Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games

President’s Message I speak on behalf of the Board of Directors, Committee Chairpersons, Members and Volunteers of the Festival in welcoming you to Fergus for our 70th annual Festival and Highland Games. Our passion and focus is to live up to our slogan and treat you to a little of “Scotland … without the airfare.” We have an exciting line-up this year, with a great deal of what has made our Festival successful for many, many years and also some new features which will pique the interest of all ages. We have an incredible musical programme this year. The festivities start on Thursday night with the Pipes, Plaid and Pageantry Parade downtown, with all of the bars and pubs featuring Celtic music. Then on to a myriad of musical talents on the Festival grounds throughout the weekend. We have designated Sunday as Family Day, focusing on making things enjoyable, comfortable and affordable to families with younger children. Don’t forget to visit historic downtown Fergus, a town still very proud of its strong Scottish roots. We are very proud to have Tommy Leadbeater as our Honorary Chieftain this year. Tommy, a favorite with many regular Festival goers, has been delighting audiences here at the Festival for 16 years and will be a great Ambassador for the Festival this year. Please make the most of your weekend and do not hesitate to ask any of our Volunteers for any assistance you may need.

C’ead mile failte!

The Flower of Scotland To be sung by all during the Welcoming Ceremonies

O flower of Scotland When will we see Your like again That fought and died for Your wee bit hill and glen That stood against him Proud Edward’s army And sent him homeward To think again The hills are bare now And autumn leaves lie thick and still O’er land that is lost now Which those so dearly held That stood against him Proud Edward’s army And sent him homeward To think again Those days are passed now And in the past they must remain But we can still rise now And be the nation again That stood against him Proud Edward’s army And sent him homeward To think again

Always a highlight of the downtown festivities during the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, the Saturday evening concert promises to be an intimate event that spotlights the musical heritage of the talented cast. The songs may have travelled from Scotland to Alabama, Cape Breton and Ontario, but the journey has only enriched them. Chieftain Tommy Leadbeater welcomes Scooter Muse, David Leask, Jil Chambless, Gillebrìde MacMillan and The Steel City Rovers to join him in an impromptu acoustic ceilidh celebrating the musical heritage of Scotland through the years and over the miles. The Saturday night concert really is all about the music. The great acoustics and sightlines of the theatre, far away from the carnival atmosphere of the Festival, allow the musicians to sparkle and shine as they react with the other artists on stage, connect with the songs and their history, and most of all, entertain the audience. Join us for a wonderful evening of song and celebration in the plush seats and air-conditioned comfort of the glorious Fergus Grand Theatre on Saturday August 8th at 8 pm. Be part of the rollicking respite at the Fergus Grand Theatre with Tommy and Friends. Tickets are available at the Theatre box office, or visit www.fergusgrandtheatre.ca Admission is $28, including handling and HST. Tickets are only $15 for Festival attendees with wristband.

This year we bring you a whole new experience to compliment the tradition, a Friday night concert! The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are here from Scotland to rock your kilts off with their groundbreaking fusion of traditional Scottish music and Rock/ Pop Anthems which they proudly call ‘Bagrock’. The concert is included in your Friday night ticket! The Tattoo is a remarkable spectacle of Pipe Bands, Brass and Marching ensembles and Scottish themed performances. It simply is the finest way to kick off our Festival weekend. Don’t miss the rallying of the Clans and a moving tribute to the Homeland with a grand finale of dazzling fireworks by our own David Whysall International Fireworks Inc. of Fergus. The audience is encouraged to pay tribute to the Scottish homeland with a candle during the “Lightin” ceremony ($3 each or 2/$5). “Salute to the 50th Anniversary of Canada’s Flag”

The Schiehallion Dance ensemble was established in Hamilton in 1968, by former World Champion Highland Dancer, Sandra Bald Jones, who continues as their director along with Dana Gamache and Laura Banfield, who are also choreographers. Over the years dancers have come and gone, but the enthusiasm and high standards maintained by this group have resulted in delighting audiences in many parts of Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Asia and Europe.

The Tattoo WHAT IS A TATTOO? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth century Holland. In these days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum would “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “time, gentlemen please”. In English, “taptoe” became “tattoo” and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and in an early exercise in public relations; the band performed concerts for the local population. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dances, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 9TH, 10 AM St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church 325 St. George St. W., Fergus The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan tradition is an old one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well. They clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin’ was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan, and at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans. Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect to their old traditions.

Pick up a festival passport! Kids (and Big Kids), take a Festival Passport and collect stamps and autographs! You can pick up a festival passport at the Clan information tent or McKiddies Centre or the information booth. Look for the PASSPORT POINT signs for the opportunity to add a stamp to your passport. Don’t forget the Clans - they have great stamps too! Once you have collected ten (10) stamps you can take your passport to the Information Booth and receive a voucher for a free treat from one of our vendors!

Sheep Shearing The centuries old tradition of sheep shearing is brought to life again this year by Tom Redpath, a professional shearer with over 30 years of experience. His goal is to educate the audience about this traditional craft and demonstrate the intricacies of shearing a sheep that weighs as much as a small man. Spinning & Weaving The members of the Guelph Guild of Handweavers & Spinners will demonstrate various techniques to educate our visitors about the steps taken to create beauty from the wool of the sheep. Observe the process of spinning the washed, cleaned, and sometimes dyed wool that will then be knit, crocheted, or woven into various articles to keep us warm in the cooler months. See the wool go from the sheep to a finished shawl over the weekend. Hand Quilting Virginia Ingleby, owner of our local quilt shop Under Cover Quilts and More, will be joined by members of The Grand Quilt Guild of Fergus for a demonstration of hand stitching skills related to quilting. Rope Making Try your hand at making a piece of rope like the early settlers did. Do you have the muscles and the stamina to finish it? The Story Teller Stories about the thistle, the spider, and the wild haggis will entertain you, as re-enactor Douglas Robinson, in full highland costume, takes to the stage or the tree shaded corners to tell his fanciful tales. The Art of Shoeing a Horse Paul, a local farrier, will demonstrate the technique of giving his horse a firm footing with properly fitted horseshoes. Be sure to meet Earl, the four footed star of the show.

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its solo and band competition in conjunction with the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Music requirements are designed to suit the bands level of ability. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players that have passed an exam certifying them in the association in which they judge. In most associations, the pipe band competition circle will have two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another judge for overall. Pipe and drum sections are judged on technical ability, unison within the section, use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect

within the entire band, how well the two corps played together, the tune selections chosen and overall band sound. The judges individually rank each band and all marks are tabulated as per the rules of the association creating the over-all winners. The various bands stake out a position within the grounds to practice, prior to competing. They love to have an audience, so don’t be shy – go watch and encourage them as they prepare to compete. The pipes and drums competition awards are presented at 5:30 pm on Saturday on the main field. Make sure you do not miss the finale play off in the Highland Pub once all results have concluded. You will hear some of the best entertainment of the weekend all in an entertaining environment. We are extremely fortunate to have three
