Highland Creek Pipe Band

The Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada is the oldest permanently organized band in the Canadian Forces. Based at Fort York in Toronto, Ontario, the band has continued to serve its Country, Province, and City in many different roles throughout the world since its formation in 1863.

The Highland Creek Pipes and Drums formed in 1954 at the Dowty Iron Works in Ajax Ontario. Known as the Ajax Pipe Band, the band wore the ”MacDonald, Lord of the Isles” tartan, which is still worn today. Two years later they became affiliated with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 in Highland Creek and became known as “The Highland Creek Pipes and Drums”. This affiliation lasted until 1979, when the band became an independent non-profit organization.

Grand Celtic Pipe Band

The Toronto Signals Band, since 1926, is a unique organization. They perform for audiences throughout Canada and the United States, in events such as parades, concerts, tattoos and drum corp shows. The Grand Celtic Pipe Band made its debut performance in 2000. Led by Pipe Major Calum MacDonald, the band consists of over forty dedicated players. Most are from various communities along the Grand River, after which the band is named. The band's home base is in Fergus, Ontario.

The Tattoo Turn off the taps.

What is a Tattoo? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth-century Holland. In those days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum, would order "doe den tap toe" or "turn off the taps", the local last call equivalent of "time, gentlemen, please". In English, "taptoe" became "tattoo" and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and, in an early exercise in public relations, the band performed concerts for the local population. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dancers, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan Sunday, August 15th 2010 - 10am St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church - 325 St. George St. W, Fergus The Kirkin' O' The Tartan tradition is an old highland one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However, as the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well, they clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin' was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan and, at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans and the Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect for their old traditions. Join the Clans, Stuart Cameron, Tommy Leadbeater, and Liam McGlashon for the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games version of the Kirkin’. Please stay afterwards and enjoy a strupak in the church hall.

Sheep Shearing

Horseshoeing

The centuries old tradition of sheep shearing is brought to life again this year by Tom Redpath, a professional shearer with over 30 years of experience. His goal is to educate the audience about this traditional craft and demonstrate the intricacies of shearing a sheep that weighs as much as a small man.

Paul Fishbach, a local farrier, will join us to demonstrate the art of shoeing a horse. Watch closely as the hoof is prepared for the shoe and see how the shoe is positioned and attached. You can also meet “Earl” who stands patiently as each horseshoe is added.

Spinning & Weaving

Come and meet Chad Green who will entertain and educate you about the bagpipes. Learn all about how they are constructed, how they work, and why they give the sounds they do while enjoying a good laugh or two along the way.

The members of the Guelph Guild of Hand Weavers & Spinners will demonstrate various techniques to educate our visitors about the steps taken to create beauty from the wool of the sheep. Observe the process of spinning the washed, cleaned, and sometimes dyed wool that will then be knit, crocheted, or woven into various articles to keep us warm in the cooler months.

Hand Quilting Virginia Ingleby, owner of our local quilt shop Undercover Quilts and More, will be joined by members of The Grand Quilt Guild of Fergus for an old fashioned hand quilting bee. This special quilt has a Scottish theme with a special local twist and will be well worth seeing. Come back several times over the course of the weekend to see the progress.

Celtic Needlework Ellen Mervin and her team from Ruach Crafts will demonstrate Celtic needlework designs and techniques all weekend. Celtic Needlepoint and Cross stitch designs will delight all who visit. You can even try your hand at a small take home project as they teach you the simplicity of the techniques.

HMCS Fergus The HMCS Fergus was commissioned at Collingwood, Ontario on 18 Nov 1944, and was the last Corvette which was launched for the RCN. This is a wonderful collection of images and artifacts relating to the Fergus and it is our way of saluting the 100 years of service by the Royal Canadian Navy.

The What & How of Bagpipes

Tartans & Plaids Do you know the difference between a tartan and a plaid or is there one? The staff of Burnett’s & Struth will enlighten and educate us. You will leave this talk much better informed about fabrics and will know what to look for when seeking out your new kilt or scarf.

Scottish Cuisine Local baker, Tom Young, will tell us about various delicacies and food stuffs enjoyed by the Scots including haggis. When you leave, you can go home and maybe create your bit of Scottish fare.

Pottery Demonstrations Several local potters and clay artists will join us to demonstrate the age old artistry of clay manipulation and molding on the potter’s wheel. You will see them take a lump of wet clay and turn it into something as functional as a bowl or cup or as unique as a work of art in front of your eyes.

Sponsored by Meridian & The Township of Centre Wellington Join us for the return of the Fergus Scottish Festival’s parade through downtown, brought to you in conjunction with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 275. The first parade in 15 years will begin at Victoria Park and proceed to St. Andrew Street & end at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 275, celebrating 75 years of the Legion and 65 years of the Festival! Following the Parade please enjoy family entertainment by The Town Pants at the Legion.

