THE 100 YEARS OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC STORY 28 October, 2018, will mark 100 years from the moment the independence of Czechoslovak Republic, predecessor of the Czech Republic, was declared in Prague’s Wenceslas Square to all the nations of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new sovereign state that appeared on the world’s map had to prove the world its viability in the difficult times after the end of WWI. It managed to keep its historic borders, carry out a much needed land reform, create a strong currency and continue with its successful industrial development. The young republic, lead by the popular and charismatic president T. G. Masaryk, was quick to earn international respect. The enthusiasm of that era has been reflected in values that the country can pride on to this day. The architecture of Czechoslovakia was among the most imaginative and bold, created in the spirit of Modernism by great architects like Adolf Loos, Mies van der Rohe, Jan Kotera, Josef Gocár and Dušan Jurkovic. Even Prague Castle, once the seat of the Kings of Bohemia and now of the Czech presidents, and the unforgettable dominant of the city, was altered with the unique touch of architect Jože Plecnik. The design from the heart of Europe was famous and much sought after, and the fine arts had their ambassadors in Paris and the USA: Alfons Mucha was one of the world’s most famous artists at the time and František Kupka was one of the founders of modern abstract art. Czechoslovak music, meanwhile, was played in opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe, with Leoš Janácek and Bohuslav Martinu considered among the most original composers of the time. Czechoslovak trade and industry earned an important reputation and the young country was the cradle of breakthrough inventions and smart technical solutions. The flagships were strong brands like the Škoda and Tatra car manufacturers, the footwear empire of Bat'a, the Jawa motorcycles or the beer Pilsner Urquell, all of which were a guarantee high quality and innovation. The world rediscovered the Czechoslovak spas, such as Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázne. Czechoslovak athletes and sports events oriented businesses successfully faced international competition. Czech crystal and jewellery were unique and imitated in other countries. Saaz hops became the holy grail of brewing and the beer travelled the world from this small republic in the middle of Europe on the wings high quality. The thus far hidden heritage of a nation began to see the light. Today, all generations are proud of how quickly a small country like this managed to become an important part of the European and international communities. Many other events, especially in 1938, 1948, and 1968, so called the “magic eights”, would have an important effect in the national identity and the fates of the people. But the real values prevailed and you can find their imprints and get to know them. They are everywhere in the country, you only have to look.

17 November – 5 December 2018, Brno The program of the Janáček Brno 2018 festival is dedicated to the 100 th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic. The festival is going to present complete stage oeuvre of the composer Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) whose life was closely tied with the Brno. The program includes orchestral and chamber music concerts, stage performances of operas, solo and vocal recitals, and choir concerts. Wine Festival ČESKÝ KRUMLOV 26 October – 30 November 2018, Český Krumlov (UNESCO sight) Český Krumlov Wine Festival brings an enticing mosaic of wine experiences. Their special menu will be served from 26 th October to 30 th November 2018. St. Martin traditionally arrives on his white horse on the 11 th day in November bringing not only the first snow, but also the first wine of the year, marking the beginning of the Feast of St. Martin in Český Krumlov. Selected local restaurants will offer St. Martin’s wine, roast goose and other specialties. Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival 2018 22 November – 2 December 2018, Prague This festival has been organized since 2013 as a celebration of piano and the greatest Czech piano player, Rudolf Firkušný. The festival’s format is not grandiose; in one week it offers a series of recitals featuring the best world pianists as well as domestic stars. The sixth edition of the Rudolf Firkušný Piano Festival brings six characteristic concerts. The opening concert already goes beyond the scope of the festival with legendary jazz American pianist, Monty Alexander. The following evening will present the latest winner of the famous Van Cluburn piano competition,

Sunwoo Yekwona, from South Korea, who will play Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, accompanied by the KBS Symphony Orchestra, one of the best Asian orchestras. Miroslav Sekera is going to represent the Czech piano scene. It has been 35 years since he starred as little Mozart in Forman’s Amadeus and over those years he has won awards in numerous important competitions, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The Floorball World Championship 2018 1 – 9 December 2018, Prague The 12 th edition of the men’s world championship brings to Prague 16 teams from Europe, America, Australia, and Asia. The preliminary matches were played by 32 national teams. According to the terms, the Czech team was adopted automatically as the team of the organizing country. The matches will take place in two locations in Prague: the O2 Arena, the largest sports hall in the Czech Republic that seats up to 17,000 visitors, and in the Sparta Arena with a capacity 1,700 visitors.

