30 YEARS SINCE THE VELVET REVOLUTION Last year, the Czech Republic celebrated 100 years since the establishment of an independent State and this year brings another, very important anniversary: 30 years since the Velvet Revolution. Such is the name of the period of profound political changes in then Czechoslovakia, which, in 1989, lead to the fall of the Communist regime and its transformation into a pluralist democracy, without any violence. Both anniversaries meant the beginning of a new, or renewed, direction towards democracy, freedom and prosperity. Thirty years ago, the Iron Curtain that separated the East from the West fell and the Czech Republic opened itself to the world like a blooming flower. And the world looked with interests at this small country in the middle of Europe, whose president was dissident, writer and playwright Václav Havel, the charismatic icon of the Velvet Revolution. While State representatives from all over the world flowed to the resurgent country, and Havel himself tirelessly explained its new direction to both hemispheres, earning international respect, the country was becoming a destination for thousands of visitors from every corner of the planet, who wanted to see with their own eyes what, up until then, had remained pretty much hidden. And, even though the country was barely awaking from four decades of totalitarianism, there was plenty to look at. The previous generations had set values – which Czechs can still be proud of today – that were now allowed to develop further; in architecture, design, arts or music, but also in commerce and industry. The heritage of a nation began now to see once again the light. Towns and villages flourished, monuments recovered their old splendour and people gradually began to learn how to live and do business with freedom. But what are tourists attracted to? In particular, Prague, which became known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world; fascinating, a little mysterious, and addictive. The twelve historical monuments included in the UNESCO World Heritage List have also been the centre of much attention. But not only that. There are also many historical and technical monuments, castles, châteaux, churches, and urban heritage reserves, plus the natural beauty of mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes and ponds that create a charming, picturesque and hospitable landscape for sports, or just relax. In addition, the diverse cultural traditions offer wonderful experiences in music, art, dance and folklore, while traditional gastronomy tempts with many regional delicacies and great beer, a synonym of quality all over the world. As a member of the European Union, the Czech Republic is today one of the safest countries for visitors. And despite the many historical events that have left their mark in the national identity and the fates of the people, the real values have remained. Come to find their many traces and know them. 5

Smetana’s Litomyšl is the second oldest music festival in the Czech Republic and one of the largest regularly held festivals of classical music. All opera lovers can enjoy the new production of the opera Dalibor, The Elixir of Love, by G. Donizetti, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Lady Macbeth of The Mtsensk District, by D. Shostakovich, Puccini’s Triptych or the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, by A. L. Webber. Toronto Theaturtle plays Charlotte – a chamber opera musical by Czech composer Aleš Březina. A gala concert of one of the greatest stars of today’s opera scene, Olga Peretyatko. Concerts by the choir of little Roma singers Chavorenge, with its founder, Ida Kelarova, and musicians from the Czech Philharmonic. Free follow-up on an exceptionally successful programme, which once more brings together the string sections of three philharmonic orchestras and The grand finale of the 61 st Smetana’s Litomyšl is symbolically made up of favourite works for special events, solemn ceremonies, films and sporting occasions. www.smetanovalitomysl.cz

Colours of Ostrava 2019 – multi-genre international music festival 17 – 20 July 2019, Ostrava – Vítkovice One of the biggest summer festivals in Czech Republic – this year with The Cure (UK). Colours of Ostrava has been an international music festival since 2002, and in 2012 it was moved to the entrancing surroundings of Dolní Vítkovice – an area that used to belong to metallurgical works, mines and ironworks. More than 120 bands of all kinds, on 21 open and covered stages, and a program with more than 350 events – concerts, talks, theatre performances, films, workshops as well as art activities. In 2015, the festival made it to the Best Major Festivals shortlist of the European Festival Awards, and in 2016 the Guardian rated it as one of the 10 best in Europe. This year’s edition features Florence + The Machine, Rag’n’Bone Man, ZAZ, Mogwai, Mariza, John Butler Trio, Rosalía, Gang of Youths etc. www.colours.cz

International Music Festival Český Krumlov 19 July – 10 August 2019, Český Krumlov Experience the combination of beautiful melodies with the magical atmosphere of Český Krumlov during the 28 th edition of the IMF Český Krumlov 2019! MOTOGP – Czech Grand Prix 2 – 4 August 2019, Brno, Masaryk Circuit The Czech Republic Motorcycle Grand Prix has been part of the World Championship since 1965. It takes place annually on the Masaryk Circuit, built in 1930, in a rangy and wooded terrain, which was extended to its current length of 5.5 km in 1987. Tens of thousands of visitors come to Brno to see the popular race. The Masaryk Circuit also hosts automobile and karts races and antique cars parades. On a regular basis, it opens its gates to those who want to drive their own cars, motorcycles, in-line skates or bicycles.

The historical vintage festival 13 – 15 September 2019, South Moravia – Znojmo city Wine production dates back to the period of big Pannonia. In the 2 nd century AC, the Roman 10 th Legion based at Vindobona built an extensive outpost near the Amber Road and encouraged the planting of new vines in the northern Roman colonies. Wider expansion of wine production came together with the arrival of Christianity in the period of the Great Moravia Empire. During the 13 th century, monasteries helped to establish large vineyard areas. The biggest feast of wine will remind this tradition dating back to antiquity. You can feel the unique atmosphere of this medieval festival of wine. Every year the harvest attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Znojmo, who come not only for the wine and half-fermented wine “burčák”, but also for the excellent cultural program, which must always include the procession of king John of Luxembourg with wife, courtiers and hundreds of people in period costumes. In addition to works of art, the exhibition will feature extensive reviews of Czech Television, Radio Televisão de Portugal, the Václav Havel Library, Fundacão Soares and private archives. The large-scale research project will be accompanied by a trilingual publication.

