Montana Historical Society Public reception honoring Mardell Plainfeather is being hosted by the Western Heritage Center, 2822 Montana Avenue, Billings, on Friday, March 6 from 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. The Montana Historical Society’s Board of Trustees honors an exemplary commitment, effort, and impact in identifying, preserving, and presenting Montana’s historical and cultural heritage for current and future generations. The Heritage Keeper Award honors contributions to Heritage Service to the State and People of Montana by Montana residents. Previous recipients include The Extreme History Project of Bozeman, Penny Redli, director of the Museum of the Beartooths in Columbus, and Sue Hart of Billings. Mardell Plainfeather Mardell Plainfeather’s Crow name—Baa Hinnaché, or Always Working—reflects her tireless spirit and dedication to preserving, documenting, promoting, and teaching the history, culture, and identity of the Crow Apsáalooke people. Plainfeather is an enrolled member of the Crow (Apsáalooke) Tribe, a member of the Big Lodge clan, and a Whistling Waters child. She speaks fluent Crow and is adopted in the Sacred Tobacco Society of the Crow—the original “medicine” of the tribe. She is a member of a Crow Women’s Language Club, a small group of women who gather frequently to practice language, have discussions, share food, and do beadwork; they say, “Our language is our identity.” Throughout the 1980s, Plainfeather was Plains Indian Historian Park Ranger at Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, and she taught classes at Little Bighorn College from 1986 to 1988. She spent seven years as Supervisory Park Ranger of Interpretation and Visitor Services at Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas. She “retired” from the Park Service and returned to Montana in 1997 to direct her immense energy toward interpreting and preserving Crow tribal history. Over the past twenty years, Plainfeather has been instrumental in developing and completing a wide range of museums, tourism, and public outreach projects on Crow history through partnerships with a wide variety of organizations, including the Western Heritage Center. From public lectures, museum exhibits, and tribal tourism initiatives to extensive oral history projects, articles, and books, her collected work comprises an invaluable contribution to the permanent record of the Crow people. Her 2012 book, The Woman Who Loved Mankind: The Life of a Twentieth-Century Crow Elder (co-authored with Barbara Loeb), is the autobiographical life story of Mardell’s mother, Lillian Bullshows Hogan. The book is a major contribution to Native American history, women’s studies, and interpretive autobiography, and is a groundbreaking work of ethno-poetry. With great awe and admiration, The Montana Historical Society recognizes Mardell Plainfeather with the Heritage Keepers Award.

West Side Story: Symphony Concert Version BILLINGS MT- Come to the Lincoln Center in downtown Billings on March 14, 2020 to experience West Side Story: Symphony Concert Version live for the first time in Montana. Showtime is 7:30 pm, with Concert Cues, an interactive discussion about the program, beginning at 6:45 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. See this American version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet on stage before you see it in theaters later this year. The creative dream team of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim challenged the status quo with their release of West Side Story on Broadway in 1957. It became a morality play an entire generation could relate to. It dared to talk (sing) about the social issues that were prevalent all over the nation. Issues like acceptance, tolerance, racism, and the American Dream. Does everyone have the right to live their lives as they see fit, or does that right only belong to those who are already living in America? Issues that still ring true today. The release of West Side Story was so against the norm of the Rogers and Hammerstein saturated Broadway musicals, the producers had a hard time getting Columbia Records to produce the original cast recording, even though it was nominated for multiple Tony Awards. It has since become an iconic coming-of-age story known the world over. West Side Story: Symphony Concert Version is a lightly staged production featuring a cast of Broadway professionals and local performers. The Broadway cast includes Jessica Soza (Maria), Marc Koeck (Tony), Beau Huchings (Riff ), and Aline Mayagoitia
(Anita). The local cast includes Brook Moncada (Rosalee), Chae Clearwood (Shark Girl), Alyssa Melder (Shark Girl), Logan Dolence (Action), CJ Jennings ( Jet Boy), Travis Kuehn ( Jet Boy), and Dylan Petit ( Jet Boy).