The Czech Christmas Mass

The third race in the Biathlon World Cup series 2018/2019, organized by the International Biathlon Union, is taking place in the ski complex Vysočina Arena, in Nové Město na Moravě. It’s scheduled for the end of the week before Christmas. The best world biathlonists will compete in sprint (10 km men, 7,5 km women), pursuit race (12,5 km men, 10 km women), and mass start race (15 km men, 15,5 km women). Advent and Christmas

The Czech Christmas Mass, composed by Jakub Jan Ryba (1765–1815), every year, during Advent and Christmas, fills churches and concert halls with enthusiastic listeners and it is a symbol of the season. It was a big hit already in 1796, when it was premiered in a little church in Rožmitál, in Central Bohemia, during the midnight Christmas Mass. It was a modest performance, only a choir and the composer on organ. Today you can expect an orchestra, a big choir, and four soloists. According to experts, this compositions is not a classical Latin mass; it is melodic and poetic, which has made it so popular. Although the gifted composer, writer, and teacher Jakub Jan Ryba did not live a very happy life, this composition doesn’t bear any trace of it. He embodied in it joy that can still be felt by today’s listeners, both in Bohemia and throughout Europe. www.prague.eu

He attained international fame in Paris at the turn of the 20 th century for his original Secessionist decorative art. He saw his own purpose in life, however, in a project that he regarded as much more important: The Slav Epic, a collection of twenty monumental paintings that he worked on between 1912 and 1926. The complete collection was presented to the Prague public for the first time in 1928 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the independence of the Czechoslovak state. After two years, The Slav Epic is again presented to the public. This time on the premises of the Municipal House in Prague, connected with the founding of Czechoslovakia and with another work by Alfons Mucha, who decorated the Mayor’s Hall there. The presentation of Mucha’s Slav Epic in the Municipal House is a worthy cintribution to the 100 th anniversary of the independent Czechoslovak state in 1918. The exhibition space of the Municipal House is one of the most representative in Prague and its Art Nouveau character is very closely related to Mucha’s decorative work. PORTHEIMKA GLASS MUSEUM Portheimka Glass Museum summer palace Portheimka, a Baroque pearl of the Prague district of Smíchov, in the 1720’s for himself and his family. The individual rooms of the palace refer to the original purpose of the space, used for representation, invigorating the soul, amusement and delight for the eyes. The objects created by glass artists gradually filled the various rooms entitled the Chapel, the Banquet Hall, the Marble Hall, the Landscape, the Study and the Theatre. The exhibition contains modern and contemporary artistic glass from the collections of Kampa Museum, Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague as well as from private collectors and the artists themselves. It points

Altogether there are some 170 items of different colours, shapes and themes on display. The exhibition was conceived in a completely different way than it is common in museums and galleries. Visitors at the Portheimka Glass Museum will get a unique experience combining Baroque architecture with the beauty of glass. The impression is the main thing. Their creator has won various awards and has been invited to attend prestigious exhibitions but also various creative activities, including futuristic experiments. Admirers of her creations are fascinated by the flawlessness and fragile beauty of her dreamy metaphorical objects. Nonetheless, Karen LaMonte did not get trapped in one expressive artistic manner and keeps searching continuously for new forms of expression. Her talent, artistic sensitivity, intuition, tenacious strong-mindedness and, last but not least, her assiduousness are principles, that enable Karen LaMonte to become one of the most renowned figures of contemporary glass art.

29 June – 4 November 2018 Along with the opening of a permanent exhibition of Portheimka Glass Museum, there was a launch of a short exhibition of a phenomenal American artist Karen LaMonte: Clothed in Light. Among other things, the exhibition showcases a selection of fascinating crystal dresses, which made the artist, living and working in the Czech Republic, known around the whole world. The fantastic story of the American artist Karen LaMonte began already during her studies in the U.S., when she started to think conceptually about the forms of corporeality and the physical body and about the role of women int he world. She then projected her stimuli and experiences into the glass material. Thanks to the Fulbright Fellowship, she was able to study in the studio of Professor Vladimír Kopecký at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. At the time, she pursued her ideas of manufacturing three-dimensional life-size dress made of crystal. To many, it seemed a trivial idea without a deeper meaning. She used a technology that turned out to be crucial for her idea: melting glass into a mold, i.e. a method that had been developed and made famous worldwide by the artistic couple Professor Stanislav Libenský (1921–2002) and Jaroslava Brychtová (*1924). The experience of glassmakers from the North Bohemian town of Železný Brod turned out to be another turning point in the course of events. Thanks to this place, the Czech Republic has become not only Karen LaMonte’s second home but literally her destiny. The subsequent international

The exhibition and spatial video installation of Josef Koudelka and his work and the archival footage by film director Jan Němec are displayed on the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of the invasion; they are based on the eponymous book, which has been published in twelve languages.

