Big Adventures Call for Big, Local Eats Out here in Southeast Montana, we thrive on our sense of place. The wide-open land, where the mountains roll out to meet the prairies is the epitome of home for many of us. Yet, when it comes to travel – whether it is day trips or overnights – we all have to eat. And, we like to eat well. While the “eat local” movement is not new, we’ve taken that adage a step farther. Launched in late 2018, the Montana Department of Commerce’s Taste our Place program focuses on matching Montana growers and producers with the restaurants, bars, cafes and coffee shops that will prepare and serve up scrumptious Montana goods. And, we have it on good authority that this is something the locals love, as much as the travelers.
Stop at the vintage pinball-themed Tilt Würks Brewhouse in Miles City for a snack of locally-produced pretzels (from Main Street Grind) with Tilt Würks High Score Hefewizen beer cheese sauce and a Montana craft beer. If wine is more your style, be sure to visit Tongue River Winery where you can not only taste-test and purchase your favorite, but it is likely that you’ll get a personal tour with the owners and learn their story of a life-long quest to make the best wine with the hardiest grapes in a place they love. You may even be invited to taste a grape off the vine or help pull weeds – and we all know how well an adult beverage tastes when consumed outside. How about right where it grows? Susan Joy, Made in Montana Program Director, noted that the Taste our Place program has been especially embraced in the rural areas but Billings, too, has a strong foundation of locally-grown, locally-produced products.Swanky Roots owners, Ronna Klamert and Veronnaka Evenson are a mother-daughter duo who married a tradition of family farming with new-century aquaponics gardening. The result – a year-round supply of lettuce and other greens for individual consumers and local chefs.

For example, 3 Brothers Bistro in Hardin serves an amazing Philly using sirloin steak from Ranch House Meats on Wheat Montana buns. Pair that with a Montana brew (they carry several) and top it all with some Wilcoxson’s ice cream and you have a mostly-Montana meal. Really, where can you go wrong? Farther up the road in Fallon, the BD Bar offers burgers and finger-steaks from beef raised on a nearby ranch, the Harding Land & Cattle Company. Yes, you heard that correctly: locallyraised Montana beef that doesn’t get shipped to Kansas City or similar parts unknown only to return on a freezer truck.

If you eat at Taste our Place facilities in Billings, such as Last Chance Cider Mill or Local Kitchen & Bar, it’s a pretty good chance that your salad started its day at Swanky Roots just west of town. Chalet Market, a staple on 24th Avenue West, remains a long-time member of the Made in Montana and Taste our Place programs – it’s a business built on that premise (plus, one of the best places in town to buy Martinson’s Candy, made in nearby Huntley). Finish it all with a cup of joe at Big Sky Coffee Roasters, where the beans are locally roasted and you can find Montana Tea & Spice as an alternative, pastries from Red Rooster in Laurel or bagels from Great American Bagel in Billings. Locals and visitors alike prefer quality food that is produced near its source. During your next trip out here, be sure to look for Taste Our Place members. Spring 2020 Home Improvement Show
The 37th annual Spring Home Improvement Show is bursting at the seams in two buildings - the Expo Center and Montana Pavilion. The Montana Pavilion is located directly on the main Metrapark parking lot, and the Expo Center is located adjacent to the Montana Pavilion. The show is recognized as the largest Trade Show in a five-state area (MT, ID, SD, ND, WY) with over 650 exhibits spanning from the East Coast to the West Coast, from Canada, and most importantly from right here in Billings. The show typically draws over 30,000 in attendance. This year’s show dates and hours will be Friday, March 6th, Noon - 8:00 p.m., Saturday, March 7th, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., & Sunday, March 8th, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The show will encompass over 100,000 square feet of inside exhibit space along with over 35,000 square feet of outside exhibit space. Not only are admission and parking FREE but there is a free shuttle to and from the upper lot to make all parking convenient. By Saturday morning, all of the exhibits will have been judged, and the coveted 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place “Best of Show” awards will be proudly displayed. The producers of the show, Mark, Rhonda, Beau, and Devon Hedin, attribute this as a result of the attendees being able to see the quantity (650+) and the quality of home improvement exhibits all within one show, thus saving attendees valuable time and effort. With a record-setting real estate market coupled with historically low-interest rates and the desire for homeowners to turn their homes into a more enjoyable environment, remodeling, decorating, and the building is at an all-time high. The majority of businesses exhibiting at the show are from Billings. Thus all
business transactions and the revenue derived from these transactions remain in our community. Many businesses use the show to introduce and test the waters with new products and services. Demonstrations of these products and services are always a big hit at the show. Specialty Food and drinks will be located throughout the show for weary show-goers. When the show first started 30 years ago in the corridors of Rimrock Mall, it was typical for exhibitors to come only hours before the show to set up their displays. As the show has grown over the years and the complexity of the displays has increased, some exhibits start setting up as early as ten days before the event. The show was located at the Mall for its first two years and consisted of 92 exhibits. In the third year, the show moved to the Holiday Inn Trade Center. The Trade Center was a brand new building and gave the show the ability to grow to 175 exhibits. After five years, the show expanded to two buildings - The Trade Center and the Ramada Inn Convention Center, allowing for 250 exhibits. After seven more years at these two buildings, the Expo Center at MetraPark was built. The show moved over to the newly built Expo Center, which gave the show the opportunity to expand to 450 exhibits. This year, which marks the 37th anniversary, the show is in two buildings at MetraPark - the Expo Center and the Montana Pavilion. This will give the show over 650 exhibit spaces. In an era of national economic growth, the major expansion of the show, and the large waiting list of businesses trying to get in the show, truly indicates the economy in and around Billings is well. Interactive displays are always a big hit at the show so that attendees can experience products to see how they would perform at home. There will be an HDTV Home Theater Rooms featur-

Other “Special Features” will include a custom backyard putting green, custom water features, live cooking demo’s and site-built manufactured homes that can take up to three weeks to construct. The Montana Modular Home Association endorses their dealers in only one show per year, and the Spring Home Improvement Show is the one they choose. All special feature rooms and demos are held in conjunction with the show and are free of charge. The next generation of home improvers will have equally as much fun taking part in the Kids Experience. Conveniently located throughout the show, kids have the opportunity to let loose and have fun. Home Depot will be sponsoring the Kids Workshops in which kids of all ages can develop their building expertise while having Mom or Dad lend a helping hand. Lynnrich is hosting Patty Cakes the Clown to make custom balloon animals, and Newman Construction will host face painting. Zee Creative is back with their famous Scavenger Hunt which will keep the kids entertained and having as much fun as their parents. All kids’ activities associated with the show are free of charge. Food is always a big hit at the show. It is as diverse as the exhibitors and offers food you can’t get every day. They are featuring snacks like cinnamon roasted almonds, mini donuts, kettle corn, and lattes. Other foods include Woodfired Pizza, Mexican food, Oriental food, chicken, meats, sausages, and pulled pork, and more bbq than you can eat. Following the Food Truck movement, some of Billings’s favorite food trucks will be “smoking” food to perfection. National touring displays will be coming to the show, which are “as-seen-on tv” products. Some of these include “Aquablade”, “Maxburn Fitness plate”, “Tumerix”, “Max Living Steam Mop”, plus many more….. This year’s prize package will consist of an all-time high number of prizes with a value of over $30,000. The Home Improvement Show has been known throughout its history as having the best and most prizes of any trade show in the area. Registration for this year’s grand prizes will be at the Expo Center. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
