Minto assists Mapleton on Master Fire Plan By Aryn Strickland MAPLETON - Fire chiefs Rick Richardson and Chris Harrow, of Mapleton and Minto respectively, presented Mapleton council with a joint fire plan established by the two departments on Oct. 22. The in-house fire master plan, a first for the Mapleton department, includes updates - most to take place within the next five years - in the following areas: administration and communication, public education, fire prevention, apparatus and equipment, training, fire suppression, health and wellness, shared services and IT and infrastructure. “The process is a very different one than you will see in the consultation-based one and other fire master plans you see out there, Harrow told Mapleton council. The Minto fire department is no stranger to the in-house approach, having established master plans internally in 2012 and 2018. That’s one of the reasons Minto is assisting Mapleton with its fire master plan. “The way that we approach this is this is truly a plan that is collaboration between the firefighters and management and it brings forward that collaboration through the recommendations, said Harrow. “A lot of the recommendations ... are specific in nature but that’s because that’s
what the firefighters ... truly believe in and ... with them and management working together, it’s a truly workable plan we believe. Administration Among the Mapleton Fire Rescue changes listed under administration in the first two years are: reviewing/updating standard operating guides yearly to ensure they are current; - ensuring internal meetings include a structures agenda and records process; - either updating or creating a new standard operating guide to include more severe repercussions for firefighters that do not do truck checks or attend enough training; and - going through a rebranding process to ensure its identity better reflects the values of the department. Recommendations for years three to four include: - distributing minutes of officer meetings to firefighters to increase internal communication; and - investigating casual clothing options for firefighters and e-commerce distribution platforms. Fire prevention Changes outlined for the first four years include: - exploring partnerships with Mapleton businesses to increase fire prevention within downtown cores; and - possibly creating a task force to ensure proper preplan completion for all iden-

tified buildings in Mapleton and coordinating walkthroughs of buildings requiring more than a one-station response from neighbouring departments. Apparatus and equipment The apparatus and equipment section of the plan includes the following changes to be implemented over the next five years or more: - allocating a portion of the budget to each station to use annually for updating and acquiring equipment; - creating an orientation program for new recruits to learn about equipment maintenance and inventory on all apparatus; - discontinuing the use of separate colours for each station and instead having one colour of bunker gear for all members; and - investigating the viability of purchasing off-road utility vehicles to enhance the fleet, such as motor boats, utility vehicles etc. Other changes include: - diversifying training instructors to better utilize knowledge within the department; - expanding the trainers list to include those with specialized knowledge on various subjects; - implementing an onscene smoking policy and an in-apparatus no-smoking policy; and - creating programs for spouses and kids to increase understanding of the job.

Council can’t act on request for permanent four-way stop By Patrick Raftis MINTO – Town council declined to act on a Clifford resident’s suggestion to create a permanent four-way stop at the south end of the village. Jim Measures, who lives at the corner of Highway 9 and Park Street in Clifford, wrote to council requesting that a temporary four-way stop at the corner, set up as a short-term effort to slow traffic during construction, be made permanent. In a letter received by
council at the Nov. 5 meeting, Measures cited several reasons, “all related to safety, for the request. “It serves to slow down traffic passing through the village, stated Measures. “Admittedly few cars actually come to a full stop, but almost 100 per cent of them slow down. We have on occasion seen cars going through Clifford as though the driver thought that he/she was on the 401 highway. Measures also contends the stop allows safer left hand turns.
“We are particularly concerned that tanker trucks carrying liquefied natural gas daily make the turn from the Drew road to go up through Clifford,â€? he stated. “If a speeder should hit one of these, the resulting explosion could be devastating, not to mention possibly taking out our house, and perhaps us with it.â€? Measures also noted Park Street and Mill Street are part of a popular walking route used by many local residents and the four-way stop SEE REQUEST Âť 2
County agrees to extend 70km/h zone at eastern entrance to Palmerston By Patrick Raftis GUELPH – County council has agreed to an extension of the 70 kilometre per hour zone on Wellington Road 123 east of Palmerston. A staff report from engineer Don Kudo states a review determined the 50km/h speed limit sign should be relocated an additional 50 metres east from its current location, away from a cluster of signs. In addition, a TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) posted speed limit review was completed showing an extension of the existing 70km/h zone to a point