22 August 2018 – 6 January 2019 Trade Fair Palace, 5 th floor, Prague 7 Josef Koudelka (born 10 January 1938) is a Czech– French photographer. He is one of the most significant photographers of the 20 th century. He became famous through his photos of the invasion of the Warsaw Pact forces in Prague, in 1968. The negatives were smuggled across the border and the photos were published anonymously in The Sunday Times, and, in 1969, they earned him the Robert Capa Gold Medal Award. In the 1970s and 80s he traveled around Europe, continuing with his work as a photographer. His pilot projects include Gypsies (1975) and Exiles (1988). He is a member of the celebrated group of photographers Magnum Photos. In the last years he has focused mostly on portraying European landscapes. The photographs Invasion 1968 by Josef Koudelka captured the incursion of the Warsaw Pact troops into Prague, a sudden catastrophe that had a major impact on the fate of the Czechoslovak people of the time. Although he had never engaged in reportages, the pictures he took during several dramatic days in August have become a symbol of the national tragedy and, more broadly, of any military oppression and fight for freedom, and have entered the canon of classic

Bonjour, Monsieur Gauguin: Czech Artists in Brittany 1850–1950

The exhibition will provide details about the presence of Czech artists in Brittany between 1850 and 1950, and evaluate how they depicted its rough landscape or traditional motifs and the influence of the PontAven school on their work or its unique character.

Works by Czech artists, among others Jaroslav Čermák, Antonín Chitussi, Alfons Mucha, Josef Čapek, František Kupka, Jan Zrzavý, Alén Diviš, Toyen, Jan Křížek will be presented and compared to paintings by foreign artists, such as Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier and Emil Bernard. The National Gallery in Prague is preparing a retrospective of world-famous Czech painter and graphic artist František Kupka (1871–1957) in collaboration with the French Réunion de musées nationaux – Grand Calais, the Centre Pompidou and Ateneum Art Museum/Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki, Finland. The exhibition will show Kupka’s entire oeuvre, from his early works of the 1890s to his abstract artworks of the 1950s. Thanks to the French partner, a unique collection of oil paintings, works on paper, prints and documentary material could be assembled to be presented in the Grand Palais in Paris, in the spring of 2018, then in the National Gallery in Prague, in the autumn of 2018 (in an altered form), and at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki, in the spring of 2019. The Prague exhibition will show artworks from the National Gallery in Prague as well as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Albertina Museum in Vienna. The chronological exhibition will be divided by theme to allow the viewer to follow the artist’s path from symbolism to abstraction (of which Kupka was an originator), but also the transformation of the society and the major themes of his time. The retrospective will focus on Kupka’s symbolist paintings, first expressionist portraits, path to abstract art, colour verticals, vocabulary of forms and colours, machinism and geometric abstraction. The many artworks on paper will show Kupka as a satirical draughtsman and brilliant illustrator, an artist interested in philosophy, Greek and Roman art, religion and science.

NATIONAL THEATRE National Theatre Libuše

symbolically exceeded the narrow world of Czech theatre, became one of the fundamental precursors of the independence of 1918. This year’s 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic is an important moment also for the National Theatre and the new staging of Libuše is its obvious contribution to this celebration.

Bedřich Smetana Première: 14 and 16 September 2018 National Theatre in Prague Libuše is a festive opera from 1872 by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana inspired by the story of the mythical Czech princess Libuše, the founder of the Přemysl dynasty. The legend, Lubossa, was first put down in writing in the early 12 th century in the Kosmas chronicle, and different versions of it have appeared in other Czech works of literature.

Libuše can be characterised by several genres, and one of them could be a “scenic ritual of reconciliation and cleansing”. The conflicts of Smetana’s opera are centred around the main character, Princess Libuše, who isn’t only a legendary ruler and prophetess of Czech glory, but mainly a symbol of mythical cleansing.

The question of whether Libuše is a masterpiece of Bedřich Smetana when compared to his other operas, or even to other Czech operas, and whether it holds its own against The Bartered Bride, or the lyrics and emotionality of Dvořák’s Rusalka and the drama of Janáček’s operas is not worth considering a priori. Smetana wrote Libuše to be performed on festive occasions related to the life of Czech society. Kylián – The Bridges of Time

The Czech National Ballet has prepared the gala première of a project titled KYLIÁN as part of the celebrations of the 100 th anniversary of the Republic. This project not only dignifies this important anniversary, but also pays tribute to a famous Czech native, Jiří Kylián, a true icon of global dance. The evening will present the audience with four works: Symphony of Psalms, Bella Figura, Petite Mort and Six Dances.