Under the auspices of Mrs. Manuela Franco The Ambassador of Portugal in Prague The curatorial project highlights the surprising and hitherto unknown parallels of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, which took place on 25 April 1974, and the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia of 17 November 1989. It will present artists of the former Czechoslovakia who were of crucial importance for the formation of contemporary art in their diverse responses to the totalitarian regime – Adriena Šimotová, Eva Kmentová, Jiří Kovanda, Petr Štembera, Jan Mlčoch, Milan Knížák, Jiří Kolář, Václav Havel, Július Koller, Ľubomír Ďurček and many others. They will be juxtaposed with their Portuguese contemporaries, such as Helena Almeida, Lourdes Castro, Ana Vieira, Ana Hatherly, Fernando Calhau and Alberto Carneiro.

The exhibition offers a historical overview of art that depicts sound as an abstract phenomenon, from the beginnings of abstraction to the present day. Its main focus is to trace the most important trends in audio experimentation in the field of the visual arts, in the form of paintings or graphic scores as well as audio installations, acoustic objects, film, and multimedia projections. Through the selection of historical materials, the exhibiton aims to show how sound becomes an object or architecture, and what psychological as well as physical and mathematical factors determine its visual form. DVOŘÁK PRAGUE 2019 Dvořák Prague 2019 International Music Festival

A Dvořák première, legendary conductors and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – that is Dvořák Prague 2019 8 – 23 September, 2019

The 12 th season of the Dvořák Prague International Music Festival will again bring two weeks full of delightful music, star interpreters and extraordinary experiences. This year, the choice of the works of Antonín Dvořák highlights his instrumental concertos and his early opera Král a uhlíř (King and Collier) will have its present-day première. The stars of the festival will include, among others, Zubin Mehta, Neeme Järvi and Christoph Eschenbach, and the audience can also look forward to solo performances by Ivo Pogorelich, the Capuçon brothers, Nicola Benedetti, Jiří Bárta and Gil Shaham, who has also assumed the role of the curator of the Chamber series. The Czech Philharmonic, the festival’s orchestra-in-residence, under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, will perform compositions of Dvořák’s friend Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, including the famous Piano concerto in B flat minor delivered by Kirill Gerstein. The festival opens on September 8, with Dvořák’s famous Violoncello Concerto in B minor and Symphony No. 8, known as “English”. The Symphony Orchestra of the Italian Radio and Television RAI Torino will perform under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, together with a rising star of the international stage, the cellist Kian Soltani. The legendary conductor Zubin Mehta has been associated with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra for a record-long period of 51 years. Their concert in Prague on 15 September will be one of his last in the role of chief conductor of this ensemble, where they will perform the monumental Third Symphony of Gustav Mahler. The Nestor of a dynasty of conductors, Neeme Järvi, will lead the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra

at the end of the festival, in a concert that will also feature violinist Nicola Benedetti. The list of this year’s prestigious ensembles also includes the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra with its chief conductor Tomáš Netopil, who will perform the technically and interpretatively demanding Piano Concerto in G minor together with Ivo Kahánek. This year, the Opera in Concert series will present a remarkable historical-documentary act and the present-day première of one of Dvořák’s works, a concert of the first musical setting of the opera King and Collier from 1871, which was heard for the first, and last, time in 1929. For almost a year, a team of enthusiasts from Wunderman, Komerční banka and PKF – Prague Philharmonia has been working on a bold experiment called From the Future World. 115 years after his death, the work of this enormous figure of Czech music, Antonín Dvořák, has been brought to life with the artificial intelligence known as AIVA. The story begins in the Czech Museum of Music, where, in the silence of the depository, a fragment of an incomplete composition by Dvořák, B 410, had been resting for decades… At the very beginning of the project there was passion for Dvořák’s music, curiosity and a desire to see how artificial intelligence can be used creatively and how far can its current capabilities go. But, as the creators themselves say, the goal was also to produce something that listeners will enjoy and that will inspire positive emotions. And that is the reason why the AI called AIVA was invited to collaborate. It’s the only AI in the world recognised as a composer by the author’s guild SACEM. AIVA has analysed 30 thousand compositions of authors from the Baroque to the 20 th century to learn the fundamentals of Classical Music composition. After this “training”, the authors of the project had the task to analyse in detail all the 115 Dvořák’s finished opuses and, on the basis of the resulting algorithm, to finish the incomplete fragment. AIVA was able to study Dvořák’s works in only one month and the result of the effort is a three-movement piece called From the Future World, opus 71. The first movement loosely follows Dvořák’s fragment. The other two are already an original work by AIVA, in the style of Antonín Dvořák.

