For decades, residents of Centre Wellington have been able to enjoy skating outside in the winter at Bissell Park in Elora. The sight of children and families skating at this park in the winter has become the norm in our community. Since 1991, community volunteer Dave Alves has worked tirelessly to maintain this rink. A generation of children who played on this rink are now bringing their own children to enjoy this space. If you drive past the park late in an evening, or early morning you may notice Dave or dedicated assistant Timothy Grier clearing, patching or flooding this rink to have it in the best possible condition for around the clock use. David got his start on natural rinks as a child, helping his father maintain a community rink in Willowdale. He watched his father work at all hours of the night to maintain the ice for the community. Dave volunteered in our community for years coaching minor hockey, softball, ringette, and swimming and chaired one of the first school councils at Elora Public School. He and his wife Barb were citizens of the year in Elora in 1997. Now, Dave enjoys being able to help provide the opportunity for children of all ages play unstructured games together for free. He says its makes it all worthwhile when one of the kids take a moment to say thank you to himself or Tim for looking after the ice. Alves was quick to indicate that any of the people who look after natural rinks in the
township would appreciate the odd thank you for their work. While many skaters and parents help out with the shovelling, David says that the rink would be much more difficult without William Deboer at Deboer’s Equipment Limited donating the use of a tractor to throw snow out of the rink. Township staff Matt Tucker and Jeremy Machin are also very supportive of the volunteers at the Bissell Rink – Alves says. Over the past number of years Dave has been working on a vision for a new rink in Bissell Park, as the current rink space starts to show its age. The Elora Rockers and the Elora Lions club successfully applied for money from the MacDonald trust fund and are working with the Township of Centre Wellington to plan a new year-round multi-use surface for the community. The vision for an updated rink, skatepath and multi-use surface for other activities such as basketball, fitness and a stage for Riverfest should become a reality in 2020. This project will be made possible with the sweat equity community volunteers, and donations from many supporters in the community. The multi-use surface is a great accessible place for all ages of the community to gather and take part in unorganized free play. Alves says even he tries to get in on the games of shinny or shoot hoops from time to time, the kids are very kind to send a pass my way and not make me look too bad out there.

Swimming Lessons We offer most swimming levels at every lesson time frame. This format of programming allows parents to register multiple children at the same time. Most lessons are 45 minutes in length in order to provide additional practice time for swimmers. In order to coordinate all of our swimmers, instructors will teach multi-level classes.
i
In order to offer a wide range of lesson times we often combine our Swim Kids 7/8/9 & 10 swimming levels in one class. This winter we are programming some of these lessons with a smaller range of levels. Swim Kids 7/8 classes and Swim Kids 9/10 classes will run separately at the following times: Sundays 7:00-8:00pm, Mondays 7:00-8:00pm, Wednesdays 7:00-8:00pm
Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex, 519.846.9691 x 321 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff. Cancelled Classes Classes with low enrollment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid having the program you want cancelled. Registering early gives us a better idea of which programs are of interest to you. People often wait until the last minute to register only to find out that the program is full, or has been cancelled due to low registration. Registering early increases your program choices. If you are currently enrolled in lessons and concerned about registering in the wrong level you can transfer between levels if a change is needed. Check with your child’s instructor after lesson 8. Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up. Transfers You can transfer classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.
Private Lessons Private lessons run in the same nine lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for semi private lessons you can register one child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You will need to contact the Sportsplex to register the second child. For more information call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services, 519.846.9691 x 321. Change Rooms Children 6 years of age and older must use gender specific change rooms, or the family change room. Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor who oversees all lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions. Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children, please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, he or she may not have the skills required to be successful in the next level.
Swim Lesson Report Cards Your child will receive a report card booklet that will track his or her progress throughout the swimming levels. Please bring your child’s report card to their first class and give it to their instructor. If your child is not present for the last swim lesson you can pick up their report card at the front administration desk at the Sportsplex. Swimming with Clothes The Red Cross includes “Swim with clothes” components to lessons to make swimmers more prepared in case of an unexpected fall into water. During our 6th and 9th (or final) lessons all swimmers are reminded to wear clothes over top of their bathing suits. The following clothing is recommended. Pre-School and Swim Kids 1-4 T-Shirt and Shorts Swim Kids 5-10 Long Pants, Long sleeve shirts If you forget clothes, or miss the class these skills are included for the experience only. They are not required to complete the level.