In the 1970s, he studied at the Prague Dance Conservatory and at the Royal Ballet School in London. He has worked many years with the Stuttgart Ballet and the Nederlands Dans Theater in The Hague and has received many important awards such as Hans Christian Andersen Ballet Award, Officier de l’Ordre “Pour les arts et lettres”, Price of the Dutch Theatre, Decoration of the Royal Dutch order of Oranje-Nassau, among others.

TGM AND THE ART COLLECTION FOR PRAGUE CASTLE 14 September – 9 December 2018 Imperial Stables daily 10 am–6 pm The exhibition will present the concept, the acquisitions and the fate of the collection bought for Prague Castle with the interests from the Masaryk National Fund between 1920 and 1952. Prague Castle, the seat of kings and presidents and a symbol of Czech statehood, concludes this year’s 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic with an exhibition of the collection of artworks that the first Czechoslovak President, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, selected and bought for its interiors. The exhibition in the Imperial Stables will present more than 100 paintings, but it will not be only about the famous names of the authors, but also about the stories of how these works helped create the image of Prague Castle as a symbol of the new democratic republic. The works were selected not only for their aesthetic aspect, but also following a certain ideology, one that corresponded with the time of the emergence of the new republic and the political goals of its leadership. Visitors will learn that, when it came to art, the conservative T. G. Masaryk chose mainly paintings of Czech authors from the 19 th century who already then – and still today – were part of the canon of the history of art (J. Mánes, M. Aleš, A. Slavíček). The exhibition will also look into the acquisitions of the second Czech President, Edvard Beneš, who didn’t hesitate to buy modern art. Jakub Schikaneder: Lost Guard Street All these paintings today adorn the representative and administrative rooms of Prague Castle and will be exhibited together for the first time ever, including the ones that created the public image of the Office of the President of the Republic, like the portraits of T. This exhibition, especially dedicated to the history of the Czech State Symbols, is quite exceptional among the series of exhibitions dedicated to the foundation of the independent an Czechoslovak state, and not only because of all the exhibits concentrated in one place, but also because of its architectural concept. The stories of the exhibited objects form an axis that aims to show visitors that, even though the Czech state symbols were misused throughout the country’s history, they still represented something our ancestors were willing to give their lives for. The exhibition will include a case showing the highest state decorations awarded in the last 100 years as well as unique archives linked to critical moments of modern Czech history. (see p. 3)

THE PRAGUE CASTLE GUARD Theresian Wing of the Old Royal Palace 28 June – 31 October 2018

The birth of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 is inseparably linked to the establishment of the Castle Guard. This military unit was established after Prague Castle became the seat of the President of the new republic to provide external security and defense to both the castle complex and the buildings that serve as seat of the President and his guests, for example, the President’s Summer Residence at Château Lány. The unit is also in charge of military honours, especially during official visits of foreign dignitaries and the reception by the President of the heads of embassy missions. The Castle Guard wears a specific type of uniform designed in 1990 for then President Václav Havel by artist Theodor Pištěk, who won an Oscar for the costume design of Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus. The exhibition will show the Castle Guard’s one hundred year history through hundreds of photos and several 3D exhibits. (see p. 3)

St. George Convent

The St. George Convent was established in 973 by Prince Boleslav and his sister Mlada for the Benedictine order. It was dissolved in 1782, and reconstructed and newly opened in 1976. Open daily: 9 am to 5 pm (IV–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–III)

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5:00 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 30. Golden Lane

Golden lane features tiny houses from the 16th century, built into late Gothic fortifications.

Daliborka Tower

The fortified Daliborka Tower was built in 1496 by Benedikt Rejt as a part of the castle’s fortifications. It was converted into a jail until the end of the 18th century.

Mihulka Powder Tower

Loretto

Prague 1, Loretánské náměstí 7 Loretto was once a goal of pilgrims, with a copy of Santa Casa; it was built from 1626 to 1631. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of Our Lord was built in 1734–35. The front façade was rebuilt from 1720 to 1722 by K. I. Dienzenhofer. The tower houses 27 Loretto bells which play the melody of the Our Lady Chorus. The most valuable item is the liturgical treasury, with a diamond monstrance called Prague Sun; it weighs over 12 kg and is adorned with more than 6,000 diamonds. St. George Basilica

The Romanesque St. George Basilica was built in 920, close to the Benedictine monastery; it was reconstructed in the 10th and 12th centuries.

