Welcome to the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games SCOTLAND … WITHOUT THE AIRFARE. On behalf of our dedicated volunteers, the Board of Directors and Festival staff, welcome to the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games! Over the past 66 years, the Fergus Scottish Festival has grown from a one day event to a three day celebration of all things Scottish. From Celtic music and Scottish wares, to Highland dance and heavy events, this community event features a broad sample of Scottish culture that has caught the attention of the world around. This year is no exception. In fact, the 2011 Tattoo may be one of the most memorable, with both the acclaimed John McDermott and the 48th Highlanders performing. We are also honoured to host the Canadian Tug of War Championships, which will take place on the Main Field on Saturday. The Festival is very excited to welcome featured Author Diana Gabaldon as she celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Outlander series. Please take a moment to visit the Genealogy and Education Centre to experience the creative knowledge of this world-renown Author. With this, and the many other exciting venues offered, I wish you a welcome and memorable experience as we celebrate Scotland… without the airfare.

The Tattoo Turn off the taps.
What is a Tattoo? Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in seventeenth-century Holland. In those days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march through the streets beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time to leave the taverns and return to their billets for the night. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum, would order “doe den tap toe” or “turn off the taps”, the local last call equivalent of “time, gentlemen, please”. In English, “taptoe” became “tattoo” and over the years the drummer was accompanied by a fife or bugle player and, perhaps a piper. Such groups were the beginnings of the regimental band and, in an early exercise in public relations, the band performed concerts for the local population. What started as a practical daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, a show featuring the lively rhythm of marching bands, elegant dancers, stirring cadence of the pipes and drums and breathtaking military displays.

Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Sunday, August 14th 2011 - 10am St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church - 325 St. George St. W., Fergus The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan tradition is an old highland one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well. They clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground. The Kirkin’ was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of their tartan, and at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans. Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect for their old traditions.

Continuing the Scottish tradition of Highland Dance, the Fergus Festival Championships, Highland competitions and National Dance competitions will be presented. The Fergus Scottish Festival Championship is offered to Premier dancers only with classes based on age. The four Highland dances are danced and the competitors are judged by three adjudicators. The marks are combined to determine the winner in each dance and the overall Champion. The Highland competitions are offered to both Premier and Pre-Premier dancers (Primary/Beginner/Novice/Intermediate). Each section is also divided based on age. One adjudicator judges the four Highland dances. The National Dance competitions are offered to both Premier and Pre-Premier dancers (Beginner/Novice/Intermediate). Fergus Scottish Festival Championship Championships are special competitions for Premier dancers and are sanctioned by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing. The Fergus Scottish Festival Championship was created in 2006 in celebration of the Festival’s 60th Anniversary. Separate Championships are awarded by age group up to a maximum of six. Dancers perform The Highland Fling, The Sword Dance, The Seann Triubhas and The Strathspey & Reel. Overall trophies are awarded to three places with cash award to Champion, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up. Falconry No one is sure when or where falconry began. Many say it began some 4,000 years ago in Asia Minor. Some say even earlier in the Far East. Falconry is the most highly regulated of all hunting sports today. Today, the ancient art of Falconry is still being practiced and used for bird control in such places as airports, orchards, landfill sites and is a safe efficient and economical alternative to poisons and chemicals. Ian Bruce One of the most popular performers on the British Folk scene Ian Bruce of Leith, Scotland, is famous for his original songs and stylistic renderings which include the poems and songs of Robbie Burns. Ian Bruce’s 2010 album titled Rhythm and Burns is a memorable delivery with the power and resonance Stan Rogers, the catchy draw of the Beach Boys and the story telling legacies of Harry Chapin. Yet Bruce has a style all his own.
The Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games in co-operation with the Canadian Tug of War Association is proud to present the 2011 Canadian Tug of War Championships.

Scottish Heavy Event Descriptions: The Robertson Caber:
Competitor must pick a caber, run and toss it so it lands straight out from him/her at a 12 o’clock position. The Caber is tossed for accuracy not for distance.
The Hammers:
They are tossed similar to the Olympic style where rotation imparts momentum to the hammer, then it is released for distance. Most athletes wear boots with bayonets to maintain ground contact.
The Sheaf:
16 or 20lb weighted ball of twine and burlap and a standard pitch fork to toss. The sheaf must pass over the horizontal bar, competitors get 3 attempts. The highest toss wins.
The Stone:
Similar to a shot put except it uses a field stone. It is put from behind a trig which is a market log on the ground. It may be put either Braemar (standing) or standard shot-put fashion.
Weight for Distance:
The weight is hurled from behind a trig with the athlete spinning to gain momentum before releasing.
Weight for Height:
The weight is tossed up and over a horizontal bar using one hand. *All events, times and locations are subject to change Page 27