Jessica Soza (Maria)
Jessica Soza has had the pleasure of singing in 10 cities and 7 countries all over Europe. Her most notable credits involve playing Maria with the international tour of West Side Story in 152 performances. She graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles and obtained her BA from CSU, San Bernardino. Upon graduation, she moved to New York, during which she left to tour Europe with West Side Story. She returned to the United States after the tour closed and is now pursuing her MFA in Acting and Pedagogical Performance at CSU, Long Beach.
Marc Koeck (Tony)
A native of Fargo, North Dakota, Marc was most recently seen co-starring on the CBS hit show “Madame Secretary” and new series “The Code.” Other credits include: ‘Oggle’ in John Rando’s production of “High Button Shoes” off-Broadway at NY City Center Encores, featured soloist in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, staring as ‘Tony’ in the 50th-anniversary international company of West Side Story, as well playing “Tony” in critically acclaimed productions at The Guthrie Theatre, Florida’s Asolo Repertory Theatre, and Orlando Shakespeare Theatre. Montana artist Courtney Blazon showcased in NSG art exhibition The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings is excited to showcase Montana artist Courtney Blazon’s exhibition, “the moon has nothing to be sad about.” The exhibition opens on Feb. 20 and remains on view through March 26. Courtney Blazon’s exhibition, “the moon has nothing to be sad about,” is a group of mixed media drawings that explore the poetry and biographies of Sylvia Plath, Richard Brautigan, Baudelaire, and other figures seen through the eyes of her unique, inner world. Blazon draws intricate narratives layered with symbolism. Focusing on issues facing contemporary women and referencing the complexities of women’s lives throughout history, Blazon draws influences from literature, mythology and fairytales, societal expectations and coming-of-age issues. She leans into humor and irony to create rich visual stories weaving together autobiography, historical reality, and fantasy.
Courtney Blazon is an artist and illustrator living and working in Missoula, Montana. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design and the past recipient of the Montana Arts Council Innovation Award. In addition to exhibiting her artwork widely throughout Montana and the United States, her work has been featured in New American Paintings (Western Edition), Studio Visit Magazine, and juxtapoz.com. Blazon is represented by the Radius Gallery in Missoula. The artist will also offer a talk on the evolution of her studio practice titled, “Courtney Blazon: The Business of My Art” at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 in Liberal Arts Building room 116. The talk is free and open to the campus and community. The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the MSU Billings campus. St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Celtic Fair

Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition
Red Lodge, Montana- Stop in at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery to view the Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition and cast your vote for the best of show. The Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition will be on view March 5-30, 2020. Artist Laurie Lee of Powell, Wyoming selected 62 of the top works of art from 153 submissions for this show. On Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. an opening reception will be held at the Guild to celebrate the works in the show. First, second, and third place awards, as well as honorable mentions, will be announced at 3 p.m. the afternoon of the reception. Visitors are invited to cast their vote for the People’s Choice winner from March 5-14. This award will be given out at the reception. C.E. Laurie Lee’s work has been featured in many publications including Western Horseman, Art Talk, and Art of the West. She has shown her work in national art shows including the National Watercolor Society’s Art Exhibition in Los Angeles, California; C.M. Russell Museum Art Auction in Great Falls, Montana; the Western Visions Show in Jackson, Wyoming; the Cowgirl Up! Exhibition in Wickenburg, Arizona, and the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming. Lee was a Signature artist at the 2018 Art in the Beartooths annual fund-raiser for the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. In 2019, Lee received the prestigious Peter Fillerup Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. Reaching out, the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery provides art education and exposure to the visual, performing and literary arts for the benefit of the broadest possible audience. The Western Heritage Center Unveils 3 New Exhibits The Western Heritage Center will unveil three new exhibits when it reopens to the public on March 3rd, 2020. “We’re incredibly excited about these exhibits,” said Lauren Hunley, Community Historian. “Each one is surprisingly relevant to our community.”
