Henry piloted two-year-old pacing filly Even Louder to a 1:57 score in the third $22,800 division for McIntosh of Windsor and his partners Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington, Deo Volente Farms LLC and Cool Cat Racing Inc. of Flemington, NJ. Henry and McIntosh combine for Grassroots double Grassroots debut by half a length in 1:56.4. “She’s a great big filly. She’s kind of like a six foot six kid in Grade 8, and I look for her to be much better next year, but she’s improving every start, so who knows what might happen this fall,” said McIntosh of the daughter of Bettors Delight and West Of L A. “She’s a big filly - she’s going to be over 16 hands and kind of rangy. Once she gets muscle on that frame, then she’s going to be serious.
I hope so anyway.” Henry, who lives in Arthur, added, “She definitely

ELORA – Driver Trevor Henry and trainer Bob McIntosh teamed up to win two of five Grassroots divisions at Grand River Raceway on Sept. 9. Henry and McIntosh captured the first $23,150 twoyear-old pacing filly division with Miss L A, who powered up the outer lane to take on early leader Tuggingoncredit and then dug in down the stretch to hold off fan favourite Queso Relleno and Trizzle Trazzle. McIntosh shares ownership of Miss L A with Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. of Leamington, Deo Volente Farms LLC and Cool Cat Racing Inc. of Flemington, NJ. The Hall of Fame horseman also bred Miss L A and her illustrious siblings; Somewhere in L A and L A Delight, who have both amassed $1.7 million in their racing careers, and current
three-year-old Ontario Sires Stakes star Sunny Dee. “She’s different than the rest of her siblings,” McIntosh said, who lives in Windsor. “It’s hard to think of what she’s going to do, because she’s got a big motor, I just think she’ll be a better threeyear-old.” After settling for second with So Delightful in the second division, won by Coco Beach De Vie and driver Jody Jamieson in 1:57, Henry and McIntosh were back in the CONTINUED ON > 28

winner’s circle with Even Louder. Starting from Post One Henry sent Even Louder straight to the front and controlled the tempo through fractions of :27.1, :56 and 1:26 on their way to a 1:57 personal best. Fan favourite Ms Brampton Beast was one length back in second and Chasethecloudsaway rounded out the top three. “The thing with that filly, she’s maybe not the fastest filly in Canada, but she’s the most honest filly. “And Trevor gave her a hell of a drive, because he had them all kind of where he wanted them at the threequarter pole. “That was a great drive,” said McIntosh, who bred and owns the daughter of Thinking Out Loud.
“When he hit the half in :56 I went ‘Whoa’, but he got the next quarter in 30 seconds and he had them all stacked up and where he wanted them. “She’s the most honest filly you’d ever draw a line over, she’s really good that way and super gaited, good mannered, but great drive too.” Mach My Kiss and driver Doug McNair delivered the quickest mile of the five Grassroots divisions, tracking Mystic Shadow through fractions of :27.1, :56.2 and 1:25.1 before zipping up the passing lane to a one-half length victory in 1:55. Mystic Shadow settled for second and Wiggle Delight was six lengths behind the leaders in third. Monday’s outing was Mach My Kiss’s debut at the Grassroots level after three starts with the Gold Series
fillies. “She did nothing wrong all the way down, trained good, and then I started her in the Gold and that teased me, because she finished third in the first one and I left her there for a couple,” said Fellows, a Rockwood resident. “Now I’ve got to hope I can get some points in the last two here, just to try and salvage her year. She’s a nice little filly.” Fellows trains Mach My Kiss for his wife Yolanda Fellows and Erna Corbeil of Beaumont, AB. Jody Jamieson piloted Coco Beach De Vie to her 1:57 win in the second division for trainer Daryl Roberts and owners Walter and Ruth Ann Parkinson of Lucan and Rachel Roberts of Dorchester. The win was the Sunshine Beach daughter’s first and Jamieson said she is finally
delivering on the promise she showed when he drove her in qualifying action in June. “Daryl has been really patient with her,” said Jamieson. “She was real quick in June and needed most of July to learn to handle the speed. Tonight she raced tough and rewarded Daryl for his patience.” The other Grassroots division went to Siochan, who captured her first lifetime victory with a 1:55.2 effort for driver Paul MacKenzie and owner-trainer Deb O’Brian Moran of Carlisle. Lady Natasha finished one and three-quarter lengths back in second and Century Gianna was well back in third. Grand River Raceway will wrap up its 2019 Ontario Sires Stakes schedule on Sept. 23 with the fourth Gold Series event for the two-year-old trotting colts.
ALTON - Following a successful 30-year career as a horse trainer and another 10 years as an artist, Mark Grice recently released his first novel Paint The Horse Blue. Grice combines his interest in horses and art to create a fictional story spanning over 100 years and into 10 states and one Canadian province. “If you like horses, horse shows, horse auctions and rural small town life, you’re going to love this book,” said Grice. “But there is enough mystery, crime, history and relationship issues to entertain the non-horse person too.” Grice brings an authenticity to the equine world which is evidence of his lifetime of experience in most aspects of the industry including hunters and jumpers, quarter horses and rodeo.

