From the Desk of the Mayor As your new Mayor, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Centre Wellington Winter Community Guide. There are many programs for you and your family to participate in including aquatics, fitness, March break camps, and seniors programing. Our Community Services staff work hard to provide clean, safe, and friendly facilities, open space, trails, and programs to encourage residents to stay active and in motion. If you haven’t tried out one of our facilities or programs lately, I encourage you to check out this guide and see the many opportunities there are to keep moving! I would also like to take this time to let our residents know about our exciting new Township Website centrewellington.ca that we launched in early October 2014. The new website gives quick and easy access to essential information as part of the Township’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and availability of information to residents and visitors alike.
MAYOR
The website is divided into five sections: Live Here, Be Active, Visit Us, Do Business and Our Government. Each section provides detailed and relevant information on the programs and services offered by the Township.
KELLY LINTON
Finally, I want to celebrate an outstanding achievement for our community. Centre Wellington hit the Culture Days National Top Ten for a Rural Community for a second year in a row. Ranked by the total number of registered Culture Days activities in 2014 the top ten recognizes the most proactive cities in Canada during Culture Days. This year Centre Wellington was ranked fifth, up two places from seventh place in 2013. Culture Days national organization noted that the 5th anniversary of Culture Days was “a stellar one” and congratulated the 873 Canadian cities and towns who hosted events! Once again our Community Services staff did an outstanding job in pulling together the 2nd annual Cultural Days passport program.

Diapers As a courtesy to all we request and require that all individuals who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes. Family Swim Passes The Township offers an annual Family Swim Pass. This is valid for all drop in swims (lane, public, family, adult leisure, special needs, parent and tot). The cost is $365 per year- just a dollar a day! This pass can be used for two adults and up to four children. We offer as well numerous other passes for adults and seniors for a variety of programs. Please call (519) 846-9691 x 903 for more information. Feeding your children before swimming: Children may experience nausea while swimming after eating a large meal. Please give your child ample time to digest his or her food before swimming. Please do not feed your child a large meal just prior to swimming. Financial Assistance for Swimming Lessons: The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington provides financial assistance for children in need so they can participate in sports, cultural and recreational activities. Funds are available for the activity of the child’s choice as long as the activity will benefit and enrich his or her own personal development. For further information or information on how to apply, contact the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington at (519) 826-9551. Free Public Swimming NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD. PUBLIC SWIM will provide free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55 pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month. Gift Ideas Looking for gift ideas? Pool Temperatures We have 3 different pools on our deck. They are maintained at the following temperatures: Main Pool– 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) Leisure Pool– 33.5 Celsius (92 Fahrenheit) Whirl Pool – 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) Private Rentals A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday or host a special event. Rental times are available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00pm-5:00 p.m. Call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services at (519) 846-9691 x 321 for more information. Spectators Spectators are welcome to watch from the Aquatic Viewing Gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted. Strollers Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left outside of the change rooms. Strollers are not to be on the pool deck. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits and the pool deck are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required. Swimming Lesson information: Cancelled Classes: Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid having the your program cancelled. Deck Supervisor: During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor who oversees all lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress he or she is available to answer your questions. Family Lessons: We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons called “Family Lessons”. You can coordinate all your children’s lessons to take place at the same time. Lessons are run in this format on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, and Saturday mornings. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate all of our swimmers, instructors will teach multi level classes. Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers. Missed Classes: If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up.
Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex (519) 846-9691 x 321 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff. Private Lessons Private lessons run in the same nine lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for semi private lessons you can register one child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You need to contact the Sportsplex to register the second child. For more information call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services, (519) 846-9691 x 321. Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children, please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, he or she may not have the skills required to be successful in the next level. Swim Lesson Report Cards Your child will receive a report card booklet that will track his or her progress throughout the swimming levels. Please bring your child’s report card to their first class and give it to his or her instructor. If your child is not present for the last swim lesson you can pick up their report card at the front administration counter at the Sportsplex. Transfers You can transfer classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.

Microchips Bring Major Changes to Hearing Care
Elora, ON – The world is going wireless. Phones function flawlessly without cords. We surf the internet from planes. GPS devices give us street directions as we drive. And now, thanks to advanced microchip technology, the hearing impaired can enjoy home entertainment and mobile phones with the same ease and flexibility as those with normal hearing. Wireless Transmission of Sound – The ability for hearing aids to receive sound sent wirelessly from the television, stereo and computer is now a reality. Hearing aid users no longer need awkward necklace-style devices to receive wireless audio signals. Individuals can listen “privately” through their hearing instruments, at the volume they prefer, while others in the room enjoy a volume comfortable for them. The same microprocessor technology allows hearing aid wearers to enjoy hands-free use of cell phones. By using a new Bluetooth™ frequency called Bluetooth™ 4.0, conversation is sent from the phone to both ears without the use of any other device. Options for Noisy Environments – Along with enabling direct-to-ear-wireless communications, microprocessors help hearing aid wearers more easily understand speech in noisy environments. New techniques, such as band-splitting and specialized sound classifications, facilitate more natural hearing in challenging environments. Now, instead of across-the-board amplification, hearing aid wearers can prioritize important sounds, such as speech, while retaining auditory awareness of less critical sounds. Promise Breakthrough in Hearing Technology – New technology hearing aids sends phone conversation and TV directly into hearing instruments, while letting users stay connected to their surroundings at the same time. Some manufacturers utilize a robust 2.4 GHz wireless signal, which, when coupled with advanced microprocessors, allows wireless transmission of sound up to 23 feet from entertainment devices. New technology hearing instrument’s Spatial Directionality™ feature enables more natural hearing in noisy surroundings. Using directional technology, one ear focuses on speech, while the other ear monitors sounds from around the individual. Speech Spotter Pro™ allows the user to focus on speech, and tune out background noise completely. A tell-tale sign of this latest technology is: while in the office, no wires or neck loops are used in dispensing hearing aids.

“I have worn hearing aids for several years and I was having problems hearing. In fact, I got new hearing aids less than a year ago and I wasn’t happy with them. So, I noticed this place in Exeter called Hear Well Be Well and I ended up going in. John impressed me! He knew what he was talking about and suggested that in order for me to get better hearing, I was going to have to change my hearing aids. So that is what happened. I had an evaluation and my maximum hearing was at 28% and as a result of my new hearing aids, I am now up to 88%. My television is now at a 1/4 of the volume it was since getting my new hearing aids and my PMS 604 PMS 368 PMS 357 PMS 282 PMS 298 friends at Church have noticedR a122wonderful R 19 R0 R 0 improvement.” R 253 G 181 G 45–Pastor G 99 G 234 G 193 Bob DeGraw, Centralia, ON B 50
