PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fergus Lions Club - Patrick Anderson Welcome to the 39th Fergus Lions Home and Leisure Show and thank you for your attendance and supporting our club programs and members since 1977. 1977.... the Apple Computer company was incorporated, there was a blizzard in Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, the Chevrolet Caprice was Motor Trend car of the year and Fergus Lions Club Inc. was incorporated, but I was not yet born! What inspired those like Bruce Parker (President of Fergus Lions in 1977) and Larry Wainwright and 25 others to come together and fundraise for a new Community Sportsplex that we enjoy today? It was Lionism and the dedication to live up to our motto “We Serve“. Where there is a need there is a Lion; and we have never faltered. This Home and Leisure Show is a major part of our fundraising and the sale of booths to exhibitors enables us to support programs within the community as well as nationally and internationally. So enjoy the show, support the exhibitors and go to our website www.ferguslionsclub.org to get connected to us and some of our supporters. This year the new, Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre will be on-site at the show (in the front parking lot) and is a hands on, interactive display of everything electrical. Come and see how much electricity you can create by “pedal power” or reduce your home consumption of energy. This display is two tractor trailers full of things all about electricity and ideal for adults and children. Stop by the Lions booths of Fergus and Marsville and pick up
a bag a pop corn for a donation or donate spare change to Lions Walk for Dog Guides. Pet the Foster Dog Puppies being lovingly raised by local families to become Dog Guides. Don’t forget to buy your Fish Fry dinner tickets for Friday night (still only $15) and available at the Show or call Lynda Waterhouse at 519-846-2717. This is a quality, full meal, prepared and served by the Fergus Curling Club this year; and an annual event enjoyed by all. Nine local Lions Clubs have joined together under the banner, “Lions for Groves”, to raise $200,000
Groves. Call Lion Margaret Murray for details (519-843-3225) and book your tickets on-line at the Fergus Grand Theatre. Fergus Lions are busy all year, but especially busy in December, as we along with the Fergus Optimist and Kinsmen clubs, take a lead role in organizing the annual Santa Parade. In partnership with Reliable Motors we organize a toy drive in support of the Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program and help collect food at local grocery stores several times throughout the year. Our proceeds from Photos with Santa in early December at the
This Home and Leisure Show is a major part of our fundraising, and the sale of booths to exhibitors enables us to support programs within the community ... in support of the Diabetes & Patient program at Groves Memorial Hospital. Earlier this year, the Fergus Lions Club donated $5,000 raised through the Fergus Lions TV bingo for the purchase of a new piece of equipment for the hospital. The Fergus Lions Club, a member of the “Lions for Groves”, has pledged $35,000 in support of the fund raising campaign. For more information, visit the groves Memorial Hospital exhibit at the Fergus Lions Home & Leisure Show. Also on Oct 14th, 2017 the Ryan Joyce Show - ILLUSIONS Delusions & other Deceptions is being presented at the Fergus Grand Theatre by the Fergus Lions and all proceeds go to the Groves Memorial Hospital Foundation. Ryan was a local boy, known to many; and is returning to donate two shows to
Sportsplex is also donated to the Food Bank, along with a financial donation from our club. Members of the club collect eye glasses from local optometrists and others and sort and pack them for re-service and distribution to those in impoverished countries. We also provide financial support to Lake Joseph Centre (CNIB), to Lions Camp Dorset (celebrating 35 years in 2017) that provides on-site dialysis for those requiring that service but also to provide a camp/cottage respite for their entire family. In Huntsville Ontario we operate Camp Huronda whose mission is “ To provide a camping experience that fosters the life-long well being of children with diabetes”. In keeping with our pledge to Helen Keller in 1925 we are “Knights
of the Blind in the Fight Against Blindness” and hold an annual fundraiser named Walk for Dog Guides. This year we are proud to welcome Pet Valu as our major sponsor of the Walk and we plan to wrap up the program with a celebration and walk on Sunday May 28th, 2017 in Forfar Ball Park Fergus. Go to the Fergus Lions website for more information or stop by Pet Valu South Tower Street in Fergus and find out how you can help. This marvelous dog program has grown over the years and dogs are given, free of charge, to Canadians with physical disabilities and disabilities associated with hearing, autism, hypoglycemic diabetes unawareness, seizures as well as sight. Diabetes is sometimes the cause of blindness and we are also supporters of the Canadian Diabetes Association (now called Diabetes Canada). In November we collect for Diabetes Tag Day and in November we joined with other local service clubs to light up a section of the Grand River Walk in all blue lights to “ Bring Diabetes to Light”. Food and good diet is important to health and our club supports the Children’s Foundation - Student Nutrition Program of Centre and North Wellington. We also provide a lead role in conducting eye screening programs in the elementary schools in Fergus-Elora as well as Rockwood and Guelph. Education and sports are important to develop our youth and we Lions support the Wellington County Learning Centre and various youth sports activities in the area.
PATRICK ANDERSON
The environment is important to our Lions and we run two “ Adopt a Highway “ road side clean-up days in conjunction with local elementary schools and support and maintain two park areas. The Wilkie Park in Fergus has new equipment and bench supplied partially by Fergus Lions and assisted by the Centre Wellington Parks and Recreation Department. On the Grand River south of Colquhoun St. we maintain the memorial trees in this Arboretum. On the Elora Cataract Trail we assist to provide donated benches. As a new resident of Fergus, a new father (soon to be three times a father), new store owner and fairly new Lion, I see the advantage of being connected to a thriving and caring community. “It takes a village to raise a child” is the expression and this Lions Home and Leisure Show is one way for our “Town” to come together and make that happen. We owe the next generation the same chances we had growing up, so come to the Show, have fun, pick up a program, support the exhibitors and to become a Fergus Lion, call me. FERGUS & MARSVILLE LIONS CLUB WALK FOR DOG GUIDES A new leash on life - Walk 2017 Stress, stress and more stress! We all have some in our lives, but imagine the stress and anxiety of dealing with your busy life if you were totally blind. Imagine the anxiety suffered by someone with a type of diabetes that causes them to go into anaphylactic shock, even when they are asleep. Imagine the daily worry of a parent of an autistic child not knowing if they may dart out in traffic or other danger. The Lions Clubs of Canada are providing help by supplying trained assistance dogs free of charge to Canadians with these and other disabilities. The program has been active in Canada since 1983 and the training centre in Oakville now raises over 230 dogs per year and include: Canine Vision Dog Guides for the blind or visually impaired Hearing Ear Dog Guides to alert the deaf to alarms and door bells Service Dogs for those with physical or medical disabilities Seizure Response Dogs for those with epilepsy Autism Assistance Dogs for a child age 3-12 on the autism spectrum Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness. What a great program! Giving Canadians a “new leash on life” by supplying them with specially trained dogs to help them get through their day. And we could not do it without
the generosity of people like the ones in Centre Wellington and Marsville who gave over $19,000 last year; enough to raise a puppy to become a fully trained Dog Guide. (the average cost is $25,000)
aspect of our service work that has its roots in 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the fledgling Lions Club to become her… “Knights of the blind in this crusade against darkness”.