550m east of Wellington Road 5 (Toronto Street) is warranted. The changes require a revision to the current consolidated speed limit bylaw, the report notes. “I do drive into Palmerston periodically and have noticed quite a few changes to the community, particularly on that side, so I’m glad we are able to support making some changes there to help with traffic control, councillor Andy Lennox, who chairs the county’s roads committee, told council on Oct. 31. Minto Mayor George Bridge pointed out the change was prompted in part by expansion at the TG Minto
automotive plant located at the intersection of Main Street (Wellington Road 123) and Toronto Street. “As you know TG Minto has put a $4.9-million operational addition onto the side of their building and they’re going to be building vehicles for the Alliston (Honda) plant so a lot of the stuff, we anticipate, is going to mean trucks coming down the road, Bridge explained. Council approved a roads committee recommendation to revise the consolidated speed limit bylaw and signage on Wellington Road 123 as recommended in the staff report.

Palmerston Legion hosts euchre PALMERSTON - The Palmerston Legion Ladies Auxiliary hosted a euchre on Nov. 4. Joe Riff and Earl Marquardt placed first. June Metzger and Mary Noble came in second. Al Dobson and Norm Dobson placed
third. Hidden number winners were Leonard Noble and Ron Noble. Joan Rising and Garry Zettler recorded the most lone hands. The next euchre will be on Dec. 2 at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome.
Councillor Judy Dirksen suggested the letter be referred to staff for a report. However, Mayor George Bridge noted the issue had already been discussed recently by the town’s department heads. “It’s pretty straightforward. We can’t do it,” said Bridge. Roads and drainage manager Mike McIsaac explained, “In order to keep a four-way stop there, it would be an improper use of a fourway stop.
“The traffic doesn’t warrant this use; and it would need to be approved by the MTO if it was to stay.” McIsaac added he would bring a report back to council if desired. “I think that makes the answer public,” Dirksen replied. Bridge said the town could consider placing one of its mobile speed warning signs near the intersection when the temporary four-way stop is taken down as a means to calm traffic in the area.

Bethel also scored another goal with a shot by Garrett Martin, assisted by Matt Martin and Tony Martin. The third period produced a lot of action. Bethel kept in the game scoring twice. But Listowel denied the tying attempt scoring three goals to claim the win. Trevor Kuepfer, Braeden Gingerich, and Shayne Martin scored the Listowel goals, assisted by Mike Gingrich, Greg Bauman, Phil Shantz, Travis Kuepfer and Trevor Kuepfer. Laverne Metzger scored the two Bethel goals to complete his hat trick, assisted on both goals by Garrett Martin.

CRA hosts annual event to open arena in Clifford By Bonnie Whitehead CLIFFORD - Members of the Clifford Recreation Association (CRA) welcomed the public back to the Clifford arena on Oct. 19 for the annual season opener event. Frank Rotarians Phil and Dickinson Baumgarten barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers for Sheila Dickinson to carry to the table, where Karen Dowler and Dana Speers served them to hungry skaters and arena supporters. The arena offers skating, figure skating, mom and tots skating, grassroots hockey, and curling. The food booth is open, offering a variety of beverages, candy, chips, treat bags, and food from the grill and fryer. They welcome new volunteers to take the training and work at the food booth for regular afternoons and evenings and special events. A draw was held for $100 gift certificates towards Clifford Arena ice rentals. The winners were Michelle Burnett, Sarah Hummel, Kelsey Richardson, Emma Ellis and Trish Palmer. “We all continue to work to keep our local arena up and running, but we could not do it without the ongoing support of our terrific little community,” CRA officials state.