New exhibits include:
• Saints & Sinners: Women Breaking Tradition explores 10 women in Yellowstone County who refused to let society dictate to them. Some of these women worked within societal expectations; some intentionally pushed against these restraints. But all of these women lived life on their own terms, paving the way for women today. • When Culture Meets Fashion: Apsaalooke Crow Style features the styles of Della BigHair-Stump (Designs by Della). Della blends traditional Crow designs with contemporary fashion to create beautifully unique clothing. • Now a Montanan: Stories of Immigrant Women in Yellowstone County is a partnership with Rocky Mountain College’s Office of International Programs. Learn the experiences of contemporary immigrant women and their journey to Montana.
2020 Hunting and Fishing License Year Begins

2020 Hunting Regulations Set The regulations for the 2020 deer, elk, antelope, black bear, moose, sheep, and goat hunting season are now available online. There a few things different this year including changes to the elk shoulder season in different districts, and information regarding CWD is more general than in years past. Makoshika State Park Hosting College Mascot Challenge
Get ready for the first-ever Makoshika State Park College Mascot Challenge on April 18. The Friends of Makoshika State Park have challenged regional college mascots to a unique triathlon, with a twist. The eight mascots will put their physical skills to the test as they vie for the title of Makoshika Mascot. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with autographs, college swag, food, music, and fun.

Students explore the Yellowstone River Valley during class field trip This semester, Montana State University Billings Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies Susan Gilbertz, Ph.D., introduced a new course to campus titled, “Sustainability in the Yellowstone River Valley.” On Feb. 17, a group of students and community auditors took advantage of a day off from regular classes to spend time seeing first-hand the concerns that Gilbertz brings to the class. “I have strong roots within Montana and specifically the Yellowstone River Valley,” said a community auditor present on the trip. “I had honestly never thought about sustainability in the Yellowstone River Valley until taking this course with Gilbertz. What she has done to educate others about the importance of sustainability is exceptionally valuable on all fronts.”
The first stop of the day was Pompey’s Pillar National Monument. Students proceeded to the riverbank, where erosion has taken away a favorite viewing point, and to the top of the Pillar, where they had birds-eye views of the valley to the east and the west. Floodplains, cottonwood recruitment, public access issues, island formation, and the cultural significance of the Pillar to American Indians and white adventurers were topics of discussion. The group was greeted in Miles City by Mike Backes of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks at the Region 7 area office. Backes has been working on understanding the endangered pallid sturgeons for over 30 years. He gave the group an overview of what is known, and still not known, about this species which is believed to have existed for nearly 300 million years. He explained issues regarding human activities that have altered the form and function of the river environments. Backes described efforts to track wild and hatchery-produced sturgeons as they migrate and spawn, and he challenged
students to imagine careers where they could dedicate most of their professional energy to learning about and respecting a species whose lifespan would equal or exceed their own. As a surprise highlight, Backes had arranged for the group to see, touch, and hold yearling pallid sturgeons. “One thing that stuck with me the most would be the pallid sturgeon and their life,” said a student. “I did not realize just how few mature pallid sturgeon there were in the wild.” This particular portion of the trip had lasting impacts on students, encouraging them to deepen their understanding of sustainability through real-world implications. “I would like to see more ways for people to find better ways to get these fish off the endangered species list and back to thriving,” the student added, “since they are prehistoric fish that have survived this long.” The group also took time to visit a portion of the levee system that protects Miles City from floods. On their way home, they also stopped to see the levee and irrigation diversion dam at Forsyth. Infrastructure and river impacts were important concerns throughout the day. The class will take another field trip on March 14. The second trip will make stops in Big Timber and Paradise Valley, specifically to visit ranches engaged in organic and regenerative practices. Luncheon speakers will discuss living with bank erosion and flooding. Gilbertz is able to accommodate a few more community members on the second trip for a $50 fee. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