Royal Summer Palace (Belvedere)

This is the most remarkable Renaissance building in Prague. It was built from 1538–1552 following the design of Paolo della Stella, and completed in 1563 by the architect B. Wohlmut. Its garden contains the Singing Fountain, where drops of water

The Royal Garden was laid out in 1534 under the reign of Ferdinand I and refined under the rule of Rudolf II. The Ball Game Hall was once used as a barracks and is now used to house exhibitions. Open to the public only in the summer season (April to October), and the Ball Game Hall is open only for exhibitions.

During the first phase, the Ledebour and Small Pálffy Gardens underwent reconstruction. These gardens were opened to the public in June 1995. The second phase – finished in August 2000 – covers the three remaining gardens (the Great Pálffy Garden was opened in 1997). The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. It was not until 1989 that reconstruction commenced, led by the new owner – the State Preservation Institute. The reconstruction

It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Despite several reconstructions that followed, the original Baroque design remained preserved; namely, the terrace-like setting, the axis location of the central stairs, the alteration of vacant and planted sections and many remarkable architectural motifs, including many wellpreserved relics of art decoration, etc. Unlike other decorative and entertainment gardens, the Kolowrat Garden has a four purpose character. Its concept is much more modest and far less demonstrative. Also, where the Small Fürstenberg Garden is located, there used to be a vineyard and a utility garden in 1517. Ledebour Garden is a Baroque, terrace garden from the first third of the 18 century, in about 1787 styled most probably by I. J. Palliardi. In between the salla terrena and the opposite–side wall, flat with the staircase and the fountain with the statue of a giant, a parterre with a recently-built basin. Malostranské nám. 556/29 The construction of this church started in 1704 on the site of a small, older Gothic church. The frontispiece was finished in 1710 and the nave, with its wreath of chapels, was consecrated in 1711. This part was clearly built by Christopher Dienzenhofer. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. The Petřín Observation Tower

The construction of the Petřín observation tower was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club on the occasion of the Jubilee Land’s Exhibition. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It

form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. weighs about 168 tons and the base of the tower is formed by an octagon with a diameter of 20 m. The observation point is at a height of 50.98 m and you can get there climbing up 299 spiral stairs. The Petřín hill funicular railway

After its renewal in 1985, the Petřín hill funicular railway (lanovka) was integrated into Prague’s public transportation system. You may transfer onto it at the Újezd tram stop – it takes you up to Nebozízek and Petřín. Church of Our Lady before Týn

(Staroměstské náměstí) The historical centre of the town, the place of the most significant events, a unique complex of architectural and historic memories. In the middle there is a monument of Master John Huss by Ladislav Šaloun.

After St. Vitus Cathedral it is the most remarkable Prague Gothic church with Baroque interior. In the church there is the tomb of Danish astrologer Tycho Brahe. Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–1 pm and 3 pm–5 pm ❼ 10 am –noon. Visits of groups are possible with reservations. Admission: 25 CZK

The Old-Town Hall with the Astronomical Clock (horologe)

House At the Stone Bell

The Town Hall was built in 1338, in 1364 adjoining the tower with the chapel, in 1470 the Town Hall was reshaped in the late Gothic style. The horologe (orloj) is from the beginning of the 15 century; in the upper part every hour (9 am–11 pm) the procession of the 12 apostles in succession appears at the window. (Under reconstruction till August, 2018)

The most precious burgess house of medieaval age, originally Romanesque, whose rare Gothic form and two-storey front face of 14 century was renovated in 1988. Currently it serves as an exhibition hall (City Gallery Prague). Open: ❷–❻ 10 am–8 pm

The National Theatre

New Town City Hall

Prague 1, Národní 2 Neo-Renaissance building of 1868 to 1881 built according to plans of J. Zítek. In 1881 the finished theatre burnt, and was reconstructed by architect Josef Schulz in 1883.

Prague 2, Karlovo náměstí 23 A complex of Gothic buildings from the turn of the 14th and the 15th centuries, reconstructed in the Renaissance style during the years 1520–1526. They include a tower with the Holy Virgin Chapel, two Gothic Halls and a Renaissance Hall. Here was the seat of the Administration Offices of the New Town of Prague from 1377 to 1784. The defenestration of Catholic city councellors by Prague Hussites occurred here on July 30, 1419. The Tower is open for tourists daily except Mondays from 10 am–6 pm (March, 23 – November), halls can be visited while exhibitions are held there. Admission (the Tower): 60/40/130 CZK