The exhibition Možnosti dialogu /Dimensions of Dialogue/ Möglichkeiten des Dialogs is the outcome of a collaboration between the National Gallery Prague and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. The exhibition assembles a selection of works from the Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and selected works of contemporary Czech artists from the collections of the National Gallery Prague and private collections. The goal of this joint project is to promote and foster dialogue between the two cities as well as between Eastern and Western artistic positions in the space of Central Europe. The dimensions of dialogue are set by the work of the same name by the Czech filmmaker Jan Švankmajer. The dialogue between works on display and the audience as well as among individual artworks, initiated by the present exhibition, extends to the accompany-

ing programme prepared by the respective educational departments of the two institutions and in cooperation with the docents from the Sammlung Hoffmann Berlin. The programme builds upon the visionary interactive concept of the Sammlung Hoffmann Berlin, whose method involves “docents”, a group of guides of a half-art historical or half-scientific and halfartistic training, who seek to engage in dialogue with the visitors. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery Prague, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Sammlung Hoffmann Berlin.

specific moments in the history of Saxon-Bohemian relations and offer a special aesthetic experience. It will include Gothic and Renaissance art (e.g. paintings by Lucas Cranach), masterpieces in the mannerist style, paintings by Oskar Kokoschka or a model of Quo vadis, the well-known sculpture by David Černý. His statue of the Trabant car on four human legs is a typical reminder of the events in autumn 1989, when the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Prague became a temporary asylum shelter for East German citizens. This event can be seen as a symbolic turning point in the long history of relations between Saxony and Bohemia.

The cultural legacy of the Saxon-Bohemian border corroborates the lively and multilayered relations, mutual enrichment and links between the two regions. The exhibition seeks to present this multilayered and dynamic history of mutual relations à la longue durée, i.e. from the Stone Age to the present. The project is a result of the cooperation between the Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz and the National Gallery Prague. In a symbiosis of art and history, the exhibition, divided into nine parts, focuses on the day-to-day and economic life as well as historical events in the ruling stratum. The display in Prague will show unique artworks, many of which will be displayed for the first time in Bohemia. The selected artefacts will detail

29 June – 13 October 2019 Kinsky Palace, Prague 1 Monet “is nothing but an eye – but what an eye!”. That is how Paul Cézanne appreciated his colleague Claude Monet, who sought to capture an immediate impression in a given moment in his paintings. For him and other Impressionists, a personal experience from the nature or city and plein-air painting were important. The artworks full of light and colour presented in the exhibition are a unique collection of French art from the Ordrupgaard Museumin Denmark. The display especially shows Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley or Camille

The outstanding works from the collection of sixty paintings also include chef d’oeuvres by post-Impressionists Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. This exhibition is organized by the National Gallery Prague in collaboration with Ordrupgaard, Copenhagen.

Eva Jiřičná (1939) is the world’s most renowned architect of Czech origin. She has two studios, one in London and the other, AI Design, in Prague, and has received the award Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She is also a member of Royal Academy of Arts, and is one of the only 200 designers awarded with the Royal Design for Industry, the highest honour to be obtained in the UK. She gives shape to the interiors of family homes and also designs public buildings of various purposes, among which we can find a library, a hotel, a conference centre and a transport terminal. The exhibition will also present the famous monumental glass staircase originally designed in 1994 for the Parisian branch of the Joan & David store chain, the first to use glass as a structural element, with a design that has elevated it to sculpture.

MUSEUM KAMPA Museum Kampa I, Naděžda Plíšková 31 May – 18 August 2019 Naděžda Plíšková (1934–1999) was one of the most notable artists of the after-war period in Czechoslovakia. Her preferred area of creation were mostly large-scale graphic prints and objects, at first influenced by surrealism, later by pop-art and new realism, whose form she transformed into a specific penmanship (pencil) copy, typical for its simplicity and abbreviation. Her work is particular for its reflection of the social context in the form critiques of gender and consumer society, with regard of its time of creation. Plíšková has demonstrated the issues by way of irony, in connection with her own position as an artist, a mother, a wife and a housekeeper, giving her work a character of selfportrait. This exhibition shows the auhor’s work from the end of 1960’s up to the 1980’s in the context of her poetry.

To date, the National Theatre has staged 13 adaptations of Swan Lake, which have been choreographed by very renowned figures, like Remislav Remislavsky, Elizaveta Nikolska, Marius Petipa, and Kenneth Greve. The new Czech National Ballet production will be a revival of the immortal story’s version created by the world-renowned choreographer John Cranko, the founder of the Stuttgarter Ballett, shortly before his premature death. His aim was to render a Romantic atmosphere and to incorporate into his piece both the splendour of concept and a certain domesticity.

Swan Lake is one of the most feted classical ballet titles, with its productions being among the most frequently staged and attracting the highest numbers of dance lovers. The National Theatre in Prague, in particular, has historically been closely related to the piece, as well as its creator, P. I. Tchaikovsky. Bedřich Smetana Première: 27 and 29 June 2019 National Theatre in Prague

One of the first productions beyond Bohemia was the 1897 staging in Vienna, conducted by Gustav Mahler, an ardent champion of Smetana’s music. Dalibor is a romantic tragedy, with passions being the main driving force, first Dalibor’s wild desire to avenge the death of his close friend and Milada’s endeavour to avenge the death of her brother. Their spite is replaced by mad love for each other, which, is thwarted by the forces Dalibor had initially set in motion against himself.

