Aquatics -Pool Information DID YOU KNOW? ... Diapers

As a courtesy to all we request and require that all children who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes.

Feeding your children before swimming:

Please refrain from feeding your child a large meal prior to swimming.

Financial Assistance for Swimming Lessons:

For families looking for additional support, there is funding available through the Canadian Tire Jump Start Program. This excellent program offers funding for swimming lessons and minor sports activities. For further information or how to apply, contact the Community Resource Centre at (519) 843-7000.

Free Public Swimming

NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD PUBLIC SWIM will provide free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55 pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month.

Private Rentals

A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Our leisure pool is available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Starting in April our main pool is available from 6:00-7:00pm on Saturdays. Please call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519-843-2800) for more information.

Spectators

Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted.

Strollers

Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left outside of the change rooms. Strollers are not to be on the pool deck. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits and the pool deck are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required.

Swimming Lesson information:

Cancelled Classes Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment. Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck Supervisor on deck. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions. Family Lessons We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons on Monday, Tuesday Friday and Saturday evenings called “Family Lessons”. You can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes. Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers. Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up.

Private Lessons

Private lessons run in the same 9 lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for Semi private lessons you can register 1 child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You need to contact the Sportsplex to register the 2nd child. Swim Lesson Progressions

Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level.

Swim Lesson Report Cards

The Township has updated our report card system. Your child will receive a booklet that will track their progress throughout their swimming levels. Please bring your child’s report card to their first class and give it to their instructor. If your child is not present for the last swim lesson you can pick up their report card at the front administration counter at the Sportsplex.

Transfers

You can switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.

NEW FOR SPRING! We’ve made some changes for the Spring session. Please look through the aquatic section for more details. Swimming lessons: We have added additional swimming lessons on Saturday afternoons from 4:15-5:45pm. Swim Changes: • We have continued Deep Water Running and Water Walking times in the pool during the morning on weekdays. • We have an Annual Family Swim pass. This is valid for all drop in swims (lane, public, family, adult leisure, special needs, parent & tot). The cost is $365 / year. • During Friday evening public swims the slide will be open from 6:30-7:30. Aquafit Class Change: Pre-registered Deep Water classes will continue to be offered on Monday & Wednesday nights from 5:15-6:00. Summer Programs: We will continue to offer our summer family swim passes at a cost of $100.00 and individual (child or youth) passes at a cost of $40.00. These passes will be valid from June 28th – September 1st. Summer Swimming Lesson Sessions: This summer we will be offering our swimming lessons in a variety of formats. Our session dates for the summer are as follows: Daily lessons (every day for 2 weeks between 8:45-11:45am): Session 1 July 2-12, Session 2 July 15-25, Session 3 July 29-August 9, Session 4 August 12-22. ADMISSION POLICY:

Children under the age of 10 years may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 12 years of age and is responsible for their direct supervision with a maximum of 2 children for each parent or guardian. The ratio of non-swimmer to parents or guardians may be increased for children aged 6-9 to a maximum of four children to one parent or guardian if life jackets are worn by all non-swimmers in their charge. Children between the ages of 6 & 9 who are swimmers (pass the facility swim test) may be admitted to the swimming pool unaccompanied. Parents/guardians must be present for the swim test, and remain in the facility for the duration of the swim.

SWIM TEST CRITERIA

Front swim 6 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 12 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 6 meters. Must make an attempt at over arm recovery with a near horizontal body position. Lifeguards reserve the right to have any swimmer complete the swim test to determine competency to use the deep area of the pool

AGE 10+

If not competent swimmer will be required to stay in shallow water. Admission Requirements: No adult supervision required. Adult : Child Ratio: N/A Band Colour: GREEN Each ratio indicates the maximum number of children that one responsible person (aged 12 or older) is able to supervise. Parent/guardian must be in proper bathing attire, in the water, actively participating within arms reach at all times.

High-risk Participants

High-risk participants must be in a ratio of 1:1. High-risk participants are defined as those who have a condition or illness that may put them at risk in an aquatic environment (e.g. frequent seizures, fainting conditions, etc) and those who are unable to control behaviour or impulses and require direct supervision.

Patrons that have successfully completed the swim test will receive a “Swim Test Card�. Upon future visits to the facility children can present the swim test card to reception staff when paying for swims and will receive the appropriate colour wristband. A parent / caregiver must be in the facility during the swim. If you forget your swim test card you will be required to complete the swim test again. If at any time a patron with a swim test card is unable to complete the swim test their swim test card will be revoked.