Emmaus

Prague 2, Vyšehradská 49 The Emmaus Monastery was founded by Charles IV in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines with the Church of Our Lady and Slavonic patrons. At the end of World War II it was burnt by bombing. Two asymmetrical spires were finished in 1967. “Slavin”, the final resting-place of the most significant personalities of the Czech nation. Slavín was built between 1889 and 1893. Above the central memorial at Slavín is a sarcophagus with an allegorical winged statue the Genius Patriae. The motto of the Slavín cemetery is engraved above the name plates: Though dead, they still speak. To date, more than 600 personalities from the world of Czech culture and education are buried here. They include, for example, the composers Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, the painter Alfons Mucha, the opera singer Ema Destinnová, the writer Karel Čapek, the Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský and many others. The Slavín-Cemetery is open daily: 8 a.m.–6 p.m (III, IV, X), 8 a.m.–7 p.m. (V–IX), 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (XI–II)

Vyšehrad

Prague 2, V Pevnosti 159/5 On a rock over the River Vltava, this is the oldest seat of the Přemyslid princes. The most ancient building in Vyšehrad is the rotunda of St. Martin. In the vicinity of St. Peter and Paul’s Church is the residence of canons, casemates, a park, and a cemetery with the tombs of famous representatives of Czech culture (Slavín). Buses link the capital city not only with individual parts of the Czech Republic but also with all of Europe. Regular lines run to all the significant places in the European Union as well as outside of it. The most important bus depot is the Florence Central Bus Station, which is located in the very centre of the city.

The tickets are available at some Underground stations, at Transport Inquiries, at shops selling newspapers and cigarettes (with inscription Tabák), at some groceries, reception desks, travel services, yellow vending machines by the transport means stations. All lines of the underground operate from 5.00 am till midnight. Tram and bus timetables are placed at all stops. Stickers are available at almost every petrol station or post office in the Czech Republic. Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) does not have its own selling points. When entering the Czech Republic on motorways D1 (from Poland near Bohumín), D2 (from Slovakia near Břeclav), D5 (from Germany near Rozvadov) and D8 (from Germany near Petrovice), the sticker can be bought on the first rest area after the border.

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ,” the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome,” with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint,” with remnants of a medieval secret money forging workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the so-called “Koněprusy rose.”

Karlštejn Castle was mitt in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the coronation jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged.

The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today.

This hunting chateau in the Baroque style, close to the east-Bohemian city of Sobotka, was built in the 2nd half of the 17th century as a likeness of the Galata Tower in Istanbul, constructed on an elliptical ground plan. Such an architectural layout is very unusual in the Czech lands. A Czech aristocrat, the baroque period nobleman Humprecht Černín of Chudenice, commissioned it to an Italian architect, Carlo Lurago, for the castle was supposed to meet the tastes of his Italian spouse. The Černín family visited the chateau for hunting and relaxation purposes. The observatory gallery offers a great view of Bohemian Paradise region; in nice weather you can also see distant Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) and Jizerské hory (Izera Mountains).

Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre,you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. From Adlof Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. Visitors can peek in the Telč undergrounds in their “raw” condition that continues along the entire square. They can also enter the renovated rooms, where modern projection technology present the city of Telč and its surroundings, as well important points of the history of its development.

The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe.The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden.

There are fountains among the colourful flowerbeds and green labyrinths, and the very centre of the garden is dominated by a rotunda with unique artistic decorations and a unique Foucault pendulum. One of the most attractive parts of the Flower garden is a 244-metre-long colonnade with statues of ancient gods and other historical figures of antiquity. The construction according to the design by Giovanni PietroTencalla was completed in 1671.

BAROQUE PEARL ON GREEN HILL

Olomouc is one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe, the pearl of Moravia, and the most beautiful city in the Czech Republic and a “hidden treasure of Europe”, according Lonely Planet. There you can find breathtaking baroque churches, beautiful palaces, charming stone-paved lanes, flowers and green areas. Next to Prague, it is the city with the highest concentration of marvelous landmarks in the Czech Republic. Olomouc also boasts several European rarities, the largest baroque statuary – the Holy Trinity Column, a significant UNESCO landmark. Žďár nad Sázavou lies in the beautiful countryside of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Area. The village emerged along the Cistercian Monastery founded in 1252, and was promoted to city in 1607. Today’s dynamic city is a modern center of the region, and – thanks of the magnificent nearby UNESCO landmark – an ever more popular tourist destination, and a gateway to the most beautiful part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands Region. The St. Johannus Nepomuceni pilgrimage church on Green Hill (Zelená hora) is a state-of-the-art work in the Bohemian baroque Gothic. Its extraordinary value was rewarded with its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was built between 1719 and 1722 by one of the greatest Bohemian baroque architects, Jan Blažej Santini Aichel. The ambit surrounding the temple was built on a decagonal pattern while the temple itself has the shape of a pentagram. The entire complex has five entrances, inside the temple there are five chapels and five altars. On top of the cupola there is a big tongue, the attribute of St. Johannus Nepomuceni. The entire structure combines two architectonic styles: Gothic and baroque. The main altar features a saint, standing on a globe, optically rising up. On the globe you can find the five octagonal Cistercian stars, representing the five continents where Christianity has spread.

