All registrations will be processed on a first come first serve basis. Program Cancellations: Register early to avoid disappointment. Delayed registration may result in program cancellation. If your class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, you may transfer to another program, subject to availability, or receive a full refund.

Payment fees: We accept cheques, money orders, cash, debit, Visa or Master Card. We have calculated the HST and included it in our fees where applicable. There is a $45.00 fee for NSF cheques. Diapers As a courtesy to all we request and require that all children who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk. The Sportsplex stocks swim diapers in infant, child, youth, and adult sizes. Feeding your children before swimming: Please refrain from feeding your child a large meal prior to swimming. Free Public Swimming NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD PUBLIC SWIM will provide free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month. Photos / Videos Patrons wishing to use video cameras or other photographic devices, including camera phones and personal digital assistants during registered or supervised Township programs may take photographs only of children / patrons in their care. Every attempt must be made to limit or eliminate other patrons from being filmed in the background. Private Rentals A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Rental times are available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00pm5:00pm. Call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519843-2800) for more information. Spectators Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted. Strollers Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left outside of the change rooms. Strollers are not to be on the pool deck. Swimming Lesson information: Cancelled Classes Classes with low enrolment will be cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment. Deck Supervisor During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor that oversees all the lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions. Family Lessons We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons on Monday and Friday evenings called “Family Lessons”. You can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes. Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers. Missed Classes If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up. Not sure what level to register in? NEW FOR THE FALL We’ve made some changes for the Fall session. Please look through the aquatic section for more details. Swimming lessons: We have continued to run two sessions of swimming lessons in the fall. There will be a 9 week session starting in September and a second 9 week session starting in Mid November. Registration for both sessions starts August 22nd. Swim Changes: • We have added Deep Water Running and Water Walking times in the pool during the morning on weekdays. • We have an Annual Family Swim pass. This is valid for all drop in swims (lane, public, family, adult leisure, special needs, parent & tot). The cost is $365 / year. • During Friday evening public swims the slide will be open from 6:30-7:30. Aquafit Class Change: Pre-registered Deep Water classes have been added on Monday and Wednesday from 5:30-6:15.

Swim Lesson Progressions Did you know your child may repeat a level multiple times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level. Swim Lesson Report Cards The Township has updated our report card system. Your child will receive a booklet that will track their progress throughout their swimming levels. Please bring your child’s report card to their first class and give it to their instructor. If your child is not present for the last swim lesson you can pick up their report card

Adult : Child Ratio: N/A Band Colour: GREEN Each ratio indicates the maximum number of children that one responsible person (aged 12 or older) is able to supervise. Parent/guardian must be in proper bathing attire, in the water, actively participating within arms reach at all times.

High-Risk Participants High-risk participants must be in a ratio of 1:1. High-risk participants are defined as those who have a condition or illness that may put them at risk in an aquatic environment (e.g. frequent seizures, fainting conditions, etc) and those who are unable to control behaviour or impulses and require direct supervision.

Children under the age of 10 years may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is at least 12 years of age and are responsible for their direct supervision with a maximum of 2 children for each parent or guardian. The ratio of non-swimmer to parents or guardian may be increased for children aged 6-9 to a maximum of four bathers to one parent or guardian if life jackets are worn by all non-swimmers in their charge. Children between the ages of 6 & 9 who are swimmers (pass the facility swim test) may be admitted to the swimming pool unaccompanied. Parents/guardian must be present for the swim test, and remain in the facility for the duration of the swim.

SWIM TEST CRITERIA Front swim 6 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 12 meters, tread water 20 seconds, front swim 6 meters. Must make an attempt at over arm recovery with a near horizontal body position. Lifeguards reserve the right to have any swimmer complete the swim test to determine competency to use the deep area of the pool. Whirlpool: due to the high temperature, the whirlpool is for use by patrons 16 years of age and older.

SWIM TEST CARDS Patrons that have successfully completed the swim test will receive a “Swim Test Card�. Upon future visits to the facility children can present the swim test card to reception staff when paying for the swims and will receive the appropriate colour wristband. A parent / caregiver must be in the facility during the swim. If you forget your swim test card you will be required to complete the swim test again. If at any time a patron with a swim test card is unable to complete the swim test their swim test card will be revoked. Fees include HST. Patrons with a Swim or Aquafit Membership receive a 3 month locker rental FREE. (Deposit still applies). Please note lockers are available to rent on a monthly basis. A $20 refundable deposit is required. Lockers are $5 a month. Memberships can be purchased for shorter time frames, (1, 2, 3, 4 month periods). Please inquire at the Sportsplex for costs.

