Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

C’ead mile failte! (a hundred thousand welcomes) On behalf of the Board of Directors, Chairpersons, Volunteers and Staff of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, I welcome you to this our 69th annual celebration of all things Scottish, bringing to you “Scotland … without the airfare”. We are all very proud of the Festival we are able to offer; an event that has steadily grown into an activity and fun-filled three days featuring our four pillars; the heavy events, highland dancing, pipes and drums and the gathering of the clans, as well as the heritage presentations, celebration of Scottish music and the many concessions selling things Scottish and things not so Scottish, but sure to interest you as you browse the grounds. We are very proud to welcome David Webster O.B.E. as our Honourary Chieftain this year. David has been the voice of the heavy events at the Festival for many years and we want to thank him for his support and dedication. On this the 100th anniversary of the First World War, our Friday night Tattoo this year features a tribute to all those who gave of themselves for us. We will also make a second attempt at a world record for the greatest number of cabers tossed simultaneously. Along with our traditional firework display and the lighting of the hearth by the clans it should be a night not to be missed! Please make the most of the weekend and do not hesitate to ask any of our many dedicated volunteers for any assistance you may need.

Bain taineamh as an deireadh seachtaine. (Enjoy your weekend) David Radley President 69th Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

Friday Night Tattoo Sponsored by David Whysall International Fireworks FRIDAY, August 8th 7:00 pm - Pre Tattoo | 8:00 pm - The Tattoo: Denis Snowdon MC The Tattoo is a remarkable spectacle of Pipe Bands, Brass and Marching ensembles and Scottish themed performances. It simply is the finest way to kick off our Festival weekend. Don’t miss the rallying of the Clans and a moving tribute to the Homeland with a grand finale of dazzling fireworks by our own David Whysall International Fireworks Inc. of Fergus. The audience is encouraged to pay tribute to the Scottish homeland with a candle during the “Lightin” ceremony ($3 each or 2/$5). This year’s Tattoo will include the return of Fergus’s own Guinness Book of World Records attempt for the most cabers turned simultaneously. Be awed by the amazing strength of 60 athletes, some Heavy Event competitors, some “Regular Joes”, as they attempt to set a world record. The stunning spectacle is returning to the Tattoo after narrowly missing setting the record in 2013. Come cheer on our ‘tossers’ in this breath taking undertaking. Along with many regional Pipe and Drum Corps., enjoy special tributes made throughout the evening marking the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War I. Scottish dancers, musicians and amazing artists will pay tribute to the many men and women that gave so much for our country. A musical and historical representation honouring the Great War will be presented by Historian and Author, Hugh Brewster and the Grammy nominated Elora Festival Singers. Fergus is delighted to host our talented neighbours from Elora to assist in this multimedia presentation of Canada’s participation in WW1. Along with performances by the incomparable Tommy Leadbeater, Janice Howie and Nick Gush, enjoy the Fergus Pipe Band celebrating over 85 years of service. Returning to Fergus are the graceful and talented students of the Sandra Bald Jones Studio of Hamilton, Ontario. These exquisite young dancers will present a stunning and moving tribute to our Troops. The entire Tattoo is presented under the masterful touch of Denis Snowdon. Fergus is proud to have had Denis present the Friday evening event for almost 3 decades. As the producer and host of ‘A Little Breath of Scotland’ on AM740, Denis will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show in October of this year. The longevity of Denis’ show is an achievement that very few in the industry can match. ‘A Little Breath of Scotland’ is certainly the longest running Scottish show in North America – perhaps the world. As Denis Snowdon’s nostalgic brogue whisks you back to the homeland; the effects of a starlit night, smoke, candlelight amidst the castle walls, as well as the cry of the bagpipes is sure to create magic. Join us for this traditional Tattoo - truly an evening to remember.

Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

The Tattoo Turn off the taps.