KARLŠTEJN The castle was founded in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV as place to store the royal treasure, in particular the collection of holy relics and the Imperial Crown Jewels. The Chapel of the Holy Cross has 129 plate paintings from the 14 th century created by Master Theodorik.

KUTNÁ HORA Kutná Hora is an urban heritage reserve and the only town the region with UNESCO status. The biggest attractions are the Church of All Saints (the Ossuary), the St. Barbara Cathedral (UNESCO), the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist in Sedlec (UNESCO), the Czech Museum of Silver and the Italian Court.

PRŮHONICE PARK AND CHÂTEAU The significance of the château and its park is evidenced by its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. An inseparable part of the Neo-Renaissance Château is the 250 ha park with a great collection of local and foreign plants and habitats.

KONOPIŠTĚ CASTLE It was founded around 1294, probably by the Bishop of Prague Tobias of Benešov, not far from the seat of his family, and in 1887 it was acquired by Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, who had it refurbished in a historicist style and its surroundings turned into a landscaped park. He also built a rose garden with a conservatory and brought in his extensive collection of hunting trophies and weapons.

KOKOŘÍN PROTECTED AREA The diverse shapes of the sandstone formations, with valleys of deep forest, wetlands in the river banks and a unique fauna and flora are typical of Kokořín. Some of the most famous formations are Pokličky (the Lids), the Nedamy rock settlement or the Devil’s head and caves. But the dominant is castle Kokořín. You can also visit the “Hell’s Gate” – the nickname of the mysterious Houska castle.

SKANZEN VYSOKÝ CHLUMEC Take a trip to the nineteenth century, to the open air – museum of the Central Moldava Basin, where you’ll see farmhouses and cottages, technical buildings and small chapels. This aren’t replicas! The buildings were dismantled and brought to the museum from nearby towns.

SÁZAVA MONASTERY AND FRANTIŠEK GLASSWORKS Founded in the 11 th century, the Sázava Monastery is today the third oldest male cloister in Czechia and one of the country’s most impressive places of pilgrimage. Come and enjoy the atmosphere of a place blessed with the work, prayers and miracles of St. Procopius. The renovated František Glassworks in Sázava houses the Glass Art Centre with a unique collection of modern crystal.

MĚLNÍK A city located at the confluence of the Moldava and Elbe, famous for its vineyards and its traditional vintage festival. Visit the local observation tower, the catacombs, the exhibition of the château or one of the most interesting ossuaries in the Czech Republic.

KUTNÁHORA Kutná Hora is one of the most famous Czech towns. The riches from the silver mines made it the second most important city in Bohemia, after Prague; its two Gothic cathedrals – the St. Barbara’s Cathedral, and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec – are the best proof of that. Both these extraordinary landmarks, along with the historical city center, are included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

In Kutná Hora you can also find the famous Ossuary, an underground chapel of the All Saints Church decorated solely with human bones. Do not miss a visit to the former Royal Mint, the seat of Bohemian kings in the Italian Court, and the Unveiling of the Mysterious Face of Kutná Hora Museum, where you can learn about the criminal history of the city. “Hrádek” (Little Castle), one of the most famous burghers’ houses in Kutná Hora, is today the home of the Czech Museum of Silver, with exhibitions on silver mining. The museum regularly appears on leading positions of TripAdvisor travelers’ surveys and received the Certificate of Excellence in 2015. The museum also offers a tour through an original medieval silver mine, the St. George drift. Visitors are equipped with medieval mining gear, a helmet and a torch. The drift is 35 meters deep, and 250 meters long. During the tour, visitors also pass by rooms filled with crystal clear water. (Open: April – November) Art lovers should not miss the 2nd largest gallery in the Czech Republic, the GASK Gallery situated next to the St. Barbara’s Cathedral in the Jesuit college.

ATREASURY OFHISTORY If you like historical and technical monuments, do not forget to visit Kolín. You won’t regret it! Kolín lives and breathes history. It’s a town with a unique atmosphere, where history blends with industrial tradition.

