Youth Speech Contest
The Montana Farm Bureau Foundation announces its annual Youth Speech Contest in conjunction with the Montana FFA State Convention, March 25-28, 2020 in Great Falls. One of the Foundation’s most important goals is to aid in the agricultural education and the leadership development of Montana’s youth. Although FFA has similar contests for high school students the MFB Foundation wants to complement, rather than compete, with those contests. The Youth Speech Contest is open to students in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, who are not able to participate in the State FFA Prepared Speech Contest. Contestants must submit a transcript of their speech by March 23, 2020. Those will be judged prior to the FFA State Convention and the top 20 contestants will be invited to compete during the event. Speech topic: Farm life can be demanding and stressful. It’s even tougher now with trade wars, natural disasters, depressed commodity prices, labor shortages and many other issues weighing heavily on the farm economy. Given these challenges, more and more farmers today are experiencing stress and mental health issues, either directly or by having a friend or family member in distress. No one is immune. How can we address mental health concerns among rural Montanans and improve access to healthcare and mental health education resources? A prepared speech needs to be between 2.5 – 4 minutes in length. FFA members, 4-H members and any other student in Montana are all eligible to enter the contest. Prizes: 1st place = $400; 2nd = $300; 3rd = $200; 4th = $100; 5th = $50. Registration and a copy of your speech must be received by the Montana Farm Bureau Federation office by March 23, 2020. Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition
Red Lodge, Montana- Stop in at the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery to view the Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition and cast your vote for the best of show. The Rocky Mountain Regional Juried Exhibition will be on view March 5-30, 2020. Artist Laurie Lee of Powell, Wyoming selected 62 of the top works of art from 153 submissions for this show. On Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. an opening reception will be held at the Guild to celebrate the works in the show. First, second, and third place awards, as well as honorable mentions, will be announced at 3 p.m. the afternoon of the reception. Visitors are invited to cast their vote for the People’s Choice winner from March 5-14. This award will be given out at the reception. C.E. Laurie Lee’s work has been featured in many publications including Western Horseman, Art Talk, and Art of the West. She has shown her work in national art shows including the National Watercolor Society’s Art Exhibition in Los Angeles, California; C.M. Russell Museum Art Auction in Great Falls, Montana; the Western Visions Show in Jackson, Wyoming; the Cowgirl Up! Exhibition in Wickenburg, Arizona, and the Buffalo Bill Art Show in Cody, Wyoming. Lee was a Signature artist at the 2018 Art in the Beartooths annual fund-raiser for the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery. In 2019, Lee received the prestigious Peter Fillerup Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show. The mission of the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery is to support, inspire, and encourage all artists. The Western Heritage Center Unveils 3 New Exhibits
The Western Heritage Center will unveil three new exhibits when it reopens to the public on March 3rd, 2020. “We’re incredibly excited about these exhibits,” said Lauren Hunley, Community Historian. “Each one is surprisingly relevant to our community.”
New exhibits include:
• Saints & Sinners: Women Breaking Tradition explores 10 women in Yellowstone County who refused to let society dictate to them. Some of these women worked within societal expectations; some intentionally pushed against these restraints. But all of these women lived life on their own terms, paving the way for women today. • When Culture Meets Fashion: Apsaalooke Crow Style features the styles of Della BigHair-Stump (Designs by Della). Della blends traditional Crow designs with contemporary fashion to create beautifully unique clothing. • Now a Montanan: Stories of Immigrant Women in Yellowstone County is a partnership with Rocky Mountain College’s Office of International Programs. Learn the experiences of contemporary immigrant women and their journey to Montana.
2020 Hunting and Fishing License Year Begins
Hunting and fishing licenses for the 2020 season in Montana are now on sale. 2020 Hunting Regulations Set The regulations for the 2020 deer, elk, antelope, black bear, moose, sheep, and goat hunting season are now available online. There a few things different this year including changes to the elk shoulder season in different districts, and information regarding CWD is more general than in years past. Makoshika State Park Hosting College Mascot Challenge
Get ready for the first-ever Makoshika State Park College Mascot Challenge on April 18. The Friends of Makoshika State Park have challenged regional college mascots to a unique triathlon, with a twist. The eight mascots will put their physical skills to the test as they vie for the title of Makoshika Mascot. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with autographs, college swag, food, music, and fun.