Bedřich Smetana’s third opera is closely connected with the history of the National Theatre. The former received its premiere on 16 May 1868 at the New Town Theatre in Prague, within the celebrations of the laying of the foundation stone of the National Theatre. Libuše was first performed during the National Theatre’s gala opening in 1881, and again in 1883. At the time of composing Dalibor, Smetana was a major Czech opera figure. The story of the knight Dalibor reflects the historical events during the rule of Vladislav II, King of Bohemia (15 th century), yet the plot is rather centred around a romantic legend of a knight who in jail learns how to play the violin. The myth, treated by a number of chroniclers and authors, served as the basis for Wenzig’s libretto. Initially, Dalibor was not received overly positively and met with a lukewarm response on the part of the audience. 1989 THE FALL OF THE IRON CURTAIN Royal Summer Palace and adjacent Royal garden 31 May – 30 November 2019 The exhibition “1989 – The Fall of the Iron Curtain” at Prague Castle’s Royal Summer Palace and adjacent garden is an extensive showcase of photos from 1989, a crucial year in Central Europe. Seventy Czech and Slovak photographers, along with several foreign authors, provide an authentic testimony of the events that took place 30 years ago in the countries of the Socialist Block, whose histories began to move towards democracy and freedom. The authors of this unique exhibition include names like Jindřich Štreit, Viktor Kolář, Vladimír Birgus, Pavel Štecha, Herbert Slavík, Jan Šilpoch, Karol Kállay, Andrej Bán, Dana Kyndrová, Miroslav Zajíc, and Jaroslav Kučera, among others. The exhibition will remind witnesses of the emotional moments they saw with their own eyes and will bring the younger generation closer to those dramatic events, in a way sober history textbooks could never achieve.

KING OF BOHEMIA AND HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR WENCESLAUS IV THE BEAUTY OF GOTHIC ART AROUND 1400 Imperial Stables 16 August – 3 November 2019 The main cultural event of the 2019 season at Prague Castle is an exhibition dedicated to the King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Wenceslaus IV and the art of his era. He was son of Charles IV and brother of Sigismund of Luxembourg, and this year we commemorate 600 years since his untimely death. Wenceslaus IV (1361–1419) ruled in an era marked by the preaching of Czech Church reformer Jan Hus (1369–1415) and his burning at the stake in Constance, followed by the Papal Schism and the Plague. The project is closely related to the history of Prague Castle, which was Wenceslaus’s residence, where he’s still reminisced by the namesake hall in the Old Royal Palace. Prague Castle became a European centre of minucious court art characterised by the perception of the beauty and sensuality of life. Wenceslaus was an avid admirer of illuminated manuscripts and small art. The sculptures and paintings of his time are associated with the so-called Beautiful Style, an international trend in Gothic art from around 1400. The exhibition will showcase exquisite examples of applied art, sculpture and plate painting. The exhibits also include beautiful figurative stained-glass from Gothic windows and a set of funeral vestments from the collection of Prague Castle, one of the most important sets of medieval textiles in the world, as well as books and illuminated manuscripts.

The historical core of the capital of the Czech Republic was declared a Prague Monument Reserve in 1992 and is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. St. George Convent

The St. George Convent was established in 973 by Prince Boleslav and his sister Mlada for the Benedictine order. It was dissolved in 1782, and reconstructed and newly opened in 1976. Open daily: 9 am to 5 pm (IV–X), 9 am–4 pm (XI–III)

St. Vitus Cathedral

This Gothic Cathedral, which was built over nearly six centuries, was finally completed in 1929. In the 10th century a rotunda originally stood in its place. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1344 by Mathias Arras and Petr Parléř, who also built the St. Wenceslas Chapel, which is adorned with frescoes and semi-precious stones; in the catacombs underneath there are tombs of Czech kings.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000 m2. The site of the castle was established in the 9th century, and in the 12th century the Romanesque palace was built. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style, and the last reconstruction of the Royal Palace was carried out under the rule of the Jagellons at the end of the 15th century, At that time (1497 to 1500) the famous Vladislav Hall was built in the late Gothic style. The castle was enlarged in the 16th century following the great fire in 1541. After World War I, the interior and gardens of the castle were redesigned by the architect J. Plečnik. The castle is the seat of the president of the republic and the historical and political centre of the city and the state. The changing of the guards takes place at Prague Castle every hour on the hour from 5 am to 10 pm. The guard changes at noon are accompanied by a solemn fanfare. See the map on page 34. Golden Lane

Golden lane features tiny houses from the 16th century, built into late Gothic fortifications.

Daliborka Tower

The fortified Daliborka Tower was built in 1496 by Benedikt Rejt as a part of the castle’s fortifications. It was converted into a jail until the end of the 18 th century.

Mihulka Powder Tower

Loretto

Prague 1, Loretánské náměstí 7 Loretto was once a goal of pilgrims, with a copy of Santa Casa; it was built from 1626 to 1631. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of Our Lord was built in 1734–35. The front façade was rebuilt from 1720 to 1722 by K. I. Dienzenhofer. The tower houses 27 Loretto bells which play the melody of the Our Lady Chorus. The most valuable item is the liturgical treasury, with a diamond monstrance called Prague Sun; it weighs over 12 kg and is adorned with more than 6,000 diamonds. St. George Basilica

The Romanesque St. George Basilica was built in 920, close to the Benedictine monastery; it was reconstructed in the 12 th and 13 th centuries.

