Welcome

to the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

SCOTLAND … WITHOUT THE AIRFARE. The Fergus Scottish Festival Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers all welcome you to the 68th Festival & Highland Games! Over the years, the Fergus Scottish Festival has grown from a one-day event to a three day celebration of all things Scottish. Pipe Bands, Highland Dance, Heavy Events, Clans, Celtic music and Scottish wares are all part of this heritage-packed experience. This year we are pleased to host a number of championships including the Canadian Scottish Athletic Federations Mens Championship and the Canadian Tug of War Championships in addition to the Pipeband and Dance Competitions. I would like to wish a warm welcome to featured author, Diana Gabaldon as well. The Festival is pleased you are joining us again this year. As you move throughout the Festival you will notice many changes. We hope you will enjoy these changes as they should allow you to take in more of our wonderful event. Finally, I would like to thank the Board of Directors who have brought the Festival to where it is today. Your tenacity has been appreciated by myself, the Event Management and certainly the patrons as you have worked diligently to produce the 2013 Fergus Scottish Festival.

The band participates in many parades and highland games around the community and all over southern Ontario. Souvenir Tattoo Candles On sale $3 each or 2 for $5, join in this magical tribute. Fireworks Finale Courtesy of Fergus’ own internationally acclaimed and celebrated David Whysall International Fireworks. Guinness World Record Attempt Most cabers flipped simultaneously.

The Tattoo Turn off the taps.

What is a Tattoo? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth century Holland. In these days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum would “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “time, gentlemen please”. In English, “taptoe” became “tattoo” and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and in an early exercise in public relations; the band performed concerts for the local population. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dances, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Sunday, August 11th, 10 am St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church 325 St. George St. W., Fergus The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan tradition is an old one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well. They clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin’ was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan, and at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans. Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect to their old traditions.

Heritage Tent Sponsored by Nexans Sheep Shearing The centuries old tradition of sheep shearing is brought to life again this year by Tom Redpath, a professional shearer with over 30 years of experience. His goal is to educate the audience about this traditional craft and demonstrate the intricacies of shearing a sheep that weighs as much as a small man. Spinning & Weaving Members of the Guelph Guild of Handweavers & Spinners will demonstrate various techniques to educate our visitors about the steps taken to create beauty from the wool of the sheep. Observe the process of spinning the washed, cleaned, and sometimes dyed wool that will then be knit, crocheted, or woven into various articles to keep us warm in the cooler months. Hand Quilting Virginia Ingleby, owner of our local quilt shop Undercover Quilts and More, will be joined by members of The Grand Quilt Guild of Fergus for a demonstration of hand stitching skills related to quilting. Celtic Needlework Ellen Mervin and her team from Ruach Crafts will demonstrate Celtic needlework designs and techniques all weekend. Celtic needlepoint and cross stitch designs will delight all who visit. You can even try your hand at a small take home project as they teach you the simplicity of the techniques. Highland Cattle These majestic animals are something special to see. Come learn about their history and how the breed is being preserved right here in our own part of Ontario. Their owners will answer questions and tell you all there is to know. Fly Tying Techniques The Casual Dressers Club from Guelph and area will delight you with the intricate and delicate art of fly tying. Observe the interesting materials they use and how finely crafted each individual tie is as it is created step by step. You might even get a chance to make one yourself if you come early. Rope Making Try your hand at making a piece of rope like the early settlers did. Do you have the muscles and the stamina to finish it? Music From the Harp Relax as Pennie Young serenades us with the soft and gentle sounds of the harp. Learn how it works and how it is played.

