonds. St. George Basilica

The Romanesque St. George Basilica was built in 920, close to the Benedictine monastery; it was reconstructed in the 10th and 12th centuries.

Royal Summer Palace (Belvedere)

This is the most remarkable Renaissance building in Prague. It was built from 1538–1552 following the design of Paolo della Stella, and completed in 1563 by the architect B. Wohlmut. Its garden contains the Singing Fountain, where drops of water

The Royal Garden was laid out in 1534 under the reign of Ferdinand I and refined under the rule of Rudolf II. The Ball Game Hall was once used as a barracks and is now used to house exhibitions. During the first phase, the Ledebour and Small Pálffy Gardens underwent reconstruction. These gardens were opened to the public in June 1995. The second phase – finished in August 2000 – covers the three remaining gardens (the Great Pálffy Garden was opened in 1997). The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. It was not until 1989 that reconstruction commenced, led by the new owner – the State Preservation Institute. The reconstruction

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. Ledebour Garden is a Baroque, terrace garden from the first third of the 18 century, in about 1787 styled most probably by I. J. Palliardi. In between the salla terrena and the opposite–side wall, flat with the staircase and the fountain with the statue of a giant, a parterre with a recently-built basin. Malostranské nám. 556/29 The construction of this church started in 1704 on the site of a small, older Gothic church. The frontispiece was finished in 1710 and the nave, with its wreath of chapels, was consecrated in 1711. This part was clearly built by Christopher Dienzenhofer. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. The Crucifixion (1646) in St. Barbara’s chapel and Christ’s Passion series (1670), all pictures by Karel Škréta, originally created for the Jesuit Profession House,

The Petřín Observation Tower

The construction of the Petřín observation tower was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club on the occasion of the Jubilee Land’s Exhibition. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It

form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. The Petřín hill funicular railway

After its renewal in 1985, the Petřín hill funicular railway (lanovka) was integrated into Prague’s public transportation system. You may transfer onto it at the Újezd tram stop – it takes you up to Nebozízek and Petřín. To ride the funicular railway, you need a valid Prague transportation ticket which is good for transfers. 9 am–11:20 pm (XI–III), 9 am–11:30 pm (IV–X)

CharlesBridge (Karlůvmost) The Charles Bridge was built in 1357 by Charles IV. Church of Our Lady before Týn

(Staroměstské náměstí) The historical centre of the town, the place of the most significant events, a unique complex of architectural and historic memories. In the middle there is a monument of Master John Huss by Ladislav Šaloun.

After St. Vitus Cathedral it is the most remarkable Prague Gothic church with Baroque interior. In the church there is the tomb of Danish astrologer Tycho Brahe. Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–1 pm and 3 pm–5 pm ❼ 10 am –noon. Visits of groups are possible with reservations. Admission: 25 CZK

The Old-Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock (horologe)

House At the Stone Bell

The Town Hall was built in 1338, in 1364 adjoining the tower with the chapel, in 1470 the Town Hall was reshaped in the late Gothic style. The horologe (orloj) is from the beginning of the 15 century; in the upper part every hour (9 am–11 pm) the procession of the 12 apostles in succession appears at the window. (Under reconstruction till August, 2018)

The most precious burgess house of medieaval age, originally Romanesque, whose rare Gothic form and two-storey front face of 14 century was renovated in 1988. Currently it serves as an exhibition hall (City Gallery Prague). Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–8 pm

The National Theatre

New Town City Hall

Prague 1, Národní 2 Neo-Renaissance building of 1868 to 1881 built according to plans of J. Zítek. In 1881 the finished theatre burnt, and was reconstructed by architect Josef Schulz in 1883.