The Fergus Scottish Festival hosts its piping competition in conjunction with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Champion Supreme Contest”. Competitors compete at different “grade” levels which are determined by the piping association. Players and Bands are assigned Grades 1 through 5 with Grade 1 including the most seasoned and experienced pipers and drummers. The Festival runs competitions for individual pipers and drummers, as well as whole pipe bands. Band competitions are the way most people judge bagpipe music. Solo Piping competitions are the way that pipers judge themselves. Bands are judged as much by very strict, standardized criteria as they are by subjective means. Bands who choose to compete must meet certain requirements. Bands in similar grades are required to perform tunes of the same style, to allow fair judging. For instance, a band competing in Grade 5 may be required to perform a medley (or set of tunes played continuously) of marches in a certain time signature. The higher the grade, the more difficult the requirements are, and the more quantity of tunes is required. Also, the difficulty level of playing is also raised for higher grades. For example, a Grade 5 band would only have to submit one medley of marches (around 3 tunes). A band in Grade 2 may have to perform a medley of tunes of different styles and time signatures (around 6-8 tunes). The length of time allotted depends on the grade as well, ranging from 3-5 minutes to 7-10 minutes. Higher-grade bands (Grades 2 and 1) must also prepare two selections of required tunes (which judges draw at the starting line to determine which they will perform). This adds to the complexity and difficulty of tune requirements in competition. There are typically four judges that critique a competing band. These judges are seasoned professional players, and must pass an exam to be certified by the association in which they judge. In most associations, there are two piping judges, one drumming judge, and another for overall ensemble. Points are tallied and weighted as per the rules of the association, and the overall winner is awarded. Pipe sections and drum sections are judged on technical ability and technique, unison within the section (corps), use of harmonies or dynamics, score composition and tuning. The ensemble judge listens for overall effect within the entire band, how well the two corps play together, the tune selections chosen, and overall band sound. After the Closing Ceremonies are concluded and the winners are announced, each band receives a sheet from each judge, containing his comments about the performance, and any numeric points awarded.

The Mudmen The Mudmen return to Fergus! The Campbell Brothers, festival favorites, are welcomed back to Fergus after their recent collaborative success with the new Hockey night in Canada theme song, and a successful appearance with Johnny Reid before the Queen. If you haven’t heard, the new lead vocalist is an absolute must hear - think Dave Mathews meets Celtic with a haunting melodic lilt not to be undermined by thunderous Pipes.
Liam McGlashon Twelve-year-old Liam McGlashon, now making his home in Hamilton, was just six years old when he picked up the fiddle. Liam has honed his stage personality through playing on various stages, at kitchen parties, conventions and trade shows in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton.
Tommy Leadbeater Tommy Leadbeater, Festival favorite will join us again for a series of appearances, songs and laughter throughout the festival weekend. His captivating voice, with its crystal clear tones, rich in harmonics and secure in its upper range has earned him a reputation of being one of Nova Scotia’s finest vocalists. The Rogues This brilliant band features the energized sound of celtrock, folk, and classical mish mashed into a high energy soulful wail and rousing traditional music. Switching from one gear to the next and never missing a beat. Ed Miller featuring Jill Chambless and Scooter Muse The Fergus Scottish Festival is thrilled to have Ed Miller back to Fergus after far too many years. This three-member ensemble brings you a presentation of Celtic music with a bit of traditional played right from the heart. Some of US’s best Scottish entertainers will take you on a journey charted through the past, to the present, with memorable stops in history along the way.
Fergus Pipe Band For decades, the Fergus Pipe Band has enjoyed a solid reputation as a street band. The band has participated in parades both locally in Ontario and elsewhere. Founded in 1927; the band has recently celebrated their 80th anniversary and are the respected recipient of the Centre Wellington Cultural Arts Award in 2008. Janice Howie and Nick Gush The Fergus Scottish Festival welcomes this wonderfully talented Fergus based act of Janice and Nick. Janice is gleaning followers every time she graces a stage, her haunting voice and dulcet tones lends itself so well to Nick’s gentle accompaniment on the acoustic guitar. The two compliment each and every tune they perform leaving the audience begging for just one more. The Shananigans The Shananigans are here and ready to bring their own brand of high energy celtic music to the party! The four member band based in Kitchener brings decades of musical and live performance experience to the stage, ensuring a lively, entertaining show for all ages and any occasion.
