PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Eric Peterson Fergus Lions Club
After Helen Keller challenged our organization to become her Knights of the Blind, Lions now work to totally eliminate preventable blindness.
As the president of the Fergus Lions Club, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our 37th Annual Home & Leisure Show. The show was started to carry out the work the Lions do in our local community, province and worldwide, by using these funds to help people less fortunate than ourselves; after all, our motto is “WE SERVE.” Some of the projects the Fergus Lions run or support are: sight screening for children and our Walk for Dog Guides that raises funds for the six types of service dogs supplied to Canadians who need them, free of charge. At Christmas, along with other service clubs in town, we run the Fergus Santa Claus Parade. We hold photos with Santa, and the money collected is donated to the Centre Wellington Food Bank. We also hold a toy drive with Reliable Ford and all the toys go to the Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program. We present TV Bingo every Wednesday throughout the fall and winter and use that money toward equipment and other needs for Groves Memorial Community Hospital. In the fall and spring, we organize a roadside cleanup of our section of the highway south from Canadian Tire. We ask school children from one of our elementary schools to help in return for a donation to their projects. We sponsor an effective speaking contest for local high school students, and the Lions Youth Exchange program. After Helen Keller challenged our organization to become her Knights of the Blind, Lions now work
to totally eliminate preventable blindness. We also collect used eyeglasses and get them to people who need them. Lions have also taken up the challenge to wipe out measles. We make donations to Lake Joseph Camp (CNIB); Camp Dorset for those on dialysis; and Camp Huronda, a camp for children with diabetes. The Fergus Lions Club contributes to our community in many ways, with the Grand River Arboretum and Wilkie Park. We also contributed to the improvements to the Sportsplex and continue to assist local sports teams and other youth organizations. Our Club is always looking for new members to join the largest service organization in the world, with 1.37 milion men and women volunteering from 219 countries worldwide. If you are interested in becoming a Lion and helping out in your community, speak to any of the Lions at the show or call me at 519-843-7204, and start your journey on a path of service with the Lions of the world. For more info about Lions and our Club go to www.lionsclubs.org or www.ferguslionsclub.org. I look forward to meeting and talking to you at the show, and don’t forget our Fergus Lioness Fish Fry on Friday night. It’s always a hit for good food and friends. And I would like to thank you for your ongoing support of our Home & Leisure Show! Eric Peterson Fergus Lions Club 519.843.7204

FERGUS & MARSVILLE LIONS CLuB WALK FOR DOG GUIDES 2015 walk – “ A New Leash on Life” What a great program! Giving Canadians a “new leash on life” by supplying them with specially trained dogs to help them get through their day. Over the years thousands of Canadians with disabilities have been able to obtain an assistance dog at no cost and you can help to make this dream come true for even more people. The Lions Foundation of Canada raises the puppies and trains the dogs at our facilities in Breslau and Oakville Ontario. We Lions are very proud of this aspect of our service work that has its roots in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the fledgling Lions Club to become her… “ Knights of the blind in this crusade against darkness”. The program started out with only canine vision dogs but now has expanded to include hearing ear, seizure response, service, autism assistance and diabetic alert dogs. Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides in Oakville began in 1983. The first year we trained (5) dogs and that has expanded
to over 150 dogs annually and the need is growing every year. The cost to raise and train a dog averages about $25,000 over two years and our local Fergus and Marsville goal is usually near $10,000.
There are many ways to find out about our Dog Guide program. We recently held a public open house at the Oakville Training Centre for the public to learn how you could foster a dog in training or apply for a dog for a person with disabilities. For more information go to www. dogguides.com For information about
Fergus Lions and the Walk for Dog Guides go to www. ferguslions.org or come to the Lions Home and Leisure Show and ask at the Lions booth. The people of Fergus and area have been very generous over the years and we have scheduled our annual walk and celebration again this year for the last Sunday in May. (May 30th 2015) The walk will be along the Elora Cataract Trail at Gartshore St. in Fergus and the festivities will be in the Forfar Ball-park on Gartshore. There will be free food and beverages and treats for the dogs and a short walk along the trail toward Belwood. There are already over 150 walks registered from coast to coast to coast. To find our walk go to locations and look for Ontario and then Fergus; you can join a team listed there or even form your own walking team. So contact a Lion, pick up a pledge sheet and start walking …it’s a healthy thing to do and it might just give you “a new leash on life”.

WHY ARE WE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? Don Doyle Take a moment to consider the following question: Are you concerned in the well being of your community? Are you interested in having the opportunity to network with key people within the community? Would you like to meet people, have fun, and be of help to those less fortunate? If you can answer “yes” to any one of these questions, then the Fergus Lions Club is the organization for you. On behalf of our Club I invite you to contact any member of our Club or visit our website at www.ferguslionsclub. org for a brief overview
of our activities and our accomplishments. Picture a person standing in a field holding a shovel. Neither the person nor the shovel are of any great value, until they get together and DO something. That’s how it is with Lions. It’s an opportunity for the organization and people to come together and DO something. Something worthwhile, something rewarding, something for the betterment of our community. Look for our members at the Lois Home and Leisure Show. Say “hello” top them, feel free to ask for information about our Lions organization.

PHOTOS WITH SANTA
We Invite You To Visit Our Booth
The Fergus Lions Club is proud to support the Centre Wellington Food Bank in various ways throughout the year, either by direct donation or with community participation at our Home & Leisure Show, Toy Drive at Reliable Ford, and Photos with Santa in late November and early December. Held as an annual fundraiser for over a decade, Photos with Santa raised $410 in 2014 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex, thanks to the support of families and sports teams. Santa also visited the Elora and District Skating Club, resulting in an additional $25 donation for the food bank from that organization. The price has remained unchanged at $5 per photo and participants over the years have included very young