Prague 2, Karlovo náměstí 23 A complex of Gothic buildings from the turn of the 14th and the 15th centuries, reconstructed in the Renaissance style during the years 1520–1526. They include a tower with the Holy Virgin Chapel, two Gothic Halls and a Renaissance Hall. Here was the seat of the Administration Offices of the New Town of Prague from 1377 to 1784. The defenestration of Catholic city councellors by Prague Hussites occurred here on July 30, 1419. The Tower is open for tourists daily except Mondays from 10 am–6 pm (March, 23 – November), halls can be visited while exhibitions are held there. Admission (the Tower): 60/40/130 CZK

Emmaus

Prague 2, Vyšehradská 49 The Emmaus Monastery was founded by Charles IV in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines with the Church of Our Lady and Slavonic patrons. At the end of World War II it was burnt by bombing. Two asymmetrical spires were finished in 1967. Open: ❶–❺ 11 am–2 pm (XI–III), ❶–❻ 11 am–5 pm (V–IX), ❶–❺ 11 am–5 pm (IV, X) Admission: 60/40/120 CZK

“Slavin”, the final resting-place of the most significant personalities of the Czech nation. Slavín was built between 1889 and 1893. Above the central memorial at Slavín is a sarcophagus with an allegorical winged statue the Genius Patriae. The motto of the Slavín cemetery is engraved above the name plates: Though dead, they still speak. To date, more than 600 personalities from the world of Czech culture and education are buried here. They include, for example, the composers Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, the painter Alfons Mucha, the opera singer Ema Destinnová, the writer Karel Čapek, the Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský and many others. The Slavín-Cemetery is open daily: 8 a.m.–6 p.m (III, IV, X), 8 a.m.–7 p.m. (V–IX), 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (XI–II)

Vyšehrad

Prague 2, V Pevnosti 159/5 On a rock over the River Vltava, this is the oldest seat of the Přemyslid princes. The most ancient building in Vyšehrad is the rotunda of St. Martin. In the vicinity of St. Peter and Paul’s Church is the residence of canons, casemates, a park, and a cemetery with the tombs of famous representatives of Czech culture (Slavín). Buses link the capital city not only with individual parts of the Czech Republic but also with all of Europe. Regular lines run to all the significant places in the European Union as well as outside of it. The most important bus depot is the Florence Central Bus Station, which is located in the very centre of the city.

The tickets are available at some Underground stations, at Transport Inquiries, at shops selling newspapers and cigarettes (with inscription Tabák), at some groceries, reception desks, travel services, yellow vending machines by the transport means stations. All lines of the underground operate from 5.00 am till midnight. Tram and bus timetables are placed at all stops. Funicular [(Prague 5-Újezd), stop of trams 6, 9, 12, 15, 20, 22 – Nebozízek – Petřín)] operates from 9 am till 11:30 pm (IV–X); from 9 am till 11:20 pm (XI–III), daily. Stickers are available at almost every petrol station or post office in the Czech Republic. Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) does not have its own selling points. When entering the Czech Republic on motorways D1 (from Poland near Bohumín), D2 (from Slovakia near Břeclav), D5 (from Germany near Rozvadov) and D8 (from Germany near Petrovice), the sticker can be bought on the first rest area after the border.

A proof of payment of the fee is a 2-part sticker. Part one of the sticker is to be placed on the inside of the windscreen. Part two is to be retained.

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre,you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest. (see p. 6)

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. You can visit historical landmarks and the Telč undergrounds, now open to the public, located below most of the houses on the Zacharias of Hradec square and part of the chateau complex. You can also visit festivals, concerts, exhibitions at the city gallery, or a historical festival organized every year, moderated by the historical personalities Zacharias of Hradec, and Katerina of Wallenstein.

From Adlof Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. Visitors can peek in the Telč undergrounds in their “raw” condition that continues along the entire square. They can also enter the renovated rooms, where modern projection technology present the city of Telč and its surroundings, as well important points of the history of its development.

The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. They offer a lot of cultural and sports activities. The surroundings are criss-crossed with cycling trails, where you can admire the uniqueness, charm and history of the region. Lednice is a popular tourist destination thanks to its fairy-tale château and the surrounding landscape. Though, in recent years, also thanks to its successfully developing spas. The main therapeutic source are the mineral waters rich in iodine-bromide sourced from a nearby well. Thanks to its iodine contents, its quality is one of the best of its type in Europe. In 2009, the Lednice Spas were granted the status of therapeutic spa.

The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe.The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden.