SWIM DESCRIPTIONS Lane Swim The pool is open for swimmers of any age to swim lengths. For Lane Swims in bold only one or two lanes are available for lane swimming. Get in shape by swimming and join the “In motion” Swim Challenge! For more details ask our staff at the Sportsplex! Public Swim Come enjoy time in the pool. All the pools and the waterslide are open. Admission policy is in effect for all swims. Friday evenings the waterslide will be closing at 7:30pm.

Family Swim Enjoy time in the pool as a family. All the pools are open, the waterslide will open at 2:00pm. Children are to be accompanied by an adult. The last 2 hours will be combined with public swimming.

Parent and Tot Swim Parents or caregivers can come and swim with their children in our leisure pool (the slide does not run). Children are to be accompanied by an adult. These swims are combined with our Special Needs Swims. Please note, during some morning swims the pool may be shared with other programs.

Special Needs Swim This swim takes place in our leisure pool (the slide does not run). Our leisure pool is maintained at 92 degrees. Caregivers volunteering their time to help a person with special needs are admitted free. Adults, seniors, and children are welcome. These swims are combined with parent and tot swims. Please note, during some morning swims the pool may be shared with other programs.

Adult Leisure Swim Adults can come to enjoy “unstructured” swimming in the main pool. Two lanes are designated for those wanting to swim lengths. The Whirlpool is available for these swims.

AQUAFIT DESCRIPTIONS General Aquafit Use the resistance of water to assist in a quality low impact workout. The option of deep water aquafit will be made available to those interested in it.

Deep Water Aquafit Enjoy the benefits of an aquafit workout with no impact on joints. Floatation belts are provided, comfort in deep water is required.

Arthritis Aquafit This class is specifically designed for those dealing with Arthritis. These classes are taught in our leisure pool. Exercising in warm water can maintain and improve your mobility through range of motion exercises.

Rehabilitation Aquafit These classes, taught in our leisure pool can assist with recovery, increase flexibility and range of motion faster and with less stress on the body than a typical post rehabilitation exercise class.

Diaperfit A pre registered aquafit class designed for parents and their babies (babies must have established neck support). The first 30 minutes is an Aquafit class in the main pool for the parent. (Babies float in a specially designed boat beside their parent). The last 15 minutes is a structured parent & tot class in the leisure pool. Participants need to register for this program.

Swimmers will further develop their front and back glide with kick, as well as swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swimming distance to 10 metres. Safety skills include jumping into deep-water and performing surface support for 10 seconds unassisted, recognizing when a swimmer needs help and using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) in deep water.

9. WHALE

(3 - 6 YEARS) Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres unassisted, demonstrate basic floats by themselves and increase their distance on front and back glide. Assisted front swim and rollover glide are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

On Thursday afternoons, Monday nights and Fridays lessons are run in our “FAMILY LESSON” format. All levels are offered at the same time. Swimming levels will be combined and most lessons will be 45 minutes long. For ONLINE registration, these special classes will have a “family” designation beside them. Swimmers will learn the sitting dive and increase their distance on front and back glide with kick. Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on submersion, front and back floats, front, back and side glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5 metre swim.

Swimmers learn and complete 15 metres of back crawl, demonstrate 15 metres of front crawl while further developing their technique and are introduced to whip kick on their backs. Swimmers build deep water confidence through stride dives and a minute of treading water. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50 metre swim.

This level is an introduction to breast stroke and feetfirst surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

This level refines front crawl as swimmers swim 25 metres with a focus on hand entry and breathing. Swimmers perform 25 metres of back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll. The level introduces elementary backstroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75 metre swim.

This level refines the front and back crawls as swimmers perform 100 metres of each. Elementary back stroke and breast stroke are refined. Swimmers are challenged to travel using just their legs for support for 3 minutes. They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and selfrescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

This level builds skills and endurance for the front and back crawls as swimmers perform 50 metres of each. Elementary back stroke technique is developed through a 25 metres swim and whip kick on the front is introduced. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entries. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150 metre swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance. Swimmers will complete 100 metres each of front and back crawl, 50 metres each of breast stroke and elementary back stroke and are introduced to a 25 metres sidestroke swim. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the vertical dolphin kick and a 500 metre swim.