TO THE EDITOR Club appreciates support Dear Editor: The Optimist Club of Moorefield’s first annual Moore-Field-Drags on Oct. 28 was an overwhelming success! We had over 600 people through the gates and attracted racers from all over Ontario, including Ottawa, Sudbury and French River. We had a number of great door prize giveaways including a 55” Sony TV donated by Precision Kaster Auto won by Eliza Dippel and a Stihl weed wacker donated by G&H small engines won by Jamie Buczynski. We would like to thank Neil and Barb Driscoll for the use of their property. They were extremely accommodating to help ensure the event was a success. Thanks to all of you, the greatest community in Ontario. One of the biggest driving forces for our club’s success is the support from our community members. That support is greatly appreciated. Thank you to our sponsors! Our club is extremely fortunate to have the backing of so many kind sponsors who recognize the importance of these types of community events and want to continually contribute and be a part of them. We would also like to recognize our complete team of volunteers. Led by the Optimist Club of Moorefield, this was a collaborative effort which also involved individual members from the Lake Conestoga Snowmobiler’s club along with spouses and children, and a number of local youth who helped out.

A ‘Hollywood Christmas’ coming to Harriston
HARRISTON - Santa Claus will make his official 2019 visit to Harriston on Nov. 23. The theme of this year’s parade is “Hollywood Christmas.” The parade will form at John Street and William Street West at 6pm. At 7pm the parade will travel down Louise Street to Elora Street, from Elora Street, turning left onto Young Street and dispersing at the arena. Immediately following the parade, Santa will return to the Harriston Firehall, where the public is welcome to enjoy hot chocolate and other treats.
Once again, the Harriston Association Firefighters will be collecting non-perishable food items along the parade route and at the firehall for the local food bank. Firefighters are also collecting monetary donations to support the parade. “The generous support from the community is what makes the parade so successful year after year,” fire department officials note. Cars, bikes and walkers are getting ready for a Hollywood Christmas Parade. For more information contact Mitch Loos at loos.mitch@gmail.com.

The following is part of a series - My Father’s Heart in the 10 Commandments. My Father’s Heart in the Tenth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. (Exodus 20:17) Desiring What Does Not
Belong to You Misery comes whenever you desire or pursue what does not belong to you. It comes when you desire, or take pleasure in any type of fantasy. This may take the form of wanting the marriage that someone else apparently has, or comparing your life to those portrayed in movies or TV shows, or following the exploits and highlights of other people as portrayed in media like Facebook. It comes when you value the opinions of those who
have nothing invested in you. This happens when you downplay or ignore the counsel of your elders or other significant people, people with whom you have a relationship and to whom you are accountable. The pull of wealth, power or prestige is more powerful than the advice of those who love you and are invested in you. It comes when you praise others at the expense of those closest to you or compare the acts of those you love with those of others. Your child, spouse, parent, etc. hides in the shadows as you hail the praises of those you admire. It comes when you demonstrate inordinate, ungoverned, or selfish desire for anything. This happens whenever you justify spend-
ing money on a new gadget or an activity you enjoy while, at the same time, challenging your spouse’s need for a new pair of shoes. It comes when you desire something that is forbidden. This applies when you crave, enjoy or seek out the attention of another person other than your spouse. Working or playing with them makes you feel good. It comes when your house, car, job or anything else you own seems to be always second rate. You are always on the lookout for something better, newer or more stimulating. I Am Your Bounty I, your heavenly Father, have given you your house. It is your home and it is holy unto me. It is your place of
refuge and the place where those most precious to you are nurtured. It is a holy place. It is a place of love and richness. There is no home like your home. Your spouse is the love of your life. He/she is my gift to you. He/she is more than capable of complimenting you than any other. Ask of me and I will open your eyes and ignite your desires again for him/her. Your children are gems. They are a treasure-house of blessing. They are rich in giftings and knowledge, and they will grow up to become a rich blessing to society. Celebrate them daily, compliment them often, and set aside unhindered moments for their pursuits, for what you invest in them I will multiply a hun-
dred-fold. You are rich in everything. Your ten-year-old Ford truck is a transportation wonder, your little house is a place of refuge, safety and provision for many and your neighbour is abundantly blessed to be able to borrow your old Canadian Tire wheelbarrow to haul topsoil for his garden. Not only do you have all you need, you have abundance. You have more than enough and plenty to go around … and to go around again. I have made you rich in resources and influence. You rule your world and make it rich. Out of your fulness you will bring others into fulness, and out of your completeness you will make many complete.