Join the Fergus Curling Club by the ball diamonds as they host a “Learn to Curl” demonstration. Try throwing a rock down the artificial ice surface.

Fly Tying Techniques The Casual Dressers Club from Guelph and area will delight you with the intricate and delicate art of fly tying. Observe the interesting materials they use and how finely crafted each individual tie is as it is created step by step. You might even get a chance to make one yourself if you come early.

Falconry

A band formed around the concept of a Musical Play is now a life and force unto itself. Featuring seasoned musical veterans and a couple of Fergus’ own from the pipe band, Inverness performs traditional and original songs with a twist. It combines Celtic overtones with a more pop/rock based sound, bringing traditional favourites into the 21st century and beyond. Enjoy.

No one is sure when or where falconry began. Many say it began some 4,000 years ago in Asia Minor. Some say even earlier in the Far East. Falconry is the most highly regulated of all hunting sports today. Today, the ancient art of Falconry is still being practiced and used for bird control in such places as airports, orchards, landfill sites and is a safe efficient and economical alternative to poisons and chemicals.

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5 with Grade 1 including the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers. The Festival runs competitions for individual pipers and drummers, as well as whole pipe bands. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands who choose to compete must meet certain requirements. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (or set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are, and the more tunes required. Also, the difficulty level of playing is also increased for higher grades. For example, a Grade 5 band would only have to submit one medley of marches (around 3 tunes). A band in Grade 2 may have to perform a medley of tunes of different styles and time signatures (around 6-8 tunes). The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-5 minutes to 7-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes (which judges draw at the starting line to determine which they will perform). This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players, and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section (corps), use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen, and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing their comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.

Hadrian’s Wall

The Town Pants

Hadrian’s Wall is a Celtic-Rock band from Glengarry County in Ontario. Taking their name from one of the worlds’ greatest monuments located on the border of what is now England and Scotland, Hadrian’s Wall has a loyal following, especially in Canada and among Scottish/Irish Americans in the United States. They’re a rockin’ and reelin’ Celtic party band that have been entertaining audiences in North America for nearly a decade and a half.

Liam McGlashon Eleven-year-old Liam McGlashon, now making his home in Hamilton, was just six years old when he picked up the fiddle. Liam has honed his stage personality through playing on various stages, at kitchen parties, conventions and trade shows in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton.

Daniel McLaughlin As a boy, he received his formal vocal training while attending St. Michael’s Choir School. Growing up enveloped in music and influenced by his Celtic roots and a flourishing Scottish and Irish ex-patriot community in Toronto, Daniel absorbed the songs and stories of times back home and is a talented balladeer in the old country tradition.

Tommy Leadbeater Will again bring us his captivating voice, with its crystal clear tones, rich in harmonics and secure in its upper range which has earned him a reputation of being one of Nova Scotia's finest vocalists.

Combine aspects of Irish traditional, acoustic, pop, roots Americana, even Australian and Mexican influences, to create their own unique brand of “West Coast Celtic”. Armed with a pawnshop’s worth of musical instruments, The Town Pants play songs that appeal to young and old alike. The music of The Town Pants remains in the heart and head long after the music stops.

David Leask: David Leask is a performing songwriter who has blended his Scottish roots with the influence of his newfound Canadian home to produce three criticallyacclaimed CD's, one Juno nomination and a bag full of songwriting awards. His musical style is a fusion of Celtic soul & acoustic pop.

James McKie: At ten years old, James McKie began playing violin. Inspired by The Chieftains, he began picking out tunes and learning them by ear. James gained a thorough understanding of and deep respect for Cape Breton fiddle music after spending a couple of summers at the Gaelic College in Nova Scotia. James is a dynamic and versatile musician fluent in many different styles of music.

Fiddlestix With an arsenal of Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, electric funk and yes, rock-be prepared to get on your feet and stay there! This energetic dynamic fantastic group of 4 is guaranteed to please everyone from 2-102! Having traveled the globe leaving avid fans in their wake.

Bob McLean A brilliant Celtic fingerstyle guitarist, Bob is a gem of traditional & Celtic inspired tunes.

On behalf of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals I wish to welcome you to the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games and to congratulate everyone who had a hand making it a reality. The organizers, volunteers, Board of Directors, vendors, exhibitors and performers have all put in long hours to ensure that your experience here is happy and fulfilling. Of course, none of this would be possible without you, the audience. The Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games is an annual celebration of community spirit and great music in Fergus and we all play a part in its success. Collectively we create more than just an event on a weekend in time; we enrich the character and culture of our communities, and in turn our country. With twenty-eight member festivals, the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals is proud and delighted to celebrate and support the people and activities that fill our province’s fields and halls with music each summer, and indeed year round. Congratulations once again to the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games on another successful year and hats off to everyone involved. Enjoy the festival! Most sincerely, Paul Mills, Board President