There are fountains among the colourful flowerbeds and green labyrinths, and the very centre of the garden is dominated by a rotunda with unique artistic decorations and a unique Foucault pendulum. One of the most attractive parts of the Flower garden is a 244-metre-long colonnade with statues of ancient gods and other historical figures of antiquity. The construction according to the design by Giovanni PietroTencalla was completed in 1671.

BAROQUE PEARL ON GREEN HILL

Olomouc is one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe, the pearl of Moravia, and the most beautiful city in the Czech Republic and a “hidden treasure of Europe”, according Lonely Planet. There you can find breathtaking baroque churches, beautiful palaces, charming stone-paved lanes, flowers and green areas. Next to Prague, it is the city with the highest concentration of marvelous landmarks in the Czech Republic. Olomouc also boasts several European rarities, the largest baroque statuary – the Holy Trinity Column, a significant UNESCO landmark. Olomouc is the site of an ancient university, an archbishopric, a philharmonic orchestra, numerous museums, theaters, and clubs, as well as the location of countless interesting culture events and festival. Žďár nad Sázavou lies in the beautiful countryside of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Area. The village emerged along the Cistercian Monastery founded in 1252, and was promoted to city in 1607. Today’s dynamic city is a modern center of the region, and – thanks of the magnificent nearby UNESCO landmark – an ever more popular tourist destination, and a gateway to the most beautiful part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands Region. The St. Johannus Nepomuceni pilgrimage church on Green Hill (Zelená hora) is a state-of-the-art work in the Bohemian baroque Gothic. Its extraordinary value was rewarded with its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was built between 1719 and 1722 by one of the greatest Bohemian baroque architects, Jan Blažej Santini Aichel. The ambit surrounding the temple was built on a decagonal pattern while the temple itself has the shape of a pentagram. The entire complex has five entrances, inside the temple there are five chapels and five altars. On top of the cupola there is a big tongue, the attribute of St. Johannus Nepomuceni. The entire structure combines two architectonic styles: Gothic and baroque. The main altar features a saint, standing on a globe, optically rising up. On the globe you can find the five octagonal Cistercian stars, representing the five continents where Christianity has spread.

KUTNÁHORA Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; the town’s two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. “Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, is today the home of the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys and received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and a torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. (Open: April – November) Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

The somber Petrovy Kameny (Peter’s Stones), known for the medieval witch hunts, are a good starting point for a climb to Praděd (1492 m), the highest mountain of Moravia and Silesia. From the top of the 162-meter tower on the summit you can have an unforgettable view. On a good visibility day, you can see the upper reservoir of the Dlouhé Stráně pumped storage power plant and distant mountain ranges such as High Tatra, Small and Big Fatra, Beskydy, and Krkonoše. SLAVONICE –FLORENCE OFSOUTHBOHEMIA After competing with dozens of other towns, Slavonice was chosen in 2017 as the Czech Republic’s Historical Town of the year. Since 1995 this award has been granted every year to the best revitalisation program of urban conservation areas. Thanks to its historical and cultural values, the town is now a candidate to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. This once almost forgotten city near the triangle of Bohemia, Moravia and Germany, with a history dating back to the early XIII century, known as the Pearl of the Renaissance has a lot to offer. You will be charmed by the Renaissance burghers’ houses and their façades richly decorated with gables and figurative Sgraffito that surround two of the squares in the centre of town. TÁBOR This year marks the 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the Independent Czechoslovak State and if you are planning a trip to the south of Czech country, do not forget to stop for a couple of days in the picturesque city of Tábor, which will charm you, not only with its medieval atmosphere and interesting architectural monuments, but also with a wide range of exhibitions and cultural events with the First Czechoslovak Republic as their theme. 22 December: Steam Train with President Masaryk On its way from České Budějovice to Prague, the historic steam train with the saloon car of the first Czechoslovak President, T. G. June: the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia and Italy An exhibition in the City Library recalling the merits the Czechoslovak Legionnaires had in the creation of the State that will include a lecture on the figures of the Legionnaires from Tábor.

