COVER
Recognizing Susan Harrop, Fergus Fall Fair Volunteer of 35 years! This is the 183rd year of the Fergus Fall Fair and the theme is “Autumn Skies and Pumpkin Pies”. Hundreds of volunteers are involved in planning and running the Fergus Fall Fair each year. Susan Harrop is one of many dedicated volunteers who plan and run this spectacular community event. Susan has served as an Associate Director for 15 years, on the Executive for 8 years, and was president for 2001 & 2002. She currently is in charge of the setup of the exhibit Hall (Co-chairs the Handicraft Committee) and also judges handicraft competitions at other fairs in Southern Ontario. Susan was hesitant to be recognized this year as she emphasized that many other volunteers contribute a significant amount of time and energy into running the fall fair. Planning takes place throughout the year. Volunteers start setting up on the Monday prior to the fair by preparing and arranging props both inside and outside the buildings for all the events. Over 100 volunteers help in the running of events over the weekend. Susan was involved in the change of venue from Victoria Park to the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in 1997. The larger venue has enabled the volunteers to acquire larger entertainment venues and activities for all ages such as sheep herding, dog demonstrations and a classic car show, just to name a few. Long-term events and attractions such as Truck and Tractor pulls and the midway have been a staple for a number of years. The Agriculture awareness area has been expanded and includes large tents of educational exhibits and farm animals. For the younger visitors, the “Farmer for a Day” features an interactive site which is a fun series of activity stations that is a must see. Susan emphasizes the important contribution of all of the volunteers, including board members who work throughout the year. For anyone who would like to get involved in any volunteer capacity with the Fergus Agricultural Society or exhibit in any of the numerous categories, please go to their Website at www.fergusfallfair.ca.

Swimming Lessons We offer most swimming levels at every lesson time frame. This format of programming allows parents to register multiple children at the same time. Most lessons are 45 minutes in length in order to provide additional practice time for swimmers. In order to coordinate all of our swimmers, instructors will teach multi-level classes.
i
In order to offer a wide range of lesson times we often combine our Swim Kids 7/8/9 & 10 swimming levels in one class. This Fall we are programming some of these lessons with a smaller range of levels. Swim Kids 7/8 classes and Swim Kids 9/10 classes will run separately at the following times: Sundays 7:00-8:00pm, Mondays 7:00-8:00pm, and Wednesday 7:00-8:00pm
Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex, 519.846.9691 x 338 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff. Cancelled Classes Registering early gives us a better idea of which programs are of interest to you. People often wait until the last minute to register only to find out that the program is full, or has been cancelled due to low registration. Registering early increases your program choices. If you are currently enrolled in lessons and concerned about registering in the wrong level you can transfer between levels if a change is needed. Check with your child’s instructor after lesson 8. Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up. Transfers You can transfer classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.
Page 20
Private Lessons Private lessons run in the same nine lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. When registering online for semi private lessons you can register one child online which will reserve the lesson for you. You will need to contact the Sportsplex to register the second child. For more information call the Aquatics Admin Assistant, 519.846.9691 x 338. Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor who oversees all lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress he or she is available to answer your questions. Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children, please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, he or she may not have the skills required to be successful in the next level.
Change Rooms Children 6 years of age and older must use gender specific change rooms, or the family change room. Swim Lesson Report Cards Your child will receive a report card booklet that will track his or her progress throughout the swimming levels. Please bring your child’s report card to their first class and give it to his or her instructor. If your child is not present for the last swim lesson you can pick up their report card at the front administration desk at the Sportsplex. Swimming with Clothes The Red Cross includes “Swim with clothes” components to lessons to make swimmers more prepared in case of an unexpected fall into water. During our 6th and 9th (or final) lessons all swimmers are reminded to wear clothes over top of their bathing suits. The following clothing is recommended. Pre-School and Swim Kids 1-4 – T-Shirt and Shorts Swim Kids 5-10 – Long Pants, Long sleeve shirts If you forget clothes, or miss the class these skills are included for the experience only.
