HARMONIZED SALES TAX (HST) IMPACT ON REGISTERED ADULT PROGRAMS EFFECTIVE MAY 1, 2010 In response to the provincial government’s introduction of a new harmonized sales tax (HST) effective July 1, 2010, Parks and Recreation has made the necessary adjustments to applicable program fees beginning with 2010 summer programs. HST will replace the GST charged previously on registered programs for 14 years of age and older. These programs include: aquatic advanced lifesaving, aqua fitness, fitness and other adult training programs. Fees for these summer programs have been published in this guide with HST included. HST becomes effective July 1, 2010. However, the government has identified May 1 to July 1, 2010 as a transitional period to changeover from charging GST to HST. If you register after May 1, 2010 for an adult summer program with a start date of July 1, 2010 or later, HST will apply. All spring adult programs fees are published with GST included only. HST does not apply to spring adult programs as they all end before July 1, 2010. For more information on the new HST tax, please visit Ontario Ministry of Revenue at www.rev.gov.on.ca or Canada Revenue Agency at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.

Date: June 26. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Fergus Grand Theatre is one of the locations for this year’s Door’s Open in Centre Wellington. Here is an opportunity to visit this historic site. In January of 1928, a barn stood at what is now 244 St Andrew St in Fergus. It was built as a stable for the customers of the Commercial Hotel, some 8 decades earlier. Just six months later on Tuesday, August 28, the head of MGM Louis B. Mayer sent a telegram to Fergus. It was a wish for great success to Sam Fardella who had replaced the barn with a modern movie theatre. Speaking at the opening were Dr. Abraham Groves and Col. J.J. Craig and Reeve Moffat who gave the official opening address. 82 years later the Fergus Grand Theatre Volunteers will be on hand to greet you, answer your questions and conduct tours of the facilities.

DOORS OPEN

Summer at the Fergus Grand Theatre The Fergus Grand Theatre will be closed for a major portion of the summer undergoing renovations. Through a Federal Cultural Spaces Grant, the facility will be installing new seating, painting the auditorium and upgrading the lighting system.

aquatics General Pool Information: Did you know....? Private Rentals

Private Lessons

• A private pool rental is a great way to celebrate a birthday, or host a special event. Rental times are available Saturday and Sundays between 4:00pm-5:00pm. Call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services (519-843-2800) for more information.

• Private lessons run in the same 9 lesson format as all other lessons. If this doesn’t fit your schedule, we do offer “one time” private lessons. For more information call the Supervisor of Aquatic Services, (519) 843-2800.

Strollers

• Looking for gift ideas? Why not purchase swim tickets or passes for Aquatic programs? Inquire by phone (519) 843-2800.

• Due to their size, and the possibility of restricting change room exits, unattended strollers are to be left in the area by the pool office. We apologize for the inconvenience, however we need to ensure all exits are maintained free of obstructions in case an evacuation is required.

Deck Supervisor • During swimming lessons there is a deck supervisor that oversees all the lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress they are available to answer your questions.

Spectators • Spectators are welcome to watch from the spectator gallery. Viewing lessons from the pool deck is not permitted.

Volunteer • Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer? There are volunteer opportunities available in the Aquatic Centre. We prefer volunteers with some aquatic background (Bronze Cross or Assistant water safety instructors). If interested please call the Sportsplex, (519) 843-2800 and speak with the Supervisor of Aquatic Services.

Gift Ideas

Swim Lesson Progressions: • Did you know your child may repeat a level 3 or 4 times before completing all of the requirements successfully? When registering your children please ensure you register them in the correct level. Swimming skills build from one level to the next. If your child hasn’t completed a level, they will not have the skills they need for the next level.

Not sure what level to register in? Please call the Sportsplex (519) 843-2800 to arrange a time for a FREE SKILLS ASSESSMENT by one of our Aquatic Staff.

Missed Classes • If you miss a scheduled lesson we are unable to make them up.

Transfers • You can switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if there is space available.

cancelled approximately 1 week before programs start. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Diapers •As a courtesy to all we request and require that all children who are not toilet trained wear specially designed swimming diapers. The Aquatic Centre has both disposable and reusable swim diapers available at our administration desk.

Other Tips: If possible, please refrain from feeding your child a large meal prior to their swimming lesson.

• “Family Lessons” Do you have difficulty coordinating all of your children’s swimming lessons? We offer an alternative format of swimming lessons called “Family Lessons”. We offer all swimming levels at the same time. You can coordinate all your children’s lessons’ to take place at the same time. PLEASE NOTE: In order to coordinate this, instructors will teach multi level classes. Your children will likely be in a split class. Lessons will be 45 minutes in length to provide additional practice time for swimmers.

Free Public Swimming • NEWDON INDUSTRIES LTD PUBLIC SWIM provides free admission to the first 40 children and youth entering the 2:00 pm to 3:55 pm public swim on the first Saturday of each month.

HARMONIZED SALES TAX (HST) IMPACT ON REGISTERED PROGRAMS In response to the provincial government’s introduction of a new harmonized sales tax (HST) effective July 1, 2010, Parks & Recreation has made the necessary adjustments to the applicable program fees beginning with 2010 summer programs. HST will replace the GST charged previously on registered programs. Fees for these summer programs have been published in this guide with HST included. HST becomes effective July 1, 2010, however, the government has identified May 1 to July 1, 2010 as a transitional period to changeover from charging GST to HST. If you register after May 1, 2010 for an adult summer program with a start date of July 1, 2010 or later, HST will apply. For more information on the new HST tax, please visit Ontario Ministry of Revenue at www.re.gov.on.ca or Canada Revenue Agency at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.

The programs offered are tailored to individuals 55 years of age and older; however all registered programs are open to any adult looking to develop new skills and friendships and focus on staying active. Victoria Park Seniors Centre, which officially opened its doors in June 1992, is a municipal recreation facility operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the Township of Centre Wellington. Our goal is to support active, healthy lifestyles for older adults through an extensive range of social, health, recreational and educational programs.