South said sessions with Mighty are appropriate for all ages and for recreational riders to competitive riders. “Most riders want to be better for the horse,” she said. “They want to be the best they can be for their horse.” Mighty can help them get there in a safe and informative way.

PALMERSTON – A new business in Wellington County allows horseback riders to focus on their skills and biomechanics without having to juggle and manage a live horse. Black Horse Biomechanics Riding Simulator opened on May 20 and owner Shannon South said she’s had no lack of clientele. The simulator is named Marmite, Mighty for short, and apart from the mechanical sounds, lack of horse smell and consistent gait, he moves and feels very much like a real horse (not at all like a mechanical bull or children’s horses at the grocery store). “He doesn’t spook, he doesn’t bolt ... he just does steady things all the time,” South explained. He even uses a working saddle and South offers an English all-purpose dressage saddle, a western dressage saddle and a children’s saddle. However, Mighty is for any level of rider, not just those who practice dressage. During sessions Mighty reads and analyzes a rider’s biomechanics – how they’re sitting in the saddle, how they’re holding the reins and even how their legs lay on the horse’s body. “As human beings we often don’t know what we’re actually doing in our own bodies,” said South, who is also a riding instructor. “So a rider will come to me and ... say ‘my balance is really terrible,’ well we can actually

see what their balance is.” She said for most of the time a rider is in the saddle, they’re paying attention to what the horse is doing and where they’re going. “So this really allows us to just concentrate on ... ourselves without any distraction from anything else,” South said. “And to be able to ride certain gaits ... for as long as we want because he never gets tired and the gait is always the same.” Mighty can move a rider through life-like gaits
including two speeds of walk, two speeds of trot and left and right lead canter, along with a host of advanced dressage movements. With four sensors under his saddle, the simulator can measure where the rider is sitting in the saddle and South can make adjustments to help the rider achieve a more balanced seat. “We want to move with the motion of the horse because if we were just frozen and we didn’t move anywhere [the horse] would be like
‘what’s going on,’” she said. “So our seat needs to move with the motion on the horse but what we’re looking for is a balance.” South said horses can feel if the rider is off-centre and while some horses don’t care, other horses are very sensitive. “They get very upset
sitting in the wrong place they can actually develop muscles incorrectly ... we have to be as athletic as they are,” South explained. As an instructor, South said Mighty makes it easy to explain and show riders how they need to adjust what they’re doing. “I never run around chasing my horses in the arena,” South said. “So as Mighty canters along I can be standing here and helping a rider using the mirrors and find certain places in your body and it’s just invaluable.”
In addition to giving immediate feedback, at the end of a session the rider will get a print out of their analytics that they can take back to their coach or use for their own reference to help them when they ride a live horse. South said Mighty is also a great resource for riders who are overcoming confidence issues, whether it’s due to an accident, years out of the saddle, hip or knee replacements, concussions or a whole host of other life CONTINUED ON > 30