People at High Risk for Serious Illness from COVID-19 Should Prepare Older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions should take precautions now to help protect themselves from COVID-19, even though there are NO CASES to date in Yellowstone County or in Montana. The Unified Health Command (UHC), made up of Billings Clinic, St. Vincent Healthcare, RiverStone Health and Yellowstone County Disaster, and Emergency Services urges Yellowstone County residents who are at higher risk of being infected with serious illness from COVID-19 to prepare for the likely spread of the disease. “As we’ve seen from outbreaks elsewhere, older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions are at higher risk. If you’re at serious risk, don’t wait for an outbreak in our state to take precautions,” said John Felton, Yellowstone County Health Officer and President and CEO of RiverStone Health. “Right now is the time to consider avoiding crowded places, long plane trips, and cruise ship travel. Like many viruses, COVID-19 appears to spread more easily between people who spend time together in close quarters.” While individual risk is dependent on exposure, the potential public health threat posed by COVID-19 is high, both globally and in the United States.
People at high risk for serious COVID-19 illness include:
• Older adults over age 60. • People of all ages who have severe chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, and other conditions • People receiving medical treatments that can suppress or compromise the immune system Early data suggest older people are twice as likely to have serious COVID-19
illness if infected. This may be because their immune systems are less able to fight off diseases and they are more likely to have underlying health conditions. Reducing risk of exposure is an important measure for those at increased risk for complications of the disease.
Guidance for People at Risk for Serious Illness from COVID-19:
• Stock up on household supplies, over-the-counter medicines, and groceries. Ask your healthcare provider about obtaining extra necessary medications or using a mail-order pharmacy. • Take everyday precautions. Wash your hands. Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, and mouth.

• Clean and disinfect your home to remove germs, especially frequently touched surfaces. • When you are out in public, try to keep distance between yourself and others. Avoid crowds, especially in closed-in settings with little air circulation. • When possible, avoid touching high-touch surfaces in public places, such as door handles, railings, elevator buttons and the like. Use a tissue or your sleeve to cover your hand to touch them. Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places. • If there is a COVID-19 outbreak in our area, stay at home as much as possible. Stay in touch with others by phone or email. • Think about friends, family, neighbors, church members and others who you might ask for help if you become sick. • Consider who could provide you with care if your caregiver gets sick. Pay attention to symptoms, including fever, cough, and

Give Young Wildlife A Chance Montana laws prohibit the capture, feeding, possession and harassment of wildlife—both game and nongame species— necessary in part to curb the urge to “help” newborn wildlife. Wildlife biologists see too often cases of newborn wildlife being removed from the wild by people who fear the animal has been abandoned by its parent—when the adult is actually nearby.
“Please remind friends and family to leave young wildlife untouched this spring,” said Ron Aasheim, FWP spokesman. “If you care, leave them there. Audubon Center & Outdoor Exploration
The Montana Audubon Center, adjacent to Billings and on the Yellowstone River, is a great place for walking, trail running, nature-watching, and learning about the plants and animals of the area. The site is located on the Riverfront Park portion of the Heritage/Dutcher Trail system. Its fifty-four acres of managed habitat contain three miles of accessible trails and three ponds as well as a variety of native plants, most of which have been planted as part of its 20-year restoration process from a gravel mine. One popular feature of the site is the Shepard Nature Playspace, Billings’ first and only Nature Playground, where kids are free to balance on logs, dig in the dirt, and build forts with our supply of sticks. A series of demonstration gardens near the building, including the Helen Carlson Cummins Bird Garden, are also an opportunity for learning about native plants and birds. Because of both wildlife and year-round education programs on site, visitors are asked not to bring pets. The public is welcome from sunup to sundown every day. There’s ample parking and easy on-off access to Interstate 90. On the immediate site and adjacent Norm’s Island and Riverfront Parks, staff at the Center offer a variety of public and private programs for exploring and learning about the natural world. Our on-site Fledglings Nature Preschool and Nature Nuts programs are designed for the under-5 set. Family and adult programs are held multiple times each month are are low-cost or free for members. Montana Audubon Adventure Camps provide week-long day camp fun each summer, and we host nearly 100 classrooms each school year for field trips. We also offer Homeschool Science classes, themed birthday parties, and private events through the year.