What Is Highland Dancing? Carrie Hamilton, well known Highland dance instructor, will tell us all about the techniques and other details of the dances. Costumes, hand positions, swords – why are they important to each dance? Celtic Clogging Our Festival Chieftain, Angela Cameron, with the help of a few friends, will entertain and educate us with the art of the step dance. This Celtic tradition is found all over North America in various forms. Maybe your interest will be sparked and you will try this invigorating dance and fun exercise. What Are the “Heavies”? Fergus is known worldwide for the quality of our heavy events. Our speakers will educate you about their origin and their ongoing purpose. They will explain how they are judged and how the competitors prepare for these challenges. The Art of Hand Embroidery If you were a highlander or a lowlander, or the aristocracy, every Scottish woman and her descendants learned the art of hand work. Whether it was mending your workday clothes or embellishing a wedding gown, the basics of hand embroidery were well learned beside the Scottish hearth both over home and in the new settlements of North America. The Canadian Embroiderers Guild Guelph will amaze and excite you with their varied samples of exquisite work. Tommy Leadbeater & Scooter Muse Tommys captivating voice will be beautifully complimented by Scooter on one (or more) of his many instruments. Kevin James Associate Professor of History and Scottish Studies at the University of Guelph, and author of the forthcoming book ‘Tourism, Land and Landscape in Ireland: the Commodification of Culture’ (Routledge, 2014); Kevin’s current research looks at the history of the inn and hotel as social, commercial and cultural institutions. He will discuss Scottish Migration to Canada. Sea Sick Sailors Fans call them a “Canadian Celtic Folk-Rock band with a shot of east coast fun” but they’re mostly just about having fun. Playing a mix of crowd-pleasing covers and original tunes, you are sure to identify with these kilt wearers.

Scottish Country Dancing Joining us this year are members of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society with dancers from the Waterloo Wellington region. This is an exciting new addition to our program and will delight one and all as we learn how the tradition of the dance is being passed on.

Ladies of Lallybroch Fergus Scottish Festival, Diana Gabaldon & the Ladies of Lallybroch through the ages by Lynn Boland Richardson.

Featured Author: Diana Gabaldon Seventeen million copies sold in 23 countries, translated into nineteen languages, Diana Gabaldon is the brilliant and engaging author of the award-winning, NYT-bestselling Outlander novels. They have been described by Salon magazine as “the smartest historical sci-fi adventureromance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting “Scrooge McDuck” comics.” The 1991 publication of classic Outlander began a literary following that can only be described as a domino effect. Captivating readers from around the world, the adventures of Jamie Fraser and Claire are carried through seven more New York Times-bestselling novels; Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Echo in the Bone and Written in My Own Hearts Blood. Additional companion volumes The Outlandish Companion I and II provide copious details on the settings, background, characters, research and writing of the novels. Gabaldon has also written historical mysteries such as The Lord John series as well as several additional novellas featuring Lord John Grey. Currently she is working on a contemporary mystery series set in Phoenix. Diana has written highly scholarly introductions to recent modern library editions of Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. Welcome back Diana, we’re thrilled you could join us again this year.

SUNDAY AUGUST 11TH 12:30 pm Massed Bands 1:30 pm Grade 5 Competitions 5:00 pm Grade 5 Awards Final Massed Bands

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5, with Grade 1 being the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (or set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are and the more tunes required. The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes, drawn by the judges prior to entering the field. This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section, use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing his comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.

Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

Name now changed to Folk Music Ontario On behalf of Folk Music Ontario (previously known as the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals), it is my honour and privilege to welcome you to Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games and to congratulate everyone who has helped make it possible. Whether as fans or performers, many of us fell in love with folk, roots and world music at festivals such as this, and went on to devote major portions of our lives to making sure that the scene continued. Now, whether as performers, organizers, volunteers, directors, vendors, exhibitors or listeners, we come together again to be part of this celebration of music and community. Folk Music Ontario is proud to support the growth and development of folk music in Ontario. I encourage you to also check out a few of the other great festivals across the province, each with its own special character and flavour. It takes huge commitments of time, energy, and talent to pull a festival like this together. Congratulations once again to all the volunteers and organizers of Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games and to all of you for being here to enjoy it. Have a great weekend. Cheers,

Alex Sinclair President