The people of Fergus and area have been very generous over the years and we have scheduled our annual celebration for the last Sunday in May, (May 28th 2017 at Forfar Ball Park, Gartshore Street) beginning at noon. It will include free barbeque lunch and treats and prizes for the dogs plus demonstrations and a short walk along the trail toward Belwood.

Kristi Mercier, who has been fostering Future Dog Guide puppies since 2014, with Dixon Submitted photo Others locally help by fostering a puppy from our centre in Breslau Ontario, as the six week old pups need months of socializing and training to be comfortable in all public situations, before they are ready for specialized training in Oakville. There are at least two puppies being fostered near Fergus so watch for the Golden Labs in the green coats that say “FUTURE DOG GUIDE”. Stop and say hello and you may pet the dogs, with permission, as they are being trained and not yet a “working dog” in full harness. We Lions are very proud of this
There are many ways to find out about our Dog Guide program. The Oakville Training Centre has several public open house days and are located at 152 Wilson Street, Oakville, Ontario. To find our Fergus and Marsville Walk for Dog Guides on the website go to “find your walk” and look for “Ontario” and then “Fergus”; you can join a team listed there or even form your own walking team. This year, we are pleased to announce that PET VALU will be sponsoring the Walk for Dog Guides and locally Nina and Gregg Querin, owners of Pet Valu at 882 Tower Street South in Fergus,````` are enthusiastic supporters. So contact a Lion, pick up a pledge sheet and start walking …it’s a healthy thing to do and it might just give you “a new leash on life”. In 1979 the Fergus Lions saw an opportunity to initiate a fundraising event to help offset the cost of constructing the new Fergus Arena, now called the Centre Wellington Community Sportplex. With financial backing from the town, the Lions Club raised thousands of dollars, all of the proceeds going to help retire the debt created by building the facility. The members of the club realized that they were probably onto a good event for both the Club and for the community. The first show was called the Fergus Lions Home Show, and covered one ice surface. The event has expanded over the years and CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

the name “Leisure” was added to the title to expand the scope for exhibitors. The Show did get larger, filling half the Hall as well as the ice surface. The Fergus Show is now one of the largest of its kind in small town Ontario. When the second ice surface was built, the show eventually filed both those areas, leaving the hall free for the Friday night Fish Fry. That event is now catered by the Fergus Curling Club, featuring Georgian Bay fish with baked potatoes and all the trimmings. The public are invited to enjoy the meal, served from 5:30 until 7:00. The Show is popular with exhibitors for several reasons. First, we hold the cost down, all time spent by Club members is donated. Second, the Show runs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, leaving the weekend free for exhibitors to follow their regular routine. Finally, the Show is promoted extensively leading up to the event. We take advantage of local radio and TV with promo
ads and live interviews. In collaboration with the Wellington Advertiser we produce, print and distribute a tabloid featuring exhibitors and information about the Show. We produce 48,000 copies and distribute them over a wide area of Wellington County. The Club thus far, has considered it unfair to charge exhibitors a fee to be part of the Show, then charge visitors a fee to get in to see the exhibitors. Because of the “free admission” policy, public attendance has always been good, often filling the traffic aisles to capacity. The Show has many exhibitors that follow us year after year, showing the public that the event is important to them. New exhibitors are always welcome, they give the Show fresh and interesting new look. To see and learn more about the Fergus Lions Club and all their activities, we invite you visit our web site at “ferguslionsclub. org”. We hope to see everyone again next year.
