Fàilte Welcome to Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games SCOTLAND … WITHOUT THE AIRFARE. The Board of Directors, staff, sponsors and volunteers of the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games are delighted to welcome you to our 3-day celebration of all things Scottish.

Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games Our Mission: To present, promote and preserve Scottish Culture within the framework of a Canadian multi-cultural society. Founded in 1946 by Alex Robertson, the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games were created as a community wide celebration of Scottish life and customs. Since then the Festival has grown to proudly earn the title of the oldest and largest 3-day Scottish Festival in North America attracting over 28,000 visitors and is listed as one of the top 100 festivals in Ontario.

This year, the weekend kicks off on Thursday, August 6th in downtown Historic Fergus with Celtic music featured in local pubs and restaurants. On Friday evening the Tattoo will again be highlighted by a fly over by the Tiger Boys of Guelph and will culminate with a fireworks display presented by David Whysall International Fireworks. Close the evening out in Sleeman’s Highland Pub with a performance by the Mudmen. Return early on Saturday morning to enjoy the numerous events throughout the grounds. Heavy events, Highland dancing, Piping, Avenue of the Clans, Genealogy, Heritage and Tea Tents are all yours to discover at your leisure. Opening the Games this year is Diana Gabaldon, fresh from her trip to The Gathering in Scotland. We are delighted that she is once again returning to the Festival. The massed bands on the main field during the Opening Ceremonies are always a crowd favourite. Spend your Saturday night with us as we feature music from Rant Maggie Rant, Fiddlestix and Poor Angus. On Sunday we’re proud to present two new events. The Avenue of the Artisan’s will take over much of the Clan area and will feature one-of-a-kind art projects from local artisans. On Sunday afternoon join us as we close out the weekend with a stirring concert featuring Canadian favourites Leahy. We hope that you enjoy all the sites and sounds of the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games over the next three days and that we live up to our goal of giving all visitors a wee taste of Scotland... without the airfare.

Friday Night Tattoo Sponsored by Guelph Mercury FRIDAY August 7th 7:00pm - Twilight Concert - Oakville Fiddle Club 8:00pm - The Tattoo - Denis Snowdon MC Oakville Fiddle Club: This twenty-five piece community orchestra will entertain you with their lively jigs, marches and strathspeys, fiery reels, and heartwarming waltzes and airs. Their uplifting sound will leave you whistling tunes long after the show has ended.

The Tattoo Turn off the taps. The Military Tattoo originated in 17th century Holland when British drummers were sent out to round up soldiers from local taverns. To get them out, Innkeepers would order doe den tap toe or turn off the taps.

What is a Tattoo? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth-century Holland. In those days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum, would order "doe den tap toe" or "turn off the taps", the local last call equivalent of "time, gentlemen, please". In English, "taptoe" became "tattoo" and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and, in an early exercise in public relations, the band performed concerts for the local population.

Highland Creek Pipe Band: The Highland Creek Pipes and Drums formed in 1954 at the Dowty Iron Works in Ajax Ontario. Known as the Ajax Pipe Band, the band wore the”MacDonald, Lord of the Isles” tartan, which is still worn today. Two years later they became affiliated with The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 in Highland Creek and became known as “The Highland Creek Pipes and Drums”. This affiliation lasted until 1979, when the band became an independent non-profit organization. In 2007, the band traveled to France to participate in the 90th Anniversary Ceremony of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and was part of the rededication ceremony of the Vimy Ridge Memorial there. Preston Scout House Alumni Band – Cambridge ON: Over its near 30 year history (1938-67), the original Preston Scout House Band established an enviable reputation for showmanship, precision and excellence. Today’s Alumni Band strives to live up to those traditions. Fergus Pipe Band: Founded in 1927, the Fergus Pipe Band has over 30 members and students playing in one performance band and two competition bands. The band participates in many parades and highland games around the community and all over southern Ontario. Grand Celtic Pipe Band: The Grand Celtic Pipe Band made its debut performance in 2000. Led by Pipe Major Calum MacDonald, the band consists of over forty dedicated players. Most are from various communities along the Grand River, after which the band is named. The band's home base is in Fergus, Ontario.