SWIM DESCRIPTIONS Lane Swim The pool is open for swimmers of any age to swim lengths. For Lane Swims in Bold only one or two lanes are available for lane swimming and other programs will continue to run in the remainder of the pool. Deep Water Running Two lanes in the main pool will be dedicated to deep water running. Enjoy the physical benefits of running without the impact on your joints. This is not an instructed program. Water Walking The shallow area of the pool is open for water walking. Enjoy the physical benefits of walking without the impact on your joints. This is not an instructed program. Parent and Tot Swim Parents or caregivers can come and swim with their children in our leisure pool. Children are to be accompanied by an adult. These swims are combined with our Special Needs Swims. Please note, during some morning swims the leisure pool may be shared with our Diaperfit program for 15 minutes of the swim. Adult Leisure Swim Adults can come to enjoy “unstructured” swimming in the main pool. Two lanes are designated for those wanting to swim lengths. The whirlpool is available for these swims.

Family Swim Come enjoy time in the pool as a family. All the pools are open, the waterslide will open at 2:00. Children are to be accompanied by an adult. A lane will be designated for those wanting to swim lengths. The last 2 hours of these swims will be combined with public swimming. Special Needs Swim This swim takes place in our leisure pool (the slide does not run). Our leisure pool is maintained at 92 degrees. Caregivers volunteering their time to help a person with special needs are admitted free (1 caregiver per person). Adults, seniors, and children are welcome. AQUAFIT DESCRIPTIONS General Aquafit Use the resistance of water to assist in a quality low impact workout. The option of deep water aquafit will be made available to those interested in it. Deep Water Aquafit Enjoy the benefits of an aquafit workout with no impact on joints. Flotation belts are provided, comfort in deep water is required. Aqua Zumba Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with transitional aqua fitness disciplines, the Aqua Zumba class blends it all together into a

safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. Come join the POOL PARTY! Rehabilitation Aquafit These classes, taught in our warm leisure pool, can assist with recovery, increase flexibility and range of motion much faster and with less stress on the body than a typical post rehabilitation exercise class. Arthritis Aquafit These classes are taught in our warm leisure pool and are specifically designed for those

dealing with Arthritis. Exercising in warm water can maintain and improve your mobility through range of motion exercises. Diaperfit A pre registered aquafit class designed for parents and their babies (babies must have established neck support). The first 30 minutes is an Aquafit class in the main pool for the parent and babies float in a specially designed boat beside their parent). The last 15 minutes is spent in the leisure pool and is a structured parent and tot class. Pre-registration is required.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on submersion, front and back floats, front, back and side glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 metre swim.

Swimmers learn and complete 15 metres of back crawl, demonstrate 15 metres of front crawl while further developing their technique and are introduced to whip kick on their backs. Swimmers build deep water confidence through stride dives and a minute of surface support. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

This level is an introduction to breast stroke and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

RED CROSS SWIM KIDS $ 65.00 LEVEL 2 Swimmers focus on building on skills learned in Swim Kids 1, including rhythmic breathing, front and back floats, front, back and side glides with kick and roll-over glides. Swimmers work on the 5 metre front swim and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10 metre flutter kick and a 10 metre distance swim.

Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick, a 10 metre front swim and a 15 metre swim.

This level refines front crawl as swimmers swim 25 metres with a focus on hand entry and breathing. Swimmers perform 25 metres of back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll. The level introduces elementary backstroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

This level refines the front and back crawls as swimmers perform 100 metres of each. Elementary back stroke and breast stroke are refined. Swimmers are challenged to travel using just their legs for support for 3 minutes. They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and selfrescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

This level builds skills and endurance for the front and back crawls as swimmers perform 50 metres of each. Elementary back stroke technique is developed through a 25 metre swim and whip kick on the front is introduced. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entries. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance. Swimmers will complete 100 metres each of front and back crawl, 50 metres each of breast stroke and elementary back stroke and are introduced to a 25 metres sidestroke swim. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the vertical dolphin kick and a 500 metre swim.