What is a Tattoo? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth century Holland. In these days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum would “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “time, gentlemen please”. In English, “taptoe” became “tattoo” and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and in an early exercise in public relations; the band performed concerts for the local population. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dances, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Sunday, August 10th, 10 am St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church 325 St. George St. W., Fergus The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan tradition is an old one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well. They clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin’ was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan, and at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans. Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect to their old traditions.

Heritage Tent Sponsored by Nexans Sheep Shearing The centuries old tradition of sheep shearing is brought to life again this year by Tom Redpath, a professional shearer with over 30 years of experience. His goal is to educate the audience about this traditional craft and demonstrate the intricacies of shearing a sheep that weighs as much as a small man. Spinning & Weaving The members of the Guelph Guild of Handweavers & Spinners will demonstrate various techniques to educate our visitors about the steps taken to create beauty from the wool of the sheep. Observe the process of spinning the washed, cleaned, and sometimes dyed wool that will then be knit, crocheted, or woven into various articles to keep us warm in the cooler months. Hand Quilting Virginia Ingleby, owner of our local quilt shop Under Cover Quilts and More, will be joined by members of The Grand Quilt Guild of Fergus for a demonstration of hand stitching skills related to quilting. Highland Cattle These majestic animals are something special to see. Come and learn about their history and how the breed is being preserved right here in our own part of Ontario. Their owners will answer questions and tell you all there is to know. Rope Making Try your hand at making a piece of rope like the early settlers did. Do you have the muscles and the stamina to finish it? Scottish Foods and Their Stories Alison Jackson will entertain us with stories from home about traditional Scottish foods. Growing up in Scotland with a family of great cooks gifted her with lots of tales to tell. She might even show us some of her treasured heritage cook books brought from Scotland. Celtic Clogging Angela Cameron, with the help of a few friends, will entertain and educate us with the art of the step dance. This Celtic tradition is found all over North America in various forms. Maybe your interest will be sparked and you will try your hand at this invigorating dance and you will turn it into fun exercise.

Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

The Immigrants’ Kist Join us in 1830 Scotland as we prepare to travel to the New World. How will we afford the passage? What perils will we face? What shall we bring to begin our new life? How will we say goodbye to our Kith and Kin? Will we ever see our beloved Scotland again? Re-enactors, Tracy Gordon and Steve Ferguson, in full highland costume, bring this story to life on stage. The Story Teller Stories about the thistle, the spider, and the wild haggis will entertain you, as re-enactor Douglas Robinson, in full highland costume, takes to the stage or the tree shaded corners to tell his fanciful tales. The Art of Shoeing a Horse Paul, a local farrier, will demonstrate the technique of giving his horse a firm footing with properly fitted horseshoes. Be sure to meet Earl, the four footed star of the show. The Pipes – Everything You Need to Know Join one of our local pipers from the Fergus Pipe Band as the ins and out of a set of bagpipes are explained. Learn about the parts, the music, the tones, and the tunes used by the pipers of the games. Clay & Scotch – Do They Mix? Using a favourite Scotch (single malt preferred) bottle or box, Peggy Davidson from P.D Pottery will demonstrate how to build a vessel from clay. Peggy will show that you don’t always need a potter’s wheel to create unique, beautiful and functional pieces. Come watch as she creates utensil holders, mugs, milk pitchers and wine cups. Marquetry Marquetry is the art of applying pieces of veneer (which are paper thin piece of wood) to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The technique may be applied to decorative objects or are artworks in their own right. Tinsmithing Tinsmithing is a process of using blunt tools to decorate or manipulate and shape thin pieces of tin. A white smith fabricates items such as cups, pitchers, forks, spoons and candle holders. Now it is used mostly for decorations.

Massed Bands Grade 5 Competitions Grade 5 Awards Final Massed Bands

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5, with Grade 1 being the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (or set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are and the more tunes required. The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes, drawn by the judges prior to entering the field. This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section, use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing his comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.
