The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes. Feeding your children before swimming: Children may experience nausea while swimming after eating a large meal. Please give your child ample time to digest their food before swimming. Please do not feed your child a large meal just prior to swimming. Financial Assistance for Swimming Lessons: For families looking for additional support, there is funding available through the Canadian Tire Jump Start Program. This excellent program offers funding for swimming lessons and minor sports activities. For further information or how to apply, contact the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington at (519) 826-9551. Private Rentals • A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Our Leisure pool is available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00pm5:00pm. Starting in April our main pool is available from 6:00-7:00pm on Saturdays. Please call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519-843-2800) for more information. Spectators Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted. Strollers Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left outside of the change rooms. Strollers are not to be on the pool deck. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits and the pool deck are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required. Swimming Lesson information: Cancelled Classes Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment. Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck Supervisor on deck. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions. Family Lessons For our summer swimming sessions (all but Wednesday evenings) we run lessons in our Family Lessons format. Most swimming levels are offered at the same time so you can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes. Most lessons are 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers. Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up. Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex (519) 843-2800 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff.
Private Lessons Private lessons run in the same 9 lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for semi private lessons you can register 1 child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You need to contact the Sportsplex to register the 2nd child. For more information call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services, (519) 843-2800. Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level. Transfers You can switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.
NEW FOR SUMMER We’ve made some changes for the Summer session. Please look through the aquatic section for more details. $ Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres unassisted, demonstrate basic floats by themselves and increase their distance on front and back glide. Assisted front swim and rollover glide are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
Focus is on deep water skills, building endurance for front and back swims up to 7 metres and a 15m continuous swim. Swimmers will learn the sitting dive and increase their distance on front and back glide with kick. Safety skills include combination skills such jumping into deep water, swimming 5m, surface support for 20 seconds and returning to safety. Swimmers also learn to use throwing assists.

RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 79.00 LEVEL 8
Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on submersion, front and back floats, front, back and side glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 metre swim.
Swimmers learn and complete 15 metres of back crawl, demonstrate 15 metres of front crawl while further developing their technique and are introduced to whip kick on their backs. Swimmers build deep water confidence through stride dives and a minute of surface support. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.
This level is an introduction to breast stroke and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.
RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 65.00 LEVEL 2 Swimmers focus on building on skills learned in Swim Kids 1, including rhythmic breathing, front and back floats, front, back and side glides with kick and roll-over glides. Swimmers work on the 5 metre front swim and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.
RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 65.00 LEVEL 3 This level provides an introduction to diving. Deep water skills such as changing direction, 20 seconds of surface support and deep water floats are introduced. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick, a 10 metre front swim and a 15 metre swim.
RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 65.00 LEVEL 4 This level builds proper front crawl technique through at 10 metre front crawl swim and introduces the back swim with shoulder roll for 15 metres. Swimmers work on kneeling dives, 45 seconds of surface support in deep water and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25 metre swim.