INTRODUCTORY LIFESAVING COURSES The Canadian Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for kids who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. The Swim Patrol program is an official training program of the Lifesaving Society – Canada’s Lifeguarding experts. These classes can be taken in conjunction with Red Cross Swim Kids levels. Classes: Wednesday nights. Fall Session 1 - September 12th – November 14th 4:00-5:00pm (No Classes on October 31st) Fall Session 2 - November 21st – January 30th 4:30-5:30pm (No Classes Dec. 26th and Jan.2nd ). ROOKIE PATROL - $78.00 Pre-requisite: Recommend completion of Swim Kids 7 Rookie Patrol features timed 100m swims, 350m workouts and swims with clothes. A work-hard play-hard approach develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart behavior. RANGER PATROL- $78.00 Ranger Patrol features a timed 200m swim, 100m fitness medley and support/carrying a 5 lb weight. Content is challenging but achievable with effort. Skill drills enhance capability in the water including a non-contact rescue STAR PATROL - $78.00 Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Content features 300m swims, 600m workouts; swim with clothes; defense methods; support and carry 10lb weight. Scene assessment and a towing rescue are introduced. Star Patrol is excellent preparation for the Bronze Star Award.

We are looking for older adults to help us! This fitness and education program engages and connects older adults with youth (grade 7’s) within the Centre Wellington community. Together, you will participate in a fitness class, snack preparation and healthy eating while sharing, listening and learning from each others’ experiences. These activities assist in understanding ageism and stereotypes to bridge the gap between the generations. Join us any Tuesday morning in October or November (except Oct. 30) for a FREE and FUN intergenerational fitness program. VPSC ADVISORY BOARD The Centre is run by a volunteer Advisory Board of seven elected Centre members and one appointed Council Representative. The Advisory Board acts a liaison between the seniors and the Township of Centre

Wellington and works with the Parks and Recreation Department to provide quality recreational opportunities for older adults. Meetings are held the first Monday of the month at 9:00 am. All members welcome. Minutes of the monthly meetings are posted at the Centre. VPSC PROGRAM COMMITTEE Interested in providing your input into programs and events for older adults? This volunteer committee organizes special events and fundraisers for the Centre. We meet the first Monday of the month at 10:15 am. The group is always looking for new ideas and volunteers to help plan events. REGISTRATION • Registration for Fall 2012 programs begins Wed. Aug. 22 at 8:30 am. • All programs offered at the Seniors Centre require pre-registration, unless specified as a “drop-in” activity group (which do not require registration). OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES & TRANSPORTATION Seniors Transit Bus A bus runs on Tuesdays in the Elora/Salem area and on Wednesdays in the Fergus area for seniors. $2.00 oneway. The bus picks you up at home, drops you off at your destination and brings you back home. To use this service, you must contact the bus driver ahead of time. Wellington Transportation Service Through the joint efforts of many volunteer transportation service providers across Wellington County, transportation is available to assist seniors in accessing medical appointments, social programs, shopping, banking, etc. Volunteer drivers provide transportation. The Remote Assistance Tool can help! Using this tool and with your permission, your family member/friend can view and share control of your computer to resolve your computer problem remotely. Remote Assistance allows your helper to see what you are dealing with and with permission can make changes to your computer too. Intergenerational Program – Fall 2012 We are looking for older adults to volunteer for this program. This fitness and education program engages and connects older adults with youth (grade 7’s) within the Centre Wellington community. Together, you will participate in a fitness class, snack preparation and learn about healthy eating while sharing, listening and learning from each others’ experiences. With this program we hope to assist in understanding ageism and stereotypes to bridge the gap between the generations. Join us any Tuesday morning in October or November (except Oct. 30) for a FREE and FUN intergenerational fitness program. Let us know if you would like to help! • Cooking for a Crowd! Do you enjoy cooking for a big group (approx. 40-60 people)? We need volunteers who love to cook to help with our twice monthly fundraising homemade Wednesday lunches.