What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dancers, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Kirkin’ O’ The Tartan Sunday, August 9th 2009 - 10am St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church 325 St. George St. W, Fergus The Kirkin' O' the Tartan tradition is an old Highland one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However, as the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well, they clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin' was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan and, at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans and the Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect for their old traditions. Join the Clans, Stuart Cameron and Tom Leadbeater for The Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games version of the Kirkin’. The service will be led by David Whitecross who’s sermon is entitled John Knox, Scotland. Please stay after the service and enjoy a strupak in the church hall.

Featured Author Diana Gabaldon is the author of the award-winning, New York Times bestselling Outlander novels, described by Salon magazine as "the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting "Scrooge McDuck" comics.” The adventure began in 1991 with the classic Outlander ("historical fiction with a Moebius twist"), continued through five more NYT bestselling novels--Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, and A Breath of Snow and Ashes--and a nonfiction (well, relatively) companion volume, The Outlandish Companion, which provides copious details on the settings, background, characters, research, and writing of the novels. Gabaldon has also written two historical mysteries, Lord John and the Private Matter, and Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, as well as several novellas featuring Lord John Grey (which will appear in volume form this November, as Lord John and the Hand of Devils). In addition, she is working on a contemporary mystery series, set in Phoenix, and has written Highly Scholarly Introductions (with masses of footnotes) to recent Modern Library editions of Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, and Thomas Paine's Common Sense. A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the most recent novel in the main Outlander series, opened simultaneously at #1 on the bestseller lists of four countries, and won both a Quill Award and the Corine International literary prize for fiction.

Scottish Heavy Events School Competition

SATURDAY August 8th 8:30am Professional Men’s Events

SUNDAY August 9th 8:30am Master’s Amateur’s Women’s Events

Competition Commentator: David P. Webster O.B.E From Irvine, Scotland, David P. Webster O.B.E. has a passion and great knowledge of the world’s highest standards of strength and physical culture sports. His skills surpass all others and have placed him in great demand worldwide. He is also an accomplished author, his most recent book is A World’s Illustrated History of Highland Games. Fresh this year from The Gathering in Edinburgh, Scotland, the athletic competitions are always greatly enriched by Webster’s colourful commentary.

Scottish Heavy Event Descriptions: The Robertson Caber: Competitor must pick a caber, run and toss it so it lands straight out from him/her at a 12 o’clock position. The Caber is tossed for accuracy not for distance.

The Hammers: They are tossed similar to the Olympic style where severe rotation imparts momentum to the hammer, then it is released for distance. Most athletes wear boots with bayonets to maintain ground contact.

The Sheaf: 16 or 20lb weighted ball of twine and burlap and a standard pitch fork to toss. The sheaf must pass over the horizontal bar, competitors get 3 attempts. The highest toss wins.

The Stone: Similar to a shot put except is uses a field stone. It is put from behind a trig which is a market log on the ground. It may be put either Braemar (standing) or standard shot-put fashion.

Weight for Distance: The weight is hurled from behind a trig with the athlete spinning to gain momentum before releasing.

Weight for Height: The weight is tossed up and over a horizontal bar using one hand.

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5, with Grade 1 including the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers.

Starting with a September 26th kick-off bonspiel and continuing throughout the 2009/2010 season, Fergus Curling Club will be celebrating 175 continuous years of curling! www.ferguscurling.ca *All events, times and locations are subject to change

The Festival runs competitions for individual pipers and drummers, as well as whole pipe bands. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands who choose to compete must meet certain requirements. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (a set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are. Also, the difficulty level of playing is raised for higher grades. For example, a Grade 5 band would only have to submit one medley of marches (around 3 tunes). A band in Grade 2 may have to perform a medley of tunes of different styles and time signatures (around 6-8 tunes). The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-5 minutes to 7-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes (which judges draw at the starting line to determine which they will perform). This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players, and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section (corps), use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen, and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.