PÍSEK – the poetic beauty on the river Otava We invite you to a town in the northern part of South Bohemia, with a population of 30 thousand, about 100 kilometers from Prague. Písek boasts the title “The best town to live in the Czech Republic”, and it is popular among tourists who look for high quality services, numerous places of interest and activities. A Stone Bridge spans the river Otava whose auriferous sand gave the town its name (sand = písek), and it is the oldest structure of its kind in the country. The early-Gothic Royal Castle is another landmark reminiscing the time when Písek was founded (1243), and that now houses the local Prácheň Regional Museum. The deanery Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary, with its 72-meter-high tower, dominates the town. Both the church and the tower are open for visitors. The recent investments in the revitalization of the historical center of Písek are evident at every step. On a groomed promenade on the banks of the Otava, along the fortification walls, is the original mill turned into the Municipal Electric Power Plant that today houses the museum of lighting. You can have a rest in a cozy park in the former castle moat. Behind the baroque

Town Hall, on one of the courtyards, you can find a former Malthouse, which, after costly renovations, has been turned into a center of illustrations for children and a playful gallery, as well as the Tourist information center and an exhibition on malting. Písek offers pleasant cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous events like the Town Festival (8 – 10 June 2018), the music festival Summer Festival (21 July 2018), the Folklore Festival (16 – 19 August 2018), and the Beer Festival (7 – 8 September 2018). Each year big sand sculptures are built by the Stone Bridge to adorn the town for the whole summer. In 2018, they will portray figures related the events that surrounded the declaration of the independent Czechoslovak State one hundred years ago in Písek. Písecké hory (Písek Hills), next to the town’s eastern outskirts, offer excellent conditions for walks, longer hikes and cycling tours. You can learn about natural places of interest and enjoy views of the South-Bohemian countryside full of fishponds and the foothills of the Šumava mountain range. The poetic valley of the Otava invites for cycling tours as well as canoeing down to Písek, or even further to the majestic Zvíkov or Orlík Castles. You can get to Písek from Prague comfortably by bus.

HISTORYANDCULTURE INPRACHATICE Prachatice is a historical town located in the western part of South Bohemia and a major cultural centre in Šumava (Bohemian Forest). It was founded on one of the most important trade routes of the Middle Ages known as the Golden Route, or Zlatá stezka, which linked Bohemia and Bavaria through the wild and impenetrable forests of Šumava. In the Middle Ages, it became remarkably significant thanks to the salt trade, which was transported on caravans of pack animals from Passau to Prachatice. The XVI century was the most prosperous period for Prachatice, which can be seen in the preserved Gothic and Renaissance historical centre of town, full of richly ornamented buildings, massive gates and the medieval fortifications. Prachatice’s most famous native is St. John Nepomucene Neumann, a Czech Catholic missionary whose imprint can be found in the town and its surroundings. Between June and September there are unique tours of the tower of the Church of St. Jacob, which offers unusual views of the city’s skyline. Other interesting places worth a visit are the Otto Herbert Hajek Cultural Centre, the Lower Gate Gallery, the Bobbin Lace Museum, the Museum of Czech Marionettes and Circus and the Prachatice Museum. Those who enjoy light hiking can take on the sightseeing trail around Prachatice, with historical and natural places of interest and technical monuments that leads to spots with great views. The trail is easy, ideal

for families with children. From Prachatice, you can also follow the the Golden Salt Route, indicated with the yellow hiking markets and the symbol of a pack animal. The trail has several information boards that describe historical events. A challenge for more experienced hikers is the climb to Libín hill (1093 m), which will reward them with gorgeous views of Šumava from its 27 metre observation tower. Prachatice is also a town where culture never sleeps and innumerable events, the most important of which undoubtedly is the Golden Salt Route Festival (Slavnosti solné Zlaté stezky), on 29–30/6/ 2018, that celebrates the importance this medieval trade route had for the city, The two-day festivities begin, as back in the day, with the arrival of a caravan of pack animals pulling carts loaded with salt. Jugglers, clowns, craftsmen and musicians will show their arts while a historical procession with drums and flag-bearers goes through town.
