Fàilte Welcome
to the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games
SCOTLAND … WITHOUT THE AIRFARE. The Fergus Scottish Festival Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers all welcome you to the 67th Anniversary Festival & Highland Games! Over the years, the Fergus Scottish Festival has grown from a one-day event to a three day celebration of all things Scottish. Pipe Bands, Highland dance, Heavy Events, Clans, Celtic music, and Scottish wares are all part of this heritage-packed experience. We invite you to sample Scottish culture through a Festival hosted by an inspired community that has caught the attention of people worldwide. The 2012 Tattoo will feature Maryland’s own American Originals and will close with a spectacular display of fireworks by David Whysall. Friday will also feature the “Barracks Johnny”—a one-time specialty dance to commemorate the War of 1812. This year’s Festival promises to be an unforgettable year as the Festival plays host to the first ever Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation (CSAF) Women’s Championship in Heavy Events starting on Friday, and the International Highland Games Federation (IHGF) Professional Men’s World Championships on Saturday. With these remarkable special events, as well as returning favorites such as the full Scottish Dance Competition, the Pipe and Drum Competitions, and the Canadian Tug of War Competitions; I wish you a welcome and exceptional experience as we celebrate Scotland…without the airfare.

48th Highlanders Through pipes and drums the 48th Highlanders capture the essence of their military heritage. Founded in 1891, the band has traveled Canada, the United States, Bermuda, and Europe, bringing its rich sound to military performances and concerts including every home opener for the Toronto Maple Leafs since 1931.
Tommy Leadbeater Out of the musically rich Nova Scotian island of Cape Breton comes tenor, Tommy Leadbeater. His captivating voice, with its crystal clear tones, rich in harmonics and secure in its upper range has earned him a reputation of being one of Nova Scotia’s finest vocalists, and a Fergus Scottish Festival favourite.
Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth century Holland. In these days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night.
American Originals Fife & Drum Corps The all-volunteer members of the Corps are inspired by pride to execute a difficult musical and marching program. Corps members range in age from teens to seniors, and practice many vocations, but all feel the true family spirit that permeates this unique organization. From its home in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, the Corps marches out to present American music to audiences worldwide, always aspiring to be complete entertainers; leaving fans standing, clapping, and calling for more.
Fergus Pipe Band Founded in 1927, the Fergus Pipe Band has over 30 members and students playing in one performance band and two competition bands. The band participates in many parades and highland games around the community and all over southern Ontario. We’re pleased to celebrate their 85th Anniversary this year.
The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum would “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “time, gentlemen please”.
Preston Scout House Band Today’s Alumni Band is an award-winning crowd favourite in parades, concerts and field show presentations across Southern Ontario, Quebec and through the north-eastern and midwestern American states. The original Preston Scout House Band earned an enviable and deserved reputation for excellence. It was referred to as Canada’s Famous Scout House Bugle Band.
In English, “taptoe” became “tattoo” and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and in an early exercise in public relations; the band performed concerts for the local population.
Denis Snowdon Well known radio personality on AM 740’s “A Little Breath of Scotland”. Denis adds a little Taste of Scotland to our Tattoo each year. Tribute to the Homeland & Rallying of the Clans Pick up a souvenir Tattoo Candle and join the Clans as they pay tribute to the Homeland.
What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dances, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Clan Cameron Ontario Branch Anniversary The Clan Cameron Association world-wide was officially founded in 1889, and the North American Association created in 1976 with the formation of the Grandfather Mountain Branch. The second branch and first in Canada was in Ontario in 1977, celebrating their 35th anniversary in 2012. Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of our Scottish heritage, and fully supported by our Hereditary Chief, Donald Cameron of Lochiel, thousands of individuals and families worldwide are proud members.
The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan tradition is an old one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well. They clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin’ was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan, and at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans. Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect to their old traditions.
The present motto of the Clan Cameron is “Aonaibh Ri Chéile,” which roughly translated means “Unite” or “Let Us Unite. Thank you for celebrating our 35th anniversary with us.

SUNDAY August 12th 12:30pm Massed Bands 1:30pm Grade 5 Competitions 5:00pm Grade 5 Awards Final Massed Bands
The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5, with Grade 1 being the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers. The Festival runs competitions for individual pipers and drummers, as well as whole pipe bands. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (or set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are, and the more tunes required. For example, a Grade 5 band would only have to submit one medley of marches, where as a band in Grade 2 may have to perform a medley of tunes of different styles and time signatures, around 6-8 tunes. The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes, drawn by the judges prior to entering the field. This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players, and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section, use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen, and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing his comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.