Royal Summer Palace (Belvedere)

Royal Garden with Ball Game Hall (Míčovna)

The Royal Garden was laid out in 1534 under the reign of Ferdinand I and refined under the rule of Rudolf II. The Ball Game Hall was once used as a barracks and is now used to house exhibitions. Open to the public only in the summer season (April to October), and the Ball Game Hall is open only for exhibitions.

During the first phase, the Ledebour and Small Pálffy Gardens underwent reconstruction. These gardens were opened to the public in June 1995. The palace gardens on the southern slopes of the hill crowned with the Prague Castle complex consist of five historic gardens: the Ledebour Garden, the Small Pálffy Garden, the Great Pálffy Garden, the Kolowrat Garden and the Small Fürstenberg Garden. These gardens represent a unique historic complex which is one of most significant Baroque garden works in Europe. Due to the lack of maintenance, these beautiful and historically priceless objects reached a state of catastrophe, and were closed to the public in the seventies. It is the result of a reconstruction carried out by the aristocratic Fürstenberk family. Malostranské nám. 556/29 The construction of this church started in 1704 on the site of a small, older Gothic church. The frontispiece was finished in 1710 and the nave, with its wreath of chapels, was consecrated in 1711. This part was clearly built by Christopher Dienzenhofer. The sanctuary and the cupola were built in 1737–1752 based on Dienzenhofer’s design, and the structure was finished by A. Lurago between 1751 and 1756. The interior is an example of the high Baroque style; the decorations were created by Jan Lukáš Kracker. The Crucifixion (1646) in St. Barbara’s chapel and Christ’s Passion series (1670), all pictures by Karel Škréta, originally created for the Jesuit Profession House,

The Petřín Observation Tower

The construction of the Petřín observation tower was initiated by the Czech Tourist Club on the occasion of the Jubilee Land’s Exhibition. It is a scale model (1:5) of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by Ing. František Prášil from the famous ČKD factory. Its construction started on 16 March 1891 and was finished on 20th August of the same year. The tower is located at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and is 60 m tall. It

form the most significant part of the interior decoration. Most of the sculptures in the church are works by I. F. Platzer. The oldest sculpture in the church is Our Lady of Foyen on the left altar, brought by the Jesuits from Belgium in 1629. The tower of the church (the baroque belfry) actually never was an integral part of the church as it was an independent property owned by the Lesser Town of Prague. It served as the bell- and observation-tower. The Petřín hill funicular railway

After its renewal in 1985, the Petřín hill funicular railway (lanovka) was integrated into Prague’s public transportation system. You may transfer onto it at the Újezd tram stop – it takes you up to Nebozízek and Petřín. To ride the funicular railway, you need a valid Prague transportation ticket which is good for transfers. 9 am–11:20 pm (XI–III), 9 am–11:30 pm (IV–X)

(Staroměstské náměstí) The historical centre of the town, the place of the most significant events, a unique complex of architectural and historic memories. In the middle there is a monument of Master John Huss by Ladislav Šaloun.

The Town Hall was built in 1338, in 1364 adjoining the tower with the chapel, in 1470 the Town Hall was reshaped in the late Gothic style. The horologe (orloj) is from the beginning of the 15 century; in the upper part every hour (9 am–11 pm) the procession of the 12 apostles in succession appears at the window.

The most precious burgess house of medieaval age, originally Romanesque, whose rare Gothic form and two-storey front face of 14 century was renovated in 1988. Currently it serves as an exhibition hall (City Gallery Prague). Open: ❷–❼ 10 am–8 pm

Prague 1, Národní 2 Neo-Renaissance building of 1868 to 1881 built according to plans of J. Zítek. In 1881 the finished theatre burnt, and was reconstructed by architect Josef Schulz in 1883.

Prague 2, Karlovo náměstí 23 A complex of Gothic buildings from the turn of the 14th and the 15th centuries, reconstructed in the Renaissance style during the years 1520–1526. They include a tower with the Holy Virgin Chapel, two Gothic Halls and a Renaissance Hall. Here was the seat of the Administration Offices of the New Town of Prague from 1377 to 1784. The defenestration of Catholic city councellors by Prague Hussites occurred here on July 30, 1419. The Tower is open for tourists daily except Mondays from 10 am–noon, 1 pm–6 pm (April – November), halls can be visited while exhibitions are held there. Admission (the Tower): 60/40/130 CZK

Emmaus

Prague 2, Vyšehradská 49 The Emmaus Monastery was founded by Charles IV in 1347 for Slavonic Benedictines with the Church of Our Lady and Slavonic patrons. At the end of World War II it was burnt by bombing. Two asymmetrical spires were finished in 1967. “Slavin”, the final resting-place of the most significant personalities of the Czech nation. Slavín was built between 1889 and 1893. Above the central memorial at Slavín is a sarcophagus with an allegorical winged statue the Genius Patriae. The motto of the Slavín cemetery is engraved above the name plates: Though dead, they still speak. To date, more than 600 personalities from the world of Czech culture and education are buried here. They include, for example, the composers Bedřich Smetana and Antonín Dvořák, the painter Alfons Mucha, the opera singer Ema Destinnová, the writer Karel Čapek, the Nobel Prize winner Jaroslav Heyrovský and many others. With a help of your imagination, Alice will go through all the beautiful and sweet moments of maturing, first loves, awakening adultery, knowledge of life, laughs, tears, joy, and sorrow. All of it takes place against the background of ancient Prague, its architectural jewels, its rich history, and Prague as a crossroads of Christian and Jewish cultures. Large-screen projections, animated film, puppets, unique on-stage tricks, black theatre effects, beautiful contemporary and classical music, and your imagination unite in a breathtaking show unseen in any other theatre.

