High-tech options can create a boost for tire life ARA - They are the vehicle’s only connection to the road, yet often tires are the last thing people think about. Today's tires are more technologically advanced than ever before. As the technology rapidly advances, so do consumers' options to choose the right tires. Vehicle manufacturers carefully outfit cars and trucks with particular tires for each vehicle's purpose and performance. When those tires wear out,

there are a few important steps to take. Know the size Check the existing sidewalls and write down the numbers there, especially your existing tire size. All four tires should be replaced with ones that are the same size, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. However, there are times when a vehicle manufacturer requires different sizes for the front and rear axles, so be sure to check the

full benefit from your investment. Match needs with tires The outside of a tire can show a lot about its performance attributes. For example, large, aggressive-looking lugs with big spaces in between are generally good for off-road traction. Deep sweeping channels help evacuate water and slush from a tire to enhance traction. Many small "sipes" in a tire help create additional biting edges to enhance all-season traction. An asymmetrical tread optimizes traction characteristics across the face of the tire, so the outside can optimize cornering grip, while the middle or inside provides stability and traction. What's on the inside? Today's tires feature many specialized compounds and high-tech construction techniques that give them performance attributes. Examples include unique materials such as volcanic ash for icy conditions, and reinforcements such as carbon fiber and Kevlar, which can give sidewalls extra toughness, or dampen sounds and vibrations.

vehicle owner's manual. Consider driving conditions An all-season tire would probably be the right choice for a climate that experiences dry and regular wet conditions, along with light to moderate snowfall. Seasonally, winter tires make sense for those who live in areas that regularly get heavy snowfall or extended periods of icing or wintery mix conditions. Know what you want Do you want the quiet comfort of a luxury all-season tire? Increased puncture resistance and extreme off-road traction for rock crawling? Or is it all-season performance and increased fuel economy? Thanks to recent technological advances, today's tires can give vehicles an extra edge in all those areas. Consider cost Drivers paid a lot for the technological advancements designed into their vehicles, from traction control to stability control or a sport suspension, but the tires are the only things translating those benefits to the road; if they aren't up to the task, you won't get the

Regular oil, filter change helps a vehicle live to a ripe old age MS - Those who have postponed buying a car because of a weak economy are not alone.

More than 100,000 potential new vehicle owners are planning to hold onto their

vehicles much longer than they originally intended to, according to Edmunds.com, an on-

line automotive resource. Under those circumstances, there is no better way to ensure that a vehicle will continue to serve well long-term than by regularly changing its oil and filter. "Using the correct grade oil and premium oil filters at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended intervals keeps contaminants out and protects the engine from damage," said Ramon Nunez, spokesman for Purolator Filters NA LLC, a leading supplier of automotive filters to the North American aftermarket. Like cells, muscles and tissues in the human body, mechanical systems work in concert with one another. While oil protects, lubricates, and cools mechanical components and keeps them working together with minimum friction, the oil filter plays the crucial role of

sifting out harmful contaminants such as dirt, metallic shavings, and other potentially damaging particles. Therefore, failure to change the oil and filter routinely can lead to harmful sludge build-up and premature engine wear, resulting in major repairs and, in extreme cases, engine failure. Premium technology benefits "Modern vehicles pose new challenges for oil filter manufacturers," said Nunez. "Today's smaller, hard-working engines are built with tighter tolerances and run lighter weight oil to reduce friction and save fuel. So premium filters that are manufactured with cutting edge technology are the best replacement option for any vehicle." He said premium oil filters are designed to ensure clean oil flows unrestricted. Advances in filter design To accommodate developments in vehicle and engine design, as well as more demanding operating environments, today's oil filters must have media, seals, and bonding agents that are fully compatible with all popular conventional and synthetic oils. They must accommodate new oil chemistry that has seen levels of zinc

(ZDDP) reduced and, in some cases, supplanted by other, more eco-friendly materials. Oil filters must perform reliably with oil viscosities ranging from the traditional 10W30 and 10W-40 to ultra-lowfriction 0W-20 oils. As a result, the design, construction and materials in oil filters have all seen enhancements over the last few years. Some filter media, for instance, comprise a special blend of synthetic and natural materials to offer added protection and prevent oil restriction for a longer time, thereby prolonging engine life. The bottom line According to the Car Care Council, drivers should follow the guidelines given in their vehicle owner's manual to select the correct grade of oil and change it as often as suggested by the manufacturer, typically 3,000 to 5,000 miles. But, the council warns if driving is “severe,” it is better to stick to the tried-and-true three months or 3,000 mile schedule. "The bottom line is changing the oil and filter on the vehicle frequently - especially if planning to own it for a while - will enable it to perform at its best to a ripe old age.”

Vehicle’s enemy hides in snow In recent years, many people have been caught off guard by a new development in deicing and anti-icing of roads the widespread use of magnesium chloride. Now used on its own and in many combinations with sodium chloride and calcium chloride by municipalities across Canada and the United States, those chemicals have led to what is being called a “corrosion explosion.” Why is magnesium chloride such an enemy to vehicles? There are a number of reasons. One is the higher chloride (salt) content of magnesium chloride compared to more traditional de-icing chemicals such as sodium chloride. Chloride is the main culprit in corrosion. A second reason is how

strongly moisture is attracted by magnesium chloride. In fact, a recent experiment showed solid magnesium chloride becoming a liquid within eight minutes where sodium chloride was still in a solid state after six hours. More moisture means that for a much higher percentage of the time, the salt on a vehicle is wet. When it is wet, the owner cannot even see the white that is normally associated with salt. When the surface is wet is when the corrosion process is rapidly underway. A third reason magnesium chloride is such an enemy to vehicles is its higher viscosity, which allows it to stick and cake up on a surface more easily. Researchers on the subject of chloride removal focus on

how chlorides become surface reacted with the metals forming a new chemical bond. When that happens, those salts are very hard to remove. Some salt truck operators have even been known to use a chisel to try to removed those from the underside. It is generally accepted that the 35,000 to 40,000 pounds per square inch of mechanical pressure is required to break the bond. De-icing and anti-icing salts do not appear to be going away anytime soon. There is over 20 million tonnes per year of it used in North America, and at least for now, it appears that magnesium chloride will continue to be part of the mix. Much research remains to be done. submitted article

Get your auto maintenance in gear; safety tips, money savers

TRUE CENTRE MUFFLER & BRAKES ARA - Trimming auto maintenance expenses is not worth the risk. Taking proper care of the car steers people on the road to safe driving. It can help them keep more cash, too. “Even the most cautious drivers are putting themselves in danger if they are not driving

a well-maintained vehicle,” said Charles Valinotti, senior vice president with a large insurance company. Most are diligent about addressing major mechanical issues, especially with today’s automatic alerts. But, many overlook basics – such as tires

– which can quickly outlive their usefulness. In recent surveys, two out of three drivers did not know how to tell if their tires are bald and only 9 per cent of vehicles had four properly inflated tires. Valinotti warned windshield wipers go unnoticed until it is

too late. And holding off on an oil change or spark plug replacement is not worth compromising safety either. In addition to the peace of mind from reliable tires, windshield wipers, brakes, suspension, and steering systems,

Driving with a poorly tuned engine or improperly inflated tires could mean filling the gas tank more often. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 per cent.

there are other benefits from proper car maintenance: - save from expensive car repairs after an accident that could have been prevented; - extend the vehicle’s life span and avoiding replacement costs for big-ticket auto parts; - save money at the pump.