Aquatics Additional Programs ADVANCED LEADERSHIP Please Note: 100% attendance is required for all leadership courses. Check your calendar to ensure you are able to attend all classes. Refunds will not be issued. BRONZE STAR / BASIC FIRST AID - $95.50 Pre-requisite: Recommended age 12 Too young for Bronze Medallion? Get a head start by taking Bronze Star! Have lots of fun while learning first aid skills, life guarding techniques and swim training. Basic First Aid is included in the course. Dates: Course runs Thursdays 4:30- 6:00pm April 18th – June 13th BRONZE MEDALLION / EMERGENCY FIRST AID$163.25 (Fee Includes Manual) Pre-requisite:13 years of age (prior to exam) or Bronze Star. This course develops physical fitness, decision making and judgment skills for water rescue. First aid, CPR, tows, carries and releases are some of the skills covered. Emergency First Aid certification is included in the course. Candidates must be present for the last class (exam). Dates: Course runs Thursdays 4:00-6:30pm April 4th – June 13th BRONZE CROSS - $150.50 Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion, Emergency First Aid This course builds on skills learned in Bronze Medallion and teaches the difference between lifeguarding and lifesaving, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. Candidates must be present for the last class (exam). Dates: Course runs Thursdays 4:00-6:30pm April 4th – June 13th ASSISTANT WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE (AWSI) - $225.00 Pre-requisite: Bronze Cross, 15 years of age by the end of the course. 100% attendance is required. This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course. 8 Hours of assistant teaching is to be completed during the course, and is in addition to normal class time. Once certified, Assistant Water Safety Instructors have two years to become Water Safety Instructors. Dates: April 5, 6, 7 and June 7, 8, 9. Fridays 6-9, Saturday and Sunday 9-4. The Aquatic Supervisor Training course is geared to deck-level supervisory staff. This 10 hour course provides the knowledge and skills to manage a safe aquatic environment. ADDITIONAL AQUATIC PROGRAMS ADAPTED AQUATICS- $65.00 Adapted aquatics is for children and youth with a physical or developmental disability who need 1:1 support to feel comfortable in the water and to progress in their swimming skills. AQUA TEENS 1 / AQUA ADULTS 1 Develop comfort in the water through the attainment of basic flotation, movement and breathing skills. INTRODUCTORY LIFESAVING COURSES The Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for swimmers who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. The Swim Patrol program is an official training program of the Lifesaving Society – Canada’s Lifeguarding experts. These classes can be taken in conjunction with Red Cross Swim Kids levels. Classes: Sunday nights April 21st – June 16th 6:00-7:00pm ROOKIE PATROL - $79.00 Pre-requisite: Recommend completion of Swim Kids 7 Rookie Patrol features timed 100m swims, 350m workouts and swims with clothes. A work-hard play-hard approach develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart behavior. RANGER PATROL- $79.00 Ranger Patrol features a timed 200m swim, 100m fitness medley and support/carry of a 5 lb weight. Content is challenging but achievable with effort. Skill drills enhance capability in the water including a non-contact rescue. STAR PATROL - $79.00 Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Content features 300m swims, 600m workouts; swim with clothes; defense methods; support and carry 10lb weight. Scene assessment and a towing rescue are introduced. Star Patrol is excellent preparation for the Bronze Star Award.

VPSC ADVISORY BOARD The Centre is run by a volunteer Advisory Board of seven elected Centre Members and one appointed Council Representative. The Advisory Board acts a liaison between seniors and the Township of Centre Wellington and works with the Parks and Recreation Department to provide quality recreational opportunities for older adults. Meetings are held the first Monday of the month at 9:00 am. All members welcome. Minutes of the monthly meetings are posted at the Centre.

VPSC PROGRAM COMMITTEE Interested in providing your input into programs and events for older adults? This volunteer committee organizes special events and fundraisers for the Centre. We meet the first Monday of the month at 10:15 am. The group is always looking for new ideas and volunteers to help plan events.

SUPPORT SERVICES & TRANSPORTATION Seniors Transit Bus A bus runs on Tuesdays in the Elora/Salem area and on Wednesdays in the Fergus area for seniors. $2.00 one-way. The bus picks you up at home, drops you off at your destination and brings you back home. To use this service, you must contact the bus driver ahead of time. Wellington Transportation Service Through the joint efforts of many volunteer transportation service providers across Wellington County, transportation is available to assist seniors in accessing medical appointments, social programs, shopping, banking, etc. Volunteer drivers provide transportation. BUS TRIPS We are always in the process of organizing new bus trips for Victoria Park Seniors Centre. Some trips may not be listed if arranged after this publication went to print. Tuesday, April 23 @ 9:15 am Art & Hobby Show Do you have a hobby that you would like to show off to others? Do you draw, paint, wood carve, scrapbook, sculpt, make crafts, sew, knit, crochet, embroider, cross-stitch, stain glass, bunka (to name just a few)… Now is your chance to show off! Have a fun afternoon at the Centre displaying your art and handicrafts and talking to others about your hobby. No charge for a display table.