Buses link the capital city not only with individual parts of the Czech Republic but also with all of Europe. Regular lines run to all the significant places in the European Union as well as outside of it. The most important bus depot is the Florence Central Bus Station, which is located in the very centre of the city.

The tickets are available at some Underground stations, at Transport Inquiries, at shops selling newspapers and cigarettes (with inscription Tabák), at some groceries, reception desks, travel services, yellow vending machines by the transport means stations. All lines of the underground operate from 5.00 am till midnight. Tram and bus timetables are placed at all stops. Funicular [(Prague 5-Újezd), stop of trams 9, 12, 15, 20, 22, 23 – Nebozízek – Petřín)] operates from 9 am till 11:30 pm (IV–X); from 9 am till 11:20 pm (XI–III), daily. Stickers are available at almost every petrol station or post office in the Czech Republic. Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) does not have its own selling points. When entering the Czech Republic on motorways D1 (from Poland near Bohumín), D2 (from Slovakia near Břeclav), D5 (from Germany near Rozvadov) and D8 (from Germany near Petrovice), the sticker can be bought on the first rest area after the border.

The Koněprusy Caves are located near Prague, close to the famous Karlštejn castle, and constitute the most extensive cave complex in Bohemia. The length of all rooms totals 2,050 meters. The underground complex of corridors, domes and pits is situated on three levels. Only two levels are open to the public; the tour is 620 meters long. Visitors can admire a unique formation called the “Organ”, the largest underground room known as “Prošek Dome”, with a torso of a mighty “Mohyla” (Barrow) stalagmite, and the “Mint”, with remnants of a medieval secret money counterfeit workshop. The most interesting speleothem decoration is known as the socalled “Koněprusy rose”.

Karlštejn Castle was founded in the middle of the 14th century by Charles IV for the safe-keeping of the crown jewels. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style and in the 19th century was renovated in the Pseudo-Gothic style. In the Chapel of the Holy Rood, where the treasury is kept, is a unique collection of Gothic paintings by Master Theodoric which were done in 1360. One of the most beautiful and best-preserved Gothic castles in Bohemia was built in the first half of the 14th century, and radically rebuilt in 1370. Part of the castle was rebuilt once again in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, and the entire castle was enlarged.

The principal castle tower’s ground plan is trapezoidal, and that is why an observant person might be surprised to see all its four edges at once. Kost Castle is also remarkable for its location: it is one of just a few Czech castles it wasn’t built on the top of a hill, but rather at a meeting point of three valleys. During the Prussian-Austrian war, on the night of 28–29 June 1866, the castle was used for a military purpose for the last time, and proved its excellent defence value: the Austrian army successfully diverted two Prussian attacks. The castle has an interesting history, and has had many owners. Kost Castle is owned by the Kinsky family today.

This hunting chateau in the baroque style, close to the east-Bohemian city of Sobotka, was built in the 2nd half of the 17th century as a likeness of the Galata Tower in Istanbul, constructed on an elliptical ground plan. Such an architectural layout is very unusual in the Czech lands. A Czech aristocrat, the baroque period nobleman Humprecht Černín of Chudenice, commissioned it to an Italian architect, Carlo Lurago, for the castle was supposed to meet the tastes of his Italian spouse. The Černín family visited the chateau for hunting and relaxation purposes. The observatory gallery offers a great view of Bohemian Paradise region; in nice weather you can also see distant Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) and Jizerské hory (Izera Mountains).

Třebíč is a picturesque town with rich history and a lot of valuable architectural monuments. The most remarkable have been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List – the St. Procopius Basilica and the Jewish Quarter with the Jewish Cemetery.

Litomyšl, a small town in Eastern-Bohemia, is going through a second renaissance. In recent years, twelve of the buildings on the hill of the château have been restored, and they are well worth a look. A visit to Litomyšl would not be complete without the complex of the château, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides guided tours that include a unique theatre,you can see the château houses with the Municipal Picture Gallery, a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Olbram Zoubek and A Heart for Václav Havel, and the birth family apartement of composer Bedřich Smetana. Other places worth a visit are the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, with a lookout tower and the exhibition Angels on the Hill, and the former Bishop’s Gymnasium, which today houses a successfully restored museum. To relax a little take a walk in the Monastery gardens and then full steam ahead to another places of interest.

The Basilica, built in the Romanesque style with some early Gothic features, is one of the treasures of medieval architecture. The most valuable part of the Basilica is the crypt. The Jewish Quarter is the only evidence of Jewish culture outside the territory of Israel included in the UNESCO list and it’s a unique complex of 123 buildings, among them the Front and Rear Synagogue, and the Seligmann Bauer’s House, with an exhibition of a typical Jewish household.