Historical Centre Karlovo náměstí (Charles Square) has always been the heart of the historical and present Kolín, and the Town Hall has been its most important building since the middle ages, though its current Neo-Renaissance appearance is the result of a renovation in 1887–89. In the centre of the square are the fascinating Neoclassical fountain and the Baroque Marian Column from 1682 m, but the dominant and most valuable monument is the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, an extraordinary piece of early Gothic architecture founded in the mid 13 th century by Czech King Přemysl Otakar II. Its choir was built between 1360 and 1378 by architect Peter Parler, one of the most prominent artists of the High Gothic, who took part in the construction of the cathedrals in Cologne and Strasbourg, and later worked mostly in Bohemia, in charge of important projects of Emperor Charles IV, such as St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral houses many valuable art works. Every year, for the last 55 years, the historical centre of Kolín and its monuments become alive with music. They become the stage of one of the most important cultural events in the Central Bohemia Region, the traditional international brass music festival Kmochův Kolín, named after the famous Czech composer and bandmaster František Kmoch.

Jerusalem on the Elbe – the Jewish gems of Kolín The former Jewish quarter is one of the most precious monuments of its kind in the Czech lands. The Jews settled in Kolín shortly after the founding of the city. It is estimated that, at it most prosperous, the Jewish community made up to ¼ of the city’s population. The city has preserved part of the Jewish Ghetto, with a synagogue and two cemeteries. The Kolín Synagogue is one of the oldest and most valuable in the country and served its purpose until the demise of the Jewish community in 1953. The old Jewish cemetery, one of the oldest in Czechia, was used until 1887 and has almost 2700 tombstones. MINING MUSEUM PŘÍBRAM

The Mining Museum in the Central Bohemian town of Příbram is a place where learning goes hand in hand with experience and where both adults and children have fun and learn something new. The Příbram Mining Museum, a National Cultural Heritage site, is one of the oldest museums in the Czech Republic. Since its establishment in 1886, it has focused its attention on collecting items related to mining and metallurgy. Regarding the number of visitor routes, it is one of the largest mining museums not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Europe.

Adventure journey through historical mining works Visitors can take a mining train tour of the Anna Mine opened in 1789, leading along the 260 metre-long Prokop Shaft. It reaches a depth of 1600 metres, which makes it the third deepest shaft in the Czech Republic. In the Wasserlauf shaft visitors can see historical underground works built between the 17 th and 19 th century. They can also get a first hand experience with going down the put or with historical hand mining. In the Drkolnov mine they can admire a unique water wheel, with a diameter of 12,4 metres.

Fun and educational activities above the ground Exhibitions places in the original operating and office buildings are devoted to the history of local mining. On display are valuable mineral specimens, including an 11-kilogramme piece of extracted silver, the largest one in Czech musems’ collections. There are also monumental steam mining machines and other unique objects. Visitors can also enjoy the view of the beautiful industrial architecture, see an-open-air exhibition of mining machinery or try their luck in searching for minerals on the spoil heap. People interested in mining folklore will be happy to see the original mining cottage with foundations dating to the 17 th century or some of the many cultural events, which the Mining Museum in Příbram organizes every year.

OREMOUNTAINS IN WINTER AND SUMMER All that skiers long for: Plenty of snow, beautiful tracks, countless cross-country routes. Did you know that the most elevated city in Germany lies in the Ore Mountains? This record belongs to the spa town Oberwiesenthal, located at the feet of the Fichtelberg Mountain. Exactly opposite Fichtelberg, is the Klínovec Mountain; with its 1244 meters above sea level it is the highest summit of the Ore Mountains. There you can find the longest pistes in the region, and numerous cableways and ski lifts for skiers. Winter sports enthusiasts appreciate the diverse terrain of the pistes and groomed cross-country routes, as well as U-ramp and snowkiting. The Klíny sports complex at the feet of Šumný důl offers, along with a new cableway, a true specialty: a snowpark designed by professional snowboarders, with a unique BigAir summer facility. The Ore Mountains invites cross-country skiers to its 250 kilometers of groomed tracks. The entire Ore Mountains region offers some 1,000 kilometers of marked cross-country routes.

But holidays for skiers in Ore Mountains offer much more. After a busy day you can relax your body and soul. There are plenty of ways: from a sauna in your cozy hotel, to the services of the nearby spa town Jáchymov. As soon as the snow melts, the Ore Mountains turn to a cycling and hiking paradise. The Ore Mountains central trail and numerous other hiking and cycling routes take you through the forests along quiet roads. Without loosing elevation, you can cross the entire mountain ridge from Petrovice all the way to Klínovec. The climbs are very mild. If you prefer mountain biking, the trails on the ridge take you to picturesque locations and to places with unworn views. If you get hungry along the way, you can stop by some of the little pubs and restaurants offering various specialties.