TELČ Telč is one of the most sought-after cultural destinations, where you can pleasantly spend your free time. From Adolf Loose, who was born here, through Bohuslav Fuchs or Ernest Wiesner, to the German Ludwig Miese van der Rohe, the designer of the world famous Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of Functionalism from 1930, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The residential and utility rooms and the beautiful garden of this unique house, with its flowing space, are open to the public, and the villa offers a fantastic view to the city.

Together with the chateau, the city square constitutes a unique architectonic complex, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Part of the undergrounds and underground corridors oriented toward the square were opened to the public in September 2014. Visitors can peek in the Telč undergrounds in their “raw” condition that continues along the entire square. They can also enter the renovated rooms, where modern projection technology present the city of Telč and its surroundings, as well important points of the history of its development.

The towns of Lednice and Valtice are located in the heart of the Lednice-Valtice Complex, which in 1996 was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites. The Kroměříž Flower Garden ranks among the most significant gardening masterpieces worldwide, these days being practically the only representation of such kind in Europe.The Flower garden has two main parts – the flower bank with shaped walls and broderiebeds, and the garden nursery with the Strawberry Hills. Every year, the beds in front of the colonnade in the flower bank are planted with twenty thousand summerannuals, grown in greenhouses and hot-beds directly in the Flower Garden. There are fountains among the colourful flowerbeds and green labyrinths, and the very centre of the garden is dominated by a rotunda with unique artistic decorations and a unique Foucault pendulum. One of the most attractive parts of the Flower garden is a 244-metre-long colonnade with statues of ancient gods and other historical figures of antiquity. The construction according to the design by Giovanni PietroTencalla was completed in 1671. The Flower Garden offer the visitors many surprising and unforgettable moments.

Žďár nad Sázavou lies in the beautiful countryside of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Area. The village emerged along the Cistercian Monastery founded in 1252, and was promoted to city in 1607. Today’s dynamic city is a modern center of the region, and – thanks of the magnificent nearby UNESCO landmark – an ever more popular tourist destination, and a gateway to the most beautiful part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands Region. The St. Johannus Nepomuceni pilgrimage church on Green Hill (Zelená hora) is a state-of-the-art work in the Bohemian baroque Gothic. Its extraordinary value was rewarded with its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It was built between 1719 and 1722 by one of the greatest Bohemian baroque architects, Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The ambit surrounding the temple was built on a decagonal pattern while the temple itself has the shape of a pentagram. The entire complex has five entrances, inside the temple there are five chapels and five altars. On top of the cupola there is a big tongue, the attribute of St. Johannus Nepomuceni. The entire structure combines two architectonic styles: Gothic and baroque. The main altar features a saint, standing on a globe, optically rising up. On the globe you can find the five octagonal Cistercian stars, representing the five continents where Christianity has spread.

Adrenaline seekers can take a sightseeing flight on planes and gliders. Visitors also like an adventurous cruise on the Santa Maria boat, on the Slezská Harta reservoir, where the grand movie Jane of Arc was shot. Those who like mysterious undergrounds can find the Na Špičáku chilly cavern, where occasional concerts also take place. Those coming back hungry from the hikes through the Jeseníky countryside will gladly try some of the selected regional specialties and drinks such as Warisch grilled sausages, the Milerski delicious mead and Schaumann “aqua viva”. Local people love their region, its rich traditions and appealing presence. They take a great care of its specific shape and love to present it to their visitors.

Near the Czech-Polish border you can find a watch tower located on Biskupská Kupa, in Zlaté Hory (Golden Mouintains), where gold used to be mined in the old times. Along with numerous museums, you can also visit the Praděd Gallery “U Halouzků”, in Jiříkov, where its creator, the sculptor Jiří Halouzka, placed several hundreds of his wooden carved sculptures and the biggest Nativity in the world. The about two dozen sculptures of the Jeseníky symbol, the děd Praděd (The Grandsir), that you can encounter in several important locations in Jeseníky also come from his workshop. PÍSEK – the poetic beauty on the river Otava We invite you to a town in the northern part of South Bohemia, with a population of 30 thousand, about 100 kilometers from Prague. Písek boasts the title “The best town to live in the Czech Republic”, and it is popular among tourists who look for high quality services, numerous places of interest and activities. A Stone Bridge spans the river Otava whose auriferous sand gave the town its name (sand = písek), and it is the oldest structure of its kind in the country. The early-Gothic Royal Castle is another landmark reminiscing the time when Písek was founded (1243), and that now houses the local Prácheň Regional Museum. The deanery Church of the Birth of Virgin Mary, with its 72-meter-high tower, dominates the town. Both the church and the tower are open for visitors. The recent investments in the revitalization of the historical center of Písek are evident at every step. On a groomed promenade on the banks of the Otava, along the fortification walls, is the original mill turned into the Municipal Electric Power Plant that today houses the museum of lighting. You can have a rest in a cozy park in the former castle moat. Behind the baroque

Town Hall, on one of the courtyards, you can find a former Malthouse, which, after costly renovations, has been turned into a center of illustrations for children and a playful gallery, as well as the Tourist information center and an exhibition on malting. Písek offers pleasant cafes and restaurants, as well as numerous events like the Town Festival (7 – 9 June 2019), the music festival Summer Festival (20 July 2019), the International Folklore Festival (22 – 25 August 2019), and the Beer Festival (6 – 7 September 2019). Each year big sand sculptures are built by the Stone Bridge to adorn the town for the whole summer. In 2019, they will portray figures related the events that took place in the years ending in 9, known as Písek’s Fateful Nines. Písecké hory (Písek Hills), next to the town’s eastern outskirts, offer excellent conditions for walks, longer hikes and cycling tours. You can learn about natural places of interest and enjoy views of the South-Bohemian countryside full of fishponds and the foothills of the Šumava mountain range. The poetic valley of the Otava invites for cycling tours as well as canoeing down to Písek, or even further to the majestic Zvíkov or Orlík Castles. You can get to Písek from Prague comfortably by bus.

The secrets of the construction of the fish-pond system are revealed in the Centre of Fish-pond Heritage at the House of Štěpánek Netolický, which also offers unique gallery facilities. The Třeboň Wildlife Rescue Station offers tours to get acquainted with the story of each animal. A tour to the Empire J. K. Tyl Theatre will take you to one of the oldest preserved painted curtains, while telling you about the history of theatre. The water tower, designed by Jan Kotěra, is at the

same time art gallery, technical monument and observation tower. It houses the Gallery of Buddhist Art, with an exhibition of traditional visual art from Mongolia, Tibet and China. Museum and Gallery Třeboň presents the exhibition The Story of Třeboň in Eight Centuries. Jan Žižka Museum has prepared a recreation of the life of the famous warlord with original film’s props and weapons. JINDŘICHŮV HRADEC This tourist season, Jindřichův Hradec will once again be a town full of great experiences for all visitors.

TOP 7 PLACES TO VISIT Stará Radnice Art Gallery In the first half of summer, you can visit an exhibition from the German Partner Town of Neckargemünd dedicated to railway motifs of the 1950s and 70s, or have a look at the permanent exhibitions “From the History of the City and its Autonomy” or “Railways playing”, dedicated to the local railways.

The House of Tapestries Presents the exhibition of art group TEN TO TWELVE titled Zašitá krása (Patched Beauty), a tribute to Maria Hoppe Teinitzer, Czech textile artist and founder of the famous tapestry atelier in Jindřichův Hradec. Needless to say, there will also be workshops and courses.

Jindřichův Hradec State Château It awaits visitors, not only with the classic tours, but also with concerts, opera and theatre performances. After its great success, the Château will again be the venue for the play commemorating the fate of one of the most important owners of the local estate, Vilém Slavata.

Château Mill Pay a visit to the permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of fish farming, forestry and rafting in the region. The building’s ground floor houses an original hydroelectric power system from 1887, built by Czech inventor František Křižík.

Jindřichův Hradec Museum Krýzovy jesličky (Kryza’s Chréche), the largest mechanic nativity scene in the world, is one of the many interesting permanent exhibits. But the museum also offers new exhibits, among others, „Zábava, vášeň, hazard aneb Z historie karetní hry“ (Fun, passion, hazard, or from the History of Card Games).

Museum of Photography and Modern Visual Media This season presents a new exhibition titled “Fotokomora Karla Neuberta” (Karel Neubert’s Photo Chamber). But there are other new exhibitions prepared along with many attractive workshops.

Rýdův Kopec (Rýd Hill) Lookout Tower The lookout tower, located in Děbolín, at about 6 km from Jindřichův Hradec, will open this season to welcome anyone who wants to look at the world from above.

TIPS FOR TRIPS: Jindřichohradecká úzkokolejka (Jindřichův Hradec’s narrow-gage train) offers a unique experience with rides on a historical train through a region known as Czech Canada, on rails with a 76 cm gage.

OREMOUNTAINS IN WINTER AND SUMMER All that skiers long for: Plenty of snow, beautiful tracks, countless cross-country routes. Did you know that the most elevated city in Germany lies in the Ore Mountains? This record belongs to the spa town Oberwiesenthal, located at the feet of the Fichtelberg Mountain. Exactly opposite Fichtelberg, is the Klínovec Mountain; with its 1244 meters above sea level it is the highest summit of the Ore Mountains. There you can find the longest pistes in the region, and numerous cableways and ski lifts for skiers. Winter sports enthusiasts appreciate the diverse terrain of the pistes and groomed cross-country routes, as well as U-ramp and snowkiting. The Klíny sports complex at the feet of Šumný důl offers, along with a new cableway, a true specialty: a snowpark designed by professional snowboarders, with a unique BigAir summer facility. The Ore Mountains invites cross-country skiers to its 250 kilometers of groomed tracks. The entire Ore Mountains region offers some 1,000 kilometers of marked cross-country routes.

But holidays for skiers in Ore Mountains offer much more. After a busy day you can relax your body and soul. There are plenty of ways: from a sauna in your cozy hotel, to the services of the nearby spa town Jáchymov. As soon as the snow melts, the Ore Mountains turn to a cycling and hiking paradise. The Ore Mountains central trail and numerous other hiking and cycling routes take you through the forests along quiet roads. Without loosing elevation, you can cross the entire mountain ridge from Petrovice all the way to Klínovec. The climbs are very mild. If you prefer mountain biking, the trails on the ridge take you to picturesque locations and to places with unworn views. If you get hungry along the way, you can stop by some of the little pubs and restaurants offering various specialties.
